SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Mike Moustakas is going to retire with Kansas City after spending 13 years in the majors and winning the World Series with the Royals in 2015.

The Royals announced&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Royals/status/1896611606706151816" target="_blank">Moustakas’ retirement</a>&nbsp;on Monday. The 36-year-old infielder will sign a one-day contract with his first big league team on May 31, and he will be honored before Kansas City’s home game against Detroit that day.

Moustakas hit .247 with 215 homers and 683 RBIs in 1,427 games, also playing for Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Colorado and the Los Angeles Angels. The three-time All-Star appeared in his last major league game with the Angels on Sept. 30, 2023.

Moustakas was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2007 amateur draft. He broke into the majors with Kansas City in 2011.

He became a key performer for the Royals during a memorable stretch for the franchise. He hit .284 with 22 homers and 82 RBIs in 147 games in 2015, helping the team win the AL Central. Then he drove in eight runs in the postseason as the Royals won the World Series for the first time since 1985.

Moustakas bashed a career-high 38 homers for Kansas City in 2017. He set a career best with 95 RBIs while playing for the Royals and Brewers in 2018.

DENTON, Texas (AP) — Atin Wright had 21 points to help North Texas hold on for a 68-66 victory over Wichita State on Monday night, upping its win streak to six.

Wright shot 7 for 13 (4 for 7 from 3-point range) and 3 of 4 from the free-throw line for the Mean Green (22-6, 13-3 American Athletic Conference). Brenen Lorient had 15 points and Latrell Jossell scored 13.

The Shockers (17-12, 7-9) were led by Xavier Bell with 19 points. Harlond Beverly added 16 points and Bijan Cortes scored nine.

North Texas went into halftime leading Wichita State 31-28. Jossell put up 10 points in the half. North Texas pulled off the victory after a 9-0 second-half run erased a four-point deficit and gave them the lead at 52-47 with 9:33 remaining. Wright scored 14 second-half points.

North Texas is a game behind 16th-ranked Memphis for the conference lead and closes out the regular season at home against Charlotte on Thursday before traveling to play Temple on Sunday.

HOUSTON (AP) — L.J. Cryer scored 22 points and No. 3 Houston won its ninth straight game with a 65-59 victory over Kansas on Monday night.

Emanuel Sharp added 12 points off the bench, including two free throws that pushed Houston's lead to 63-59 with 20 seconds left. The Cougars (26-4, 18-1 Big 12) went 4 of 4 from the foul line down the stretch.

Cryer had 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting in the first half as Houston took a 30-27 lead into the break.

Milos Uzan finished with 10 points for the Cougars, who had already clinched their second consecutive outright Big 12 regular-season title. Mylik Wilson had 10 points, six assists and five rebounds.

Houston shot 35% from the field and was 7 of 20 on 3-pointers.

Hunter Dickinson had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the scuffling Jayhawks (19-11, 10-9), who shot 45%. KJ Adams Jr. added 15 points and David Coit had 14 off the bench.

Kansas: The Jayhawks fell to 3-3 against top-10 teams and 4-3 versus AP Top 25 teams this season.

Houston: The Cougars won for the 22nd time in 23 games and continued to boost their resume for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, improving to 8-4 in Quad 1 matchups.

After Sharp’s two free throws, Kansas guard Dajuan Harris Jr. slipped while trying to catch the inbounds pass, and Cryer stole it. He was fouled and made two free throws to ice the win.

Houston forced 20 turnovers and converted them into 18 points.

Houston visits Baylor on Saturday to close the regular season. Kansas hosts No. 24 Arizona the same day.

🏀 March Madness: How to watch and what to watch for in the 2025 NCAA Tournament

The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) basketball regular season comes to a close on Wednesday evening with six games to play in women's action and six more in men's play.

There are still several different scenarios that can take place in each standings, as the Region VI Tournament brackets will be revealed following action on Wednesday.

The Region VI Tournament first-round games will be played on Saturday.

