John Jenkinson says this year’s harvest delivered some of the best yields in years — but now the challenge is finding a place for all the grain.

Jenkinson said the 2025 harvest season went “smooth,” with nearly ideal weather and timely rains that boosted yields far beyond what many expected.

“We had rains at just the right time,” he said. “Just enough to get us to the next one. A lot of farmers around us are saying the same thing — the yields were absolutely way above what we expected.”

Record sorghum and corn — and nowhere to put it

But the strong harvest has created a new problem: storage.

Across western Kansas — from Colby to the Oklahoma Panhandle — Jenkinson said grain is piling up on the ground because elevators are full.

“I’ve seen farmers clearing off machinery lots just to pile their own crop on their own ground,” he said. “One elevator near us said they only had room for four more loads of milo and three of corn — then they were shutting the doors.”

With more grain still in the field, Jenkinson said the lack of storage highlights the urgent need for expanded markets and follow-through on trade agreements.

“We are awash in grain right now,” he said. “China has said they’d buy U.S. sorghum, corn and soybeans — but they’ve yet to do that. Meanwhile, they’re buying cheaper grain from Brazil.”

Brazil competition and ethanol demand

Jenkinson said Brazil’s lower production costs and the strength of the U.S. dollar are making American grain less competitive.

“We’ve got a big competitor in South America,” he said. “They can grow it cheaper, and China doesn’t see them as an adversary.”

Ethanol plants across western Kansas are running at full capacity and using as much corn and sorghum as they can, he said, but it won’t be enough on its own.

“We have to find new markets — both overseas and domestically — for all the grain we can grow," he added.

Jenkinson also voiced frustration that a government-funded biofuel plant in Georgia recently purchased Brazilian product instead of U.S. grain. “They can actually buy Brazilian grain cheaper and ship it into the United States than you can buy American grain,” he said.

Even with big yields, Jenkinson said farmers are barely breaking even because of high costs for fertilizer, fuel, chemicals and insurance. “If we hadn’t had those extra bushels, we would be facing a deficit,” he said. “Margins are tight, and we’ve got to turn that around.”

He warned that if conditions don’t improve, the U.S. risks losing too many farmers. “We do not want to get into a position where we’ve eliminated so many farmers that we have to start importing our food.”

Wheat crop looks good — but markets still lag

Despite concerns in other sectors, Jenkinson said this year’s winter wheat is off to a strong start. “All of our wheat is up and looking good,” he said. “Western Kansas wheat is in pretty good shape.”

Farmers and traders are awaiting the first USDA world supply-and-demand report since the government shutdown halted monthly data.

USDA offices scrambling after shutdown

The recent government shutdown halted much of the work at USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA), leaving farmers behind on necessary paperwork.

Jenkinson said local offices will need time to catch up. “They’ve missed a lot of work that usually gets done this time of year,” he said. “FSA employees are going to have to hit the ground running.”

Among the delayed tasks are 578 forms, crop reports, and insurance paperwork for 2026 wheat.

Farm bill stalled, bankruptcies rising

Congress has not yet passed a new farm bill, leaving producers without clarity on future price supports or risk-management tools. “Right now nobody has assurances,” Jenkinson said. “It’s critical that Congress gives us a direction.”

He said SNAP benefits will resume soon, but how that impacts the farm bill is still unclear.

As for bankruptcies, Jenkinson said Kansas hasn’t seen a spike — but the national picture is troubling. “Nationwide, yes, we’ve seen an uptick of two or three percent,” he said. “It’s a sad state of affairs.”

Jenkinson said despite challenges, farmers remain committed — and hopeful that policymakers will act with urgency.

“We need trade deals, we need markets, and we need Congress to focus on agriculture,” he said. “We’ve got good people in the FSA offices and good farmers out here. We’re all looking forward to getting back to normal.”

Jenkinson says record harvest facing storage, market challenges

In this edition, Dave talks to a mother of two about the nuts and bolts of his commission vs. allowance idea when teaching kids about money.

