Thomas N. Frederick, 89, entered the presence of the Lord on October 10, 2022, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, surrounded by his family. He was born July 14, 1933, in Alden, the son of Guy “Ham” and Grace (Belden). 

Tom graduated Alden High School in 1951 and continued his education at Kansas State University. He graduated with a degree in Agricultural Economics in 1956. Tom was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, where he made many lifetime friends from across the state. 

Tom was united in marriage to Shirley (Moran) on September 30, 1956, in Sylvia. They recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. He joined the army in 1956 where he was active duty for six years. Tom and Shirley moved to Hielbronn, Germany for two years while serving at the U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart. Upon returning from Germany, Tom worked at the Alden State Bank for over sixty-one years. Tom and Shirley built their home in Alden, raising three children, Le’Ann, Lance, and Drew. It was a family joke that Tom was a banker and ended up with all three children growing up to be custom harvesters. Love of family and being called, “Papa” was his greatest joy. Tom was a community servant, serving as the mayor of the City of Alden for 18 years. One of Tom’s great loves was nature and landscaping, so you would always see him around town trimming trees and spraying weeds. Tom was an elder and longtime song leader at the Sylvia Church of Christ. He was known as a gentle and faithful man who loved his church family dearly. 

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Grace; and brother, Terry Frederick. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Le’Ann (Michael Dolechek) of Claflin; son, Lance (Lynette) of Alden; son, Drew (Connie) of Alden; grandchildren, Dane (Kristin) of Claflin; Zachary (Brooke) of Sterling; Zayn of Alden; Kassidy of Wichita; Karly of Lyons; and great-grandchild, Grayson of Sterling. 

Funeral service will be at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, October 15, 2022, at the Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with Matt Fowler officiating. Burial will follow at the Alden Valley Cemetery with military honors. Brad graduated from St. John High School in 1972, and attended Emporia State University.&nbsp; He served in the United States Navy from 1972 to 1976.&nbsp; Before retirement, Brad worked as a car salesman.&nbsp; In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf and watching KU basketball.

On July 8, 1989, he married Elizabeth Adams, in Emporia.&nbsp; They shared 33 years of marriage.

Brad is survived by: &nbsp;his wife, Elizabeth Adams Mansel of Hutchinson; daughters, Abigail Mansel (Geoff McCall) of Fort Collins, CO and Molly Mansel of Strong City; his mother, Dena Mansel of St. John; siblings, Jon Mansel (Vicky) of Manhattan, Brenda Mansel Reno of St. John, April Swartz (Bill) of Manhattan, and Kelly Mansel-Ramsey of Olathe; and numerous nieces and nephews.

8, 2022. Alice was born in Hutchinson, Kansas on August 28, 1959. &nbsp;Alice was the oldest child out of seven;
sibling includes James (Nancy) Pitts Jr., Judith Beacham, Harry (Sherry) Pitts,
Edith (Jose) Castaneda, Patricia (Mike) Hoffman and half-brother, Mike Pitts
and her stepmother Joyce Ploog.

Alice had her oldest daughter, Michele Lynn Pitts-Zubia, followed
by yet another girl, Shirley Marie Pitts-Wanjau and stepson Michael Johnson. &nbsp;Alice worked as a homemaker throughout most of
her life while raising children and grandchildren. 

Survivors include her daughters, Michele Lynn Pitts-Zubia, Shirley
(Lawrence) Wanjau; stepson, Michael Johnson; eight grandchildren, Luis, Carlos,
Cosme, Luisa, Harry, Pedro, Christian, Wachira (WA (she)Rah) and two great grandchildren,
Angel, Xavian.

Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Shirley Novotny
and James Pitts Sr., brother, Harry Pitts; grandson, Luis Pitts and many more grandparents.


Alice had many names she went by that include Mom,
Grandmother, GG, Granny, Nanna and “Ally Cat.” Alice enjoyed arts and crafts,
being part of the Red Hats, baking and spending time with grandchildren. Alice had
a heart of gold and loved to give. If you were one of the lucky ones, you received
her hand-crafted holiday cards that put a smile on your face. You could never
leave her house without food or candy.

Judy Schrater, 80, passed away October 10, 2022, at Brookdale Tallgrass, Wichita, KS.&nbsp; She was born September 17, 1942, in Hutchinson, to Herbert ‘Pat’ Earl Haskard and Ruth Mae (Miller) Haskard.

Judy was a 1960 graduate of Hutchinson High School.&nbsp; She graduated from Kansas State University with a Medical Technology degree in 1964.&nbsp; Judy worked as a bookkeeper for Apple Lane Animal Hospital, Hutchinson, alongside her husband, Dr. Gerald D. Schrater.&nbsp; She was a member of PEO, Tri-Delta Sorority, and Faith United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.&nbsp; Judy participated in the Stephen Ministry Program.

She was an avid traveler, enjoying the ‘Becoming An Outdoor Woman’ retreats, participating in archaeological digs, going on snow ski trips with the girls, and bowling.&nbsp; Judy raised multiple animals, including dogs and over hundreds of miniature Sicilian donkeys and showing many at the Kansas State Fair.

On June 6, 1964, she married Dr. Gerald Dean Schrater, in Hutchinson.&nbsp; They shared over 51 years of marriage, prior to his death on December 27, 2015.

Judy is survived by: her son, Cory (Suzie) Schrater and their children, Patrick, Courtney, and Parker, all of Valley Center; and daughter, Lana Craig and her sons, Callum and Daniel, all of Portland, OR.

