HAYS, Kan. — The Hutchinson High Salthawks boys basketball team took a four-point lead into the fourth quarter of their sub-state opener Wednesday night, but Hays High responded with a 5-0 run to start the final period and pulled away late for a 48-43 victory, ending Hutchinson’s season.

Salthawks senior Terrell King led all scorers with 22 points, but late turnovers and missed opportunities proved costly for Hutchinson (10-11). Taishaun Govain, playing in his final high school game, finished with nine points. Jalen Crable and Lamar Govain each added four, while Levi Kepler and Tremell Walker chipped in with putback baskets.

Hutchinson went cold offensively down the stretch, sending Hays’ Johnny Cano to the free-throw line, where he hit 6 of 8 attempts to finish with a team-high 13 points. Dawson Ruder also scored 13 for the Indians (13-8), who advance to face Andover in Saturday’s sub-state championship.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bailey Maupin scored 12 points, Kilah Freelon scored eight of her nine points in the fourth quarter and No. 14 seed Texas Tech beat 11th-seeded Kansas 57-53 on Wednesday night in a Big 12 Championship first-round game.

Texas Tech (16-16) will move on to face No. 6 seed Utah in the second round on Thursday.

Kansas trailed by 11 points midway through the third quarter but used a 15-3 run to take a 46-45 lead with 5:14 remaining in the fourth. Brittany Harshaw hit two 3s and scored eight points during the stretch. Freelon scored the next four points and Maupin added a free throw to give Texas Tech a 51-46 lead with 1:05 to play.

Laia Conesa’s 3-pointer with 13 seconds left pulled the Jayhawks to 55-53 before Maupin added two more free throws to seal it. Freelon and Maupin combined for 13 of the Red Raiders’ 15 fourth-quarter points while Harshaw finished with eight of the Jayhawks’ 18 points.

Denae Fritz and Jasmine Shavers added 11 points apiece for Texas Tech. Maupin shot 2 of 10 from the floor that included a 3-pointer and was 7 of 9 from the free-throw line.

Harshaw scored 15 points to lead Kansas (16-14). Regan Williams added 13 points and Conesa finished with 12.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday at the Sports Arena, falling to Dodge City 76-66.

The Blue Dragons closed the regular season with a 19-11 overall record and a 15-9 mark in the Jayhawk Conference.

Hutchinson earned the No. 4 seed in the Region VI Tournament and will receive a first-round bye. The Blue Dragons will play in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Sports Arena, facing the winner of No. 5 Butler vs. No. 12 Pratt. Butler and Pratt will meet in El Dorado on Saturday.

Hutchinson trailed 40-27 at halftime but cut the deficit to two with under five minutes remaining. However, the Blue Dragons were unable to complete the comeback.

Dodge City (14-16, 11-13) won its fourth straight game, shooting 43% from the field and making seven 3-pointers.

Hutchinson struggled offensively, shooting 35% overall and hitting just 3 of 17 attempts from beyond the arc. Bo Aldridge led the Blue Dragons with a career-high 29 points, while DJ Dudley added 18 points and nine rebounds.

Jayse Boatwright paced Dodge City with 22 points. Mynor Strong contributed 19, and Derrick Rivers added 14.

The victory secured a share of the Jayhawk Conference title for the Blue Dragons, marking the 14th in program history.

Despite the win, Hutchinson (27-3, 21-3) lost the tiebreaker to Dodge City (26-4, 21-3), giving the Conquistadors the No. 1 seed in the Region VI Tournament. The Blue Dragons will enter as the No. 2 seed.

After an 18-18 tie at the end of the first quarter, Dodge City outscored Hutchinson by 10 in the second quarter to take a 38-28 halftime lead. Both teams scored 13 points in the third, giving the Conquistadors a 51-41 advantage heading into the fourth.

The Blue Dragons shot 50% from the field in their 21-point fourth-quarter rally. They trailed by as many as 12 early in the period before mounting their comeback.

Kahlen Norris hit back-to-back shots to tie the game at 60 with 44 seconds left. Dodge City briefly regained the lead with two free throws, but Brynne Katcher muscled in a contested layup with three seconds remaining to tie the game at 62. The Conquistadors had a final shot attempt, but it missed, sending the game to overtime.

Hutchinson controlled the extra period, outscoring Dodge City 13-5 after the Conquistadors scored the first basket. Landon Forbes led the Blue Dragons in overtime with seven points, while Hailey Jackson added six.

The Blue Dragons capitalized on Dodge City's 24 turnovers, converting them into 28 points, while committing just eight turnovers themselves.

