Garcia slashed .296/.343/.490 (29-for-98) over 25 games last month and ranked 2nd among all Royals with 12 extra-base hits, including 8 doubles, 1 triple and 3 home runs. On June 18 against the Rangers in Arlington, he hit his 8th home run of the season, already establishing a new career high and passing his 7 home runs in 157 games last season. He recorded multiple hits in 9 of his 25 games in June, which tied for the 13th-most such games in the American League last month, trailing leader&nbsp;Yandy Díaz&nbsp;(14). Overall, Garcia is putting together one of the best seasons of his career, as he leads all Royals with 29 multi-hit efforts, which are tied for 3rd most in the American League, 5 such games behind leaders&nbsp;Jacob Wilson&nbsp;and&nbsp;Aaron Judge&nbsp;(34 each). U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley has added former Kansas Jayhawk and Topeka native Gary Woodland as the fifth and final vice captain for the 45th Ryder Cup, set for Sept. 23-28, 2025, at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York.

This marks Woodland’s first appearance in the Ryder Cup in any capacity. The 41-year-old previously represented the United States in the 2019 Presidents Cup in Australia, contributing 1.5 points in the team’s 16-14 win at Royal Melbourne.

“I’m incredibly honored and grateful to Keegan for this opportunity,” Woodland said in a statement released by the Ryder Cup. “Keegan’s passion for this event is contagious, and I’m excited to be part of it. With just over two months until we arrive at Bethpage, I’m fully committed to supporting the team in every way I can.”

Woodland, who turned professional in 2007 after graduating from the University of Kansas, has been a regular on the PGA TOUR since 2009. He’s a four-time winner, including his signature victory at the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. Over 383 career starts, Woodland has logged 56 top-10 finishes.

Earlier this year, Woodland received the PGA TOUR Courage Award for overcoming significant health challenges and continuing to make a lasting impact on the sport.

At KU, Woodland was a two-time All-Big 12 selection and won four individual titles for the Jayhawks, cementing his place among the program’s all-time greats. He joins Jim Furyk, Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker as vice captains for the 2025 squad.

“Gary has earned tremendous respect throughout the golf world,” Bradley said. “He’s a major champion and still competing at a high level. His leadership and experience will be a valuable asset for our team as we prepare for Bethpage.”

AUGUSTA, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs continued their strong summer campaign Tuesday night with an 11-2 road victory over the Kansas Cannons, improving their season record to 16-5.

Pryce Bender led the way on the mound for Hutchinson, earning the win with a five-inning performance in which he allowed just one run on four hits. The right-hander struck out four and walked only one in a composed outing.

Blake Seefeldt took the loss for the Cannons, surrendering six runs — five earned — over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six but allowed six hits, walked two, and hit three batters.

The Monarchs broke open a tight 1-1 contest in the top of the third. With two runners on and one out, Jake Gutierrez hit a grounder that was misplayed by shortstop Zeb Henry, allowing two runs to score and giving Hutchinson a 2-1 lead.

Third baseman Joey Senstock sparked more offense in the fourth with a two-out RBI triple, and then added the decisive blow in the sixth with a three-run homer to left that pushed the Monarchs’ advantage to 6-1.

Hutchinson added five more runs over the final three innings, aided by timely hitting and four walks from Cannons relievers. Tyson Vassart singled home a run in the ninth, and Gutierrez scored on a wild pitch earlier in the frame to cap the Monarchs' scoring.

Bender got help from relievers Bryant Siemens and Whit Rhodes, who combined to finish the final four innings. Siemens struck out four in two innings of one-run ball, and Rhodes closed out the final two frames, working around a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to preserve the win.

The Cannons (12-10-1) struggled to convert opportunities, stranding multiple runners in the late innings and hitting into two double plays.

Hutchinson returns to action tonight versus the Wichita Black Sox. On Saturday night, they take on the Kingman Islanders in a game postponed from mid-June due to weather at Hobart-Detter Field in Carey Park. First pitch will be at 7pm.