She was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her parents; husband; sister, Patricia Holmstrom; and son-in-law, Cameron Craig.

Lila Ann Toland, 72, of Hutchinson, died October 8, 2022, at Hospice House.&nbsp; She was born May 16, 1950, in Menard, Texas, to Victor and Nancy (Garcia) Salas.

Lila attended Hutchinson High School. She then became a housewife, dedicating her life to her family.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Lila was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She enjoyed being an artist, making jewelry and leather crafts, but she mostly enjoyed picking on her husband.

On May 12, 1973, she married the love of her life, Loren Ray Toland. They shared almost 50 years of marriage. He survives.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Jovita Christine Toland.

Cremation has taken place. Per Lila’s wishes, there will be no viewing. A private family inurnment will take place at Eastside Cemetery with her brother, Manny Salas officiating.

enjoyed the Kansas City Chief’s, fishing, and his grandkids. He was a CNC
machinist for Eaton and had worked in the oil field. 

Survivors include his daughter, Stacy and husband Jason
Sisler, Hutchinson; grandchildren, Briana Vincent and significant other, Adam
Pettay and Davonte Neely, Hutchinson; sisters, Janet Ediger, Burrton and Connie
Wright, Lawrence; and his best friend, Barbara Keene, Hutchinson. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Thomas
and John Vincent; and a sister, Judy Vincent.

Yvonne Dorothy “Bonnie” (Boseck) Krehbiel died September 25, 2022, in Hutchinson, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born November&nbsp;16, 1919, to Christian Rudolph and Martha Emma (Hampel) Boseck on her parents’ farm in Bear Grove Township, Cass County, Iowa.&nbsp;

Bonnie graduated from Atlantic High School, Atlantic, Iowa, in 1937.&nbsp; On April&nbsp;4, 1944, Bonnie married Robert Donald “Rob” Krehbiel in Yakima, Washington.&nbsp; Rob died October&nbsp;15, 2010, in Hutchinson.

Bonnie is survived by four children: Kathrine (Charles) Moll, Hutchinson; Thomas (Diane) Krehbiel, Tempe, Arizona; Susan (Larry) William, Topeka; and Martha (Jay) Bogart, Springhill; five grandchildren, Rob Lyman, Peter (Jamie) Krehbiel, Kathrine Bogart (Jacob) Frese, Lindsay Krehbiel, and James Krehbiel; and two great-grandchildren, Jack Krehbiel and Genevieve Frese.&nbsp;

Bonnie was predeceased by her parents; two brothers: Maurice and Ross Boseck; and seven sisters: Loine (Marvin) Russell, Fern (Bruno) Behrends, Faye (Arnold) Ihnen, Zoe (Henry) Kay, Evelyn (John) Brown, Jean Boseck, and Joanne Moll.

Yvonne Dorothy “Bonnie” (Boseck) Krehbiel died September 25, 2022, in Hutchinson, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born November&nbsp;16, 1919, to Christian Rudolph and Martha Emma (Hampel) Boseck on her parents’ farm in Bear Grove Township, Cass County, Iowa.&nbsp;Bonnie graduated from Atlantic High School, Atlantic, Iowa, in 1937.&nbsp; On April&nbsp;4, 1944, Bonnie married Robert Donald “Rob” Krehbiel in Yakima, Washington.&nbsp; Rob died October&nbsp;15, 2010, in Hutchinson.Bonnie is survived by four children: Kathrine (Charles) Moll, Hutchinson; Thomas (Diane) Krehbiel, Tempe, Arizona; Susan (Larry) William, Topeka; and Martha (Jay) Bogart, Springhill; five grandchildren, Rob Lyman, Peter (Jamie) Krehbiel, Kathrine Bogart (Jacob) Frese, Lindsay Krehbiel, and James Krehbiel; and two great-grandchildren, Jack Krehbiel and Genevieve Frese.&nbsp;Bonnie was predeceased by her parents; two brothers: Maurice and Ross Boseck; and seven sisters: Loine (Marvin) Russell, Fern (Bruno) Behrends, Faye (Arnold) Ihnen, Zoe (Henry) Kay, Evelyn (John) Brown, Jean Boseck, and Joanne Moll.Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 5, 2022, Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Craig Waetke officiating.&nbsp; Private inurnment will be in Halstead Cemetery, Halstead.&nbsp; Friends may sign her book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.<a href="https://view.oneroomstreaming.com/authorise.php?k=1664581274211111">Click here to view Bonnie's Memorial Service</a>

William Henry Winter, age 82 died October 7, 2022 in Newton Kansas, one month after his beloved wife Margaret.

William (Bill) was born in Wichita, to Roy and Alice Winter. As a child Bill was often with family helping his family with chores. He could be found tending the garden, doing yard work, sometimes at work with his father, and helping his Aunt Lettie grade school work. Bill was a middle child with an older sister Pearl and a younger sister Carol.

In High School he was involved in the Hi-Y club, a YMCA branch where he enjoyed softball and basketball. He played the euphonium in the band and took part in singing groups. Bill also enjoyed participating in theater and was active in the local Brethren Youth Group. During district Brethren Youth retreats and conferences he met Margaret Lehman from western Kansas. As seniors they took a youth bus trip to New York and Washington DC, spending much time together. Their relationship continued while attending McPherson College, leading to marriage during their senior year.

