MCPHERSON COUNTY—State officials are investigating an incident involving a patient transfer from&nbsp;Osawatomie State Hospital that occurred in McPherson County.

"An individual being transported from our facility on September 18, was involved in an incident on a public highway that temporarily halted traffic, according to a statement from the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services.

"The individual was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and has since been moved to another state facility." "We are cooperating with authorities and reviewing our transportation policies to ensure the safety of our patients and the public."

The state provided no further details due to privacy concerns.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Amanda Buethe, a second Grade teacher at Faris Elementary School in Hutchinson has been named the Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Teacher of the Month for September.

Buethe is in her 22nd year in education and has taught every level from kindergarten through 12th grade.

"I started in McPherson, which was amazing," Buethe said. "They really do things there to where I was built up as a new teacher, and then I went back to my hometown in western Kansas and taught in Ness City for 11 years, and that's where I really learned to be a good teacher. We moved to Hutch four years ago and it's been a great transition here, too."

This year marks her first time teaching second grade in USD 308.

"I taught fifth and then I was an instructional coach for a couple years, and then I got back in the classroom and did third grade and then now second. I'll teach whatever, it doesn't matter, I try to go where I'm needed. This year we did it to where there's kind of a veteran teacher in every grade, which helped. I'll just teach, whatever my favorite grade is whatever I'm teaching at the time."

She said her motivation comes from seeing her students succeed.

"I think when those kids finally get it, I think that's very rewarding," Buethe said. "I think when they get excited about learning about something, when I get and follow their curiosity, I think that's very rewarding when we finally meet some expectation or some goal that we have been striving for, that's really rewarding, that kind of keeps me going. I also really think I've done it this long because I've had amazing colleagues for the last 23 years, the fact the blood, sweat and tears that they've put into it keeps me going every day as well."

Buethe said the recognition is meaningful because it reflects the collective effort of her school.

“It’s great to be recognized, but teaching is not individual, it’s collective,” she said. “I love that Faris as a building was recognized. The surprise for my kids was the best part; they were so excited. It really boosted them to see their hard work celebrated, not just mine.”

Buethe also credits the environment at Faris Elementary for her enthusiasm.

"Faris is an amazing building to work, but also to just go every day we have people who are doing really amazing heart work, right?" Buethe said. "So we really try to educate that whole child, and we really try to find and lift up our students and figure out what really makes them, and go from there. You walk through our hallways and there's lots of laughter. You walk through our hallways and there's lots of team building and team working together. People pick up the slack where needed. I could not have asked for a better place to work at USD 308."

She was nominated by Brandae Tate, who praised Buethe’s dedication.

"Amanda&nbsp;is beyond committed to being the best teacher she can be. She is the first one in the building and the last one to leave. She puts in so much personal time to help her classroom. Beyond inside the school she is always growing in her profession. She is always willing to partake in professional development. I cannot think of a more deserving recipient."

Faris Elementary teacher Buethe named Teacher of the Month

McPherson College is a great place to work, according to a new survey by the Great Colleges to Work For® program. The results, featured in a special edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education, recognize McPherson College for the 11th consecutive year.

The results are based on a survey completed by 199 colleges nationwide. In total, only 76 institutions achieved recognition on the list for specific practices and policies. McPherson College was recognized in 4 categories, including compensation &amp; benefits, confidence in leadership, shared governance, and faculty experience.

“Supported by a dedicated community of employees, McPherson College continues to achieve significant milestones,” said President Michael Schneider. “With valuable input shaping the college’s 10-year strategic plan, employees are strengthening the college’s effort to build new innovative academic programs, campus facilities, and wellness initiatives, while providing the highest quality education and student experience.”

President Schneider points to some basic practices, such as the college’s compensation plan and benefits, including retirement contributions made after one year of employment, as reasons why people like working for McPherson College. Monthly all-campus meetings, called “huddles, where information is shared from across campus, foster community involvement. Initiatives such as training from the Kansas Leadership Center, which develops adaptive problem-solving skills, and community participation in developing the college’s strategic plan set McPherson College apart from other college campuses.

