Lucy Melvin White, was born May 16, 1934 to Ruben Murray and Mary Elizabeth (Long) Murray in Pratt, Kansas. She passed away in Hutchinson, Kansas, July 14, 2023.

Lucy, or Mel, as she preferred, was preceded in death by her parents, Ruben and Mary, brothers, Bud Murray, James Murray, and Virgil Murray, her sister, Mary Ann Rojas, husband, Leslie G White, daughter, Cindy Dick, and son, Gordon Lee White.

Mel is survived by her daughter Becky (Mike) White, and son, James (Shelly) White, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.

Mel was a voracious reader and could always be found with her nose in a book. She also enjoyed crochet, needle point, and crossword puzzles.&nbsp;

Lucy Mel White was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She will remain in our hearts forever.&nbsp;

A funeral service will take place Thursday, July 20th at 1:30 p.m., Old Mission Heritage Funeral Home, 528 N Main St, Hutchinson, KS, officiated by Minister Wayne DeWindt of Eastwood Church of Christ.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Karen Renee Hahn, 45, left this world and entered the gates of heaven, perfect and free, on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS.

Karen was born in Newton, KS to Allen G and Marcia Ann (Weyer) Hahn on March 1, 1978, joining her big sister Janelle Ann. In 1983, Janelle and Karen were joined by brother, Scott Allen. On her 3rd birthday, Karen received a surprise birthday gift of a cousin, Darby (Weyer) Simpson. 3 more cousins followed, Pete Weyer, Lucas Weyer, and Kevin Hahn. Completing Karen’s family, Scott married Alicia in 2009.

A few short minutes after birth, the doctor told Allen &amp; Marcia that their daughter had spina bifida. She was soon taken to pediatric intensive care at Wesley in Wichita. The next day, Karen had the first of what would total 8 major surgeries over 4½ months time. The care she received enabled her to live a happy life, despite her challenges, and her huge smiles and friendly, outgoing personality enabled her to collect new friends everywhere she went!

Karen grew up in Hesston where she was a member of the Hesston United Methodist Church, Hesston 4-H Club, and Girl Scouts, as well as participating in Special Olympics for several years. She attended school as a student of Harvey County Special Ed in Newton and Hesston, graduating from Hesston High School in 1998.

Karen comes from a K-State family, and she enjoyed supporting the Wildcats every chance she got! She looked forward to “sister night” with Janelle, phone calls from Scott, postcards from Alicia, and visits with everyone she knew! She was always ready for a game of Uno, Sorry, or solitaire, and was famous as the Yahtzee Queen, with her record being 3 Yahtzees in a single game!

With Allen &amp; Marcia being lifelong square dancers and Allen a caller, Karen attended countless square dances with them in the state of Kansas and beyond. Karen’s smile added a spark to every dance she attended, and people especially were warmed by her enjoyment of winning the half pot drawings, adding Half Pot Queen to her list of royal titles. Karen always took special joy in using her winnings to bring a bucket of ice cream to the refreshment table at subsequent dances.

Karen had previously signed on her ID card with the state of Kansas that she was willing to be an organ donor. As a result, her kidneys are already saving the lives of two people. Her legacy of love and giving continues on.

To all those involved in Karen’s life through education, club memberships, medical care, etc, we appreciate and thank you for all you did for Karen! She loved you not just for what you gave her, but as friends!

In addition to her parents, siblings, and cousins, Karen is survived by her uncles and aunts, Mark &amp; Judy Hahn and Ed &amp; Kathy Weyer. She was preceded in death by grandparents, Lewis &amp; Arline Hahn and Leonard &amp; Merle Weyer.

Visitation with the family will be 5-8 pm, Sunday, July 16, at Hesston United Methodist Church. A service celebrating Karen’s life will be at 4 pm, Monday, July 17, at the church, followed by a fellowship time. A burial service will be at 3 pm, Tuesday, July 18, at Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, 6 miles east and 3 miles north from the Oketo, KS stop sign.

Memorials may be left in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home for Hesston United Methodist Church, Midwest Transplant Network, or Dyck Arboretum of the Plains to construct a memorial in Karen’s honor.

