HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The unemployment rate fell in Reno County in the month of September as jobs continued to return following the pandemic shutdown. 

The rate is down to 5.2%. It was 6.6% in August. 1,577 people are out of work and looking for it in the county.

Hutchinson's unemployment rate also declined from 7.5% in August to 5.9%. 1,133 people are out of work and looking for it in the city.

The state's unemployment rate was also down from 6.9% in August to 5.9% in September.

With the anticipated move to the red zone for gating criteria and remote learning next week, meals will still be available. The new service begins Monday, Oct. 19. There is one meal pickup with five days of meals (breakfast and lunch) for the week.

·       Students encouraged to pick up meals at their enrolled school. Families with middle school or high school students in addition to an elementary student can pick up all meals at the elementary school.  

·       Students will receive breakfast and lunch for five days.

·       Parents can have a representative pick up meals for them if they are unable to. Older students are also able to pick up meals. 

·       Meal service pick up times on Monday: 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.; 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; or 3 to 3:30 p.m.

Tillman was chosen as the nation’s 12th Presidential Pilot and served as commander of Air Force One for eight years under President George W. Bush. The retired colonel was responsible for “the flying White House” throughout both of Bush’s terms and has edge-of-your-seat stories to share about keeping the President safe on Sept. 11, 2001, and clandestinely flying the President in and out of Iraq on Thanksgiving 2003.

Exoneree, journalist, public speaker, and author of the New York Times best-selling memoir, “Waiting to Be Heard”, Amanda Knox was originally scheduled to speak November 17 but has been rescheduled to April 6, 2021. Between 2007 and 2015, Knox spent nearly four years in an Italian prison and eight years on trial for a murder she didn’t commit. She now works to shed light on the issues of wrongful conviction, truth seeking, and public shaming, and to inspire people towards empathy and perspective.

Fall Dillon Lectures rescheduled for spring

Kan. — American Legion National Commander James W. "Bill" Oxford will be at American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68 at 730 West 4th in Hutchinson at 9:45 a.m. on Monday, October 26th.

Oxford was elected national commander of The American Legion on Aug. 29, 2019, in Indianapolis, during the organization's 101st national convention. He has been a member of the nation's largest veterans organization since 1986.

A native of Lenoir, N.C., Oxford is a paid-up-for-life member and past commander of Post 29 in Lenoir. He served as department (state) commander of the North Carolina American Legion from 2010 to 2011. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Oxford was an aviation electronic technician for the A-6 Intruder and served in Vietnam during his initial enlistment. After being discharged as a sergeant in 1970, Oxford joined the North Carolina National Guard.  He subsequently attended officer's candidate school and transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve, where he ultimately retired as a colonel after more than 34 years of military service.

Oxford has served at every level of The American Legion.  The public is encouraged to attend on the 26th. Coffee and treats will be served.

American Legion National Commander to visit Hutchinson October 26

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT), has revised its list of public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae. Camp Hawk Lake in Harvey County is now in a warning status.

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:  

Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.  

Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.  

Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.  

If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.  

Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation. 

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.  

Kansans should be aware that blooms are unpredictable. They can develop rapidly and may float around the lake, requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment. If there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

229 of the current cases are in the community. 1543 people have tested positive overall, with 1181 recovered. Nine have died. 

There were only four deaths total announced from the beginning of the pandemic to October 7 in Reno County. Five have been announced from October 8 to October 15.

There are eleven active clusters. 11,022 people have been tested, with 9,479 negatives for an overall positive test rate of 14% and a community positive test rate of 10.21%. 17.54% of the population has been tested.

There are 13 people currently in the hospital. 65 have been hospitalized throughout the pandemic in Reno County. 31 of those needed ICU care. Eight were intubated.

The Reno County Health Department was notified by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment that a ninth local resident with laboratory confirmed COVID-19 has passed away.

Out of respect for the family, the Reno County Health Department will not release any further information about this individual.

Please be vigilant by washing your hands, social distance by at least six feet or more, wear a mask when you are in public places and stay at home if you are not feeling well. 

