On Monday, a woman in Texas accused Watson of sexual assault in 2020 while he played for Houston. League spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league is reviewing the complaint. In the lawsuit, the woman alleges Watson forced himself on her sexually during an incident at her apartment. Watson was suspended 11 games by the league in 2022 after more than two dozen women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage therapy sessions. The Browns traded five draft picks for the three-time Pro Bowler in 2022.

Mauricio Pochettino hired to succeed Gregg Berhalter as US men's national team coach

Former Tottenham and Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has been hired to succeed Gregg Berhalter as U.S. men's national team coach, 21 months before the Americans host the 2026 World Cup. A 52-year-old Argentine, Pochettino became the 10th U.S. coach in 14 years and its first foreign-born leader since Jurgen Klinsmann from 2011-16. Pochettino has coached Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, winning a 2022 Ligue 1 title. Pochettino had been in negotiations since mid-August. Matt Crocker, the USSF's sporting director in charge of the search, was Southampton's academy director when Pochettino started at that club.

NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA has expanded the permissible scope of coach's challenge reviews on some out-of-bounds plays, saying Tuesday that if a foul should have been called on the play it now can be assessed shortly after the fact. The league's Board of Governors approved the move at its meeting in New York, after it was unanimously recommended by the league's competition committee last week. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was scheduled to speak about the meeting later Tuesday. The change will take effect this season.

Phils' Schwarber sets MLB mark with 14th leadoff HR of the season before leaving with elbow injury

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber set the MLB single-season record with his 14th leadoff home run Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Rays before being removed from the game in the fourth inning due to a hyperextended left elbow. Schwarber sent a 1-0 fastball from Rays starter Taj Bradley 437 feet to center field, moving ahead of Alfonso Soriano, who had 13 leadoff homers in 2003 with the New York Yankees. Judge orders former NFL star Adrian Peterson to turn over assets to pay $12M debt

HOUSTON (AP) — Former NFL running back Adrian Peterson has been ordered by a Texas judge to turn over personal assets to help pay a debt that has ballooned to more than $12 million. A court-appointed receiver has been seeking to collect money from Peterson as part of a judgment against the four-time All-Pro running back over a loan he failed to repay to a Pennsylvania lending company. On Monday a judge in Houston granted a request by the receiver for law enforcement to accompany him to Peterson's home in suburban Houston so he can inventory assets that can be sold off. Attorneys for Peterson did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment.

NEW YORK (AP) — Seth Lugo struck out 10 in seven masterful innings and Salvador Perez hit two run-scoring singles to reach 100 RBIs for the second time as the Kansas City Royals beat the New York Yankees 5-0 on Tuesday night.

Pitching in New York City for the first time since spending his first seven seasons across town with the Mets from 2016-22, Lugo absolutely dominated.

“I’m looking forward to going back and watching that, to be honest, because he must have been on the corners all night,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. "He got the breaking ball going to get the swing and miss. He elevated when he needed to. I mean, that was a pitching clinic.”

Tommy Pham homered and Bobby Witt Jr. had an RBI single for the Royals, who remained 3 1/2 games behind first-place Cleveland in the AL Central. They hold a 2 1/2-game edge over Minnesota for the league's second wild card.

New York's advantage in the AL East was shaved to a half-game over second-place&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/orioles-red-sox-score-fb84ce0f5563242f71bfe5e6c6dcdd73">Baltimore, which won 5-3 at Boston</a>.

“We know they’re in line to make the playoffs," Lugo said. “With the atmosphere here in New York, I think the emphasis for a lot of guys on the team is getting used to this kind of atmosphere. This is what we’re going to face.”

In a potential postseason preview, Lugo (16-8) carved up a full-strength Yankees lineup that entered leading the majors in homers and ranked second in runs.

“That was probably as good a performance (as there's been) against us this year. We were silent,” New York manager Aaron Boone said. “He's throwing the kitchen sink at you. He's changing speeds.”

