MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Following his two-interception performance in Kansas State's 41-28 Homecoming victory over TCU, senior linebacker Des Purnell has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.

It is the first-ever conference weekly award for Purnell and the first for a Wildcat defender since Kobe Savage earned the nod after the Texas Tech contest in 2023.

A native of Topeka, Kansas, Purnell came away with eight tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, a sack and two pass breakups in addition to his two picks. On back-to-back plays in the third quarter, Purnell recorded an eight-yard sack before picking off a pass and returning it 25 yards for a touchdown. It was K-State's first pick-6 since current San Francisco 49er&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/marques-sigle/11808">Marques Sigle</a>&nbsp;returned an interception 43 yards for a score last year at West Virginia.

Purnell had another interception in the fourth quarter, one he returned 21 yards that led to a K-State field goal to make it a three-score game.

Purnell is one of three linebackers in the country this season to record multiple interceptions in a game, while he is one of only two Big 12 linebackers since 2022 to accomplish the feat. He was the first K-State linebacker with two picks in a game since Elijah Lee against TCU in 2015.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs knew they were going to have a fight on their hands when the Detroit Lions, riding a four-game winning streak and a whole bunch of momentum, rolled into Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday night.

They probably didn't expect their dominant performance to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lions-chiefs-fight-brian-branch-e1f8f03a80052ad16856673846b2791c">end with an actual fistfight</a>.

Mahomes threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns, scrambled for another score, and led Kansas City to a 30-17 victory that was so comprehensive that Lions safety Brian Branch boiled over at its conclusion. Branch delivered a right hook to Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster as the teams were coming together at midfield, touching off a brief melee among players.

“It is what it is,” Mahomes said. “You just kind of move on. We won the football game.”

Marquise Brown had two touchdown receptions and Xavier Worthy had another for the Chiefs (3-3), who played a near-flawless game — no penalties, no turnovers — one week after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-analysis-1bf025fe0f083690f71bc75f47417202">a mistake-strewn, last-second loss</a>&nbsp;at Jacksonville.

Kansas City also managed to hold in check the NFL's highest-scoring offense to snap Detroit's winning streak.

“We just didn't make the plays we needed to make,” said Lions coach Dan Campbell, who began his postgame briefing by saying that Branch's cheap shot was “inexcusable and not going to be accepted here," and that he had apologized to the Chiefs for it.

“We were able to do some good things in phases at times but not enough for a team like that with the pedigrees they have,” Campbell continued. “We were not able to compliment each other and we were not able to make it a game, really. We weren't.”

Jared Goff finished with 203 yards passing for the Lions (4-2), though he did connect with Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta for scores. Amon-Ra St. Brown was held to 45 yards receiving and Jahmyr Gibbs needed 17 carries to gain just 65 yards.

Detroit was intent on trying to grind down the Chiefs' defense and keep their potent offense off the field.

The Lions did a good job on the opening drive, too. They ran 15 plays over a 9:39 span, chewing up so much clock that Mahomes looked downright bored on the sideline. And it looked as if it would pay off when David Montgomery took a direct snap and threw to Goff, who powered into the end zone from a yard out for a touchdown.

But the officials came together to discuss the play, and even though nobody had thrown a flag, they eventually said Goff was not set — an illegal motion penalty. After a delay of game, the Lions had to settle for Jake Bates' chip-shot field goal.

“I've got to do a little research on exactly what went wrong,” Goff said.

Kansas City wasted no time answering, marching 70 yards in eight plays. Mahomes hit three receivers on the drive, and Worthy hauled in a 6-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal to give the Chiefs the lead.

The back-and-forth continued throughout the first half: The Lions went the other way with Williams grabbing a 22-yard pass to give them the lead back, and the Chiefs answered with Mahomes scoring on a keeper for a 13-10 edge at halftime.

“It was important to get that lead back and get the momentum and get the crowd going,” Mahomes said.