Greg Proffitt, 65, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2023 at his home in Haven. &nbsp;He was born August 21, 1957, in Inglewood, CA, to Ralph and Rocena (Barb) Proffitt.&nbsp;

Greg attended Lennox High School in Inglewood, CA. &nbsp;He moved to Kansas in 1980 and worked in construction with his father and uncle, Gene Barb. &nbsp;

Greg loved music, especially playing the drums, Harley Davidson motorcycles, and spending time with his family and friends. &nbsp;He was known to all for having a kind heart and always trying to lend a hand.&nbsp;

Greg is survived by: his brother, Roger Proffitt; closest friend, Cheryl Proffitt; sons, Jeremy (Nicole) Moorman of Granville, IL, and Joshua (Lisa) Proffitt of Haven; daughters, Stephanie (Joel) Turner and ReAnna (Ben) Wolf, both of Wichita, KS; grandchildren, Jared (Blair) Moorman, Kaegan Moorman, Victoria Moorman, Cole Proffitt, Connor Proffitt, Ethan Wolf, and Mattelyn Turner; and several great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Dane Moorman.

Hannah had a heart for helping others, volunteering, and bottomless love for her family and friends. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Eldon Ray Alexander, 90, of Galva, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at his home, surrounded by family.

Eldon was born in Galva, Kansas on February 13, 1933, the son of John Clarence and Edith Viola Christine (Johnson) Alexander.

Eldon attended North Diamond Grade School and graduated from Galva High School in 1951.

He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve during the Korean War.

Eldon's first job off the farm was working construction as a brick tender. He then worked at Mountain Iron Supply, McPherson until being hired by NCRA, moving through the ranks there and retiring as safety supervisor in 1995.

Eldon enjoyed all facets of life, including fishing, hunting, camping, and traveling. If Eldon wasn't helping in the harvest field or working with the cattle, he could be found enjoying the masterpiece of a sunset while on his sailboat at the lake. He was a talented musician, playing the accordion, mandolin, piano and organ. He always had a tune to whistle or a song to sing. Woodcarving was a hobby that kept him busy when he wasn't doing carpentry jobs for others, or building the home where he and Jody raised their family and currently reside. Eldon was delighted to build a toybox for each of their great-grandchildren. Whether bouncing a baby on his knee, singing "Pony Boy", or scaring an unsuspecting grandchild with his "pet mongoose", his infectious laughter would brighten everyone's day. Galva residents looked forward to seeing Eldon riding his bike around town, always willing to stop for a visit. Dancing on Wednesday nights and enjoying a Waltz with Jody, the love of his life, brought him much joy. Eldon was a Boy Scout leader and helped Jody with Girl Scouts. He was an EMT, served on the Galva City Council for many years, and helped start and serve with the Galva Fire Department for most of his life. He was devoted to his church and served on various committees, was the worship leader, a Sunday school teacher and was involved with Bible studies. He enjoyed making homemade ice cream for all the family's birthday parties, and sourdough pancakes were a staple for each family campout and Saturday morning church breakfasts. Eldon didn't know a stranger; family and friends felt blessed to be a part of his life.

Eldon was united in marriage to Anita Jo "Jody " Grant on February 10, 1952 in Galva, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in Galva. This union was blessed with the birth of three children, Daril, Darla and Diane.

He is survived by his wife, Jody; son, Daril (Kelly) Alexander of rural Galva, Kansas; daughter, Darla (Marvin) Westbrook of rural Canton, Kansas; son-in-law, Rick Remsberg of Leon, Kansas; 11 grandchildren and 31 great- grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.

Eldon was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Diane Remsberg; brother, Robert Alexander; sisters, Donna Clark and Norma Decker; and great-granddaughter, Karsyn Alvord.

Visitation will be held 6 pm to 8 pm on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at Galva Community Church in Galva, Kansas.

Coralou "Corky" Cooprider, 90, died July 11, 2023, at Showalter Villa, Hesston. She was born August 12, 1932, to William and Rosella Kornelson in Greensburg, KS. She graduated from Inman High School in 1950 attended Hutchinson Community College later in life. In 1952 she married Fred M. Cooprider and to this union was born two sons, Kevin Bradly and Coyne William.

