Patricia L. Sands, 85, of Hutchinson, passed away peacefully November 22, 2022, at Hospice House of Reno County after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born September 24, 1937, in Burdett, the daughter of Everett and Opal (Epley) Ruby.

A longtime resident of Hutchinson, Pattie graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1955. She was employed at various Hutchinson stores, including Peel’s Beauty Supply. Pattie was a long-time member of Hope Church (previously Believers Tabernacle and First Assembly of God) in Hutchinson and loved her church family.

Pattie married Douglas Sands on June 25, 1960. He died May 19, 2014.

She is survived by: her children, LaDena Sands Dosdall (Gerald) of Wichita, Michael Sands (Sharon) of Lorain, OH; grandchildren, Bethany Newell (Cliff), Lindsey Long (Grant), Elizabeth Henry (Matt), Wesley Dosdall (Caitlin); great-grandchildren, Gianna, Zevulun, Luke, Logan, Clayton; sister, Kay Bergen-Potts; niece, Barbara Bergen Whitmore; and nephew, Marc Bergen (Teri).

Pattie was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Steve, Joe, and Greg Ruby.

Celebration of Life service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at Hope Church, 1701 N. Main, Hutchinson, with Pastors Bobby Massey and Kendall Sheats officiating. Burial will follow in Eastside Cemetery.

Charles was born on May 30, 1955, in Newton. He is the first of six children born to Richard and Thelma “Jeep” (Tallman) Edris. Charles graduated from Remington High School as the class of 1973. He then went on to play football for Tabor College in Hillsboro. In 1977, Charles began working at Horizon Milling in Newton, and retired after 43 years of service to the flour mill.

In his free time, Charles enjoyed all things hunting and fishing, but most of all, he loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. Charles’ family includes his partner, Merce Pentz, Wichita; children: Tawnya (Josh) Malecki, Hutchinson; Travis Edris, Halstead; &nbsp;Tiffany (John) Wendling, Halstead; grandchildren: MacKenzie Malecki, Nicholas Malecki, Clay Malecki, Peyton Wendling, Jackson Wendling, Leo Wendling; mother: Jeep Edris, Whitewater; siblings: Harry Edris, Whitewater; &nbsp;Dennis Edris, Whitewater; Bruce (Nanette) Edris, Whitewater; Sue (Raymond) Archer, Whitewater; &nbsp;Tina Edris Macy, Goddard; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Charles, at the age of 67, passed away on November 20, 2022, at his home in Wichita, surrounded by his loving family. He is preceded in death by his father, Richard Edris; grandparents: Charles and Violet (Moore) Tallman; Charles and Emma (Brockway) Edris.

Ronald Herbel, 81, passed away November 13, 2022 at Hillsboro Community Hospital in Hillsboro.  He was born September 28, 1941 in Hillsboro to Henry and Lena (Klatt) Herbel. 

 He married Mary Jane Keller July 8, 1960 in Hillsboro.  Survivors include: sons, Rick (Dawn) Herbel of Newton, Randy Herbel of Norton; daughters, Diana (Tim) Howell of Hillsboro, Janet (Gary) Kade of Ford County, Judy Hollingshead of Ellis; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.  Predeceased by his wife, Mary Jane Herbel in 2016.

Cecil Ray Newman, 71, passed away Sunday, November 20, 2022 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 4, 1951 in Mooreland, Oklahoma to Carl and Lena (Perrin) Newman. Cecil married Kimberly Jean (Stone) Newman on May 21, 1972 in Medicine Lodge. They were married for 50 years. Cecil graduated from Mooreland High School in 1969. He joined the United States Army in March of 1971 and served until December of 1973. He began college at Northwestern Oklahoma State University and then transferred to Wichita State University where he graduated with his Bachelor in Accounting. He owned Cecil R. Newman Accounting Firm for 40 years until retiring in 2020. He was a member of The Lions Club and served on the Peace Treaty Board. He was a treasurer and Deacon at First Christian Church where he served on the board as well. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and playing cards every Wednesday evening. He is survived by his wife, Kim Newman; son, Michael (Sarah) Newman of Medicine Lodge; daughter, Georgia Ann (Chris) Miller of Lindsborg; and 8 grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. Samuel C. “Sam” Baier, 91, of Medicine Lodge, died Friday, November 18, 2022, at Beadles Nursing Home, Alva, OK. He was born on November 1, 1931, on the family farm 17 miles southwest of Medicine Lodge, the son of George Baier and Nancy Ellen (Crick) Baier. In 1955, he married Bonnie (Pullan) Baier in Kingman. She survives. Sam attended Elwood school from first through eighth grade, and then graduated from Medicine Lodge High School in 1949. He was an active member of FFA and was American Farmer in 1950 under the direction of Calvin Doyle. Following high school, Sam was drafted into the United States Marine Corps in 1951 and served until 1953. Following his service, he continued to work on the family farm with his dad, George. He married Bonnie (Pullan) in Kingman, in 1955. They went on to have four children, Jeffrey, Troy, Tavy, and Kristy. Sam had a deep love for farming and farm life.

