Lawrence “Larry” O. Smith, Jr., 88, a McPherson, KS resident since 1976, peacefully passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2023.&nbsp;

Larry was born on April 21, 1935, in Henderson, TN, the son of Lawrence O. Smith, Sr. and Bessie (Andrews) Smith.&nbsp; He was raised in Van Vleet, MS.&nbsp; Larry graduated from Mississippi State University in 1963.&nbsp; On August 6, 1960, Larry was united in marriage to Nancy June Ledbetter in Henderson, TN.&nbsp;

Larry served in the United States Army during the Korean War era.&nbsp; He retired from a pharmaceutical company, Sanofi-Winthrop/Abbott Labs, in McPherson.

Survivors include: his loving wife of 63 years, Nancy; two sons, Blair (Casey) Smith of Olathe, KS and Clint (Melissa) Smith of McPherson, KS; five grandchildren, Carson Olivia Smith of Tulsa, OK, Sawyer Henry Smith of Kansas City, KS, Garrett Lane Smith of Olathe, KS, Harper Elizabeth Smith of McPherson, KS, and Ashton Cole Smith of Olathe, KS; sister, Sarah Wyatt of Jonesboro, AR; and many extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Loren Dale Smith.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Friday, September 1, 2023, at Stockham Family Funeral Home.&nbsp; The funeral service will be held at 9:30 AM, Saturday, September 2, at McPherson Church of Christ.&nbsp; Burial with Military Honors will follow at McPherson Cemetery.

Raymond Gene Ghere passed away at the age of 90 on August 22, 2023 at his rural Sedgwick, KS home surrounded by his loving family. Raymond was born on May 25, 1933 at the family home in rural Harper, KS. He was the third boy born in a family of 6 boys and 1 girl to Russell and Inez Ghere.

Raymond graduated from Harper High School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Japan, during the Korean War from 1953-1955. He enjoyed telling stories of his time there including riding on the ship to Japan for days and being seasick the whole time. Right up until the end, he could still speak a couple of phrases of Japanese that he learned while serving his time there. Shortly after completing his tour in the Army, he met Marilyn Lee Cave on a blind date and it was love at first sight! They married on March 24, 1957, and built their home outside of Sedgwick in 1972. They celebrated 66 years together this year. Raymond enjoyed working as a truck driver and salesman in the Wichita area for many years, driving for Steffen’s Dairy and Roadway Express. He retired from Roadway in 1999 after 25 years. He loved driving the semi-trucks and thoroughly enjoyed his regular customers.

Family has always been Raymond’s number one priority. He was the most loving dad and taught all of his kids so many life lessons growing up, without the help of any parenting book or website. He greatly enjoyed his grandkids and loved to make them laugh! In retirement, he could often be found making a fun new toy or activity for them to play with during their next visit. He raised many different animals throughout the years for the grandkids to enjoy including goats, chickens, pigeons, and puppies which were some of the grandkid’s favorites. He also kept busy attending many of the grandkid’s activities and was one of their biggest fans. Raymond also thoroughly enjoyed helping others by fixing their lawn mowers and other small engine equipment and it was rare for him not to be able to figure out how to fix something and get it running again.&nbsp;

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Howard, Leonard, and Floyd.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Marilyn of the home; and three children, Lea Ann (Joe) Mitchem of Sedgwick, Jeff (Jana) Ghere of Whitewater, Lisa (Rusty) Jolliff of Newton; grandchildren, Jacob (Sara) Mitchem, Justin (Clarissa) Ghere, John Mitchem and Tessa Feemster, Julie (Josh) Abel, Leslea Mitchem, Kate Jolliff, and Jesse Ghere; great grandchildren, Dylan Dean, Aubrey Ghere and Jack Ghere; siblings, Clyde (Sharol) Ghere of Harper, Carl (Jude) Ghere of Medora, and Pauline (Doug) Oliver of Harper, many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family.&nbsp;

A Celebration of Life for Raymond will be held on Friday, September 1,,&nbsp;2023, at 10:00 am at Grace Fellowship Church formerly Sedgwick United Methodist Church in Sedgwick, Kansas with the graveside burial at Hillside Cemetery following the service. Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at the church from 5-8pm.

The family greatly appreciates all the wonderful caregivers from Good Shepherd Hospice, Homewell Care Services, Frankie’s Girls, and Linda Hingst, who helped the family honor Raymond’s wish to stay in his home until the end.

