WICHITA, Kan. — Hutchinson High’s Mitchell Rice earned a runner-up finish at the Class 5A regional boys golf tournament Tuesday at Auburn Hills Golf Course, carding an 8-over-par 80 to advance to the state tournament.
Rice finished five strokes behind Maize South’s Laken Matthews, who claimed medalist honors with a 75.
Hutchinson’s Alex Haas also qualified for state, placing 14th with a 90 as one of the top five individual finishers not on a top-three team.
Maize South, the regional host, dominated the team standings with a 320 to win by 55 strokes. Great Bend finished second at 375, followed by Salina South at 377. Hutchinson and Hays tied for fourth at 378.
Landyn Powell finished in a tie for 17th for the Salthawks, narrowly missing the individual cut.
