Eldon E. Bontrager, 91, died August 22, 2023, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;He was born May 5, 1932, in Thomas, OK, to Eli S. and Delila (Miller) Bontrager.

Eldon was a farmer and the founder of Bontrager Custom Cabinets. &nbsp;He built kitchens for many homes in the area. &nbsp;For the past 18 years, Eldon was the early morning baker at Carolyn’s Essenhaus in Arlington, KS. &nbsp;He did not know a stranger and had an amazing ability to remember names and dates accurately.

Eldon grew up in Oklahoma and often spoke fondly of his boyhood days. He attended a one room school right next to their farm. A vivid memory was the day the schoolhouse burned down in 1938 when he was in the 1st grade.

When the draft was instated during the Korean War he went to work in a hospital in Kansas City. He often spoke of those years and how they contributed to strengthening his faith. He came back to marry Mary Ellen Yoder on his 23rd birthday in 1955 and they were privileged to celebrate 68 years together. They began married life in the Hutchinson, KS area, and moved to Kalona, IA for almost 3 years seeking medical help for Lynette. They returned in January of 1960. Many dreams and hopes were relinquished in the coming years as God called them to a life requiring much grace and endurance caring for their three handicapped daughters.

Eldon worked at Detroiter Manufacturing doing plumbing and then building cabinets. Later he was a partner of Prairie Construction and continued doing cabinets and trim work. After their move to Arlington he eventually started building cabinets on his own and Bontrager Custom Cabinets was founded.

In Aug. of 1968 they bought a farm and moved to the Arlington area. To some it seemed they moved to western Kansas. Eldon’s friendly personality built many relationships over the years. &nbsp;In 1998 they relocated to a smaller house across the drive to retire...but he did not retire. He continued farming and at age 70 he began working the early shift at Carolyn’s Essenhaus. He did that for 18 years and loved it. It was a good fit for him since he was often awake early anyway. He whistled as he fried donuts and assembled pies, and it fell to him to call the waitress if she overslept and needed a nudge. He was also the general maintenance man and fixed many things that malfunctioned. He knew no stranger and enjoyed many a glass of tea at the round table where the locals gathered daily to solve the world’s problems.&nbsp;

Eldon had rheumatic fever as a youth and knew his heart needed special care so he walked several miles almost daily. A pace maker supported his heart since 2015. He loved to drive around the countryside to check out the fields and see how everyone’s crops were doing. Not much escaped his watchful eye. He had a photographic memory and could remember dates and names with amazing accuracy. In these last few years we learned many things about people we did not know.&nbsp;

In 2020 Eldon spent 5 weeks in the hospital with Covid and his lungs were somewhat compromised since. &nbsp;He desperately wanted to get back to the restaurant and back to work but was never able. He avoided the recliner as long as he could, believing it would cause him to become decrepit. His work was his hobby.&nbsp;

He faithfully led his household in a daily devotional time and was a strong supporter of his church. His many stories about his time in 1W service inspired all his children to go into VS and many grandchildren have followed in his footsteps. It was his desire that God be glorified by his life.

Eldon is survived by: Mary Ellen, his wife of 68 years; children, Carolyn Bontrager, Arlington, Myron (Ilene) Bontrager, Arlington, Phyllis (Gareth) Yoder, Timpson, TX, and Marilyn (Dan) Korver, Ladysmith, WI; daughter-in-law, Mamie Bontrager, Arlington; 27 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; brothers, Vernon (Alta) Bontrager and Perry Bontrager; sister, Anna Mae Ropp; and sister-in-law, Esther Bontrager.

He was preceded in death by: &nbsp;his parents; children, Lynette Bontrager, LaVon Bontrager, Faith Bontrager, and Regina Bontrager; three stillborn grandchildren; siblings, Ruby Miller and husband Alvin, Henry Bontrager and wife Lydia Mae, Joe Bontrager and wife Salina, Sarah (stillborn), and Floyd Bontrager; brother-in-law, Lloyd Ropp; and sister-in-law, Pauline Bontrager.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday, August 28, 2023, at the Arlington Amish Mennonite Church, 15611 W. Arlington Road, Arlington, KS. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the church cemetery. &nbsp;Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, August 27, 2023, with the family present at the church.

Margaret Elaine Fehrenbacher, 101, died August 23, 2023, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born March 11, 1922, in Moscow, KS, to Harold and Ila (Lindsey) Cadman.

Elaine graduated from Moscow High School and was an insurance coordinator for Kinsley Hospital for many years.