In 1962, Sam was in a hay baler accident, where he lost his left arm. That didn’t stop the farm work from getting done. Area farmers rallied together with 32 tractors to ensure that his farm work was taken care of. Losing his arm didn’t stop him from farming, riding his horse, or rounding up cattle. Sam could do more with one arm than most men can do with two. Sam and Bonnie moved in town to Medicine Lodge in 1989, where Sam would drive to the farm every day to help with daily activities. Sam served on the Kansas Livestock Association for 50 years, the Barber County Cattlemen’s Association for 50 years, the Soil Conservation Board for 30 years, and the Farm Service Agency for 27 years. He attended Union Chapel Church before moving to Medicine Lodge, where then attended the United Methodist Church and then Community Bible Fellowship. Sam is preceded in death by his parents, Geroge and Ella, and two sisters, Beulah Adams and Marjoree Lukens. Surviving in addition to his wife, Bonnie Baier are four children, Jeffrey (Rose) Baier of Medicine Lodge, Troy (Verna) Baier of Cabot, AR, Tavy (Brad) McCracken of Alva, OK, and Kristy Tomson of Medicine Lodge; Sixteen grandchildren, Clint (Melissa) Baier, Kyla (Jarred) Hemphill, Todd (Sabrina) Freeman, Katy (Dakota) Wheeler, Maggie (Ben) Foster, Megan Ricke, Tatum (Mike) Stafford, Shane (Cody) Baier, Justin (Raychele) Baier, Angela (James) Seward, Alan White, Michele (Eric) Gunn, Amy (Brent) Brandon, Matthew (Katie) Tomson, Keegan (Alex Vieth) Lynch, &amp; Paige (Sean) Engler; And 28 Great-Grandchildren, one sister, Donna Garten of Medicine Lodge. Earl “Jay” Pinkerton, Newton, passed away November 20, 2022 at the age of 81.&nbsp; He was born October 26, 1941 in Kingman, to Earl Eugene Pinkerton and Pearl Wolfe Pinkerton.&nbsp; He lived in Kingman with his mother and older sisters Helen and Kay and younger sister Marcia until he started high school when they moved to Wichita.

He was a 1959 graduate of Wichita North High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Wichita State University.&nbsp; He spent the majority of his career working as a materials and processes engineer at Beech Aircraft and after retiring from there in 2001, went on to work as a contract engineer at Airbus and Spirit Aerosystems, retiring at the age of 72 in 2013.

He married his wife Robin in 1983 and they were blessed with 4 children, Jeffrey Pinkerton, Tamara Henderson and Christopher Pinkerton, from a previous marriage and Casey Zillner, Robin’s daughter from a previous marriage and adopted and raised by Jay; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He attended Westridge Community Church in Wichita until the Covid pandemic and then became an on-line attendee there as well as Westside Family Church in Lenexa.&nbsp; He and Robin were faithful attendees of a 20-year home Bible study which has created life-long friendships.

He will be missed and survived by his children Jeffrey (Lisa) Pinkerton of Rose Hill and their daughters, Chelsea Pinkerton of Austin, Texas &nbsp;and Josey Pinkerton of Rose Hill; Tamara (Damon) Henderson of League City, Texas and their children Taylor (Tatum) Henderson of Austin, Texas and Rylee (A.J.) Lauer of Garden Plain, and grandchildren Anderson and Aspen; Christopher (Stacy) Pinkerton of Derby, and their children Samuel (Faith) Pinkerton of Wichita, Oliver Pinkerton of Fort Collins, Colorado, &nbsp;Ethan Pinkerton of Manhattan, Kansas and Camille Pinkerton of Derby; and Casey (Joel) Zillner of Olathe, and their children Charlotte and Olivia. He is also survived by his sister Marcia as well as nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Helen and Kay.

Steven Joe Smith, 62, of McPherson, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2022, at his home.&nbsp; Steve was a supervisor at Johns Manville, McPherson and group leader at Excel Industries, Hesston.

Steve was born on January 30, 1960, in Salina, the son of Billy Joe Smith, Sr. and Shirley Rose (Regier) Smith.&nbsp; He graduated from McPherson High School in 1978.&nbsp; On September 12, 1981, Steve was united in marriage to Renee Lynn Mabes at the Canton United Methodist Church.&nbsp; This union was blessed with the birth of two children, Shane and Kelcie.&nbsp; Renee preceded Steve in death on December 16, 2021.

Survivors include: his children, Shane Smith of McPherson, and Kelcie (Domingo) Sanchez of Inman; father, Billy Joe Smith, Sr. of McPherson; sister, Dayna (Scott) Needham of McPherson; mother-in-law, Joan Christensen of McPherson; sisters-in-law, Jacque (Ronn) Rinker of McPherson, Rhonda (Chuck) Hamby of Canton, Michelle (Brantley) Unruh of Galva; and Angie Smith of McPherson; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Rose Smith; wife, Renee Smith; two brothers, Tracy Smith and Billy Smith, Jr.; father-in-law, Ronald Mabes; step-father-in-law, Marlin Christensen; and brother-in-law, Randy Mabes.

