The need for blood is always there, but this year's Battle of the Badges Blood Drive could not come at a more opportune time for the Red Cross.

"The Red Cross is saying that they are at a ten-year low, as far as the amount of blood that's available," said Capt. Troy Mueller with the Hutchinson Fire Department. "Normally, the blood banks try to keep a five day supply. That's what they strive for across the country. Since the pandemic started, they have struggled to keep even a one day supply available."

There are some appointment times left for the drive.

"There's about ten appointment spots left for today, ten for tomorrow and 15 for Wednesday, which is really good," Mueller said. "They've got close to a little over 100 appointments a day. With just a little over 35 appointments out of three hundred some appointments, that's a pretty good showing. They do ask that if you can't keep your appointment, to be sure and cancel it so that other people can."

Also, they ask that everyone get an appointment if you want to give, but other than that, it's a simple process.

"They make the process seamless," said Fire Chief Steven Beer. "You just show up, they do all the work. You sit there, they give you a snack afterwards and they take care of you. Again, at the end of the day, you did something positive for the community."

The blood drive is today from noon until 7 p.m.; Tuesday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.; and Wednesday from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. all at the First Presbyterian Church at 201 E. Sherman.

Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood shortage remains critical as Battle is underway

SEDGWICK, Kan. — A Sedgwick man is dead after a rollover accident Saturday night in Harvey County.

Authorities say 20-year-old Jacob Shrewsbury was traveling with another individual in the 10,000 block of South West Road when the car left the roadway and went into a ditch. The vehicle then rolled over, ejecting both individuals before catching fire.

Shrewsbury was pronounced dead at the scene. The other individual, a man in his 20s, was transported to Wesley Medical Center in serious condition.

The accident happened around 9:30 p.m. just east of Sedgwick or about six miles southwest of Newton.

Sedgwick man killed in single vehicle accident

Kan. — 
Hutchinson City Manager Jeff Cantrell said no matter what the city council decides on the Woodie Seat Freeway project, he expects the public to continue to have input throughout the process.

"I think we'll come up with a pretty cohesive concept as to what we are going to do," Cantrell said Monday. "Really, the biggest input on that from the residents is going to happen during any construction design phase. For us right now, it's hard to bring design to the table that gives specifics like landscaping or berming or features like that. That typically happens later on."

City staff will present the options that the council saw in a study session again Monday night at 6:30 p.m. at Avenue A school as part of the regular SW Bricktown neighborhood meeting, though any Hutchinson resident is welcome to come.

"I think if we propose a design that is sustainable, we stand a really good chance," Cantrell said. "If we went to them and we showed them a design of the existing bridge structures without any changes to those, I don't think we would...hard to say, really, but I don't think we would be awarded."

In order to stay on schedule to potentially get KDOT grant money for this project in this cycle, the council will need to make a decision in February. Given that timeframe, it's likely that a plan to put traffic down on surface streets at Avenue F wouldn't be able to get an answer from the railroads involved in a timely manner, even if the council wanted to go that direction.

"I used to think KDOT took a very long time to get a response from," Cantrell said. "Probably, in the spectrum of things, they are very prompt, compared to a railroad. Railroad response takes a long time. Even when everybody's on the same page and wants the same outcome, it just takes a very long time."

Cantrell said on the Cow Creek drainage project, as an example, the railroads are looking for multiple crossing closures in exchange for allowing necessary bridge work. It's hard to know how many crossings the city would have to let be closed to offset the Woodie Seat traffic, if that option were ultimately chosen.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The number of active COVID cases
increased from Friday’s total. According to figures released Monday morning from
the Reno County Health Department, the number of active COVID cases is at 1,266, an increase
of 46. That’s still less that the latest peak of 1,342 on Jan. 20.

The total number of cases jumped by 405, from Friday to
16,055. Since the pandemic began 205 county residents have died from COVID. 

The vaccination rate did increase over the weekend with
53.24% of county residents vaccinated or 33,243 total.

Active COVID cases increase over the weekend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas is all about agriculture and the subject is taught at the college level all throughout the state. At the high school level
that has not been the case in most areas. Hutchinson USD 308 hopes to change
that with new courses at the Career and Technical Education Academy. 

