U.S. Senator Jerry Moran says a new $222 million infusion of federal funding will provide critical relief for Kansas hospitals and help keep rural communities viable across the state.

During a recent interview, Moran discussed visits to hospitals in Russell and Belleville, where administrators echoed what he has heard statewide: Kansas hospitals are financially fragile, and the new funding arrives at a pivotal moment.

The dollars come through the Rural Health Transformation Act, included in the federal reconciliation package addressing Medicaid policy. Moran said lawmakers were concerned that changes to Medicaid reimbursement could further strain already vulnerable rural hospitals.

“I don’t think there’s a hospital in Kansas that’s not fragile,” Moran said. “The finances of our health care system are fragile as well. We were looking for ways to make certain that hospitals in our state did not suffer significant consequences financially.”

Moran said he advocated strongly for the program and pushed to ensure it did not require a state match — a key provision, he noted, that allows Kansas to fully access the funds. The state is expected to receive $222 million this year, with similar amounts projected annually for the next five years.

Those resources, Moran said, should help keep hospital doors open across Kansas, though he cautioned the funding will not make hospitals flush with cash.

“No hospital is going to be swimming in money,” he said. “But it’s certainly going to make staying in business and keeping the doors open a bit easier.”

Moran emphasized that health care access and agriculture are inseparable pillars of rural Kansas. Without hospitals, he said, communities risk losing pharmacies, businesses, and families.

“If our hospital doors close, there’s no pharmacy on Main Street,” Moran said. “Young families won’t take the chance of raising their kids where there’s not access to health care, and senior citizens are often told they need to move where there’s a doctor and a hospital.”

He pointed to western Kansas communities where struggling farm economies combined with hospital closures could accelerate population decline.

“Often the hospital is the largest employer in a small town,” Moran said. “So the consequences ripple through the entire community.”

Moran said preserving rural hospitals and supporting a strong farm economy have long been central to his work in Washington, dating back to conversations he has had with Kansas broadcasters and constituents over many years.

“A significant component of why I asked for this job was to fight to keep rural Kansas — rural America — alive and well,” Moran said. “At the top of the list is access to health care and a successful farm economy. Those two things determine whether towns like my hometown of Plainville, and communities across Kansas, have a future.”

Moran said he will continue working to ensure the funding produces the intended results and helps strengthen rural Kansas in the years ahead.

“We want to grow Kansas and make sure the entire state has a bright future,” he said. “These two topics — health care and agriculture — really help determine whether that happens.”

Moran: $222M rural health funding a ‘Sigh of Relief’ for Kansas hospitals

NEW YORK (AP) — The year's first&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supermoon-december-2025-how-to-see-6a5fe21cb247932f691781f04dd8f33e">supermoon</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/how-to-watch-quadrantid-meteor-shower-5e6daab02a494ab4bbd629f81175b030">meteor shower</a>&nbsp;will sync up in January skies, but the light from one may dim the other.

The Quadrantid meteor shower peaks Friday night into Saturday morning,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.amsmeteors.org/meteor-showers/meteor-shower-calendar/#Quadrantids">according to the American Meteor Society</a>. In dark skies during the peak, skygazers typically see around 25 meteors per hour, but this time they'll likely glimpse less than 10 per hour due to light from Saturday's supermoon.

“The biggest enemy of enjoying a meteor shower is the full moon,” said Mike Shanahan, planetarium director at Liberty Science Center in New Jersey.

Meteor showers happen when speedy space rocks collide with Earth’s atmosphere, burning up and leaving fiery tails in their wake — the end of a “shooting star.” A handful of meteors are visible on any given night, but predictable showers appear annually when Earth passes through dense streams of cosmic debris.

Supermoons occur when a full moon is closer to Earth in its orbit. That makes it appear up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than the faintest moon of the year, according to NASA. That difference can be tough to notice with the naked eye.

Supermoons, like all full moons, are visible in clear skies everywhere that it's night. The Quadrantids, on the other hand, can be seen mainly from the Northern Hemisphere. Both can be glimpsed without any special equipment.