After being a military wife for 4 years, the family moved to Lyons, KS, where Coralou was a member of the Lyons Christian Church. There she served as Sunday School teacher, Diaconate, choir member, and member of C.W.F., and various committees. In the community, she was involved in Meals on Wheels, Rice County Arts Council, Rice County Healthcare Foundation, Rice County Community Foundation, Boy Scouts, Lyons Chamber of Commerce, and served as Conservator for the District Court. She worked at the Lyons Federal Savings Bank and for 19 years at the Kansas State Fair.

Most recently she was living in Hesston and attended the Hesston Mennonite Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband Fred, son Kevin, siblings, Bob, Karen, and Zella, and her parents.

She is survived by her son, Coyne (Jodi) Cooprider, Haven; 4 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild; a brother, Ralph Kornelson, TX; and a sister-in-law, Lisa Kornelson, Colorado.

Visitation will be held 5-7PM Friday July 14, 2023, at Inman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, July 15, 2023, at the funeral home. Coralou "Corky" Cooprider |1932-2023|

Marvin Daniel Huxman, 90, passed away on July 7, 2023.&nbsp; Marvin was born July 24, 1932 to Henry Earl and Inez Lucille (Decker) Huxman of rural Moundridge, Kansas.&nbsp; The family moved to rural Walton, Kansas where they farmed for many years.&nbsp; Marvin’s mother died in a tragic traffic accident in 1940.&nbsp; His father married Martha Fast, who raised the four children and loved them dearly.&nbsp; Marvin always thought he was Martha’s favorite.&nbsp; Marvin graduated from Walton High School in 1950.&nbsp; He served in the U.S. Army from January 1953 until January 1955 when he was honorably discharged from service.&nbsp; Marvin worked for the U. S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1989.&nbsp; In 1970 Marvin started a small engine repair business named Ping Pang Repair in Newton, Kansas.&nbsp; Ping Pang Repair was Marvin’s side job and it served the community for several decades.

Second only to his love of God was Marvin’s love of family and country.&nbsp; Marvin faithfully gave of himself to his church as a Sunday School teacher, leadership team member, road bus driver, and choir member.&nbsp; He enjoyed singing first tenor in a men’s quartet and served on a variety of councils and committees.&nbsp; He modeled a strong work ethic for his children and taught them the value of honest work.&nbsp; He honored the American flag and he was proud of the goodness and opportunity that abound in this great country.

Marvin married Ruth Ann Neilson-Poe of Tulsa, Oklahoma in October 1957.&nbsp; Together, Marvin and Ruth Ann raised five children and celebrated 61 years of marriage before Ruth Ann passed away.

Marvin’s hobbies included gardening, woodworking, table games, and reading.&nbsp; He also had a very keen sense of humor.&nbsp; He always loved a good joke and his pranks left many of his victims laughing after they recovered from their initial shock.

Marvin is preceded in death by his father, both of his mothers, his wife Ruth Ann, his brother Wiley Huxman, sister Joan Murray, sister Delia Schroeder, and great granddaughter Halana Barrone.

Marvin is survived by his children: Billie (Wayne) Weeks of Pawnee, OK; Wayne (Julie) Huxman of Halstead, KS; Myron (Sandy) Huxman of Wichita, KS; Sally (Darryl) Thiesen of Goessel, KS; and Paul Huxman of Spring Hill, KS.&nbsp; He is also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Sunday July 23, 2023 from 1:00pm-5:00pm at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, Kansas.&nbsp; A funeral service will be held Monday July 24, 2023 at 10:30am at Wichita First Church of the Nazarene in Wichita, Kansas.

 </figure>Marvin Daniel Huxman, 90, passed away on July 7, 2023.&nbsp; Marvin was born July 24, 1932 to Henry Earl and Inez Lucille (Decker) Huxman of rural Moundridge, Kansas.&nbsp; The family moved to rural Walton, Kansas where they farmed for many years.&nbsp; Marvin’s mother died in a tragic traffic accident in 1940.&nbsp; His father married Martha Fast, who raised the four children and loved them dearly.&nbsp; Marvin always thought he was Martha’s favorite.&nbsp; Marvin graduated from Walton High School in 1950.&nbsp; He served in the U.S. Army from January 1953 until January 1955 when he was honorably discharged from service.&nbsp; Marvin worked for the U. S. Barbara Lou Jellison, 88, died July 7, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi-St. Francis, Wichita. &nbsp;She was born August 6, 1934, near Lone Elm, KS, to Harold and Esther (Thompson) Nichols. &nbsp;

Barbara graduated from Welda High School in 1951. &nbsp;She married Robert “Bob” Jellison March 30, 1950, at her parents’ home in Welda. &nbsp;

Barbara retired from the Lyons Medical Center in 1995. &nbsp; She was a member of First Christian Church, Lyons, where she served as a deacon, elder, and sang in the church choir. In addition, Barbara was a 22-year charter member of Sweet Adelines, Coronado Country Chapter of Lyons.