Bill graduated with a teaching degree and immediately began teaching science, which he continued until his retirement. He and Margaret began a family in 1962 and were avidly involved in all parts of raising two sons. Bill was always committed and close to his family, including watching over and taking care of his aunts, uncle and mother. Bill’s values were visible in the way he lived. He believed in working hard, getting things done, doing tasks right, sharing generously and serving others. Bill also loved being outdoors, hiking, fishing, camping and of course rockhounding during his travels with family.

Nearing his retirement from Wichita Public Schools he purchased a farm in Sumner County. Bill was an active member and volunteer with the Church of the Brethren, including helping rebuild homes after disasters and being part of disaster childcare teams. He modeled his beliefs and interests, his sons learned and adopted many of these characteristics. He was known to say that he was born in the wrong century, enjoying a wood fire, slower pace and lots of time outdoors working the land. His son Perry and wife Juli, son Roy and wife Lisa, grandsons Jesse, Brady, Dilan and granddaughter Sadie, sibling Pearl and many extended family members will continue to feel the loss of all Bill represented.

He is preceded in death by his father Roy R Winter, mother Alice Garnett Winter and sister Carol.

A Celebration of Life gathering for the family is being planned for a later time.&nbsp;

Frieda Mae Quiring, 84, died on October 7, 2022, at her home in Newton.

She was born on December 28, 1937, in Goessel, the daughter of Cornelius (Curt) and Kathrine (Flaming) Janzen.

On June 15, 1957, Frieda was united in marriage to Don Quiring in Newton. The couple celebrated their 65th&nbsp;wedding anniversary this year.

Frieda worked various jobs throughout her working life including bank teller, clerk at Druber’s Donut Shop, and finally retiring following several years as a lab tech at Bethel Deaconess Hospital.

Frieda was a devoted member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Newton and made sure that her family faithfully attended and was active in the church as long as they lived in the home. &nbsp;She, along with her husband, volunteered in the kitchen for many years.

In her early years of marriage, Frieda enjoyed spending time with her mother and late sister-in-law, Obera Janzen, playing Scrabble and having Faspa (low-German Mennonite term for typical late afternoon lunch usually consisting of bologna, cheese and zweibach). Much of that time was spent in conversation freely flowing in and out of German and English – often in mid-sentence. &nbsp; She provided for her family by canning the produce from the bountiful family garden.&nbsp; Much of what the family ate in the winter months was grown and harvested by the family earlier that year.&nbsp; She enjoyed Pepsi and chocolate breaks with her daughter, Joni, whenever they could find the opportunity.&nbsp; She loved and appreciated her nightly phone conversations with her daughter, Kathy.&nbsp; While she was still able to travel, she greatly enjoyed trips to Columbia, MO, to spend time with her daughter Redonda and her family and to see the beautiful scenery of central Missouri.&nbsp; Throughout her married life, Frieda loved “junking” at estate and garage sales with her best friend, Linda, even as her health began to decline.

Frieda was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be deeply missed by her husband, Don Quiring; children, Katherine Rose (Sid) Brown, Redonda (Mike) Marshall, Irene (Kevin) Lehrman, Don (Jacki) Quiring, and Joan Marie (Bill) Burns; 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Arlo (Hazel) Janzen; and her best friend for over 50 years, Linda Eschelman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Curt and Katherine Janzen; brother, Clarence Janzen; and sister, Lillian Carmen.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 15, 2022, at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with Kerry Rosfeld officiating.&nbsp; Visitation will be at Peterson Funeral Home from 5:00-9:00 on Friday, October 14, 2022, with the family present from 6:00-7:30.

Marvin Ray Estabrook, 77, of Sterling, passed away October 5, 2022, at his home. He was born April 5, 1945, in Sterling, the son of John L. and Hazel D. Cruth Estabrook. 

Marvin was a longtime Rice County resident, graduating from Sterling High School with the class of 1964. Marvin retired from Lyons Salt Company in 2016 after working for the company for 40 years. In his early years, he worked for Snodderley Lumber Company in Clearmont, Missouri and Eaton Transmission Department in Shanendoah, IA. 

He served in the United States Army as a military police officer, finishing basic training at Fort Leonard Wood in 1965 before serving in Vietnam, after which he was honorably discharged at West Point, NY in 1968. Serving in the Hutchinson Army National Guard, as well as attending Calvary Baptist Church in Sterling. He was a member of the Sterling American Legion Post #128 and Lyons VFW. 

Marvin enjoyed watching sports, playing softball, basketball and co-ed volleyball, and most of all spending time with his family. On November 22, 1969, Marvin was united in marriage with Cheryl Kelley in Clearmont, Missouri. 

Cheryl resides at home. He is also survived by daughter, Andrea Higgins and husband Jake of Lyons; his son, Steven Estabrook and wife Aubrey of Clarksville, TN; two grandchildren, Kai and Adeline Estabrook; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Marvin is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Virgil Estabrook; and sister, Darlene Young. 

Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M., Friday, October 14, 2022, at the Sterling Community Cemetery, with Pastor Dale Jordan officiating. Military honors by Ft. Riley Honor Guard and the Sterling American Legion Post #128.  Lunch will be served at Calvary Baptist Church after services.&nbsp;

Neoma Epp passed away peacefully on October 8, 2022 at age 98 , at Prairie Sunset Home, surrounded by family.&nbsp; She was a life long resident of the Pretty Prairie community.&nbsp; Throughout her 4 years of residence at Prairie Sunset she continued her positive, gracious approach to life and built loving friendships with residents and staff.