To spot the Quadrantids, venture out in the early evening away from city lights and watch for fireballs before the moon crashes the party, said Jacque Benitez with the Morrison Planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences. Skygazers can also try looking during early dawn hours on Sunday.

Wait for your eyes to get used to the darkness, and don’t look at your phone. The space rocks will look like fast-moving white dots and appear over the whole sky.

Meteor showers are named for the constellation where the fireballs appear to come from. The Quadrantids — space debris from the asteroid 2003 EH1 — are named for a constellation that's no longer recognized.

The next major meteor shower, called the Lyrids, is slotted for April.

The Farm Service Agency is offering youth loans to help young people establish and operate agricultural income-producing projects through 4-H, FFA, and other approved agricultural organizations.

The program is designed to give youth hands-on experience in planning, managing, and operating a small agricultural business while developing financial and leadership skills. Projects must be conducted under the guidance of an organization advisor and structured to generate enough income to repay the loan.

Youth loans may be used for a variety of modest agricultural projects, including livestock, crop production, equipment, or other approved enterprises tied to a supervised program of work. The maximum loan amount available through the program is $10,000.

To qualify, applicants must be between 10 and 20 years of age and either be a U.S. citizen or a legal resident alien. Applicants must also meet general FSA eligibility requirements and demonstrate the ability to manage the project with guidance from an approved project advisor. A project supervisor is required to recommend the youth loan applicant and provide ongoing supervision throughout the project.

Local assistance is available through the Reno County USDA Service Center, which can help families and advisors prepare and submit application forms.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Farmers are now learning how much aid they can expect to receive from a&nbsp;$12 billion package&nbsp;that&nbsp;President Donald Trump&nbsp;announced earlier this month.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture&nbsp;released the figures&nbsp;Wednesday for how much aid per acre farmers can plan on for each row crop. The details arrived after most farmers have already met with their bankers to arrange financing for next year's crops and placed orders for the seed and fertilizer they will need. But officials have promised that the payments should arrive by the end of February.

Soybean farmers&nbsp;have been hit especially hard by Trump's trade war with China, which&nbsp;stopped buying any American crops&nbsp;after Trump announced his tariffs this spring. China is the world's largest buyer of soybeans. This aid package is expected to help farmers weather the trade disruptions until China&nbsp;buys more soybeans&nbsp;under an&nbsp;agreement announced in October&nbsp;and until provisions of Trump's massive budget bill take effect later this year.

Soybean farmers will get $30.88 per acre while corn farmers will receive $44.36 per acre. Another crop hit hard when China stopped buying was sorghum, and those farmers will get $48.11 per acre. The amounts are based on a USDA formula on the cost of production.

Farmers say they need more buyers for their crops

But farmers say the aid&nbsp;won't solve all their problems&nbsp;as they continue to deal with the soaring costs of fertilizer, seeds and labor that make it hard to turn a profit right now. Some agricultural trade groups have said they worry that thousands of farmers could go out of business, but others have said they believe most farmers have the financial resources and equity needed to survive.

Kentucky soybean farmer Caleb Ragland, who was president of the American Soybean Association until recently, said the aid is “a Band-Aid on a deep wound. We need competition and opportunities in the market to make our future brighter.”

The President of the National Corn Growers Association Jed Bower also urged the Trump administration to focus on cultivating additional uses for their crops. Farmers will benefit from having more buyers whether it is for ethanol and animal feed at home or for international markets.

“Corn growers have been sounding the alarm about the fact that farmers have been faced with multiple consecutive years of low corn prices and high input costs,” Bower said. “While this financial assistance is helpful and welcomed, we urgently need the administration and Congress to develop markets in the United States and abroad that will provide growers with more long-term economic certainty.”

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said that is the goal and promised to continue working to open new markets while strengthening the safety net for farmers.

Minnesota Soybean Growers Association President Darin Johnson said the aid number for soybeans fell short of what farmers had been hoping for, so more help could be needed, though this package will help.

