CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Kaden Feagin scored on a 1-yard run with 9:34 to go, David Alano added a 43-yard field goal with 58 seconds left and Illinois rallied to beat No. 19 Kansas 23-17 on Saturday night.

Illinois (2-0) beat a ranked nonconference opponent for the first time since topping then-No. 22 Arizona State on Sept. 17, 2011. The Illini also avenged a 34-23 loss last year at Kansas (1-1).

Feagin scored after Luke Altmyer found Pat Bryant for 37- and 28-yard completions on the eight-play, 80-yard drive.

Altmyer completed 16 of 25 passes for 192 yards. Zakhari Franklin had nine catches for 99 yards, and Bryant had three receptions for 70 yards.

Kansas' Jalon Daniels was 18 of 32 for 141 yards with two touchdown passes and three interceptions.

Daniels scrambled and found a wide-open Lawrence Arnold in the end zone for 13-yard TD pass that give the Jayhawks a 17-13 lead with 4:57 to go in the third quarter.

Luke Grimm caught nine passes for 40 yards and a touchdown for the Jayhawks. Devin Neal ran for 101 yards on 14 carries.

The teams combined for 17 points in the final 3:05 of the second quarter.

Illinois led 13-10 at halftime thanks to Xavier Scott’s 28-yard return of an interception with 36 seconds left in the quarter. Scott read a screen pass attempt by Daniels and raced untouched into the end zone. It was Scott’s second interception of the game.

A 50-yard field goal by Alano with 2:27 to go in the quarter was set up by a spectacular one-handed, 42-yard catch by Franklin along the sideline with Kansas’ Damarius McGhee holding his other arm.

The Jayhawks went ahead 10-3 on a 3-yard TD pass from Daniels to Grimm in the back of the end zone with 3:05 remaining in the half.

Illinois: The Illini proved they could go toe-to-toe and beat a ranked opponent, a good sign with games against No. 8 Penn State, No. 10 Michigan and No. 7 Oregon coming up in the next six weeks.

Kansas: Despite the loss, the Jayhawks showed they have a potent running attack led by Neal and and a sturdy defense. Illinois’ offense scored only one touchdown — albeit the winning TD — gained just 79 yards on the ground, and had only 14 first downs.

Kansas made some major errors including a penalty that wiped out a touchdown, and the interceptions by Daniels that ruined drives and allowed Illinois to pull ahead late in the first half. The Jayhawks will most likely drop out of the Top 25.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — No. 2 Hutchinson at No. 1 Iowa Western came down to the final play.

The back-to-back national champion Reivers (1-1) scored with three seconds left and sent kicker Max Bartachek out to tie the game with an extra-point.

Before Bartachek could completely set up for the kick, Iowa Western head coach Scott Strohmeier took a timeout.

At that point, Blue Dragon head coach Drew Dallas knew the Reivers were going for the win.

"Get your defense ready and talk it through," Dallas said when asked about his thought process in the moment.

The Reivers returned to the field and Hutchinson (2-0) took a timeout before the snap.

After a minute's-worth of timeouts, the game was on-the-line.

Just last week, the No. 1 Reivers were in the opposite situation. Against Georgia Military in overtime, the Iowa Western defense used a two-point conversion stop to hold on 42-41.

Down 38-37 with three seconds left Saturday, it was the Reivers in need of the conversion.

Hunter Dekkers, the transfer quarterback from Iowa State, looked left and had two receivers. He chose Titus Myers, who was bottled up by three Blue Dragon defenders.

Hutchinson recovered the onside attempt as time expired.

FINAL: Hutchinson 38 Iowa Western 37

Dekkers finished the day 29-of-47 throwing with five touchdowns for 425 yards.

Myers caught nine of those passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns.

Hutchinson jumped out to a 21-7 lead to start the day behind two Samari Collier rushing touchdowns. The sophomore quarterback ran for two touchdowns in the first quarter.

His first touchdown, a 28-yard scamper, capped a six-play, 40-yard drive.

His two-yard run with 5:15 left in the first quarter finished another six-play drive that covered 78 yards.

Collier's 32-yard touchdown pass with 2:46 in the first frame to Tate Hoover (his first catch as a Dragon) put Hutchinson up 21-7.

