Ervin Reinert, 92, died November 9, 2023, at his home. He was born November 29, 1930, in Lincoln, Kansas, to Edwin and Anna (Panzer) Reinert.

July 14th, 1997 he married Kathy D. Clary. They were married 26 years.

Ervin was a cattle rancher and a business owner of a 17 line trucking company. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church.

Ervin is survived by: wife, Kathy Reinert, Hutchinson; daughters, Jeri Thetford (Steve), Hutchinson, Jalaine Witham (Marty), Wichita, Jacqie Schmidt (Scott), Hutchinson; sons, Joe Reinert (Deby) Cassidy, Kenny Reinert, New Mexico, Gary Reinert (Susan), Minneapolis, Steven Schmidt, Salt Lake City; sister, Lois McClelland; brother, Lonnie Reinert; grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Eileen; brother, Jarrold.

Memorial service will be 1 pm Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at Elliott Mortuary. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service (12-1). Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may sign the book from 9 am to 5 pm Monday and Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary. Honorary pallbearers will be John Schmidt of Pawnee Rock, Kansas and Elmer Kroeker of Inman Kansas

Beverly Ann Candy, 73, passed peacefully in her sleep with family by her side on Thursday, November 9th.&nbsp; Bev owned and operated C&amp;D car wash at 13th and Broadway for 20 years.&nbsp;

Beverly was born January 28, 1950, in Harrison, Arkansas to L.D. Diamond and Willie Faye (Mays) Diamond.&nbsp; They moved to Wichita, Kansas when she was 18 months old. Beverly married Jim F. "Sonny" Candy on November 22, 1976.

She was an artist whose artwork was displayed in the American Red Cross office throughout the world for more than 23 years and did several pieces for Henry's Department store.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents JL McKinney &amp; Fern Belle Arnold, Loyd Diamond &amp; Violet Marie Thornton, Mary Ethel Johnson &amp; William Samuel Mays, her parents L.D. &amp; Faye Diamond, her younger brother Larry Dean Diamond.

She is survived by her beloved husband Sonny, her sister Linda Kaye Stoner (Michael), her brother Richard Allen Diamond, several nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers Memorials may be designated in her memory for the American Diabetes Association.

Visitation will be held 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 14th at Baker Funeral Home Valley Center, Kansas where family will be receiving.

On November 8, 2023, Eunice Jane Unruh Esau left us to join her loved ones with Jesus in heaven. She was born to Harrison and Anna (Schroeder) Unruh in Hillsboro, Kansas, on Dec. 23, 1928, an early Christmas present. Having a birthday around Christmas wasn’t always a joy for Eunice. As a child, she would often plan her birthday during the summer inviting friends over and forgetting to inform her parents until after the guests started arriving at their farm between Durham and Hillsboro. But that was Eunice: full of ideas fueled by her high energy. Being the youngest, she might even have been spoiled by her two older brothers, Chester and Allen, and her older sister, Dorothy.

Things changed when Dorothy married Reinhold Schmidt and started her family. Eunice was still in grade school, but spent much of her time babysitting her nephew, Randy, and niece, Betta Ruth.

Eunice attended the Hillsboro schools and often would spend the winters with family in town. She especially enjoyed her cousin, Sylvia. They got into many scrapes together since both were ornery and boy crazy.

Eunice graduated from high school and attended Bethel College for two years where she met and married a handsome blonde, Willis “Cot” Esau, whom she first noticed on the Bethel College basketball team. They were married on the third floor of the administration building in the chapel on the Bethel College campus in 1948. Living in student housing and finishing up college found them busy as Eunice was working as a secretary to get “Cot” through college. Upon graduation, they moved to Ransom, Kansas where they had their first child, Sherry Sue. Willis was teaching high school chemistry and coaching. His second job was in Osage City where Eunice gave birth to Rex Dale.

With two children in tow, Eunice and Willis moved to Kansas City, where “Cot” attended UMKC School of Dentistry, and Eunice continued to mother while selling Tupperware. Vickie Lynn was born during this time. Their last move to Hutchinson was where Dr. W. R. Esau set up his practice and Eunice ran the household. Todd was born in 1963, and the family was complete.

Eunice wisely insisted her children were raised in the church. She attended First Mennonite in Hutchinson until she passed away. She was active, serving in many capacities, and always baking lots of zweibach which she would deliver to any guests inclined to visit her church or sell at the MCC Sale in the spring. Eunice was a friend to all. She never knew a stranger which was demonstrated by her conversational gifts. Often on family vacations, she would know everyone before leaving the resort. People fascinated her. Even in the last five years, when she suffered from dementia, she found joy in sitting in the lobby of the nursing home watching people come in and out of the building and greeting them with a friendly, “hi.”

Life blessed Eunice and Cot with 4 children, 11 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and many friends who were like family. Eunice has watched many friends and family, including her beloved husband, Cot (2016) leave this earth, and now we can only imagine the celebration welcoming Eunice into heaven.

