WICHITA, Kan. &ndash;&nbsp;Wichita State homered three times to claim a 9-3 win in the series finale vs. North Texas Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium. Wichita State (13-13, 2-4) secured its first conference series win of the season, winning the final two games against the Mean Green. <dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/camryn-compton/9311" rel="smarttag" rev="9311" data-airgap-id="61">Camryn Compton</a></dfn>&nbsp;drove in a career-high four RBI to go with a home run and a single.&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/lauren-lucas/9314" rel="smarttag" rev="9314" data-airgap-id="62">Lauren Lucas</a></dfn>&nbsp;was 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and another three runs scored.&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/gabby-scott/9324" rel="smarttag" rev="9324" data-airgap-id="63">Gabby Scott</a></dfn>&nbsp;rounded out a solid weekend with her first career home run, a two-run shot to center. <dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/taylor-sedlacek/9318" rel="smarttag" rev="9318" data-airgap-id="64">Taylor Sedlacek</a></dfn>&nbsp;walked three times, tying a career high for the second straight game. <dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/ryley-nihart/9325" rel="smarttag" rev="9325" data-airgap-id="65">Ryley Nihart</a></dfn>&nbsp;(1-3) recorded her first collegiate win in 5.0 innings. She allowed two runs on only four hits and one walk, while striking out a pair. Wichita State opened the scoring in the bottom of the second on&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/brookelyn-livanec/9329" rel="smarttag" rev="9329" data-airgap-id="66">Brookelyn Livanec's</a></dfn>&nbsp;sac fly to left. In the third, Wichita State broke it open on Compton's three-run shot and two batters later Scott followed suit with a two-run blast to make it 6-0. After another scoreless frame for Nihart in the top of the fourth, Wichita State went up 8-0 on Lucas' two-run home run down the left field line. Heading to the top of the fifth with the run-rule in play, North Texas put its leadoff on base via walk and then Madison Conley belted a two-run homer over the wall in center to erase the shutout and run-rule. Compton got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a high, deep single to left, scoring Lucas. Wichita State stranded the bases loaded to end the sixth, sending the game to the seventh. The first pitch of the seventh was crushed to center off the bat of Riley McNemar, cutting it to 9-3, but that would do it for the Mean Green in the seventh. HAYS, Kan. — The No. 9 Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team saw its Region VI Tournament run come to an end with a 45-42 loss to No. 20 Coffeyville on Friday at Gross Memorial Coliseum in the semifinals.

The Blue Dragons fall to 28-4 on the season and now await the NJCAA selection show, on Sunday at 5 p.m. to see if they'll receive an at-large bid into the national tournament.

Hutchinson got off to another sluggish start against the Red Ravens, the same thing that doomed them in a regular season loss at Coffeyville (26-5) last month.

The Blue Dragons fell behind 15-8 after the first quarter and then down 25-14 at halftime, the lowest scoring first half by HutchCC this season.

Coffeyville grew the lead to 15 points in the third frame, as Hutchinson continued to struggle against the Red Raven defense.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons continued to battle back in the fourth quarter and pulled within three late.&nbsp;

Hutchinson had one final chance with four seconds to play trailing 45-42. Jada Pleasant inbounded from the left sideline, which deflected off of Katie Duncan's left hand, Duncan tracked down the ball and passed it back to Pleasant who missed the contested 3-pointer from the left-wing as time expired.

Duncan scored a team-high 11 points off the bench. Hailey Jackson, the Jayhawk Conference's leading scorer was held to just four points on 2-for-8 shooting.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons shot just 31% from the floor and were outrebounded by seven.&nbsp;

Coffeyville was led by Norika Welch with 13 points, while Karliey Parker added 11. The Red Ravens will meet No. 7 Dodge City on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Region VI Tournament championship game.&nbsp;

