The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will begin a bridge replacement project on U.S. 56 in Rice County the week of Oct. 13. This was originally planned to start in September.

The project involves replacing a box culvert-style bridge located just south of the city of Chase, between 7th and 8th roads. The existing bridge has reached the end of its useful life and requires replacement.

The lead contractor for the $1.8 million project is Reece Construction of Salina. The project is anticipated to be completed by spring of 2026.

The Hutchinson Chapter of the NAACP will welcome Dr. Micah Kubic, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas, as their featured speaker on Thursday, Oct. 2.&nbsp; The event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Blue Dragon Room of the Hutchinson Community College Student Union.

Dr. Kubic leads the ACLU of Kansas, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and defending the constitutional rights and civil liberties of all Kansans. The organization works through the courts, the state legislature, and local communities to challenge threats to individual freedoms and to expand protections for those most at risk of discrimination or exclusion.

The ACLU of Kansas focuses on issues including reproductive rights, racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, First Amendment freedoms, immigrant rights, voting rights, criminal justice reform, and privacy rights. Its mission is to defend the rights of every individual in Kansas—regardless of race, creed, religion, gender identity, or social class.

“Our work is centered on protecting the rights of those who have traditionally been marginalized,” the organization notes, pointing to advocacy for women, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, people with disabilities, and those who are incarcerated or economically disadvantaged.

The Hutchinson NAACP chapter, which meets the first Thursday of each month, emphasizes that its gatherings are open to everyone. Members encourage the public to attend the October 2nd meeting not only to hear from Dr. Kubic, but also to learn more about how to get involved in local efforts to strengthen civil rights.

“If you have not heard Dr. Micah Kubic, now is the time,” the chapter said in its announcement.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County 911 dispatcher Melissa Sanchez admits she doesn’t always like talking about herself. But this month, she had reason to reflect after being honored as the Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram First Responder of the Month.

Sanchez, who has been with Reno County Emergency Communications for three and a half years, said the award helped her feel seen in a profession that often goes unnoticed.

“Dispatchers, we feel like we're unseen a lot, because we're forgotten a lot,” Sanchez said. “But that made me feel very opposite of that.”

Sanchez was a stay-at-home mom before applying for the job nearly four years ago. The transition required months of training and certifications, from medical and fire protocols to police call-taking and radio dispatching. Now she handles emergencies ranging from car accidents to severe weather events, often juggling multiple responsibilities in the dispatch center.

When asked how she remains calm during emergencies, Sanchez explained that her mind narrows its focus.

“My brain now, with the training I've had, kind of goes into tunnel vision when a big emergent call is on the other line,” she said. “Even if there’s a bunch of screaming in the background, I focus specifically on the words coming from the caller’s voice.”

She credits experience for honing that skill. Early on, she said, she struggled with balancing phone calls and radio traffic. Now, she can split her focus, with one side of her mind locked on the caller and the other on relaying vital information to first responders.

Despite the pressure of the job, Sanchez said what keeps her grounded is her family.

“Honestly, without my family being as supportive as they are, I don’t think I would still be here in the position I am,” Sanchez said. “It’s knowing that they talk about me so proudly. My husband, my parents, my three daughters, they understand my job isn’t easy. That makes me feel like I’m doing this for the right reason.”

Sanchez and her colleagues work 12-hour shifts covering the county’s police, fire, EMS and sheriff’s departments. On a normal day, dispatchers can field hundreds of calls. During major storms that number can multiply quickly.

Through it all, Sanchez said the recognition reinforced her commitment to the work.

“It makes me feel like I’m not wasting my time,” she said. “I’m doing this for the right reason, and it shows.”

Sanchez's nominee praised her dedication to the job.

“Melissa has won employee of the month two months in a row," the nominee said. "She scores highly on reviews, answers 911 calls in seconds, and always brings a smile to work. She’s the calm in the storm, trusted by fellow dispatchers, first responders and callers alike. People hear her empathy through the phone, and she’s guided many through CPR and life-saving situations. Reno County is lucky to have her.”

Sanchez leans on family, training in First Responder of the Month recognition

From an early age, Brianna Frank knew that caring for children was her calling. “Even when I was a kid, I knew I wanted to work with kids,”&nbsp;she shares. After high school, Frank earned her associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education at Hutchinson Community College. Her journey has taken her through multiple roles—from the Early Education Center, to a paraeducator at Union Valley Elementary School, and now into leadership with Kids Collective.

Working with toddlers,Frank cherishes the milestones—big and small—that come with early development. She works primarily with children ages 1 to 2½, and she loves watching them grow.&nbsp;“Sometimes they come in not walking or talking, and then you see them take their first steps or start singing their ABCs. It’s so exciting to see them learn something new—and even more exciting when they realize it themselves.”