The right-hander allowed only three singles and walked none, retiring 17 straight batters after Gleyber Torres' bloop hit to begin the bottom of the first.

Torres snapped the string on another soft single off Lugo with two outs in the sixth.

“I think he was mixing up pitches really well tonight. He was pounding the strike zone,” Yankees slugger Juan Soto said. “It's tough with a guy who has like nine pitches, and he was showing every pitch today. So, he was throwing everything, he was confident about it, and he just kept us off balance.”

Kris Bubic and John Schreiber each fanned two in a perfect inning to complete the three-hitter, as New York failed to advance a runner to second base. It was Kansas City's first shutout against the Yankees since May 2015 at Kauffman Stadium.

Lugo tied Atlanta ace Chris Sale and Detroit lefty Tarik Skubal for most wins in the majors.

“I was locating all of my pitches and I don’t think there was a pitch that I didn’t think I could throw where I wanted," Lugo said. “It was just one of those nights. I had everything working.”

The right-hander outpitched former Mets teammate Marcus Stroman (10-8), who permitted three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

No. 9 batter Kyle Isbel scored twice after leadoff singles for the Royals, who had dropped six consecutive road games. They won for the fifth time in 13 games overall and improved to 2-4 against the Yankees this season.

“That lineup is relentless so you don’t ever really get comfortable,” Lugo said. “I think it really comes down to the game yesterday. Tough loss and really wanted to even the series right there. So I think it was important.”

Royals: RHP Michael Lorenzen (left hamstring strain) was tagged for three runs and five hits over 1 2/3 innings during a rehab start with Double-A Northwest Arkansas. He threw 38 pitches. It's possible Lorenzen could rejoin the big league rotation next week. ... LHP Will Smith (back spasms) planned to throw another bullpen at less than full intensity. "He’s still not completely symptom-free in his back. But he’s working through the bullpens,” Quatraro said. “It’s improving, it’s just not completely resolved.”

Yankees: Boone didn't rule out a return this season for infielder DJ LeMahieu (right hip impingement), but also said he wouldn't count on it, either.

All-Star LHP Cole Ragans (11-9, 3.33 ERA) starts for Kansas City against rookie RHP Luis Gil (13-6, 3.24) in the rubber match of the three-game series Wednesday night.

The first Royals lefty with 200 strikeouts in a season, Ragans pitched six shutout innings to beat Minnesota last Friday night. Gil returned that day from a lower back strain that landed him on the injured list and threw six innings of one-hit ball in a 3-0 win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

The sophomore from Pensacola, Florida become the first Blue Dragon since linebacker K'Von Sherman last season to earn league Player of the Week awards in consecutive weeks. Jordan is the first Blue Dragon offensive player to earn awards in back-to-back weeks since Tyrell Reed Jr. last season on October 3 and 10, 2023.

Jordan had another huge game as No. 2 Hutchinson defeated No. 1 Iowa Western 38-37 on Saturday in Council Bluffs, IA. Jordan rushed for 174 yards on 24 carries and 26-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Jordan helped the Blue Dragons rush for 2:54 yards as a team against the Reivers in the No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Jordan has now had back-to-back 170-plus yards games and leads the nation in rushing with 353 yards in two games.

Hutchinson Community College freshman midfielder&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/artmann_kira_vs31">Kira Artmann</a>&nbsp;was named the KJCCC Division I Women's Soccer Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Artmann a freshman from Boblingen, Germany, had a four-point week for the No. 18 Blue Dragons (3-1-1).

Artmann tallied an assist in Hutchinson's 3-0 victory over Dodge City last Wednesday. The midfielder then scored a goal and tallied an assist in the Blue Dragons' 3-2 road loss at No. 10 Butler on Saturday.

For the season, Artmann now has two goals and three assists for seven points. She has one game-winning goal to her credit. She has scored at least one point in 4 of 5 games played this season.