Barbara is survived by: &nbsp;her husband of over 73 years, Bob; daughter, Phyllis Webb of Dothan, AL; sons, Donald Jellison (fiancée, Nelda Slider) of Skiatook, OK and Dale Jellison (Tomi) of Hutchinson; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Frank Mersmann of Osage City.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Margie Mersmann.

Graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 21, 2023, at Welda Cemetery, Welda, KS. &nbsp;Friends may sign her book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

In loving memory of Reba F. Lentz. Reba passed peacefully in her home on July 5, 2023 in Aurora, Missouri. She was born to Tom E. and Dollie Ball on January 23, 1935 in Mapleton, Ks. In her mid 20's she met Raymond Lentz while working in Wichita, Ks. They soon married and started a family and serving the Lord together.

They moved to Newton, Ks in the early 70's. Reba opened an in home daycare which she did for over 30 years. When she and her husband retired they moved to Aurora, Mo. She accepted the Lord as her Savior in her early 20's. Her desire was to have her family and all those around her to know the Lord.

Reba was preceded in death by her three sisters and two brothers. Along with her husband and son, Teddy Dean.

Survived by her children, Tom Lentz, Trinidad Lentz, Gail &amp; Dennis McDowell, Tim Lentz, Terry &amp; Nancy Lentz, Tony Lentz and Amor Nicilla.

Along with 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 3 more on the way.

She is known for her love of family and love &amp; faith in God.

There will be a memorial service held at her church, Aurora Baptist Temple in Aurora, Mo. on July 15, 2023 at 11:00am

Barbara E. Wallace, 80, of McPherson, KS, passed away on Friday, July 7, 2023, at her vacation home in Dubois, WY.&nbsp;

Barbara was born on February 14, 1943, at the Menorah Hospital in Kansas City, MO, the daughter of James and Ruth (Gordon) Benson.&nbsp; She spent her earlier years in Russellville, MO, attending school and enjoying summers with her grandparents, aunts, and uncles.&nbsp; She either attended the &nbsp;Church of Christ there in Russellville or in Kansas City, KS.&nbsp; Following graduation from Wyandotte High School (Kansas City, KS) in 1961, she began working as a secretary for a local business.

On July 26, 1968, Barbara married Larry Roland Wallace in Kansas City, MO.&nbsp; Larry had a daughter, Kimberly, and Barbara welcomed her with open arms.&nbsp; At this time, Larry was the general manager for Gene Cable Chevrolet.&nbsp; On March 3, 1974, Larry and Barbara were blessed with the birth of their son, Chris.&nbsp; The family lived in the Kansas City area until April 1978, when they moved to McPherson, KS and purchased Turner Chevrolet, which would later become Wallace Chevrolet-Oldsmobile, Inc.&nbsp;

Larry and Barbara enjoyed traveling together.&nbsp; They visited many places in the United States including Alaska and Hawaii.&nbsp; They also traveled to Canada, Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean.&nbsp; They also made many trips to Kansas City, Nevada, Missouri, and Colorado Springs to visit family.&nbsp;

Barbara enjoyed fishing with Larry, working puzzles, and bird watching, having marked many pages in her bird book.&nbsp; Barbara and Larry purchased their vacation home in Dubois, WY, and soon, the mountains became her favorite place to be.&nbsp; She had numerous hummingbird feeders out and enjoyed watching deer in their yard.

Her pride and joy were her six grandchildren, Megan, Eric, Tiffany, Trisha, Alayna, and Hayden.&nbsp; She loved spending time with them and attending their many activities.&nbsp; She even had a separate grandchildren calendar just to record all their activities, never wanting to miss an event.&nbsp; She enjoyed playing games with them. Some of the favorite games were Pitch, Stinko, and Solitaire.&nbsp; As the grandchildren got older, she would wait by the phone for their calls.