The USD 308 School Board will take action Monday on a new series of
courses at the HCTEA centered&nbsp; around agriculture and ag science. Courses include Intro to Agriculture,
Food Science, Animal Science, and Bio-Technology in Agriculture among others.
The board will also take action on computer purchases and go over several
personnel matters. Tonight’s USD 308 School Board meeting begins at 6 p.m. at
the USD 308 offices at 1520 N. Plum.

USD 308 Board to take action on new ag related courses

Kan. The Nickerson USD 309 School Board will hold a special meeting on Monday
to go over two personnel matters. 

The first is approval of a new football coach
for Nickerson High School. If approved Taylor Bauman will be the next Panther
football coach and teach PE.

Also this
evening, the board will take action on a request to offer sick leave to one of
the district's staff. Tonight’s USD 309 meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the school district
offices at 4501 W. 4th Ave.

An unplanned pregnancy is an emotional event, no matter what stage of life you are in. At Open Door Pregnancy Care Center, executive director Neeley Pickard wants prospective parents to know, it's about care, not about judgment.

"Our typical client is 16 to 25 years old," Pickard said. "However, we have a range of moms and dads both that come in for pregnancy tests and different options. We've had a client that was 38 and pregnant, so you never know who is going to walk through our doors."

Open Door provides pregnancy tests and verification, ultrasound to find out where the pregnancy is in gestation, material aid like baby items and things for mom and dad, parenting classes, post abortion recovery, sexual integrity classes, male mentoring classes for dads and referrals to other community resources. All of the services are free.

"No insurance, no nothing, we are just there to support them," Pickard said. "We don't take their money."

Even though Open Door has a faith component, there is no quid pro quo.

"Anybody that walks through our doors, we will serve them," Pickard said. "We're seeing about 30 to 40 clients a week. That may not just be first time visits. We try to get our clients to come back in on a weekly basis to meet with a mentor, so that they have that support person ongoing throughout the pregnancy and even once the baby is born."

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Market South Hutch Business of the Month is Tom's Detail Shop. According to owner Tom Hoffman, he's been in the same place for a long time.

"I started the business 27 years ago in 1995," Hoffman said. "I was 24 years old and we've been here ever since. We do auto detailing and Scorpion spray-in bed liner."

The business started out as a way to supplement income and grew from there.

"I've always had a passion of keeping my own vehicles clean," Hoffman said. "I just like to keep things clean. I've always been kind of a picky person. I started doing it in the corner of this shop. I rented this shop from a guy, just a corner of it and just kind of doing it on the side. I was working part-time at UPS, so I needed something to do in my spare time, so I just started doing it in the corner of this shop. It took off, so I rented half the shop and then it took off even more, so I rented the full shop and then I bought the place."

Hoffman said he did both for three years before he could go on his own full-time. He currently has three employees.

"In the summertime, sometimes I'll hire a school kid or something like that part time to help out, because we get really busy in the summer," Hoffman said.

He also still does some work himself, especially when they are really busy. He chose South Hutch, as it is home.

"I grew up here," Hoffman said. "I went to school here, grade school, high school. I've always been in South Hutch. I have rental houses, as well and they're all in South Hutch."

Going the extra mile for customers is just part of doing business, according to Hoffman.

"Just because our hours are 8 to 5 doesn't mean it stops there," Hoffman said. "People call me, text me. If a customer can't get down here and pick their car up by 5, that's not an issue. We'll meet you, whenever you tell us to be here, we'll be here. I have a loaner vehicle. We try to make it as easy as possible."

They are also the only ones in town that do spray-in bedliners for trucks. Hoffman is looking forward to his annual special next month on his detail service.

"Every year, on my anniversary date, which is February 6, I run a promotion for $25 off any deluxe detail and nano treatment, which is my premium package detail for a vehicle," Hoffman said. "I run that for the month of February. If you schedule it in February, we'll honor it in March, too."

The cost of the chemicals and other supplies necessary to do the detail work has been a challenge for Hoffman lately, but he and his staff take pride in the reputation they have built and it is their goal to keep prices under control as much as possible and keep the customers that have been so loyal to him through the pandemic. 