She loved reading, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and watching Jeopardy. Even at 101 years young, was a very sharp lady. She also enjoyed flowers and gardening.

On February 14, 1944, she married Howard Eugene Fehrenbacher, in St. John, KS. They shared 58 years of marriage, prior to his death on August 20, 2002.

Elaine is survived by: children, Lonnie Fehrenbacher of Larned and Marita (Randy) Fisher of Wichita; grandchildren, Kevin, Dena, Maranda, Caradee, Landry, and Lindsy; 18 great- grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Schryl Fehrenbacher of Kingsville, TX.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; son, Larry; daughter, Rosemary; grandson, Travis Fisher; and seven siblings. &nbsp;

David Allen Polley, 64, of Nickerson, died August 23, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita. He was born March 21, 1959, in Georgetown, OH, to Grover and Barbara (Hauke) Polley.

David graduated from Ripley Union High School in Ripley, OH, in 1977. He served in the United States Army from 1977 until he retired at Fort Riley in 1997. David then moved to Hutchinson and worked as a guard at Hutchinson Correctional facility for a few years before taking a job at Capstone Logistics. He had worked there over 20 years and was working as Lead at the time of his death. David enjoyed being outdoors – hunting and fishing – and spending time with his grandchildren.

On September 21, 2018, he married Ginger L. Cota, in Nickerson. She survives.

Also surviving are: his stepchildren, Erin Cota (Kathrine) of Hutchinson, McKenzie Cota (Bobby Gonzales) of Nickerson, Carl Williams of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Michael Cota, Niko Gonzales; mother, Barbara Polley of Ripley, OH; brother, Daniel Polley of Ripley, OH; and many extended family members.

David was preceded in death by: his father; and brothers, Jerald, James, and Donald.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned.

Peggy Lois Black-Pianga,&nbsp;95, passed away on Friday, August 18, 2023 in Wichita, Kansas. She was born in Beggs, Oklahoma to John Riley Hill and Ruth Eldora Robertson. Lois was a life-long resident of Valley Center. For many years she owned and operated Craft Corner in Valley Center and Wichita. She loved crafts especially oil painting and crochet work. In her earlier years she baked and decorated birthday and wedding cakes for the people of Valley Center and surrounding communities.

Taken from Lois’s autobiography written 1999 -&nbsp;

“Even before I had children, I became a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. My church work included teaching a 4th grade class, serving in Sunday School nursery, financial secretary, circle chairman. Bazaar chairman, and vacation bible school chairman. Keeping busy and making things was always what I did. I guess I inherited the crafty side from my mother. I was always sewing things. I have also been active in the Extension Homemakers United and Sugar Bells Cake Club.”

She is preceded in death by her son David T. Black, grandson Bradley Mullinax, granddaughter Jennifer Ann Black Tucker, her parents John and Ruth Hill, sisters Glenna Woodruff and Ruth Rahm, and her brother John R. Hill Jr. ‘Bud’.&nbsp;

Peggy Lois Black-Pianga |2023|

Stephen Pierce Biddle died August 15, 2023 at his home in the Paramount Community and Rehab Center in Newton, Kansas.&nbsp; Dr. Biddle received his Bachelor’s degree from Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas and received his PhD in Theater Arts from the University of Kansas as well as a Doctor of Divinity from Bangor Theological Seminary.

Creative writing was his passion. As an author and playwright, he wrote twenty-two plays of which seven were produced. His Master's Thesis entitled,&nbsp;The Canteen, was produced by the Menninger Foundation in 1967.&nbsp; His play&nbsp;Quantrill&nbsp;about William Quantrill and the Quantrill raid on Lawrence, Kansas was produced at the University of Kansas. A popular success, it was extended two weeks during the spring of 1970. In 1971 Stephen was awarded a Shubert Fellowship.&nbsp;In 1975 his play,&nbsp;Walter World,&nbsp;was produced by Judson's Poet's Theater in New York City.&nbsp;

As an educator Dr. Biddle taught at the University of Kansas, Baker University, and Ottawa University. In retirement, he continued to write short stories, patiently typing his manuscripts on his favorite and trusty IBM electric typewriter. Stephen Biddle was born in Westfield, Massachusetts the son of Rev. Roger Biddle and Opal Biddle, both deceased. He is survived by his daughter Stephanie and her husband Josh, his former wife Phyllis Lautz Biddle, a brother Mark and his wife Karen, and a nephew Nate and his wife Lisa.