The No. 2-seed Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team makes its 22nd appearance in the Region 6 Tournament semifinals on Friday evening against the third-seeded Coffeyville Red Ravens.
Slated to be the third game of the day in the 2025 Region 6 Tournament, the NJCAA No. 9-ranked Blue Dragons (28-3) and 20th-ranked Red Ravens (25-5) are set to tip off at 5:30 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays, Kansas.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 5:15 p.m. with Sean Boston (play-by-play) and Dan Naccarato (analyst) calling the action. The game will be streamed live on the NJCAA Network at 5:25 p.m. and is a pay-per-view service.
The top four seeds in this year's tournament have advanced to the semifinal round. At 1 p.m. on Friday, top-seeded Dodge City will take on No. 4-seed Butler. The two semifinal winners will play in the Region 6 Tournament championship at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.
After receiving an opening-round bye, the Blue Dragons advanced after a tougher-than-expected quarterback battle with Colby. Trailing by three points at halftime, the Dragons finally regained their scoring touch for a 59-49 victory to extend their home-court win streak to 33 games.
Coffeyville advanced with a 61-50 home win over Seward County on Tuesday night.
Hutchinson and Coffeyville split their season series in 2024-25.
The Blue Dragons hit a season-high 15 3-pointers - going 15 of 32 from distance - in a 66-53 victory over Coffeyville on November 24 at the Sports Arena. The Red Ravens limited the Blue Dragons to 31.0 percent shooting in the rematch on February 6 at Nellis Hall in Coffeyville. The Red Ravens won that game 64-55.
Friday will be the 11th Region 6 Tournament battle between the Dragons and Ravens.</div>

🏀 Blue Dragon women face Coffeyville in Region VI semifinals

The Kansas City Royals announced Friday that Alex Gordon has been elected to the team’s Hall of Fame and will be inducted in a ceremony on June 13 before the Royals play the A’s at Kauffman Stadium.

Gordon, 41, will be the 31st inductee of the Royals Hall of Fame and will receive a blue jacket, joining his former manager Ned Yost, who was inducted in 2023.

Gordon was selected No. 2 in the 2005 MLB Draft out of Nebraska and was with the Royals organization for his entire professional career.

He was the league standard when it came to outfield defense, manning left field at Kauffman Stadium for a decade and winning two Platinum Glove awards on top of his eight Gold Gloves. He put together some good offensive years, ending his career with a .257 average with 190 home runs and 749 RBI.&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Henri Veesaar and KJ Lewis scored 19 points apiece and Arizona pulled away late to beat Kansas 88-77 in a Big 12 Conference Tournament quarterfinal at T-Mobile Center on Thursday night.

Veesaar came off the bench to sink 7 of 11 shots with two 3-pointers for the third-seeded Wildcats (21-11), who move on to play second-seeded and ninth-ranked Texas Tech in a Friday semifinal. No. 1 seed Houston plays No. 4 seed BYU in the other semifinal.

Veesaar scored 10, leading Arizona to a 45-37 advantage at halftime. Dajuan Harris Jr.'s 3-pointer gave No. 6 seed Kansas (21-12) its only lead of the half at 3-2. The Wildcats twice built 12-point leads. KJ Adams made two free throws to get the Jayhawks within 40-37, but Veesaar answered with a 3-pointer and Arizona stayed in front.

Arizona played with a lead until Zeke Mayo hit back-to-back 3-pointers for Kansas to knot the score at 50 with 15:43 remaining. Harris hit a 3-pointer to give the Jayhawks their second lead at 56-54. Rylan Griffen hit a jumper with 8:44 left to put Kansas up for the last time at 63-61. Trey Townsend followed with a dunk and a three-point play and Arizona maintained a lead over the final 7:48.

Towsend had 16 points and Love scored 11 with six assists.

Mayo scored 20 to lead Kansas. Hunter Dickinson totaled 19 points and 12 rebounds. Harris hit four 3-pointers and scored 16.

The Jayhawks wore their blue jerseys in the tournament for the first time since the 2008 title game against the Texas Longhorns. They were the higher seed and wore white in their previous 36 straight games. Kansas — the two seed in '08 — beat the top-seeded Longhorns 84-74.

🏀 Arizona pulls away late to beat KU in Big 12 quarterfinal

WASHINGTON (AP) — John Feinstein, one of the country's foremost sports writers and the author of numerous bestselling books, including the groundbreaking “A Season on the Brink” about college basketball coach&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bob-knight-death-indiana-army-college-basketball-c29a7cb601f64e9181564037e8c78758">Bob Knight</a>, died unexpectedly Thursday. Feinstein was 69.

He died of natural causes at his brother's home in McLean, Virginia, according to Robert Feinstein, who said he discovered John's body.

John Feinstein was a full-time reporter for The Washington Post from 1977 to 1991, a commentator for outlets such as ESPN and the Golf Channel and a voter for more than 20 years in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">AP Top 25</a>&nbsp;men's college basketball poll. He remained with the Post as a contributing columnist, and he also hosted satellite radio programs on SiriusXM.

