TOPEKA, KAN. - The Kansas Chamber on Friday announced Lowen Corporation is the Chamber’s 2025 Ad Astra Award honoree.

Each year during its annual dinner, the Chamber and its members recognize a Kansas company with the Ad Astra Award. The award recognizes a Kansas business for its unique contributions to the economic health and welfare of the state. This honor is presented to a business that exemplifies both business and civic excellence within the state.

Hutchinson's Lowen Corporation named Kansas Chamber's 2025 Ad Astra Award honoree

TOPEKA, Kan.&nbsp; – Governor Laura Kelly signed on Monday Senate<a target="_blank" href="https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fkslegislature.gov%2Fli%2Fb2025_26%2Fmeasures%2Fsb8%2F/1/01010195c951d3b2-291024a3-657d-4709-8ed8-4fcade968268-000000/2JdQi9Q-BHe4OalomnCV70hnjfUUdifQhrgEr7hzdrE=397">&nbsp;Bill 8,</a>&nbsp;which requires drivers to move over when passing stationary vehicles displaying hazard warning lights.

“Thanks to this commonsense bill, all drivers will now be required to move over or slow down if there is a vehicle on the side of the road with flashing lights,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“This bill will improve safety and will make it easier to educate the driving public.”

Senate Bill 8 works to protect both drivers of disabled vehicles displaying hazard warning signal lights and other drivers on the road. The bill requires drivers on the road to proceed with caution and change lanes away from the disabled vehicle if it is possible and safe to do so.

"Eighty-two crashes occurred from 2018-2023 with someone in a vehicle while on the side of the road,”&nbsp;said State Representative for the 125th District Shannon Francis.&nbsp;“This bill will improve driver behavior by creating consistency with other move-over bills for law enforcement, first responders, and utility vehicles, among others."

Historically, move-over protections had been limited to emergency personnel. Over time, these protections included road service vehicles, utility, and tow trucks. This year, move-over protections will apply to all highway vehicles.

“Senate Bill 8 is a commonsense safety measure that will enhance protections for all travelers on Kansas roadways,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;Senator for District 7 Ethan Corson&nbsp; “With its enactment, we’re taking meaningful steps to look out for drivers and passengers.”

Kelly signs move over bill

The Kansas Teachers' Hall of Fame has announced the induction of Erma Moses, a distinguished educator with nearly 40 years of dedicated service in Kansas schools. Mrs. Moses, who retired from USD 405 Lyons, has been recognized for her exceptional contributions to the teaching profession and her unwavering commitment to student success. 

Throughout her career, Mrs. Moses taught various levels of secondary math, including Algebra I, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Statistics.  Her innovative teaching methods, such as the Barbie Bungee Jump experiment, engaged students in hands-on learning and fostered critical thinking skills.  Her classroom was known for its welcoming environment, where every student felt valued and motivated to succeed. 

Mrs. Moses's influence extended beyond the classroom.  She was a mentor to fellow teachers, a coach for math competition teams, and an active participant in community and church activities.  Her dedication to education was evident in her involvement with the Kansas Association of Teachers of Mathematics, where she authored contest questions and presented at conventions. 

Her numerous awards and recognitions, including being named USD 405 District Teacher of the Year multiple times and receiving the Ray and Evelyn Lippelmann Outstanding Teacher Award, highlight her impact on the educational community.  Mrs. Moses's legacy is marked by her ability to inspire students and colleagues alike, making her a deserving inductee into the Kansas Teachers' Hall of Fame.

Retired Lyons teacher named to Kansas Teacher Hall of Fame 

Hutchinson Mayor Stacy Goss was in to visit on the BW Morning Show, she talked about the project that began on Monday in northern Hutchinson, 30th Avenue between Main Street and Adams Street. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“So that is something that was requested in the budget in, I want to say 2023 and then it got moved. Something else swooped in and took its place”, said Goss. &nbsp;

This is more than just a repaving project, as she discussed. &nbsp;

“So not only are we improving the surface of the road, but there's also some critical infrastructure underneath that we will be taking a look at. And then from there, the surface level improvements that people will see, some lane changes, a biking walking path on the north side, and then, of course, resurfacing that whole spot” she added. &nbsp;

The detour route is to go down to 17th Avenue and across to Adams or Main depending on which way you are headed. &nbsp;The mayor explained by the detour goes down to 17th Avenue. &nbsp;

So we follow Kansas Department of Transportation guidelines when creating a detour. So that's the detour for truck traffic. If you're just a regular Joe trying to get across town, you can cut through town a number of different ways, obviously, but that is the truck traffic route.&nbsp;

The project along 30th Avenue is expected to take approximately seven weeks to complete.

Hutch Mayor talks about 30th Avenue project 

Mecha is the dog that was loose for over a year. 

 She is the sweetest girl and now prefers the inside life.  She was so relieved to finally be caught and no longer have to be on the run. Now when she goes outside, she does her business and runs right back in! 

Mecha is around 3 years old and maybe an Australian shepherd mix?  Mecha does have a high prey drive after living in the wild for so long so she will need a slow introduction to other pets. 

