🏐 Blue Dragons fall to Cougars in Top 20 KJCCC showdown

The Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team saw its four-match winning streak snapped on Wednesday.

The No. 20-ranked Blue Dragons won the first set against Barton, but the No. 18 Cougars rallied to win the next three in a Jayhawk Conference battle at the Sports Arena. The Dragons lost 25-15, 18-25, 24-26, 18-25, falling to the Cougars for the seventh-consecutive time.

The Blue Dragons fell to 14-8 overall and are 6-2 in the Jayhawk. The Dragons are off on Saturday and will return to action next Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Sports Arena to open the second half of conference play against Seward County. Barton is now 15-7 overall and 5-2 in the KJCCC.

Freshman outside hitter Giovanna Monteiro hit .200 with a match-high 21 kills on a season-high 60 attacks to lead the Blue Dragons. This was the sixth time this season Monteiro has had 20 or more kills. She posted her 14th double-double of the season with 12 digs.

Sophomore Lauren Vasquez hit .192 with nine kills on 33 attacks. Freshman middle blocker Addison Hansen had six kills and a season-high six total blocks. Julia Macedo had six kills.

The Blue Dragons were outhit .195-.129. Hutchinson hit .211 in its first-set victory, but hit only .091 over the final three sets, while the Cougars hit .242.

Freshman setter Klaudia Bilinksa had 36 assists and nine digs for the Blue Dragons. Sophomore libero Clara Oliveira had 20 digs, reaching the 20-dig mark for the 17th time.

Kiera Loe had 19 kills, while Amada Riepe had 14 and Mariam Urazbackhtina had 11 kills.

The Blue Dragons out-blocked the Cougars 10-6, reaching 10 or more team blocks for the fourth time this season. Barton out-dug the Dragons 78-69.

SET 1: The Blue Dragons got off to a tremendous start jumping out to leads of 5-0, 8-1 and 12-3 after a Vasquez kill. The Cougars answered back with a 6-1 run to pull within 13-9. The Dragons countered with an 8-2 run, getting a pair of Bilinksa ace serves and a Hansen/Macedo double block for a 20-10 lead. The Dragons closed out the set with a Hansen kill, Barton attack error and a Mattie Galliher kill for a 25-15 win.

SET 2: Barton had the fast start in this set building an 8-3 lead. The Dragons went on a 4-1 run, getting a Galliher/Monteiro block to pull within 8-6. But the Cougars, who hit .259 in the second set, steadily pulled away, eventually building a 20-13 lead. Monteiro had seven of Hutchinson's 11 kills in the second set, but the Cougars combined for 17 kills to win the set 25-18.

SET 3: The third set featured 11 ties and five lead changes. The Dragons had an early 7-3 lead after back-to-back Barton errors, but the Cougars scored five-straight to lead 8-7. A Monteiro kill gave the Dragons an 11-9 lead. A Hansen/Macedo double block tied the set at 14. Trailing 22-20, Hansen and Monteiro had a block, Monteiro had an ace and Hansen had a kill for a 23-22 lead. The Dragons fought off a set point with a Vasquez kill to knot the set at 24. Barton scored the final two points of the set to win 26-24 and take a 2-1 match lead.

SET 4: An early 5-0 Barton run put the Dragons in at early hole trailing 7-3. Down 10-4, Hutchinson put together a 6-1 run to pull within 11-10. A Monteiro kill cut the Barton lead to 15-14. But the Cougars used a 5-1 run to take control of the set at 18-14. Barton hit .351 in the final set to close out the victory.
