Receiver Nakai Poole and linebacker Jack Sells had huge games to lead the Hutchinson Community College football team in a 26-0 victory over Iowa Western in a nationally televised battle between the Nos. 2 and 1 teams in the nation on Saturday.
The Jayhawk Conference recognized Poole as the league's Week 6 Offensive Player of the Week and Sells as the KJCCC's Defensive Player of the Week. They are the eighth and ninth Blue Dragon players to earn weekly conference honors this season.
Poole had career highs for receptions, yards and his longest reception against the Reivers on Saturday. Poole caught five passes for 128 yards and a touchdown against the Reivers. Poole caught a career-long 79-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Randy Phillips late in the third quarter that broke the game open, giving the Dragons a 19-0 lead. Poole now has 10 catches for 181 yards and two touchdowns for the season.
Sells tallied a career-high 12 tackles against Iowa Western. Sells had six unassisted tackles and was in on 6 more tackles as the Blue Dragons administered their third-straight shutout, something that hasn't been done since 1950. Sells also had 1.5 tackles for loss. Sells now has a team-high 32 tackles with 7.0 tackles for loss and 1.5 quarterback sacks for the season.
Pool is the fourth Blue Dragon to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors and Sell is the second player from Hutchinson to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors.