Artmann is the second-straight Blue Dragon player to earn KJCCC Player of the Week honors. She joins teammate&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/rogers_haley_tzll">Haley Rogers</a>, who was the league Player of the week on September 3.

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) — Kansas City’s thrilling 27-20 victory over Baltimore on Thursday night was the most-watched NFL Kickoff game since it started in 2002.

The game had a total audience average of 28.9 million, surpassing the 27.6 million that watched the New England Patriots defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2015 opener on NBC. Streaming did not start getting added to audience figures until 2016.

It was a 5% increase from the 27.5 million that watched Detroit beat Kansas City in last year’s opener.

Despite the start of the game being delayed 20 minutes due to a storm that included lightning, NBC averaged 24.3 million, according to Nielsen, with the audience peaking at 33 million during the second quarter (9:30-9:45 p.m. EDT).

It also drew a 37 share on NBC, which is its largest for any regular-season game since it started carrying NFL prime time games in 2006. A share is the percentage of all television sets in use at a given time watching a program.

According to Adobe Analytics, streaming on Peacock, NBC and NFL digital platforms averaged 4.6 million.

Gaudreau brothers are mourned by the hockey community, family and friends as 'linemates forever'

MEDIA, Pa. (AP) — John and Matthew Gaudreau were remembered as loving brothers and husbands who put family above hockey and everything else at their tearful funeral, a week and a half after they died when they were struck by a suspected drunken driver while riding bicycles in New Jersey. Widows Meredith and Madeline Gaudreau described their husbands as attached at the hip throughout their lives. John was 31 and Matthew 29. Meredith Gaudreau revealed she was nine weeks pregnant with the couple's third child. Madeline Gaudreau also is pregnant, due to give birth to the couple's first child in December.

Angel Reese uses social media to explain wrist injury that will sideline her the rest of WNBA season

Angel Reese took to social media to explain her season-ending wrist injury. The Chicago star rookie has a small crack in a bone in her right wrist and she'll have surgery to repair it Tuesday. Reese says she'll be in a hard cast for four weeks and then a soft cast for two. Reese, the No. 7 pick in the draft, finished the season averaging 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds. It's the highest rebound average in the history of the WNBA. Reese also set the rookie record with 26 double-doubles — her last coming in a 92-78 win over Los Angeles on Friday night.

The Southeastern Conference has taken over the The Associated Press college football poll, grabbing six of the first seven spots. The now 16-team SEC set a new standard for hoarding high AP Top 25 rankings, with Georgia at No. 1, Texas at two, Alabama four, Mississippi five, Missouri at No. 6 and Tennessee seventh. Extend it out a little further and half of the top 16 comes from the SEC. How long will this last? Could be a while before those first six teams start running into challenges.

NASCAR has finalized a new charter agreement. Team co-owner Michael Jordan won't sign it

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) — NASCAR is in a stalemate with Michael Jordan and how it ends could potentially get very messy for both sides. After more than two years of contentious negotiations over a new revenue agreement, NASCAR last weekend finally got 13 organizations to sign a new deal. The agreement was reached less than 48 hours before NASCAR's playoff opener at Atlanta Motor Speedway. But this is not the win NASCAR would like to believe it is. 23XI Racing, the team co-owned by Michael Jordan, and Front Row Motorsports both refused to sign the deal.

Wells hits go-ahead three-run homer, drives in four as Yankees beat Royals 10-4

NEW YORK (AP) — Austin Wells hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh inning and added an RBI double in the eighth as the New York Yankees pulled away for a 10-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night and widened their lead in the AL East. The Yankees (83-61) surpassed last season's win total and moved 1 1/2 games ahead of the Orioles, who were handed a 12-3 loss in Boston. Aaron Judge hit a tying single off James McArthur and four pitches later, Wells lifted a 2-1 fastball into the lower rows of the right field bleachers to push New York's lead to 7-4.