The family has suggested memorials to The Meeting Place, The Sedgwick Senior Center, Grace Fellowship Church, and The Alzheimer’s Association.&nbsp;

Raymond will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.&nbsp;

Steven Paul Maxwell, 59, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 25, 2023 at Hospice House, Hutchinson, KS. He was born April 4, 1964, in Oklahoma City, OK to Louis D. and Alice M. (James) Maxwell.

On December 5, 2013, Steve married Linda McCoy Womack in Las Vegas, NV. Steven joined the United States Army on August 14, 1983. He proudly served his country in the Gulf War and after 10 years, he honorably discharged on June 9, 1992. Steven was a truck driver and local business owner. He was an avid fisherman and was a craftsman. There was no limit to what he could do with his hands. He enjoyed spending his time with family and friends. Steve took special pride in his grandchildren and every moment was a teaching moment.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; children, Paul (Brittney) Maxwell, Lindsay (Nick) Hemphill and Shayne Shields; grandchildren, Cheyenne, Avery and Aubrey Maxwell, Colton and Kaden Kinzel, Layne and Tate Shields; step-mother, Carol Maxwell; brother, Butch Maxwell; and sister, Cheri Ogg. While his time on earth was shortened, his legacy will live on through all of the individuals that crossed his path.

Arletta M. Fish, 85, of Raymond, KS, passed away August 25, 2023, at Hospice House in Hutchinson. Arletta was born February 16, 1938, near Susank, KS to Marion E. and Leona (Susank) Byers.&nbsp;

Arletta graduated from Hoisington High school in 1956. On March 23, 1958, she married Charles H. Fish in Hoisington, KS, sharing just over 57 years of marriage.

Arletta is survived by a sister, Loree Gilpin of Pratt and a brother, Jim (Jacque) Byers of Joplin, MO. Two sons, Craig R. (and wife) Fish of Great Bend, and Kirk L. (Tammy) Fish of Raymond. One daughter, Karyn M. (Kurt) Schemm of Derby. Six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and two sisters.

Arletta worked for USD 401 Chase/Raymond as a school bus driver for many years while assisting Charles with the family business, Fish Service Station in Raymond.

Arletta was a member of Raymond Baptist Church where she organized music, sang and played the organ for 54 years. Arletta enjoyed music, quilting, sewing, baking and an occasional slot machine. She was well known in her community for her ‘Arletta’s famous pies’.&nbsp;

Celebration of life will be 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Raymond Community Center. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary, until the day of the service.

Janetta Faye White was born August 25, 1956, to Billy and Rachel Graves in Corydon, Indiana. She passed away August 22, 2023 surrounded by family in Hutchinson, Kansas.&nbsp;

In her early years she worked in the food industry. She loved doing crafts to give to family members, doing puzzles/ card games, and bingo nights. Above all, her most favorite thing to do was spending time with her family and friends. Known by many as “Faye”, she was sure to always make people laugh or smile in her presence. Her legacy is her family and the love she gave to them. From the moment her first grandchild was born she proudly went by “Nana”. She was a truly special woman who loved to tell stories to the kids and even went on to write one including the names of the grandchildren as a special treat. Her love went beyond blood ties as she adopted many into her heart as her own. A daughter, sister, wife, Nana, Aunt, Friend, or just someone who always provided a smile, she will be dearly missed by all.

On November 18, 1994, she married Donald Glenn White in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Florence “Evelyn” (Mather) Fitz Roy 89, died peacefully on August 26, 2023, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Center in Wichita, Kansas. On June 16, 1934, Evelyn arrived the ninth of 12 children born to Jacob P. and Susie (Bigbee) Mather on a farm 10 miles S.W. of Grinnell, Kansas. She grew up in a happy Christian home.&nbsp; At a young age she helped cook and feed the harvest crews during wheat harvest. In 1952 she graduated from Grinnell High School continuing her education at Wichita Business College for one year.

Evelyn married Walter Hayes in 1957 and worked with him in his business.&nbsp; In 1975 she married Don Fitz Roy. At this time, she began working at Learjet as a secretary until her retirement in 1996.

