HUTCHINSON, Kan.— Two USD 308 schools, Wiley Elementary and Magnet School at Allen, have been featured as schools to watch for best practices in providing supports for students in Kansas. USD 308 is the only district in Kansas to have two schools featured in the statewide report.

In 2021, the U.S. Department of Education launched the Safer Schools and Campuses Best Practices Clearing House.&nbsp;As a response to the executive order, the Clearinghouse began looking for stories on&nbsp;how schools were able to innovate and persevere through the pandemic.

“Our top priority in the coming months must be to work together to continue to safely reopen all schools for in-person learning, beginning with children in grades K-8. The data, and daily experience, show our children need us to find a way to take this step,” said Miguel A. Cardona, Ed.D., Secretary of Education, in reference to the purpose of the Clearinghouse.

Tammy Mitchell, Elementary Redesign Specialist with the Kansas State Department of Education, invited Wiley Elementary and Magnet School at Allen to consider sharing stories on how they were able to personalize learning, provide student choice and engage students in project-based learning during the 2020-21 school year.

The KSDE report on these best practices throughout Kansas features Wiley and Allen in two areas: Choice Boards and Rethinking.

“Given the challenges of a global pandemic, Allen Elementary School had to rethink a lot of its methods, not just procedural, but also academic and social-emotional. Part of the identity at the STEM Magnet school is explicit teaching of design process thinking; the design loop students use start with a ‘challenge.’ This year, the school was intentional in students using this model, embedding this process in everything it does,”

The report also states, “Wiley Elementary School utilized choice boards during small-group instruction time. As the school transitioned to remote and hybrid learning this year, it was able to digitize personalized choice boards for a smooth transition to online learning.”

“We were honored to be able to share the work of our amazing staff, students and families. We also owe a huge thank you to our Hutchinson community who gave us tremendous support over the last 9 months!” said Wiley Principal, Lynette McLean.

"On June 7, our 308 Board of Education is going to have a special meeting with RSP doing a presentation, kind of bringing everyone up to speed," Folks said. "The purpose for that is to, one, share with all the board members kind of where they're at and also we would like for all parents and constituents to watch on Facebook Live."

They really want as much public input as possible as they continue the process. The final report is tentatively scheduled for early 2022.

Updates to be given on RSP study for USD 308

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Dillons stores will change their mask policy to follow CDC guidelines starting Thursday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fully-vaccinated customers and most fully-vaccinated associates no longer need to wear a mask in Dillons stores, distribution centers, plants, and offices, unless otherwise required by state or local jurisdiction. If there is a state or local mandate, Dillons will adhere to that requirement and its timeline. For Kansas, that includes a mask mandate in the city of Lawrence. Non-vaccinated associates will be required to wear a mask.

Associates in Dillons pharmacies and clinic locations will be required to continue wearing a mask due to the CDC’s guidance for healthcare settings.

Dillons updates mask policy

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutch Rec will host its annual Bike to Work Day on Friday. The annual event prompts residents to use their pedal power to commute to and from work.

All of those who pedal to work can stop by and get a free breakfast at DCI Park, RCB Bank at 624 E. 30th and at the Hutchinson Clinic bike trailhead at 23rd and Waldron.

Bike to Work Day is Friday

WASHINGTON, DC —&nbsp; First District Congressman Tracey Mann and Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall, M.D. introduced H.R.3314, legislation in response to President Biden's 30x30 Executive Order.

On January 27, President Biden issued Executive Order 14008, Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad. Section 216 of the order directs the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Secretary of Agriculture, Secretary of Commerce, Chair of the Council on Environmental Quality, and other heads of agencies to achieve the goal of conserving at least 30 percent of our lands and waters by 2030 or 30x30. While a subsequent report was released in May, the lack of details left many questions and concerns remaining from landowners across the country.&nbsp;

More than 98% of land in Kansas is privately owned. Mandating the permanent conservation of 30% of America's land would require expanding federal control over land and undermining private property rights. Additionally, President Biden’s proposal would add to the large number of acres already under federal control.&nbsp;

Rep. Mann and Sens. Moran and Marshall will continue to lead a strong Kansas push to defend private property land rights.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With severe weather season upon us, the city of Hutchinson wanted to remind residents of the warning siren protocols.

