Hutchinson CC Sports Information
The Hutchinson Community College football team begins a three-week stretch of top-level competition beginning Saturday night at Gowans Stadium.
The No. 2-ranked Blue Dragons (2-0, 0-0 KJCCC) meet the Garden City Broncbusters (1-2, 1-1 KJCCC) in the 2026 Jayhawk Conference opener.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) with Sean Boston (play-by-play) and Rob Dreher (color) calling the action. The game will be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network. Both audio broadcast and stream begin at 6:30 p.m.
Beginning with the Broncbusters on Saturday, the Blue Dragons play three-straight game against opponents currently or were in the preseason NJCAA rankings.
Garden City started the season ranked No. 9 in the preseason poll, but is currently unranked. After the Busters, the Dragons travel to play No. 12 Butler on September 19 and then will play host to No. 1 Iowa Western on September 26 at Gowans Stadium.
Hutchinson comes off its only bye week of the season last week, meaning the Blue Dragons will play nine straight weeks starting on Saturday night to close the regular season.
The Blue Dragons last played on August 29 when they cruised to a 76-3 victory at Ellsworth Community College.
Quarterback Randy Phillips threw for a career-high four touchdown passes, three to Bobby Shaw III. The Dragons out-gained the Panthers 339-93. The Blue Dragon defense had 20 tackles for loss, including a season-high nine quarterback sacks.
Through two games, the Blue Dragon defense has been especially stingy allowing only 5.0 points per game. Opponents have entered the Red Zone only once in 36 offensive drives this season.
Garden City has a new coaching staff this season, but Blue Dragon fans are familiar with the new Buster head coach. Garden City hired former Blue Dragon Offensive Coordinator Tony Koehling to become the 25th Buster head football coach. He spent three seasons as the Blue Dragon offensive coordinator from 2023 to 2025, winning a national championship with the Blue Dragons in 2024.
The Broncbusters last week fell behind Dodge City 26-0 at halftime and nearly complete a huge comeback, falling short 26-21. The Busters opened the season with a road 31-17 loss at Snow College. Their lone victory this season was a 32-28 triumph over Independence.
Hutchinson has won seven-straight games over Garden City in a series that plays its 86th all-time game. The Blue Dragons are 45-40 all-time against the Broncbusters.
This is the first time that Hutchinson opens a conference season with Garden City since the 1995 season.