National League wild card race looks like a barnburner with 3 weeks remaining in regular season

PHOENIX (AP) — The National League playoff race is getting very interesting with three weeks remaining in the regular season. The Padres, Diamondbacks, Mets and Braves are locked in a four-team scramble with only three postseason spots available. The American League race isn't quite as close, though a hot streak from a handful of teams could tighten things quickly. The Tigers, Mariners, Red Sox and Rays are all within striking distance of the Twins, who are trying to hang on to a 3 1/2 lead for the last AL wild card.

China's Football Association bans 43 people for life after corruption investigation

DALIAN, China (AP) — China's Football Association says it has banned 43 people for life over allegations of match-fixing and other forms of corruption. The official Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday that Zhang Xiaopeng, a top police official, gave out details of a "two-year investigation that uncovered a series of online gambling, match-fixing and bribery cases." Xinhua said 120 matches in domestic leagues, 128 criminal suspects, and 41 clubs were implicated in the investigation. Of those banned, 38 were players and five were club officials. Other players and officials were given shortened bans, including foreign players lured to China by the promise of high salaries.

 NEW YORK (AP) — Austin Wells hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh inning and added an RBI double in the eighth as the New York Yankees pulled away for a 10-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night and widened their lead in the AL East.

The Yankees (83-61) surpassed last season’s win total and moved 1 1/2 games ahead of the Orioles, who were handed a 12-3 loss in Boston.

Aaron Judge hit a tying single off James McArthur and four pitches later, Wells lifted a 2-1 fastball into the lower rows of the right field bleachers to push New York’s lead to 7-4.

“Got a couple of pitches in off the plate, so I was kind of looking inside there,” Wells said. “I was able to put a good swing on it.”

After homering, Wells briefly watched the flight of the ball, flipped his bat and yelled in excitement towards his teammates in the dugout.

“I was jacked,” Wells said. “I blacked out.”

The 404-foot drive was Wells’ seventh in his last 37 games since July 21 and sixth as New York’s cleanup hitter behind Judge.

The rookie catcher tied a career high and drove in four runs for the fourth time since making his debut last September. Three of those instances are since the All-Star break and Wells is batting .301 in his last 37 games.

“He’s been a middle of the order hitter for two, three months now and I think we’ve all seen that, witnessed that,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Whether you get a result or not it’s the just the level of the at-bat that he gives you from the left side is impressive and that was a no doubter tonight.”

“That homer today was insane,” added outfielder Jasson Domínguez, who was 1 for 4 after being promoted from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre.

Hunter Renfroe led off the sixth with a homer to give the Royals a 4-3 lead before the Yankees mounted a rally against McArthur (5-7) and scored the final seven runs of the game.

Gleyber Torres beat out an infield single after Bobby Witt Jr. made a diving stop at shortstop and Juan Soto drew a walk. Judge, who is homerless in 13 games, followed by singling to left to easily score Torres.

Domínguez singled, stole third base and scored New York’s first run on a throwing error by catcher Salvador Perez. Alex Verdugo hit a two-run homer to give the Yankees a brief 3-2 lead.

Verdugo hit his second homer since the All-Star break after the Yankees called up Domínguez to see regular time in left field. Domínguez started in center field and was 1 for 4 while Judge was the designated hitter.

Torres hit an RBI single in the eighth before Wells doubled off the left field wall as the Yankees scored double digit runs for the 13th time this season.

Perez homered, went 4 for 4 and drove in Kansas City its first three runs as the Royals capitalized on shaky defense to take an early lead.

He hit an RBI single off Carlos Rodón in the first after Tommy Pham started the game by reaching on a throwing error by third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., who made a low throw to first base.

Perez homered in the third for a 2-0 lead and hit a tying single in the fifth on a miscommunication between Torres and Soto on a pop-up.