Steven Joe Smith, 62, of McPherson, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2022, at his home.&nbsp; Steve was a supervisor at Johns Manville, McPherson and group leader at Excel Industries, Hesston.Steve was born on January 30, 1960, in Salina, the son of Billy Joe Smith, Sr. and Shirley Rose (Regier) Smith.&nbsp; He graduated from McPherson High School in 1978.&nbsp; On September 12, 1981, Steve was united in marriage to Renee Lynn Mabes at the Canton United Methodist Church.&nbsp; This union was blessed with the birth of two children, Shane and Kelcie.&nbsp; Renee preceded Steve in death on December 16, 2021.Survivors include: his children, Shane Smith of McPherson, and Kelcie (Domingo) Sanchez of Inman; father, Billy Joe Smith, Sr. of McPherson; sister, Dayna (Scott) Needham of McPherson; mother-in-law, Joan Christensen of McPherson; sisters-in-law, Jacque (Ronn) Rinker of McPherson, Rhonda (Chuck) Hamby of Canton, Michelle (Brantley) Unruh of Galva; and Angie Smith of McPherson; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Rose Smith; wife, Renee Smith; two brothers, Tracy Smith and Billy Smith, Jr.; father-in-law, Ronald Mabes; step-father-in-law, Marlin Christensen; and brother-in-law, Randy Mabes.The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Sunday, November 27, 2022, at Stockham Family Funeral Home.&nbsp; The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, November 28, at Canton Community Church with Pastor Mike Miller officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow at McPherson Cemetery.

Georgianna “Georgi” Peterson, 77, of McPherson, KS, walked into heaven on Monday, November 21, 2022. Georgi retired from Johns Manville where she was an Employee Relations Manager.

Georgi was born on November 18, 1945, in McPherson, the daughter of Harry Harold and Alice Elfredia (Wedel) Krehbiel.&nbsp; She graduated from Moundridge High School in 1963 and attended McPherson College.&nbsp; On December 19, 1964, Georgi was united in marriage to Dwayne Richard “Pete” Peterson at the Eden Mennonite Church, Moundridge.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two daughters, Rhonda and Melinda.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Charles Earl Willis, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at the age of 97. He was born May 15, 1925, in Syracuse, to Charles Earl and Dora Elizabeth (Quillen) Willis. When Earl was four years old, the family moved to Garden City. He attended school there and graduated from Garden City High School in 1943. &nbsp;While in school, Earl worked with his father and uncle at Burtis Motor Company where he learned his trade as an auto mechanic.

After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and at the age of eighteen, he became the head of his company’s motor pool. Earl served in Italy and was honorably discharged in 1946. &nbsp;After returning home, Earl met Dorothy “Jane” Plummer on the dance floor of a wedding reception. They married on February 8, 1947, and were happily married for 70 years. Their home was in Syracuse, where Earl owned and operated Willis Auto. He was active in the community, first as a volunteer fireman and then serving twelve years as a Hamilton County Commissioner. He was a member of the Syracuse Masonic Lodge #309, Scottish Rite, and Shriners International.

Earl is survived by: three children, Chuck and his wife, Sharon, of Wadsworth, IL, Beth Butler and her husband, Mike, of Salina, and Janey Redetzke and her husband, Joe, of Buena Vista, CO; five grandchildren, Jennifer Carter, AJ Redetzke, Michele Johnson, Michael Butler, and Patrick Redetzke. He was also blessed with thirteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a sister, Dorothy Bush.

A private family graveside service will be held, Tuesday, November 29, at the Syracuse Cemetery where Earl will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Jane.

Dr. Gilford J. Ikenberry, Jr., 92, of McPherson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 22, 2022, surrounded by family at The Cedars, McPherson.

Gilford John Ikenberry, Jr. was born the day after Christmas 1929 in Fargo, North Dakota, where his father taught botany at North Dakota State University. The family of three moved frequently during the Great Depression, and young Gilford’s boyhood residences ranged from Columbus, Ohio, to Kansas, to Berkeley, California, to Portales, New Mexico. He began fourth grade in Stillwater, Oklahoma, graduating from Stillwater High School in 1948. Gilford’s father had some friends on the faculty at McPherson College, including R. E. Mohler and Joseph Bowman, and other relatives lived close to campus, so McPherson seemed a good option for Gilford, Jr.’s post-secondary schooling.

While Gilford made his career and reputation as a botanist, he did his undergraduate degree at McPherson College in mathematics. His interest in music extended back to his childhood, and during his college years he sang bass in A Cappella Choir and in male quartettes, representing the college on many deputations during his four years. During his freshman year, a young coed from Dallas Center, Iowa, captured Gilford’s attention, and he and Nelda Jeanine Baldner married in 1951, prior to their senior year. Their union bore three children—Susan, John, and Nick—and the joy and stimulation Gilford and Nelda received from one another’s companionship over 71 years of marriage is inspirational.

After college Gilford taught at McLouth, for two years. He began taking classes at Oklahoma State University and discovered that he shared his father’s passion for botany. He completed the M.S. in botany and plant pathology at OSU in 1956, moving to Iowa State University to pursue a doctoral degree, which he received in 1959. He accepted a position at Michigan State University where he continued research in plant pathology. In 1961, McPherson College’s president Dr. Bittinger convinced Gilford to accept a position at McPherson College.