A memorial service will be held at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church on September 20 at 2:00 PM. Visitors and friends are invited to attend the memorial service. The internment will be a Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburgh Kansas on September 21 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Baker University.

 </figure>Stephen Pierce Biddle died August 15, 2023 at his home in the Paramount Community and Rehab Center in Newton, Kansas.&nbsp; Dr. Biddle received his Bachelor’s degree from Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas and received his PhD in Theater Arts from the University of Kansas as well as a Doctor of Divinity from Bangor Theological Seminary.Creative writing was his passion. As an author and playwright, he wrote twenty-two plays of which seven were produced. His Master's Thesis entitled,&nbsp;The Canteen, was produced by the Menninger Foundation in 1967.&nbsp; His play&nbsp;Quantrill&nbsp;about William Quantrill and the Quantrill raid on Lawrence, Kansas was produced at the University of Kansas. A popular success, it was extended two weeks during the spring of 1970. In 1971 Stephen was awarded a Shubert Fellowship.&nbsp;In 1975 his play,&nbsp;Walter World,&nbsp;was produced by Judson's Poet's Theater in New York City.&nbsp;As an educator Dr. Biddle taught at the University of Kansas, Baker University, and Ottawa University. In retirement, he continued to write short stories, patiently typing his manuscripts on his favorite and trusty IBM electric typewriter. Duane L McGowen – Born March 8, 1936 in Laverne, OK to Virgil &amp; Gertrude McGowen, died August 19, 2023 in Hutchinson, KS. 

He was a graduate of Johnson High School (today’s Stanton County High School), Johnson, KS. After graduation he served in the United States Army for 3 years, then transferred to the United States Airforce serving 4 years and then returned to the United States Army serving 4 more years. He was Honorably Discharged having earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal – 2 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal Device 60, Good Conduct Medal, Sharpshooter (Rifle M-14) and the Parachutist Badge. Duane then moved to Hutchinson where he was a clerk for the United States Postal Service for 25 years. After retirement from USPS, he worked at WalMart for approximately 15 years.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Raymond, Vernon &amp; Patricia McGowen, Juanita Austin, Yvonne Foster &amp; sister-in-law Nadine McGowen.

Survived by his children: Tonya &amp; Darin Gehring, Buhler, Kim &amp; Bill Rupp, Moundridge, Laura &amp; Theodore Dawson, Newton and Jay &amp; William Malone, Hutchinson. Lori Macy, 61, died August 22, 2023, surrounded by her family, at Pleasant View Home, Inman. She was born August 25, 1961, in Temple Hills, MD, to Harry Franklin III and Dorothy Lorraine (Reder) Biery.

Lori, known by her family as “Gordy”, was a homemaker. &nbsp;She was a collector of numerous figurines and passionate about her dogs. &nbsp;Lori had an infectious smile that made everyone around her feel welcomed and loved.

On April 20, 1981, she married Jacky Duane Macy, in Hollis, OK. &nbsp;

Lori is survived by: &nbsp;her husband of 42 years, Jacky Macy of Hutchinson; son, Jeremie Biery (Cassie) of Salina; siblings, Robert Biery, Frank Biery (Serenia), Bud Biery (Kim), all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Julie Moss of Texas, Clay Huff, Kade Biery, and Joey Biery, all of Salina; her best friend for over 23 years, Barbie; numerous nieces and nephews; and her Bluestem Pace family.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son, Brian Keith.

Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 25, 2023, in the Hester Chapel, located at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Richard Joseph Webb III, 73, of Walker, KS, died, Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at his home. He was born December 22, 1949, in Hutchinson, KS to Richard Joseph and Mary Helen (Urban) Webb, Jr. His life partner was Louise Virginia Sheets. They were together for over 20 years until her passing on May 14, 2014.

He was a retired construction foreman and a veteran of the United States Navy. He served during the Vietnam War and received two Purple Hearts and other service medals. Richard grew up in South Hutchinson, KS and attended high school in Nickerson, KS. He has lived in Walker, KS since 1995. Richard was a member of Victoria V.F.W. Post #1751, Military Honor Guard Funeral Detail, and attended St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Walker, KS.

Richard is survived by: his mother, Mary Helen Webb, South Hutchinson, KS; siblings, Catherine Hixon, Patricia (Harlon) Best, Barbara Webb all of Hutchinson, KS, Frances (Robert) Ronnau, Christine Webb-Mikesell, all of Mesa, AZ, Rita (Kris) Carpenter, Colwich, KS, Mary Walker and David Cunningham, Overland Park, KS, David Webb and Daniel Webb, both of South Hutchinson, KS; numerous nieces and nephews.