Her family was blessed to have a mother/mother-in-law, and grandmother with her energy and lust for life. Children are Sherry (Mark) Krehbiel of Salina, Rex (Connie) Esau of Austin, Vickie (Bob) Howard of Kansas City, and Todd (Julie) Esau of Hutchinson. Grandchildren are Mindy Burr, Kyle (Kara) Krehbiel, Jacob (Erin) Krehbiel, Kateisha (Fabian) Porta, Cole (Meghan) Esau, Travis (Jenni) Howard, Straton (Caroline) Howard, Halie (C.J.) Heinz, Jordan (Ashley) Esau, Natasha Esau, and Michaela Esau.

We will miss our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. We will miss her kisses, her eyes lighting up when we visited, and her winks. Yes, those special winks. There was one for everyone.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at First Mennonite Church, 52 Rambler Rd., Hutchinson, Kansas. Inurnment will take place in the columbarium at First Mennonite Church. Eunice Jane Unruh Esau |1928-2023|

Leroy Earl Johnson, 91, died November 9, 2023, at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, Buhler. He was born March 12, 1932, in Buffalo, OK, to Willard and Fern Doris (Ripple) Johnson.

Leroy served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. He owned the Conoco Full-Service Station, located at 7th and Main Street for many years. Not only was he the owner, but also the mechanic. After retirement, he worked as a cashier, stocker, and greeted people at Wal-Mart in Woodword, OK. Leroy will be remembered for his orneriness and his love of working on vehicles. He was of the Baptist faith.

On August 21, 1955, he married Vera Doreen Shuck, in Hugoton, KS. She died August 19, 1992, after they shared just a few days shy of their 37th wedding anniversary. On April 29, 1993, he married Mary (Crawford) Poindexter, in Canadian County, OK. She died July 11, 2019.

Leroy is survived by: his children: Denice Phipps, Debbie Hash, Darrel Johnson, and Lyndol Johnson (Lynette), all of Hutchinson; siblings, Robert Johnson, Mary Dean, Kenneth Johnson, Doris Fothergill, Paula Matkins; 26 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; sons, Lynn Johnson and Darin Johnson; and grandson, Shane Phipps.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, with military honors presented by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary.

Barbara Wiegand was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, on October 3, 1956, and passed away on November 7, 2023. She was the only daughter of Harold E. and Maxine M. Sours Stever.

Barbara attended public schools and graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1974. She learned to play the piano when she was three years old. Barbara was involved in musical programs and various singing groups all through school. She was a voracious reader pretty much her whole life, along with being a very skilled needlecraft person. Barbara was a life member of the Antique Automobile Club of America, a life member of the Horseless Carriage Club of American, and a life member of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America.

She married Terry Wiegand on March 11, 1978, in Hutchinson, and they started their life together in Waterloo, Iowa. Terry was working for John Deere in Waterloo when their daughter, Mary Elizabeth Kathleen was born. They lived in Waterloo until late 1989, when they moved back to Hutchinson.

Barbara went to work for Cessna Aircraft Company in Wichita and held the position of Hazardous Materials Shipping Coordinator until leaving the company. She and Terry really enjoyed touring with their 1916 Buick Touring Car.

Barbara was preceded in death by: her parents; mother and father-in-law; and various aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She is survived by: her husband of 45+ years; her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Kathleen Wiegand Strong; son-in-law, James Strong; grandsons, Bobby and Matt Strong; stepdaughter, Jennifer Lund; step-grandsons, Allen Roush, Levi Clark; niece, Sarah Montoya; and Miss Muggins, her faithful Scotty Girl.

Per Barbara’s request, she wanted to be cremated and no service to be held.

Barbara Wiegand |1956-2023|

Eldon Edward Pauls was born to Ed and Louise (Edigar) Pauls March 10, 1932 in Moundridge KS in McPherson County. Religion played an important part in the Pauls family and he attended church and Sunday School at Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church all his early years. He attended school in McPherson County starting at Peaceful elementary and graduated from Moundridge High School in 1951. He enjoyed sports and agricultural classes in school and in 1952, traveled to Denver Colorado to do voluntary service at General Rose Hospital for 2 years. While there, Eldon discovered snow skiing and ice skating, spending a great deal of time among friends.

After coming home from Denver, he worked for Ediger Brother’s as well as Clinton Schmidt in construction. He also worked for Bell Telephone in Hutchinson. In 1955 when the offer came to farm with his brother Irv in Western Kansas, he did not hesitate. He and his brother worked together in Kalvesta and them formed a partnership and moved their operation to Ulysses, Kansas. While there they had their first experience farming with irrigation. They raised several crops that were new to them, including sugar beets and castor beans. They also raised a herd of sheep and fed cattle.