I’m trying to wrap my head around your commission method of giving money to kids. We have an 11-year-old and a 16-year-old. Should they have individual lists of tasks, or should there be one big list they both work from on a first-come, first-served basis? 

Also, should giving, spending and saving be a mandatory part of the commission structure? Is there a time when children should age out of the commission structure?

I really like the “age out” part of your question. So, let’s look at the entire scenario as an evolution. For starters, you should teach kids to work and manage money early, but at an age-appropriate level. 

We don’t send 3-year-olds to the salt mines. We&nbsp;might&nbsp;send a 16-year-old there ... I’m kidding, of course. But it’s not unfair to expect more of a 16-year-old and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/relationships/how-to-teach-kids-about-money">teach them</a>&nbsp;with more sophistication and detail than you would a preschooler.

If you tell a 3-year-old to clean up their room, those of us who have had kids that age know the child will put away two or three toys — and you’ll do 90% of the actual work. Then, the kid gets lots of high-fives and praise for being the best room-cleaner on the planet. Oh, and here’s a dollar for doing one of your chores.

The point at that age is to teach them to make an emotional connection between work and money. Work creates money. It’s a simple concept, but I still talk to folks in their 40s and 50s every day who can’t seem to grasp the idea. After that, you can move on to things that are a little more complicated. 

You have to clean the room yourself. It’s your turn to feed the dog. And tasks get a little bigger, and little more complicated. This is a great time to introduce them to the uses for money — I’m talking about giving, saving and spending — and how to do all three.

By the time they’re 16 or so, they should know enough about money and how to handle it properly that you can help them open their own checking and savings accounts. Cosign on the accounts for them, and as they begin making more money through things like after school and summer jobs, they can practice managing their finances on a different level with parental oversight.

But the real point behind the commission structure is this: If you do the work, you get paid. If you&nbsp;don’t&nbsp;do the work, you&nbsp;don’t&nbsp;get paid. When they’re younger, and maybe don’t want to do a job here and there, that’s okay. They’re kids. What you’re doing is new to them, and it’s a learning process. But if it goes on for a couple of weeks, or they decide they’re just not going to do anything — that’s not an option. They’re going to learn to work.

Camilla, my goal as a parent wasn’t to raise great kids. It was to raise kids who became great adults. In my mind, parents do their kids an awful disservice if they don’t teach them how to be mature, functioning adults in the real world. And handling their finances wisely, along with learning the value of work, is a huge part of that.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dave Says: We don't send three-year-olds to the salt mines

Reno County residents are being asked to watch their mailboxes as officials launch a new survey seeking public input on potential sales tax options.

County leaders said approximately 4,000 residents were randomly selected to receive the survey, which is arriving by mail this week. The effort is part of an ongoing evaluation of whether to pursue additional sales tax measures and how those options might impact local needs and priorities.

Residents who receive the survey may complete it on paper and return it using the included postage-paid envelope. County officials say the feedback will play an important role in guiding future discussions.

With Thanksgiving among the busiest travel holidays of the year, the Hutchinson Police Department is urging motorists to stay vigilant and buckle up as traffic volumes rise across Kansas.

HPD is joining law enforcement agencies statewide for the annual Thanksgiving Safe Arrival campaign, running Nov. 22–29. During the week-long effort, drivers can expect an increased law-enforcement presence on local roads as officers focus on seat belt safety and traffic education.

According to HPD, proper seat belt use remains the most effective way to prevent serious injury or death in a crash. Officers say that while many drivers buckle up routinely, improper or inconsistent use continues to be a major factor in avoidable injuries.

The department is also reminding families that fit matters when it comes to seat belts and child restraints. Safety recommendations include:

“Thanksgiving brings heavy traffic, long trips, and more distractions,” the department said. “The simplest step you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones is to buckle up every time.”

HPD encourages motorists to plan ahead, drive attentively, and make seat belt safety a top priority throughout the holiday travel period.