It is very important that people continue to follow the guidelines to help decrease the spread of COVID-19.

Ninth COVID-19 death reported Thursday

Kan. —&nbsp;Dr. Rex Degner with Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System notes that the personnel situation for healthcare workers isn't the same as it was when the hospital made its initial plan about how it would deal with a surge in COVID-19 cases.

"We developed a large surge plan back in the spring that we could handle a very significant number of COVID patients at any one time, up to 40 or 50 if we really had to," Degner said. "That was back in a time when our census was very low because people were not coming in for their other health care. Now they are. We still have a plan to handle a significant number of COVID patients, our problem is, we do not have as many staff that we could draw on."

The idea was that if necessary, medical staff from the clinics in town could have been pressed into service. Now, they are busy with their own clientele.

"We don't want to have to take the step of saying, if you have an elective surgery, maybe we should be putting that off til a later date, so that we can take care of the most acute things that are going on right now," Degner said. "We are not at that point yet, but we are brushing up against it, to a degree."

It's always a concern that a healthcare worker might catch the virus out in the community, but infection control measures appear to be working inside the hospital itself.

"To our knowledge, we've not had a known spread within the hospital as far as someone catching it from a patient or from a healthcare worker to another healthcare worker within our walls," Degner said.

The Reno County Correctional Facility has identified six active presumptive COVID-19 positives, according to a release from Sheriff Darrian Campbell. 

The first case was identified and tested when minor symptoms were reported to medical staff. It is not known how the initial inmate contracted the virus. Additional testing will be administered as symptoms are reported to medical staff.

One deputy employed at the facility has also been identified as a presumptive positive. There is no reason to believe the deputy was infected at work. One other employee has been isolated due to close contact.

Interaction between inmates and employees is being limited. Masks are required if there is to be contact. Common areas are cleaned and sanitized regularly and screening precautions are being taken to be sure those with symptoms are not being house with those without.

All programs within the facility have been halted temporarily to minimize movement.

Six COVID-19 cases identified in Reno County Correctional Facility

Kan. —&nbsp;The Health Order that went into effect Wednesday limiting gatherings to 100 people or fewer has so many exceptions that it is largely just to make people think again rather than to force much of anything to stop.

"The intent was to really have people understand that we do have a problem in Reno County," said Interim Health Officer Karen Hammersmith. "We need to really step back and start looking at what are we doing that's not helping the cause?"

About two-thirds of the active cases in Reno County are not connected to Hutchinson Correctional Facility.

"We do not want to shut down businesses," Hammersmith said. "We know what happened in March. We know the economy can not handle those types of things. The exceptions are really put in place, so that, as long as you social distance, we can really work with you."

It's not a new message, but it's still a needed message.

"You have COVID fatigue," Hammersmith said. "It's like, you've been saying this since March, that we have a problem, you've been saying to do all of these things. They're tired of wearing their masks, they're tired of hearing about wearing a mask, they're tired of people telling them to stay at home. Washing their hands, hopefully no one's ever going to be tired of that, and the social distancing. All of those things have to continue, but now we're to the point where this is really getting to be a problem."

The order will remain in effect until rescinded.

Kan. — Following a long career as Director of Reno County Youth Services, Bill Hermes announced his retirement, effective December 23, 2020.

Hermes began his career in Reno County in 1989 as the Assistant Director of Youth Services, and has been in the role of Director since 1992. Prior to working for Reno County, he was the Death, Dying and Bereavement Counselor for Hospice of Reno County.

Hermes credits his years of success to surrounding himself with many great people. In his years as director, he hired and retained 42 employees that have accumulated over 600 years of experience. Hermes states, "I will be leaving the Department of Youth Services in very capable hands. I have spent the past several years training and assigning people to the right positions to carry on the successful legacy of the department."

County Administrator Randy Partington noted, "Bill has been a great leader for Reno County, and made Youth Services a model department for others in the State of Kansas. Bill’s leadership along with that of his staff have made positive changes to the lives of the youth that have been served at the detention center and the shelter."