The banged-up Lions defense, missing cornerbacks D.J. Reed, Terrion Arnold and Avonte Maddox, couldn't slow down the Chiefs, who are finding their offensive mojo again just in time to get suspended wide receiver Rashee Rice back next week.

They roared downfield on the opening drive of the second half, this time with Marquise Brown hauling in the touchdown catch to extend the lead. And when the Lions finally answered behind a flurry of passes to St. Brown and a nifty toss to LaPorta in the end zone, Kansas City rolled right back downfield as Marquise Brown pulled in another touchdown reception for a 27-17 lead.

Detroit proceeded to go three-and-out, and the Chiefs put the game away from there.

“I'm disappointing, you know? I'm disappointed, because it's been a long time ago since you were watching someone kneel it three times in front of you, and it's not even close,” Campbell said. “We got worked pretty good. So yeah, it's disappointing.”

The Chiefs played&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-detroit-lions-e5f1f4336f1f82195304345e8a892b7b">without left tackle Josh Simmons,</a>&nbsp;their first-round pick, who had a personal issue that kept him from making it back to Kansas City for the game. In the American Sprint Car Series 360 Winged division, Whit Gastineau of Moore, Oklahoma, capped off his year with a dominant performance, going back-to-back to sweep the weekend at Salt City. Gastineau led the field through both the dash and the 20-lap feature, fending off Brady Baker of Alexander, Arkansas, and Matt Covington of Glenpool, Oklahoma, who rounded out the podium. Sam Hafertepe Jr. of Sunnyvale, Texas, finished fourth, followed by Quinter’s Zach Blurton in fifth.

Gastineau’s clean sweep solidified his late-season momentum, showcasing the precision and control that made him a standout among the ASCS National field.

In Stock Car action, veteran racer John Allen of Chanute, Kansas, claimed the 20-lap A Feature victory, edging out Mike Petersilie of Hoisington for the top spot. Hutchinson’s Scott Miller drove a steady race to finish third, followed by fellow locals Tanner Thiel in fourth and Chris Pitts in fifth.

The night’s earlier Stock Car Dash saw Rodney Schweizer of Kansas City take the win over Allen and Petersilie, setting the stage for an exciting feature that closed out the local stock division’s 2025 campaign.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Cameron Dickey ran for a career-high 263 yards and two long touchdowns, Will Hammond scored twice after replacing&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texas-tech-behren-morton-injury-1c7e3fb079b539e0a158fbc690d0d37c">injured quarterback Behren Morton</a>&nbsp;and No. 9 Texas Tech beat Kansas 42-17 on Saturday night.

Dickey sprinted 71 yards on the first offensive play for the Red Raiders and added a 55-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter. With co-lead back J'Koby Williams slowed by an injury, Dickey had 21 carries, another career best.

Texas Tech (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) had 372 yards rushing and recovered from a malaise after Morton's injury in the school's first game as an AP top 10 team since 2013.

“We felt like we could run the football against the these guys,” coach Joey McGuire said. “Those two guys feed off each other. J’Koby’s a little banged up, and Cam got the majority of the load and offensive line really played well tonight in the run game.”

A 21-0 Texas Tech lead was down to four points at the break when the Jayhawks (4-3, 2-2) scored on three of their first four possessions after Morton appeared to injure his lower right leg on a sack in the second quarter. He didn't return.

Hammond threw an interception and the Red Raiders punted on his other three possessions before halftime. But the redshirt freshman ran 20 yards for a touchdown on the first drive of the second half.

Dickey's second long TD put Texas Tech up 35-17, and Hammond's 10-yard run finished the scoring. Hammond had 61 yards rushing.

It's the third time Hammond has come on with Morton not returning this season. Morton&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texas-tech-behren-morton-injury-13a9ea7986c7bce290c62d0cce241947">hyperextended his right knee</a>&nbsp;in a 67-7 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the season opener and was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texas-tech-behren-morton-utah-ded4ee663707dff8a8f086842cd111e6">sidelined in a 34-10 win over Utah</a>&nbsp;after taking a hard hit to the head.