David W. Snodgrass, 63, of Haven, Kansas passed away Monday, August 14, 2023 at his home. He was born July 6, 1960 in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Dale L. and Barbara (Jacob) Snodgrass.

He graduated from Haven High School with the class of 1978.

David worked as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service and was also a NALC union member for 38 years, retiring in 2017.

He was united in marriage to Cynthia Preisser on June 4, 1983 in St. Joe, Kansas.

He never knew a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Above everything, David loved his children and grandchildren.

David is survived by his wife, Cindy Snodgrass of the home; sons, Jared (Savannah) Snodgrass of Sterling, and Dylan Snodgrass of Haven; three grandchildren, Cody, Penelope, and Jackson Snodgrass of Sterling; two brothers, Jack (Valerie) Snodgrass and John Snodgrass, both of Mt. Hope; and nephew and niece, Jeremy and Nicole.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Joseph D. Snodgrass.

She was a graduate of Buhler High School. Natasha had worked for PRA and most recently for Air Gas, Hutchinson.

She is survived by her dad, Hutchinson; her mother, Hutchinson; 2 daughters, Taylah Mason and Abigail Gordon, Hutchinson; a brother, Brian (Sarah) Glass, Buhler; her paternal grandparents, Gary (Nancy) Peak, Hutchinson; sister-in-law, Courtney Peak, Buhler; aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews; and Abigail’s father, Dustin Gordon.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Josh Peak and her maternal grandparents, Gerald “Buddy” Glass and Peggy Elliott.

Natasha Cole Glass |1987-2023|

Born Monica E. Holland in 1932, to Daniel and Monica Holland of Hutchinson. Monica was raised on her parent’s farm just south of Hutchinson along with her five brothers and one sister. She graduated from St. Teresa High School in 1950, and later married Eugene Dick in 1953, her high school sweetheart. They shared 44 years of marriage before Eugene passed in 1998. They had four children: Kathleen Danks of Hutchinson, Diane Wilks of Wichita, Daniel Dick of Hutchinson, and Durrel Dick of Topeka. She had six grandchildren who she loved: Dustin Danks of Hutchinson, Dannon Danks (Amber) of Hutchinson, Jennifer Shaffer of Topeka, Chelsie Dosch (Wade) of Hutchinson, Jonathan Wilks (Kelsey) of Wichita, and Joseph Wilks of Wichita. Monica also had nine great grandchildren she loved: Eric, Cassie, Kimber, Wyatt, Shayley, Owen, Easton, Declan, and Irelynn.

Monica was a strong supporter of her church, St. Teresa Catholic Church, Hutchinson. Her Family, the Holland’s, were instrumental in helping to build and form the church and school in its early beginnings. Her faith and love for St. Teresa church was unmatched. Monica was well known to her family for preparing feasts for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. She would always cook a great meal for anyone who came to visit on Sunday. Cooking was her specialty and she excelled at it. Monica loved cooking and experimenting with new recipes to which her children and grandchildren were her guinea pigs for her trials. She worked for 60 years as a secretary for a local insurance company before retiring after which she focused more on her family which she loved dearly.

Monica was proceeded in death by: &nbsp;her husband, Eugene Dick; parents, Daniel and Monica Holland; brothers, Edward, Francis, Ben, Richard, Jack; and one sister, Margaret.

She is survived by: her four children, six grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

Heaven has truly gained an angel and a phenomenal cook, she’ll be missed.

Rosary will be 11 am Saturday, August 26, 2023, followed by Mass of Christian Burial, both at St. Teresa Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 am to 8 pm Friday with family present from 5 to 7 pm at Elliott Mortuary.