SEATTLE (AP) — The late sunsets that accompany Seattle summers are revered by most locals, but the odds are Mariners center fielder Julio Rodríguez was not a fan during the fifth inning of Tuesday night's game against the Kansas City Royals.

Rodríguez lost a flyball to center field from Royals catcher Salvador Perez in the twilight sky, and it turned into a two-run double.

Rodríguez climbed the center field wall, trying to rob a home run, but he misjudged the ball and it bounced off the wall nearby.

Not only did Perez's double give the Royals a 5-1 lead en route to a 6-3 victory, but it moved him past Alex Gordon for the sixth-most hits in Royals history. The 35-year-old backstop has 1,646 hits in 14-season MLB career.

“For him to just keep checking boxes on a Hall of Fame career is really special to be able to watch," said manager Matt Quatraro.

Raleigh led off the seventh inning with a home run against reliever Daniel Lynch IV, prompting chants of “MVP! MVP!” from the home crowd.

Arozarena hit his 100th career homer with a solo shot in the fourth to give Seattle its first run. In the fifth, he broke open the game with a three-run drive, his 10th of the season. It was the first multihomer game for Arozarena since July 20, 2024.

George Kirby (2-4) allowed one run and three hits in six innings, striking out five without a walk. He also permitted just one run and three hits over six innings his previous time out at Minnesota.

Royals starter Michael Wacha (4-8) gave up five runs and eight hits over five innings.

Bobby Witt Jr. had two RBIs for the Royals.

Kansas City loaded the bases with one out in the eighth against reliever Trent Thornton, who then retired Witt and Maikel Garcia on grounders to limit the damage to one run.

Raleigh also had a sacrifice fly in the fifth. He leads the majors with 71 RBIs. ... Witt has at least one hit in 20 straight road games, two shy of the franchise record.

He led the team in steals (1.8 spg.), blocks (1.3 bpg.), defensive rebounds (151) and minutes (33.6 mpg.), while he was second in rebounding (6.9 rpg.) and assists (4.3 apg.), third in field goals made (120) and fourth in scoring (10.7 ppg.). ATLANTA — Major League Baseball announced Monday the rosters for the 2025 All-Star Futures Game, scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at Truist Park in Atlanta.

Among the 50 top prospects selected for the annual showcase are a pair of Kansas City Royals farmhands: catcher Carter Jensen and left-handed pitcher Frank Mozzicato.

Jensen, ranked No. 80 on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospects list, is the No. 3 prospect in the Royals’ system. Mozzicato, the No. 12 prospect in the organization, is currently pitching for Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Mozzicato has posted a 1-2 record with a 4.29 ERA in 14 starts this season. Over 63 innings, he has recorded 55 strikeouts, allowed 45 hits, and held opposing hitters to a .206 batting average.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Brayden McClure delivered a quality start on the mound and the Hutchinson Monarchs offense came alive early as Hutchinson earned a 10-5 win over the Kansas Cannons at Hobart-Detter Field on Sunday night.

McClure went seven innings, allowing four runs on five hits, striking out three and walking two. The victory moved the Monarchs to 15-5 on the season.

Hutchinson scored in each of the first two innings to build a 3-0 lead. Jeter Worthley and Jake Gutierrez drew back-to-back walks to open the bottom of the first, and both would eventually come around to score. A sacrifice fly from Blake Bradford and an RBI double by Jake Knox helped pace the early offense.

After the Cannons closed the gap to 3-2 by the fourth, Hutchinson responded with a big sixth inning. The Monarchs plated five runs, highlighted by another sacrifice fly from AJ Mustow and RBI singles from Tyson Vassart and Omare Cross. The Monarchs tacked on a final run in the seventh on a Bradford RBI double to push the lead to 10-4.

The Cannons managed one more run in the eighth, but reliever Drew Vinduska closed the door with two scoreless innings to secure the win.

The Cannons were led by Hunter Alvord, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Starting pitcher Gavin Hoffman took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits and five walks across two innings.