When there is a tornado warning for Hutchinson or South Hutchinson the sirens will go off. The sirens will run for three minutes then will go silent for three minutes. This is to cool the sirens so they don’t malfunction.&nbsp;

There is no all clear signal from the sirens so residents need to monitor radio or news posts or have a good weather radio available. Several weather phone apps are also a good way to monitor the weather.

The sirens are an alert to people outdoors. Residents should not rely on the sirens to alert them to severe weather. Please monitor the weather on one of the many sites available.&nbsp;

City of Hutch releases FAQ on weather sirens

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 will offer the summer meal program again this year. The program will look a little different this year with a mix of dine in and carry out meals available.

Starting June 1 meals will be available at HMS-7 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Meals will be dine in or grab and go.

Starting June 7th the meals will be available at the fairgrounds splash park, and the Hutchinson Public Library. Meals will be drive through or walk up service running from 11:15 a.m. until 12:15 p.m.

The service will be expanded even further starting June 9 when they offer drive up or walk up service at Hutchinson High School from 12 p.m. until 12:30 p.m. This service will provide a five-day meal package. This is for those who will not be using the other meal sites.

Those who use the service will get a meal for the day and breakfast for the following day. No registration is needed but children must be present at pick up or have a grab and go meal pass.&nbsp;

The service is open to all children ages 1-18.

Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council got an update from parks director Justin Combs as the plan to put pickleball courts at Rice Park has hit some snags.

"This winter, when we set out the timeline, we did not anticipate having to build a new base for that site," Combs said. "When we broke up the asphalt, it was literally asphalt poured on dirt."

In order to do it right, they had to dig and haul in rock to put a base in.

"The window we had to complete that project, we spent doing that base repair," Combs said. "The base is there. We do have staff, hopefully this week starting again on that site. We haven't completely lost track of it, we just had several other planned projects and a few unplanned that kind of popped up."

They'll be able to get back to it after Salt City Splash is open for the season.

"We also had a project at the airport that we are working on," Combs said. "Splash pads are open as of this week, so that was a big push. The pool opens in two weeks and that will be our next focus, is back to the pickleball court."

The work should be finished sometime this summer.

Pickleball court process slowed in Hutchinson

INMAN, Kan. — A Hutchinson man was killed after his Honda Accord hydroplaned and struck a bridge pillar on K-61 near Inman Tuesday afternoon.

According to McPherson County Sheriff Jerry Montagne, deputies were dispatched just after 4 p.m. Tuesday to the scene where the 8th Avenue bridge goes over the highway.&nbsp;

Inman Fire and McPherson EMS rendered life saving measures but despite those efforts, 27-year-old Andrew A. Tolbert was pronounced dead just before 4:30 p.m.&nbsp;

The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office would like to offer their condolences to the family.

Now the state’s largest farm organization is rolling out the second phase of the program, which will provide grant funding for county Farm Bureaus and local Farm Bureau Financial Services agents so together they can develop projects in their communities. The program will continue providing donations to local food pantries. “We were thrilled with the success we saw in phase one,” Terry Holdren, CEO of Kansas Farm Bureau, says. “This second phase will provide the same opportunities while also offering added flexibility to tackle specific hunger issues in communities head on.” Grant funds will target the issues that impact food insecurity. KFB’s End Hunger campaign now offers grant funding for hunger projects in local communities

The Hutchinson City Council will await information from an expert on conversion therapy and its consequences, after comments from council member Jade Piros de Carvalho on Tuesday.

"Conversion therapy is an attempt to change sexual orientation," Piros de Carvalho said. "It's usually targeted at youths. Communities in Kansas are banning the practice in minors. I was wondering if the city council might consider adopting a similar ordinance as adopted in Roeland Park and Lawrence."

Mayor Steve Garza asked for more information on the topic when Piros de Carvalho suggested bringing in an expert.

"I think that would be great," Garza said. "I really don't understand it, so I would like for you to do that."

