Freshman outside hitter Giovanna Monteiro tallied 20 or more kills in a match for the third time this season to lead the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team to a Jayhawk Conference sweep of the Cloud County Thunderbirds on Wednesday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
The Blue Dragons hit .300 or better in a match for the third time this season in defeating the Thunderbirds 25-16, 25-12, 25-22.
Hutchinson is now 8-5 overall and 2-0 in the KJCCC. The Blue Dragons play four matches at the NJC Classic this Friday and Saturday in Sterling, Colorado, and then will play host to No. 16-ranked Colby at 6 p.m. on Monday at the Sports Arena.
The Blue Dragons had a three-set season-high 50 kills on 118 attacks to finish hitting .305 for the match. The Blue Dragons held Cloud County to .124 hitting with 26 kills on 97 attacks. The Dragons out-dug the T-Birds 51-43 and had nine service aces to Cloud's three. Each team had two blocks.
Monteiro hit .500 or better for the fourth time this season with 20 kills and only two attack errors in 31 total attacks for a .581 attack percentage. She just missed a double-double adding nine digs.
Sophomore Lauren Vasquez had nine kills on .185 hitting. She also had two block assists.
Freshman Julia Macedo had seven kills on .583 hitting in two sets.
Freshman setter Luisa Richa had 39 assists, eight digs and four service aces. Freshman Ashley Scott had three ace serves.
Freshman libero Arianna Delgado had a team-high 10 digs and Scott had eight digs.
Simira Bousri had 11 kills on .212 hitting to lead Cloud County.
SET 1: The Blue Dragons hit .528 and sided out at an 81-percent clip in the opening set. Monteiro had 10 kills on 15 attacks in the opening set. The Dragons jumped out to a 5-0 lead after back-to-back Richa ace serves. Cloud got as close as 13-11, but following a Hutchinson timeout, the Dragons scored on 4 of the next 5 rallies, taking a 17-12 lead after a Vasquez kill and prompting a Cloud timeout. A Monteiro kill upped the lead to 20-14 and another Monteiro kill got the Dragons to the brink of the first set at 24-16. Vasquez's kill on the first set point closed out the set.
SET 2: The only time Hutchinson trailed in the match was a 1-0 in the second set. A 5-0 run capped by a Vasquez kill erased that deficit. The Dragons wound up leading 12-4 after a Cloud net violation. The Blue Dragons held Cloud to a negative .074 hitting in the second set. Leading 16-8, the Dragons closed out the set on a 9-4 run with four different players collecting kills and Vasquez and Ty'lia Davis teaming up for a stuff block.
SET 3: Kelsi Maier's kill capped a 6-0 Hutchinson run to open the third set. The lead reached 11-4 on a Scott service ace. A 4-0 run capped by back-to-back Scott ace serves upped the margin to 10 points at 22-12. Cloud County went on a 7-0 run that turned into a 10-2 run to pull within 24-22 before the Dragons finally closed out the match.