Eldon met Allene Ivy Day in Wichita, a friend and co-worker of this brother Herb’s wife, Joleen. Thus began a long distance romance that culminated in a marriage September 17th of 1961, after a year of dating. Starting their new life together in an old army barracks was an adventrue to be sure with lots of fun along the way with Irvin and his family living close by. They continued to farm and began a family with the adoption of Merrile Elaine in August of 1963. In 1964, a move to Garden City occurred due to a physician’s recommendation to leave farming related to a bad back. He worked there at St. Catherine’s Hospital in maintenance and also at Oswald’s Manufacturing and Ansel Cab doing welding. In February of 1966 they added to their family with the adoption of Luellen Joy.

In 1968, Eldon moved his family to Dodge City to begin work at BJ Manufacturing to continue to pursue a career in welding. There they purchased a ½ acre land plot and built a new home, which at that time was out of the city limits but was later annexed in to town. Soon after the cattle business dipped and BJ Manufacturing had a large lay off that included Eldon. He soon found work in the maintenance and grounds department at the Dodge City Community College. He continued his work there until he retired 23 years later in 1994. At the start of his employment the campus was brand new and Eldon participated in the building of dormitories, the Diseal mechanics building, the addition to the Fine Arts building, the Horse Science building and mentoring young athletes every year, who were under his tutelage.

All the while, at home, Eldon maintained a yard and garden that was the envy of the neighborhood ( the local police were especially interested in the large poppy crop) and encouraged his daughters to work in and enjoy the outdoors and nature. Always, from the time of birth, Eldon encouraged his daughters in their spiritual lives by providing an exemplary example of Christian Life. The family attended church at the College Heights Nazarene Church. Eldon served there as usher and on the Board of Trustees Many good times were shared with piano recitals, band performances and musicals as music was always valued in the Pauls home. Education was also an avenue encouraged and provided to his kids through college. In is own words, when asked what spiritual legacy he would like to leave, he responded, “The strength from the Lord I drew when I started farming on my own with Irv and when I had cancer. The Lord’s love for me and the never ending strength. I would like this dependence on the Lord to be passed to my children so that one day we can have a glorious reunion in Heaven.” Later he would say this included his grandchildren as well. Lou and her husband traveled to Kazakhstan to adopt two boys, Alex and Grant, from an orphanage there. Eldon supported the boys by attending their sporting events and all the other extracurricular and church activities as well as their love of mechanics.

In 2004, after they they moved to Hutchinson KS, they began to attend the South Hutchinson Mennonite Church, now known as Journey Mennonite. They developed friendships there that have lasted nearly 20 years by being involved in grow groups along the way. In their years together as a

family many happy times were spent in the Colorado Rockies and other Mountain ranges, their vacations in Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, North and South Dakota and Wyoming as well as the well deserved trip for Eldon and Allene to England to meet her family there. They did everything together and now, they are together again for part of the glorious reunion he looked forward to so much.

 </figure>Eldon Edward Pauls was born to Ed and Louise (Edigar) Pauls March 10, 1932 in Moundridge KS in McPherson County. Religion played an important part in the Pauls family and he attended church and Sunday School at Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church all his early years. He attended school in McPherson County starting at Peaceful elementary and graduated from Moundridge High School in 1951. He enjoyed sports and agricultural classes in school and in 1952, traveled to Denver Colorado to do voluntary service at General Rose Hospital for 2 years. While there, Eldon discovered snow skiing and ice skating, spending a great deal of time among friends.After coming home from Denver, he worked for Ediger Brother’s as well as Clinton Schmidt in construction. He also worked for Bell Telephone in Hutchinson. In 1955 when the offer came to farm with his brother Irv in Western Kansas, he did not hesitate. He and his brother worked together in Kalvesta and them formed a partnership and moved their operation to Ulysses, Kansas. While there they had their first experience farming with irrigation. They raised several crops that were new to them, including sugar beets and castor beans. Janice Louise Jensen, 83, passed away at her home on Sunday, November 5, 2023 in Hutchinson, KS. She was born in Hutchinson, KS on April 26, 1940, the daughter of Frank and Margaret (Strawn) Sterling.

Janice attended Nickerson High School and graduated in 1958. In 1981, Janice opened up Adam and Eves Hairstyle Salon where she owned and worked for many years. On September 2, 1988, she married Richard “Rick” A. Jensen in Hutchinson, KS. They spent 34 wonderful years together before he passed away on September 18, 2022. Jan and Rick enjoyed many wonderful trips together. They enjoyed motorcycle trips, especially their trip to Europe. They square danced and participated in bus trips and card parties. Jan was a longtime member of the American Legion and Moose Lodge.

Janice is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Margaret Sterling; husband, Rick Jensen; and her five siblings, Don Sterling, Norma Scott, Richard Sterling, Ernie Sterling and Joyce Elliot.