Tom's Detail Shop is located at 110 North Walnut in South Hutchinson and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Kansas’ Ochai Agbaji and K-State’s Nijel Pack shared Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week while Texas Tech’s Kevin Obanor was voted Newcomer of the Week. Agbaji collected his fourth career honor and third of the season, including consecutive weeks. Pack and Obanor were recognized for the first time.

In Kansas' two come-from-behind road wins, Agbaji averaged 19.5 points and 6.0 rebounds. In the win at Oklahoma, he left the game in the first half with a wrist injury when he collided with the scorer’s table. His 10 points for the game came in the final 5:25. Kansas trailed 52-50 when Agbaji scored eight straight for KU with his eighth tying the game at 58. He then made a basket to put KU up 62-60 and later made the assist that led to what would be the game-winning three-pointer by Christian Braun. At Kansas State, the senior guard tied his career-high with 29 points. He scored seven of Kansas' final nine points, including the go-ahead field goal with nine seconds remaining. Agbaji later iced the victory making two free throws with 1.1 seconds left.

Pack averaged 25.5 points on 57.6 percent shooting, including 58.8 percent from 3-point range, in splitting games at No. 23/22 Texas and at home against No. 7/7 Kansas. After helping the Wildcats hand the Longhorns their first home loss with 16 points, he followed that with a near-historic effort against the Jayhawks, scoring a career-high 35 points on 12-of-18 field goals, including 8-of-12 from 3-point range. The guard’s 35 points tied for the seventh-most by a Wildcat in a Big 12 game, while it tied for the fourth-most by a sophomore in school history. He is just the sixth Wildcat to score 35 or more points ever against Kansas. Pack’s eight made 3-point field goals tied his career-high and were tied for the most made in a conference game by a K-State player. Only one Wildcat has ever made more than eight 3-pointers in a game (Askia Jones' school-record 14 in 1994).

Obanor led Texas Tech with 15 points and eight rebounds in its win over No. 15 Iowa State on Tuesday before going off for 18 points in the win over West Virginia on Saturday. The senior forward hit six shots in both games and was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line against WVU as the Red Raiders improved to 12-0 at home with the win. Obanor's 18 points against WVU are the most he's had in a Big 12 game this season and were just two shy of his season-high. A transfer from Oral Roberts, he has 1,495 points and 777 rebounds in his career.

Agbaji, Pack share weekly Big XII honor

(KJCCC) January 24, 2022 – The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) has suspended the conference wrestling duals schedule for 2022.

“With the current state of the pandemic, the KJCCC feels that safety of our student athletes at wrestling colleges needs to be a top priority,” said KJCCC commissioner Carl Heinrich.&nbsp;

Athletic directors and wrestling coaches at the eight KJCCC wrestling colleges met with conference officials via Zoom call last week to discuss the safety issue. Heinrich commented following the meeting.

“To afford our student athletes with the best and safest opportunity to wrestle in the postseason, we have decided to pause the current dual and conference schedule,” said Heinrich.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We will resume competition in Colby (KS) at the NJCAA District Championships.”

The NJCAA District Championships are scheduled for the Colby Event Center on February 12.

The 2022 NJCAA Wrestling Championships are set for the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs IA on March 4-5.

KJCCC Wrestling Conference Schedule Suspended

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– No. 7/7 Kansas (16-2, 5-1) returns home to host No. 18/19 Texas Tech (15-4 (5-2) in a Big 12 battle on ESPN Big Monday, Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. (CT).

At 5-1, Kansas sits atop the Big 12 standings after its 78-75 come-from-behind win at Kansas State, Jan. 22, in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown. KU trailed by 17 early in the second half in the victory. Texas Tech is tied with Baylor for second in the Big 12 standings at 5-2. The Red Raiders have won two straight after defeating West Virginia, 78-65, on Jan. 22.

Since the inception of the Big 12 in 1996-97, Kansas is 74-20 all-time on ESPN Big Monday (44-1 at home and 30-19 on the road), including 55-14 under head coach Bill Self (33-0 at home and 22-14 on the road).