When Dr. Ikenberry moved into his Harnly Hall office in the fall of 1961 and began setting up a greenhouse and labs, the most respected, celebrated faculty team in the history of McPherson College was complete. For the next 25 years, Dr. Ikenberry teamed with Dr. John Burkholder and Dr. Wesley DeCoursey to produce class after class of outstanding science graduates, more than 250 in all, who went on to become successful researchers, physicians, surgeons, dentists, veterinarians, teachers, and academics.

Gilford was always characteristically modest about his part in the remarkable success of his students, dismissing the notion that he shared responsibility for their achievement. The role of the teacher, he said, “is simply to provide a stimulating environment so that learning may happen.” When students take off, “it’s fun to get out of the way and let them go.” One of the many ways Dr. Ikenberry excelled in creating the kind of environment that stimulated student learning was in his design of academic field trips. Hundreds of students learned how to think about the natural world by studying the ecosystems of the desert Southwest, the tropics of Belize and Costa Rica, the marine biology of coastal Oregon, and the high-altitude wilderness of the Rocky Mountains in January and summer travel courses that he planned and taught.

For nearly all his life, Gilford spent summers with family at their Black River Harbor cottages on Lake Superior. Summer months with their children, grandsons, family, and friends were spent hiking the trails of the northern Michigan woods, walking the beaches of Lake Superior, exploring Black River’s great waterfalls, identifying and photographing plants, trees, and fungi, taking the boat up the beach to explore remote spots, or going fishing on Michigan’s many smaller lakes. He also enjoyed woodworking and refurbishing the cottages at Black River.

Gilford cared deeply about nature and spent most of his years exploring rich, natural environments around the globe with his love and partner, Nelda. They hiked and hut-hopped in the Austrian and Swiss Alps, explored the wilds of Scotland and Ireland, visited historic churches in Germany, and enjoyed concerts in Vienna. In addition to exploring the flora and fauna of China and Central America, they spent many months researching the work of botanist/great aunt Mary Clemens who collected and identified plants in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Australia, and other parts of the South Pacific in the early 1900s. Gilford was an accomplished photographer, and he and Nelda are well- known for their beautiful slideshow presentations that detail their international adventures.

Gilford Ikenberry’s other contributions to his college, church, and community are numerous. He and Nelda have given generously to their church and their alma mater.

Guided by a strong sense of what is just and right, he supported organizations committed to preserving the environment, redressing inequities, and improving the health and well- being of our neighbors, in our country or around the globe. Gilford sang in the choir of the McPherson Church of the Brethren when he was at home in McPherson. He also served his local congregation on many church boards and commissions. He has been an active Rotarian for more than 40 years.

Gilford’s value-led life, his belief in the potential and abilities of family and friends, his mentorship of students and interest in their careers over the years, and his commitment to concerns of the environment, equity, and justice are only a few of the ways he has impacted and inspired so many of our lives. Through 71 years of his life’s journey, he was joined by his wife Nelda who was an equal partner in all their adventures.

Mary Louise (Carpenter) Simmering was born to Clay and Ammah (Thompson) Carpenter February 20, 1929, in Davenport, Oklahoma. Mary Lou had 3 siblings Donald, Margaret and Susan. She grew up in rural Oklahoma communities before graduating from Garber, OK High School in 1946. Upon graduating from Central State University in Edmond, OK, she worked at the YWCA in Oklahoma City.&nbsp;

In 1952, she married her high school sweetheart, James Virgil Simmering.&nbsp; Following his graduation from medical school, they moved to Fort Knox, Kentucky as part of the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Mary Lou, Virgil, and their 3 children Nancy, John, and Hiram then settled in Wynnewood, OK and moved to Norman, OK in 1965, where she lived until 2012. Mary Lou was a talented seamstress, knitter, cook, baker, avid golfer, pianist, and master bridge player. She loved spending time in Colorado and indulging her 6 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by 2 sisters, one brother, one son, her husband of 60 years and her great- granddaughter Tova Lou.

She is survived by her daughter Nancy Millham (Steve), son John Simmering (Molly Gilmore), 6 grandchildren Katie Simmering Walters (Phil), Joe Millham, Luke Simmering (Morgan Raleigh), Anna Millham Lesser (Aaron), Rebecca Millham Boland (Joe), Mary Simmering Welsh (Andy) and 13 great-grandchildren Emory, Elsie, and Sam Walters, William and Clara Simmering, Mateus Millham, Ira, Juniper, Wendell, and Roland Welsh, Maxwell Lesser, June and Marigold Boland.