Reiver running back Jonathan Humpal got some redemption on a 22-yard TD reception. Humpal started the day with a fumble that Hutchinson turned into the first points of the day.

Humpal was coming off a 106-yard rushing performance against Georgia Military and needed just 86 yards to hit the 1,000-yard mark in his Iowa Western career. The Dragons held Humpal to 65 yards.

Collier left the game with an injury and the Dragons turned to redshirt freshman Christian Johnson. Johnson had a passing and rushing touchdown in Hutchinson's season-opener against New Mexico Military.

Johnson was 4-of-5 for 45 yards passing and ran for 28 yards, including the game-deciding touchdown.

With 4:22 remaining, Collier hobbled back on the field with Johnson still in the game. As Collier took the snap and handed off to Johnson — who was looking to throw — Iowa Western took a timeout.

Johnson returned from the timeout as Collier stayed on the sideline.

"Our depth was tested today," Dallas said. "Samari was battling cramps but was super-efficient."

Collier finished 8-of-11 for 152 yards through the air and had 82 yards rushing for two more scores.

"(Johnson) gives you the ultimate security blanket," Dallas said of his backup quarterback. "Christian picked up where (Samari) left off."

Johnson faced third-and-goal from the 2 and punched it in for the score.

It was the only third down Hutchinson converted all day (1 for 8).

Johnson entered late in the second quarter the first time Collier was helped off the field. Facing second down and goal-to-go, the Blue Dragons were pushed back on consecutive plays. Hutchinson settled for a 25-yard Nestus Burger field goal.

The Reivers converted 6-of-9 attempts on third down in the first half. The Dragon defense held the Reivers to 1-of-5 in the second half.

"We settled down, especially on the defensive side," Dallas said of the difference in third-down stops.

Hutchinson returns home next Saturday to face Iowa Central (1-1). The No. 8 Tritons lost to No. 13 Highland 14-13.

Kickoff is set for noon in Gowans Stadium on Sept. 14.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Kansas State safety Jack Fabris returned Tulane quarterback Darian Mensah's fumble 60 yards for a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, and VJ Payne's interception in the end zone helped the 17th-ranked Wildcats hold on for a 34-27 victory over Tulane on Saturday.

Tulane appeared to have scored a potential tying touchdown with 17 seconds left when Mensah hit Yulkeith Brown near the left pylon, but receiver Dontae Fleming was flagged for offensive pass interference.

Payne's interception came two plays later.

Avery Johnson passed for two touchdowns for Kansas State (2-0). DJ Giddens rushed for 114 yards, his sixth straight game hitting the 100-yard mark, and had 63 yards receiving, including a 45-yard touchdown catch on fourth down in the third quarter.

Tulane (1-1) led much of the game and was threating to break a 27-all tie when Mensah was sacked and stripped by linebacker Austin Romaine. Fabris scooped and scored to put K-State in front for good with 8:13 left.

Mensah, a first-time starter this season, finished 19 of 29 for 342 yards and two touchdowns to tight end Alex Bauman, only to be done in by his crucial turnovers.

Southern California transfer Mario Williams caught six passes for 128 yards for Tulane and Makhi Hughes rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown.

Williams's catches included a 47-yard gain down the middle of the field on third and 21, setting up Mensah's fade to Bauman to put Tulane up 27-20.

Dylan Edwards tied it with a 13-yard TD run, caping a 75-yard drive on which Johnson completed passes of 33 and 11 yards.

Only twice in the 10-game series between the Blue Dragons and Reivers have both teams not been ranked (2015, 2017). This match-up will be the fourth-consecutive game where Hutchinson and Iowa Western meet with both teams ranked in the Top 3 of the NJCAA national rankings and it&apos;s the fifth meeting overall in a matchup of Top 5 opponents, the fourth consecutive time for that occurrence.

