GREAT BEND – The Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team battled back from a two-goal deficit to earn a Jayhawk Conference point on Wednesday in the Blue Dragons' league opener.

The Blue Dragons dominated possession in the second half battled back to earn a 2-2 draw against the Barton Cougars.

Hutchinson is now 1-3-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the KJCCC (1 point). The Blue Dragons play host to Seward County at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Salthawk Soccer Complex. Barton is now 2-0-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the KJCCC.

The Blue Dragons out-shot the Cougars 22-7 in the game, but a pair of first-half penalty kicks for goals staked Barton to a 2-0 lead at halftime.

After missing on a pair of prime scoring chances in the first half, sophomore Olivia Tamaki and freshman Ariadna Zwenger scored goals to tie the match at 2-2 with 29:43 to play in regulation.

Playing in intermittent rain throughout the game, the Blue Dragons out-shot the Cougars 10-3 in the second half, hitting two posts in the final 45 minutes.

Blue Dragon freshman goalkeeper Hanna Helshani (0-3-1) had one save. Barton keeper Lucie Gillig (2-0-2) made six saves.

A pair of defensive breakdowns in the first half led to Barton offensive chances that both led to Hutchinson fouls in the penalty box. That led to penalty kick goals from Maki Kimura in the 10th minute and Gwladys Dumont in the 32nd minute and Barton led 2-0 at halftime.

The Blue Dragons scored with 40:38 remaining in the second half when Poppy Smith slipped a pass through to Tamaki, who beat the Barton keeper one vs one to the lower right corner of the goal from 8 yards out to cut the Dragon deficit to 2-1. The goal was Tamaki's second of the season.

Hutchinson tied the game at 2-2 with 29:43 remaining when Zwenger laced a shot past Gillig for her fourth goal of the season. Isabell Van Fleet was credited with the assist.

Tamaki and Van Fleet both hit posts with shots in the second half that kept the Dragons from taking the lead.

The Blue Dragons are now 22-7-7 all-time against Barton. The Dragons are 16-4-2 all-time in KJCCC opening games.