The Monarchs have Monday off before hitting the road Tuesday for a rematch with the Cannons in Augusta. The roundtripper kickstarted a five-run eighth inning that led to Wichita winning the series over the Cardinals.
Two unearned runs crossed for Springfield in the top of the first on an errant throw and a Chase Davis sacrifice fly to center.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.milb.com/player/gabriel-gonzalez-694224">Gabby Gonzalez</a>&nbsp;slid home safely on a wild pitch to cut the lead in half and make the score 2-1 Cardinals after an inning.
Leonardo Bernal brought one in on a bloop single to right in the top of the third, and Gonzalez responded with a single of his own through the left side in the home half of the inning to make the series finale a one-run game again.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kiké Hernández hit a two-run homer, Will Smith also went deep and the Los Angeles Dodgers got a dominant performance from Justin Wrobleski and the rest of their bullpen in a rain-delayed 5-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

Wrobleski (4-2) pitched six innings of three-hit ball in place of opener Lou Trivino, Kirby Yates worked a perfect eighth and Jack Dreyer handled the ninth, helping Los Angeles win for the sixth time in seven games.

Max Muncy and Miguel Rojas also drove in runs for the Dodgers, who have won six consecutive series.

Kris Bubic (6-6) allowed Hernández's two-run shot in the second inning among his three hits and two walks in five innings. The left-hander struck out five but still took his fourth loss in his last five starts, despite maintaining a 2.25 ERA.

Bobby Witt Jr. doubled in the first to score the only run for the Royals, who have lost seven of their last eight games.

Both of the teams paid homage to the Negro Leagues, whose museum is less than 10 miles from Kauffman Stadium. D. Wayne Lukas, the Hall of Famer who became one of the most accomplished trainers in the history of horse racing and a face of the sport for decades, has died. He was 89.

His family said Sunday that Lukas died Saturday night at his Louisville, Kentucky, home.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/d-wayne-lukas-hosptialized-3696adc1800e69d3f7708374bd444d1c">Lukas had been hospitalized</a>&nbsp;with a severe MRSA blood infection that caused significant damage to his heart and digestive system and worsened pre-existing chronic conditions.

“Wayne devoted his life not only to horses but to the industry — developing generations of horsemen and horsewomen and growing the game by inviting unsuspecting fans into the winner’s circle,” his family said in a statement. “Whether he was boasting about a maiden 2-year-old as the next Kentucky Derby winner or offering quiet words of advice before a big race, Wayne brought heart, grace, and grit to every corner of the sport. His final days were spent at home in Kentucky, where he chose peace, family, and faith.”

Lukas won 15 Triple Crown races, including the Kentucky Derby four times. Only good friend Bob Baffert has more Triple Crown victories, and Lukas owns a record-tying 20 in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

“The whole secret of this game, I think, is being able to read the horse: Read what he needs, what he doesn’t need, what he can’t do, what he can do,” Lukas said in May before his 34th and final Preakness Stakes. “That’s the whole key. Everybody’s got the blacksmith, everybody’s got to the same bed available, the feed man. We all can hire a good jockey. We all can hire a pretty good exercise rider if we’ve got the means, so what the hell is the difference? The horse is the difference and what we do with him in reading him.”

Lukas was affectionately known around the barns and the racetrack as “Coach” because he coached high school basketball before his professional career with horses began. Even with months to go before his 90th birthday, he would get up on his pony in the early morning hours and go out to the track himself, rather than letting his assistants do the day-to-day work.

Born Darnell Wayne Lukas on Sept. 2, 1935, in Wisconsin as the second of three children, he rose to prominence in the sport with quarter horses in races that are effectively sprints. He moved into thoroughbreds in the late 1970s and won his first Preakness with Codex in 1980.

Lukas has 4,967 documented victories in thoroughbred racing, with his horses earning more than $310 million from more than 30,600 starts.

Achieving something of a career renaissance over the past decade, one he credits to finding the right owners willing to spend money on horses, Lukas won the Preakness last year with Seize the Grey. Asked what motivates him to keep doing his job well into his late 80s, he gave a pep talk fit for a locker room before a big game.