She is survived by her six children, Dan (Micki) Smith, Christine (Jeff) Neighbors, DeAnna (Donnie) Blew all of Hutchinson, KS, Teresa (Louis) Enriquez of El Paso, TX, Staci (Jon) Strnad and Sean Jensen all of Belleville, KS; 12 grandchildren, Mark and Keith Gregg, Ashley and Brody Smith, Jeffrey and Kelton Neighbors, Amanda, Andrea and Angela Jackson, Courtney Enriquez, Morgan and Grant Strnad; 18 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023 from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave, Hutchinson, KS 67502. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Salt City Cowboy Church, 810 N. Main St, South Hutchinson, KS 67505, with Pastor Montie McFerrin officiating.

Mark A. Reade, 67, Hays, died Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at Rush County Memorial Hospital in LaCrosse.

He was born August 16, 1956 in Goodland, the son of Radean C. “Ray” and Phyllis (Amack) Reade. In 1974, he graduated from Buhler High School and he later earned an Associate’s Degree from Hutchinson Junior College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from Fort Hays State University. For over 30 years, he was an account executive for Berlin Wheeler. On November 5, 2021, he was united in marriage to Sonya R. (Herrman) Garrett in Hays. Mark enjoyed music, a wide variety of sports, and was an avid Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, and University of Kansas fan. He was an outstanding softball player and will be posthumously inducted into the USSSA Softball Hall of Fame in February of 2024. In addition to softball, Mark loved to play golf and scored his first ever hole-in-one at Carey Park Golf Course in Hutchinson. He possessed a deep love for his wife Sonya, his family, and his friends.

Survivors include his wife Sonya, of the home in Hays, his father Ray Reade of Hutchinson, a son Troy Reade and wife Kassie and their son Finley Reade of Gladstone, MO, a daughter Baylee Reade of San Antonio, TX, a brother Ron Reade and wife Karen of Hutchinson, step-daughters, Kendahl Goetzmann and husband Brett of Manhattan, KS and Abby Garrett and fiancé Zane Nelson of Lincoln, NE, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother Phyllis Reade on April 12, 2019.

A celebration of Mark’s life will take place at 9:30 am on Saturday, November 11, 2023 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. Michael William McConnaughy, 75, of Wichita, died November 6, 2023, at his residence. He was born August 20, 1948, in St. Joseph, MO, to James Clinton and Theda Thedinger McConnaughy.

Michael graduated from Trinity High School (Hutchinson) and attended Hutchinson Community College. He was a long-haul truck driver. Michael enjoyed traveling, hunting, photography, working on cars, antique shopping and was an animal lover. He loved his family, would assist anyone in need, was outgoing and selfless. Michael’s favorite phrase was “Honey, this won’t take long.”

On February 3, 1968, he married Terry Rupp in McPherson. They were blessed with two children during their 44 years of marriage. They later divorced.

Michael is survived by his: son, Daniel (Juanita Norton) McConnaughy of Wichita; daughter, LoriBeth (Jonathan) McConnaughy of Wichita; grandchildren, Tristan McConnaughy of Mexia, TX, Taylor McConnaughy of Hutchinson, Dylan Oliver of Houston, TX; sisters, Patricia Bunker of Sunnyvale, CA, Peggy McConnaughy of Chico, CA, Jo Ann (Bill) Fluderer of Lenexa, KS, and Mary (Brad) VanRiette of Iola; brothers, Don (Lynn) McConnaughy of Hutchinson and John (Lisa) McConnaughy of Memphis, TN; former wife and mother of his children, Terry McConnaughy of Wichita; and partner of seven years, Janice Koontz of Wichita.

Dale Eugene Schrag, 75, of Goessel, Kansas, quietly passed away Monday, November 6, 2023 at Bethesda Home in Goessel. Born September 16, 1948 in Goessel, Kansas, the son of Leslie E. and Norma K. (Unrau) Schrag.

He graduated from Moundridge High School with the class of 1966. Dale continued his education graduating from McPherson College and Emporia Kansas State College.

He was a member of First Mennonite Church of Newton.

Dale was employed by the State of Kansas until a critical automobile accident caused him to retire in 2003.

Dale had a zest for gaining knowledge with a great love of books, and a fond study of Mennonite history. He enjoyed traveling to Europe, discovering the countries in which his ancestors lived, and exploring his heritage.

His battle with serious medical issues in recent years showed his courage to stay strong and to keep fighting to the end. His faith in God sustained him through it all.

Loving memories remain with his sister, Carolyn and husband, Gerald; nieces, Lisa and husband, Matthew Houston, Michelle and husband, Timothy Rohrer, and Kirsten and husband, Eric Kormos; nephew, Bryan and wife, Carolyn Faus, and their families.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Charles; and infant sisters, Carla and Donna.