Buhler Mennonite Church and Ideatek seek volunteers for Dec. 6 meal-packaging event to Produce 50K meals for local food banks

HUTCHINSON — The historic Fox Theater is already off to a strong start this season, and Executive Director Josh Davies says the momentum is only building as the venue heads into the holidays. Following standout performances from Home Free and the high-energy ensemble Tilt, the Fox now turns its attention to its next major act: the Squirrel Nut Zippers on Friday, Nov. 21.

Davies says the acclaimed New Orleans-style jazz and swing band brings an unmistakable throwback energy to the stage—one that longtime fans and newcomers alike will appreciate.

“They were at the forefront of that revival of New Orleans jazz and swing in the ’90s,” Davies said. “It’s basically like traveling back in time to the roaring ’20s. High-energy horns, great rhythm—just fantastic music you don’t hear on the radio anymore.”

The band’s upcoming tour includes a special show titled “Jazz from the Back O’ Town,” mixing their biggest hits with storytelling about the history of the genre. Unlike groups such as Postmodern Jukebox, which reimagines modern songs in vintage styles, the Squirrel Nut Zippers perform largely original material rooted in traditional jazz and swing.

Davies shared that season ticket sales were up slightly from last year—a sign of strong community support. While season packages are no longer available after the first show of the year, individual tickets remain on sale for all remaining performances.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Museum is gearing up for its annual fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 15, with a 1960s-themed celebration called “Peace, Love &amp; Preservation.” The event, designed to raise essential operating funds, takes place at The Red Shed Music Venue, located at 6311 U.S. Highway 61, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Bronwyn Page, Director of Operations for the museum, says the gathering is not just a themed party—it's a lifeline.

“Funding has been reduced in recent years,” Page said in an interview on KWBW. “While we’re grateful for a recent increase from county commissioners, we’re still in need of support to keep the museum accessible to the community, preserve our growing collection, and make room for new donations.”

A Celebration of History and Preservation

The night includes a three-course seated dinner, silent auction, live entertainment, and a nod to the museum’s legacy as home to the historic KWBW radio station on its second floor. Attendees can expect a lively atmosphere, complete with 1960s flair, a trivia session, and party favors.

The theme ties into two milestones: the museum’s 60th year since the Reno County Historical Society was formed, and the current featured exhibit on the Vietnam War, which was curated in partnership with Humanities Kansas and features stories from local veterans that were also archived at the Library of Congress.

In addition to financial donations, Page said community members can help by volunteering their time—whether it’s to help with interior cleaning, exhibit setup, or outdoor landscaping. The museum also accepts donations of supplies through an online Amazon wishlist.

A wide variety of silent auction items will be up for bid during the event, including locally made artwork, gift certificates from Hutchinson businesses, and donations from the Cosmosphere and Fox Theatre.

National average ticks up, remains lower than last year 

OSAGE COUNTY&nbsp;– The Kansas Bureau of Investigation continues investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one suspect deceased and four officers injured.

Just before 10:30 a.m. Saturday, the Osage County Sheriff's Office and Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) were dispatched to a domestic disturbance at 11222 S. Topeka Ave. in Osage County after a female resident called 911, according to a media release from the KBI.

Law enforcement encountered a male suspect, identified as Stephen M. McMillan, 22, outside the residence. During the encounter, gunfire was exchanged. Three deputies and two KHP troopers fired during the incident. In the shooting, three deputies, one trooper, the suspect and a male resident were struck. The male resident was identified as the suspect's 77-year-old grandfather.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded, cleared the residence, and rendered aid to the injured. All law enforcement officers were transported to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center. The trooper was later transferred to KU Medical Center. The suspect's grandfather, 77, was also injured and taken to the hospital. McMillan was pronounced deceased at the scene.&nbsp;

As of this update, two deputies from the Osage County Sheriff's Office underwent surgery and are in good condition, and the other was discharged from the hospital. The KHP trooper and McMillan's grandfather are expected to recover.

This independent investigation aims to discover all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. In police use of force cases, the KBI releases details to the public as soon as possible. This information is preliminary in nature, and is based on evidence collected and early statements of the parties involved, witnesses, medical personnel and others. It does not represent final or thorough findings which take several weeks to complete.