Eveyln is survived by her children Kelly &amp; Denise Hayes; Kathleen Hayes; Steven and Sue Hayes; Rebecca Marcus; and Marc and Lisa Fitz Roy. She is also survived by her sister Wilma Taylor and Marge Wilson; seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was a devoted NASCAR fan watching every race. Sunday afternoon was a “no visit” time when a race was on.&nbsp; She loved to spend time with family, friends and traveling. Some of her travels included Germany, touring the east coast lighthouses, Alaska and a few cruises.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands Don FitzRoy and Walter Hayes, 7 brothers, 2 sisters and stepdaughter Traci Eason.

Memorials may be made to the Grinnell Methodist Church and left with Petersen Funeral Home.

A graveside committal service will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at Petersen Funeral Home.

“You wouldn't believe it!” Dr. William Joseph Ciskey went to be with his Lord and Savior August 25, 2023, in Hutchinson. He was born in Chariton, IA, to Raymond and Barbara Ciskey.

Bill was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, brother, and KU fanatic. He attended Hayden High School, Washburn University, and received his Family Practice Degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1973.

Bill married Linda Kessinger (deceased) in 1968. &nbsp;

He was loved intensely by his family: wife, Nancy; daughter, Jennifer (Troy), daughter, Allison (Jake), stepson, Ron (Helen), stepdaughter, Jessika-Ann (Shaun), son, Joe (Amanda), brother, Richard, brother, Michael (Bobbie), brother, Mark (Debra), sister, Janice (David), sister, Kathleen (Charles); 18 grandchildren, Mason, Shea, Korbin, Riley, Lucas, Chloe, Graham, Berkley, Wesley, Dade, Trystan, Lottie, Kentleigh, Kahler, Wynne, Brenda, Requiem, Manna; 2 great-grandchildren, Kian and Spencer; nieces and nephews, Chris, Jessica, Scott, Daniel, Adrienne, Noah, Kelly, Amelia, Joel, Claire, Cody, and Joseph.

Although Bill’s life was devoted to serving his patients, he also enjoyed many things in his life, including being a pilot, beekeeping, ranching, hunting, stamp collecting, and being a devoted supporter of KU athletics. “Rock Chalk!”

He was born in Chariton, IA, to Raymond and Barbara Ciskey.Bill was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, brother, and KU fanatic. Peggy Joyce Scott of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away surrounded by family and friends on August 24, 2023, at Hospice House in Hutchinson. She was 89 years old.

Born on December 3, 1933, in Milledgeville, Georgia, Peggy was the daughter of Samuel Arthur Evans and Clara Belle (Worsham) Evans. She grew up in Milledgeville and graduated from Peabody High School.

Peggy dedicated 23 years of her life to serving others as a receptionist/clerk at McPherson Floral. Her friendly nature and attention to detail touched the lives of countless customers who sought joy through beautiful flowers. She truly valued the importance of bringing smiles to people's faces during both moments of celebration and times of sorrow.

She was a longtime member of the First Christian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Peggy's greatest role was that of a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She married the love of her life Carrol "Scotty" E. Scott, and together they built a remarkable life full of love, laughter, and shared experiences. Peggy cherished their union of 57 years until his passing on February 25, 2011.

Peggy is survived by her beloved daughter, Patricia "Trish" Scott of McPherson, Kansas. Trish provided endless love and support to her mother until the very end. In addition to Trish, Peggy's grandchildren, Chris Swick of Manhattan, KS and Rebecca (Matthew) Sanchelli of Overland Park, KS, were the light of her life and held a very special place in her heart. She adored them beyond measure and cherished every moment spent together. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Harold (Wanda) Scott of McPherson, KS; and many loyal &amp; faithful friends.

Peggy's family was the center of her world.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Gary Scott; a brother, Lamar Cullens; and sister, Debbie Clance.&nbsp;

A graveside service will be held at 9:30 AM, Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at McPherson Cemetery with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, at the First Christian Church with Rev. Lynn Scott officiating.

Kim graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1977. She enjoyed diamond art, and the chiefs. She loved watching the chiefs play football.

Thomas Harley Long, 85, died August 24, 2023. He was born February 18, 1938, in Sterling, to Harley and Ola (Price) Long.