Kansas leads the overall series with Texas Tech, 39-7, including 20-1 in Allen Fieldhouse. Earlier this season, Texas Tech handed Kansas its lone league loss, 75-67, on Jan. 8, in Lubbock.

Kansas is No. 7 in the NET rankings released by the NCAA for 2021-22 through games played Jan. 22. Nine of the 10 Big 12 teams are ranked in the top 50 in the latest NET – (4) Baylor, (7) Kansas, (13) Texas Tech, (18) Texas, (29) Iowa State, (37) Oklahoma, (43) TCU, (47) West Virginia and (48) Oklahoma State.

Kansas leads the Big 12 in scoring offense (80.8 ppg), which is 16th nationally, field goal percentage (49.7%), which is eighth nationally, and three-point field goal percentage (36.7%, 49th nationally).

Senior Ochai Agbaji has been named to the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 Watch list, The Sporting News Midseason All-American Second Team and has twice been the Big 12 Player of the Week, including Jan. 17. Agbaji leads the Big 12 in scoring at 20.4 points per game, which is 18th nationally. Agbaji has scored 20 or more points in 11 games this season.

Kansas is the only Big 12 school that has two players ranked in the top six in the Big 12 in scoring with Agbaji first at 20.4 ppg and junior Christian Braun sixth at 15.3 ppg.

Kansas shows balance on the boards as it is the only school in the Big 12 to have three players ranked in the top 11 in rebounding with senior David McCormack fifth (6.8 rpg), redshirt-sophomore Jalen Wilson sixth at 6.5 rpg and Braun 11th at 5.8 rpg.

The two winningest programs in college basketball will square off when Kansas hosts Kentucky in the Big 12/SEC Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 5 p.m. (CT) on ESPN. Kansas is second with 2,339 all-time wins, while Kentucky is first with 2,342 victories.

ESPN’s College GameDay will originate from Allen Fieldhouse on Jan. 29 with the live show running from 10-11 a.m. (CT).

Kentucky leads the overall series with Kansas, 23-9, but the Jayhawks have won four of the last five meetings and are 7-4 against the Wildcats under Bill Self.

TOPEKA – The Hutchinson Community College men’s track and field team earned three national qualifications on Saturday at the season-opening All-Kansas Invitational at Washburn University.

The Blue Dragons had one event win, 14 Top 10 finishes and scored 51 points in the 19-team field filled with Jayhawk Conference schools, NAIA programs as well as teams from Wichita State, Washburn and Fort Hays State.

Sophomore sprinter Clyedterrious Thompson won the 60 Meters on Saturday with a national-qualifying time of 6.84 seconds. Thompson ran the ninth-fastest 60-meter time in Blue Dragon history. He qualifying second for the finals, running 6.84 seconds in the preliminaries.

Thompson finished seventh in the 200 meters in 22.17 seconds. He finished eighth in the long jump at 21 feet, 2.75 inches.

Sophomore Antonio Cooper qualified for nationals for the first time as a collegian, placing third in the shot put. He had a top mark of 51-9.75, which is the seventh-best indoor mark in Blue Dragon history.

Freshman distance runner Collin Oswalt was the third Blue Dragon to qualify for the NJCAA Indoor national championships in March. Oswalt qualified in the 3,000 meters in a 13th-place time of 8:46.26. That time is the fourth-fastest time in Blue Dragon history.

Freshman Sharim Hamilton placed second in the 400 Meters, running a time of 49.85 seconds, which is the third-fastest in Blue Dragon indoor history.

Freshman Caleb Manning was fifth in the high school after clearing 6-2.75. Manning also placed fourth in the triple jump at 46-5.5 and was fifth in the long jump at 21-9.

Sophomore Davion Gardenhire had two personal-best performances in Saturday. Gardenhire ran PRs of 7.11 seconds in the 60 meters and 22.40 seconds in the 200 meters.

Dre’Shun Bridges had a PR of 7.12 seconds in the 60 meters. Andrew Holt had a PR in the Mile run in 4:40.81.

The Blue Dragons will next compete at the Jayhawk Invitational on Saturday in Pittsburg.