Barbara especially enjoyed Christmas eve, breaking out the Christmas carol books and singing with the family.&nbsp; Watching the grandchildren perform and open presents was a special highlight of hers.&nbsp; Her family would insist on Thanksgiving and Christmas be at her house every year as she was known for her “silver trays” full of various sides to go with the turkey and ham.

Attending her P.E.O. Chapter HI meetings, swimming with the neighbors, attending McPherson Opera House shows, and getting her hair done were some of her other favorites.&nbsp; A memorable evening at the McPherson Opera House was meeting and visiting with Larry Gatlin and The Gatlin Brothers.&nbsp; She even had her picture taken with them.

Barbara loved God and was a member of McPherson Church of Christ.&nbsp;

Survivors include: children, Kimberly (Evan) McHugh of Knoxville, TN and Chris (Catrina) Wallace of Moundridge, KS; and six grandchildren, Megan McHugh of the Netherlands, Eric McHugh of Knoxville, TN, Tiffany McChesney of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Trisha McHugh of Indianapolis, IN, Alayna Wallace of Kansas City, MO, and Hayden Wallace of Moundridge, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings, Linda Maurer and Gordon Benson.

Ann Laverne Farrier, 97, of McPherson, KS and formerly of Lawrence, KS, peacefully passed away on Monday, July 10, 2023, surrounded by family at McPherson Hospital

Laverne was born on August 15, 1925, in Shidler, OK, the daughter of Frank and Mary Lee (Kingsolver) Phillips.&nbsp; She graduated high school in Neosho, MO.&nbsp; On January 12, 1946, Laverne was united in marriage to Fred Farrier in Baxter Springs, KS.&nbsp; This union was blessed with three children, Peggy, Kathleen, and Daniel. Laverne and Fred were married for 67 years before his passing on August 29, 2013.

Laverne was a homemaker, worked for Hallmark Cards, and was an operator for Bell Telephone.&nbsp;

She was a member of McPherson church of Christ and former member of the Southside church of Christ in Lawrence, KS.&nbsp; She belonged to the Hallmark Club.&nbsp;

Survivors include: three children, Peggy Lynn (Michael) Bassham of Sulfur Springs, TX, Kathleen (Dr. Gregory) Thomas of McPherson, KS, and Daniel (Marsha) Farrier of Georgetown, TX; eight grandchildren, Ann Kathleen (Jeff) Demuth, Stephanie (Richard) George, Susan (Brian) Heflin, Megan (Stephen) Eck, Dr. Reid (Kem) Thomas, Sarah Thomas, Shelley (Todd) Tindel, and Emily (Roy) McGhee; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Ann Laverne Farrier |1925-2023|

Roger Paul Hodgson, 80, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2023 at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson, KS.  He was born April 7, 1943, Lyons, KS to Paul C. and Bernice E. (Wolfe) Hodgson.

Roger attended Sterling High School and graduated in 1961.  On January 13, 1970, he married Charlotte Kay “Katie” McAnally and she passed away in 2015.  In 1964, Roger enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1968.  He worked for Dillon’s Warehouse in maintenance and retired after 32 years.

Lonnie Beryl Pruitt, 81, of Hutchinson, was carried from this life into the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, Friday, July 7, 2023, at his home, surrounded by family and friends that cared for and loved him dearly. He will be truly missed.&nbsp;

Lonnie’s favorite verse was John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” and his favorite song was, “I’m a Child of the King.”

Lonnie was born October 20, 1941, in Bartley, WV, to Fred and Ruby (Riffe) Pruett. He lived a full and happy life of almost 82 years.

Lonnie married the love of his life, Easter Lowery, on September 11, 1963, in Grundy, VA.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 33 years. Lonnie retired in Colorado Springs, CO, where he worked as Director of Food Services at the U.S. Olympic Training Center for 25 years, until he could no longer work due to health.

Lonnie was first and foremost, a Christian. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, people listened. Lonnie loved to laugh, loved to tell jokes, and any practical jokes to be played on someone - he was in on it. Lonnie loved his family, to hike and play ball, and to serve others. If there was a need he could meet, you could count on him doing it. Lonnie loved to go to church. He was the most consistent, even-tempered man you could ever meet. Lonnie never had anything negative to say and always saw the good in people. To sum it all up, he was the best husband, daddy, grandpa, great-grandpa, and friend a person could have.