Lyla Bybee, age 72 of Wichita Kansas passed away peacefully November 2, 2023 surrounded by her loving family.&nbsp; Lyla was born in Morrilton, Arkansas on July 24, 1951 to Charlie and Dean (McDonald) Pruitt and in later years Grandma Dean came to live with Lyla and John until her death in 2021.

Lyla was preceded in death by her loving husband John Bybee, her parents Charlie and Dean, and daughters Vicki Dresslaer and Sherry Hubble.

Lyla is survived by daughter, Jennifer Baird (Kirk) of Valley Center; son Terry Norton (Dana) of Wichita; brother Ray Pruitt (Alta) of Hattieville, AR; son-in-law Jim Dresslaer of Wichita along with a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.

Lyla was always up for an adventure. Lyla loved to travel and has gone many places with John or weekend retreats with her Sorority Sisters even taking an Alaskan cruise with the Dutch oven gang. But the best of all were the mega sleepovers with the grandchildren! One of the most memorable memories for most of her grandchildren was when Nana bought her light up shoes so she could match theirs.&nbsp;

As the children and grandchildren grew up and with the death of John in 2016 Lyla wanted and needed something to fill the empty void she felt. Lyla began to focus on volunteering at many of the local charities and her biggest focus was with the biker community.... It didn’t take long until she was known as “Naughty Nana.” Lyla did everything from collecting socks for the veterans to crocheting hats for the children in the hospital to rocking the pavement in the ARC Sedgwick County Motorcycle rides, not to mention her “adopt a family” at Christmas time.&nbsp;But Lyla was best known for the “Naughty Nana Turkey Rides.” Lyla came up with the idea to make and deliver Thanksgiving dinners to those in need and needless to say it was a big hit and is now going on its eighth year!

In 2022 Lyla was honored in having a “Toy Run” named after her known as “Naughty Nana’s Santa Ride.”

Lyla will always be remembered for her love of people and what she could do to make their lives happier and the way she always stepped up without asking why. We couldn’t have asked for a better parent, grandparent, sister or friend, and we'll miss Lyla every day.&nbsp;Lyla’s memory will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved her.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, you may designate to Lyla's Memorial, (in care of Baker Funeral Home PO Box 242, Valley Center, Kansas 67147.)

Richard “Dick” Bartel, 95, of Valley Center, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, November 4, 2023. He was born December 11, 1927 to Jacob and Ida (Unruh) Bartel in Hillsboro, Kansas. He was the youngest of five children and grew up on the family farm north of Lehigh, Kansas. He graduated from Lehigh High School in 1945. During his youth his main sport was fast-pitch softball where he was a pitcher and played for many town teams around Marion County. One of his favorite stories to share was about showing up in a grain truck to his games. After high school he farmed and ranched and was proud of his registered Black Angus cattle herd.

In 1949 he married the local bookkeeper for the Lehigh Co-op Elevator, Ethel Dalke. They farmed for several more years before moving to Newton, Kansas where Dick was employed in the collections department for a finance company. In 1963 they purchased a Western Auto Store in Valley Center and moved into town. They continued to operate a hardware business until 2021.

Dick enjoyed fishing, water skiing, boating and his lake house on Table Rock Lake. He and Ethel also enjoyed charter bus trips and traveled throughout the country. Dick was always in search of a good visit and could talk to anyone at length. He didn’t know a stranger.

One of his greatest involvements was with the local Lions Club where he had been a member since 1964. He served on all levels within the club and was a Melvin Jones Recipient for his years of service to the club and the community. He was one of the best recruiters of new members and was short of his goal of a 100 member group at the time of his death.

He is preceded in death by his parents Jacob and Ida Bartel, brothers Art, Walter and Harrison, sister Mabel, infant son Richard K. and his wife of 72 years, Ethel.

He is survived by two sons and their wives, Mike and Charolette, Tom and Lynn, all of Valley Center, grandchildren Sarah and Benjie Wolter, Nathan Bartel, Kristen Bartel, Michael Hodson, Jennifer and Joe Anaya, Stephanie and Brad Blessen and ten great grandsons.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, November 11 at the First United Methodist Church, 560 N. Park, Valley Center, Kansas.

Pearl Lenora Cabral, 98, of Hutchinson, died November 2, 2023, at Good Samaritan Society-Hutchinson Village. She was born January 26, 1925, in Kansas City, MO.

A devoted wife and mother, Pearl worked in housekeeping at First National Bank for many years before getting her CNA license at age 60. She then worked as a CNA for over 10 years in several area nursing homes, including Golden Plains, before retiring. Pearl had also worked at the Naval air base near Yoder during WWII. She enjoyed drawing, singing, collecting for the March of Dimes, American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, and spending time with her dog, Butch. Pearl had been a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church for many years, where she served on the Altar Society, and was currently a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church.

On June 21, 1951, she married Jesus Sanchez Cabral in Hutchinson. They shared nearly 47 years of marriage before his death on January 4, 1998.