When this investigation concludes case findings will be presented to the prosecutor for determination of charges. The investigation is ongoing.

Update on deputies,Trooper injured in gunfight at rural Kan. home

KANSAS CITY —One person died in an accident just after 7p.m. Friday in Kansas City, Missouri.

A medium-sized SUV was northbound from Raytown and struck a pedestrian at 46th and Blue Ridge Cut Off, according to KCPD Sergeant Phil DiMartino. The pedestrian was either walking along the roadway or attempting to cross it.

EMS pronounced the pedestrian deceased at the scene. The driver remained on scene and is fully cooperating with the investigation. 

This incident represents Fatality #58 for the year, compared to #82 at this time last year, according to DiMartino.

KCPD: Pedestrian struck and killed by SUV

BROWN COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after an arrest.

Just before 8p.m. Nov. 13, Sheriff's Deputies were attempting to locate a wanted Kansas man at 133 W. 13th Street in Horton, according to Brown County Sheriff John Merchant.

 A search warrant was granted for the residence and deputies&nbsp; executed the Warrant a short time later.&nbsp; &nbsp;Deputies found 45-year-old Gerald Adams of Horton hiding in a closet.&nbsp; He was arrested on a Brown County Felony Failure to Appear Warrant and is facing a charge of Felony Obstruction.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sheriff: Wanted Kansas suspect found hiding in closet

WYANDOTTE COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after midnight Friday in Wyandotte County.

Kansas City, Kansas police reported a vehicle was northbound in the 300 Block of North James Street at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control at a curve and continued over the bridge.

EMS transported one occupant to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The second occupant was pronounced dead at the scene.

CARBONDALE, Kan. (AP) — Four law enforcement officers were shot Saturday morning while responding to a residence in a rural area south of Topeka, Kansas.

The shooting was around 10:30 a.m. Three Osage County sheriff’s deputies and one Kansas Highway Patrol trooper were shot, Kansas Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Melissa Underwood said.

Their conditions are “still very fluid,” Underwood said.

A male suspect died from gunshot wounds, leaders from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and state Highway Patrol said. One other male was injured and taken to a hospital and is in stable condition, officials said.

Deputies and troopers were responding to a domestic violence incident north of Carbondale. They were on scene for several minutes when gunfire erupted, authorities said.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded immediately to the call of the shooting, officials said.

The area of the shooting is a rural region close to U.S. Highway 75. There is no active threat to the public, Underwood said.

--------------- OSAGE COUNTY&nbsp;– The Kansas Bureau of Investigation responded to a fatal officer-involved shooting where multiple law enforcement officers were shot.&nbsp;

The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m., at a residence north of 113th Street and S Topeka Boulevard, just north of Carbondale in Osage County, according to a media release from the KBI.

 The injured officers include three Osage County Sheriff's deputies and one Kansas Highway Patrol trooper.&nbsp;&nbsp;The deputies and the State Trooper were transported to Stormont Vail in Topeka. The Trooper was later transferred to the University of Kansas Medical Center for further treatment.

One male suspect in the home died. A second individual in the home was wounded. The KBI did not release the names of those involved.

WASHINGTON (AP) —The Trump administration is working to push out pay for federal workers that had been on hold because of the government shutdown by the middle of next week.

The money will go out in four separate tranches, depending on the agency, according to a senior administration official. The varied dates are because agencies are on different pay schedules and payroll providers.

The White House had pushed federal agencies to expedite backpay for employees, said the official, granted anonymity to discuss the administration’s plans.

The schedule is as follows: —Nov. 15: Employees at the General Services Administration and Office of Personnel Management will be paid a “supercheck” that covers the period of Oct. 1 to Nov. 1 —Nov. 16: Employees at the Departments of Energy, Health and Human Services, and Veterans Affairs will be paid for the period from Oct. 1 to Nov. 1, as well as civilian employees at the Pentagon. —Nov. 17: Employees at the Departments of Education, State, Interior, and Transportation, as well as those at the Environmental Protection Agency, NASA, National Science Foundation, Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Social Security Administration will be paid for the period from Oct. 1 to Nov. 1. —Nov. 19: Employees from the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Homeland Security, Housing and Urban Development, Justice, Labor, Treasury and the Small Business Administration will be paid for the period from Oct. 1 to Nov. 15.