Jackson led Hutchinson with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Forbes added 19 points, seven assists, and five steals, while Norris contributed 10 points and five boards.

Dodge City, which led for over 38 minutes of the game, was paced by Shorna Preston’s double-double of 16 points and 16 rebounds. Layla-J Cameron also scored 16 points.

Hutchinson will host the winner of No. 7 Cloud County vs. No. 10 Colby on Tuesday, March 11, at 5:30 p.m. The Thunderbirds and Trojans face off Saturday at 2 p.m. in Concordia.

CINCINNATI (AP) — David N'Guessan had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Dug McDaniel added 13 points, and Kansas State defeated Cincinnati 54-49 on Wednesday night.

N'Guessan scored eight points and McDaniel scored six in a key stretch of the second half in which K-State (15-15, 9-10 Big 12) outscored Cincinnati 14-8 to build a seven-point lead. The run culminated in a layup and a jumper by N'Guessan and a jumper from McDaniel to give the Wildcats a 52-45 lead with four minutes remaining.

The Wildcats cooled off and their next four possessions resulted in a turnover and three missed shots while two baskets by Jizzle James got Cincinnati within 52-49.

Kansas State finally scored again when Brendan Hausen made two free throws for a 54-49 lead with 22 seconds left. Cincinnati missed a 3-pointer, N'Guessan missed the front end of the bonus, and Cincinnati missed another 3-pointer as time ran out.

Cincinnati led by seven with 14 1/2 minutes left in the second half before Kansas State’s 8-0 run gave the Wildcats a 36-35 lead with 12 minutes remaining, their first lead since 4-2.

Day Day Thomas had 12 points and James 10 for Cincinnati (17-13, 7-12).

Kansas State has won back-to-back games for the first time since Feb. 8 and 11.

With one game left in the regular season, Kansas State is tied with West Virginia and TCU for eighth place. Cincinnati and UCF are tied for 12th.

🏀 N'Guessan, McDaniel power Kansas State to win over Cincinnati

The Hutchinson Community College softball team has announced that the Blue Dragons and the Butler Grizzlies will swap home dates.

Originally, the Blue Dragons were to have traveled to El Dorado to take on the Grizzlies on Wednesday. The inclement weather conditions in Kansas over the past few days forced the change to be made.

Now the Blue Dragons and Grizzlies play their first KJCCC doubleheader on Thursday at Fun Valley with games at 2 and 4 p.m.

Dodge City holds a one-game lead over Hutchinson in the Jayhawk Conference standings. A Hutchinson victory means the Blue Dragons and Conquistadors share the conference title with a myriad of tie-breaking possibilities for the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Region 6 Tournament. The Conquistadors win the title outright with a win over the Dragons.
The Blue Dragons lost the first matchup with Dodge City 67-41 on January 18 in Dodge City. The Dragons were limited to a season-low 22.6 percent shooting with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/jackson_hailey_q6t6">Hailey Jackson</a>&nbsp;leading the way with 17 points. Shorna Preston had 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead Dodge City.
Jackson comes off a career-high 33-point performance in the Blue Dragons 58-50 win at Seward County on Saturday in Liberal. With her 16th point of the game, Jackson became the seventh Blue Dragon player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
Jackson is seventh on the career scoring list with 1,018 points. She is four points away from joining the Blue Dragon single-season Top 10 list, now with 540 points this season.
Dodge City enters the game on a five-game winning streak by an average winning margin of 37.4 points. The Conquistadors defeated Coffeyville 74-50 on Saturday.

Hutchinson's 57-54 win on Saturday at Seward County, combined with Cloud County's upset win over Butler, helped the Blue Dragons secure one of the four opening-round byes for the upcoming Region VI Tournament. The Blue Dragons will play on Tuesday, March 11 in the second round of the Region 6 Tournament.
The Blue Dragons have been exceptional defensively in their three-game win streak. The Dragons are allowing only 58.6 points per game and opposing teams are shooting only 37.6 percent.
Over his last two games, freshman Bo Aldridge has averaged 23.0 points and 8.5 rebounds to lead Hutchinson in scoring.
Dodge City, winners of three-straight games and 7 of the last 10, is tied for eighth place in the KJCCC with a shot at being a host team in the first round that begins on Saturday.
The Blue Dragons steamrolled nationally ranked Coffeyville 92-77 on Saturday at Dodge City. The Conquistadors had five players in double figures led by Mynor Strong's 23 points against the Red Ravens.

The Kansas City Chiefs are trading two-time All-Pro guard Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears for a 2026 fourth-round pick, according to ESPN's Ian Rapoport.

