Short line railroads to benefit from grants

Posted Aug 17, 2021 8:20 PM

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two short line railroads that serve Hutchinson will benefit from funding made available for major improvements to areas they serve.

The Hutchison Transportation Company, which serves Hutchinson Salt Company and the Siemens facility, will receive $513,000 in funding for rail and switch improvements around the interchanges with BNSF and the Union Pacific.

The K and O Railroad, which serves Yoder, Nickerson, Hutchinson and Haven, will benefit from a large portion of the funding as it will be used at four grain elevators to lengthen rail sidings and improve track and switches at those facilities. A fifth award will repair a crossing in Wichita.

The work includes elevators in Scott City, McCracken, Great Bend and Wichita.

The Short Line Rail Improvement Fund provides $5 million annually for three years. The program was created as part of the Kelly Administration’s 10-year, bipartisan Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program.