In a comment featured on the survey’s website, one McPherson College employee says, “At McPherson College, faculty and staff have opportunities to engage in the strategic planning of the college. It’s reassuring to know the direction and goals of the college and to feel you are a part of its advancement.”

McPherson College began the academic year by opening the Campus Commons, a 55,000-square-foot campus hub for student services. The new building is part of the college’s larger expansion effort, which has seen campus size increase by 20%. Nearly half of all existing campus buildings have been renovated, including all student residence halls, as well as the Holman Fieldhouse, home of Bulldog athletics; Melhorn Hall science labs; Mohler Hall classrooms; and computer labs across campus.

In August, the Higher Learning Commission reaffirmed McPherson College’s accreditation and invited the college to pursue the Open Pathway for its next 10-year accreditation cycle, signaling confidence in the college’s ability to meet its mission and maintain high institutional standards.

“All of our accomplishments and successes are due in large part to the unique persistence of the dedicated people who work here,” said President Schneider. “This national recognition is a reflection of the hardworking employees at McPherson College, who go out of their way not only to make McPherson College a great place to work but a world-class learning institution.”

Three-day weather outlook 

&nbsp;One person was critically injured Thursday morning in a four-vehicle crash near Yoder Road and Trail West Road, according to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched to the scene at approximately 6:40 a.m. When they arrived, they found one driver trapped inside their vehicle, and was conscious and communicating with emergency responders. The individual was later extricated by Reno County Fire District crews and EMS personnel before being transported in critical condition to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

The occupants of the three other vehicles involved sustained minor injuries. Deputies with the Reno County Sheriff’s Office investigated the crash, with assistance from the Kansas Highway Patrol. Officers with the South Hutchinson and Hutchinson Police Departments helped manage traffic in the area.

The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing and no further details are available at this time.

Four-vehicle crash in Reno County sends one to Wichita hospital

The Kansas Corporation Commission on Thursday approved a unanimous settlement agreement allowing Evergy to raise its electric rates by $128 million.

The utility had requested a $196.4 million increase in its January filing, but the final amount was reduced following months of negotiations with KCC staff, the Citizens Utility Ratepayer Board, and intervenors representing school districts, businesses, and other customer groups.

The new rates will take effect beginning with the October billing cycle. For residential customers using an average of 900 kilowatt-hours per month, the increase will amount to about $8.47 more on their monthly bill.

In its order, the Commission said the approved rates will provide Evergy with sufficient revenue to meet its financial obligations and invest in grid resiliency while keeping customer costs “as low as reasonably possible” and maintaining reliable service.

Commissioner Dwight D. Keen filed a partial dissent, objecting to the Commission’s approval of a 9.7% return on equity for transmission delivery charges. Those charges, which cover the cost of building and maintaining transmission lines, are not included in base rates but are passed through to customers as a separate surcharge. Keen argued the approved rate of return is excessive and could create ongoing affordability concerns for Kansans.

The rate increase comes as utilities across the region work to replace aging infrastructure and strengthen reliability in response to extreme weather events and growing energy demand.

Rural Kansas is defined as anywhere outside Douglas, Johnson, Sedgwick,&nbsp;Shawnee&nbsp;or Wyandotte counties.&nbsp;

Recipients receive the grant money in three installments, with the first $5,500 paid after passing the bar examination and starting practice in rural Kansas. The remaining installments will be paid after a recipient’s continued practice in rural Kansas for one and two years, respectively.&nbsp;To date, 11 grant recipients&nbsp;are working in private and public positions in 10 counties in&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;and&nbsp;are eligible to receive&nbsp;more than $180,000 from the Rural Law Practice Grant&nbsp;program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rural Kansas is defined as anywhere outside Douglas, Johnson, Sedgwick,&nbsp;Shawnee&nbsp;or Wyandotte counties.&nbsp;Recipients receive the grant money in three installments, with the first $5,500 paid after passing the bar examination and starting practice in rural Kansas. Local attorney receives KFB Rural Law Practice grant

A Hutchinson dentist and a team of volunteers will provide free dental care this weekend to residents without insurance or financial means as part of the annual Grace Dental Day.