Most farmers remain steadfast supporters of Trump even after the disruptions caused by the trade war. They generally support many of his other policies and believe they will get a better trade deal in the end.

White House and farmers encouraged by China's purchases

These aid payments will add up to $11 billion for row crop farmers who raise corn, soybeans, wheat, sorghum and other crops. Another $1 billion has been set aside for specialty crops and sugar, but the administration hasn't released any details of aid for those crops.

After Trump met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in South Korea in October, the White House said Beijing had promised to buy at least 12 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans by the end of the calendar year, plus 25 million metric tons a year in each of the next three years. Officials have said China is on track to meet the 12 million metric ton goal by the end of February.

As of Dec. 18, China had bought about 6 million metric tons of soybeans, according to the latest USDA’s weekly report. Separately, the federal agency reported that China since then bought at least three more batches totaling 600,000 metric tons.

Beijing has yet to confirm any commitment to buying 12 million metric tons of soybeans for this season, but the Chinese embassy in Washington said earlier this month that “agricultural trade cooperation between China and the United States is proceeding in an orderly manner.”

However, the recent increase in international purchases is encouraging to farmers, said Tim Lust, CEO of the National Sorghum Producers, who has seen more than 1 million metric tons of sorghum purchased in just the past few weeks. Like soybeans, more than half of the sorghum crop is exported each year with China traditionally being the biggest buyer.

The aid payments will be capped at $155,000 per farmer or entity, and only farms that make less than $900,000 in adjusted gross income will be eligible. During the first Trump administration, a number of large farms found ways around the payment limits and&nbsp;collected millions.

The USDA says&nbsp;the average size&nbsp;of the 1.88 million farms nationwide was 466 acres last year, but many farmers are much larger than that as larger operations have continued to buy up neighboring farms over time.

FHSU and Kansas Community Colleges announce guaranteed admission program in psychology

The year began with a landmark agreement expanding access to higher education across the state. I was joined by Kansas Association of Community Colleges Director Heather Morgan and leaders from all 19 Kansas community colleges to sign a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a guaranteed admission pathway into FHSU’s clinical and school psychology programs.

Students completing an associate degree at a Kansas community college can now transition seamlessly into FHSU bachelor’s programs—and, uniquely, the guarantee extends through the master’s degree level for both clinical and school psychology, provided GPA requirements are met. The initiative directly addresses workforce shortages in mental health and education while removing barriers for students seeking advanced degrees in critical service professions.

Applied Technology achieves 100 percent graduate job placement

FHSU’s Department of Applied Technology has reached a milestone that speaks volumes about its hands-on approach to education: a 100 percent graduate job placement rate. Department Chair Kim Stewart credited the achievement to long-standing partnerships with industry and a robust internship requirement embedded in the curriculum.

With nine credit hours of internships, roughly equivalent to two summers of professional experience, students graduate not only with degrees but with practical skills, employer connections, and real-world readiness. For a department that has consistently hovered near a 98 percent placement rate, the milestone reinforced FHSU’s reputation as a workforce-driven institution.

Ben Schears named Vice President for Economic and Workforce Development

Leadership for economic growth took a major step forward when Ben Schears, president of Fort Hays Tech | Northwest, was named FHSU’s Vice President for Economic and Workforce Development. In this role, Schears leads efforts to align education, innovation, and workforce needs across the region.

In the opening months that Schear has served in this role, he has worked with Strategic Affiliation partner Fort Hays Tech | North Central to assist High Plains Mental Health and Fort Hays Tech | North Central in addressing the workforce needs associated with their expanding operations. Now in the works is a new associate’s degree program at Fort Hays Tech | North Central that will help High Plains Mental Health staff entry-level positions. The goal of this partnership is to create seamless educational pathways that enable students to earn and learn as they advance in their careers.

Under his leadership, FHSU was selected to serve as one of six entities in the Heartland Rural Innovators Initiative hosted by the Center on Rural Innovation (CORI). Sponsored by the Patterson Family Foundation, the initiative aims to create local efforts that focus on closing the growing gap in tech sector jobs in rural America. The effort will consolidate existing assets across Ellis County to create a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem that supports tech sector jobs.