Frank uses her training and classroom knowledge every day to meet the unique needs of each child. Whether helping a little one learn their colors or providing extra support for a child with additional needs, she sees every step of progress as a victory.

For Frank, childcare is about more than just supervision—it’s about shaping futures. “It’s not just watching them, it’s raising them and helping them grow. You never know what these kids can become.”

She recalls the joy of being recognized by former students outside of the classroom: “I was at an event with my son, and a little boy came up to me and said, ‘Do you remember me?’ Moments like that remind you of the impact you’ve made.”

Her commitment also extends to strengthening the broader childcare community. Frank understands the challenges families face in finding quality care—she once struggled to find childcare for her own son. That experience drives her to advocate for more awareness and support, and she often encourages others to consider careers in early childhood. “We are needed. We need so many people just to help raise children.”

The Reno County Child Care Task Force launched the Provider of the Month recognition to highlight outstanding professionals who make a difference in the lives of children and families. Frank’s dedication, leadership, and genuine love for children embody the best of early childhood education.

Three-day weather outlook 

The Hutchinson Fire Department quickly responded Saturday to a fire in the 600 block of West 13th Street, where they found a detached garage fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters reported visible flames venting through the roof upon arrival.

Crews launched an aggressive offensive attack, gaining control of the fire and containing it in a short period of time. Officials confirmed the garage was unoccupied, and no injuries were reported.

Battalion Chief Nick White commended the teamwork among responding agencies, noting the critical support provided by Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communication, Reno County EMS, Kansas Gas, Evergy, and the Hutchinson Police Department.

“The collaboration among these agencies exemplifies our community’s commitment to safety and rapid response,” the Fire Department said in a statement.

The fire’s cause and extent of damage were not immediately released.

McPHERSON — First responders were called to the McPherson Post Office early Saturday morning after reports of a possible structure fire.

At 7:45 a.m., McPherson Fire Department, McPherson EMS, and the McPherson Police Department responded to 115 E. Kansas. Upon arrival, crews confirmed the building had already been safely evacuated. Firefighters located an electrical outlet that had shorted out and burned.

A juvenile is in custody after a bomb threat temporarily shut down operations Friday morning at Hutchinson Regional Airport.

According to the Hutchinson Police Department, officers were dispatched to the airport at 8:16 a.m. on Friday, after staff reported receiving a threatening voicemail late the previous night. The caller claimed a bomb had been placed on an airplane at the airport. Investigators said the voice appeared to belong to a juvenile male.

Airport officials immediately locked down the facility and restricted both incoming and outgoing flights. Police, along with supporting agencies, conducted a comprehensive sweep of all aircraft and airport facilities. By 10:00 a.m., authorities declared the scene all clear, finding no evidence of explosives or credible threats.

Investigators were later able to identify a possible suspect, and with help from the Wichita Police Department, made contact with the juvenile and his parents in Wichita. Hutchinson officers took the suspect into custody and transported him to the Reno County Youth Shelter.

No devices were found, but police have referred charges of aggravated criminal threat to the Reno County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities emphasized that the suspect is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

The Topeka Zoo is mourning the loss of Leopold, one of its cheetahs, after an unexpected spinal injury forced the difficult decision to euthanize him.

Zoo officials shared the news in a Sept. 24 Facebook post, noting that animal care staff first observed Leopold walking tenderly on his hind legs on Sept. 18. Despite rest and treatment, his condition worsened, leading to further testing. A CT scan at Topeka ER revealed a fractured vertebra that would have required corrective surgery.

Leopold was transferred to a specialty veterinary center for additional imaging and treatment. However, an MRI and subsequent surgical evaluation revealed the damage was too severe to repair. “The surgical team discovered at that time that the damage to his spine could not be repaired, and the humane decision was made to euthanize him,” the zoo said.

The exact cause of the injury remains unclear. Surveillance footage showed Leopold appearing alert and excited by outside activity in his habitat the day before staff noticed his condition. He was later observed walking away with visible discomfort. The zoo believes he may have fallen or landed improperly, but obstructions in the video prevented confirmation of the exact incident.

Zoo staff and visitors alike are grieving the loss. “Losing Leopold is tragic and he will be deeply missed. He was a neat cat who very quickly stole the hearts of many,” said Wrylie Guffey, the zoo’s animal care director.

The zoo has adjusted Leopold’s enclosure to reduce the risk of similar accidents in the future and has shifted its focus to supporting Roosevelt, Leopold’s brother.