Tom attended Sylvia Rural High School, graduating in 1956. He then attended Hutchinson Community College. Tom served in the United States Army from 1960-1962. He was a master carpenter, remodeling and building homes in Reno County. Tom was a Construction Supervisor at Hutchinson Correctional Facility, retiring in 2006. He built almost anything you could imagine, but especially enjoyed building remote control airplanes. Tom also enjoyed automotive repair, gardening, fishing, and reading DIY books. But most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending every event they had.

On February 14, 1997, Tom married Cleta Dewey in Hutchinson. She survives.

Also surviving are: his son, Mark Long; grandson, Josh Long; stepchildren, Melanie Chappel, Monica Bornholdt (Jarrod), James Bussell (Tricia), Julie and Amy Owen; ex son-in-law, Jon Chappel; step-grandchildren, Jonathan Chappel, Jerome and Jake Love, Macy Spencer (Corey Mahoney), Maleigha Bornholdt, Vanessa and Tristen Mendoza; 8 step-great-grandchildren; niece and nephews, Diana Tucker (Dennis), Monte Long (Carla), Fred Long (Elaine), Randy Long (Marla), Jerald Long (Susan).

He was preceded in death by: his parents; siblings, Don, Fred, Phyllis, and Ray Long; and granddaughter, Demi Long.

On August 23, 2023, Gary Knight, surrounded by his wife, Janet Knight, daughter, Amanda Knight, grandson, Joe Martinez, grandson Gabriel Hill, granddaughter, Allee Mae Hill, Hospice nurse, Karen (The Captain) and Hospice Chaplain, Cindy, went to be with the Heavenly Father.

Gary Lee Knight, born February 23, 1949, in Ottumwa, Iowa to Frank E. Knight and Betty Knight Wymore. Gary married his wife, Janet L Knight January 26, 1985, in Ottumwa, Iowa. They were blessed with two children. A son, Anthony William Knight, who is in heaven, and a daughter, Amanda Janelle Knight, of South Hutchinson.

Gary’s occupation was Industrial Mechanics, working in California, Iowa, Nevada, Arizona and Kansas. He retired from Tyson Foods in South Hutchinson after 20 years of service. He was always the “go to” man to fix and figure out a solution. The man with the beard filled with a world of knowledge and wisdom. Gary was the man who never knew a stranger and could talk to anyone. Every chance he got he would always try to teach you something- giving you a piece of his wisdom. His smile would automatically light up the room. He loved to tell jokes and making people laugh was one of his specialties. He was always there to help anyone that was in need and needed help. He would give his shirt off his back if someone needed it. If you were lucky enough to have known Gary, you would agree that he has left you with a piece of him to remember him by. He was “The Man”, “The Myth”, “The Legend”. He will forever live on looking down on us, still teaching us, each and every day.

Survivors include: his wife, Janet Knight; daughter, Amanda Knight; and grandchildren, Joe Martinez, Gabriel Hill, and Allee Hill all of South Hutchinson; son, James Knight (Tina), Ottumwa, Iowa, Shawn Knight (Tonya), Ottumwa Iowa, and Nickie Cole (Chris) of Cedar Rapids Iowa.

Gary Knight |1949-2023|

Eldon E. Bontrager, 91, died August 22, 2023, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;He was born May 5, 1932, in Thomas, OK, to Eli S. and Delila (Miller) Bontrager.

Eldon was a farmer and the founder of Bontrager Custom Cabinets. &nbsp;He built kitchens for many homes in the area. &nbsp;For the past 18 years, Eldon was the early morning baker at Carolyn’s Essenhaus in Arlington, KS. &nbsp;He did not know a stranger and had an amazing ability to remember names and dates accurately.

Eldon grew up in Oklahoma and often spoke fondly of his boyhood days. He attended a one room school right next to their farm. A vivid memory was the day the schoolhouse burned down in 1938 when he was in the 1st grade.

When the draft was instated during the Korean War he went to work in a hospital in Kansas City. He often spoke of those years and how they contributed to strengthening his faith. He came back to marry Mary Ellen Yoder on his 23rd birthday in 1955 and they were privileged to celebrate 68 years together. They began married life in the Hutchinson, KS area, and moved to Kalona, IA for almost 3 years seeking medical help for Lynette. They returned in January of 1960. Many dreams and hopes were relinquished in the coming years as God called them to a life requiring much grace and endurance caring for their three handicapped daughters.