“If you have a passion, you eliminate all the excuses,” Lukas said. “That’s how it works. You get up early. You go without a meal. You drive. You go without sleep — as long as you got the passion. Don’t let that sofa pull you down. It’s a little easy when that alarm goes off to say, ‘Oh my God, I don’t know if I really want to do this today.’ Erase that. The most important decision you’ll ever make in your life is your attitude decision. Make it early, and make the right one.”

His final days were spent at home in Kentucky, where he chose peace, family, and faith.”Lukas won 15 Triple Crown races, including the Kentucky Derby four times. Hall of Fame horse trainer D. Wayne Lukas, a winner of 15 Triple Crown races, dies at 89

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs dropped their first home game of the summer Saturday night, falling 13-6 to the Derby Twins at Hobart-Detter Field.

The Twins erupted for seven runs in the seventh inning, breaking open what had been a close game and handing the Monarchs their first home loss of the 2025 season. Hutchinson now sits at 14-5 on the year and will look to rebound Sunday night against the Kansas Cannons. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Despite leading 4-2 after five innings, the Monarchs couldn’t hold off a relentless Derby offense that tallied 14 hits and capitalized on Hutchinson’s miscues, including two costly errors and a wild pitch in the seventh that helped spark the rally.

Griffin Cooley, Joel Lindahl, and Cade Sutherland led the charge for Derby. Sutherland crushed a two-run homer to center in the seventh and added a two-run triple in the ninth, finishing with four RBIs. Lindahl added a bases-clearing double to cap the seventh-inning outburst.

Monarchs starter Ethan Giesbrecht pitched effectively through five innings, striking out eight and allowing just three runs before the Twins’ bats came alive against the Hutchinson bullpen.

Jake Gutierrez paced the Monarchs at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two RBI's in his debut as a Monarch. Gutierrez is from Lubbock, Texas and just joined the Monarchs. Jackson Legg added three hits and an RBI double, while Dylan Bell scored twice and drew two walks.

Hutchinson had a chance to respond late, scoring in the seventh and eighth innings to cut the deficit to 10-6, but the Twins tacked on three more in the ninth to seal the victory.

The loss ends a dominant home stretch for the Monarchs, who had previously gone 8-0 at Hobart-Detter to open the season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Vinnie Pasquantino homered, doubled and drove in a career high-tying five runs, and the Kansas City Royals beat Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-5 on Saturday to snap an 11-game home losing streak.

Ohtani made his third start of the season and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dodgers-shohei-ohtani-pitching-882646a3578e99e4c81b1c0e774df7d1">threw the fastest pitch</a>&nbsp;of his career, a 101.7 mph fastball that induced an inning-ending double-play grounder by Pasquantino in the first.

The Dodgers' two-way superstar threw 27 pitches in two scoreless innings. He is working as an opener as he eases back into pitching following Tommy John surgery in 2023. Ohtani went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts as LA's leadoff batter.

Hutchinson jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first. Joey Senstock delivered a two-run single to right field, plating Blake Bradford and Jeter Worthley to put the Monarchs ahead 2-0.

The Twins responded in the bottom of the second when Griffin Cooley’s aggressive baserunning and a pair of Monarchs errors cut the lead in half. Cooley stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Jeter Worthley, and scored on a miscue in center field by Tyler Mitchell to make it 2-1.

In the fourth, Bradford extended Hutchinson’s lead to 3-1 with a line-drive double to center, scoring Worthley.

Derby clawed back with a run in the fifth off an RBI single from Rolen Driskoll and tied the game in the sixth when Noah Allison launched a solo homer to left field.

The Monarchs regained control in the seventh. With the bases loaded, Mitchell drew a walk to force in Drew Bugner, and Worthley followed with a single to score Senstock, giving Hutchinson a 5-3 cushion.

Derby made things interesting in the bottom of the eighth when Joel Lindahl homered to left, trimming the lead to 5-4, but Hutchinson’s bullpen held on in the ninth to seal the win.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson.
