Kansas wheat growers know that success starts with strong, resilient varieties. Few understand this better than Dr. Guorong Zhang, a wheat breeder at Kansas State University's Agricultural Research Center in Hays. In a recent episode of the Wheat’s On Your Mind podcast, Zhang discussed his breeding philosophy, career path, and the future of wheat development in Kansas.

Zhang’s journey began on a small farm in eastern China’s Zhejiang Province, where his family farmed rice and jute on less than an acre. After studying at Zhejiang Agriculture University, he spent time in barley research before coming to the U.S. for a Ph.D. in plant breeding at North Dakota State. That experience led him through research roles in soybean and biofuel crops, and eventually to K-State in 2012, where he took over the Hays breeding program.

“At the beginning, yield was my main focus,” Zhang said. “Farmers need high-yielding varieties to be profitable. Over time, I added more objectives—disease resistance, drought tolerance, and quality.”

His program has produced widely adopted varieties including Joe, KS Dallas, and KS Bill Snyder. Named in honor of the Hall of Fame football coach, the Snyder variety gained attention for its strong yield potential and broad adaptability. Zhang continues refining its drought tolerance as part of ongoing improvements.

Kansas weather has created some of Zhang’s toughest hurdles. In 2021, a hailstorm destroyed up to 80% of his trial plots in Hays, setting the program back significantly. These experiences have reinforced his focus on resilience in both environmental and disease-related stress.

“We’re getting better data, faster,” Zhang said, referencing the integration of double haploid breeding and drone phenotyping into his program. “The goal is to develop varieties that can handle both environmental stress and disease pressure.”

Field testing takes place across eight locations in western Kansas, including five farmer-managed sites. These trials give Zhang’s team insight into how lines perform under real-world growing conditions. He values the feedback received during field days and uses it to refine breeding goals for future releases.

“The western Kansas variety has strong resistance to Triticum mosaic virus and wheat streak mosaic virus, as well as improved drought tolerance,” Zhang said of two new releases expected this year. “The central Kansas variety has exceptional yield potential and strong disease resistance.”

His breeding program also includes collaborative work with universities like Colorado State to tackle new threats like wheat stem sawfly. Together, they evaluate new lines and share research data to speed up resistance development for high-risk regions.

Even as technology and challenges evolve, Zhang stays grounded in the basics: better yield, better disease resistance, and better quality. “We want Kansas farmers to have access to the best possible wheat varieties,” he said.

The city of Hutchinson has closed a section of eastbound Avenue G for railroad crossing repairs due to damaged railroad pads.

Eastbound Avenue G is closed at the crossing between Commerce Street and Airport Road.

There is no timeline for repair to the crossing.&nbsp; We have reached out to the railroad for more information. We have not received a response to our inquiry.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of East 2nd on the south side.

In all of Hutchinson's long history, the two structures that have always occupied the addresses of 15, 17 and 19 E. 2nd Ave. have always been establishments for lodging.

The first, built in 1888, was the New Howard House.

Then by 1893, it became the Brunswick Hotel. The first photo shows that about 1904.

In 1905, it became the Baldwin Hotel. The second photo shows that about 1922.

In 1937, the upper floor was relabeled the Midland Hotel, with the lower floor leased out to Salt City Federal Savings &amp; Loan and the Wade Patton Insurance Co. The third photo shows the businesses as they looked in 1939.

In 1946, The Bisonte Hotel closed and Hutch was limited in downtown amenities.

In January 1949, V.M. Wiley and Ray Dillon spearheaded the proposal of the Metropolitan Hotel Corp. to build a new downtown hotel and convention center. They sold stock for this venture and, in 1953, construction started. The fourth photo shows the hotel construction in 1953.

On Feb. 13, 1954, the Baker Hotel opened. The fifth photo shows the Baker Hotel in 1958.

It housed many famous guests. The sixth photo shows Roy Clark and Jimmy Dean having dinner in the Baker Hotel dining room in 1962. They were in town to perform at the Kansas State Fair.

After many ownership changes, such as the Hilton Inn, Key To America Inn and The Kansas Inn, it was shuttered in 1975.

The building was purchased in 1978 and converted to downtown apartments and renamed Plaza Towers. The seventh photo shows the 15-19 E. 2nd building today, still the Plaza Towers and owned by Mark and Phoebe Davenport out of Kansas City, Kansas.

The USD 308 Board of Education discussed the bond issue for building a facility for students in grades 6-8 during its meeting Monday night.