Pearl is survived by: her children, Patrick Cabral (Carolyn) of Topeka, Randolph Cabral of Wichita, Gerard Cabral of Arkansas City, Kim Cabral of Peabody, Jesse Cabral of Peabody, Gretchen Sanchez of Hutchinson; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; and children, Brenda Cabral, Jerome Cabral, Judith Cabral, Jeff Cabral, and Nelda Petering.

According to Pearl’s wishes, her body will be cremated.

Parish Rosary will be 10 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 13, 2023, both at St. Teresa Catholic Church, 211 E 5th Ave., Hutchinson. Inurnment will follow in Eastside Cemetery.

Michael Dean Hollowell, 66 passed away November 6, 2023.

Michael was born to Phyllis Elaine Gilmore Hollowell and Kenneth Allan Hollowell February 2, 1957 in Arkansas City, KS.

Michael grew up in Johnson City, TN. &nbsp;He graduated from Science Hill High School in 1975. &nbsp;Michael received his BBA at East Tennessee University, Cum Laude and his CPA credentials from the State of Tennessee. &nbsp;Michael was employed as the city’s accountant in Johnson City for several years. In 1982, he offered employment at his uncle, Ronald Johnson’s accounting firm, Johnson and Duncan, in Wichita, Ks. &nbsp;After 3 years Michael was made partner. The firm became Johnson, Duncan, and Hollowell. &nbsp;His son Matthew joined the firm in 2007. &nbsp;Michael has been helping people with their accounting services for 41 years.

Michael’s great joy in life was being with his family whether it was Sunday family dinners, visiting outside on his patio or deck, or gathered around the TV watching his beloved Tennessee Volunteer football team. &nbsp;He absolutely couldn’t wait for the first Vols game of each season. &nbsp;Michael was also an avid fan of the Wichita State Shockers and Kansas City Chiefs. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Michael is preceded in death by his parents, Phyllis and Kenneth Hollowell and Uncle, Ronald Johnson.

Michael is survived by his spouse of 40 years, Joyce Washburn Hollowell, son Matthew R. Hollowell (Anna Means Hollowell), one granddaughter, Alla M. Hollowell, siblings, David Hollowell (Sara) and Ron Hollowell (Fran). Plus, many cousins, aunts and uncles.

Michael’s wish was to not have any services, he will be cremated, and ashes buried in Joyce’s hometown of Caldwell, Kansas at the Caldwell Cemetery. &nbsp;In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to American Diabetes Association.

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of James Thomas Coons III.

Jim was born March 13, 1964, in Manhattan, Kansas. He will always be lovingly remembered by his surviving family members. &nbsp;Jim was 59 years old, he peacefully passed away on November 2, 2023, at his home in Hutchinson, Kansas surrounded by his loving family. Jim will always be missed and never forgotten; the world lost a great young man.

In high school Jim was an exceptional wrestler, he began his wrestling career at 5 years of age. He was a four-year letterman and team captain; graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1983. While in high school his greatest athletic accomplishment was becoming a three-time KSHAA 6A State Wrestling Champion and winning the Grand State Championship in 1982 at 105 lbs. While a sophomore, Jim lead the Salt Hawks to a 6A State Team Title in 1981 and as junior a 6A State Team Runner-Up Title in 1982. &nbsp;Jim is recognized by many as one of the most outstanding high school wrestlers from the state of Kansas in the 1980’s. He was an amazing wrestling talent, his three individual titles were as a sophomore in 1981 at 98 lbs., as a junior in 1982 at 105 lbs., and as a senior in 1983 at 119 lbs. Jim was undefeated as a high school senior while at Hutchinson High School. He was recognized nationally in high school as an “All-American” member in 1983 by placing at Iowa Nationals. After high school Jim earned a full ride wrestling scholarship to the University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY. As an amateur athlete Jim won many regional and placed in several national wrestling tournaments in both freestyle and folkstyle.&nbsp;

He began his professional career as a high school assistant wrestling coach, working with his uncle Lyle Neville at Hutchinson High School in the late 1980’s through the early 1990’s. After concluding his high school coaching career, Jim kept involved with his passion for the sport of wrestling, in coaching youth and freestyle teams, and officiating youth wrestling matches and tournaments. He thoroughly enjoyed being able to pass his knowledge and love of the sport to future generations. &nbsp;

Jim had many talents and varied interests including artistry and craftsmanship in stained glass, iron and wood working. His favorite pastimes were gardening, cultivating Lillie’s in his beautiful Lily Pond. He loved traveling, snow skiing, hunting for wild mushrooms in southwest Colorado in the fall. He was a fisherman, he often fished for Rainbow Trout on the West Fork of the Dolores River in southwestern Colorado. He was an accomplished landscaper and gardener who loved the beauty of flowers and blooming plants. Jimmy spent much of his spare time enjoying the natural beauty of Arizona, Colorado and Kansas camping and fishing with friends. He loved college and professional sports, he was an avid K-State and KC Chiefs football fan throughout his life, attending many home football games. Jim was also a serious collector of rare coins, vintage baseball cards and Indian artifacts.