Hermes attended Hutchinson Community College and Fort Hays State University where he earned a bachelor's in Sociology and a minor in Psychology in 1985. He then attained a master's in Counseling from Fort Hays State University in 1987. As for plans post retirement, Hermes hopes to take a few months off to relax before pursuing other interests. A public reception will be planned at a later date.

In the 84-year history of the Concert Association, the only other season to be cancelled was during World War 2, 1943-1944.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Organizers made the tough decision Thursday morning to cancel the 11th Annual Pumpkinaries.

The event, hosted by <a href="https://www.khmyfm.com/">My 93-1</a> with the help of Allen Samuels and Rise Up Reno, was scheduled for Oct. 23 at 30th and Lorraine.

In an attempt to socially distance, the plan was to show a drive-in movie at Allen Samuels and give away treat bags.

This would have been the 11th year for the event that is typically held in the south lawn at the My 93-1 studios.

Reno County remains in the orange alert level as an overall county for COVID-19, but the school gating criteria is in the red.

According to the situation report that comes out three times a week and was released on Wednesday, there were 344 active cases in the county. That number was down to 340 as of Wednesday evening. 

The 14-day positive test rate is at 17.3% and the 14-day new case count is 250, both would put the county in the red of the school gating criteria.

Ten people are currently hospitalized. Sixty-two have been hospitalized since the beginning of the outbreak. Of those 62, 31 have been in the ICU and eight have been intubated. Eight people have died.

Reno County is up to 17.45% of the population tested as of Wednesday evening. More testing is taking place. There were 139 completed tests at Salt City Splash Tuesday. A testing date is happening Thursday at the Sports Arena west parking lot from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Enter through the 11th Street entrance. You can be tested whether you have symptoms or not, but you need to have an appointment to be tested.

The next testing date is Saturday at Haven High School from 10 a.m. to noon. Call 844-834-3657 to make an appointment.&nbsp;

More community testing improves the positive test rate as well as identifies early COVID-19 cases, which prevents future transmission to others. Robust testing is a key to keeping schools open.

School gating criteria preliminary numbers in red zone

Four people were taken by EMS to be checked out Tuesday night after an accident in Reno County. 

The sheriff's office says a 68-year-old woman from Penalosa hit a farm implement being pulled by a tractor heading east driven by a 25-year-old man from Arlington in the 22400 block of West Pretty Prairie Road just before 8 p.m. 

The driver and her three passengers, all Reno County women, were buckled up. The driver of the tractor was not hurt.

Tuesday night accident sends four to hospital

Kan. —&nbsp;Kansas Governor Laura Kelly toured Yoder Meats Wednesday afternoon. The processor was a recipient of a $100,000 Securing Local Food Systems grant.

"We know how important it is to not only protect the beginning of the process, but the whole supply chain process," Kelly said. "That's what Yoder Meats is and that's what the other recipients of this particular grant are getting."

Chad Bontrager with Yoder Meats says this will help them weather the peaks and valleys of production better.

"It's going to give us the opportunity to expand our cold storage capacity here at the Yoder facility, more than double what we currently have," Bontrager said. "This lets us do a couple of things. One, stockpile inventory during slower times that we can use to meet peak demand and then also, that's kind of the first step in a long-term plan to increase overall production."

The problem for Yoder Meats was never animals to process, just the space to get it done.

"The small plants we have, nearly 90 of them across Kansas, their business just really skyrocketed and they were having trouble keeping up with demand," said Agriculture Secretary Mike Beam. "The primary factor in capacity is some of the equipment."

Krehbiel's Specialty Meats in McPherson also recieved a $100,000 grant from the program. Grazing Plains Farm in Whitewater got $50,000, Mark's Meats in Halstead received $60,000 and the Prairy Market &amp; Deli in Newton received $75,000.

In order to comply with the Reno County Health Order #20-03, the Reno County Museum has altered the “Boo”seum Spook Walk.