Both HutchCC women's and men's teams have received a first-round bye and will open postseason play on Tuesday, March 11 at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons close out the regular-season on Wednesday against Dodge City. The women will tipoff at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30 p.m.&nbsp;

The women's game will determine who wins the regular-season title and who claims the No. 1 seed for the Region VI Tournament. With a HutchCC win, the Blue Dragons and the Conqs tie the regular-season title.

The men's game doesn't have much impact as far as the Blue Dragons go, as HutchCC is locked in to the No. 4 seed. Dodge City needs a win to earn a first-round home game on Saturday.

🏀 KJCCC standings with 1 game remaining

The Sterling College women’s basketball team continued its KCAC tournament run with another upset on the road, as the Warriors, the No. 5 seed, knocked off No. 2 seed Tabor 83-64 on Saturday evening in Hillsboro.

The Warriors will now face No. 5 Friends (19-11) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the KCAC tournament championship game at the Garvey Center at Friends University in Wichita. The winner receives an automatic bid to the NAIA tournament.

Sterling (20-10) took down No. 3 Evangel in the quarterfinals, 97-63, in Springfield, Missouri, before knocking off the Bluejays on Saturday.

In the semifinal win, Korynn Clason led the Warriors with 27 points and seven rebounds. Kali Briar scored 15, while Alissa Heskamp and McKenna Vogl each added 14.

Of the 10 players who saw action in the semifinal win, eight are from Kansas: Briar (Sterling), Heskamp (Spearville), Alex Bearup (Wichita), Vogl (Pretty Prairie), Trinity Lutters (Hoisington), Evie Gill (St. George), Kayla Morris (Sterling) and Bailey Young (Pretty Prairie).

The Warriors enter Tuesday’s championship game having won seven of their last eight games, with the only loss coming on the road at Evangel, which Sterling avenged five days later in the KCAC quarterfinals.

Sterling split its regular-season meetings with Friends, losing in Wichita on Jan. 8, 78-64, before winning the second game in Sterling, 83-80, on Feb. 13.

The winner receives an automatic bid to the NAIA tournament.Sterling (20-10) took down No. 3 Evangel in the quarterfinals, 97-63, in Springfield, Missouri, before knocking off the Bluejays on Saturday.In the semifinal win, Korynn Clason led the Warriors with 27 points and seven rebounds. Kali Briar scored 15, while Alissa Heskamp and McKenna Vogl each added 14.Of the 10 players who saw action in the semifinal win, eight are from Kansas: Briar (Sterling), Heskamp (Spearville), Alex Bearup (Wichita), Vogl (Pretty Prairie), Trinity Lutters (Hoisington), Evie Gill (St. George), Kayla Morris (Sterling) and Bailey Young (Pretty Prairie).The Warriors enter Tuesday’s championship game having won seven of their last eight games, with the only loss coming on the road at Evangel, which Sterling avenged five days later in the KCAC quarterfinals.Sterling split its regular-season meetings with Friends, losing in Wichita on Jan. 8, 78-64, before winning the second game in Sterling, 83-80, on Feb. 13.The championship game will be streamed on the <a href="https://www.kcacnetwork.com/friends/?B=2213616">KCAC Network</a>.

First day of spring sports for high school student-athletes

PARK CITY, Kan. – The Hutchinson High School boys and girls wrestling teams competed in the Class 5A state championships on Friday and Saturday, sending nine wrestlers to the tournament and finishing with four on the podium.

Seniors Kade Smith (175 pounds), sophomores Cruz Cannon (113) and Max Harris (157), and freshman Aadia Brown (100) each placed in the top six of their respective weight classes.

Smith capped his high school career with a third-place finish and a 41-4 season record. On the opening day of the tournament, he moved into second place on Hutchinson’s all-time wins list, surpassing Salthawk alumnus and current Central Missouri head coach Cody Garcia. On Saturday, Smith entered the final day of competition four wins shy of the program’s all-time record, held by Romero Cotton. In the third-place match, he pinned Bishop Carroll’s Elijah Means to tie Cotton’s record with 136 career victories.

In the boys' tournament, Cannon and Harris battled through the consolation bracket to earn fifth and third place, respectively. On the girls’ side, Brown secured a sixth-place finish in her debut season.