“He was very passionate about things,” Robert Feinstein said in a telephone interview. “People either loved him or hated him — and equally strongly.”

He was in Washington this week to cover the Atlantic 10 Tournament, and he&nbsp;<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2025/03/13/tom-izzo-michigan-state/">filed a column for the Post</a>&nbsp;about Michigan State coach Tom Izzo that appeared online Thursday.

Feinstein was comfortable writing about an array of sports, including golf and tennis, but he was known most for his connection to college basketball because of “A Season on the Brink.” He took a leave of absence from the Post in 1985 to embed with Knight's Indiana team, and the book highlighted the author's flair for the dramatic and ability to capture his subjects' personalities.

Knight's reputation for having a hot temper was well-established by then, and Feinstein brought it to life. Feinstein also effectively portrayed the personal relationships Knight had with his players, which alternated between warm and abusive.

Feinstein went on to write more than 40 books, including “A Good Walk Spoiled” (1995), about professional golf, and “A Civil War” (1996), about the Army-Navy football game. After that book's publication, he worked for many years as a radio commentator for Navy football.

“The Ancient Eight,” about Ivy League football, was published last year. Feinstein also wrote sports novels aimed at younger readers.

In addition to Robert, John Feinstein is survived by his wife, Christine, daughters Brigid and Jayne, and son Danny, as well as a sister, Margaret.

FORT WORTH, Tex.&nbsp; – Corey Washington and Bijan Cortes both recorded 20-point performances to keep Wichita State's season alive in a 73-68 win over 9th-seeded South Florida in the second round of the American Athletic Conference Championship.

Wichita State (19-13) advances to Friday's quarterfinals where they will face top-seeded Memphis at Noon on ESPN2.

Washington scored a game-high 21 to go with nine rebounds on 8-of-16 shooting and a season-best 4-of-6 from three-point range. Cortes recorded a career-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting. He dished out seven assists and finished with zero turnovers.

Quincy Ballard was a force on the glass and the defensive end. He pulled down 12 rebounds and blocked five shots, all in the first half.

Not known for its three-point shooting, Wichita State knocked down nine three-pointers, tied for second most in a game this season.

Wichita State started the game locked in on both ends, quickly building a 12-4 lead. The Shockers forced South Florida into missing six of its first eight attempts. After a South Florida bucket cut it to 12-6, Wichita State stretched its lead to double digits for the first time following a Ballard tip-in and Beverly wing three-pointer.

South Florida came back with seven straight only to see the Shockers answer back with an 8-2 run, all from Washington and Cortes. The duo traded three-pointers and then connected on an alley-oop to make it 24-14 with 8:09 left in the half.

Following a South Florida timeout, the Bulls pulled within two on an 8-0 spurt with 4:39 left until halftime. In the span of 2:09, Wichita State had already pushed it back to a 10-point game thanks to back-to-back Washington three-pointers.

With 40 seconds left Cortes gave the Shockers their largest lead of the half, 38-26. Two South Florida free throws just before the buzzer made it 38-28 at halftime.

Wichita State kept its foot on the gas to begin the second half, extending its lead to 16, its largest of the game, just 3:13 in. Three-pointers from Washington and Ronnie DeGray III had the Shockers' offense in high gear.

The Shockers continued to hold a double-digit lead at the halfway mark until South Florida slowly started to chip away. For the first time all half the lead was down to single digits with 8:50 to go.

Then with 4:55 remaining, South Florida found itself within four, 62-58, erasing a 16-point second half deficit.

After a Cortes layup made it 64-58, the Bulls made it a one-possession game at the final media timeout.

A defensive stop, followed by a three-point play from Cortes put Wichita State up 67-61. Over the final 2:37 it would remain at least a two-possession game. Two South Florida free throws made it 71-66 with just 26 seconds to go.

🏀 KSHSAA state tournament: Day 2 schedule

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson had 23 points and 13 rebounds, Zeke Mayo poured in 24 points, and sixth-seeded Kansas rallied to force overtime before holding off No. 14 seed UCF 98-94 on Wednesday night in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament.