Jalon Daniels threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns for Kansas, which dropped to 1-12 in Lubbock and has lost 24 of 26 meetings with the Red Raiders.

“Our margin of error against a top 10 team is going to be pretty small, and we’ve got to play a lot more sound,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “We had trouble blocking them all second half, especially. That’s a really good defensive front. I think it showed up tonight no doubt.”

Kansas: The Jayhawks had all the momentum with the way they finished the first half after Morton's injury. They couldn't sustain it. Kansas punted on its five possessions after the break.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders gave up some big pass plays to help Kansas get back in the game, but still sacked Daniels eight times. David Bailey had three of them. Texas Tech had a ninth sack on backup Cole Ballard in the final seconds.

Kansas: Off next week before getting rival Kansas State at home Oct. 25.

Texas Tech: At No. 21 Arizona State, the defending Big 12 champion, next Saturday.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Avery Johnson threw three touchdown passes — two to Garrett Oakley — and Kansas State added two defensive touchdowns to defeat TCU 41-28 Saturday afternoon. Des Purnell had two interceptions, including a pick-6, for the Wildcats.

“I thought we played well in all three phases at times,” Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said. “There’s always going to be things that we’ve got to get better at. But we came out with energy, with urgency. We came out with physicality, and did some really good things.”

Johnson finished 16-of-26 passing for 196 yards for Kansas State (3-4, 2-2 Big 12).

Josh Hoover was 26-of-47 passing for 376 yards and three touchdowns for TCU (4-2, 1-2 Big 12).

“We didn't do a very good job of going out and playing well enough to win,” TCU coach Sonny Dykes said. “It was just kind of a disaster in so many ways.”

K-State took a two-score lead early in the third quarter with its second defensive touchdown of the game. Purnell picked off Hoover and raced 25 yards for the score.

“It kind of feels like high school days all over again with the ball in my hand,” Purnell said. “But that was all set up by the rest of the guys around me.”

Johnson then found Garrett Oakley for his second touchdown, this time from 17 yards out, to give the Wildcats a 28-7 lead with 3:57 left in the third quarter. With that touchdown, Oakley became the all-time leader in touchdown catches among K-State tight ends.

“Avery made really nice throws today,” Oakley said. “I thought he had a really good game, so I’m happy for him as well.

"If you would have told me that (I would be the career leader in touchdowns) when I first got here, I don’t think I’d ever believe you. But this is a process organization, just coming to work every day. I put my head down, going to work is kind of what brought me to this moment.”

TCU used a seven-play, 75-yard drive in just 1:51 to draw within 28-14 late in the fourth quarter. Hoover found Chase Curtis on a 2-yard touchdown on fourth down.

But Johnson found Jarend Bradley for a 12-yard touchdown to give K-State a 35-14 lead.

“I didn’t see us as an underdog going into today’s game, and I don’t see us as a 3-4 team now,” Johnson said. “We just had an unfortunate turn of events early in the year. We didn’t play as well as we wanted to play. Last week at Baylor, things don’t go our way. And you might have one or two of those a year where things don’t go your way, but you win and play well in the other ones to make up for it.”

Hoover connected with Eric McAlister for an 85-yard touchdown, but Purnell's second interception in TCU territory set up a Luis Rodriguez field goal.

TCU got on the scoreboard with a 12-play, 93-yard drive late in the first half. Jeremy Payne went around the left end for a 1-yard touchdown.

Kansas State answered with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Oakley, capping a six-play, 75-yard drive to even the score.

On TCU's second play of the ensuing possession, Hoover's pass to Ed Small was ruled a backward pass. It was recovered by Wesley Fair at the TCU 15-yard line. Fair ran it in for a touchdown, giving K-State a 14-7 lead at the half.