Grace McCord Selected as a Finalist in Truman Scholar Competition

Fort Hays State University Political Science major Grace McCord was selected as one of just 200 finalists in the national competition for the Truman Scholarship, selected from 800 highly accomplished applicants nominated by their universities. Truman Scholars are college juniors chosen for their commitment to pursuing a career in public service. Truman Scholars receive a scholarship for graduate study funded by the Truman Foundation, which was created to honor the values of President Harry S. Truman.

Grace served her community through a number of service projects, including work with Jana’s Campaign and the Celebration Community Church Quilting Ministry, among other activities. In her career at FHSU, she has led the American Democracy Project and served as a senator in the Student Government Association, where she currently serves as the Legislative Affairs Director, as well as holding leadership roles in the Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society and her sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta.

Dr. Lisa Goddard McGuirk named athletic director

Dr. Lisa Goddard McGuirk joined FHSU as its new Athletic Director, bringing with her a national reputation for excellence in Division II athletics. Previously serving as athletic director at Gannon University, she was named NCAA Division II Athletic Director of the Year in 2024.

Business Retention and Expansion Program launches regional pilot

Professional and Continuing Education at FHSU launched an innovative pilot program designed to strengthen local economies through business retention and expansion strategies. This initiative was led by representatives from FHSU, Fort Hays Tech | North Central, and Fort Hays Tech |Northwest. Class cohorts were formed in Beloit, Goodland, and Hays, and participants included leaders from business, government, education, and economic development. The program curriculum focused on applying practical tools to support community growth. This initiative highlighted the power of regional collaboration and FHSU’s leadership role in rural economic development.

Corey Isbell named president of Fort Hays Tech | Northwest

Corey Isbell, Ed.D., was named president of Fort Hays Tech | Northwest, succeeding Ben Schears. With more than 25 years of experience in technical education across rural Kansas, Isbell brought a deep understanding of workforce training, student success, and community engagement.

His appointment ensured continuity and momentum within the Fort Hays State system, reinforcing strong partnerships between FHSU and technical education institutions across the region.

FHSU Stroup Hall breaks ground to expand nursing program

On August 21, Fort Hays State University broke ground on a $15.4 million project to expand Stroup Hall. The project will add 30,000 additional square feet and unite the Departments of Nursing and Allied Health under one roof. This expansion will allow the two departments to collaborate more closely in training the next generation of students. Funded by the Kansas Legislature, the new Stroup Hall will include simulation labs, updated classrooms, and hands-on training opportunities, with completion expected in December 2026.

FHSU is currently serving 425 allied health students and slightly more than 725 nursing students. The University expects the expansion to enable enrollment in nursing programs to increase by more than 65% and in medical diagnostic imaging programs by 40%. Fall 2025 enrollment numbers anticipate expected growth in both disciplines with allied health experiencing a 22% increase in students this fall and nursing seeing a 9% increase.

Seven-Figure gift announced for campus library

Homecoming weekend brought a new reason to celebrate: a seven-figure gift from Stephen and Tatiana Tebo and their family to support the renovation of the campus library, now named the Tebo Library.

The gift marked one of the most significant philanthropic investments in campus infrastructure. The renovated library will serve as a hub for learning, collaboration, and discovery for generations to come.

Insight Kansas: Playing devil's advocate on the Chiefs' deal

SALINE COUNTY—Law enforcement investigating a series of burglaries on December 19, in Salina have a suspect in custody.

Police investigators developed&nbsp; information that 43-year-old Matthew Hewitt was a possible suspect, according to Salina Police Captain James Feldman. On Christmas Eve officers located Hewitt at the Value Inn on 1640 W. Crawford in Salina. When officers arrived they discovered Hewitt was inside a hotel room with a woman identified as 51-year-old Mindy Burr.

Officers made announcements that Hewitt was under arrest and that all occupants needed to exit the room. However, there was no response and a Salina Police negotiator made contact with Hewitt by phone.