Eldon worked at Detroiter Manufacturing doing plumbing and then building cabinets. Later he was a partner of Prairie Construction and continued doing cabinets and trim work. After their move to Arlington he eventually started building cabinets on his own and Bontrager Custom Cabinets was founded.

In Aug. of 1968 they bought a farm and moved to the Arlington area. To some it seemed they moved to western Kansas. Eldon’s friendly personality built many relationships over the years. &nbsp;In 1998 they relocated to a smaller house across the drive to retire...but he did not retire. He continued farming and at age 70 he began working the early shift at Carolyn’s Essenhaus. He did that for 18 years and loved it. It was a good fit for him since he was often awake early anyway. He whistled as he fried donuts and assembled pies, and it fell to him to call the waitress if she overslept and needed a nudge. He was also the general maintenance man and fixed many things that malfunctioned. He knew no stranger and enjoyed many a glass of tea at the round table where the locals gathered daily to solve the world’s problems.&nbsp;

Eldon had rheumatic fever as a youth and knew his heart needed special care so he walked several miles almost daily. A pace maker supported his heart since 2015. He loved to drive around the countryside to check out the fields and see how everyone’s crops were doing. Not much escaped his watchful eye. He had a photographic memory and could remember dates and names with amazing accuracy. In these last few years we learned many things about people we did not know.&nbsp;

In 2020 Eldon spent 5 weeks in the hospital with Covid and his lungs were somewhat compromised since. &nbsp;He desperately wanted to get back to the restaurant and back to work but was never able. He avoided the recliner as long as he could, believing it would cause him to become decrepit. His work was his hobby.&nbsp;

He faithfully led his household in a daily devotional time and was a strong supporter of his church. His many stories about his time in 1W service inspired all his children to go into VS and many grandchildren have followed in his footsteps. It was his desire that God be glorified by his life.

Eldon is survived by: Mary Ellen, his wife of 68 years; children, Carolyn Bontrager, Arlington, Myron (Ilene) Bontrager, Arlington, Phyllis (Gareth) Yoder, Timpson, TX, and Marilyn (Dan) Korver, Ladysmith, WI; daughter-in-law, Mamie Bontrager, Arlington; 27 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; brothers, Vernon (Alta) Bontrager and Perry Bontrager; sister, Anna Mae Ropp; and sister-in-law, Esther Bontrager.

He was preceded in death by: &nbsp;his parents; children, Lynette Bontrager, LaVon Bontrager, Faith Bontrager, and Regina Bontrager; three stillborn grandchildren; siblings, Ruby Miller and husband Alvin, Henry Bontrager and wife Lydia Mae, Joe Bontrager and wife Salina, Sarah (stillborn), and Floyd Bontrager; brother-in-law, Lloyd Ropp; and sister-in-law, Pauline Bontrager.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday, August 28, 2023, at the Arlington Amish Mennonite Church, 15611 W. Arlington Road, Arlington, KS. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the church cemetery. &nbsp;Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, August 27, 2023, with the family present at the church.

In these last few years we learned many things about people we did not know.&nbsp;In 2020 Eldon spent 5 weeks in the hospital with Covid and his lungs were somewhat compromised since. &nbsp;He desperately wanted to get back to the restaurant and back to work but was never able. He avoided the recliner as long as he could, believing it would cause him to become decrepit. His work was his hobby.&nbsp;He faithfully led his household in a daily devotional time and was a strong supporter of his church. His many stories about his time in 1W service inspired all his children to go into VS and many grandchildren have followed in his footsteps. Margaret Elaine Fehrenbacher, 101, died August 23, 2023, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born March 11, 1922, in Moscow, KS, to Harold and Ila (Lindsey) Cadman.

Elaine graduated from Moscow High School and was an insurance coordinator for Kinsley Hospital for many years.

She loved reading, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and watching Jeopardy. Even at 101 years young, was a very sharp lady. She also enjoyed flowers and gardening.

On February 14, 1944, she married Howard Eugene Fehrenbacher, in St. John, KS. They shared 58 years of marriage, prior to his death on August 20, 2002.

Elaine is survived by: children, Lonnie Fehrenbacher of Larned and Marita (Randy) Fisher of Wichita; grandchildren, Kevin, Dena, Maranda, Caradee, Landry, and Lindsy; 18 great- grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Schryl Fehrenbacher of Kingsville, TX.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; son, Larry; daughter, Rosemary; grandson, Travis Fisher; and seven siblings. &nbsp;

David Allen Polley, 64, of Nickerson, died August 23, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita. He was born March 21, 1959, in Georgetown, OH, to Grover and Barbara (Hauke) Polley.