Dr. Grant Ringler, along with four other dentists, five hygienists and about 50 volunteers, will treat patients beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at Ringler’s office, 3008 Garden Grove Parkway. Services will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Patients may receive one of three treatments at no cost: a cleaning, a filling or an extraction. Organizers expect to serve between 100 and 150 people.

“This is really designed for those in our community who have no means, no resources to have dental work done,” Ringler said. “We love being able to serve our community and pay it forward.”

The effort coincides with Grace Health Day at Grace Bible Church, a few blocks from Ringler’s office. Parking is available at the church, with golf carts shuttling patients between the sites.

Ringler said past events have provided the equivalent of $50,000 to $75,000 worth of dental care. “If I could do dentistry for free and still pay a team, I would,” he said. “This is one way we can give back.”

No advance registration is required. Patients are encouraged to arrive early, with registration possibly opening at 7:30 a.m.

The Buhler Community Foundation has awarded more than $40,000 in grants to seven organizations, the foundation announced Monday.

The largest award went to the Buhler Adult Community Center, which received $12,000 for emergency replacement of heating and cooling equipment.

Prairie Hills Middle School, which received $7,000 to build a greenhouse for pollinator-friendly plants such as honeybees and monarch butterflies. The facility will support both classroom lessons and extracurricular programs.

Buhler Recreation, awarded $6,000 annually for four years to expand youth sports opportunities through scholarships and partnerships with USD 313 and the Hutchinson Recreation Commission.

Buhler Grade School PTO, which received $5,000 to install new auditorium lighting for student performances.

Buhler Police Department, awarded $4,648 to purchase upgraded computers capable of handling advanced software, improving safety and connectivity.

City of Buhler, which received $3,700 to honor veterans and enhance downtown with seasonal and veteran-themed banners.

Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church, which was awarded $2,600 to expand safe after-game activities for Buhler High School students, in partnership with Hutchinson Friends Church and Buhler High School.

The grants were distributed from the foundation’s Fund for Buhler and the Buhler Public Health Endowment Fund.

Execute and direct nursing care in accordance with regulations, guidelines, standards and Wesley Towers policy.

Perform duties of CNA, CMA, or other nursing staff as needed to fulfill the resident’s individualized plan of care. Provide residents with opportunities for independence and choice consistent with their care plan.

The resident is number one at Wesley Towers. Therefore job duties can include anything that helps the resident to attain or maintain the highest possible functioning. These tasks must be within the nurses’ scope of practice depending on whether he/she is an LPN or an RN.

GENERAL DUTIES include, but are not limited to:

Interpret the individualized plan of care for each resident to other members of the team.

Supervise CNA's and CMA's in providing quality, personalized care for each resident in assigned area.

Together with CMA or another professional nurse, complete count of restricted drugs as necessary.

Responsible for admission nursing assessments of residents, transfer sheets and discharge instruction sheets for those leaving the facility. Complete discharge summary upon discharge of a resident. Coordinate with other team members, departments, unit coordinators, and physician to insure successful transfer of residents.

Provide a report of the pertinent information regarding happenings to the residents assigned to their team for new team members coming on duty.

Together with unit coordinator, assure that the resident's physician is notified of changes in condition and that the physician's plan of care is carried out.

Attend Care Planning sessions for assigned residents when possible.

Complete documentation on resident's chart as applicable: document resident response and outcomes to the plan of care.

Initiate appropriate action as resident needs arise.

Work with and cooperate with facility consultants and implement changes as authorized by DON.

Ensure all procedures for administration, storage, ordering, disposal, control of medications and supplies are followed by personnel.

Demonstrate safety and cost effectiveness in the delivery of care according to standards/policies/procedures/regulations.

Practice universal precautions and proper disposal of infectious waste at all times. Perform TB testing as needed for residents. Perform TB testing to team members as directed by Home Health Coordinator.

Report incidents/accidents and exposures according to policy. Assist in identifying safety hazards and emergency situations and initiate immediate action as needed.

Respond to emergency calls throughout the Wesley Towers’ complex as assigned.