Thuney was selected as a first-team All-Pro for the second straight year, while also being selected to his third straight Pro Bowl.

The 32-year-old is due $16 million this season, the last year of a five-year, $80 million contract he signed with the Chiefs as a free agent in 2021.

Four Hutchinson Community College pitchers combined to toss a pair of shutouts as the No. 21-ranked Blue Dragons swept a doubleheader from the Hesston Larks on Tuesday at Hobart-Detter Field. The Blue Dragons completed a four-game season sweep of the Larks, winning 11-0 and 10-0, both games went five innings.
Hutchinson is now 13-2 entering the 2025 Jayhawk West opener on Thursday at Dodge City. Hesston fell to 2-12.

⚾ No. 21 Blue Dragons toss pair of shutouts at Larks

Hutchinson Community College freshman catcher/designated hitter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/mazza_antony_9347">Anthony Mazza</a>&nbsp;continued his torrid start to the season and was named the Jayhawk West Division I Baseball Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Mazza, a freshman from Prairie Village, Kansas, recorded hits in all eight games Hutchinson played last week in going 6-2.

For the week, Mazza hit .567 (17 for 30) with five doubles, a home run, seven RBIs, and 13 runs scored. He now has a 13-game hitting streak to start the season.

Mazza had six multi-hit games, including a trio of three-hit games against Highland and Coffeyville (twice).

Mazza hit a walk-off extra-inning home run in the Blue Dragons' 4-3 win over Des Moines Area last Monday and was three-for-three with four RBIs in a 15-5 win over Coffeyville. Mazza is third in the nation in hitting with a .609 batting average.

🎳 28 area bowlers gear up for state competition

WICHITA, Kan. — Sterling College dominated overtime to secure the KCAC women's basketball tournament championship, defeating Friends University 86-76 on Tuesday night at the Garvey Center.

The title marks Sterling’s first since the 2021-22 season, when the Warriors, then the No. 1 seed, defeated Avila for the tournament crown. This year, Sterling (21-10) earned an at-large bid to the NAIA Women’s Basketball National Championship after knocking off its third straight higher-seeded opponent in the KCAC tournament.

Sterling entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed, Friends was No. 5

The back-and-forth battle saw Sterling hold a slim 17-16 lead after the first quarter before trailing 36-35 at halftime. The Warriors reclaimed momentum in the third, outscoring Friends 20-16 to take a 55-52 lead into the final period.

With the game tied at 76, Friends (19-12) turned the ball over with 25 seconds left in regulation, giving Sterling a chance to win in the final moments. Alex Bearup’s three-point attempt missed, sending the game into overtime.

Sterling took full control in the extra period, scoring the first eight points while holding Friends scoreless for the entire five minutes to seal the victory. Korynn Clason led the Warriors with 17 points, while Kali Barr and Alissa Heskamp each added 16.

Despite being outshot (39.7% to 43.2%) and outrebounded 48-43, Sterling capitalized on 21 Friends turnovers, scoring 29 points off those miscues. The Warriors also shot 52.9% from three-point range and hit 79.2% of their free throws to maintain an edge.

Friends dominated the paint, outscoring Sterling 52-22, but struggled from beyond the arc (4 of 18, 22.2%) and at the free-throw line (8 of 14, 57.1%). Sterling’s depth proved key, with the Warriors’ bench contributing 22 points compared to just six from Friends.

The NAIA Women's Basketball Championship selection show will be Thursday at 6 p.m.

🏀 Hutch Post area sub-state scoreboard for March 4

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Hutchinson High got off to a dominant start and never looked back, defeating Andover Central 60-37 in the first round of the Class 5A sub-state tournament Friday night at the Salthawk Activity Center.

With the win, Hutchinson (15-6) advances to face the winner of Hays High and Great Bend, a game that was postponed to Thursday, March 6, due to a winter weather advisory. The Salthawks will travel to the winner’s home court for the sub-state final on Friday night.

Hutchinson set the tone early, shooting 7 of 10 from the field in the first quarter to take a commanding 17-3 lead. Andover Central responded by outscoring the Salthawks 15-12 in the second quarter, but Hutchinson still held a comfortable 29-18 advantage at halftime.

The Salthawks continued to extend their lead in the third quarter, heading into the final period up by 18. Forced to foul late, Andover Central could not mount a comeback as Hutchinson capitalized at the free-throw line to seal the victory.

Grace Posh led the Salthawks with a game-high 20 points, while Kaia Smith added 18. Sophomore Tenley Keeton contributed nine points, and Kohbie Craft chipped in seven.

Andover Central (13-8) was led by sophomore Payton Converse, who finished with 15 points.