Blue Dragons track qualifies 3 for NJCAA indoor nationals

TOPEKA – Hutchinson Community College sophomore Louise Cocking had a strong opening to the 2022 indoor track and field season with a national qualifying mark in one event and a new school record in other on Saturday at the All-Kansas Invitational hosted by Washburn University.

Cocking and sophomore All-American Kiana Brown both qualified for the NJCAA Indoor Championships in March. The Blue Dragon women collected five Top 10 placings and 13 points to finish eighth in the 19-team field filled with NCAA Division I and Division II programs as well as several NAIA and Jayhawk Conference teams.

Cocking, a first-team NJCAA Cross Country All-American, qualified for the NJCAA indoor championships in the 3,000 meters on Saturday. She finished fourth in the event with a time of 10:36.98, which is the second-fastest time in Blue Dragon history.

Cocking just missed qualifying in the Mile run, but set a Blue Dragon school record with a fourth-place time of 5:21.77. Cocking just missed qualifying in the Mile in .08 seconds.

Brown set a Blue Dragon indoor PR in the pole vault after clearing 10 feet, 4 inches. Her ninth-place effort was the fifth-best indoor vault in Blue Dragon history. Brown was a second-team outdoor All-American last season, but didn’t qualify for the indoor national championships.

Freshman Keneah Romney posted two Blue Dragon Top-10 efforts in her Blue Dragon debut. Romney placed ninth in the 200 meters in 26.58 seconds, which is the fifth-fastest indoor 200 time in school history. Her 10th-place 400-meter time of 1:01.51 is the seventh-fastest time in team history.

Three other Blue Dragons set for personal records on Saturday.

+ Lushous Davis had PRs in the shot put (34-0.75) and weight throw (40-9).

+ Hannah Schrock had a PR in the weight throw (40-9).

+ Noel Buckhaults had a PR in the 3,000 meters (11:28.96).

The Blue Dragons will compete in the Jayhawk Conference Invitational next Saturday at the Plaster Center in Pittsburg.

The lead changed hands three times in the final two minutes of regulation before Harrison Butker, who earlier had missed a field goal and extra point, drilled a 49-yarder for Kansas City as time expired to force overtime. The Chiefs won the coin toss, marched swiftly downfield against the NFL's top-ranked defense, and right into their fourth straight AFC title game. They'll play the Bengals next Sunday night for a spot in the Super Bowl.

UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills 42-36 in overtime on Sunday night to advance to the AFC championship game. The Chiefs won the coin toss and scored on Patrick Mahomes' 8-yard touchdown pass to tight end Travis Kelce. Because the Chiefs scored a touchdown on their opening possession, they won the game despite Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills not getting an offensive possession in the extra period.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Justin Faulk had a goal and an assist and the St. Louis Blues beat the undermanned Vancouver Canucks 3-1. Brayden Schenn and Jordan Kyrou also scored for the Blues, and Vladimir Tarasenko had two assists. Ville Husso stopped 38 shots and has a .963 save-percentage in his last five games. Tanner Pearson had a goal for the Canucks, who have six players and two assistant coaches in the NHL's COVID-19 protocols. Michael DiPietro had 14 saves in his season debut for Vancouver, becoming the fourth goalie to play for the team this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pro Bowl safety Tyrann Mathieu was placed in the concussion protocol and ruled out of Sunday night's divisional playoff game against Buffalo after taking a knee from teammate Jarran Reed on the opening drive. Mathieu walked off the field and was met by Chiefs coach Andy Reid. The two of them spoke briefly before Mathieu took a knee, then went to the injury tent and eventually into the locker room to be evaluated for a concussion. Cindy Brown of Long Beach State scored 60 against San Jose State on Feb. 16, 1987 and Rachel Banham had 60 for Minnesota on &nbsp;Feb. 7, 2016 against Northwestern. Lee had 32 points in the first half to help Kansas State take a 51-27 lead. She surpassed her school-record 43-point effort — set in the first game this season — on a layup with 1:55 left in the third quarter.&nbsp;

WACO, Texas (AP) — Jordan Lewis scored 24 points with six made 3-pointers and No. 15 Baylor beat seventh-ranked Iowa State 87-61. Queen Egbo added 14 points and set a career high with 20 rebounds for Baylor. Sarah Andrews added 18 points with four 3-pointers and NaLyssa Smith scored 17 points for the 13-4 Bears. Ashley Joens, who missed a loss to Texas on Wednesday game because of Big 12 health and safety protocols, led Iowa State with 19 points. Her 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter gave the 16-3 Cyclones their last lead.

