HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 2 Hutchinson opened Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play in emphatic fashion Saturday night, overwhelming Garden City 70-0 at Gowans Stadium.
The Blue Dragons piled up 583 yards of total offense, including 415 on the ground, while the Hutchinson defense forced three turnovers and held the Broncbusters to just 101 total yards.
Hutchinson improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in KJCCC play with its eighth consecutive victory over Garden City. The 70-point margin was the largest in the 86-game series, surpassing Hutchinson's 68-0 victory in 1948. The 70 points were also the most scored by either team in series history.
The victory gave Hutchinson a 46-40 lead in the all-time series.
"We had a lot of guys stepping up and making some big-time carries," Hutchinson head coach Drew Dallas said. "J.B. Price started off the game pretty electric, just with what he was able to do with the ball in his hands. Really all those other guys maximized their opportunities and their carries."
Price led a dominant Hutchinson ground game with 192 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries. Jayden Hall added 95 yards and two rushing touchdowns on nine attempts, Rayvelle Leak rushed for 58 yards and two scores, and Terrell King finished with 53 yards and a touchdown.
The 415 rushing yards were Hutchinson's most since the Blue Dragons ran for 460 yards against Ellsworth in 2024.
"The big boys up front played with a purpose and some physicality tonight," Dallas said. "I thought we did a great job of winning the line of scrimmage and creating movement. Anytime you can do that, you're going to have success."
Hutchinson wasted little time taking control.
Tre Darden intercepted Garden City quarterback Tyrell Lewis on the Broncbusters' second offensive play, and Price scored on a 33-yard run eight seconds later for a 7-0 lead.
Randy Phillips connected with Hall for a 29-yard touchdown later in the opening quarter to push the lead to 14-0. The shutout first quarter extended Hutchinson's streak to 12 consecutive games without allowing a first-quarter point.
Price added a 3-yard touchdown early in the second quarter after the Blue Dragons recovered a Garden City fumble. Leak then broke loose for a 42-yard score to make it 28-0.
Garden City put together its best scoring threat late in the half, driving 87 yards to the Hutchinson 7. Timothy Abraham ended the threat by intercepting Anthony McQueen in the end zone with one second remaining.
"Anytime you can get a goose egg on the board, that's pretty special," Dallas said. "They made some good plays and we gave up a big third-down conversion, but anytime you get a chance to keep them out of the end zone, however you do it, that's what you want."
Hutchinson put the game away quickly after halftime.
Price capped an 84-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run before Phillips connected with Karlan Ransom for a 41-yard score. Hall followed with a 49-yard touchdown run, giving Hutchinson three touchdowns in a span of 3 minutes, 22 seconds and a 49-0 lead.
Ransom finished with two catches for 48 yards, highlighted by his touchdown grab.
"That catch he made down our sideline was really, really special," Dallas said. "Probably an underthrown ball, and Randy owes him on that one because if he doesn't go up and steal that, I don't think we like the results. Seeing him make that play with the ball in the air, coming down and then staying on his feet and scoring was pretty special."
Phillips completed 8 of 13 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Bravin Powell was 3-for-3 for 37 yards as Hutchinson finished with 168 passing yards.
Hall scored his third touchdown of the night on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter. King added a 38-yard touchdown and Leak closed the scoring with a 5-yard run with 1:08 remaining.
Parker Grizzell converted all 10 extra-point attempts.
Hutchinson's defense limited Garden City to 49 rushing yards and 52 passing yards. The Broncbusters completed just 6 of 21 passes, were 2-for-16 on third down and allowed five sacks.
Garden City was shut out for the first time since a 38-0 loss to Iowa Western on Oct. 26, 2024.
Dallas said the opportunity to get extensive playing time for Hutchinson's younger players through the first three games could prove valuable as the season progresses.
"At some point in the season, they're going to have to step up and play really, really meaningful reps," Dallas said. "When you get the opportunity to get those in games like tonight, those are invaluable opportunities for them."
Hutchinson returns to the road next Saturday for a KJCCC matchup against Butler in El Dorado.
Dallas cautioned his team against becoming satisfied after three lopsided victories to begin the season.
"I heard a great quote this week: 'The best time to kill an alligator is after he's eaten because he's satisfied,'" Dallas said. "We can't be satisfied with where we're at. We've got to continue to attack and build on where we're at.
"We can be pleased with the results we've had up to this point, but nothing matters except for the next game."