🏈 Avery Johnson's three TD passes and two defensive scores lift K-State over TCU 41-28

DODGE CITY, Kan. — No. 1 Hutchinson (5-0, 1-0) scored in all three phases of the game in a road victory at Dodge City (1-5, 1-2).

Kordell Gouldsby caught a touchdown pass and returned a kickoff for a touchdown. He had another score taken away on a Dragon penalty.

Gouldsby finished the day with three catches for 39 yards and a touchdown. He also scored on an 84-yard kick return after a Blue Dragon safety.

The Dragons jumped out to a 14-0 lead before a flea flicker went awry. Christian Johnson had his pass intercepted and Dodge City turned it into three points.

Hutchinson secured the first 14 points on Gouldsby's 27-yard touchdown catch from Johnson. The Dragons scored again after a Da'Mun Allen interception led to a Rashaud Hurt 20-yard receiving touchdown.

After an Adam Pineiro 27-yard field goal to begin the second quarter, the score sat at 14-3 until midway through the third quarter.

Darius Wiley got the scoring going again when he sacked Ed Merriweather III in the end zone.

Gouldsby took the ensuing kickoff 84 yards to the house.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Derrick Salley Jr. got on the board with a 10-yard receiving touchdown. Salley Jr. finished the day with seven receptions for 135 yards and the score. He leads the nation with nine receiving touchdowns.

Lekedrin Harvey broke through the middle of the Conquistador defense for a 21-yard run to make the score 37-3.

The Dragon defense finished off the scoring with a 33-yard scoop-and-score by Brice Summerall.

Allen finished the day with five tackles and two interceptions.

Johnson threw three touchdowns and had two interceptions on 16-for-29 throwing for 230 yards. Johnson led the rushing attack with 70 yards.

The Dragon offense saw its red zone streak come to an end. The Dragons entered the game a perfect 13-of-13 but only scored twice on four chances Saturday.

Hutchinson returns to Gowans Stadium Oct. 18 for a 1 p.m. kickoff against Independence. It will be Hutchinson's first home game since Sept. 13.

Qualifier 2 also stayed close to home, with Chris Pitts of Hutchinson driving the 01X car to first place after 12 fast laps. Braden Stoner of Wichita claimed second, followed by Mike Petersilie of Hoisington in third. Rounding out the top five were Tanner Thiel and Clint Smith, both representing Hutchinson.

Fans were treated to high-speed drama in the 360 Winged Sprint feature. After topping the dash, Blake Hahn of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, started strong but ultimately settled for second as Whit Gastineau from Moore, Oklahoma, surged to victory in the 20-lap Feature. Sam Hafertepe Jr. of Sunnyvale, Texas, completed the podium with a solid third-place run.

Matt Covington (Glenpool, OK) and Austyn Gossel (Fort Collins, CO) rounded out the top five, followed closely by Jason Martin of Liberal, Kansas. Kansas racer Zach Blurton from Quinter finished seventh, while Brady Baker of Alexander, Arkansas, placed eighth.

The event brought together top-tier regional talent and showcased Hutchinson’s thriving racing scene. Local fans packed the grandstands to cheer on hometown favorites like the Reimer brothers and Chris Pitts, all of whom delivered standout performances on their home track.

Salt City Racing continues tonight as pits open at noon, gates at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at 6:30, and the green flag drops at 7 p.m.

Hutchinson Racers shine Friday night at Kansas State Fairgrounds

HUTCHINSON, Kan.-The Hutchinson Salthawks put together a complete performance Friday night at Gowans Stadium, rolling past the Haysville-Campus Colts 42-0 in an AVCTL Division I matchup.

Hutchinson quarterback Robert Hunter led the offensive charge, throwing for 147 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 156 yards on just 10 carries — including a highlight 62-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter.