They had four children: Kathleen Danks of Hutchinson, Diane Wilks of Wichita, Daniel Dick of Hutchinson, and Durrel Dick of Topeka. She had six grandchildren who she loved: Dustin Danks of Hutchinson, Dannon Danks (Amber) of Hutchinson, Jennifer Shaffer of Topeka, Chelsie Dosch (Wade) of Hutchinson, Jonathan Wilks (Kelsey) of Wichita, and Joseph Wilks of Wichita. Monica also had nine great grandchildren she loved: Eric, Cassie, Kimber, Wyatt, Shayley, Owen, Easton, Declan, and Irelynn.Monica was a strong supporter of her church, St. Teresa Catholic Church, Hutchinson. Her Family, the Holland’s, were instrumental in helping to build and form the church and school in its early beginnings. Her faith and love for St. Teresa church was unmatched. Monica was well known to her family for preparing feasts for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. She would always cook a great meal for anyone who came to visit on Sunday. Cooking was her specialty and she excelled at it. Monica loved cooking and experimenting with new recipes to which her children and grandchildren were her guinea pigs for her trials. She worked for 60 years as a secretary for a local insurance company before retiring after which she focused more on her family which she loved dearly.Monica was proceeded in death by: &nbsp;her husband, Eugene Dick; parents, Daniel and Monica Holland; brothers, Edward, Francis, Ben, Richard, Jack; and one sister, Margaret.She is survived by: her four children, six grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.Heaven has truly gained an angel and a phenomenal cook, she’ll be missed.Rosary will be 11 am Saturday, August 26, 2023, followed by Mass of Christian Burial, both at St. Teresa Catholic Church. William Claude Fillingim was gifted to the world on Christmas Day, December 25, 1937. He was&nbsp;the fourth of nine children born to A. E. “Nick” and Elaine (Waters) Fillingim in Pensacola,&nbsp;Florida. His parents and family instilled in him a love of laughter, a desire to learn, and a&nbsp;determination to work hard. He grew up going to church, and when he was 18, he came to a&nbsp;personal relationship with Jesus Christ and was called to be a pastor. This became the&nbsp;driving force of the rest of his life.&nbsp;

After graduating from Pensacola High School, he attended Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky.&nbsp;He graduated with a bachelor’s degree and completed the first year of his seminary&nbsp;degree. At that time, he was eager to go someplace else in the world and get some practical experience. This led him to Bloom, Kansas, where he took his first pastorship at the Bloom United Methodist Church. This opportunity gave him a love for the plains, a love for the people of western Kansas, and, specifically, the love of an amazing woman. &nbsp;He and Anita Lea Esplund were married on August 3, 1963.

After their marriage, Claude and Anita moved to Boston, Massachusetts in order for Claude to&nbsp;finish his master’s degree in theology at Boston University. He obtained the degree, but more&nbsp;importantly, he and Anita welcomed the birth of their first child, Tanya Lea, in September of&nbsp;1964.

On completion of his degree, Claude accepted the pulpit in Bucklin, Kansas, at the United&nbsp;Methodist Church. During their nine years there, he and Anita impacted countless lives. Two&nbsp;children would also be born here: Layne Waters (who died at birth) and Debra Kay.&nbsp; In 1974, the family moved so that Claude could pastor at the United Methodist Church in&nbsp;Kingman, Kansas. Once again, Claude and Anita’s ministry played a major role in shaping the&nbsp;spiritual journey of those in their charge. One more child would be added to the family: David&nbsp;Wesley.

When his time at Kingman was through, rather than go directly to another pulpit, Claude decided to take his family to Campbell, California to seek some training. After eight months it became clear that the Fillingims needed to return to Kansas. They came back to headquarter in&nbsp;Minneola, Kansas for four months before taking charge of the United Methodist Church in&nbsp;Lincoln, Kansas. Claude pastored the church for three years and then decided to pursue his relationship with God in new ways. At first, he and Anita simply led a Bible study. It was not long before that Bible study became the creation of a new church: the Lincoln Christian Fellowship. They would continue to pastor there until 2003. In addition, he traveled extensively with the purpose of ministering to ministers in several countries around the world.

If you can call it retirement, Claude and Anita decided to retire to Thomaston, Georgia in order&nbsp;to be closer to Claude’s siblings. Once again, their ministry took off in powerful ways. They became part-time caterers and Bible study leaders. They turned their home into a spiritual oasis for all who entered.

The desire to be near to grandchildren (Tanya’s kids: Aaron and Kaylea) drew Claude and Anita back to Kansas. They returned to Kingman in 2012. Once again, they threw themselves into ministry: hosting Bible studies, catering events, and meeting the needs of those who came across their path.

Anita graduated to heaven in 2015. Claude had loved her with all his heart, but he also knew he&nbsp;had more love to give. It wasn’t long before he realized he desired a companion. His friendship&nbsp;with Pat (Sayles), whom he had officially known since 1974, turned into love. He married this&nbsp;amazing woman in the summer of 2017. They set up home in Hutchinson, Kansas. Their love was both precious and profound.