Jim was a remarkably friendly, kind, loving and talented man who lived his life to the fullest. He was a friend to all and would literally do anything for someone that needed help, Jimmy was loved by all. He always loved spending time with his family and friends. He was the light of any room he was in and always had an amazing sense of humor. He was the rock to his mother as a son and friend and will be greatly missed by all.&nbsp;

While in high school his greatest athletic accomplishment was becoming a three-time KSHAA 6A State Wrestling Champion and winning the Grand State Championship in 1982 at 105 lbs. While a sophomore, Jim lead the Salt Hawks to a 6A State Team Title in 1981 and as junior a 6A State Team Runner-Up Title in 1982. &nbsp;Jim is recognized by many as one of the most outstanding high school wrestlers from the state of Kansas in the 1980’s. He was an amazing wrestling talent, his three individual titles were as a sophomore in 1981 at 98 lbs., as a junior in 1982 at 105 lbs., and as a senior in 1983 at 119 lbs. Jim was undefeated as a high school senior while at Hutchinson High School. He was recognized nationally in high school as an “All-American” member in 1983 by placing at Iowa Nationals. After high school Jim earned a full ride wrestling scholarship to the University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY. As an amateur athlete Jim won many regional and placed in several national wrestling tournaments in both freestyle and folkstyle.&nbsp;He began his professional career as a high school assistant wrestling coach, working with his uncle Lyle Neville at Hutchinson High School in the late 1980’s through the early 1990’s. After concluding his high school coaching career, Jim kept involved with his passion for the sport of wrestling, in coaching youth and freestyle teams, and officiating youth wrestling matches and tournaments. He thoroughly enjoyed being able to pass his knowledge and love of the sport to future generations. &nbsp;Jim had many talents and varied interests including artistry and craftsmanship in stained glass, iron and wood working. His favorite pastimes were gardening, cultivating Lillie’s in his beautiful Lily Pond. He loved traveling, snow skiing, hunting for wild mushrooms in southwest Colorado in the fall. He was a fisherman, he often fished for Rainbow Trout on the West Fork of the Dolores River in southwestern Colorado. He was an accomplished landscaper and gardener who loved the beauty of flowers and blooming plants. Jimmy spent much of his spare time enjoying the natural beauty of Arizona, Colorado and Kansas camping and fishing with friends. He loved college and professional sports, he was an avid K-State and KC Chiefs football fan throughout his life, attending many home football games. Jim was also a serious collector of rare coins, vintage baseball cards and Indian artifacts.Jim was a remarkably friendly, kind, loving and talented man who lived his life to the fullest. He was a friend to all and would literally do anything for someone that needed help, Jimmy was loved by all. He always loved spending time with his family and friends. He was the light of any room he was in and always had an amazing sense of humor. He was the rock to his mother as a son and friend and will be greatly missed by all.&nbsp;The family will be announcing soon a date for Jim’s Celebration of Life. Marvin Kent Ratzlaff, 89, of Newton, Kansas, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2023 at Newton Presbyterian Manor. He was born April 22, 1934 in Chickasha, Oklahoma, the son of Bernard J. and Helena “Lena” (Koehn) Ratzlaff.

He graduated from Emporia State Teacher’s College.

Marvin previously owned a nursery and landscape business in McPherson and retired from the McPherson United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier.

He was united in marriage to Karen J. Spaht on April 20, 1958 in Fredonia.

Marvin was a member of the Lone Tree Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, rural Galva.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Karen Ratzlaff of Newton; children, Dallas (Elda) Ratzlaff of Galva, Marva (Tim) Curtis of Moundridge, Brad (Wendy) Ratzlaff of Olathe, and Chanin (Mark) Korte of Olathe; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sisters, Doris (Bob) Wilson of Gentry, AR, and Alverta Ratzlaff of Moundridge.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gilmer (Luella) Ratzlaff; and sister, Wilma Fern Ratzlaff.

Christine “Chris” J. Glahn, 87, of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 6, 2023, at Loving Care of McPherson.&nbsp; She was a homemaker and most recently worked in the cafeteria at St. Joseph Catholic School.

Chris was born on January 31, 1936, in Salina, Kansas, the daughter of Edward G. and Bessie L. (Turrentine) Bergstrom.&nbsp; She spent her formative years in Salina and graduated from Salina Central High School.&nbsp; After high school, Chris attended Kansas State University for one year.

On January 24, 1959, she was united in marriage to Donald Robert Glahn in Salina, KS.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on January 28, 2019.