COFFEYVILLE &ndash; Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/mazza_antony_9347">Anthony Mazza</a>&nbsp;had three hits and three pitchers combined to hold Coffeyville to four hits as the No. 21-ranked Hutchinson Community College baseball team to a 6-2 victory in Game 3 of a four-game series over the Coffeyville Red Ravens on Saturday at Walter Johnson Park.
Game 2 was frustrating for the Blue Dragons as they stranded 12 runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the seventh and eighth innings, in a 2-0 loss to the Red Ravens in the series finale on Saturday.
The Blue Dragons (11-2) and Red Ravens (9-2) split their four-game series. The Dragons travel to play Hesston College on a single nine-inning game on Tuesday in Hesston. Hutchinson then opens Jayhawk West play on Thursday in Dodge City.
Mazza had hits in both games on Saturday to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
GAME 1 RECAP &ndash; Hutchinson 6, Coffeyville 2 Leading 3-2 entering the seventh inning, the Blue Dragons loaded the bases with no out.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/tygart_baker_ked6">C.J. Reid</a>&nbsp;hit a sacrifice fly to score Mazza, then pinch-hitter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/fegen_scotty_n1yk">Scotty Fegen</a>&nbsp;delivered a two-out, two-run double that gave the Dragons a 6-2 lead.
That gave three Blue Dragon pitchers plenty of run support.
<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/wolcott_jake_0h6q">Jake Wolcott</a>&nbsp;(1-0) started and got his first win as a Blue Dragon. Wolcott allowed two hits and one run with three strikeouts and two walks in four full innings.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/ainsworth_seth_huwf">Seth Ainsworth</a>&nbsp;allowed one run and one hit with two strikeouts. Collin Flores had a strikeout in a scoreless seventh inning.
The Blue Dragons out-hit Coffeyville 11-4.
Mazza went 3 for 4 for his 10th multi-hit game of the season. He had an RBI double in the third inning that tied the game at 1-1.

The Dragons were limited to four hits, but had 17 total baserunners thanks to 10 Coffeyville walks. The Dragons stranded 12 runners on base.

Three Blue Dragon pitchers held Coffeyville to four hits and two runs.

GOODLAND &ndash; Sophomore pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/tomlinson_morgan_0v0v">Morgan Tomlinson</a>&nbsp;and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/williams_mia_83rx">Mia Williams</a>&nbsp;combined for the Hutchinson Community College softball team's first no-hitter in two seasons on Saturday during a Jayhawk Conference doubleheader sweep of Fort Hays Tech Northwest.
The combined no-hitter came in Game 1 as Hutchinson run-ruled Fort Hays Tech Northwest 21-0 in five innings. Then freshmen pitchers&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/thomas_aubree_o0p2">Aubree Thomas</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/schmidt_jessica_edec">Jessica Schmidt</a>&nbsp;teamed up for a one-hit shutout in a 20-0 victory in five innings.
The Blue Dragons are now 8-4 overall and 4-0 to start the KJCCC season. The Dragons travel to play Butler on Wednesday. Fort Hays Tech Northwest fell to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the KJCCC.
The no-hitter by Tomlinson and Williams was the first for the Blue Dragons since a combined no-hitter by Morgan Pennycuff, Kiersten Wietze, Korri Lies and Riley Wertz against Northwest Tech on April 19, 2023.
Tomlinson pitched the first three innings and allowed only one walk. Tomlinson, who used just 35 pitches, struck out a career-high eight batters. Her previous career high was six.
Williams struck out a season-high four batters and walked one in her two innings where she used 31 pitches.
This is the 12th no-hitter in the Jaime Rose era.
GAME 1 RECAP &ndash; Hutchinson 21, Fort Hays Tech Northwest 0 (5 innings) Sophomore shortstop&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/backhaus_bailey_44zk">Bailey Backhaus</a>&nbsp;tied a Blue Dragon single-game record scoring five runs in the first game. Backhaus was 4 for 5 and reached base all five times. She drove in three runs and stole three bases.
Backhaus tied eight others for the single-game runs scored record.
The Dragons had 18 hits and took advantage of 10 Tiger errors and six Tiger walks.
Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/dice_emily_75aj">Emily Dice</a>&nbsp;had a career-high four hits, going 4 for 4 with a single-game-record-tying three doubles. Dice tied 12 other Blue Dragons for the single-game school record for doubles. The Dragon second baseman had a career-high four runs scored and drove in two with a two-run double in a seven-run second inning.
The Blue Dragons' seven combined doubles tied for fourth most in team single-game history. The two triples tied for third in single-game history.
<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/kruger_kaibryn_wwcp">Kaibryn Kruger</a>&nbsp;went 3 for 4 with a single, double, triple with a season-high four RBIs. Kruger had an RBI double and RBI triple.
<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/stauffer_gabby_t8qf">Gabby Stauffer</a>&nbsp;tied season highs with season highs with three hits and four RBIs. Stauffer was 3 for 5 with a double, triple and three runs scored.