When <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/97b4ea90-83a0-44d7-aa19-9323af704881">Lawrence passed their ordinance</a>, commissioners there said research has shown the practice is harmful to children’s mental health and increases the risk of suicide. No timeline was given as for when the expert might be available or who might be asked.

Hutchinson city council member raises conversion therapy issue at Tuesday meeting

Hutchinson USD 308 will make the decision about whether Sunday's graduation is inside or outside later this week.

"Depending on which tea leaves you look at, we have anywhere from a not chance of rain to a 60% chance on Sunday," said spokesperson Ray Hemman. "It gets very complicated. We're very blessed to have a great maintenance crew. The stage and the chairs that Buhler will use on Saturday in the Sports Arena are our facilities. We either have to leave those in place in the Sports Arena or our crews have to then move them to Gowans Saturday afternoon and Sunday."

The intent of having the ceremony scheduled for Gowans Stadium was to be able to allow for more attendance due to different social distancing outside than inside. Regardless, Superintendent Mike Folks is proud of the resilience of the Class of 2021.

"It's been a tumultuous, you know, almost two years now during the pandemic," Folks said. "They have shown a lot of grit and determination and stayed with us. Since we've been back in session full time, it has been an opportunity for some normalcy. We hope that, as we have the celebration on Sunday, it's another opportunity for a normal event."

Each graduate will be allowed eight guests. The district will also be live streaming the ceremony for those that cannot attend or are medically compromised. Graduates need to be at the Salthawk Activity Center on Sunday, May 23, by 1:15 p.m. to get lined up.

Decision on USD 308 graduation site depends on weather

Your child can become a Kitchen Hero THIS summer!

Kitchen Hero Academy (KHA) is proud to offer a free 10-week summer cooking program in partnership with Spark United Church of the Nazarene and HutchRec. This program is for students who have completed 6th and 7th grade in USD 308. No previous experience in cooking is needed. We’re here to teach our heroes all the skills they’ll need to make healthy, affordable, and delicious meals for a lifetime.

Hutchinson local, Megan Bartley, is a doctoral student in Boston University's entry-level Occupational Therapy program. Occupational therapy is a health profession that works to support the health and well-being of people across the lifespan through participation in meaningful and important everyday activities. As part of her doctoral studies, Megan will be using her expertise and experience in designing health promoting, group-based cooking skills programs to ensure the success of all Kitchen Hero Academy participants this summer. Megan will be supported by volunteers from the Hutchinson community and will be using recipes from Boston University's Sargent Choice Nutrition Center.

This program is free for all participants. Weekly programming will occur every Tuesday and Thursday morning beginning June 1 through August 5th, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Senior Center at Elmdale Park (400 E Ave E St, Hutchinson, KS 67501). Transportation not provided.

KHA's community-wide kick-off event is Friday, May 21st at 6:30 p.m. at the Senior Center at Elmdale Park. Join us for free food, inflatables, and a screening of the movie Ratatouille. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket!

Local church, Hutch Rec partnering for cooking class

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The cool weather continues to put some pressure on the wheat crop as the harvest is now less than two months away.

Still, the numbers released from the Kansas Ag Statistics are positive. According to the latest release, only 15% of the wheat is in poor to very poor shape, 31% fair and 54% good to excellent.&nbsp;

There is still concern that the very cold weather may have hurt the crop. More should be known as the annual field tours are underway.&nbsp;

Here in south-central Kansas, 98% of the wheat is jointed and 85% of the crop has headed. The maturity of the crop statewide is running a little behind schedule.

Wheat crop is dealing with cool, damp weather

CHENEY, Kan. — Cheney Reservoir and State Park will be a very busy place again this summer. Last year, the pandemic drove many out to parks and lakes to enjoy social distancing. Officials at the park expect more of the same this year. The automated reservation system introduced two years ago has allowed campers to get their reservations well ahead of time. As of February, most of the campsites for the three major holidays have been sold out.

One thing that has been an ongoing problem at the lake is also going to be addressed this summer. That is the marina boat ramp. The marina ramp on the lake's east side has been deteriorating over the past several years and it looks like work could begin on that ramp no later than early July.