The Salthawks (4-2) opened the scoring on a 20-yard touchdown run by Larry Jeramiah. Hunter then found Lamar Govain in the deep corner of the end zone late in the first quarter, as Govain made a spectacular one-handed grab to put Hutch up 14-0. Govain added his second touchdown of the night on a 17-yard strike from Hunter in the fourth quarter, giving him six touchdown receptions on the season.

Jeramiah also caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Hunter before halftime to make it 21-0 at the break. Hunter’s long touchdown run in the third quarter and a blocked punt recovery by Max Harris in the end zone with 9:10 remaining capped the scoring.

The Hutchinson defense was equally dominant, holding Campus (0-6) to just 58 total yards and forcing two interceptions. Special teams and defense combined for the Salthawks’ final score when Harris broke through for the punt block and recovered it himself for a touchdown.

Hutchinson totaled 397 yards of offense on 53 plays, including 250 rushing yards on 32 carries.

The Salthawks will travel to Newton next Friday for their final regular-season road game, while Campus heads to Salina South in a battle of winless teams.

Both Buhler and McPherson turned in dominant performances at their respective regional tournaments Friday to qualify multiple entries for state. Hesston and Pratt also earned individual berths, continuing a strong season for area programs.

At the Buhler regional, hosted at the Buck Balzer Tennis Complex, Wichita Collegiate swept the singles and doubles titles, but Buhler High School placed second as a team and advanced three entries to state.
Sophomore Sofia Spies finished runner-up in singles, falling only to Collegiate’s freshman standout Hitha Ganganala (22-1). Spies improved to 24-6 on the year and will make her second straight trip to state. Freshman teammate Gabriella Gillespie claimed sixth place, securing her first state berth.
In doubles, seniors Emily Allen and Kylee Bradshaw placed third (22-12), advancing after a strong run that included wins in the consolation bracket.

🎾 Buhler, McPherson lead area qualifiers for 4A state tennis

The Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team completed its suspended game with Dodge City Friday night, scoring five more goals after the game was resumed at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.

Originally started on September 17 and suspended by lightning, the Blue Dragons completed an 8-1 Jayhawk Conference victory over the Conquistadors.

The Blue Dragons improved to 8-2-2 overall and 4-2-2 (14 points) in the Jayhawk Conference. Dodge City is 6-5 overall and 4-5 in the KJCCC. The Blue Dragons and Conquistadors will play again at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City.

The Blue Dragons out-shot Dodge City 23-4.

The Dragons had a 3-1 lead at the point of suspension on September 17. Dodge City scored the first goal, but Tamaki scored two goals and Puccinelli had the third.

Three minutes into the resumption of the first half, Tamaki played a perfect through ball to Smith, who worked to the left side of the goal and scored from 15 yards out for a 5-1 lead with 7:50 remaining in the half.

Just one minute into the second half, Swearingen intercepted a deflected Dodge City pass then launched a high-arching shot over the head over the Dodge City keeper for a 5-1 lead.

The Dragons made it 7-1 in the 67th minute when Pokrandt's free kick was ripped into the goal from 25 yards out on a blistering shot by Dowling-Perdomo.

One minute, 3 seconds later, Dowling-Perdomo fed Van Fleet, who scored for an 8-1 lead.

Then in the 75th minute, Simpson lobbed a free kick from the left side into the upper right corner of the goal for an 8-1 Blue Dragon lead.

The Dragons are now 33-1 all-time against Dodge City with 32 consecutive victories.

The Hutchinson Community College football team completes its 42-day road trip on Saturday in Western Kansas against the Dodge City Conquistadors.

The No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons (4-0) are the last Jayhawk Conference team to play a KJCCC game this season. Kickoff with the Conquistadors (1-4, 1-1 KJCCC) is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 12:30 p.m. with Sean Boston (PBP) and Daren Dunn (color) calling the action. The game will be streamed live only on ConqTV.