UNDATED (AP) — What is going on with the NFL playoffs? One day after the two No. 1 seeds fall on the same day for the first time in 12 years, the league's GOAT (goht) quarterback and the defending champs are ousted from the postseason. In all three cases, the game was decided on a field goal as time expired. The fourth game of the weekend was decided in overtime, the lone contest won by the home team.

This time, it was Matt Gay drilling a 30-yard kick to bail out the Los Angeles Rams in a 30-27 win over Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady and the Bucs' defense had engineered a comeback from a 27-3 deficit before Matthew Stafford connected on completions of 20 and 44 yards to Cooper Kupp, setting up the winning kick and putting the Rams in the NFC championship game against the visiting 49ers.

Stafford coasted for three quarters, ran for a short TD and finished with 366 yards passing and two touchdowns. His primary target was Kupp, who had nine catches for 183 yards and a score.

Brady took advantage of three Rams turnovers to rally the Bucs, whose offense was stagnant over the first 40 minutes. He was 30 of 54 for 329 yards, one touchdown and an interception.

Leonard Fournette had a pair of rushing TDs for the defending Super Bowl champs.

The question now is whether this was Brady's final game. The seven-time Super Bowl is signed through next season and said in September he expected to play out the contract. But he has indicated several times since then that returning will be a family decision.

It will be the Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC championship game next Sunday.

Patrick Mahomes (mah-HOHMZ') found Travis Kelce (KEHL'-see) in the corner of the end zone early in overtime to give the Chiefs a 42-36 triumph over the Bills. The lead changed hands three times in the final two minutes of regulation before Harrison Butker drilled a 49-yarder for Kansas City as time expired to force overtime.

Mahomes finished with 378 yards passing and three touchdowns, including a 64-yarder to Tyreek Hill during the thrilling final minutes of regulation. 

It's the second straight year the Bills' season has ended in Kansas City. Josh Allen did everything in his power to prevent it by throwing two scoring strikes to Gabriel Davis in the last 1:54 of regulation. His last TD toss came with 13 seconds to play, just enough time for Mahomes to engineer the game-tying drive.

Allen finished with 329 yards passing, and Davis with eight catches for 201 yards.

UNDATED (AP) — The Dallas Mavericks won a battle of hot teams.

Luka Doncic (DAHN'-chihch) and Kristaps Porzingis (KRIHS-tahps pohr-ZIHN'-gihs) carried the Mavericks to a 104-91 win over the Grizzlies.

Doncic had 37 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists for the Mavericks, who led by as many as 22 in their 11th victory in 13 games. Porzingis chipped in 15 points, eight boards and a season-high six blocks before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter.

Ja (jah) Morant had 35 points and 13 rebounds for the Grizzlies, going 14 for 31 from the floor. The rest of the team shot under 34% as Memphis lost for the third time in five games since a team-record 11-game winning streak.

— Jordan Poole dropped in 20 points and the Warriors beat the Jazz for the fourth consecutive time, 94-92. Steph Curry added 13 points, but struggled again with his 3-point stroke a month after becoming the all-time NBA 3s leader, going 1 for 13 from deep and 5 of 20 overall. Bojan (BOY'-ahn) Bogdanovic led Utah with 21 points and Rudy Gobert (goh-BEHR') added 12 with 18 boards.

— Nikola Jokic (nih-KOH'-lah YOH'-kihch) capped his 34-point performance by hitting four free throws in the final seconds, allowing the Nuggets to secure a 117-111 win versus the Pistons. Jokic just missed his fifth consecutive triple-double, finishing with nine rebounds and eight assists. Will Barton had 14 points and Aaron Gordon added 13 points for the Nuggets, who went 4-2 on a six-game homestand.

