Kan. —&nbsp;Now that school is getting underway, it's important for students of all ages to know the resources they have available at the Hutchinson Public Library.

"We have extended our hours on the wi-fi," said Charlene Childs - Reference Services Assistant Supervisor. "People can actually access the wi-fi from our parking lot in the evening even while we're closed. Those people who do not have wi-fi can access it if they need to."

The extended wi-fi hours outside of the building are from 6:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. It's also possible to get an internet connection to take home for a short period from the library through a mobile hotspot.

"We do have hotspots that are available for one week checkout," said Darcie Canfield-Riggs - Youth Services Librarian. "We have been providing those for a couple of years now. They're very popular. We have a list of people that put them on hold to check out each week. They're through T-Mobile."

There are also still computers in the library to use.

"We have fourteen on the public services side that are available," Canfield-Riggs said. "We have seven on the children's services side reserved for children to use daily."

The library is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. The library is closed on Sunday.

"We do have our services mostly available that we had before," Canfield-Riggs said. "You can check out books. You can check out DVDs, audiobooks, magazines. In the children's department, we have what are called vox books, which are read along books that have a player inside of them, so someone reads the story to you while you're reading the book."

For those who need to do more in-depth research, there are people there to teach you.

"We do have the databases that you can access from home," said Amanda Stephenson - Reference Services Supervisor. "We have researchers that are there to help students learn how to do the databases, as well as printing of articles. We have the archives, where we can get historical magazines and access older materials and we can also do interlibrary loan of materials from other libraries."

The library is also looking to continue to work with the youngest learners.

"Currently, I'm not going out to daycares and preschools, but I have in the past to do story times, said Amy Johnson - Children's Outreach Coordinator. "I am offering a virtual option for daycares and preschools and then I also offer for daycares, delivering books to them monthly so that they have books so that if they can't come in here, I take the books to them."

All you need to access all of these resources is a library card.

"They can come in to the library and bring a current picture identification with proof of address," Childs said. "Even if their license has a different address on it, if they are living here, if they can bring something with their current address that's been through the mail with them, they can come in and get a free library card."

As a result of a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, a guidance document will be forthcoming from the state's Human Rights Commission that the Kansas Act Against Discrimination’s employment, housing, and public accommodation anti-discrimination provisions for “sex” are inclusive of LGBTQ and all derivates of “sex”.

Also on the agenda is a featured neighborhood report from Adam Stewart, an update on the CDBG Grant for the Creekside neighborhood an update on code enforcement and an update on COVID-19 and its effect on housing issues.

Housing commission to discuss discrimination policy Wednesday

Kan. —&nbsp;As one of two doctors running for the United States Senate this fall in Kansas, Democrat Barbara Bollier wanted to draw a clear line between herself and Republican Roger Marshall in a Hutchinson appearance Friday.

"We need non-partisan leaders who will just put all the politics aside and really focus on what matters to Kansans," Bollier said. "I have a long standing record of doing exactly that and actually getting things done for Kansans."

The biggest thing she wants to do is make healthcare more affordable.

"I will absolutely support doing everything we can to get expanded and affordable and accessible healthcare to the people," Bollier said.

With that said, she is not for a Bernie Sanders style solution.

"I very much support having the option to have private health insurance," Bollier said. "That will be maintained, but I want people to have a public option buy in alternative."

The former Republican from Mission Hills changed parties in December of 2018.

Reno County Health Department in collaboration with the Reno County School Superintendents and the Hutchinson Clinic have worked together to adapt the School Gating Criteria for Reno County put forth by Kansas Department of Health and Environment and Kansas Department of Education to be utilized by local testing metrics.

Reno County school districts will be utilizing the school gating criteria guide with a 14-day positive test rate (PTR) metric based on the population of Reno County.

In order to get an accurate 14-day positive testing rate for Reno County, we need to test 3.6% of the population every month. An accurate positive testing rate will tell us what is going on in our community with both symptomatic (those who are COVID-19 positive and have symptoms) and asymptomatic (those who are COVID-19 positive but do not have any symptoms) patients. Asymptomatic patients pose a threat to the vulnerable populations in our community, as the virus can be spread without ever identifying the carrier.

We know we have community spread within Reno County. What we need to know is how far out the spread is in order to maintain our goal to keep our schools and community safely open. Community wide testing will help us have a much clearer picture.

Currently, the Hutchinson Clinic, Prairie Star Health Center and Hutchinson Regional Medical Center are testing patients for COVID-19 in our community. The Reno County Health Department is working on grant funding that will be utilized for communitywide testing that will be open to the public. Planning for communitywide testing has been on the radar from Public Health Emergency Preparedness staff and preliminary plans are already set in motion.