Neoma was born February 7, 1924 in Hutchinson, to Fred H. and Ella Graber Krehbiel.&nbsp; She was the oldest of 5 children being big sister to Doris, Veda, Leland "Tony", and Reta.&nbsp; She attended Savage Grade School through 8th grade and graduated from Pretty Prairie High School in 1942.&nbsp; She attended Bethel College for one year, then worked in Wichita for the Revenue Office.&nbsp; She also worked at the local bank for several years before and after marriage.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On June 1, 1947 Neoma and Albert F. Epp were united in Holy Marriage and this union was blessed with two sons, Ed and Larry.

Neoma considered her role as a homemaker to be a calling.&nbsp; Her skill and graciousness made homemaking an art form, one in which she excelled.&nbsp; Through the years she contributed to the community and church in many ways including 4-H leader, den mother, van driver for Prairie Sunset Home, 50 year member of FCE, charter member of Vesper Society, and many others.&nbsp; She actively supported the MCC Relief Sale and through the years made hundreds of poppy seed rolls, noodles, angel food cakes, and pies for the effort, and also embroidered countless sets of tea towels and baby quilts.&nbsp; Neoma had an entrepreneurial spirit with selling Stanley Home Products for many years and also baking and selling hundreds of pies which were highly sought after in the community.&nbsp; She was a life long member of her beloved First Mennonite Church.&nbsp; In everything Neoma did, she extended graciousness, kindness, and hospitality.&nbsp; She was creative and ingenious which also enabled a great sense of humor and wit.

Predeceasing Neoma were husband Albert, parents Fred and Ella, brother Tony, and sisters Doris and Veda.

Surviving to honor her memory are 2 sons Ed (Sherry), Independence; Larry (Monica), Pretty Prairie; 4 grandchildren Leslie (Justin) Gordon, Topeka; Nathan (Cynthia) Warrensburg, MO; Tyler (Leslie) Pretty Prairie; and Justin (Liz) Topeka, and 8 great grandchildren; and a sister Reta Krehbiel, Pretty Prairie.

Celebration of Life services will be held Thursday, October 13, 10:30 a.m. at First Mennonite Church, Pretty Prairie.&nbsp; Visitation will be Wednesday, October 12 at Livingston Funeral Home, Kingman with family present 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Darwin Ray Francis, 86, Attica, Farmer/Stockman, Agribusiness Leader and Cooperative System Activist passed away peacefully on October 8, surrounded by his family. Darwin was born in the Galloway Hospital in Anthony, to Ray &amp; Evelyn Francis June 8, 1936.&nbsp; According to notes written by Evelyn&nbsp; in his baby book, he was very strong, and could crawl by 5 months and was walking at 10 months.

That early strength seemed to set the stage for the rest of his life.&nbsp; He rented his first 160 acres of wheat and began farming on his own at age 17. Darwin attended Harper County Schools and graduated from Harper High School in 1955. He was involved in 4-H and FFA through high school.

He attended Kansas State University &amp; received a degree in Animal Husbandry in 1958. While attending KSU, he worked for the KSU Beef Barns, was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, ARMY ROTC, the KSU Meats Judging Team and Collegiate 4-H.&nbsp; While serving on the Barn Dance Committee his senior year, he met a sassy red head named Patricia Todd from Altamont, Kansas &amp; they began dating.&nbsp; Several months later, Darwin proposed &amp; told Pat she could either have an engagement ring, or him….she chose Darwin &amp; they were married October 25, 1958 in Altamont, Kansas.

After their marriage, Darwin &amp; Pat were stationed in El Paso, Texas where Darwin completed his military service. Two years later, the couple returned to Harper County where that original quarter of land beckoned &amp; they began farming. Over the next few years, the farm and their family grew, when in 1961 they welcomed a daughter, Carol and in 1962, a son Jon joined their family.&nbsp; The family of 4…plus many young “hired hands” from the Attica &amp; Harper communities, worked together and built a cattle and wheat farming operation just outside of Attica, Kansas that successfully provided a living for their family for the next 60 years.

Darwin’s work ethic and desire to elevate the voice of the wheat producer in local and regional cooperative systems was a key motivator behind his life-long advocacy focused on sustaining the farmer’s voice in a strong Cooperative System. In addition to being named Star Young Farmer of Kansas at age 30 in 1966, He was one of the youngest Board members elected to the Anthony Co-op board of directors by his election that same year. He continued this local leadership for several decades. In 1974 he was elected by his peers to serve as District 6 board member to the Union Equity Cooperative Exchange based in Enid, Oklahoma.&nbsp; He went on to serve as Vice President in 1983 and President in 1984..

Darwin served as a founding advisory council member of the Arthur Capper Cooperative Center located at KSU in Manhattan, Kansas. He was especially proud of securing a key donation in 1984 which served as a foundation in launching the center. The Arthur Capper Cooperative Center (ACCC) is a public-private partnership between the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ageconomics.k-state.edu/">Department of Agricultural Economics</a>&nbsp;at Kansas State University and the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansasco-op.coop/">Kansas Cooperative Council</a>.

Darwin took pride in his stewardship of the land as a custom farmer and building strong relationships with multiple generations of land owners.&nbsp; “It was always an honor to look at the fields with Darwin Francis,” said Karen E Robinson when learning of Darwin’s passing recently. “Goodbye to someone who taught me most of what little I know about farming.&nbsp; I think that includes the attitudes of farming: very practical, with a perspective to how things had changed &amp; still might (do you know how the yield on corn has changed!?), and a clear view of what you can change / can’t change / might be able to change if only it would rain.”