Claude departed this life on the evening of Saturday, August 19, 2023, in his home. He is&nbsp;preceded in death by his parents (A. E. and Elaine Fillingim), his first wife (Anita Esplund&nbsp;Fillingim), a child (Layne Waters Fillingim), and four siblings (Archie “Nick” Fillingim Jr., Janice&nbsp;Henderson, Ralph Fillingim, and Margaret Davis).&nbsp;

He is survived by his second wife (Pat Fillingim), three children and their spouses (Tanya and David Hein, Debra and Darin Raffety, and David and Erica Fillingim), two grandchildren (Aaron Hein and Kaylea Hein), four siblings and their spouses (Charles and Diane Fillingim of Pensacola, Florida, Robert and Linda Fillingim of Robertsdale, Alabama, James and Kay Fillingim of Daphne, Alabama, and Sharon and George Erickson of Pensacola, Florida), several in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends. His was a life well-lived.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 26, 2023, at First Congregational Church, 3410 N. Plum, Hutchinson, with Pastor Matt Stafford officiating. Graveside service will be at 3:00 p.m. in the Appleton Township Cemetery, Minneola, KS. &nbsp;Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Ruth Ann Heinrichs, 76, died peacefully amongst her family on August 20, 2023, in her home in Hesston, Kansas. Ruth accepted the Lord as her savior when she was a child and knew her eternal home was in Heaven.

Ruth was born on January 9, 1946, in Cordell, Oklahoma, the daughter of Paul Richert, a farmer and rancher, and Hilda Friesen Richert, a teacher. She graduated from Weatherford High School in Oklahoma and then earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1967, followed by a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Administration from Fort Hays State University.

Ruth married Dennis Heinrichs in 1967. A year later, Ruth and Dennis moved to Larned, Kansas. She was very active in the lives of her sons, Jeff and Greg, and made lifelong memories with picnics in the park, feeding the ducks, helping with 4-H projects at county and state fairs, watching them play sports, listening to their music concerts, and going on annual vacations to the mountains of Colorado. Always one to place a high value on education, Ruth was incredibly proud when Jeff and Greg each earned advanced degrees after graduating college.

Being Gramma was a role Ruth approached with love and took seriously. She maximized the time she spent with her five grandkids, Casey, Emmah, Aaron, Josie, and Toby, and taught them to read and do math. Her grandkids knew her favorite multiplication problem of 7x8 because 56, 7, 8. The grandkids also learned from Gramma valuable life skills like cooking, sewing, cleaning, playing with a yo-yo, winning card games, and getting dirty while playing hard.

She spoiled her grandkids and created special memories for each of them. She knew each grandkid’s food preferences and went to great lengths to give them all exactly what they wanted, even within the same meal. This often meant having four different kinds of mustard, chocolate chip cookies with and without nuts, and up to seven kinds of ice cream with chocolate syrup, chocolate sprinkles, and “shoom” – Cool Whip to the rest of the world. Once a new name for something was coined by a grandkid, Ruth used it for life. She was also fond of going to Dairy McQueen for hangaburgers and the grandkids knew there would be extra goo (icing) in a separate bowl served with a family breakfast favorite, bubble loaf.

Ruth took pride in her home and used it as a display of love for her family. Every wall was covered with framed artwork made by Jeff and Greg in grade school and the grandkids. While Ruth kept her home clean, there was one exception. Ruth considered the handprints and fingerprints of her grandkids on the windows to be valuable reminders of what she loved most. Those stayed on the windows while the rest of the house was cleaned and restocked with the grandkids’ favorite things so she was ready for the next time grandchildren came to visit.

Ruth devoted her professional career to educating students. Her first job was teaching 3rd graders in Hillsboro, Kansas. After her first day, she said, “I used up everything I learned in college in the first 20 minutes.” That first day at Suncrest Elementary, as rough as it may have been, was the first of several thousand more days working in schools during her life. Thousands of people who went through the Hillsboro, Larned, and Great Bend school systems are better mathematicians and readers because of Ruth’s work. Many of them, including Greg, also chose a career in education thanks to Ruth.

She taught different grades at Larned’s four elementary schools with most of her time spent teaching Kindergarten. She was the teacher that Larned’s students wanted to get because she engaged students and made learning fun. She was also sought by parents because they knew their children would be loved and taught by one of the best.

Ruth did not just impact the lives of children. She changed the lives of her colleagues. She was proud of being the first female teacher in the Larned School District to wear pants – a violation of the school district’s dress code at the time. Soon after her daring clothing choice, the Board of Education changed its policy to better accommodate all women in the district.