Plans have been in the works to rebuild the ramp, but delays and then flooding in 2019 have made getting the work done difficult. According to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, plans are to do the work in sections so as to not completely close off the ramp, which gets very busy on the weekends. Work will include removing the asphalt approaches and replacing them with concrete and repairing the in-water ramps.

Plans are also in the works to build a new boat dock at the lake's west boat ramp near the dam. Plans are to have the work finished by Labor Day.

Cheney sells out camping nearly every weekend and on a holiday weekend can take in around 50,000 visitors.

HUTCHINSON – Amidst such a challenging year, the importance of distinguishing the hard work of educators is more crucial than ever. Jenny Sullivan was named the Classified Employee of the Year in Hutchinson USD 308 Tuesday.&nbsp; Sullivan has been with the district since August of 2014, working as a Modified Specialized Para for Hutchinson High School.

The district said in a news release, "Sullivan is an enthusiastic team member that knows the importance of building positive relationships with her students and her co-workers.&nbsp; She works with students in the community and in the classroom, and is always ready to adapt and adjust to whatever the situation may be. Sullivan’s insight and compassion for the challenges that we all face is part of what makes her the exceptional worker that she is."

“I’m not someone that can just sit and wait for the student to come to me, that is not what I was hired to do,” shared Sullivan in an interview with the Classified Committee, the group that chooses the recipient of this annual award.

Sullivan was presented with the honor at&nbsp;Hutchinson High School’s annual all-staff cookout Tuesday.

RENO COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident during a chase just before 7a.m. Tuesday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a Reno County sheriff's deputy was in pursuit of a 2000 Suzuki&nbsp;GSX 750FY Katana driven by Michael Scot Gaston,&nbsp; 29, Wichita, in the 1100 Block of East 17th Avenue.

The driver was reported as an erratic driver.&nbsp; Gaston lost control of the motorcycle and then laid the bike over.

EMS transported Gaston and a passenger Breann Elizabeth Bowles, 26, Wichita, to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. They were not wearing helmets or riding equipment, according to the KHP.

2 hospitalized after motorcycle crash during chase

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It's usually a small challenge to find enough employees for the Salt City Splash each year. This year it's becoming an even taller task. Manager Ted Nelson notes that the pool is short of the desired 40 lifeguards needed for the summer.

“We have 10 less lifeguards than what we would like to have,” Nelson said. “We are putting out ad campaigns and contacting high schools and swim teams and prior employees&nbsp; and current employees and anyone we can think of.”

The next lifeguard training session at the YMCA begins the first of June. Nelson says that anyone worried about having to pay the class fee to become a lifeguard can put that to rest.

“What people don’t know is that Hutch Rec will pay back the full cost of that course. So it ends up being zero dollars for them,” Nelson said.

The pool also needs workers for other duties during the summer. As far as other employees to help run the pool, that's not looking too bad.

“We’re looking good on admissions and we could probably use a couple more applicants for the maintenance and custodial positions,” Nelson said. “We’re also looking at 15 and older (employees) to run concessions. Usually that’s the overloaded one when it comes to applications.”

Nelson said that anyone who runs concessions can also work at Hobart Detter field during baseball or at Fun Valley.

To be a lifeguard you must be at least 15 years of age and have good swimming skills. The pool opens Saturday, May 29.

Salt City Splash is short of lifeguards

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The rainfall is starting to become a problem for the usual flood prone areas north and west of Hutchinson.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for areas along Cow Creek between Hutchinson and Nickerson.

Cow Creek is expected to rise just above flood stage on Wednesday morning and then fall back below that level by Thursday morning.

With the projected level, Sallee Road between 82nd and 108th will flood. 95th Avenue between Sallee and Dean Roads will likely become impassable. Many other township roads may also close due to high water.

Rain is in the forecast off and on for the next week, which could cause more flooding around the area.

Flooding could become a problem this week in Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Works announced Tuesday that work crews will be performing shoulder work along&nbsp; State Fair Road starting Wednesday, weather permitting.&nbsp;

During the work State Fair Road will be closed to traffic between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Traffic Control will be placed at Main Street and Plum Street to inform motorists of the closure. If all goes as planned, the work should be completed by Monday, May 24.

