Backed by two strong double-doubles in a pair of neutral court victories last week, Hutchinson Community College freshman outside hitter Giovanna Monteiro was named the KJCCC Division I Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Monteiro, a 6-foot freshman pin hitter from Uberlandia, Brazil, hit .435 in two victories last Thursday to lead the Blue Dragon to a 3-1 win over Eastern Wyoming and a 3-0 win over Trinidad State in the Victory Electric Classic in Dodge City.
Monteiro averaged 4.71 kills per set and hit .435 on 62 attacks over seven sets played. She also had 4.57 digs per set with two aces serves and four total blocks.
Against Trinidad State in a sweep, Monteiro hit a season-high .567 with 18 kills on 30 attacks. She had 16 digs in each match.Monteiro is the first Blue Dragon player to earn conference player of the week honors this season.
The Blue Dragons open three days of action beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday against No. 13 Indian Hills in the Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic at the Sports Arena.