Lonnie was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, Ray and Eldon; and son, Scott.

Doris (Diane) Cruit, 78, a retired speech language pathologist, passed away on July 11 at Newton Presbyterian Manor. Diane was born on November 2, 1944 in Dallas, Texas and was the oldest child of Harold and Dorothy (Colley) Roach.

Diane graduated from East High in Wichita, KS in 1963. After high school Diane went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Logopedics from Wichita State University and a master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. Diane was a devoted speech language pathologist for 30 years and worked for Butler County Special Education Cooperative, McPherson County Special Education Cooperative, the North Central Kansas Special Education Cooperative, the Cowley County Special Service Cooperative, and a few others. Diane loved her job and helping students accomplish their goals. She retired in 2006. 

On March 10, 1974, she married Mehl Cruit in Wichita, KS. Mehl and Diane shared almost 36 years together before his death in February of 2011. To this union were born daughters, Megan Elizabeth and Emily Denise. They loved being together, traveling, and spending time with their daughters and grandchildren.

Diane is survived by daughters Megan Zapata (Joaquin), Emily Dalke (Dustin); four grandchildren, Bryant Alan Dalke, Owen Daniel Dalke, Isabel Doratea Zapata, and Luca Melano Zapata; brother Michael Roach and sister Cathy Roach. She was preceded in death by her husband Mehl, her parents Harold and Dorothy Roach. 

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton Kansas on Thursday, July 13th. A graveside committal service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Wichita, KS on Friday, July 14th at 11:00 a.m.

Carolyn Jean Johnson went to be with the Lord on 7/1/2023, in O’Fallon, MO, at the age of 84. She was born on December 11, 1938, in McPherson, KS to William and Mabel Brauer. She was raised on the family farm and graduated from Inman High school in 1957. She married Evan Johnson on July 20, 1957, in McPherson, KS, celebrating 65 years of marriage. They had three children, Merlyn (Debby) of Walton, Gregory (Penney) of Walton, and LuAnn (Kip Connor) of St. Charles, MO. 9 grandchildren; Steven (Courtney), David, Miranda (David), Whitney, Tisha, Taylor (Addison), Kalin (Kylie), Sydney, and Hannah (Tommy). 12 great-grandchildren; Sierra, Rylie, Connor, Evan, Ethan, Willie, Eve, Eli, Vivien, Adalynn, Martin, Levi, Annie, and Lucy. 2 great, great grandchildren, Caroline and Wesley.

Carolyn was loved and cherished by her children, grandchildren, family and friends. She was loved for her kind and welcoming nature, always ensuring that she had a sweet treat to offer you during your visit. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren loved spending time with her doing puzzles, playing games and baking. They knew and felt how much she loved them. Her cinnamon roll recipe is cherished by many. She enjoyed attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and was very proud of their accomplishments. She ensured she never missed watching her beloved KC Chiefs.

She started her cooking career in 1970 at USD 373 Walton Grade School, as a school cook, transitioning to the USD 373 Food Service Director in 1982, retiring in 1999. She was loved at Walton and known for being the best cook ever by the kids and teachers! This meant she saw Evan and her children while at work, as Evan was the Walton Elementary School Principal. She made many friends during her time as Food Service Director, who have remained lifelong friends and all say she was the best boss!

She spent one summer running the Walton Whistlestop Restaurant, with a friend, and was known for her exceptional comfort food and pies. She also held the title of the “First Lady of Walton” during Evan’s tenure as Walton Mayor.

After retirement, she loved antiquing with Evan. Her collections included depression glass that she eventually shared with her granddaughters. She and Evan traveled with friends to many places, with Alaska and Lake Tahoe being their favorite trips.

She volunteered her entire life in many ways with her congregation at Newton Church of the Brethren, the Newton homeless shelter, Walton Community in multiple ways, Senior Service leader of Walton and in 4-H when her children were young.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Evan, daughter-in-law Debby Johnson, brother Richard Brauer, sister Nadine Willems, brothers-in-law Dennis Fry, Donald Johnson, and LaVerne Willems.

The celebration of life services will be held at Petersen’s Funeral Home on October 14th&nbsp;10 am with burial at Walton Cemetery immediately following. Visitation will be on October 13th, 5:30 – 7:30 pm.