AJ Storr scored a season-high 19 points before fouling out in the closing seconds of OT, and KJ Adams had 15 points and seven boards for the Jayhawks (21-11), who narrowly avoided dropping their conference tourney opener for a second straight year.&nbsp;

Instead, they will face third-seeded Arizona on Thursday night in a rematch of a game Kansas won last weekend.

Jordan Ivy-Curry pulled UCF to within 94-93 when he converted a three-point play with 18.2 seconds to go, and Mayo missed the second of two foul shots at the other end. But UCF big man Moustapha Thiam came up short on a jumper with a chance to tie the game, Kansas got the rebound and Dickinson made the second of two free throws with 2.4 seconds remaining.

The Knights’ Deebo Coleman was quickly fouled. He made the first foul shot with 0.9 seconds left to make it 96-94, but when he tried to intentionally miss the second to give his team a chance, Coleman failed to hit the rim and the Jayhawks got possession.

David Coit was fouled and added two more free throws for the final margin.

Keyshawn Hall led UCF (17-16) with 25 points. Darius Johnson had 22 before fouling out with a minute to go in regulation.

The Jayhawks blew a 13-point second-half lead, then had to rally once UCF pulled ahead with 7 minutes to go. The teams traded buckets down the stretch, and Ivy-Curry’s 3-pointer tied the game 83-all with 14.1 seconds left in regulation.

Kansas tried to set up a winning play, but Adams stepped on the baseline on his drive, giving the Knights a shot. Ivy-Curry raced up the floor and got a decent look from the wing, but his 3-pointer came up well short as time expired.

UCF came a long way from January, when it lost 99-48 to the Jayhawks at home. It had won four of its past six games.

Kansas has gone with a shortened lineup late in the season and it seems to be paying off for the Jayhawks.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — VJ Edgecombe had 19 points and 10 rebounds, Norchad Omier added 12 points and 14 boards, and seventh-seeded Baylor rolled to a 70-56 victory over No. 10 seed Kansas State in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday night.

Jayden Dunn also scored 18 points for the Bears (19-13), who built a 20-point lead early in the second half and then cruised into a quarterfinal matchup with ninth-ranked and No. 2 seed Texas Tech on Thursday night.

David N’Guessan had 20 points and Dug McDaniel finished with 14 for the Wildcats (16-17), who edged Arizona State in the first round but were unable to keep the momentum going against the same team that rallied from 12 down to beat them in January.

The Bears ended the first half Wednesday night on a 9-0 run to take a 41-24 lead into the locker room. Kansas State was just 1 for 12 from beyond the 3-point arc at that point, and veteran forward Coleman Hawkins — who scored 26 points against the Sun Devils — was 0 for 4 from the field and quickly growing frustrated.

Kansas State closed within 58-46 with 8 minutes to go, but Hawkins was whistled for a flagrant foul contesting Edgecombe’s dunk, and Jeremy Roach added a basket after his foul shots to help Baylor pull away again.

Kansas State finished 3 of 25 from beyond the arc. Hawkins and McDaniel were each 1 for 6.

Baylor improved to 15-2 when holding an opponent to 70 points or less this season.

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. was hit on the forearm by a pitch and left a spring training game against Seattle on Wednesday, but X-rays came back negative and the club said its young All-Star will continue to be evaluated.

Witt immediately fell to the ground after he was struck by a 95 mph fastball thrown by Andrés Muñoz in the fifth inning. He walked to the dugout after being tended to by a trainer and tried to shake off the pain before heading to the clubhouse.

The Royals described his injury as a contusion and did not say how long he would be out.

Witt was the runner-up to Yankees slugger Aaron Judge in the AL MVP race after hitting .332 with 32 homers and 109 RBIs in 161 games last year. He led the AL with 211 hits in his third big league season.

🏀 3A state tournament begins today at Sports Arena

Buhler High School athletic director Justin Seuser has announced Ashley Nehls will be the next head volleyball coach, beginning with the 2025 season.

Nehls was approved at the USD 313 Buhler March Board Meeting held on Tuesday evening.

She brings a wealth of knowledge with head coaching stints at Dodge City Community College and William Woods University (Mo.). She also has numerous years coaching club volleyball throughout the midwest. Nehls' most recent head job at the school level was at Emporia High School.

Nehls played collegiately at Butler Community College from 2004-06, where she led the Grizzlies in aces.&nbsp;

Nehls' husband, Brock, is the head baseball coach at Hutchinson Community College, and is in his second season.