Please continue to be vigilant by washing your hands, social distance by at least six feet or more, wear a mask when you are in public places and stay at home if you are not feeling well. It is very important that people continue to follow the guidelines to help decrease the spread of COVID-19.

Reno County Health Department issues release on gating criteria plan

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two Hutchinson organizations have been awarded more than $137,000 in grants to provide services for victims of crime.&nbsp;

BrightHouse will receive $61,293 to provide a secure and controlled environment in which supervised family visits and monitored child exchanges may occur. The shelter will also receive an additional $45,554 to provide victim-centered, trauma informed domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy services.&nbsp;

Horizons Mental Health Center will also see funding from the state. The mental health center will get $24,890 to provide services for victims of crime and teach prevention skills for children in school that are vulnerable to abuse or maltreatment and an additional $5,400 for operating expenditures for children’s advocacy centers.

The awards were made from the Protection from Abuse Fund, the State Child Exchange and Visitation Centers Fund and the Children’s Advocacy Centers Fund.&nbsp;

"The test gives you a result based on that certain point in time," Stoecklein said. "If you and I got tested right now and we were both negative and then I stopped at a store on the way back to campus, I could be exposed and become a positive."

Because of that, the college is limiting testing to those who are ill.

"When we have someone who may be symptomatic, it's been advised of us that the tests should be saved for those who are symptomatic and so that's kind of the protocol that we are following and the steps we're taking," Stoecklein said. 

According to the COVID-19 dashboard for Reno County, there are four active cases in the higher education cluster as of Friday morning.

No plan for campus-wide testing of students at Hutch CC despite activity

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair may be canceled for the year but patrons who enjoy some of the things you can buy at the fair will get that chance starting September 11th.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture’s, From the Land of Kansas, and its member companies will be exhibiting in a virtual state fair-like experience, September 11-20, to showcase Kansas products.

The virtual experience, called Purple Ribbon Marketplace, will feature special deals like half-off shipping, as well as fun and interactive opportunities to learn about Kansas agriculture businesses and the stories behind them. KDA created a Facebook group, and launched it on August 28 to begin sharing the stories about its members before product sales begin on September 11.

Since the cancellation of the Kansas State Fair due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program wanted to find an alternative way to showcase these Kansas businesses and offer consumers the opportunity to purchase local products.

“This will be an easy way for these businesses to remain connected with consumers so they can enjoy high-quality food and unique products and share with their family and friends,” Janelle Dobbins, From the Land of Kansas program director said. “This virtual format will allow for more interaction, and, of course, the special state fair offers we all love.”

A variety of Kansas products will be offered through the Purple Ribbon Marketplace including popcorn, cheese, sunflower oil, coffee, spice and dip mixes, sauerkraut, and honey. A local distillery will also be selling their hand sanitizer.

KDA to offer fair goodies in special event

"This is an opportunity for volunteers to help nonprofits who just don't have the capacity to make repairs, paint, get things done that are much needed at their organization," said United Way Executive Director Lisa Gleason. "We have about 200 volunteers who are going to be helping with projects all over Reno County."

The Community Work Day will look different as the annual breakfast will not happen due to the pandemic.

"We had to make some adjustments, certainly, to make sure that we are keeping people safe and providing a good environment for people to come and work in," Gleason said. "Usually, we have about 600. We do about 30 projects. We purposely pared down the projects this year so that we could keep them mainly outside, mainly being able to social distance."

The Community Work Day precedes United Way of Reno County’s kick off of the annual fundraising campaign.

"One of the main things that we made the decision on, is we would not be combining any teams this year, which we usually do," Gleason said. "We usually do about five Brush Up Hutch houses, helping elderly and disabled who can't paint their own houses, but they're such big projects, you usually have to combine teams to get them done. We made the choice not to do that, so we're only going to be painting two houses this year."

These volunteers will paint those houses for Brush Up Hutch, clean up Carey Park, work at the Boys and Girls Club, paint at TECH and work on the Early Education Center among other projects.

Recent obituaries

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — While there has been some interest according to a realtor offering the property, Cottonwood Hills remains up for sale.

The golf course, which has been closed since October, is still in the ownership of Apex Bank of Tennessee. The bank has been in ownership of the course off and on for several years after buying it in foreclosure. Park Partners of Wichita suspended operations of the course in October stating that the lack of ownership commitment was a major reason to cease operations.&nbsp;

It was the third time Cottonwood Hills had closed due to financial issues. The Nick Faldo designed course opened in 2006 but closed soon after when developer Lane Neville could not find investors to fund the housing portion of the development.&nbsp;

The course was then purchased by Drayton Alldritt of Wichita and with a herculean effort the course was opened and brought back to playable conditions after it was idle for three years.&nbsp;

But the course quickly became the subject of much speculation as to its future when it was only open during the warmer months. Alldritt put the course up for sale. When there were no suitable offers Aldritt took the listing down. The course eventually went back to the Tennessee bank. Park Partners had been operating the course for the bank since then.