Mecha is spayed, fully vaccinated, and microchipped.&nbsp;

She really is such a sweet girl.  I keep hoping someone who lives out in the country will take interest.  I think she would be a perfect farm dog that also gets to come in the house. 

 She is wicked smart and savvy to the ways of the wild. Haha.  She outsmarted every animal and human that tried to catch her originally.  With the help of oral sedatives and her love of hotdogs we were able to catch her and earn her trust.

 There's no looking back now.  She's a believer that humans can show love and kindness, not just hotdogs and brisket and Christmas dinner leftovers.

🎧 BW Morning Show Interview: Chief Steven Beer and Division Chief of Operations Jeremy Unruh, Hutchinson Fire Department 

Kristen Wiens-Brubaker, a firefighter for the South Hutchinson Fire Department and Reno County District 3 Fire Department, and an EMT for Rice County EMS, is the Allen Samuels CDJR First Responder of the Month.

Wiens-Brubaker didn’t plan to be a first responder. She was going into teaching but realized it wasn’t her “cup of tea.” She is the daughter of a retired Hutchinson Fire Department captain, whom she now works with at Reno County Fire District 3 in Nickerson.

She was nominated by her husband, who is also a South Hutch firefighter and a member of the Kansas Air National Guard as a firefighter.

Wiens-Brubaker describes her typical day as getting up, getting her daughter off to school, and picking up a shift if one is available. Once she gets home at night, she could be called out if needed.

In his nomination of his wife, he says, “She is a loving, all-heart mother of a very active and beautiful little girl, a firefighter for two separate fire departments, a part-time EMT for an EMS agency that gets busier every year, and a current student in the HCC Fire Science Program,” where she is working to complete her fire science degree.

She shows dedication and commitment to her community, proving herself capable by earning the position to be in charge of the fire truck she’s on—driving any of them, suiting up in the back seat, and helping to try to save someone’s life in the back of an ambulance or at the scene of a call.

She says the highlight of the job is getting to help and meet people. She also says you have to be a people person with the drive and desire to help others.

Our Reserves fill an integral role in our patrol coverage. Reserves have the same vehicles, duties and authority as a regular deputy. They help us out during busy weekend shifts, large local events and when we just need an extra hand.

If you have driven by or visited the Zoo recently, you may have noticed the caution tape streamers hanging from the fence surrounding our deer habitat. Last week, Zoo staff reintroduced our young white-tailed doe, Cauliflower, to our herd after she recovered from an illness. The caution tape highlights the fence line for these fast-moving herbivores, giving them a clearer visual of their boundaries. If a chase ensues, they will see the fence more distinctly and slow down or change direction to avoid a collision.

Cauliflower has been away from the herd for about six months. Late last summer, our animal care staff observed her showing signs of illness, and with the help of our contract veterinarians, we developed a treatment plan. Test results showed that she had Blue Tongue Disease (BTD). It is a viral infection that primarily affects ruminants and is transmitted through the bites of midges, with a mortality rate of up to 90%.

As Cauliflower recovered from the illness, it was observed that her hooves were delaminating (peeling off in layers) because of the fever event. Our team worked closely with veterinarians and consultants from the Zoo Hoof Trim Program to address this situation quickly. She was brought into the Cargill Wildcare Center for critical care and over six months, underwent two immobilizations to clean, trim, and glue her hooves, supporting new growth. She stayed in a clean, warm environment to allow her hooves to grow back correctly and to be monitored closely by staff and vets. During that time, she received special attention and was greatly enriched. 

Thanks to the excellent care from our staff, veterinarians and hoof care consultants, Cauliflower has now made a full recovery. We are also pleased to report that she is getting reacquainted with the rest of the herd and is doing well being back in their outdoor habitat.

Hutch Zoo returns injured doe to exhibit

The We are Salthawks - Ultimate Benefit &amp; Auction returns for it's third year on Saturday, March 29 at 5:30 p.m. at the Sunflower North building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

This is the third year of the event, after it replaced the Ultimate Tailgate, which benefited the football teams.&nbsp;

"After that one ended, coach Vernon decided to let everybody know that we're going to change it all to all athletes, which it's been great," Amanda Parks, with the Hutchinson High School Booster Club said. "It's been great because we not only doubled it, we're not quite triple, but we went from I think they were raising $30,000 to $40,000 to last year we gave $87,000."

The money that is raised at the event benefits over 400 student-athletes from all athletic programs at Hutchinson High School. This list includes camps for K-12, meals for 400+ student-athletes, equipment safety and reconditioning, travel expenses, new team equipment, gear and uniforms, and student admission to events.

"You don't even have to be an alumni," Parks said. "If you just want a night out to come eat dinner and enjoy some live music, I mean you hear everybody say there is nothing to do in Hutch, there is plenty to do in Hutch and here's an example."

The event will feature dinner, live music provided by the band Save Oz, plus a <a href="https://e.givesmart.com/events/uZK/i/">silent and live auction</a> and raffle chances.&nbsp;

Hutch High Booster Club to host fundraiser March 29

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Wildflowers offer variety and color to a home landscape. In addition to eye appeal, they can survive in soils containing a wide range of chemistry pH and with varying numbers of sunny days, adding variety to garden areas.