&nbsp;Kent Craig Adams, 73, passed away peacefully in Wichita on November 19, 2022 surrounded by family.&nbsp; Kent was born on March 3, 1949 in Great Bend, Kansas, the eldest child of Harry and Barbara Bryant Adams.&nbsp;

After graduating from high school in Great Bend, Kent joined the U.S. Navy in February 1969.&nbsp; He spent the majority of his military service as an electronics specialist stationed on the submarine support ship, the USS Dixon, in San Diego, California.&nbsp; He was honorably discharged in February 1975 after finishing his military service in the Navy Reserve.&nbsp;

Kent is survived by his wife, Sharon Volker Ochs, of Hutchinson; his stepson, Eric Ochs, of Wichita; two sisters, Brenda Ybarra, of Mound Valley and Gale (Ron) Briscoe, of Wichita; and a brother, Lynn (Ann) Adams, of Bison.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents.&nbsp;

Kent had a career in construction and was a member of the Plumber and Pipefitters Union Local #441.&nbsp; He traveled in his job, working in a number of states.&nbsp; He accumulated a long list of friends who he remained in contact with even after moving on and retiring in 2011.&nbsp;

Kent was outgoing and could be found in the local hardware and lumber stores in his blue bib overalls talking with staff and customers, always ready to share his own experience with construction methods and materials.&nbsp;&nbsp; He built his own house in rural Hutchinson and enjoyed fishing at Kansas lakes, gardening, and working on his acreage.&nbsp; He always had several projects to keep him busy but also found time for his family and his cats.&nbsp; He was a beloved uncle to all his nieces and nephews.&nbsp; And he always had a way to make his loved ones laugh.

A graveside service will take place at the Stafford Cemetery in Stafford, Kansas on a date and time to be determined.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial in honor of Kent’s life to the Golden Belt Humane Society in Great Bend.&nbsp; Minnis Chapel, Stafford is in charge of arrangements.

Wanda Florine Plautz, 95, of Bushton, Kansas, passed away November 17, 2022, at Hospital District #1 of Rice County, Lyons. She was born October 7, 1927, in Frederick, the daughter of Elda and Grace Huckstop Kitchen. 

Wanda was a lifetime Bushton area resident. She graduated from Bushton High School with the class of 1945. Wanda was a farmwife and once worked at the Rice County Extension Office in Lyons. She was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church, Bushton, United Methodist Women, and a former 4-H teacher. 

On January 27, 1946, Wanda was united in marriage with Charles Roger Plautz in Frederick. He preceded her in death on October 28, 2015. She is also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Harry Charles Kitchen; and two sisters, Arla Mae Hoelscher and Joyce Brack.

Melissa graduated from Diamond Hill - Jarvis in Fort Worth, TX. On October 12, 2007, she married James “Jim” Barton in Fort Worth, Texas. Melissa is survived by her husband, Jim; brother, Eddie “Noodle” Smothers; and her two children, daughter, Jennifer “Little” Winze and son, Jeffery Pruitt. 

There will be no public visitation as cremation was chosen. A Celebration of Melissa’s life will be held later.&nbsp;

Jerry Wells, 49, passed away in Sterling, November 13, 2022. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, August 16, 1973, to his parents, John and Gloria Wells. Jerry grew up in Hutchinson, and enjoyed a lot of outdoor activities and sports, including baseball and football.&nbsp;

Jerry loved to draw and was quite the artist. He could always be found making music, playing the guitar and drums. He played in a band around Kansas, but would frequently serenade his friends and family, guitar in hand, bringing a smile to everyone around him. Jerry always lived life to the fullest. He loved mechanics, fast cars and making music. He was able to take some of those talents and turn them into a career, as he was an accomplished machinist.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jerry is preceded in death by his father, John Wells; brother, Michael Wells and nephew, Timothy Whittier. He is survived by his mother, Gloria Wells; brothers, John (Linda) Wells, Gary Wells, Bryan Wells, Ronald Wells, sisters, Charlotte (Charles Kepford) Wells, Trina Wells, Nova Wells, Hope Wells and his son, Jacob Wells.&nbsp;

A celebration of life will be held at a later date, involving Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Church. Jerry is, as he was in life, truly unforgettable and will be greatly missed.

Jon Lynn Reifschneider, 61, passed away November 20, 2022, at his home.&nbsp; He was born January 4, 1961, in Garden City, to Gerald Lynn Reifschneider and Phyllis Joan (Renfro) Reifschneider.&nbsp; Jon spent a brief time in Saint Louis, MO, before moving to Great Bend.

Jon attended Harrison Junior High School and was a 1979 graduate of Great Bend Senior High School.&nbsp; While in high school, he played the french horn, trumpet and drums in the band.&nbsp; Jon participated in Debate and won third place at State with his debate partner, Libby Moore, and second place at Regionals.&nbsp; He was a member of the National Speech and Forensics League.&nbsp; Jon was the reporter for the Future Farmers of America (FFA) from 1978 to 1979 and a member of the State Student Congress.&nbsp; He attended Barton County Community College, graduating in 1981 with an Associates Degree in Pre-Law.&nbsp; In 1983, Jon obtained a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Political Science with an emphasis in Public Administration.