🥎 Tomlinson, Williams combine for Blue Dragon no-hitter 

SALINA, Kan. — Buhler High School junior Macey Parks had quite the day on Saturday, claiming the class 4A state title at 145 pounds at Tony's Pizza Events Center.&nbsp;

The win also marked Parks' 100th career victory as a Crusader.

Parks defeated Taya Rowley of Chapman, 6-5.&nbsp;

She jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first period thanks to a takedown and a nearfall. Rowley pulled within 6-2 after the first period, and then 6-3 after the second period. Rowley scored on an escape and after a stalling penalty to pull within the 6-5 margin.

Parks finishes her junior year with a 35-7 record.&nbsp;

On the boys side, Buhler had two in the finals, Cruz Hershberger and Sammy Hershberger, each of them finished as state runner-ups. Luke Kerns finished in fifth place.&nbsp;

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Audi Crooks put Iowa State on her shoulders in the third quarter, scoring 14 of her career-high 36 points as the Cyclones blew past No. 14 Kansas State 85-63 in their regular season finale on Sunday.

With a one-point lead to start the second half, Crooks, a 6-foot-3 sophomore center, was 6-for-6 from the floor plus two free throws in the third quarter as the Cyclones outscored K-State 27-15 to take over the game.

The loss scrambles the Big 12 Conference standings, knocking the Wildcats out of a tie with No. 21 Oklahoma State for the No. 3 seed into the tournament and into a three-way tie for fourth with No. 18 West Virginia and Utah. OSU knocked off Kansas Sunday to clinch the third seed and the Mountaineers, who beat Kansas State head-to-head, get the No. 4 seed and a bye into the quarterfinals. Kansas State is the No. 5 seed and the Utes the No. 6, and each will have a first-round bye. Iowa State (21-10, 12-6) is the No. 7 seed, also with a first-round tournament bye.

Crooks, the fastest Cyclone in program history to reach 1,000 career points, has now scored in double figures in 63 straight games, one shy of the Iowa State record held by Angie Welle. She was 14 of 18 from the field, 8 of 11 from the line and pulled down 10 rebounds. Senior Emily Ryan scored 17 points and dished 10 assists in her final regular-season game. Kelsey Joens added 10 points and Addy Brown pulled down 10 rebounds to go with her nine points.

Oklahoma State won’t play in the Big 12 Tournament until the quarterfinals as a top-4 team. The Cowgirls’s 24 victories are their most since winning 25 times in the 2013-14 season.

Gray sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Oklahoma State a 22-19 lead at halftime. She opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer for a two-possession lead. The Cowgirls upped their lead to eight before Kansas battled back to tie it twice — the final time at 51-all on a layup by S’Mya Nichols with 2:04 remaining. Gray answered with her final 3-pointer 40 seconds later and Oklahoma stayed in front from there.

Nichols scored 16 to lead the Jayhawks (16-13, 6-12), who finished 11th. All 16 teams will play for the Big 12 title. Placers five through eight receive a first-round bye.

Oklahoma State led 15-7 after one quarter. Kansas held the Cowgirls to four points in the second quarter before Gray’s 3-pointer.