The bond election was delayed earlier this year due to issues with state funding, Superintendent Dawn Johnson said.

"Yeah, you know, we took a slight pause for that," Johnson said. "We were hoping to ask our community to vote on the large project we want to do, which is a building for grades six, seven and eight."

"Right now, we have a standalone seventh grade and a standalone eighth grade. I think it's going to be critical to create a more cohesive structure for our already great organization at USD 308, but we had to take a slight pause," she said. "The state has a cap on the amount of money it will apply toward bonds, and that cap was met by the time we made our decisions and reviewed the situation."

Johnson said the state has approved the bond issue, but the election must be held after July 1.

At Monday’s meeting, the board began considering a date for a special bond election.

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) wants to remind utility customers that there are two important dates coming up that they should be aware of.  First, the Cold Weather Rule ends on Monday, March 31. The Cold Weather Rule protects residential customers, served by KCC regulated utilities, from disconnection when temperatures are forecast to drop below 35 degrees.

In addition, Monday is the deadline to apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program, known as LIEAP. Applications for the federally funded program must be received by the Kansas Department of Children and Families by 5 p.m. on Monday.  Information about the program is available at https://www.dcf.ks.gov/services/ees/Pages/EnergyAssistance.aspx

When the Cold Weather Rule is in effect, regulated utilities are required to offer a 12-month payment plan upon request, even if a previous payment plan has been broken. When that protection ends on Monday, failure to make arrangements or failure to adhere to an already established payment plan could result in disconnection. Reconnection after March 31 may require past due balances be paid in full, depending on the utility's policy. That is why it is important to call now – while regulated utilities are still required to offer the Cold Weather Rule 12-month payment plan.

The KCC urges all customers facing financial difficulties to act now to stay connected. To find out more about utility assistance programs in your area, please contact your utility or the KCC Consumer Protection Office at 800-662-0027 or 785-271-3140. Utility assistance program information is also posted on the KCC’s website.

It is important to note that the KCC does not regulate co-ops or municipal utilities, although many of those utilities also offer a cold weather payment plan. Cold Weather Rule and the LIEAP application period end soon

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Warmer days may lead many to itch for spring and summer, but a Kansas State University entomologist cautions against a small mite that is likely to give you a less-pleasing seasonal itch.

Chiggers are active beginning in April, says K-State’s Raymond Cloyd, and are usually found in areas with unmanaged vegetation, as well as parks, golf courses, sports fields and other grassy areas. The larvae attach themselves to humans, pets and other animals.

“Chiggers do not suck blood,” Cloyd said. “Rather, chiggers burrow and feed on dissolved skin. The larvae inject a saliva that causes the skin tissue to dissolve, and that is what the chigger larvae feed on.”

Cloyd cautions humans to resist the urge to scratch.

“You want to avoid scratching too often because you can promote a bacterial infection by opening wounds,” he said. “I’ve been bitten by chiggers many times, and I know it’s very tempting to scratch, but you don’t want to create a bigger problem.”

Cloyd said some topical ointments may help with the itch and a dermatologist may be able to provide recommendations.

Dillons is hosting a Community Day meal packing event at the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship in Hutchinson to benefit the Food Bank of Reno County and our local neighbors in need.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan – As egg prices continue to increase in grocery stores, Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee said it might be beneficial to consider replacing eggs in certain recipes.

Blakeslee said the type of egg substitute to choose depends on the end product and the function it needs to provide. She cited information from her extension colleagues at the University of Illinois, who published various substitutes for recipes that require binding, leavening, moisture and other alternatives.

Blakeslee recommends using two ounces of extra-firm tofu to replace one boiled egg. If a recipe utilizes eggs to hold ingredients together, Blakeslee suggests using one tablespoon of chia seeds or ground flax seeds mixed with three tablespoons of water to replace one egg.

Another option, she said, is one package plain gelatin and two tablespoons of warm water to replace one egg.

“For leavening in baking, use the chia or flax seed mixture plus a half teaspoon of baking powder for each egg,” Blakeslee said. “For moistness in baking, use a quarter cup applesauce, mashed banana, pureed avocado, pureed garbanzo beans, or silken tofu for each egg. Another option is two tablespoons mayonnaise for each egg.”

According to the American Egg Board, shell eggs in the original carton can be stored in the refrigerator cabinet for 4-5 weeks beyond the pack date.

“This will likely go past the ‘sell by’ date on the carton, but they will be safe to use after that date as long as they have been refrigerated. This can help reduce food waste,” Blakeslee said.

