BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler High School is among 23 Kansas schools recognized by the Kansas State High School Activities Association for outstanding performing arts programs during the 2025-26 school year.
Buhler was one of 18 schools receiving recognition at the “commended” level. Other area schools earning the designation included Halstead, McPherson, Newton and Smoky Valley high schools.
The Performing Arts School of Excellence program recognizes success across debate, speech, music and theater. Honorees were selected by representatives from the Kansas Music Educators Association, Kansas Speech Communication Association, Kansas Thespians and KSHSAA.
Olathe Northwest High School was named the 2026-27 Performing Arts School of Excellence award winner. The school previously received commendations in 2022 and 2025 but earned the top award for the first time this year.
Andover, Manhattan, Sterling and Washburn Rural were selected as finalists.
“The Performing Arts School of Excellence Award is incredibly special and difficult to win,” KSHSAA Assistant Executive Director Megan Hagaman said. “It requires exceptional students, staff and school system support across all aspects of performing arts.”
The selection committee chose one winner, four finalists and 18 commended schools. Each of the 23 recognized schools will receive a certificate from KSHSAA.