Randy Gale Dacus, 66, of Canton, Kansas, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2023 at his residence. Randy was born in Farmington, New Mexico on April 11, 1957, a son of Lanny Gale and Merlene Almeda (Whitener) Dacus. Randy attended and graduated from Leon-Bluestem High School, Leon, Kansas. Randy took great pride in being a hard worker. He spent the majority of his working career at CHS Refinery, working first as a pipefitter rigger, and later was promoted to maintenance supervisor. Randy never knew a stranger. He would greet you with a unique one-liner and after a short conversation, he would give you a special “Randy nickname.” Randy loved rock crawling the Colorado mountains in his Toyota Landcruiser. He &nbsp;loved working on cars and teaching his children and grandchildren to drive and life hacks in general…probably at a far too young age. Ironically, he loved to go on elk hunting trips, but it was probably more to be with friends. Randy’s love for his animals, children, friends and family were what he lived for and will be remembered for most. Randy was united in marriage to Joni Seglem on July 25, 1983 in El Dorado, Kansas. The couple established their first home together in El Dorado and through their journey together, they raised four children, Brandi, Melissa, Kati, and Chris. Kelly Joe Minerd, 67, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 1, 2023. He was born in Ransom, Kansas on January 20, 1956 to Don E. and Margaret (Jarrell) Minerd. The family lived in Ness City, Kansas until he was 7, then moved to Wichita in 1963.&nbsp; He attended Valley Center schools, graduating in 1974. While in High School he was an outstanding basketball player and held the high scoring record for 30 years.

He worked for the Wichita Public School District 259 for 31 years before retiring. He was the Building Maintenance Supervisor at East High School.&nbsp; He was an animal lover, enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. His greatest love was his family and his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Don and Margaret, his brothers Michael Minerd and Kevin Minerd.

Kelly is survived by his son Cole, daughter Lindsey, sister Kathy Mertins, brother Patrick, 9 grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 14th at Baker Funeral Home, 100 S. Cedar, Valley Center, Kansas. Memorials may be designated in Kelly's memory to the&nbsp; Union Rescue Mission, 2800 N. Hillside, Wichita, Ks 67219-4702.

Carl C. Stelter, 95, of Haven, Kansas, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2023 at Legends of Hutchinson. He was born November 15, 1927 in Haven, the son of Carl W. and Pauline (Dierks) Stelter.

Carl graduated from Haven High School with the class of 1946 and was drafted and served in the United States Army from 1946-1948. He later served from 1950-1953, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Carl served during WWII and the Korean War.

He was united in marriage to Lila Jean Dickerson on January 1, 1952 in Huntsville, Arkansas. She preceded him in death on May 3, 2021.

Carl owned and operated Stelter Standard Service and later worked for the Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Co.

He was a member of the Haven United Methodist Church. Carl was also a member of the Haven American Legion Post, and was very active at the Haven Golf Course, often found planting trees and mowing.

Carl is survived by his daughters, Carla (Monte) Long of South Hutchinson, Debra (David) Craighead of Fulton, Missouri, and Kathie Hathaway of Ottawa; son, Kurt (Dana) Stelter of Wichita; five grandchildren, Brooke Kirmer of Wichita, Chad (Libby) Long of Maize, Adam Hathaway of Lawrence, Andrea (Tyler) Fredricks of Ottawa, and Garrett Stelter of Wichita; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Sherri Kirmer Stringer; and 12 siblings.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, July 13, 2023 at Laurel Cemetery, Haven, Kansas with military honors. Family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 12, at Ott Funeral Home, Haven. Jeanette (Jen) Nixon&nbsp;, 68 of Newton, Kansas passed away Sunday, July 2 at Newton Medical Center. &nbsp;She was born July 16,1954 in Wolf Point, Montana, the daughter of CL and Lydia (Pankratz) Derksen. &nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Jen was a knitter, gardener and &nbsp;K-State Football fan. &nbsp;She enjoyed cross stitching, cooking, collecting antiques, artfully arranging things and living life. &nbsp;She always had a dog, most recently Fred, a basset hound.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Jen graduated from Hesston College (74) and Tabor (76) with a Bachelors in Social Work. &nbsp;She then went to California for a few years, then worked in La Junta, Colorado &nbsp;at the VA. &nbsp;It was here she met and married Nick Nixon&nbsp;(Oct 21, 1978) . Then she moved to Grand Junction, Colorado working at the VA and later the Regional Center where she eventually became the head QA of Social work. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 2008 she retired and moved to Kansas to be closer to extended family. &nbsp;She is survived by her son Brian (Michelle) Nixon.&nbsp;

Robert E. Smalley 96, died July 10, 2023 at his Newton residence. He was born July 27, 1926 in Newton, Kansas to Eugene O and Abbie (Powell) Smalley. He married Carroll Royston at First United Methodist Church in Newton and she preceded him in death on December 1, 2018.