Senior guard&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/serena-sundell/11858" rel="smarttag" rev="11858">Serena Sundell</a></dfn>&nbsp;was named to the All-Big 12 First Team, while senior center&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/ayoka-lee/11852" rel="smarttag" rev="11852">Ayoka Lee</a></dfn>&nbsp;earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors and senior forward&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/temira-poindexter/11861" rel="smarttag" rev="11861">Temira Poindexter</a></dfn>&nbsp;was named to the All-Big 12 Third Team. This is the 10th straight season K-State has had two or more players earn All-Big 12 honors. Lee was named to an All-Big 12 team for the fifth time in her career. Sundell collected her second straight All-Big 12 First Team honor and her fourth straight All-Big 12 citation as she was an honorable mention recipient in her first two seasons. Poindexter, Glenn and Walker garnered their first All-Big 12 honors. This season, Sundell leads the nation with a career-high for total assists (220), is second in the nation and paces the Big 12 with a career-high for assists per game (7.10 apg) and third in the Big 12 for assist-turnover ratio (2.37). She owns a league-best eight games with 10 or more assists. In league-only games, Sundell led the Big 12 with 132 assists and a 7.33 assists per game average. In combination with her scoring, Sundell was responsible for 44.4 percent of K-State's made field goals in Big 12 action, the top mark in league action this season. The product of Maryville, Missouri, is second on the team in scoring average with 13.5 points per game and leads the Wildcats with 418 points, which is the second-highest total of her career on a .488 field goal percentage. Her 157 made field goals this season tie her career-high from her previous two seasons. She has registered a career-high 28 blocked shots (0.90 bpg) and has pulled in 142 rebounds (4.6 rpg), which is the second-highest rebound total in her career. Sundell is the only player in the nation to register 400 or more points, 200 or more assists, 125 or more rebounds and 25 or more blocks. She has registered a career-high seven double-doubles this season. She was the first Big 12 player since the 2022-23 season and the fifth player in program history to register a triple-double with 26 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds against USC Upstate on Dec. 5, 2024. With her point (418) and assist (220) totals this season, Sundell is the first player in Big 12 history to record four seasons with 350 or more points and 150 or more assists. In her career, Sundell holds the school record for career starts (134) and is tied for third at K-State for career games played (134). She is second in school history and seventh in Big 12 history for career assists with 769 and is second in program history for career assists per game (5.74 apg). She ranks eighth on the K-State career scoring list with 1,681 points. She ranks eighth in school history for career blocks (101).&nbsp; She is the only player in school history with 1,500 or more career points, 700 or more career assists and 100 or more career blocked shots. Lee adds Tuesday's recognition to her preseason Associated Press All-America honorable mention selection, preseason All-America Second Team honors from The Athletic, selection to the Jersey Mike's Naismith Women's Player of the Year Watch List Midseason Team, named to the 2025 Naismith Women's Defensive Player of the Year Watch List presented by MOLECULE, selection to the Lisa Leslie Award top-10 and being named the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year by the league's coaches and her unanimous selection to the preseason All-Big 12 team.&nbsp; This season, Lee is averaging a team-high 15.5 points on a career-high .656 field goal percentage. She is also averaging team-highs with 6.1 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game. In her career, Lee holds the school record and ranks sixth in Big 12 history for points scored with 2,488 and holds the school record for career scoring average at 18.8. She also owns the school records for career rebounds and ranks fifth in Big 12 history with 1,233 and career rebounding average at 9.3.&nbsp; Lee is also the school record holder and ranks fourth in Big 12 history for career blocks with 351 and owns the school record and ranks tied for third in Big 12 history for career double-doubles with 63. She is the first player in program history with 300 or more career blocks and 100 or more career steals. In her first season in Manhattan, Poindexter has registered 12.7 points per game on a career-high .467 field goal percentage. The product of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, owns a career-high .403 three-point field goal percentage and has made the second-most 3-pointers in her career (77-of-191). She has also notched a career-high 39 steals this season. In league play, Poindexter ranked third in the Big 12 in 3-point field goals made per game (2.89), fourth in the league in 3-point percentage, eighth in field goal percentage (.474) and 20th in points per game (13.8). She scored in double figures in 13 games in league action. Glenn has tallied her second career season with 300 or more points and has dished out a