David graduated from Ripley Union High School in Ripley, OH, in 1977. He served in the United States Army from 1977 until he retired at Fort Riley in 1997. David then moved to Hutchinson and worked as a guard at Hutchinson Correctional facility for a few years before taking a job at Capstone Logistics. He had worked there over 20 years and was working as Lead at the time of his death. David enjoyed being outdoors – hunting and fishing – and spending time with his grandchildren.

On September 21, 2018, he married Ginger L. Cota, in Nickerson. She survives.

Also surviving are: his stepchildren, Erin Cota (Kathrine) of Hutchinson, McKenzie Cota (Bobby Gonzales) of Nickerson, Carl Williams of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Michael Cota, Niko Gonzales; mother, Barbara Polley of Ripley, OH; brother, Daniel Polley of Ripley, OH; and many extended family members.

David was preceded in death by: his father; and brothers, Jerald, James, and Donald.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned.

Peggy Lois Black-Pianga,&nbsp;95, passed away on Friday, August 18, 2023 in Wichita, Kansas. She was born in Beggs, Oklahoma to John Riley Hill and Ruth Eldora Robertson. Lois was a life-long resident of Valley Center. For many years she owned and operated Craft Corner in Valley Center and Wichita. She loved crafts especially oil painting and crochet work. In her earlier years she baked and decorated birthday and wedding cakes for the people of Valley Center and surrounding communities.

Taken from Lois’s autobiography written 1999 -&nbsp;

“Even before I had children, I became a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. My church work included teaching a 4th grade class, serving in Sunday School nursery, financial secretary, circle chairman. Bazaar chairman, and vacation bible school chairman. Keeping busy and making things was always what I did. I guess I inherited the crafty side from my mother. I was always sewing things. I have also been active in the Extension Homemakers United and Sugar Bells Cake Club.”

She is preceded in death by her son David T. Black, grandson Bradley Mullinax, granddaughter Jennifer Ann Black Tucker, her parents John and Ruth Hill, sisters Glenna Woodruff and Ruth Rahm, and her brother John R. Hill Jr. ‘Bud’.&nbsp;

Stephen Pierce Biddle died August 15, 2023 at his home in the Paramount Community and Rehab Center in Newton, Kansas.&nbsp; Dr. Biddle received his Bachelor’s degree from Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas and received his PhD in Theater Arts from the University of Kansas as well as a Doctor of Divinity from Bangor Theological Seminary.

Creative writing was his passion. As an author and playwright, he wrote twenty-two plays of which seven were produced. His Master's Thesis entitled,&nbsp;The Canteen, was produced by the Menninger Foundation in 1967.&nbsp; His play&nbsp;Quantrill&nbsp;about William Quantrill and the Quantrill raid on Lawrence, Kansas was produced at the University of Kansas. A popular success, it was extended two weeks during the spring of 1970. In 1971 Stephen was awarded a Shubert Fellowship.&nbsp;In 1975 his play,&nbsp;Walter World,&nbsp;was produced by Judson's Poet's Theater in New York City.&nbsp;

As an educator Dr. Biddle taught at the University of Kansas, Baker University, and Ottawa University. In retirement, he continued to write short stories, patiently typing his manuscripts on his favorite and trusty IBM electric typewriter. One of his great enjoyments was to put on his headphones and listen to music by his favorite composer, Beethoven.&nbsp; In July of this year Stephen celebrated his 79th birthday and was actively engage in his community until his death.

Stephen Biddle was born in Westfield, Massachusetts the son of Rev. Roger Biddle and Opal Biddle, both deceased. He is survived by his daughter Stephanie and her husband Josh, his former wife Phyllis Lautz Biddle, a brother Mark and his wife Karen, and a nephew Nate and his wife Lisa.

A memorial service will be held at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church on September 20 at 2:00 PM. Visitors and friends are invited to attend the memorial service. The internment will be a Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburgh Kansas on September 21 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Baker University.

Duane L McGowen – Born March 8, 1936 in Laverne, OK to Virgil &amp; Gertrude McGowen, died August 19, 2023 in Hutchinson, KS. 