Isaiah Gomez turned a 5-3 Wichita State lead into a 6-5 deficit with a three-run homer off WSU reliever&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/caleb-anderson/9173" rel="smarttag" rev="9173" data-airgap-id="57">Caleb Anderson</a></dfn>&nbsp;(0-2), and two batters later Marcos Rosales added a solo shot of his own as the Titans (3-8) built a multi-run lead of their own into the late innings. Four Cal State Fullerton relievers combined for six shutout innings to close out the game, including two scoreless frames from Dylan Goff (1-1) and a 1-2-3 ninth from Gavin Meyer to earn his first save of the season. WICHITA, Kan. &ndash;&nbsp;Wichita State's seventh inning rally came up two runs short as they fell to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium. &nbsp; SDSU took the early lead with a RBI single in the top of the first inning, but Shocker starter&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/chloe-barber/9310" rel="smarttag" rev="9310" data-airgap-id="59">Chloe Barber</a></dfn>&nbsp;avoided disaster by leaving the bases full of Jackrabbits to minimize the threat. &nbsp; In the second, the Jacks added to their lead, scoring two runs in their half to take a 3-0 lead. &nbsp; SDSU continued their good day at the plate in the third inning, adding another two runs to jump out to a 5-0 lead. &nbsp; In the bottom half of the third, the Shockers worked the bases loaded with two outs and&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/taylor-sedlacek/9318" rel="smarttag" rev="9318" data-airgap-id="60">Taylor Sedlacek</a></dfn>&nbsp;drew a walk to get WSU on the board, making it a 5-1 game, but that's all they would get. &nbsp; The Jackrabbits got the run right back in the top of the fourth with a solo home run to retake a five-run lead, but&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/ryley-nihart/9325" rel="smarttag" rev="9325" data-airgap-id="61">Ryley Nihart</a></dfn>&nbsp;struck out three Jacks in a row to end the inning. &nbsp; In the bottom of the fourth,&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/jodie-epperson/9323" rel="smarttag" rev="9323" data-airgap-id="62">Jodie Epperson</a></dfn>&nbsp;recorded the Shockers' first hit, a double off the wall in left center, and later came in to score on an RBI single by&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/camryn-compton/9311" rel="smarttag" rev="9311" data-airgap-id="63">Camryn Compton</a></dfn>, making it 6-2. &nbsp; After a scoreless fifth and sixth inning, the Shockers loaded the bases with only one out, and Sedlacek broke through with an RBI single to left. Nihart was excellent in relief, tossing 4.1 innings, allowing just one run on the solo homer. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — David N’Guessan had 21 points and eight rebounds and Kansas State defeated Colorado 65-56 on Sunday to snap a four-game losing streak.

Kansas State led by 11 points at halftime, then N'Guessan had five points in a 7-0 run that gave the Wildcats a 46-29 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the game. The Wildcats led by double digits for most of the remainder. Colorado got within eight points once and later the score was 63-54 after Sebastian Rancik hit two free throws for the Buffaloes with a minute to go.

Macaleab Rich made two free throws for K-State with 48 seconds left and Rancik's dunk with six seconds remaining finished off the scoring.

There was one tie, no lead changes, and Kansas State led for 38 1/2 minutes.

Brendan Hausen scored 11 points and Dug McDaniel had 10 points and seven assists for Kansas State (14-15, 8-10 Big 12).

Colorado (11-18, 2-16 Big 12) got 11 points from RJ Smith and 10 each from Rancik and Bangot Dak.

The Wildcats took an early 12-2 lead, thanks to a 10-0 run in which Colorado committed three shooting fouls, good for five made K-State free throws. The Wildcats built a 33-17 lead with two minutes left in the half before Colorado scored the last five to trail 33-22 at the break.

It was the first meeting between the two teams since Colorado left the Big 12 after the 2001 season.

With two games left in the regular season, Kansas State is tied for ninth place and Colorado is last.

The Wildcats visit Cincinnati on Wednesday and finish at home against Iowa State on Saturday.

Colorado visits Texas Tech on Wednesday and finishes at home against TCU on Saturday.