— Anthony Edwards provided 25 points and D'Angelo Russell had 23 with 10 assists in the Timberwolves' 136-125 victory against the Nets. Karl-Anthony Towns overcame a poor shooting night, scoring 15 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter of Minnesota's third win in four games. Kyrie Irving scored a game-high 30 points for the Nets, who are 2-2 since Kevin Durant sustained a sprained MCL.

— Jimmy Butler broke LeBron James' record for triple-doubles in a Miami uniform, contributing 20 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists in a 113-107 win against the Lakers. Duncan Robinson scored 25 points and the Heat won without Kyle Lowry and Tyler Herro (HEE'-roh). James carried the Lakers yet again, finishing with 33 points and 11 rebounds. 

— The Wagner (VAHG'-nur) brothers helped the Magic overcome DeMar DeRozan's 41 points in a 114-95 thumping of the Bulls. Moritz Wagner scored 23 points and younger brother Franz Wagner added 18 as Orlando ended a nine-game home losing streak. Nikola Vucevic (nee-KOH'-lah voo-CHAY'-vihch) hit two of Chicago's five 3-pointers and scored 13 points to go with his 13 rebounds before fouling out. 

— The 76ers held off the Spurs, 115-109 as Joel Embiid (joh-EHL' ehm-BEED') furnished 38 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. Tobias Harris added 18 points and 11 rebounds and Furkan Korkmaz (FUR'-kan KOHRK'-mahz) had 17 points for Philadelphia, which saw a 15-point, fourth-quarter lead shrink to 111-109.

— Trae Young scored 30 points and tied a season-high with eight 3-pointers in the Hawks' fourth straight win, 113-91 over the cold-shooting Hornets. De'Andre Hunter chipped in with 20 points for the Hawks, who led by 27 in the fourth quarter. Miles Bridges and LaMelo Ball each finished with 19 points for the Hornets, who missed their first 19 3-point attempts and shot an abysmal 11.1% from beyond the arc. 

— The Trail Blazers were 114-105 winners over the Raptors behind double-doubles from CJ McCollum and Jusuf Nurkic (YOO'-suhf NUR'-kihch). McCollum had 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Nurkic had 11 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth straight double-double. Anfernee Simons and Nassir Little each had 19 points for Portland, which led by 34 in the first half.

— Jayson Tatum provided 48 of his 51 points in the first three quarters of the Celtics' 116-87 pounding of the Wizards. Tatum hit nine 3-pointers and was 18 of 28 from the field as Boston climbed back to .500 with its first win in three games. Bradley Beal scored 19 points for the Wizards, who never led in coach Wes Unseld Jr.'s return from the COVID-19 health and safety protocol list.

— RJ Barrett and Julius Randle carried the Knicks to a 110-102 victory. Barrett finished with 28 points, 14 rebounds and six assists for the Knicks, who embark on a three-game road trip after their 1-3 homestand. Randle delivered 24 points and nine boards in one of his better performances of the year. 

NEW YORK (AP) — Milwaukee Bucks guard Grayson Allen has been suspended by the NBA for one game for his hard foul on Alex Caruso that resulted in a broken right wrist for the Chicago Bulls guard. 

Allen will serve his suspension Wednesday when the Bucks visit the Cleveland Cavaliers. 

Stefanovic leads No. 4 Purdue past Northwestern 80-60

UNDATED (AP) — It was a good 40 minutes of work for third-ranked Arizona and No. 4 Purdue on Sunday.

Christian Koloko had 19 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks as the Wildcats ripped California, 96-71. Bennedict Mathurin added 14 points and eight rebounds for Arizona, which is 16-1 and 6-0 in the Pac-12. 

Oumar Ballo scored 14 and Kerr Krissa had 13 with four 3-pointers in the rout. 

Purdue is 16-3 overall after its 10th straight win over Northwestern, 80-60.

Sasha Stefanovic scored 22 points, going 4-for-5 from 3-point range in the first half. Trevion Williams and Zach Edey had 12 points apiece to help coach Matt Painter tie Piggy Lambert for second on the school wins list with 371.

Penguins rally to edge road-weary Jets 3-2 in a shootout

UNDATED (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins are owners of a five-game winning streak as they threaten to taken over the NHL's Metropolitan Division lead.