Assist residents with transfers, promote ambulation and exercises, transport residents as needed and as designated on resident Plan of Care using gait belts, proper transfer techniques and lifts per facility policy and procedure.

Use and operate equipment in a safe manner. Report unsafe or defective equipment. Follow all safety precautions.

Note safety hazards and report/correct them immediately.

Assist in the nursing process as requested by the DON and UCC and according to licensure by the State.

Assist in the continuous service improvement process as requested by DON, UCC or CSI committee.

Is aware of location/content of all standards/policy/procedure manuals, safety data sheets, and how to use them. Is familiar with all regulations governing nursing and resident care, and is aware of the location of these.

Cooperate with all personnel within and between departments, customers and outside contacts in a team-like atmosphere.

Currently licensed as an (LPN or RN) in the State of Kansas.

Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.

Capable of understanding, following and/or issuing oral and written instructions.

Ability to communicate with other licensed nurses and to accept counsel from his/her unit coordinator.

Ability to develop positive rapport with other staff, residents, families, and other departments.

Positive, understanding attitude towards dementia, ill, elderly residents.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, and other departments within the facility.

Must be flexible as schedule changes. Willingness to work with the realization that errors or incompetence can cause serious consequences for the resident. Must have patience and tact and be able to communicate effectively with residents, families, and other staff members. Must have good eyesight to observe residents and to give nursing care, read thermometers, and to complete documentation. Can hear normal and soft tones to hear resident calls. Be aware that working with residents with dementia may expose staff to residents who become violent, combative, or aggressive without notice or provocation. It is important for all staff to respond in appropriate manner, remaining calm and non-threatening. Must be able to distinguish smells. Is familiar with and capable of operating all special equipment utilized for the benefit of the residents within health care.

Works in well-lit and ventilated building. May be exposed to residents having communicable diseases and disagreeable odors. Possible exposure to sharp materials and/or instruments. May be subjected to stressful situations and uncomfortable surroundings.

The Reno County Commission moved quickly through its agenda Wednesday, unanimously approving a series of items ranging from digital evidence upgrades at the Sheriff’s Office to a new partnership supporting infrastructure for the Evergy plant project.

Commissioners signed off on routine business, including vouchers for county expenses, a budget adjustment for the Community Corrections Juvenile Behavioral Health Grant, and setting the canvass date for the Nov. 4 city/school election. The canvass will take place at 8 a.m. on Nov. 12, 2025.

The consent agenda also included approval of Resolution 2025-28 &amp; Planning Case #2025-09, making text amendments to zoning and subdivision regulations.

A highlight of the consent items was authorization for the Sheriff’s Office to purchase two forensic computers at $10,200 each. Detective Keaton Berger told commissioners the systems will enhance digital evidence processing capabilities. The $25,000 purchase is fully funded through a grant from the Kansas Attorney General’s Office, meaning no direct cost to county taxpayers.

Appraiser’s Report: Commissioners acknowledged receipt of the county appraiser’s annual report. The Kansas Department of Revenue’s Property Valuation Division gave the office a 100% compliance score. Operations remain on budget, and no follow-up presentation was deemed necessary unless future issues arise.

MOU with Growth Inc.: County Counselor Patrick Hoffman outlined an agreement with Growth Inc. to serve as a sub-recipient of reimbursable grant funds for engineering and design work on three miles of road leading to the planned Evergy plant. The upgraded roads will meet state specifications. Public Works will issue requests for qualifications (RFQs) for design services, and the county will coordinate with Evergy on a development agreement for road maintenance and cost-sharing.

Administrator Randy Partington presented positive monthly department and financial updates: •&nbsp; Major departments remain on budget and operating normally. •&nbsp; Revenues are tracking at 98–99% of projections, exceeding expectations. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Expenditures are at 57% of budget year-to-date, leaving a strong fund balance. •&nbsp;&nbsp;The General Fund has grown from $17 million to $20 million. Fund transfers for youth services, public health, and employee health insurance are scheduled before year-end. •&nbsp;Fund transfers for youth services, public health, and employee health insurance are scheduled before year-end.