The Reno County Museum will no longer hold the “Boo”seum Spook Walk as planned. However, we feel it is important to our community, especially the children in our community, to have something to look forward to and provide even a small sense of normalcy during this difficult time. Our team has worked hard to alter the Spook Walk in a way that we could easily be in compliance with the Reno County Health Order and still provide a safe, fun, and socially distanced Halloween experience for families in Reno County.

The Spook Walk has changed to the Reno County Museum “Boo-Thru.” This will be set up at the east courtyard entrance to the Museum. Families may pull up in our parking lot, roll down the windows, and show us your costumes while giving us your best boos, roars, and monster sounds! We will give each child a bag of candy without the need for anyone to exit their vehicles! 

Staff and volunteers will be wearing the necessary PPE and social distancing for their safety and the safety of others.

There is no cost to participate in the “Boo–Thru.” We feel that this small act will serve as something positive for the children in our community during such an uncertain time and we hope the “Boo-Thru” can provide a little fun and excitement in spite of the uncertainties we are all facing together.

The “Boo–Thru” will run from 5:30–8:30 p.m. or until supplies run out. Please always remain in your vehicles. A sealed bag of candy will be given to each child in the vehicle.

TOPEKA, Kan. – A man and woman who are in custody in Topeka were indicted today on federal charges of robbing three Kansas businesses, including one in Hutchinson. 

U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said 29-year-old Lekeith Markez Mosley of Liberal and 25-year-old Shelbi Paige Ricks of Liberal are alleged to have robbed the Subway at 711 North Main in Hutchinson on September 6, the Family Dollar at 303 East Kansas in Greensburg on September 7 and the Jimmy John's at 1025 SW Wanamaker in Topeka on September 27 of this year.

If convicted of the three counts of robbery, they could face up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000 on each count.

Kan. —&nbsp;Jenna Fager with the Reno County election office says many more advance ballots are going out this time than do in a typical election year.

"We're going to be sending out around 8300," Fager said. "Normally, I think in 2016, we sent around a little over 800. That's quite an increase."

Fager said just wait for your ballot to come in the mail if you have applied, but once you have it, vote and get it sent back. You can still apply for an advance ballot until October 27.

"Let's say you aren't comfortable with putting it back into the mail, we will have drop boxes, as well," Fager said.  "The one at the Reno County Annex is by the front door there and that will be open 24 hours a day. We will also have one available at the Buhler City Office and at the Nickerson City Office."

The ones at the city offices will only be available when those offices are open. If you choose to drop off your advance ballot instead of mailing, it must be in the box by 7 p.m. on election night. If you mail the ballot, it must have a valid postmark on or before Election Day and be received by the office by the Friday following the election.

Kan. — Buhler High graduate Riley Dreher spent his summer as a Hot Shot firefighter working for the federal government fighting wildfires.

"We're typically going direct," Dreher said. "We're removing fuel from the fire. Going direct, next to the flames, cutting down trees, scraping it down to bare earth. As you're seeing in these fires in California the flame lengths that are being put off in this high timber country is quite immense, so we have to make, basically a big box."

"To be safe is to be physically fit," Dreher said. "We do two weeks of training for the summer. The first day we show up. It's like a fifteen mile run. Then we're hiking with 45 pounds of gear, trying to climb like two to three thousand vertical feet. We do that five times a week, try to push 40 to 50 miles, try to get ourselves ready to go and in shape."

Dreher does 15,000 to 22,000 steps a day and at the height of fire season, he and the 22 person crew he works with are on 16 hour days for two straight weeks.

"I was in a training position in California this summer," Dreher said. "Part of my task was to go ahead of my crew and scout. Work with a ship, cool it down and flag a line for us that would be efficient and we could corral this fire quickly. That day I walked over 30,000 steps and my watch said 22 miles hiked and that was with all my gear, working with a ship, tying in with my crew. I kind of sat down at the end of my shift, took my boots off and I was like, man, this is definitely one for the books and I definitely want to use my brain, not my back, pretty soon."

Dreher plans to do one more summer of firefighting before heading off to chiropractic school. He has already graduated from Wichita State.