Since the Blue Dragons last played at home on September 13, they have played three-straight road games and had their first bye week of the season. Over that time, the Dragons have accumulated 2,246 miles traveled. When you toss in the road trip to New Mexico Military on September 6, the Dragons will have traveled 3,362 miles before playing their second home game next Saturday against Independence.

The Blue Dragons extended their winning streak to eight games last Saturday with a 50-0 victory at Ellsworth.

Hutchinson's defense was impressive, holding Ellsworth to a negative-63 yards rushing and a negative-6 yards total offenses. The Blue Dragons had a season-high nine quarterback sacks and a season-high-tying 16 tackles for loss against the Panthers. The Dragons amassed 397 total yards against Ellsworth.

The Conquistadors lost to No. 11 Iowa Central 49-0. The Conquistadors were out-gained 486-217 and had two turnovers. The Blue Dragons extended their winning streak against Dodge City last season to eight games after a 42-0 victory over the Conquistadors at Gowans Stadium.

Hutchinson outgained Dodge City 399-35. The Blue Dragons scored six first-half touchdowns.

Receiver Tre Brown caught two touchdown passes and had six overall receptions for 114 yards. Samari Collier threw for 136 yards and two scores and Waymond Jordan Jr. rushed for 75 yards and one touchdown.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City Royals announced today that&nbsp;Mike Jirschele is retiring following a 38-year career with the Royals organization. Jirsch has served in many roles in the organization, first as a player in Kansas City’s minor league system from 1988-89.

He was selected by Texas in the 5th round of the 1977 Draft and spent the first 10 years of his playing career in the Rangers organization. In total, he spent 48 years in professional baseball, including 12 as a player and 36 as a coach.

“People who know me know I don’t love the attention that comes from an announcement like this,” Jirschele said. “All I’ve wanted is to do my job. I’m grateful for a career in baseball, all these years with the Royals, and the friendships that have come along the way. I hope the people I’ve worked with think I’ve done my job, worked hard for them, and helped.”

“It’s been an absolute honor to work alongside of Jirsch,” said&nbsp;J.J. Picollo, Royals Executive VP &amp; General Manager. “He’s done just about everything in player development and was obviously a big part of our World Series championship. And he did all of it with class and dignity. Very few people can connect with players the way he has throughout his career. He’s truly a Royals legend and we will miss him dearly.”

His career featured a World Series championship while serving as Kansas City’s Third Base Coach in 2015 and 20 seasons as a minor league Manager, including 10 playoff seasons and five league championships. Jirsch was named Manager of the Year three times, including in the Gulf Coast League in 1992, the Carolina League in 1994 and International League in 2024.

Seventeen of his 20 seasons as Manager came with Triple-A Omaha, where he won 1,214 of 2,454 games and led the Storm Chasers to three league titles. He is Omaha’s all-time wins leader and has managed 30% of the 57 seasons that Omaha has been a Royals affiliate.

According to Omaha Storm Chasers Broadcast and Media Relations Manager,&nbsp;Nicholas Badders, 95 players were promoted from Omaha to Kansas City under Jirsch’s managerial tenure, including&nbsp;Joe Randa,&nbsp;Zack Greinke,&nbsp;Eric Hosmer,&nbsp;Danny Duffy,&nbsp;Mike Moustakas&nbsp;and&nbsp;Yordano Ventura, among many others.

Jirsch’s coaching career began in 1990 as the Hitting Coach of Kansas City’s Class-A Appleton affiliate, where he spent two seasons. He managed Royals affiliates in the Gulf Coast League (1992), Rockford (1993), Wilmington (1994) and Omaha (1995-97), before serving as the organization’s Minor League Infield Coordinator for five seasons from 1998-2002.

He returned to Omaha as Manager in 2003, beginning an 11-year reign as the leader of Kansas City’s Triple-A affiliate. Jirsch served as Kansas City’s Third Base Coach on&nbsp;Ned Yost’s&nbsp;staff from 2014-19 and won a World Series in 2015.