During the phone call, Hewitt stated he was armed and that "officers should not come inside the room if they want to make it Christmas."

Later as Hewitt started to exit the room, he failed to comply with the officer's attempt to make the arrest. A K9 was then released and it bit Hewitt.

 Hewitt was then taken into custody and transported to Salina Regional Health Center for treatment of minor injuries.

Burr was also arrested on the scene and booked into the Saline County Jail on requested charges of Felony Interference with Law Enforcement and Harboring a Subject with a warrant.

A search warrant was then conducted inside the hotel room and a AR rifle, items taken in the burglay from the&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/a431e1b9-e3e6-4322-a431-f2e9e0776864">Boy Scouts of America</a>, along with several other items were recovered.&nbsp;

Hewitt was booked into jail on requested charges of Burglary, Interference with Law Enforcement, Criminal Use of a Firearm and Criminal Threat.

He also had a federal&nbsp;warrant for Probation violation for Firearms Violation that was issued by the US Marshals Service.

Hewitt is expected to face more charges as he is also a suspect connected to the burglaries in downtown Salina at the end of November.

Kansas man accused of three burglaries in one day

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The FBI said Friday it disrupted a New Year’s Eve attack plot targeting a grocery store and fast-food restaurant in North Carolina, arresting an 18-year-old man who authorities say pledged loyalty to the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/syria-islamic-state-hegseth-trump-61dcee09576ce806de3a04aaec152495">Islamic State group</a>.

Christian Sturdivant was charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. Investigators said he told an undercover FBI employee posing as a supportive confidant about his plans to attack people. Their online messages, along with a recent search of his home, indicated attacks would occur with knives and hammers, according to prosecutors and records.

Worried Sturdivant might attempt violence before New Year’s Eve, the FBI placed him under constant surveillance for days, including on Christmas, U.S. Attorney for Western North Carolina Russ Ferguson said.

Agents were prepared to arrest him earlier if he left his home with weapons, Ferguson said at a news conference in Charlotte. “At no point was the public in harm’s way.”

Sturdivant was arrested Wednesday and remained in custody after a federal court appearance Friday. An attorney representing him did not immediately respond to an email or phone message seeking comment. Another hearing was scheduled for Jan. 7.

The alleged attack would have taken place one year after 14 people were killed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/new-orleans-bourbon-attack-security-1298ae460051ab9d80e04f41ed7b6802">in New Orleans</a>&nbsp;by a U.S. citizen and Army veteran who proclaimed support for IS on social media.

The FBI has foiled several alleged attacks through sting operations in which agents posed as terror supporters, supplying advice or equipment. Critics say the strategy can amount to entrapment of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-334730f048af4529ad328f60315b5c7d">mentally vulnerable</a>&nbsp;people who wouldn’t have the wherewithal to act alone.

Searches of Sturdivant’s home and phone uncovered what investigators described as a manifesto detailing plans for the attack, FBI Special Agent in Charge James Barnacle told reporters.

“He was willing to sacrifice himself,” Barnacle said.

A handwritten note found in a trash can at Sturdivant's home listed details of the planned attacks and the number of intended victims at a Burger King restaurant and unnamed grocery store, according to an FBI affidavit.

The note also said he would attack arriving officers and “hoped to die by the hands of police.” Ferguson said the attack was to take place in Mint Hill, a bedroom community of Charlotte.

The affidavit said a database check indicated Sturdivant worked at Burger King in Mint Hill. It wasn't clear if that was the same restaurant cited in the note. Ferguson declined to identify the specific targeted businesses, citing the ongoing investigation.

If convicted, Sturdivant faces up to 20 years in prison, according to court documents.

The fact that Sturdivant encountered two undercover officers while allegedly planning the attack should reassure the public, Ferguson said.

The affidavit says the investigation began last month after authorities linked Sturdivant to a social media account that posted content supportive of IS, including imagery that appeared to promote violence. The account’s display name referenced Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the former leader of the extremist group.