&nbsp;In the event work is delayed by weather, State Fair Rd will be reopened and information on when the work will resume will be released.&nbsp;

Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council approved the contract for City Manager Jeff Cantrell with a 2.5% merit increase on Tuesday, which brings his compensation to approximately $167,000 plus benefits. 

"Thank you all for continuation and support of my position and the working relationship we have developed over the last year in a very challenging environment, perhaps the most challenging of my career, spanning well over 20 years," Cantrell said. "Thank you for that. Looking forward to serving the next year."

Those benefits include a $500 per month vehicle allowance, a $90 per month cell phone allowance and vacation and executive leave days along with the customary senior management medical and dental benefits, sick leave and holiday schedules.

Kan. —&nbsp;As part of its 100th anniversary celebration, Dillons is working on a book so everyone who wants one can have a piece of their history.

"We're putting together a complete book of all of the wonderful photos from our history," said Sheila Regehr with Dillons. "The archives at Dillons are absolutely amazing. In this book, we've captured our history with timelines, with wonderful photos, with pieces from the archive. Whether its the original ticker tape from the very first appearance on the New York Stock Exchange, to some of the ad templates that we may have used back in the 70s and the 80s, captured all of that history together in one book."

The hope is to have those out well before the Kansas State Fair. 

"We're looking at late July, early August, where the book will be available, but when you think about our reach across the state of Kansas, for me personally, it's so humbling to hear those very kind words," Regehr said. "I can't tell you how many times I've heard a customer refer to one of our locations as 'their Dillons". That's another reason why I think people will love to see this book and love to see the history laid out."

The plan is to have a big presence for employees, former employees and the public at the Kansas State Fair and also to help the hungry across the Sunflower State.

"Throughout 2020, we were able to provide more than $2 million back to our Kansas communities," Regehr said. "With our 100th Anniversary, we're dedicating $100,000 from our Zero Hunger, Zero Waste Foundation, specifically to support hunger relief efforts in Kansas."

The official 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Dillons was May 13.

Dillons putting together book to commemorate 100 years

Kan. — The Hutchinson Landmarks Commission is having its next meeting Thursday at 4 p.m. in the City Council chambers at 125 East Ave. B. This meeting was moved up a week from its traditional placement on the 4th Thursday of the month.

New business before the commission is four requests from the current occupant of the Stevens Building at 225 S. Main to add an 800 square foot pool in their side yard, replace metal siding with 29-gauge sheet metal, frame in seven garage doors and install French doors in the east two bays along the south facade and to add a 40 ft. shipping container to the side yard.

The Landmarks Commission will need to make a determination on the proposed project as to whether the proposed project will “damage or destroy” the historic significance of the structure or the district? This determination should be based upon a finding that the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation are either met or not met.

The Landmarks Commission may approve the project in whole or in part, approve the project subject to certain modifications, or deny the project. If the Landmarks Commission denies the project, the Commission must state the reason for the denial and list acceptable project alternatives. The applicant may then alter the plans to comply with the alternatives, and staff will issue a certificate of appropriateness.

If the applicant determines that the project alternative that the Landmarks Commission has requested is not feasible, the applicant may appeal the decision of the Landmarks Commission to the City Council. If the proposal is appealed, City Council will, after a consideration of all relevant factors, weigh the proposal against the standard of “no feasible and prudent alternative” to the project.

Landmarks Commission to look at Stevens Building project

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department hopes to receive a shipment of Pfizer vaccine this week and will open availability to ages 12 and older starting Thursday, May 20.&nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced last week that Kansas providers could begin offering the vaccine to the younger age group. This followed the expansion of the emergency use authorization by the FDA and approval by the CDC.

The Health Department will be open until 8 p.m. Thursday and have Pfizer vaccine available for anyone over 12 years of age, and the Moderna and Johnson &amp; Johnson for anyone over 18. No appointment is necessary. Those under 18 will need parent or guardian approval.

The Health Department also accepts walk-ins during normal operating hours, which are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