Chris was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she also sang in the choir, helped teach the Happy Notes Sunday School Class, and participated in the Lamplighters Circle.&nbsp; Additionally, she belonged to TOPS Club and the Happy Homemakers FCE.

Survivors include: a son, Stephen Glahn (Michelle) of Marion, KS; daughter, Cheryl Lundberg (Kevin) of Spring Hill, KS; a sister, Virginia Pilcher (Carl) of Valley Center, KS; &nbsp;four grandchildren, April Sinor (Chris) of Eufaula, OK, Donald Tysdal of Moore, OK, Timothy Glahn (Heather) of McLouth, KS, and Janet Klenda (Brian) of Hillsboro, KS; and 14 great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM, Thursday, November 9, 2023, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Emily Spearman Cannon officiating.&nbsp; A visitation and viewing will be held from 2:00 PM until service time, Thursday, at the church.&nbsp; Burial will follow the service at the Valley View Cemetery, Roxbury, KS.

Donna Jane Stiffler, 65, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, November 5, 2023 after a courageous fight against cancer, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;She was born January 4, 1958, in Hutchinson, KS to John and Betty Haines.

Donna grew up an “Air Force brat” moving all over the United States and other countries including Spain. &nbsp;She graduated from Ruskin High School in Kansas City, MO. &nbsp;After becoming a mother to two girls, she went back to Hutchinson Community College and graduated with an Early Education degree. &nbsp;She spent many years as a job coach and did respite care for TECH. &nbsp;Her most treasured job was for Boys and Girls Club as their kids after school director for the mentally and physically handicapped. &nbsp;

Donna’s hobbies included always looking for a new recipe to try with the family and crafting; making wreaths and painting ceramics. &nbsp;She could bedazzle anything. &nbsp;She also had an enormous collection of salt and pepper shakers and chickens. &nbsp;Her family called her the crazy chicken lady and she would proudly wear shirts declaring so.

She is survived by her two daughters, Dannielle (Kevin) Stiffler and Janie Stiffler both of Hutchinson, KS; &nbsp;a sister, Laurie Brady of Missoula, MT; a brother, David (Brandie) Haines of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Jayson (Lacie) Kidd, Bryson (Kirstin) Kidd, Alexis (Hailey) Kidd; great grandchildren, Madison, Avery, and one more on the way.

Bret Allan Welch, 65, of Hutchinson, died October 31, 2023, at Hospice House. He was born July 16, 1958, in Hutchinson, to Fredrick ‘Fred’ James and Iris Darlene (Casto) Welch.

Bret attended Buhler High School. He went on to be a business man, always wheeling and dealing. He started Family Affair in 1996 to present, in Hutchinson. Bret also had other shops in Wichita. He had a great personality and always very humorous. In addition, Bret enjoyed motorcycles, playing the drums, fishing, camping, wood working, listening to Rock and Roll, and hanging out with his friends. He will be missed dearly by all.

On July 3, 1995, he married Rochelle Elaine Imel, in Hutchinson.

Bret is survived by: his wife, Rochelle Welch of Hutchinson; children, Brandon Bret (Keta) Welch of Hutchinson, Keeliza (J.C.) Loewen of Hutchinson, Laston Welch of Hutchinson, Erica Vierthaler of Wichita, Adrienne Vierthaler of Hutchinson; sister, Brenda Klug; bonus brother, Mark Klug; step-mom, Carla Welch; and 8 grandchildren.

Margaret Elaine Wray, 78, passed away November 6, 2023, at Halstead Health and Rehab in Halstead, Kansas. &nbsp;Elaine was born February 28, 1945, in Kansas City, Missouri to Carl and LaVina (Clevenger) McCrary. &nbsp;She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1963. &nbsp;Elaine met Michael B. Wray in 1963 and they married on January 27, 1964, in Newton, Kansas. &nbsp;She was a homemaker.

Wray in 1963 and they married on January 27, 1964, in Newton, Kansas. &nbsp;She was a homemaker.Elaine lived a full life and had a passion for everything horses, and in particular, riding in her youth, showing and owning halter horses, and attending the AQHA world show in Oklahoma City as well as local Quarter horse and Paint horse shows. &nbsp;She also loved the many dogs she had through the years, and they were always a significant part of the family, especially Annie who she leaves behind. &nbsp;Elaine was a great cook and always enjoyed family gatherings, especially Memorial Day weekends at the Legion Hall in Hamilton, Missouri, where she spent a significant portion of her life with her grandparents, Grandpa Paddy and Granny Mac. &nbsp;Elaine and her husband, Mike loved going to auctions of any kind and collected antiques over the course of their marriage. &nbsp;She could tell a great story and was always enthusiastic about telling these stories. &nbsp;Elaine never met a stranger and would talk to you like she’d known you forever. &nbsp;As a child in Springfield, Missouri, she listened to the Ozark Jubilee and was proud of the fact that she and singer, Brenda Lee, would walk to school together.