Hutchinson&apos;s defense held New Mexico Military, one of the top passing teams in the NJCAA in 2023 to just 165 yards through the air with one interception.
Iowa Western needed overtime on the road to defeat Georgia Military in its season opener last Saturday. The Reivers won 42-41 and had to made an overtime stop on a two-point conversion to secure the victory. The Reivers rolled up 539 yards total offense as quarterback Hunter Dekkers threw for 396 yards and a touchdown. Iowa Western rushed for four touchdowns against Georgia Military.
The Blue Dragons are 39-4 under fifth-year head coach Drew Dallas. The Dragons are 17-3 under Dallas in nationally ranked matchups and 13-3 in battles of Top 10 programs.
Saturday is the first in what could be three games of Hutchinson&apos;s next four in which opponents could be ranked. FRISCO, Texas—The Wichita Wind Surge fell 2-1 to the Frisco RoughRiders at Riders Field. Wichita scored first in the third and, despite stellar pitching, could not deliver a tying man to the plate in their final three innings worth of tries.

Jorel Ortega&nbsp;jumped on the first pitch of the top of the third and legged a leadoff triple into the right field corner.&nbsp;Kala’i Rosario&nbsp;later brought in Ortega on a bounding ball single to left for a 1-0 Wind Surge lead.

Theo Hardy pulled his first Double-A hit out to right in the home half of the fifth and hustled his way into second base with a face-first slide for a two-out hustle double. Alejandro Osuna lined a knock into center to score Hardy and tie the game for Frisco after the RoughRiders lineup turned over.

Marco Raya&nbsp;threw five innings for the third time in his last five starts, retiring eight straight Frisco hitters at one point. He’s allowed just two earned runs through his last 10 innings of work.

The go-ahead RoughRiders came in on an unassisted groundout to&nbsp;Alex Isola&nbsp;at first in the bottom of the sixth. Only two men reached base on free passes over the rest of the night for Wichita, as they dropped their third of four this week in Frisco by a one-run margin.

The teams and NASCAR are bitterly locked in a years-long feud on an extension of the franchise system at the heart of the business. The teams want a bigger share of the revenue pie, a seat at the negotiating table and for charters — they guarantee a spot in any Cup Series race and thus part of the purse — to become permanent. Every single proposal made to the teams has been deemed unacceptable. The charters expire at the end of the year.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Andover Central's combination of Jace Jefferson and Jace Adler was too much for Hutch High on&nbsp; Friday night at Gowans Stadium. The Jaguars picked up the 37-7 win over the Salthawks in the season opener.

The Jaguars took the opening kick off and marched down the field on a 14-play, 80-yard drive as Jefferson connected with Adler for a 22-yard touchdown with 6:37 left in the first quarter.&nbsp;

After the opening Salthawk drive stalled, Andover Central took advantage of a Salthawk penalty to keep the Jaguars' second possession alive. Jefferson found Adler for another 22-yard touchdown pass to cap a 47-yard drive with 39 seconds left in the opening quarter.

Andover Central scored again in the second quarter to take a 21-0 lead at the half.

The third quarter was more of the same with Andover Central scoring on a 69-yard pass to Adler as well as two Maddox Archibald runs of 43 yards and three yards.

The Salthawks did get on the board with a Levi Kepler to Taishaun Williams 28-yard strike with 5:10 to go in quarter three.

The Jaguars topped off the night with a 24-yard field goal by Andrew Clouse with just under three minutes remaining in the contest to make the final score 37-7.

One bright spot for the Salthawks was the running of senior Kade Smith who bowled through the Jaguar defense for 100 yards on 20 carries.

Jefferson was 15 of 21 for 215 yards and three passing touchdowns. Adler hauled in eight catches for 171 yards.&nbsp;

Kepler was 5 of 14 for 100 yards for the Salthawks. Sophomore Brodie McCuan led the Salthawk defense with eight tackles while senior Carter Morgan shined with seven tackles.

Andover Central will take on Newton next Friday while Hutchinson will host Valley Center. Both Newton and Valley Center are 0-1.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cole Ragans scattered four hits in six scoreless innings as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Minnesota Twins 5-0 on Friday night and traded places with the Twins in the AL Central and wild card standings.

The Royals now hold a half-game lead for second place in the division and the second wild card spot.

“His velocity was good, his carry was good, the curveball was really good,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said of Ragans. “Overall, how can you argue with those results?”

Michael Massey had three hits,&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Royals/status/1832225056514080933">including a home run</a>, for the Royals.

“I was trying to get a good pitch to hit,” Massey said. “It's been a minute since I hit one, but I put a good swing on it.”