Darwin was predeceased by his parents Ray and Evelyn and his brother Marlan. Darwin is survived by his wife Pat, daughter Carol Bush (Don Schilling) Wichita, son Jon Francis (Tammy), Kingman, his sister Joyce Waggoner, Tribune and brother Gene Francis (Connie) of Wichita.

His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a great source of pride. He loved learning of their exploits, hosting them for “Life Lessons” at the farm, traveling with them to KSU Bowl Games and spent many hours traveling across Kingman and Pratt County to ball games, tennis matches, concerts and ‘showing up’ for them in acts of service which showed them he cared.&nbsp;

Grandchildren include:&nbsp; Anne Marie Bush, Kingman; Justin Bush (Katie), Wichita; Emily Bush, Newton;&nbsp; Kayla Fobes, Kingman and Jagger Francis, Kingman.&nbsp; Great-grandchildren include Felicity, Malakhi, Carter, Ferris and Elliotte.&nbsp;

Relationships and good times spent with friends and family are what mattered most to Darwin in his life. To honor his wishes to “host a party &amp; have a good time. Tell stories and jokes.” 

Darwin’s family will host a Celebration of Life in his honor October 29 from 1-3pm at the Kingman Activity Center in Kingman.&nbsp; All are welcome to attend and celebrate Darwin’s life of leadership, laughter and love.

Darwin was born in the Galloway Hospital in Anthony, to Ray &amp; Evelyn Francis June 8, 1936.&nbsp; According to notes written by Evelyn&nbsp; in his baby book, he was very strong, and could crawl by 5 months and was walking at 10 months.That early strength seemed to set the stage for the rest of his life.&nbsp; He rented his first 160 acres of wheat and began farming on his own at age 17. Darwin attended Harper County Schools and graduated from Harper High School in 1955. He was involved in 4-H and FFA through high school.He attended Kansas State University &amp; received a degree in Animal Husbandry in 1958. While attending KSU, he worked for the KSU Beef Barns, was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, ARMY ROTC, the KSU Meats Judging Team and Collegiate 4-H.&nbsp; While serving on the Barn Dance Committee his senior year, he met a sassy red head named Patricia Todd from Altamont, Kansas &amp; they began dating.&nbsp; Several months later, Darwin proposed &amp; told Pat she could either have an engagement ring, or him….she chose Darwin &amp; they were married October 25, 1958 in Altamont, Kansas.After their marriage, Darwin &amp; Pat were stationed in El Paso, Texas where Darwin completed his military service. Two years later, the couple returned to Harper County where that original quarter of land beckoned &amp; they began farming. Over the next few years, the farm and their family grew, when in 1961 they welcomed a daughter, Carol and in 1962, a son Jon joined their family.&nbsp; The family of 4…plus many young “hired hands” from the Attica &amp; Harper communities, worked together and built a cattle and wheat farming operation just outside of Attica, Kansas that successfully provided a living for their family for the next 60 years.Darwin’s work ethic and desire to elevate the voice of the wheat producer in local and regional cooperative systems was a key motivator behind his life-long advocacy focused on sustaining the farmer’s voice in a strong Cooperative System. In addition to being named Star Young Farmer of Kansas at age 30 in 1966, He was one of the youngest Board members elected to the Anthony Co-op board of directors by his election that same year. He continued this local leadership for several decades. In 1974 he was elected by his peers to serve as District 6 board member to the Union Equity Cooperative Exchange based in Enid, Oklahoma.&nbsp; He went on to serve as Vice President in 1983 and President in 1984..Darwin served as a founding advisory council member of the Arthur Capper Cooperative Center located at KSU in Manhattan, Kansas. He was especially proud of securing a key donation in 1984 which served as a foundation in launching the center. The Arthur Capper Cooperative Center (ACCC) is a public-private partnership between the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ageconomics.k-state.edu/">Department of Agricultural Economics</a>&nbsp;at Kansas State University and the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansasco-op.coop/">Kansas Cooperative Council</a>.Darwin took pride in his stewardship of the land as a custom farmer and building strong relationships with multiple generations of land owners.&nbsp; “It was always an honor to look at the fields with Darwin Francis,” said Karen E Robinson when learning of Darwin’s passing recently. “Goodbye to someone who taught me most of what little I know about farming.&nbsp; I think that includes the attitudes of farming: very practical, with a perspective to how things had changed &amp; still might (do you know how the yield on corn has changed!?), and a clear view of what you can change / can’t change / might be able to change if only it would rain.”Darwin was predeceased by his parents Ray and Evelyn and his brother Marlan. Darwin is survived by his wife Pat, daughter Carol Bush (Don Schilling) Wichita, son Jon Francis (Tammy), Kingman, his sister Joyce Waggoner, Tribune and brother Gene Francis (Connie) of Wichita.His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a great source of pride. He loved learning of their exploits, hosting them for “Life Lessons” at the farm, traveling with them to KSU Bowl Games and spent many hours traveling across Kingman and Pratt County to ball games, tennis matches, concerts and ‘showing up’ for them in acts of service which showed them he cared.&nbsp;Grandchildren include:&nbsp; Anne Marie Bush, Kingman; Justin Bush (Katie), Wichita; Emily Bush, Newton;&nbsp; Kayla Fobes, Kingman and Jagger Francis, Kingman.&nbsp; Great-grandchildren include Felicity, Malakhi, Carter, Ferris and Elliotte.&nbsp;Relationships and good times spent with friends and family are what mattered most to Darwin in his life. To honor his wishes to “host a party &amp; have a good time. Tell stories and jokes.” Darwin’s family will host a Celebration of Life in his honor October 29 from 1-3pm at the Kingman Activity Center in Kingman.&nbsp; All are welcome to attend and celebrate Darwin’s life of leadership, laughter and love.