He was a graduate of Johnson High School (today’s Stanton County High School), Johnson, KS. After graduation he served in the United States Army for 3 years, then transferred to the United States Airforce serving 4 years and then returned to the United States Army serving 4 more years. He was Honorably Discharged having earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal – 2 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal Device 60, Good Conduct Medal, Sharpshooter (Rifle M-14) and the Parachutist Badge. Duane then moved to Hutchinson where he was a clerk for the United States Postal Service for 25 years. After retirement from USPS, he worked at WalMart for approximately 15 years.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Raymond, Vernon &amp; Patricia McGowen, Juanita Austin, Yvonne Foster &amp; sister-in-law Nadine McGowen.

Survived by his children: Tonya &amp; Darin Gehring, Buhler, Kim &amp; Bill Rupp, Moundridge, Laura &amp; Theodore Dawson, Newton and Jay &amp; William Malone, Hutchinson. Grandchildren: Adam (Becky) Gehring of Buhler, Megan (John) Sizemore and Jessika (Dennis) Board of Hutchinson, Brianna Jones-Rupp of Wichita, Brayden Rupp of Moundridge and Ridge, Breckyn (Bret Schmidt) &amp; Aspyn Dawson of Newton. Lori Macy, 61, died August 22, 2023, surrounded by her family, at Pleasant View Home, Inman. She was born August 25, 1961, in Temple Hills, MD, to Harry Franklin III and Dorothy Lorraine (Reder) Biery.

Lori, known by her family as “Gordy”, was a homemaker. &nbsp;She was a collector of numerous figurines and passionate about her dogs. &nbsp;Lori had an infectious smile that made everyone around her feel welcomed and loved.

On April 20, 1981, she married Jacky Duane Macy, in Hollis, OK. &nbsp;

Lori is survived by: &nbsp;her husband of 42 years, Jacky Macy of Hutchinson; son, Jeremie Biery (Cassie) of Salina; siblings, Robert Biery, Frank Biery (Serenia), Bud Biery (Kim), all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Julie Moss of Texas, Clay Huff, Kade Biery, and Joey Biery, all of Salina; her best friend for over 23 years, Barbie; numerous nieces and nephews; and her Bluestem Pace family.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son, Brian Keith.

Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 25, 2023, in the Hester Chapel, located at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Richard Joseph Webb III, 73, of Walker, KS, died, Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at his home. He was born December 22, 1949, in Hutchinson, KS to Richard Joseph and Mary Helen (Urban) Webb, Jr. His life partner was Louise Virginia Sheets. They were together for over 20 years until her passing on May 14, 2014.

He was a retired construction foreman and a veteran of the United States Navy. He served during the Vietnam War and received two Purple Hearts and other service medals. Richard grew up in South Hutchinson, KS and attended high school in Nickerson, KS. He has lived in Walker, KS since 1995. Richard was a member of Victoria V.F.W. Post #1751, Military Honor Guard Funeral Detail, and attended St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Walker, KS.

Richard is survived by: his mother, Mary Helen Webb, South Hutchinson, KS; siblings, Catherine Hixon, Patricia (Harlon) Best, Barbara Webb all of Hutchinson, KS, Frances (Robert) Ronnau, Christine Webb-Mikesell, all of Mesa, AZ, Rita (Kris) Carpenter, Colwich, KS, Mary Walker and David Cunningham, Overland Park, KS, David Webb and Daniel Webb, both of South Hutchinson, KS; numerous nieces and nephews.

David W. Snodgrass, 63, of Haven, Kansas passed away Monday, August 14, 2023 at his home. He was born July 6, 1960 in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Dale L. and Barbara (Jacob) Snodgrass.

He graduated from Haven High School with the class of 1978.

David worked as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service and was also a NALC union member for 38 years, retiring in 2017.

He was united in marriage to Cynthia Preisser on June 4, 1983 in St. Joe, Kansas.

He never knew a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Above everything, David loved his children and grandchildren.

David is survived by his wife, Cindy Snodgrass of the home; sons, Jared (Savannah) Snodgrass of Sterling, and Dylan Snodgrass of Haven; three grandchildren, Cody, Penelope, and Jackson Snodgrass of Sterling; two brothers, Jack (Valerie) Snodgrass and John Snodgrass, both of Mt. Hope; and nephew and niece, Jeremy and Nicole.