To establish a wildflower area, Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini recommends using a regional seed blend.

“It is better to choose a blend of grasses and wildflowers rather than a single species,” Domenghini said.

When building a wildflower area, first remove existing vegetation to help wildflowers take root and grow.

“Warm-season grasses and most prairie flowers should be seeded between April 1 and May 15,” Domenghini said. “During the first year of establishment, regularly monitor and control the weed re-growth.”

Seeds will germinate best when the soil temperature is at least 60 degrees F, Domenghini said. Soil thermometers are available in most garden centers and hardware stores.

“Hand weeding can help but must be done with care to avoid uprooting small prairie flowers. Mow as high as possible to help control fast growing weeds while preserving most of the foliage on the prairie flower,” Domenghini said.

On the evening of March 21, the Rice County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Lyons Police Department and the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, conducted a saturation patrol in and around the City of Lyons.

Saturation patrols are strategic, proactive efforts designed to increase law enforcement visibility in targeted areas, disrupt criminal activity, and enhance public safety through community presence. These operations are intended to address concerns related to impaired driving, drug activity, underage alcohol possession, and other traffic and safety-related offenses.

Throughout the evening, deputies and officers conducted 56 contacts with members of the public. During these interactions, they addressed a variety of safety concerns, including drivers operating vehicles without valid licenses or insurance, individuals in possession of alcohol underage, and other violations that pose risks to public safety.

This patrol was part of our ongoing effort to serve and protect the people of Rice County through proactive, community-focused policing. We are especially grateful to the Lyons Police Department and the Barton County Sheriff’s Office for their partnership and professionalism in supporting this effort.

The Rice County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to building strong relationships within the community while actively working to reduce criminal activity and promote a safer environment for all.

Ronnie was our very first pull from death row at Wichita Shelter. He was blind and completely shut down at the shelter. 

We had a foster step up and he has been amazing with her but due to his nervous nature (being blind) he hasn't been able to be taken out for events. 

He is about 2 years old, very loveable and mellow boy. He lives with other dogs and a cat. We would recommend no children (probably teenagers ok) due to him being nervous and taking time to warm up. 

He is kennel trained, potty trained, loves to lounge in the sun or snuggle on a lap. He enjoys chewing on toys as well. 

Ronnie is just a very good boy who needs a calm patient home to give him time to open up and see the wonderful boy he is!

The City of Hutchinson will begin a roadway improvement project on W 30th Street between N Main St and N Adams starting Monday, March 24th. The project will involve the removal of the existing road, curb, and gutter on the north side of 30th Street. The road will be narrowed to create space for a new multi-use trail along the north side.

In addition to removing the old road infrastructure, crews will install a new base, asphalt pavement, curb and gutter, and pavement markings, and perform grading in the affected areas. This work will help improve both the safety and accessibility of the street for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

During construction, thru traffic will be closed between Main and Adams streets. Motorists are advised to follow the posted detour route via 17th Avenue, Monroe Street, and Main Street. Residents will have access to 30th Street, but there will be lane changes, lane reductions, and active construction in the area.

The closure of thru traffic will begin Monday, March 24th, and the project is expected to last approximately 7 weeks. Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to use caution and follow all detour signs in place during construction.

The Kansas Department of Transportation is alerting the public to a scam involving fraudulent text messages, known as smishing, that falsely claim to be from KDOT and demand payment for unpaid tolls.

Do not click on the link. It is not a KDOT website. Clicking the link in the text can expose victims to financial fraud, allowing scammers access to bank accounts and personal data.

KDOT does not collect tolls for road usage and does not send unsolicited text messages. The Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA), a separate state agency responsible for turnpike toll collection, also has been targeted in similar scams.

KDOT warns of smishing scam

The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to a house fire shortly before 4 a.m. on Friday. &nbsp;&nbsp;

When crews arrived, they found a home engulfed in flames and was threatening two nearby homes. &nbsp;Crews used Vent Enter Search operations in the home to check for injured residents, but then they fell back to a defensive attack to fight the fire and protect the two nearby homes. &nbsp;

The fire department said that they had the fire under control in approximately 90 minutes. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Crews from the public works department were brought in to assist in the removal of debris and the process of removing the victim from the home. The residence was occupied at the time of the fire by an adult victim and one dog, both were found deceased.  &nbsp;

One victim was located inside the structure. The department had to bring in a structural collapse team and special equipment to shore up a load bearing wall and chimney before they could remove the victim and complete extinguishment of the fire. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Fire department officials say that the structure is a complete loss, and the two nearby residences were damaged but remain habitual. &nbsp;

The nearby residences were occupied at the time of the fire, but there were no injuries to those residents or to the firefighters. The HFD investigator and the State Fire Marshal are on scene to determine the cause of the fire and a medical examiner from Wichita has been brought in to assist with the investigation. 

At this time, the cause of the fire remains undetermined.&nbsp;

Crews will remain on scene for multiple hours, please avoid the area. &nbsp;