Some experts argue that IS is powerful today partly&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/new-orleans-crash-islamic-state-lone-wolves-4bb6446c484737fbe9dd1b9c26a899a9">as a brand</a>, inspiring both militant groups and individuals in attacks that the group itself may have no real role in.

The affidavit says Sturdivant had been on the FBI's radar in January 2022, when he was a minor, after officials learned he'd been in contact with a suspected IS member in Europe, and received instructions to dress in black, knock on people's doors and commit attacks with a hammer.

At that time, Sturdivant set out for a neighbor’s house armed with a hammer and a knife but was restrained by his grandfather, the affidavit says.

No charges were filed at that time, but Sturdivant underwent psychological treatment and the FBI was told he no longer had access to social media, Ferguson said. But the FBI found out weeks ago that he was back on it, he added.

The FBI in Los Angeles last month announced the disruption of a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/los-angeles-new-years-eve-turtle-liberation-arrests-a84a26742ecbd5fe813ab959162268d2">separate New Year’s Eve plot</a>, arresting members of an extremist anti-capitalist and anti-government group who federal officials said planned to bomb multiple sites in southern California.

Other IS-inspired attacks over the past decade include a 2015 shooting rampage by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/united-states-government-f42318ce395a471d8ffd19607c651a36">a husband-and-wife team</a>&nbsp;who killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California, and a 2016 massacre at&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/domestic-news-domestic-news-general-news-fa93fb3237aa41f591c1b0c026d6c7c3">a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida</a>, by a gunman who fatally shot 49 people.

FBI disrupted a New Year's Eve attack plan inspired by ISIS

GREELEY COUNTY&nbsp;– The Greeley County Sheriff’s Office requested the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) issue a statewide Silver Alert for a missing Tribune man.

The whereabouts of 77-year-old Juan Arias Vasquez are unknown, and public assistance is requested to help locate him.

Vasquez was last seen on Friday, Jan. 2, leaving his home at around 10:30 a.m. He is likely driving a maroon 2017 Dodge Ram bearing the plate 452NWX.

Vasquez is 5-feet-8 inches tall and weighs around 185 pounds. He has brown eyes and black/gray hair, and was last seen wearing&nbsp;a black jacket,&nbsp;tan pants, and a black and brown ballcap.

Vasquez has dementia, and family members are concerned about his safety.&nbsp;

KBI: Silver Alert for missing Kansas man

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating human remains found in Shawnee County.

On Friday, police reported that just after 5:30p.m. Tuesday,&nbsp;officers responded to a report of a deceased individual in the area of NE U.S. 24 Highway and NE Calhoun Bluff Road, according to a media release. Upon arrival, officers discovered human remains.

At this time, foul play is not suspected. Police have not released the name of the deceased until official confirmation and the&nbsp;next of kin have been notified.

Police: Human remains found in northeast Kansas

A woman was killed in a suspected mountain lion attack while she was hiking alone in the mountains of northern Colorado on Thursday, in what would be the first fatal attack by one of the predators in the state in more than 25 years, authorities said.

Wildlife officers later in the day located two mountain lions in the area and fatally shot the animals, said Kara Van Hoose with Colorado Parks and Wildlife

The attack occurred in the mountains south of the small community of Glen Haven, about 7 miles northeast of Estes Park and considered the gateway to the eastern entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Shortly before noon, two hikers encountered a mountain lion near the woman’s body along a remote section of the Crosier Mountain trail, which is on a national forest.

The hikers threw rocks at the animal to scare it from the immediate area so they could try to help the woman, Van Hoose said. One of the hikers was a physician who attended to the victim and did not find a pulse, she said.

Details on the woman's injuries and cause of death were not immediately released.

Van Hoose said the search for other mountain lions in the area was ongoing. She said circumstances would dictate whether any additional lions that are found are killed.

Sightings of mountain lions are common in the forested area where the suspected attack occurred, but there have not been any recent documented attacks on humans, Van Hoose said.