From 1983 to 1986, he was employed as a deputy for the Barton County Sheriff’s Reserve.&nbsp; Jon worked as an equipment operator and corrosion repairman for Straub Oil Field, Great Bend, from 1984 to 1986.&nbsp; He then went to work as a sales representative for AW Chesterton, Wichita, KS, from 1986 to 1991.&nbsp; In 1991, Jon was employed by JCI Industries as a Sales Engineer, Sales Manager, Vice-President of Sales and Sales Territory Manager, until 2020.&nbsp; He was the top Sales Engineer for a majority of his career.

Jon served on the Unified School District #310 Board of Education from 2001 to 2004.&nbsp; He served as the Board President from 2005 to 2009.&nbsp; Jon, along with his dear friend, James Williams, founded and served as co-chairpersons for the Arlington Recreation Commission in 2000.&nbsp; He, along with many other parent volunteers, coached just about every sport from T-ball to basketball.&nbsp; Jon was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, South Hutchinson.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, slow pitch softball, snow skiing, water skiing, and boating.&nbsp; Jon raised quail and developed the family farm into a wildlife refuge.&nbsp; In 2000, he received the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Wildlife Award.&nbsp; Jon’s favorite hobby was watching his kids participate in academic and athletic events through the collegiate level.&nbsp; Later in life, he enjoyed listening to music with his grandchildren in the man cave and teaching them about raising goats and cattle and going for rides in the polaris.

On January 10, 1987, Jon married Marilyn McIntosh, in Wichita.&nbsp; In 1996, they purchased their farm and move to Arlington.&nbsp; Together they had three children, Paul, Elizabeth, and Michael.

He is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, Marilyn Reifschneider of Arlington; children, Paul (Robin) Reifschneider of Newton, Elizabeth (Sean Boston) Reifschneider of Hays, and Michael (Madalyn Oliver) Reifschneider of Round Rock, TX; grandchildren, Avery Harper, Parker Lynn, Eli Gerald, Lucas Paul, and Landry Jon; and siblings, Tom (Tasha) Reifschneider and Lori Ann Reifschneider.

Jon was preceded in death by:&nbsp; his parents, Gerald and Phyllis Reifschneider; infant brother, Paul David Reifschneider; and parents-in-law, Charles Oscar and Leona McIntosh.

Pete Whitlock, 91, formerly of Hutchinson, died November 20, 2022, at Victoria Falls Assisted Living, Andover.&nbsp; He was born June 28, 1931, in Hutchinson, to Thomas Albert and Daisy Alice (Gass) Whitlock.

Pete served in the United States Army and Navy Reserves.&nbsp; He loved to fish and spend time with family and friends.

Pete is survived by:&nbsp; daughters, Cathy (Tom) McBride of Grandview, MO, and Cheryl (Dan) Thompson of Towanda; siblings, Shelia Mattison and Dick Whitlock, both of Hutchinson, and Micki Clift of Missouri; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren; and Joan Whitlock of Andover.&nbsp;

Marvin Leon Nelson, 71, died November 19, 2022, at his home. He was born March 26, 1951, in Ulysses, to John Henry and Fern Marie (Souder) Nelson.

For over 30 years, Marvin was the superintendent for Reno County Public Works.&nbsp; He also owned his own mechanic business, “Nelson’s Automotive”.&nbsp; Marvin enjoyed rebuilding and restoring antique vehicles, and fishing.

On April 7, 1989, he married Cheryl Ann Hoskinson, in Hutchinson.

Marvin is survived by:&nbsp; his wife of over 33 years, Cheryl; children, John W. Nelson, Donna Ranzau (Darell), Sherry Medrano, and Boe Nelson (Jessica); bonus children, Diane Favinger and Dan Smith (Kyndal); brothers, Johnny R. Nelson (Pam) and Harold D. Nelson; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by:&nbsp; his parents; three brothers, Donald Guy, Morris Guy, and Larry Guy; and one sister, Mary Guy.

Mark Stephen Knight, 57, of Lyons, passed away November 18, 2022, at Riverview Estates, Marquette. He was born May 14, 1965, in Lyons, the son of Kenneth Edward “Kenny” and JoAnna McCoy Knight. 

Mark was a lifelong Lyons resident. He graduated from Lyons High School with the class of 1983; and later attended Kansas State University and Hutchinson Community College, where he played football. Mark worked for Knight Farms, before assuming responsibility of managing Knight Feedlot from 1990 until 2016. 

He was also co-owner of Calm Creek Carriers, Lyons since 2008. Mark was a member of the Church of Christ, Lyons and attended the First Christian Church, Lyons in his early years. He served on the Lyons USD #405 School Board, KLA Leadership Conference, KLA Rice County Committeeman, KLA Board of Directors At Large, KLA Board of Directors Rice County, KLA Natural Resources Committee member, KLA Natural Resources Committee Vice Chair, KLA Natural Resources Chair, KLA Policy &amp; Resolutions Committee, KLA Water Committee, KLA School Finance Task Force, KLA Cattle Feeders Council, KLA RMS Safety Committee, Kansas Beef Council Executive Committee, NCBA Young Cattlemen’s Conference, NCBA Board of Directors Policy, NCBA Property Rights/Environmental Management Committee, and NCBA Tax &amp; Credit Committee. 