The bank has listed the course again with an asking price of $2,490,000. Realtor Mark Faulkenberry of Emersons Commercial Real Estate could not comment on the course other than to say there has been some interest.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — While there has been some interest according to a realtor offering the property, Cottonwood Hills remains up for sale.The golf course, which has been closed since October, is still in the ownership of Apex Bank of Tennessee. The bank has been in ownership of the course off and on for several years after buying it in foreclosure. Park Partners of Wichita suspended operations of the course in October stating that the lack of ownership commitment was a major reason to cease operations.&nbsp;It was the third time Cottonwood Hills had closed due to financial issues. The Nick Faldo designed course opened in 2006 but closed soon after when developer Lane Neville could not find investors to fund the housing portion of the development.&nbsp;The course was then purchased by Drayton Alldritt of Wichita and with a herculean effort the course was opened and brought back to playable conditions after it was idle for three years.&nbsp;But the course quickly became the subject of much speculation as to its future when it was only open during the warmer months. Alldritt put the course up for sale. When there were no suitable offers Aldritt took the listing down. The course eventually went back to the Tennessee bank. Park Partners had been operating the course for the bank since then.The bank has listed the course again with an asking price of $2,490,000. Realtor Mark Faulkenberry of Emersons Commercial Real Estate could not comment on the course other than to say there has been some interest.

While some interest expressed, no buyers for Cottonwood Hills

The Reno County Health Department has updated the Reno County COVID-19 Dashboard to reflect additional clusters identified within Reno County. 

The most recent cluster identified is at Hutchinson Community College with seven laboratory confirmed COVID-19 positive cases; six of which reside within Reno County. HutchCC is closely working with local medical providers and the Reno County Health Department to identify the cases and their close contacts through contact tracing to continue to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Currently in Reno County there are a total of eight clusters; six of which are considered active. The definition of a COVID-19 outbreak, also known as a cluster, is two or more associated cases outside of the household. 

An outbreak will not be closed until two consecutive cycles of incubation periods are completed without a new case or equal to twenty-eight days.

Please continue to be vigilant by washing your hands, social distance by at least six feet or more, wear a mask when you are in public places and stay at home if you are not feeling well. 

It is very important that people continue to follow the guidelines to help decrease the spread of COVID-19.

Reno County now up to eight clusters considered active, including at HutchCC

RENO COUNTY— A Pretty Prairie woman was injured in an accident west of Haven Thursday afternoon. 

The Reno County Sheriff's Office reports that just before 1 p.m., deputies were dispatched to East Arlington Road and Obee Road. 

Twenty-one-year-old Marissa Ray told deputies she was traveling east bound on Arlington Rd. heading towards Wichita, when she stated she had vision problems. 

Ray said this cleared up just prior to her vehicle leaving the roadway to the left. The vehicle then struck a bridge culvert and spun.  The vehicle then came to a rest in a tree row. There was significant front end damage to the vehicle, as well as undercarriage damage.

Ray told deputies she was buckled up. She had a few small cuts on her wrist, but was otherwise okay.

Woman injured in Thursday accident in Reno County

HARVEY COUNTY— One person was injured in an accident just before 2 p.m. Thursday in Harvey County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 International semi driven by 68-year-old Bobby Lee Young of Hesston was westbound on Dutch Avenue and turned south on Halstead Road in front of an eastbound 2017 Buick Enclave driven by 79-year-old Lavina Ann Schroeder of Goessel.

The Buick struck the semi in the eastbound lanes.

EMS transported a passenger in the Buick, 83-year-old Dorothy Mae Zook of Hesston, to St. Francis in Wichita. Schroeder was not transported for treatment. Young was not injured. All three were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Woman from Hesston hospitalized after crash with semi

MARION COUNTY —Tabor College has placed students in isolation and others in quarantine after they tested positive for coronavirus.

According to a media release from the school, on Wednesday afternoon, following the established COVID protocol, a student experienced symptoms and contacted a medical professional. 

On the advice of the medical professional, the student was tested at a CLIA approved COVID laboratory and the test result was positive. 

Teammates experiencing symptoms were also tested and two additional students were found positive. Following the established protocol, the students are now in isolation in an approved location. The Marion County Health Department has been contacted and is determining who needs to be quarantined.

Currently, there are three students in isolation and five in quarantine. Continued contact tracing may increase those in quarantine.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Employees at the First National Bank wanted to find a way to say thank you to the officers and staff of the Hutchinson Police Department. 

So the employees of the Deposit Operations and Customer Service collected a large box of snacks and goodies for the department. It also included snacks for the three K-9 officers as well.