“This is a very common time of year to take mountain lion sightings and reports and especially in Larimer County, where this is very good mountain lion habitat,” she said. “Trails in this area are in pretty remote land, so it’s wooded, it’s rocky, there’s elevation gains and dips.”

Mountain lion attacks are rare and Colorado's last suspected fatal attack was in 1999, when a 3-year-old was killed. Two years before that, a 10-year-old boy was killed by a lion and dragged away while hiking with family members in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Last year&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mountain-lion-kills-man-dc8f26db4da45bd32550eadce7cf496c">in Northern California</a>&nbsp;two brothers were stalked and then attacked by a lion that they tried to fight off. One of the brothers was killed.

The animals, also known as cougars, catamounts and other names, can weigh 130 pounds (60 kilograms) and grow to more than six feet (1.8meters) long1. They eat primarily deer.

Colorado has an estimated 3,800-4,400 of the animals, which are classified as a big game species in the state and can be hunted.

Woman killed in mountain lion attack while hiking in Colorado

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump and top Iranian officials exchanged dueling threats Friday as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-traders-protest-rial-currency-ddc955739fb412b642251dee10638f03">widening protests</a>&nbsp;swept across parts of the Islamic Republic, further escalating tensions between the countries after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-war-nuclear-talks-geneva-news-06-21-2025-a7b0cdaba28b5817467ccf712d214579">America bombed Iranian nuclear sites in June</a>.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-protests-economy-israel-us-nuclear-8533eacbc3c502ccc5f5339ae4384399">At least seven people have been killed</a>&nbsp;so far in violence surrounding the demonstrations, which were sparked in part by the collapse of Iran’s rial currency but have increasingly seen crowds chanting anti-government slogans.

The protests, now in their sixth day, have become the biggest in Iran since 2022, when the death of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-mahsa-amini-protests-un-report-366a199119720e69696a123560ef4018">22-year-old Mahsa Amini</a>&nbsp;in police custody triggered nationwide demonstrations. However, the demonstrations have yet to be countrywide and have not been as intense as those surrounding the death of Amini, who was detained over not wearing her hijab, or headscarf, to the liking of authorities.

Trump initially wrote on his Truth Social platform, warning Iran that if it “violently kills peaceful protesters,” the United States “will come to their rescue.”

“We are locked and loaded and ready to go,” Trump wrote, without elaborating.

Shortly after, Ali Larijani, a former parliament speaker who serves as the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, alleged on the social platform X that Israel and the U.S. were stoking the demonstrations. He offered no evidence to support the allegation, which Iranian officials have repeatedly made during years of protests sweeping the country.

“Trump should know that intervention by the U.S. in the domestic problem corresponds to chaos in the entire region and the destruction of the U.S. interests,” Larijani wrote on X, which the Iranian government blocks. “The people of the U.S. should know that Trump began the adventurism. They should take care of their own soldiers.”

Larijani’s remarks likely referenced America’s wide military footprint in the region.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-qatar-udeid-air-base-attack-us-aace65a65a0ce69090a7b65fe85cfac8">Iran in June attacked Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar</a>&nbsp;after the U.S. strikes on three nuclear sites during Israel's 12-day war on the Islamic Republic. No one was injured, though a missile did hit a radome there.

No major changes have been made to U.S. troop levels in the Middle East or their preparations following Trump’s Iran post, said a U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military plans.

Ali Shamkhani, an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who previously was the council's secretary for years, separately warned that “any interventionist hand that gets too close to the security of Iran will be cut.”

“The people of Iran properly know the experience of ‘being rescued’ by Americans: from Iraq and Afghanistan to Gaza,” he added on X.

Iran's hard-liner parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf also threatened that all American bases and forces would be “legitimate targets.”

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei also responded, citing a list of Tehran's longtime grievances against the U.S., including&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-1953-coup-cia-218323db3cc1aca6bde1e54827527e8d">a CIA-backed coup</a>&nbsp;in 1953, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/de425ed9833b4bdaa03306f37182995f">downing of a passenger jet</a>&nbsp;in 1988 and taking part in the June war.