The Royals (79-66) lost their sixth straight road game and dropped 3 1/2 games behind Cleveland in the AL Central.

“We felt really good about him (McArthur) there,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “It was one of those nights where he wasn’t able to put them away.”

Rodón allowed four runs (three earned) and six hits in six innings.

Jake Cousins (2-1) picked off pinch hitter Kyle Isbel in the seventh and Luke Weaver stranded two in the eighth. Ian Hamilton pitched a 1-2-3 ninth in his first appearance since June 16.

Kansas City starter Brady Singer allowed three runs and five hits in five innings.

Yankees: INF DJ LeMahieu (right hip impingement) was placed on the 10-day injured list and may miss the rest of the season. … INF Jon Berti was activated after missing 90 games with a strained left calf.

The top two teams in last week's NJCAA Division I Football rankings switched places on Monday after Saturday's scintillating contest between the two teams in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The Hutchinson Community College football team assumed the top spot in Monday's latest rankings after a 38-37 victory at Iowa Western on Saturday. The game came down to Iowa Western going for two and missing after scoring a touchdown with 3 seconds remaining in regulation. The game featured the second-most combined points scored in series history and the 982 combined total yards were the most in the 10 games played between the Blue Dragons and Reivers.

The Blue Dragons (2-0) earned their sixth all-time No. 1 ranking in program history, capturing all 12 first-place votes.

Since head coach Drew Dallas took over the program before the 2020/21 season, 56 national polls have been released. The Blue Dragons have been No. 1 in 30 of those 56 polls.

The Dragons have now been ranked in the Top 3 of the national rankings for 31 consecutive polls.

Hutchinson has now been ranked in 36 consecutive NJCAA rankings dating back to the second regular-season poll of the 2021 season. That is the third-longest consecutive run in the national poll in program history. The Blue Dragons were ranked in 45-straight polls from 2010 to 2013 and in 38 consecutive polls from 2018 to 2021.

The Top 5 saw a shakeup after the switch at Nos. 1 and 2. Snow and Kilgore flip-flopped spots at Nos. 3 and 4 and Mississippi Gulf Coast vaulted into the No. 5 spot.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas guard Shakeel Moore could miss up to eight weeks after breaking his foot in a pickup game, potentially leaving the Jayhawks without a second guard for the start of the season following Elmarko Jackson’s knee injury.

The Jayhawks, who are front-runners to be preseason No. 1 in the AP Top 25, open against Howard on Nov. 4.

Moore began his career at NC State before transferring to Mississippi State, where he averaged 7.9 points last season. KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Major League Baseball announced that&nbsp;Salvador Perez&nbsp;was named the Kansas City Royals 2024 nominee for the&nbsp;Roberto Clemente&nbsp;Award presented by Capital One, baseball’s most prestigious individual honor for Major Leaguers. This is Salvy’s third nomination in four years.

The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One is the annual recognition of a Major League player who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

As part of the annual program, each MLB Club nominates one player to be considered for the league-wide Award in tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character.&nbsp;

Salvador Perez’s status as one of the most loved and respected athletes in Kansas City history was cemented in 2023 when he was named the fourth captain in Royals history, and the second since 1993. In July, he was named to his ninth American League All-Star team, only&nbsp;George Brett&nbsp;has more in Royals history. He is the strength and soul behind one of the greatest team turnarounds in baseball history.

Around baseball and beyond, Salvy is known for his generosity and kind heart as much as his World Series MVP award and Hall of Fame credentials. Salvy is a shining example of humanitarianism, creating opportunity and better outcomes for the less fortunate in his native Venezuela and here in the United States with a focus on Healthy and Active Communities, which is one of the key initiatives of Royals Community Impact.

Back home every winter, Salvy and his family pass out bags of food and kitchen supplies to upwards of 2,000 homes in the neediest parts of his hometown of Valencia. He knocks on doors and often goes to the pharmacy for those who need medicine. Over the last decade, he has impacted over 10,000 families who have received much needed relief directly from Salvy.