The department wanted to say thank you to the employees of the bank for the support.

BURRTON, Kan. — Area fire crews including crews from Hutchinson are on the scene of a brush fire in Harvey County Thursday afternoon.

According to Harvey County 911 the fire is located in an area of NW 12th Street and Riverpark Road or about one mile south of Harvey County West Park.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Students attending Hutchinson Public Schools remotely will have the opportunity to have breakfast and lunch each school day.

&nbsp;The meals will be ordered weekly and all meals must be preordered. To receive a meal package for the first week, the electronic form is due by 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31.

The meals will be picked up from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Hutchinson High School on Wednesday, Sept. 2, or from noon to 12:30 p.m. from Hutchinson Middle School – 7 on Wednesday. The first week of meals will be for four days only because of the Labor Day holiday.

For students who qualify for free meals, there will be no charge for the meals and those on reduced lunch programs will get the meals at a reduced rate.

USD 308 to offer meals for remote students

Kan. —&nbsp;The impact of Hurricane Laura on gas prices is still being felt.

"We are seeing some slight increases as a result of Hurricane Laura in the Gulf," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "This is typical ahead of any storm, especially in the region where landfall takes place, where people make a rush on gasoline before the storm hits. However, we don't see the jumps being significant, like we can see with some storms in that region."

Gas prices in our part of the country are up a little, too.

"We're seeing Reno County at $1.99 average," Steward said. "In Hutchinson, we're right at about $2. 1.99 is the Kansas average as of today. That's 10th cheapest in the United States."

It's still a lot better than prices typically are this time of year.

"We're 36 cents less than we were one year ago today," Steward said. "Overall, not too much to complain about. We're still right about that $2 a gallon range or a little bit lower than that."

Given the tropical activity, it remains to be seen which direction prices will go depending on the amount of supply chain damage Laura has made.

Violation of this law not only endangers children but is punishable by a fine and court costs in excess of $420.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Despite a very strong start, the number of people who used the Salt City Splash declined in 2020.&nbsp;

Ted Nelson of Hutch Rec says the pool saw tremendous use in the first month before attendance dropped off sharply in July. Numbers were able to rebound again in August but overall attendance was down about 10%, according to Nelson. Still, he was happy they got to stay open throughout the year with no problems related to the pandemic.

“We are happy to have finished out the season,” Nelson said. “We thought of some staff members getting sick which means others would quarantine which would cause us to have to close down for a brief time or early for the summer. We didn’t have either of those things.”

The splash numbers for 2020 totaled 28,250 compared with 31,524 in 2019. In Buhler, the numbers for the year were actually up with 5,638 taking advantage of the pool compared with 4,653 the year before.

Pool attendance numbers fall after strong start

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Siemens Gamesa says it can continue to lead the way in wind energy into the future as it released its Virtual Capital Markets Day presentation.

The world's number one wind turbine maker says it will be able to weather the challenges brought on by outside factors including the pandemic.

“Public and government demand for clean energy solutions to the climate crisis will drive continued investment in renewable electricity generation and we are well positioned to deliver value to shareholders and society by playing a full role in that process,” Andreas Nauen, CEO of Siemens Gamesa said. “It has been a tough period for the industry and the company, but I am confident we have all the right components in place. Our people, technology, scale and global footprint are strong foundations on which to build a long-term industry leader.”

Siemens Gamesa has continued to see major growth in the offshore business sector and continues to try and gain ground in the onshore market. During its quarterly release last month the company said its order book increased by 14%. 

Onshore industry forecasts predict stable long-term demand, with estimated high level of annual installations of 55 GW through 2025 growing to more than 65 GW in 2030. 

Siemens Gamesa says it has defined a clear roadmap to return the onshore business to sustainable profitability including new technology, restructuring measures and reducing the complexity of its supply chain. It’s the supply chain issues that forced Siemens Gamesa to lay off a number of employees at the Hutchinson facility this past spring. The layoffs were short lived as the supply chain issues resolved.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), renewable energies will account for more than 50% of the global capacity mix in 2040 and wind is expected to attract the highest investments in that period, according to BNEF. 

Strong growth is expected in particular in the Offshore and Services markets over the next decade, while demand in Onshore will remain solid. Additionally, prospects are expected to be buoyed by the emergence of green hydrogen technologies in which Siemens Gamesa expects wind to play a key role according to the company release.

"We have a strong profitable competitive position in the growing Offshore (#1) and Services (#2) markets, and there is very significant potential in our Onshore business that we will realize through the turnaround process now underway,” Nauen said. “A new management team has been appointed to lead the turnaround. Additionally, through our new core shareholder, Siemens Energy, we will be part of an energy powerhouse, and we expect to be able to benefit from strong synergy potential.”