Louise Stuckey, 86, of Hutchinson, died October 6, 2022, peacefully at Wesley Towers. She was born August 27, 1936, in Hutchinson to Matthew and Ruth (Albright) Cain.

Louise graduated from Reno County High School (later Nickerson), in 1954. She was a caring homemaker while her children were growing up. After her children left home, she enjoyed selling furniture at a local furniture store. Music meant a lot to Louise; she displayed this by being an organist at church and with Hutchinson Broncs. She taught Sunday school and was a lifetime member of Nickerson United Methodist Church. Louise was also a member of the Nickerson Order of Eastern Star. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and sewing.

On November 14, 1954, she married J.B. Stuckey. They shared 61 years of marriage before his passing on May 30, 2015.

Louise is survived by: daughter, Debbie Binns (Greg), Hutchinson; son, David Stuckey (Jennifer), Abilene, TX; grandchildren, Kyle Binns (Roxanne), Brad Binns (Holly), Haley Stuckey, Jayton Stuckey; great-grandchildren, Caroline, Merrick, Abigail, Jack; sister, JoAnn Laughlin, Wichita; and close friend, Harold Henry, Hutchinson.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, J.B.; and sister, Joyce Sattler.

Gregg Matthew Bohren, 51, formerly of Hutchinson, died&nbsp;October 5, 2022,&nbsp;surrounded by his&nbsp;family after a series of medical complications, at Blount Memorial Hospital, Maryville, TN. &nbsp;He was born November 10, 1970, in Omaha, NE, to Delmar Fredrick and Janet Ann (Webster) Bohren.

Gregg graduated from Pilgrim Christian High School, Hutchinson,&nbsp;received his bachelor’s degree from American Military University and was proudly working on his master’s degree from Liberty University. Gregg served in the United States Army and the United States Army Reserves, and was discharged with the rank of First Lieutenant. &nbsp;He&nbsp;was currently working&nbsp;for Accenture&nbsp;as an Operational Account Lead&nbsp;and looking forward to moving back to Kansas. &nbsp;Gregg&nbsp;loved anything sports-related from the Nebraska Cornhusker football team to KU basketball, to the Kansas City Royals. &nbsp;Gregg was a life-long learner, and loved his family deeply.&nbsp;

On April 23, 2005, he married Carrie Reust, in Salt Lake City, UT. &nbsp;They shared 17 years of marriage.

Gregg is survived by: &nbsp;his wife, Carrie of Lenexa; daughters, Mackenzie Carlson (Andrew) of Hutchinson and Elizabeth “Lizzy” Bohren of Lenexa, as well as his son, Sullivan Bohren of Kansas City; his mother, Janet Bohren of Hutchinson; sisters, Kristine Goertzen (Rick) of Hoover, Alabama and Kathryn Rich (Scott) of Hutchinson; five&nbsp;beautiful and precious granddaughters, Willow, Adelaide, Clementine, Violetta, and Evangeline; in-laws, Carolyn and Dwight&nbsp;Reust&nbsp;of Council Grove, KS; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless friends and coworkers.&nbsp;

David’s life began on February 16, 1951, in Strong City. He is the son of David Henry and Zetta Loretta (Hall) Ramsey. 

David graduated from Strong City High School in 1969 and continued his education at Flint Hills Technical School in Emporia. After Flint Hills, David went onto Emporia State University where he eventually earned his Master’s Degree in Education. He also participated in ROTC at Kansas State. He taught Industrial Arts at several area schools including Cottonwood Falls, Great Bend, Andover, White City, Pleasanton, and Valley Falls.

He was united in marriage to Ardith Jacobs on November 22, 1969, at the Methodist Church in Cottonwood Falls. In addition to teaching, David was a rancher and cattleman. He loved his cattle and his horses that he treated like his pets. David served as an EMT on the Chase County ambulance. He was an active Mason, first in the Zeredatha Lodge # 80 in Cotton Wood Falls and then in the Advance Lodge #114 in Florence. He was a lifetime member of the Grand Lodge of Kansas and served as a delegate.

David is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ardith of Elmdale; children John David Ramsey of Elmdale, Christina Marie (Jim) Mies of Valley Center, and Kyle Lee (Jennifer) Ramsey of Valley Center; grandchildren Danielle Powell, Brandon Powell, Katherina Ramsey, and Nicholas Ramsey; great grandchildren Aubrielle Mies and Landon Mies; his sister Loretta Hamilton of Omaha and nephew Gary Hamilton.

David passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday October 8, 2022. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Bobby “Bob” Ray Parker, 83, of McPherson, KS and formerly of Phillipsburg, KS, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, October 7, 2022.&nbsp; He was born in Speed, KS on November 10, 1938, to Harley Eads Parker and Cora Mae (Thornton) Parker.&nbsp; Bob attended Speed Grade School through 8th&nbsp;grade but traveled to nearby Phillipsburg to attend Phillipsburg High School, graduating in 1956.&nbsp; Soon after graduation, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in San Diego serving aboard the USS Lowe.