Retirement was a blessing because it allowed Ruth and Dennis more time to travel; a passion they shared even in the final weeks of her life. They visited Yellowstone, Glacier, Arches, and Grand Canyon National Parks. The family celebrated Ruth and Dennis’ 50th wedding anniversary in Alaska. Ruth also made stops in Canada, Mexico, Germany, Italy, and France.

Ruth is survived by her husband Dennis; son Jeff, his wife Becky and their children Emmah and Aaron of New Port Richey, Florida; son Greg, his wife Jennea and their children Casey, Josie, and Toby of Hesston, Kansas; brother Jim and his wife Lynda, of Clinton, Oklahoma; brother Steve and his wife Lisa of Mangum, Oklahoma; sister-in-law Kristin of Denver, Colorado; and six nieces and nephews and their families.

Ruth is preceded in death by her father, Paul Richert, her mother Hilda Friesen Richert, her father-in-law Allen Heinrichs, and her mother-in-law Kathryn Heinrichs.

Irene (Dean) McColm, age 97, passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 surrounded by love.&nbsp; 

She was born in Wichita, Kansas on May 26, 1926 to D. Claude and Verda E. (Heath) Dean.&nbsp; She attended Wichita schools and was a graduate of North High School.&nbsp; On August 30 1946 she married William McColm. He preceded her in death on May 5, 1995.&nbsp; Irene worked at Boeing Aircraft and then retired from Graphic Screen Printing.&nbsp; She and her sister Fran volunteered for 17 years at the American Red Cross and were volunteers of the year in 2009.

Irene is survived by her brother Earl (Carleen) Dean, son Curt (Nadine) McColm, daughter-in-law Lori McColm, niece Earlene Miracle, caregiver Ashley Brown, 3 granddogs, other family and friends.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son Steve McColm, sister Fran Gentry and niece Shelli Willis.

Francis “Lee” Nichols (Papaw), owner of Lee Nichols Trucking, passed away Saturday, August 19, 2023 at the age of 80 in Wichita, Kansas.

Lee Nichols was born May 5, 1943 in Wellington, KS to Walter and Mary Nichols (Davis). &nbsp;During his childhood he moved with his family between Missouri and Kansas. &nbsp;Settling in Wichita, Kansas until he with his wife, children, and grandchildren moved outside of Bentley, Kansas in 1985.&nbsp;

On June 24, 1963 he married Glenda Eaton (Wichita), until her passing on December 28, 1999. &nbsp;Francis married Loree Chadbourn (Sedgwick) on July 3, 2003. &nbsp;

He was preceded in death by first wife Glenda, second wife Loree, parents Walter and Mary, and son Darren Nichols. &nbsp;

He is survived by his daughter Rhonda Lane, son Aaron Nichols, daughter in-law Derrial, grandchildren Travis (Kelly) Lane, Jared Nichols, Blake (Robyn) Nichols, 2 great-grandchildren, many family and friends. &nbsp;

Lee could always be found tinkering in his shop, mowing lawns, or talking about his family and past. &nbsp;Lee was a proud trucker driver and outside of his family, owning his own company (Lee Nichols Trucking) was his biggest accomplishment.&nbsp;

Lee enjoyed fishing, playing cards, singing and writing songs, and playing his guitar with his grandson and nephew, having coffee with friends, trips to the casino, caring for animals, and taking car rides. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Church.

A funeral for both Lee and Loree will be at Pleasant Valley Church, 12002 W 109th Street, Sedgwick, KS on August 25, 2023. &nbsp;Burial services will take place at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Goddard, KS following. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Loree Renee (Chadbourn) Nichols died unexpectedly from injuries sustained in a car accident on&nbsp;Friday, August 11, 2023 at the age of 67 in Wichita, Kansas.

Loree was survived by her husband Francis Lee Nichols for one week until he followed her in&nbsp;death due to his injuries sustained in the same car accident. She is survived by her sisters, Paula&nbsp;Fuoss (Jim) West Chicago, IL, Janelle Case (Ray), Manhattan, KS, Michelle Mundhenk (Kent),&nbsp;Granbury, TX, Beth Breen (Doug), Tucson, AZ, step-daughter Rhonda Lane, Sedgwick, KS,&nbsp;step-son Aaron Nichols, Sedgwick, KS and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews,&nbsp;step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a&nbsp;brother, Marlin Chadbourn, her parents Kenneth and Maxine Chadbourn, her grandparents and a&nbsp;niece, Alicia (Mundhenk) Zebutis as well as her step-son, Darren Nichols.&nbsp;