Robert was a long time active member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton. He owned and operated Smalley's T.V. and Maritime repair as well as selling real estate through Smalley Realty. &nbsp;He served his country in WWII in the Merchant Marines.

He is survived by his daughter Susan (Leon) Scott; sons mike (Kendra) Smalley and David (Barbara) Smalley; one brother Norman (Barbara) Smalley. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son Jeff Smalley and one brother Jack Smalley

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 17, 2023 at First United Methodist Church in Newton with The Reverend Kim Andrews officiating. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday July 16, 2023 at Petersen Funeral Home. &nbsp;Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery Newton.

Patricia Ellen Hornbeck, 69, died July 7, 2023, at her home in Nickerson. She was born June 14, 1954, in Hutchinson, to Oscar and Colleen (Cavanaugh) Hornbeck.

Patty graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1972. She worked for many years as a banker at Central Bank and Trust and at retirement she was working for Jackson Meats, in Hutchinson. Patty enjoyed spending time outside, especially taking care of and perfecting her yard. She loved to spend time with her family.

Patty is survived by: husband, Rick Schuller, Nickerson; brothers, Dan Hornbeck (Pam), Hutchinson, Mike Hornbeck (Dana), Owasso, Oklahoma, Joe Hornbeck, Wichita; sister, Kathy Turner (Alan), Hutchinson; daughters, Lori Kaufman (Brandon), Amarillo, Texas, Jessica Pyles (Willie), Hutchinson; sons. Phil Schuller, Alaska, Mark Schuller, Colorado; nieces, Danette Dean (Kevin), Hutchinson, Chelsey Myrick (Josh), Hutchinson; 14 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date in Alaska.

John James Nisly (JJ), age 65, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2023 after a battle with cancer.

He was born in Hutchinson, KS on September 30, 1957, to John and Sylvia Nisly. &nbsp;He decided that Kansas was the place to live and at 20 years old, he went to Indiana to convince Hilda ‘Joy’ Miller of that as well. &nbsp;They were married in 1978, and eight years later they were proud parents to two girls, Lolita Miller (Joe), Roxie Heatwole (Dave), and two boys, Matt Nisly (Jackie), and Dale Nisly (Tash).

He was a very educated man, but wasn’t much for school. &nbsp;As a child, he learned most of his skills from his father as well as figuring them out himself. He was well known for his ability to repair Massey Ferguson combines, lawn mowers, and many brands of tractors. &nbsp;For 20 years, he owned Double J’s Agri-Service, and eventually transitioned to driving a semi-truck for ProVia Logistics.

In his early years he enjoyed playing softball and guitar. &nbsp;Later on, his hobbies included golf, woodworking and turning out pieces of art on his wood lathe.

He had a strong passion for teaching kids at the JAM (Jesus And Me) ministry, driving the JAM bus, serving and mentoring others, listening to worship music, and playing with his grandkids. &nbsp;His number one desire in life was to follow Jesus. &nbsp;His retirement goals of helping and serving others were cut short by his cancer illness. Despite spending many days going to doctor appointments and being required to rest, he rarely complained and made a conscious decision to “choose joy” no matter what the circumstance.

JJ is survived by: &nbsp;his wife, Joy; children, Lolita (Joe), Roxie (Dave), Matt (Jackie), Dale (Tash); siblings, Joye Miller (Ellis), Janie Ediger (Randy), Joan Yoder (Hank), Jeannie Miller (Tim), Dave Nisly (Pam); grandkids, Tasha and Jevon Miller, Asia, Lincoln and Kannon Heatwole, Alexa, Jovie, Easton and Callaway Nisly, and Jayda, Shay, and Chance Nisly. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents.