Bob often commented that he had worked all his life, and this consistent work history did define much of his life.&nbsp; When he was a high school student, he worked for the D.G. Hansen Construction Company out of Logan, KS.&nbsp; Then, after his years of service in the Navy, Bob returned home to Phillipsburg and soon began a 42-year career with Farmland offices in Phillipsburg, Waco, TX, Amarillo, TX, and finally, in McPherson where he retired in 2003.&nbsp; During this time with Farmland in McPherson, Bob and Cindy provided a cleaning service for the offices there.&nbsp; At the same time, Bob owned and operated several contract mail routes in the Central Kansas area.&nbsp;

Following his retirement from Farmland, Bob worked for a time at Walmart, when Walmart was hiring people to help with setting up the new Super Walmart.&nbsp; Bob also drove a newspaper delivery truck for the McPherson Sentinel when the Sentinel was still printing newspapers for area towns.&nbsp; He continued to work until declining health conditions finally forced him to retire from all work.&nbsp; He was then able to spend more time with his family, especially the grandchildren.&nbsp; He and Cindy took them on outings and attended many athletic events and activities.&nbsp; Bob enjoyed casino trips with his buddies, and loved cheering for the Jayhawks and Bullpups.

Bob is survived by his loving wife Cindy; two daughters: Loujena Cardenas and Kim Shields; two sons: Brad Parker and Brandon (Tiffany) Parker; grandchildren: Lacie Shields, Clayton (Sheena) Herrick, Trista (Jason) McGuire, Derek Shields, Tia (Josh) Goscha, Brittany (Allen) Haas, Cruise Parker, Cole Parker, and Mack Parker; thirteen great-grandchildren; three nephews and six nieces; brother-in-law Rev. Tim (Marcia) Pool; and sister-in-law Shelley Shirley.

Preceding Bob in death were his parents; his in-laws Dallas Pool and Esther Pool; his beloved sister Loretta and her husband Don Andrews; two sons-in-law Jim Shields and Leroy Cardenas; and brother-in-law Michael Clemens.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, October 24, 2022, at the Fairview Cemetery (Phillipsburg, KS) with Rev. Hope - Ophelia K. Jacobson, 90, passed away October 6, 2022 at Brook Dale Nursing Home in Wichita. 

 She was born November 27, 1931 rural Tampa to William and Lydia (Galliart) Rhode.  She married Don Jacobson August 6, 1950 in Tampa at the Mennonite Brethren Church. 

 Survivors include: daughter, Wanda (John) Lewis of Andover; grandchildren, Paul Lewis, Sarah Lewis Winterscheidt, Luke Lewis; sister, Edna Backhus of Tampa. 

 Predeceased by: husband, Don Jacobson 2013; son, Greg Jacobson 2022; sister, Phyllis Mueller.  Celebration of Life 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 14, 2022 at the Durham Baptist Church Officiated by Pastor Jose Cruz.

Bernice Helen Schletzbaum (Heidebrecht) was born on April 4, 1928 to Pete and Helen (Doerksen) Heidebrecht at Lake Inman. Bernice lived in McPherson county all her life and graduated from McPherson high school in 1946. 

On October 17, 1959 she married Arnold L. Schletzbaum at the McPherson Church of the Brethren. Bernice and Arnold attended Monitor Church of the Brethren in Conway, for many years. Arnold passed away on August 2, 2008. Bernice worked as an underwriting assistant at Farmer’s Alliance Insurance company for 44 years. Bernice and Arnold also farmed in McPherson county. She was a member of the Kansas Society of Insurance Women, National Association of Insurance Women, and a charter member of the Insurance Women of North Central Kansas. Bernice enjoyed reading, crocheting, embroidery, and making quilts for each of her siblings. 

Bernice was proceeded in death by her husband Arnold, parents Pete and Helen, sisters Tillie Koehn and Sophie Neufeld, and nephew Curtis Crumpacker. Bernice is survived by her sisters Kate Redger and Shirley Dornberger, brother Pete Heidebrecht, and several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Glidden-Ediger-Wiggins Funeral Home, McPherson. 

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 11 from 6:00-7:00 pm at Glidden-Ediger funeral home, McPherson. Graveside services will be Wednesday, October 12 at 10:00 am at North Inman Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11:00 at Glidden-Ediger, McPherson.&nbsp;

On Thursday October 6, 2022, Karen Melita Kliewer of rural Canton, a beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away. She was 72 years old.

She was born to Jack and Lila (Dodge) Hatfield in Kingman, on September 19, 1950. After graduating from Kingman High School she attended Salt City Business College in Hutchinson, majoring in business administration. There she met Don Kliewer of Canton. The two were married in Canton on October 24, 1969. The couple was blessed with two sons, Danny and Jack. As the boys grew up, all of the neighborhood boys simply called her "Mom". Karen enjoyed cheering on her boys during football games; she was always their biggest fan and loudest supporter in the stands. She was employed by the McPherson County Farm Service Agency for 15 years and the Hillsboro Co-op for 10 years. Karen was a member of the Canton Community Church.

Survivors include her husband Don of the home; her two sons, Danny of Wichita, and Jack and his wife Sandy of Moundridge; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild and a host of other relatives and friends. A brother, Harlan Hatfield preceded her in death.