Blakeslee also suggested freezing eggs for later use.

“Think about cutting back daily egg use to every other day to change up your routine and add variety,” Blakeslee said.

AG Minute:  EPA tailpipe emissions rule 

Cow Patty was a stray dog brought in by animal control and smelled like cow poop. It was believed he belonged to someone at an apartment complex, but no one came forward to claim him. Patty is 2 years old, and is believed to be an Irish Setter mix. Patty is 55 pounds of pure love, and thankfully, no longer smells like an actual cow patty. He is very treat motivated!”

Officer Shuck and Patty enjoyed walking around the duck ponds at Carey Park and looking at all the geese. Patty was very interested in the geese but did a good job staying on his leash and listening to Officer Shuck’s commands. Patty gets excited when he meets new people but quickly calms down so he can get chin scratches and hugs. Patty would be a great fit for anyone who needs a loveable family dog! 

On a side note: We recommend giving Patty an updated name, or just call him "Pat."

RENO COUNTY —One person died in an accident just before 9:30p.m. Monday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Dodge Dakota driven by Preston Lee&nbsp;Lewis, 37, Hutchinson, was westbound on 17th Avenue a quarter mile East of Faubian Street.

The pickup crossed the center line and struck an eastbound 2023 Buick Envision driven by Helen I.&nbsp;Blevins, 61, Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Blevins was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported Elliott Mortuary. EMS transported Lewis and a passenger in the SUV identified as Stephanie Paige&nbsp;Blevins, 29, Hutchinson, to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Lewis was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The Inman Scholarship Foundation is seeking applicants for the Agatha Smyers Scholarship for a student who is interested in the service industry: educators, clergy, social services, registered nursing, physical therapy, physicians or dentists. The scholarship will be awarded based upon achievement in college, financial need, potential to make an impact on others and involvement in leadership and community service.

The scholarship is available for any Inman High School graduate who has completed five semesters of college and is working toward a degree in one of the above mentioned service related careers. The scholarship amount is $500 distributed $250 per semester for one year.

On Monday, the McPherson County Sheriff's office reported they were contacted on March 17 in reference to the death in the city of Moundridge, according to a media release.

&nbsp;Due to the active investigation and pending autopsy results, the sheriff's office released no additional details.

A little over five years ago the world as we know it changed forever when COVID-19 swept across the globe bringing fear, uncertainty and drastic countermeasures with it. A lot has changed in the half decade after we collectively watched “Tiger King” while keeping a close eye on the supply of toilet paper.

While change isn’t always for the better, there are plenty of other places you can go if you’d like to rehash what society got wrong five years ago. Instead, I’d like to celebrate one of the many things that we gained through the pandemic that’s made life better today: Shop Kansas Farms.

A little over a month into everyone staying at home while supply chains were straining to keep up with an unfathomable shift in where and what we were eating, Rick McNary’s wife told him she saw an empty meat counter at the store earlier that day.

McNary understood that food is often bought at the grocery store but comes from farmers and ranchers, who were definitely still farming and ranching. He grabbed his laptop, opened up Facebook and created a group to connect shoppers with the farmers and ranchers who produce the food we eat.

It was the right solution at the right time. More than 5,000 members joined in the first 24 hours and that grew tenfold in the course of the first week. Five years later, Shop Kansas Farms is still growing with more than 170,000 members consisting of consumers looking for anything that grows in Kansas and the growers who can fulfill their orders.

The group has expanded to a searchable website, www.shopkansasfarms.com, and live events like the upcoming Market of Farms at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on March 29. Other states have even copied the model to connect buyers and sellers.

McNary’s background as a pastor and in international relief efforts certainly helped in creating the viral sensation when Shop Kansas Farms first launched, as did timing. But it’s grown because he understood the group was more than a mere marketplace.

It took off like a wildfire racing across the prairie because five years ago everyone was isolated and Shop Kansas Farms was a community. One that used modern tools to connect us in familiar ways.

Much as Shop Kansas Farms reimagined how shoppers purchase food during the pandemic, it’s also working to make the supply chain more resilient through another idea from McNary. His Harvest Hub model starts with growers but also includes processors and distributors at a local or regional level.

McNary is always quick to point out he has had help even early on, but he has been the driving force behind the growth and evolution of Shop Kansas Farms. And he still adheres to one of the first mandates adopted shortly after creating the group: to prosper farmers and ranchers.

After five years of learning and development, the group is still going strong. Farmers and ranchers never stopped growing during the pandemic, and thanks to McNary we were able to keep shopping.