Loree was born on March 18, 1956 to Kenneth and Maxine Chadbourn in Arkansas City, Kansas.&nbsp;She graduated from Atchison High School in 1974 and from Calvary Bible College with a degree&nbsp;in Elementary Education in 1979. She married Francis Lee Nichols on July 3, 2003 in Sedgwick,&nbsp;Kansas.&nbsp;

Loree loved children and it was evident when it came to her nieces and nephews. She loved&nbsp;keeping up with them and supporting them the best she could as they grew. She also spent many&nbsp;years teaching children’s Sunday School. Loree was diagnosed early in life with diabetes and&nbsp;fought through many setbacks throughout her life but now lives pain free/diabetes free in heaven&nbsp;with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was passionate about music and loved picking out&nbsp;hymns and playing the organ for Sunday morning services at Pleasant Valley Church where she&nbsp;was the Music Director for the past several years. She also had recently begun a ministry in&nbsp;reaching out as an encourager to single females at Pleasant Valley.

Max D. Miller, 72, died August 17, 2023, at his home. &nbsp;He was born July 23, 1951, in Newton, KS, to Maurice Gene and Evelyn Nadine (Hughes) Miller.

Max was a 1969 graduate of Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;He was a baker at Betts Rainbo Bakery, Hutchinson, KS, retiring with over 20 years of service. &nbsp;Max then worked as a technician for the City of Hutchinson at the Waste Water Treatment Plant. &nbsp;He enjoyed all genres of music and it did not matter who the performing artist was.

On November 13, 1982, Max married Priscilla ‘Beth’ Elizabeth Sharlow, at Westside Baptist Church, Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;They shared over 40 years of marriage.

Max is survived by: &nbsp;his wife, Beth Miller of Hutchinson, KS; sons, Levi (Shannon) Short of Gardner, KS, and Joey (Kelli) Short of Hutchinson, KS; grandchildren, Ethan Short, Colby Short, Bélynn Short, Sage Short, and Ethan Carter; sisters, Nancy Johnson of Hutchinson, KS, Loretta (Joel) Miller of Scottsdale, AZ, and Brenda Miller of Phoenix, AZ; niece, Kara Johnson of Boulder, CO; and nephew, Radimir Blickenstaff of Scottsdale, AZ. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents.

David L. Longstreth, 72, passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;He was born September 16, 1950 in Kansas, the son of Lawrence E. &amp; Edna Mae (Nace) Longstreth.

David graduated with his GED in 1975 and attended The University of Saint Mary’s in Leavenworth, KS. On July 11, 1998, he married Pam R. Popp in Buhler, KS. &nbsp;He worked in the plumbing industry for many years and his favorite hobby was gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Pam; son, David Longstreth and stepson, Adam Popp; daughter, Tracy Williams; and two grandchildren, Brandon, and Brittney.

He is preceded by his parents, Lawrence and Edna; and six siblings, Dale Longstreth, Karen Cole, Connie Rader, Mark Longstreth, David Luman, and Dana Longstreth.

Cremation has been chosen and services are pending. Hutchinson Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Justin L. Vajnar 51, died Saturday, August 19, 2023, at his Newton residence. He was born April 21, 1972, in Newton, Kansas to Lynn and Connie (Klein) Vajnar. On June 26, 2004, he married Melissa McGee at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton, and she survives.

Just was a supervisor for the City of Newton Water Department.

Justin is survived by his wife Melissa of the home; son Jake Vajnar; parents Lynn and Connie Vajnar and sister Jennifer Vajnar.

Funeral service will 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 26, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church at 901 Columbus in Newton with The Reverend Scott McGinnis and Pastor Tony Johnson presiding. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton.

 </figure>Harold E. Pauls, 97, passed away on August 10, 2023, in Moundridge, KS. He was born on December 5, 1925, in Moundridge, Kansas. Harold was involved in the Mid-Kansas Co-op and dedicated his life to farming on his land just outside of Inman. He was a hardworking individual who took great pride in his work. Harold attended Moundridge High School, where he received his education. He was a member of the Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church, where he worshipped and often volunteered to serve his community. Services for Harold will be held on Friday, September 1, 2023, at Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church. The graveside service will take place at 10:00 a.m., followed by a service at 10:30 a.m. A reception lunch will be served immediately after the service. Harold is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Pauls, whom he married in 1953. Harold and Virginia celebrated 70 years of marriage together.