Gov't shutdown back pay for some federal workers still days away

FORD COUNTY&nbsp;– The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) arrested a Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) trooper following a domestic violence investigation, according to a media release from the agency.

Just before 9p.m. Friday, KBI agents served an arrest warrant for Dillon Keller, 34, of Dodge City, at his residence. Keller was arrested on requested charges that include one count of kidnapping, one count of forgery, two counts of criminal threat, and two counts of domestic battery.

On July 2 of this year, the Dodge City Police Department requested the KBI investigate an off-duty KHP trooper and allegations of domestic violence. The alleged incidents occurred over several months leading up to the start of the investigation.

Following the arrest, Keller was booked into the Ford County Jail. He met the requirement for bond and was released just before 11p.m. Friday, according to online jail records.

The case is expected to be prosecuted by Kiowa County Attorney’s Office.

KHP Trooper accused of kidnapping, forgery and domestic battery

SEDGWICK COUNTY —The Kansas Highway Patrol continues investigating a deadly crash during a police chase in Wichita and released new details on the cause of death of the driver.

On October 31, 2025, the Wichita Police Department requested assistance from the Patrol to investigate an injury crash resulting from a police pursuit at 8th and Edgemoor in Wichita.

Officers attempted to stop a vehicle near Central and Oliver and a brief pursuit ensued. The fleeing vehicle struck another vehicle at low speed near 8th and Edgemoor. Four of the five occupants fled the suspect vehicle on foot following the crash. Three of the occupants that fled were located and taken into custody by the Wichita Police Department.

The driver of the fleeing vehicle, 16-year-old Dreshawn Hardyway, sustained critical injuries from an airbag deployment during the crash. He was provided immediate life-saving measures by officers on scene until emergency medical services arrived. Hardyway was transported to a Wichita hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on November 3, 2025.

A firearm was recovered from the suspect vehicle. Injuries to the driver were initially believed to be a gunshot wound; however, medical examinations and evidence recovered during the crash investigation confirmed otherwise.

An investigation of the crash by Kansas Highway Patrol’s Critical Highway Accident Reconstruction Team (CHART) is ongoing.

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A Kansas teen injured in a Halloween night chase and crash in Wichita died days after the incident.

On Halloween night, police were in the area of Central and Oliver in Wichita to monitor a crowd gathering after receiving unverified information suggesting potential violence in the area for a balloon release related to a homicide that occurred on Halloween in 2024.

While monitoring the event, officers observed a man they recognized as violating his probation conditions enter a vehicle with several others. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, and it attempted to flee.

A brief pursuit ensued and concluded at 8th Street and Edgemoor, where the suspect vehicle was involved in a minor collision with another vehicle. The driver of that vehicle sustained minor injuries.

Four people exited the suspect vehicle and fled on foot. Officers were able to detain three of the individuals, who were subsequently booked into the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center (JIAC) for obstruction. A fourth suspect remained at large.

A fifth male, who was the driver identified as 16-year-old&nbsp;Dreshawn A Hardyway, was found inside the vehicle with what was initially believed to be a gunshot wound. Officers provided immediate life-saving measures until EMS arrived. He was transported to a local hospital died November 3.&nbsp;Police recovered a firearm from the vehicle.&nbsp;

In accordance with Wichita Police Department policy related to vehicle pursuits resulting in crashes, the Kansas Highway Patrol was called in to investigate the traffic collision.