Ragans (11-9) won for the first time since a 4-1 victory in Minneapolis on August 14, the Royals' lone win in Minnesota this season.

“Overall, I thought me and Sal (Perez) had a good plan,” he said. “We mixed it well. In the beginning, we got ahead pretty good. Towards the back end I had to battle a little bit. The defense was good, and the guys kept chipping away and adding runs throughout the game. It was a good team win.”

Zebby Matthews (1-3) took the loss. He allowed four runs on nine hits in five innings.

“I thought Zebby threw the ball pretty decently today,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “There were a couple of pitches, a couple of at-bats, where he didn’t do what he wanted and they capitalized.”

Ragans picked up his third strikeout of the game — and 200th of the season — to end the third inning, making him the fifth pitcher in Royals history to post 200 strikeouts in a season. He is the first Royals pitcher since Zack Greinke in 2009 to accomplish the feat.

“Obviously that's not what I play for; I play to win,” a usually low-key Ragans said with a smile. “But I thought it was cool to reach a milestone like that.”

For Quatraro, it means more than just a number.

“It's surprising to me there have only been four previously, but that is a big number," he said. "It speaks to a lot of things. It's taking the ball every fifth day. Your stuff has to be good. You have to throw strikes. You have to be competitive. And you have to have that mentality to go out and challenge people in the zone and he does that. He's leading the way with the staff.”

The Royals plated a run in the third. Kyle Isbel drew a one-out walk and scored from first when Tommy Pham yanked the ball into the left field corner. The Twins answered with an almost identical play in the top of the fourth. Austin Martin ripped a two-out double to the wall in left, but Pham threw a relay to Bobby Witt Jr., who fired a strike to Perez to retire Kyle Farmer at the plate.

“It was a great throw from Tommy and a great throw from Bobby. And a great tag. That last 90 feet is a long way," Quatraro said.

Massey extended the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a 408-foot solo home run into the bullpen in right.

The Royals used their speed to add on in the fifth. Witt avoided a double play on a comebacker to Matthews and went to third on a single by MJ Melendez. Melendez stole second and both runners scored on a single by Hunter Renfroe.

Yuli Gurriel's sacrifice fly in the eighth scored the final run.

Royals: Renfroe was returned from the 10-day Injured List on Thursday's off day. In corresponding moves, RHP Steven Cruz was optioned to Triple-A Omaha and RHP Dan Altavilla was returned from the IL and designated for assignment.

The Twins and Royals will play the second game of their three-game series. The Twins will start RHP Bailey Ober (12-6, 3.95 ERA) against Royals RHP Alec Marsh (7-8, 4.70 ERA).

ODESSA, Texas – After dropping two straight matches to open the OC Invitational, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team got back to a balanced offensive attack to sweep Vernon College in the third of four matches at the OC Sports Center.

The Blue Dragons opened the day falling to No. 14 New Mexico Junior College 20-25, 13-25, 21-25. The Dragons climbed back to the .500 mark for the season later on Friday with a 25-10, 25-22, 25-22 victory over Vernon.

Hutchinson (7-7) will play Panola College at 8 a.m. on Saturday to close out the OC Invitational.

🏈 Week 1 area high school schedule

ODESSA, Texas – Playing its second nationally ranked opponent early this season, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team was swept by No. 15 Odessa at the OC Invitational at the OC Sports Center on Thursday night.

One week after bouncing then-No. 9 Indian Hills in the McCook Invitational, the Blue Dragons got off to a slow start and fell to the Wranglers 25-12, 25-17, 27-25 in the first of four matches this weekend.

The Blue Dragons (6-5) will play No. 14 New Mexico Junior College at Noon and Vernon College at 5 p.m. on Friday in Matches 2 and 3 of the OC Invitational.

Sophomore Tiana Simmons, one night after her huge night against Seward County, had a team-high nine kills against Odessa. Simmons added two block assists.

Freshman outside hitter Viktoria Graf had eight kills and Atlyn Proctor was next with five kills.

Sophomore setter Shelbi Wilson guided the Blue Dragon offense with 23 assists.

Freshman libero Addy Foster reached double figures in digs for the 10th time in 11 matched with 11 digs. Freshmen Brooke Galey and Siani Sanchez had six digs each.

Graf had the only service ace for the Dragons against Odessa.