Mark was also involved with the K.A.R.L. program. Mark enjoyed going to Kansas State University Football games, tailgating with his family and friends, and taking care of pasture cattle. He played Santa on the Lyons Square at Christmastime for several years. 

On December 7, 1984, Mark was united in marriage with Sherri Suhler in Lyons. She survives of the home. Mark Stephen Knight, 57, of Lyons, passed away November 18, 2022, at Riverview Estates, Marquette. He was born May 14, 1965, in Lyons, the son of Kenneth Edward “Kenny” and JoAnna McCoy Knight. Mark was a lifelong Lyons resident. He graduated from Lyons High School with the class of 1983; and later attended Kansas State University and Hutchinson Community College, where he played football. Mark worked for Knight Farms, before assuming responsibility of managing Knight Feedlot from 1990 until 2016. He was also co-owner of Calm Creek Carriers, Lyons since 2008. Mark was a member of the Church of Christ, Lyons and attended the First Christian Church, Lyons in his early years. He served on the Lyons USD #405 School Board, KLA Leadership Conference, KLA Rice County Committeeman, KLA Board of Directors At Large, KLA Board of Directors Rice County, KLA Natural Resources Committee member, KLA Natural Resources Committee Vice Chair, KLA Natural Resources Chair, KLA Policy &amp; Resolutions Committee, KLA Water Committee, KLA School Finance Task Force, KLA Cattle Feeders Council, KLA RMS Safety Committee, Kansas Beef Council Executive Committee, NCBA Young Cattlemen’s Conference, NCBA Board of Directors Policy, NCBA Property Rights/Environmental Management Committee, and NCBA Tax &amp; Credit Committee. Mark was also involved with the K.A.R.L. program. Mark enjoyed going to Kansas State University Football games, tailgating with his family and friends, and taking care of pasture cattle. He played Santa on the Lyons Square at Christmastime for several years. On December 7, 1984, Mark was united in marriage with Sherri Suhler in Lyons. She survives of the home. John Dale Apel (Dale) passed away on November 15, 2022, in Lindsborg, Kansas, at the age of 93. Born in Wichita, he grew up on rural farms in Chautauqua and Elk Counties and graduated from Sedan High School after significant involvement in 4-H and Future Farmers of America. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Kansas State Agricultural College (later Kansas State University), and later achieved a Master of Arts degree in Communications and Social Psychology from American University in Washington, D.C., and a PhD in Adult Education from the University of Chicago. 

     Dale began his more than 45-year career with the 4-H Foundation and the Kansas State University Cooperative Extension Service, 4-H and Youth Development Department, during his Kansas State College summers when he served as an Emergency Assistant 4-H Agent. His interest continued when he was selected as one of four Kansan delegates to the National 4-H Camp in Washington, D.C. Shortly after graduating from K-State, Dale worked as editor of the South Dakota Bureau Farming and as a lobbyist for the South Dakota Farm Bureau. His 4-H Extension service was briefly interrupted when Dale served two years in the Korean war effort between 1951-1953. He served as a cryptographer in Taegu, Korea, with the U.S. Military Advisory Group to the Republic of Korea Army. 

     In 1953, Dale returned to Kansas and continued his service to the 4-H Foundation and KSU’s 4-H Extension. He worked as an agent in Morris and Saline Counties before briefly serving as the editor for the Kansas 4-H Journal in Manhattan. He built his adult life in Manhattan, serving 4-H as a specialist and most of his career as the Associate State Leader. His 4-H responsibilities included staff (volunteer and professional) development and program development, and was focused on building 4-H member retention initiatives. His advanced studies at American University and the University of Chicago led him to believe strongly in the importance of “self-set” goals as the key for 4-H member retention, as well as the basis for anyone’s career and life self-fulfillment.  

     Dale married 4-H Extension colleague Mary Dean Holle in 1961. They settled in Manhattan and raised three children, John William, Dean Marsh, and Ellen Ann. Dale and Mary Dean divorced in 1990.

     Dale was the co-founder of Kansas Evergreens, Inc. What began as a “Christmas tree farm” evolved to offer wholesale pine trees and household plant sales to major retailers in Colorado, New Mexico, and Kansas. From 1961 to the mid-1980’s, the entire family was involved in raising trees and plants. Apel Road near St. George marks the place where Christmas trees were once grown.

     Upon retirement, Dale relocated to Overland Park. He pursued a great number of personal interests including voraciously reading books of all kinds, and matting and framing pictures and prints. Dale became engrossed in genealogy and worked to develop a written history of his mother’s family, the Encells. He also worked for several years in tax return preparation. Dale developed a specific interest in the theatre and met his second wife, Shirley Tucker, while ushering for a dinner theatre. They married in March 2002, at Village Presbyterian Church and settled into her home in Overland Park. They shared a passion for day-trading, small dogs, their church, and the Kansas City Chiefs, but Dale never quite adopted Shirley’s passion for fishing. 

     Shortly after Shirley’s death in 2021, Dale moved to Lindsborg, to be closer to family. While in Lindsborg he enjoyed being near Saline County (one of his first areas of responsibility as a 4-H County Agent), being surrounded by Swedish culture, and pursuing a discipline of daily visits to the gym.