All five individuals in the suspect vehicle were juveniles including two 16-year-old boys, two 15-year-old boys and a 14-year-old boy.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported police were in pursuit of a southbound 2008 Chevy Malibu driven by Dreshawn A&nbsp;Hardyway, 16, Wichita, in the 800 Block of North Edgemoor Street. The Malibu turned west on East 8th Street and struck a 2021 Chrysler Voyager driven by Christopher B.&nbsp;Paramo, 23, Wichita, who was&nbsp;&nbsp;stopped waiting to turn onto North Edgemoor Street.

EMS transported Hardyway to Wesley Medical Center where he died November 3.&nbsp; Two 14-year-olds were not injured. Paramo was not injured. The drivers and occupants in both vehicles were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

KHP updates details in death of teen in Halloween chase, crash

The Kansas City, Missouri Health Department was notified of a confirmed case of measles in a&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;resident who&nbsp;was present&nbsp;in&nbsp;a&nbsp;terminal&nbsp;at the Kansas City International Airport&nbsp;(MCI)&nbsp;on November 5 from approximately 2 a.m.&nbsp;until noon,&nbsp;and&nbsp;on November 10,&nbsp;from&nbsp;2 a.m. until 4&nbsp;a.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Measles is a highly infectious respiratory disease caused by a virus.&nbsp;Measles&nbsp;is spread through the air by breathing, coughing, or sneezing. Measles can be spread to others from four days before to four days after the rash appears. Measles cannot be spread to others by&nbsp;an&nbsp;exposed&nbsp;person&nbsp;unless that person develops&nbsp;measles&nbsp;disease&nbsp;symptoms.&nbsp;

If you are up to date on your Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine, your risk of getting sick is&nbsp;very low.&nbsp;The best way to prevent measles is to get your MMR vaccination. Those not vaccinated or infants under the age of 1 who are too young to be vaccinated are at the highest risk for contracting measles.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We want people to stay calm but stay aware,”&nbsp;said Dr. Marvia Jones, Director of the Kansas City Health Department.&nbsp;“Measles is highly contagious, but vaccination offers strong protection. If you&nbsp;haven’t&nbsp;received your MMR vaccine, now is the time to get it.&nbsp;I also&nbsp;urge&nbsp;people to avoid travel if they&nbsp;haven’t&nbsp;been vaccinated.”&nbsp;

Any exposed person would be expected to develop symptoms between November 12&nbsp;-&nbsp;December 1. The symptoms of measles&nbsp;generally include&nbsp;a rash that appears 7-21 days&nbsp;after exposure. Measles symptoms typically begin with:&nbsp;

Three to five days after symptoms begin, a rash typically appears. The rash typically appears as flat, red spots that initially break out on the face, near the hairline, and then spread downward to the neck, trunk, arms, legs, and feet.&nbsp;

Health department: Potential measles exposure at KCI

WASHINGTON (AP) — The most advanced U.S. aircraft carrier&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/aircraft-carriers-trump-venezuela-middle-east-a458b9c4f1a5690e19d7c532dd6b7fd7">is expected to reach the waters</a>&nbsp;off&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/venezuela">Venezuela</a>&nbsp;in days, a flex of American military power not seen in Latin America for generations.

Experts disagree on the possibility that American warplanes will catapult off the USS Gerald R. Ford to bomb targets inside Venezuela and further pressure authoritarian President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/nicolas-maduro">Nicolás Maduro</a>&nbsp;to step down. Still, whether it may serve that purpose or only patrols the Caribbean as the U.S. blows up boats it accuses of trafficking drugs, the presence of the 100,000-ton warship alone is sending a message.

“This is the anchor of what it means to have U.S. military power once again in Latin America,” said Elizabeth Dickinson, the International Crisis Group’s senior analyst for the Andes region. “And it has raised a lot of anxieties in Venezuela but also throughout the region. I think everyone is watching this with sort of bated breath to see just how willing the U.S. is to really use military force.”

The Ford’s impending arrival is a major moment in the Trump administration’s campaign in South America, which it describes as a counterdrug operation. It escalates the already massive buildup of military firepower in the region, with added pressure from bomber training runs near the Venezuelan coast, CIA operations that have been publicly authorized inside the country and boat strikes in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean that have killed over 75 people.
