The latest edition of the Hutchinson-Butler women's soccer rivalry turned out to be a typical Blue Dragon-Grizzly matchup – an intense one-goal game.
No. 4-ranked Butler made a first-half goal stand up to defeat the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team 1-0 on Wednesday night at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.
The Blue Dragons are now 2-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the KJCCC. Hutchinson travels to No. 7 Cowley at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Arkansas City. Butler is now 5-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the Jayhawk.
Hutchinson and Butler played its 15th one-goal game in 35 all-time meetings going back to 2005.
The Dragons played their strongest defensive game of the season on Wednesday. The Blue Dragons held high-scoring Butler to nine shots on goal.
The only Butler goal of the game came in the 12th minute when Milan Hunter scored for a 1-0 Butler lead.
Blue Dragon freshman goalkeeper Hanna Helshani made a season-high seven saves, including three on point-blank Grizzly shots that kept the deficit at one goal.
Hutchinson's back line of Lucy Bacon, Annabel Goodman, Harper Wintz and Laerke Moller-Jensen, along with the Dragon midfielders did a great job keeping the Grizzly forwards from finding open space.
Offensively, the Blue Dragons were limited to 11 total shots and three shots on goal from Poppy Smith, Montunray Ojobare and Zemyna Lekaviciute.
Lekaviciute had another great scoring chance in the first half when she raced toward a loose ball in the Butler penalty box, but Grizzly keeper Estelle Olive and the Blue Dragon sophomore got to the ball simultaneously and Lekaviciute couldn't get the shot off.
Also in the first half, sophomore forward isabell Van Fleet glanced a shot off the right post.
Overall, the Blue Dragons were outshot 24-11.