Furthermore, Salvy has paid for dozens of surgeries for kids with cleft lip, annually gives more than 1,000 toys to children’s hospitals, and supports police officers with car repairs, computers, office renovations, and more.

He also regularly travels to Colombia to assist the&nbsp;Carlos Fortuna&nbsp;Foundation in helping adults there be the best parents they can be. During the COVID-19 shutdown, Colombia set strict travel guidelines. Salvy was so determined to help that he crossed the border on foot, at significant personal risk, to be there for the families who counted on him.

In the U.S., Salvy has partnered with multiple organizations fighting against ALS, most notably&nbsp;Sarah’s Soldiers, raising money and awareness to find a cure. Additionally, he works with&nbsp;Braden’s Hope&nbsp;for Childhood Cancer, who have come to count on Salvy’s generous spirit for dozens of events, often providing once-in-a-lifetime experiences for terminally ill kids.

Beyond those struggling with illness, Salvy has regularly provided support and baseball experiences for teachers and many families of fallen or wounded police officers.

Salvy owns a youth league in Venezuela, where hundreds in Valencia learn to love the game. He provides well-kept fields and professional coaches. At the beginning of each season, the kids are given bags with spikes, running shoes, jerseys, gloves, and financial support for their families. Beyond baseball, Salvy also takes time to speak to each kid about the dangers of drugs, the importance of education, and other critical lessons for successful lives.

In Kansas City, Salvy gave a $1 million foundational donation to the Kansas City Urban Youth Academy, which is one of MLB’s eight youth academies and empowers Kansas City’s urban youth through baseball and softball, as well as academic and social opportunities to become the leaders of tomorrow. Salvy’s donation matches the biggest in the UYA’s history, helping it welcome over 60,000 youth since its inception in 2018. Additionally, Salvy has represented Major League Baseball in many initiatives, including the Nike RBI Program, and regularly donates his time and memorabilia to the Dream Factory.

Earlier this summer, Salvy hosted more than 100 kids from Kansas City’s urban core for a baseball clinic and inspirational conversation about education and health. He provided funding for each kid to go home with a backpack filled with necessary school supplies for the upcoming year.

Salvador Perez is the model for a great teammate on and off the field – relentlessly making himself and those around him better. His professional career and adult life are devoted to building support and opportunities for this and future generations to live happier, healthier, and more productive lives.

NEW YORK (AP) — After the first shake-up of the college football season, the Southeastern Conference grabbed six of the top seven spots in the AP Top 25 — a first in the 88-year history of the rankings — and Notre Dame tumbled all the way to No. 18 on Sunday after being stunned at home.

Georgia received 54 out of a possible 63 first-place votes to keep a firm hold on No. 1. No. 2 Texas jumped a spot after dominating defending national champion Michigan on the road and received four first-place votes. The Longhorns have their best ranking since finishing second in 2009.

No. 3 Ohio State from the Big Ten Conference slipped a spot. Then it was four more SEC teams. Alabama held steady at No. 4 and Mississippi moved up a spot to No. 5.

Missouri moved up three spots to No. 6 and Tennessee made a big jump from No. 14 to No. 7 after routing North Carolina State in Charlotte.

With the SEC bigger (16 teams) — and seemingly better — than ever given the additions of Texas and Oklahoma — the circumstances were right for an early season takeover like never before.

Not only is six of the top seven teams from one conference a record for a poll, but never before had a single league held as many as five of the top seven places.

Those teams will start playing each other in the coming weeks so it is unlikely the SEC can keep this up, but it’s a stark example of what’s possible in the superconference era.

After starting that season ranked No. 24, the Huskers lost in Week 2, fell out the rankings and have been gone ever since.The last sustained season in the rankings for Nebraska was 2016, though even that season ended with the Huskers unranked. They have not finished a season ranked since 2012.