The Greater Wichita YMCA has announced a major partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) aimed at advancing community health and wellness programs across Central Kansas. As part of the collaboration, BCBSKS has committed a $2 million gift to support YMCA initiatives, including the capital campaign for the new Hutchinson YMCA.

The contribution builds on the organizations’ longstanding partnership and underscores their shared mission to improve community well-being and address the needs of vulnerable populations. The YMCA operates 12 branches across Sedgwick, Harvey, Reno, McPherson, and Butler counties.

“At Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, we believe that health isn’t just about doctor visits—it’s about access to programs and resources that help people live richer lives,” said Matt All, BCBSKS President and CEO. “By partnering with the Greater Wichita YMCA, we’re helping to create a community space where people feel connected, supported and inspired to live their best lives. We’re proud to invest in a future where health and well-being are within reach for everyone.”

The funding will support a wide range of YMCA programs, including nutrition classes, free chronic disease support such as LIVESTRONG at the YMCA for cancer survivors, the Parkinson’s Support Program, and the SPLASH! water-safety initiative for second graders. In addition, the gift will directly bolster the Hutchinson YMCA project—a 75,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility scheduled to open in 2026.

YMCA leaders say the new Hutchinson branch, developed in partnership with Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, will serve as the “front door of health care in Reno County.”

HUTCHINSON – Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System is inviting area residents to take part in a free prostate cancer screening event at the Chalmers Cancer Center later this month.

The event is set for Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to noon at the Chalmers Cancer Center, located at 1701 E. 23rd Avenue in Hutchinson.

The screenings will include a PSA blood test, digital rectal exam (DRE), and educational resources. The program is recommended for men ages 50 and older, those with a family history of prostate cancer, or individuals who have not had a PSA test in the past six months.

Organizers emphasize that early detection is key. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men, and identifying it early can significantly increase treatment options and survival rates.

The screenings are confidential, quick, and offered at no cost.

Hutchinson Regional to host free prostate cancer screening event Saturday

A crowd of more than 200 people packed into the 11861 Club at the Kansas State Fairgrounds Thursday evening for the inaugural Spark Tank Live! event, hosted by United Way of Reno County. The night proved to be both inspiring and impactful, raising over $40,000 to support the organization’s annual campaign.

Funds raised will not only help sustain United Way’s ongoing nonprofit grant programs but also ensure the continuation of Spark Tank Live! next year, giving more local organizations the chance to compete for funding.

Four nonprofits took the stage to pitch their programs, vying for a share of $20,000 in prize money: •&nbsp; 1st Place: Food Bank of Reno County ($10,000 grant) •&nbsp;&nbsp;2nd Place: Milestone Clubhouse ($7,500 grant) •&nbsp;&nbsp;3rd Place: Wisdom in Motion ($5,000 grant) •&nbsp; 4th Place: Rise Up Reno Prevention Network ($2,500 grant)

The Food Bank of Reno County walked away with double honors, also winning the People’s Choice Award, and received an additional $1,500 grant to add to their total support for the evening.

United Way leaders said they were thrilled with the turnout and the generosity of the community. “What a night—we are still reeling over what an inspiring evening it was,” they shared in a statement.

TOPEKA — Governor Laura Kelly announced Thursday that Kansas will apply for funding through the $50 billion federal Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP), aimed at strengthening access to care in rural communities amid looming federal Medicaid cuts.

The program, created under H.R. 1, comes as many Kansas hospitals—already facing financial strain—confront additional challenges from reductions in Medicaid funding.

“We are committed to ensuring that rural Kansans have access to high-quality, affordable health care near their homes,” Kelly said. “Though these funds will not fully offset federal cuts, they will allow the state to make fundamental changes to protect access to care in communities where hospitals are at risk of closure.”

Of the $50 billion available nationwide, $25 billion will be divided evenly among states with approved applications. The remaining half will be distributed based on criteria outlined by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Kansas’ application is due by November 5, with funding announcements expected by December 31. Grants will be distributed over a five-year period.

To oversee the application process, Kelly is forming the Kansas Rural Health Innovation Alliance, a stakeholder group that will guide development of the state’s proposal and implementation of its initiatives. The University of Kansas Health System Care Collaborative, a rural health provider network, will partner with the state to coordinate efforts and host an informational webinar on September 29 at 9 a.m.

Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Janet Stanek praised the collaboration. “This will help ensure a strategic approach to this five-year funding opportunity,” she said.

Kansas Department for Children and Families Secretary Laura Howard added that engaging the Alliance will “ensure Kansas’ proposal meets the needs of rural Kansans and providers.”

Kelly emphasized that while the funding cannot undo federal reductions, it represents an opportunity to reimagine how care is delivered in underserved areas. “This is about building a stronger, more resilient rural health care system for the future,” she said.