Jirsch served as a Special Assistant to the General Manager in 2020, but returned to the dugout as a Bench Coach for Quad Cities in 2021 and Northwest Arkansas in 2022. He began his third stint as Omaha’s Manager in 2023, a role he held through this season.

The Hutchinson Community College men's golf team dropped two spots this week in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek NJCAA Division I Rankings released on Friday.
Both Odessa and Indian Hills jumped past the Blue Dragons after performances at the Grier Jones Shocker Classic last weekend at Sand Creek Station.
The Blue Dragons finished tied for 12th at WSU. No. 1 Midland, No. 2 Odessa and No. 4 Indian Hills all finished higher than the Blue Dragons at the Shocker Invitational.
The Blue Dragons have been ranked No. 2, No. 3 and now No. 5 in the national rankings this season.
Garden City jumped into the Top 10 this week at No. 8. Central District rival Iowa Western is receiving votes this week.
The Blue Dragons have two more fall tournaments this season. They will be at the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational hosted by West Texas A&amp;M on Monday and Tuesday at the Amarillo Country Club in Amarillo, Texas. The Dragons then play again at Sand Creek Station on October 30 and 31 for the NJCAA National Preview.

 </figure><div>The Big 12 Conference has revealed the preseason awards and coaches&rsquo; poll for the 2025-26 women&rsquo;s basketball season. League head coaches voted on the honors and were not allowed to vote for their own team. The individual preseason awards were headlined by Iowa State&rsquo;s Audi Crooks (Player), TCU&rsquo;s Olivia Miles (Newcomer) and Cincinnati&rsquo;s Dee Alexander (Freshman). Miles and Crooks both represented Team USA at the FIBA AmeriCup this summer, helping capture the gold medal, while Alexander joins Cincinnati as the highest-ranked recruit in program history. TCU was selected as the favorite in the Conference&rsquo;s preseason coaches&rsquo; poll for the first time in program history. The Horned Frogs swept the regular season and postseason Big 12 titles during the 2024-25 campaign and advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history. Crooks is the fourth Cyclone to be named the league&rsquo;s Preseason Player of the Year and the first since Ashley Joens in 2022. The center from Algona, Iowa started all 35 contests as a sophomore and set the ISU single-season records for scoring (820) and made field goals (329) while leading the Big 12 with 23.4 points and shooting over 60 percent from the floor. Crooks finished the year as an AP and USBWA Third Team All-American while earning Unanimous First Team All-Big 12 honors. Miles is TCU&rsquo;s second consecutive Preseason Newcomer of the Year, following 2025 Big 12 Player of the Year Hailey Van Lith, who garnered the honor a season ago. The graduate student from Notre Dame joins the Horned Frogs as a three-time All-American and a three-time First Team All-ACC selection. The Phillipsburg, New Jersey native was projected as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA draft before transferring to TCU. She enters the year as the active Division I leader in career assists per game (6.5), total assists (654) and triple-doubles (6). Alexander is Cincinnati&rsquo;s first Big 12 individual preseason award honoree. The five-star guard from Cincinnati finished at No. 11 in the final ESPNW rankings and was ranked as the No. 1 player in Ohio by Prep Hoops. Alexander is the first Bearcat signee to be named a McDonald&rsquo;s All-American and was also recognized as Ohio&rsquo;s Gatorade Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons. The Preseason All-Big 12 Team consists of 10 players, with Baylor and Iowa State each having two selections, while BYU, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma State, TCU and West Virginia each have one. For the first time in league history, a preseason media poll will be conducted. The results will be released the week of Oct. 27. A full preview of the 2025-26 Big 12 Women&rsquo;s Basketball season will take place as the league returns to Kansas City&rsquo;s T-Mobile Center for Big 12 Women&rsquo;s Basketball Media Day presented by New Era on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