     Dale is preceded in death by his parents John George Apel, Jr. and Eleanor Dryden Encell Apel, first wife Mary Dean Holle Apel, wife Shirley Tucker Apel, brother (Paul) Encell Apel and sister-in-law Deloris Hoskins Apel. He is survived by his children John and Regina Apel (Soldier), Dean and Ann-Christin Apel (Lindsborg), Ellen Apel (Minneapolis, MN), and his six grandchildren Yeremiah Apel (Vännäs, Sweden), Yohannes and wife Cecilia Apel (Lund, Sweden), Maria Apel (Lund, Sweden), Lukas Apel (Hays), Frederik Apel (Soldier), and Phillip Apel (Soldier).

     A memorial service and time of fellowship will be held in the chapel at Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan, at 2 p.m., Sunday, December 18. A short graveside ceremony will be held the preceding day at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 17 at the Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard.

Bernard J. Hausfeld, 93, died Nov. 18, 2022 at his home outside Kingman.&nbsp; He was the son of Clarence J. and Mary A. Goebel Hausfeld.

He was born Sept. 14, 1929, in Dayton, Ohio.&nbsp; It was there he met and married the love of his life, Louise “Fritzie” Sprauer.&nbsp; She preceded him in death shortly following their 60th wedding anniversary to prepare his new home with the Lord.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as a Designated Aviation Photographer, Second Class Petty Officer.&nbsp; Returning to Dayton, Ohio, Bernie became a Design Engineer for NCR (National Cash Register).&nbsp; The company sent his family of eight to Wichita, Kansas in 1973.&nbsp; In their later years, they moved to the country to enjoy the quiet life together.

He was a member of the St. Louis Catholic Church, Waterloo.

Bernie is survived by his six children; Regina Barker (Mark), Dianna Simon (Fred), Patricia Pearson (Travis), Chris Hausfeld (Amy), Maria Hoffman (Matt), Bill Hausfeld (Anne Marie); his brother Gene Hausfeld; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings Irene, CJ, Collette, Clete, Bob, Jerry and Carm.

Marleen Fairchild, 75, died November 17, 2022 at Wheatlands Health Care Center, Kingman.

She was born November 11, 1947, at Kingman, the daughter of Lawrence Dean and Etta Mae Harrison Cooley.  A lifelong resident of Kingman County, she was a retired Physician Assistant, Registered Nurse and Paramedic.  She was a Diploma Nurse graduating from Grace Hospital School of Nursing in 1969.  She was the first female EMS Director for Kingman County and served as a Member of the Board of the Kansas EMS.  She was a Physician Assistant under Dr. Victoria Moots and practiced at the Cunningham Clinic and Donley Clinic.

She was a member of Kingman Christian Church.

On June 9, 1973, she married Duane Fairchild at Kingman, he died January 3, 2010.  Survivors include daughters, Kim Fairchild (Bob Moorokian), Kristy Sourk (Bob), Lora Johnston (Brad), Kerri Hageman-Smith (Kam);  Daughter-In-Law Jenny Fairchild; sisters, LaDean Bailey (Jack), Rogene Jarmer (Wayne); 24 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by two sons, David Fairchild and Robert Holland; and parents Dean and Etta Mae Cooley.

Services will be held Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at 1:00 pm with pastors Josh Bell, Kelly Jayne and Robert Roswurm at Kingman Christian Church, Kingman. Through the years Curtis worked for Midwest Industries in McPherson as a production worker. Curtis enjoyed remote control planes, models, gardening, yard work, his dogs and spending time with friends and family. Curtis Eugene Rhea was united in marriage to Dena Sue Trindale on Oct. 1, 1971. The young couple established their first home together in McPherson. This union was blessed with the birth of three sons, Timothy, Heath and Brian. Todd David Culver, 53, of Inman, passed away at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, November 20, 2022 at his residence. Todd was born in McPherson, on June 12, 1969, a son of Connie Lynn (Gibson) Duske and David Frank Culver. Through the years Todd attended Lincoln Grade School, McPherson Junior High School, McPherson Middle School and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson. Through the years Todd worked as a Fiberizer for John Manville. Todd enjoyed kayaking, music and baseball. Todd David Culver was united in marriage to Stacey Lynette Baxter on August 19, 1988 in McPherson. The young established their first home in McPherson. This union was blessed with the birth of three children, Samantha, Sommer and Slater.. He is survived by his parents, Connie Duske and her husband Dean, of McPherson, Kansas and David Culver, of McPherson, Kansas; his children, Sommer Oliver, of McPherson, and Slater Culver, of Inman; his brother, Darin Duske, of McPherson and his sister, Ashley Duske, of McPherson. He is survived by his parents, Connie Duske and her husband Dean, of McPherson, Kansas and David Culver, of McPherson, Kansas; his children, Sommer Oliver, of McPherson, and Slater Culver, of Inman; his brother, Darin Duske, of McPherson and his sister, Ashley Duske, of McPherson. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Kydon and Sawyer. Todd was preceded in death by his wife Stacey. Services will be at a later date.&nbsp;&nbsp;