Kasperi Kapanen (kas-PEHR'-ee KAP'/-ah-nehn) and Jeff Carter scored nine seconds apart in the third period before Sidney Crosby furnished the lone shootout tally in the Pens' 3-2 verdict over the Jets. Tristan Jarry stopped 27 shots and was perfect after Blake Wheeler made it 2-0 in the second.

The Penguins have won 16 of their last 18 games to climb within a point of the first-place New York Rangers.

— The expansion Kraken have pulled off a two-game season sweep of the league's top team, 5-3 over the Panthers. Mason Appleton had gone nearly two months without a goal before snapping a 3-3 tie 26 seconds into the third period. Marcus Johansson, Yanni Gourde (YAH'-nee gohrd) and Colin Blackwell all scored in the second period of Seattle's third win in four games.

— Brayden Schenn's (shehnz) power-play goal 3:26 into the second period put the Blues ahead to stay in a 3-1 victory at Vancouver. Ville Husso (VIH'-lay HOO'-soh) stopped 38 shots and blanked the Canucks after Tanner Pearson opened the scoring 16 1/2 minutes into the contest. Justin Faulk and Jordan Kyrou (KY'-roo) also scored to help St. Louis win for the sixth time in seven games.

— Carl Grundstrom scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period of the Kings' 3-2 win at New Jersey. Alex Iafallo and Viktor Arvidsson also scored and Cal Peterson stopped 23 shots as Los Angeles improved to 1-3 on its six-game road trip. Jesper Bratt scored twice for the Devils and Damon Severson had two assists.

— Anton Forsberg stopped 35 shots as the Senators beat the Blue Jackets, 2-1 night to end a three-game losing streak. MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Three Americans will be in the Australian Open women's quarterfinals Tuesday in Melbourne.

Danielle Collins took advantage of Elise Mertens' double fault on match point to advance to the quarters. She advanced 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 and will play Aliza Cornet, who today beat two-time major winner Simona Halep (HA'-lehp). 

Jessica Pergula and Madison Keys are the other Americans in the quarterfinals and will play their matches on Tuesday. 

U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev beat 70th-ranked Maxime Cressy in four set on the second of the show courts at Melbourne Park. He will next play ninth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Gonzaga suspends Stockton's season tickets over mask rule

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Gonzaga has suspended John Stockton's basketball season tickets after the Hall of Fame point guard refused to comply with the university's mask mandate. Stockton confirmed the move in a Saturday interview with The Spokesman-Review. 

The prominent Gonzaga alum has claimed without evidence that more than 100 professional athletes have died after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. 

Experts have told the AP there is "no scientific evidence" that either COVID-19 or the mRNA vaccines have increased sudden cardiac arrest, often referred to as SCA, among athletes. 

LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — Hudson Swafford has rallied to win The American Express for the second time in five years, defeating Tom Hoge by two strokes.

Swafford eagled the par-5 16th to take the lead, then added a 20-foot birdie on 17 before sinking a par putt for an 8-under 64 that left him 23 under in his third career PGA win. He began the day three strokes behind rookies Lee Hodges and Paul Barjon. 

The victory gets Swafford into the Masters.

Winless in '21, Danielle Kang starts new LPGA year with win

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP ) — Danielle Kang isn't wasting any time making sure she doesn't go through another winless season. She capped off a strong weekend at Lake Nona with a 68 to win the season-opening Tournament of Champions. Kang won by one shot over Brooke Henderson of Canada. She was the only player to shoot in the 60s all four days, even on a chilly, blustery Florida weekend.

NEW YORK (AP) — From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the top U.S. public health agency has been criticized as too slow to collect and act on new information.

Now, increasingly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is also being criticized for moving too fast.

One year into Dr. Rochelle Walensky’s tenure as director, her bid to make the CDC more agile is being challenged by political pressures, vocal scientists and the changing virus itself. In its haste, some experts say, the agency has repeatedly stumbled — moving too quickly, before the science was clear, and then failing to communicate clearly with local health officials and the public.

“I think they are absolutely trying to be more nimble — and that’s a good thing. I don’t criticize that,” said Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association. “I criticize the fact that when you’re doing this quickly, in an evolving environment, you can’t just put it out there and think that people understand it.”