career-high 93 assists this season. She is averaging 9.7 points on a career-best field goal percentage (.487) and 3.0 assists per game. Glenn leads the league and ranks ninth in the nation in assist to turnover ratio (2.91). She is 14th in the Big 12 in 3-point field goals made per game (2.00) and is 14th in steals per game (1.71). Her 258 steals are the most by a Wildcat in the Big 12 era (1996-present). Walker is the fourth Wildcat in program history to earn All-Big 12 Defensive Team honors. This season, Walker owns career-highs of 56 steals, 18 blocks and 3.9 rebounds per game. The product of Wichita, Kansas, ranks 11th in the Big 12 for steals per game (1.81). She has tallied 15 games with two or more steals including three games with five or more. LAWRENCE, Kan. &ndash;&nbsp;For the second consecutive season, Kansas sophomore guard&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/s-mya-nichols/15529" rel="smarttag" rev="15529" data-airgap-id="69">S'Mya Nichols</a></dfn>&nbsp;earned All-Big 12 First Team honors, it was announced Tuesday afternoon by the conference office.&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/elle-evans/15535" rel="smarttag" rev="15535" data-airgap-id="70">Elle Evans</a></dfn>&nbsp;(Honorable Mention) and&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/regan-williams/15538" rel="smarttag" rev="15538" data-airgap-id="71">Regan Williams</a></dfn>&nbsp;(All-Freshman Team) also earned a spot 2024-25 All-Big 12 Women's Basketball Team. &nbsp; The All-Big 12 honors were chosen by a vote of the league's head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. This marks the fourth-straight season that Kansas has had at least three players earn All-Big 12 postseason recognition. Nichols (Overland Park, Kan.) earns All-Big 12 First Team honors for the second time following a standout sophomore season. She leads the Jayhawks and ranks fifth in the league in scoring, averaging 18.9 points per game, scoring in double figures 26 times in 29 games, with 16 games of scoring 20 or more points. Nichols is the 33rd player in program history to score 1,000 career points, doing so in her 58th career game to become the second-fastest player in school history to hit reach the milestone. &nbsp; Nichols leads the Big 12 and ranks second nationally in both free throws made (216) and free throws attempted (258) and is shooting 83.7 percent from the free throw line. She has shattered the single season school record for free throws made and she enters the postseason ranked fifth in league history. Nichols has already moved into the top 10 in school history for free throws made with 382 in her career. &nbsp; With her selection, Nichols is now the fifth Jayhawk to become a two-time All-Big 12 First Team selection, joining Lynn Pride (1998, 1999, 2000), Carolyn Davis (2011, 2012), Chelsea Gardner (2014, 2015) and&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/taiyanna-jackson/1412" rel="smarttag" rev="1412" data-airgap-id="72">Taiyanna Jackson</a></dfn>&nbsp;(2023, 2024). Evans (Edwardsville, Ill.) picks up an All-Big 12 selection following her first season at Kansas. She is KU's No. 2 leading scorer, averaging 14.4 points per game for the season, a mark that's even higher at 15.1 points per game during league play. A prolific shooter, Evans has connected on 69 three-pointers to move into a tie for No. 2 in school history for a single season. She's shooting 42.1 percent from long range, which ranks fifth in school history, and 84.5 percent (60-71) from the free throw line, which ranks second. &nbsp; Evans scored a season-high 30 points at Cincinnati on Feb. 8 and matched a career-high with seven three-pointers during a 28-point effort at Colorado on Jan. 11. She reached double figures in scoring 20 times in 28 regular season games, with six games scoring 20 or more points. &nbsp; For Evans, this is her third career all-conference selection. She previously earned All-Summit League First Team (2024) and honorable mention (2023) honors while playing at North Dakota State. Williams (Kansas City, Mo.) claims her first All-Big 12 honors after making an immediate impact for the Jayhawks as a freshman. She has appeared in all 29 games, making 24 starts and ranks third on the team with an average of 8.9 points per game, while leading the Jayhawks with 5.0 rebounds per game and 53.6 percent field goal shooting. Williams has three double-doubles to her credit, and she was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week on Dec. 9 after going for 13 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Wichita State. &nbsp; Williams has reached double figures in scoring 13 times this season, most recently with a career-high 20 points at BYU on Feb. 25. She has led the team in rebounding seven times, with a career-high of 16 versus Kansas City on Dec. 11. &nbsp; Kansas has now had an All-Big 12 Freshman Team selection in back-to-back seasons after Nichols earned a spot on the team last season. Williams becomes the sixth Kansas player to earn a spot on the team, joining Nichols (2024), Ioanna Chatzileonti (2021),&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/zakiyah-franklin/1472" rel="smarttag" rev="1472" data-airgap-id="73">Zakiyah Franklin</a></dfn>&nbsp;(2020), Lauren Aldridge (2015) and Carolyn Davis (2010).</div>