Barbara Pearle Sheldon, 77, died October 7, 2022, at her home.&nbsp; She was born on June 13, 1945, in Wellington, KS, the daughter of Gilbert and Idotha (Patton) Cottle. Barbara grew up on a dairy farm near South Haven and graduated from South Haven High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Southwestern College in Winfield. While there, Barbara met Tom Sheldon, and they were married the day after her graduation, June 5, 1967. They shared 55 years of marriage.

Barbara earned a Master of Religious Education degree from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in 1969. She served as Director of Christian Education and Youth Ministry at the Valley Center United Methodist Church for two years. In 1971, Barbara and Tom moved to Oxford where they lived 4 years, and added two daughters to the family.

In 1975, the Sheldon family moved to Syracuse where Tom was appointed to serve. While there, Barbara served as the church Pre-School Director for 5 years. In 1980, the family moved to Kechi and Barbara served as the Director of Christian Education and Youth Ministry at University United Methodist Church in Wichita for 5 years.

In 1985, the family moved to Newton and Barbara began serving as an Associate Council Director for the Kansas West Conference.&nbsp; She served on the Conference Staff in various roles, including 4 years as Coordinator of Nurture, Outreach and Witness.&nbsp; While serving on the Conference Staff, she resourced hundreds of local churches with Christian education training events, visioning and goal setting, program planning, leadership development, staff team building, and consulting regarding matters ranging from personnel to building design.&nbsp; This ministry involved much travel over the western two-thirds of Kansas.

In 2004, Barbara served as the Interim Executive Director of Grace Med Health Clinic. She helped in selecting the new director, which turned out to be an excellent choice.&nbsp; Barbara also served as a Diaconal Minister, and then as a Deacon in the United Methodist Church.&nbsp; The family served at the South Hutchinson United Methodist Church for 6 years, Mulvane church for 10 years and Great Bend for 3 more years.&nbsp; Barbara retired in 2012, making Hutchinson her and Tom’s home.

Barbara is survived by: her husband, Tom of the home; daughters, Lori Sheldon of Haviland and Robin Reed and husband Joe of Albuquerque, NM; grandsons, Matthew Schrag, Ethan Reed, and Quinn Reed; brother, John Cottle and wife, Janice of Enid, OK; sister, Joan Orr of Sedan; foster brother, Richard Geier and wife Donna of Rose Hill; son-in-law, Steve Schrag; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and her many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Marsha Cottle.

Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 14, 2022, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Main, Hutchinson. Inurnment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Rome, KS (which is south of Wellington). Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp;

Ralph John Espinoza, 73, of Wichita, died October 6, 2022, at his home. He was born November 30, 1948, in Hutchinson, to Fred and Mary (Botello) Espinoza.

Ralph graduated from Hutchinson High School and attended KU. He served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1969. Ralph was a paint and body by trade up until he retired. In his younger years Ralph was a DJ and had a radio broadcasting license. He loved movies and music. Ralph was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wichita.

On July 27, 1970, he married Victoria Vieyra. They later divorced and she died May 29, 2002. On November 30, 1985, Ralph married Geralyn E. Duarte. She survives.

Also surviving are: his children, Ricco (Nikki) Espinoza of Oak Point, TX, Mario (Angelica) Espinoza of Kyle, TX, Gino (Lacy) Espinoza of Kyle, TX; Shawna Stroupe of Phoenix, AZ; Jessica Espinoza, of Parkville, MO, Alexandra (Ethan) Williams of Wichita; sister, Rose (Larry) McElderry of Wichita; brother, Michael Espinoza of Wichita; grandchildren, Benjamin Dick, Marcos Coronado, Belicia Espinoza, Asia Logsdon, Siera Logsdon, Noah Stroupe, Liam Stroupe, Xavier Maafala, David Torres, Dan Torres, Sofia Espinoza, Aya Williams; great-grandchildren, Jett, Ike, Victoria Rose; and many extended family members.

Lincolnville - Phillip G. Smith, 73, passed away October 7, 2022 at Newton Medical Center in Newton. 

 He was born July 26, 1949 in Hillsboro to Percy and Lorene (Symes) Smith.  He married Janet Werner July 3, 1971 in Sisseton, South Dakota.  She passed away in 2016.  He married Melissa Wood July 14, 2018 at the Marion Reservoir.  Survivors include: wife, Melissa Smith of Rural Lincolnville; sons, Mark (Lori) Smith of Rural Lincolnville, Jesse (Ashton) Smith of Pilsen; daughters, Amy (Brad) Pagenkopf of Lost Springs, Samatha Wood of Rural Lincolnville; 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Velma May Trinkle, 100, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at Parkwood Village. She was born on September 29, 1922 in Preston to Henry W. and Ida (Scheele) Briggeman. Velma married Merle John Trinkle on May 15, 1948 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Natrona. He preceded her in death on March 8, 2011. Velma graduated from Preston High School and had gone on to attend Pratt Junior College. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was confirmed in March of 1935 and Bethany Guild. Velma was a retired Sears Employee and homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, baking, being outside mowing and tending to her garden. She is survived by her son, Morgan (Deb) Trinkle of Preston; grandchildren, Angela Trinkle of Gainesville, Texas and Sheila (Steve) Lunsford of Preston; and great-grandsons, Tyler Jon Reimer of Preston and Dylan Merle Reimer of Pratt. Velma is preceded in death by her husband, Merle John Trinkle; parents; and sisters, Ilene Briggeman, Florene Briggeman and Ethel Leal.
