HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners approved a resolution last fall to put to the people the question of removing&nbsp;the required 30% food sales requirement for liquor by the drink.

Sandhills Brewery had an issue with their liquor license this last time around as just weeks before their deadline they had not sold enough food to maintain compliance.&nbsp; 

Pippin Williamson, owner of Sandhills was before the commission last fall requesting the vote after a herculean effort by the community of $42,000 in food in just five days got enough food purchased for this renewal.

The election November 7 is a city and school board election and those traditionally have lower turnout numbers.

Reminder: Change in liquor law on November ballot

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of Reno County Commissioners will look at a potential Request for Proposal for ways to spend the county's share of the opioid settlement at its meeting on Wednesday.&nbsp;

According to agenda documents, over 100,000 people died as a result of the overdose epidemic from September 2020 to September 2021. 

Approximately 75,000 of those deaths involved opioids, most of which were due to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. Settlements have been reached with several opioid distributors and outline core abatement strategies to address the opioid crisis. 

Given the short-term nature of the funds, prioritization is given to fading projects in need of one-time or start-up costs.

In order to best meet the needs of our community, the Reno County Health Department has convened a committee. After notifying the county commission of this committee in January, the Opioid Settlement Funds Advisory Oversight Committee, made up of a variety of community stakeholders who have looked at the data available for Reno County, identified goals and measures of success for the City of Hutchinson and Reno County as a whole as well as identified the abatement strategies that should be prioritized. 

This committee is tasked with making sure that the Reno County Fights Addiction Fund is spent in a way that saves lives from prescription opioid misuse and illicit opioid use, while also coming alongside efforts currently happening within Reno County.

The Board of County Commissioners meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the Veterans Room at the Reno County Courthouse.

Board of County Commissioners looks at RFP for opioid funds Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson is looking forward to the next meeting of the facility steering committee on Monday.

"We started this about January of last year and we led it up through May," Johnson said. "We meet every month, about 50 community members and employees in the district. It's been a great group. It's just been looking at stuff. We're working with Schaefer Architecture. They have some committees in each of the buildings. They have met with those smaller committees twice to talk about what their needs are. All of the information that we're just learning about our district in the past six months and putting together ideas,&nbsp;Schaefer Architecture has worked on over the summer, to draw up some plans and bring those back."

It is a challenge to figure out how best to use existing facilities in a reducing enrollment environment, rather than trying to build anything new.

"What are the options, what are the possibilities, what are the hopes and dreams that we've heard from our community, from our committee, other things that we've done to survey our patrons," Johnson said. "We're focusing on hopes and dreams. Where do we want to be in the future? Now, we're going to start working on what those possibilities are, with a presentation for a master facility plan to be presented to the board in March of this coming year."

One major decision already made was that to close Lincoln Elementary and combine with McCandless Elementary. That was prompted by an inability to hire teaching staff more than by facilities concerns.

City Planning Commission canceled for Tuesday

Nineteen new law enforcement officers, including Kyle Spencer from the Hutchinson Police Department, graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on August 18, 2023 in a ceremony held in KLETC's Integrity Auditorium. KLETC Police Instructor Senior Rob McClarty was the class coordinator for the graduating class, and the commencement speaker for the ceremony was Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson.

President Masterson was quick to express his gratitude to the graduates. "I don't find it difficult to say 'thank you' to people I admire. First, congratulations and thank you. You are about to get into an area where the job can be thankless even though every Kansan should be thankful for what you do." Masterson had one ask of the graduating class, and that was to serve with humility. "Humility is such a misunderstood term in today's society. Humility is strength under control. It's authority without abuse. It's power without having to abuse it."

Under the authority of Executive Director Darin Beck, graduates received certificates attesting to the satisfactory completion of a full-time basic course of instruction, and certification as Kansas Law enforcement officers from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training, the state's law enforcement licensing authority.

STRATACA among Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice winners

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The state of Kansas is in relatively good position compared to other states when it comes to gas prices, according to Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas.&nbsp;

"We're at 14th cheapest in the country," Steward said. "Not as cheap as we usually are, but we're at $3.63 a gallon on average. That's down three cents in the past week."

Local prices are mostly on the low side of the average.

"If you look at where we were a month ago, we were almost 40 cents less," Steward said. "We were at about $3.25 a month ago. We have seen an uptick throughout the summer and a little bit of relief in the past week. Overall, the trends have been kind of interesting to look at this summer. We've had a pretty strong summer driving season."

The underlying cost of crude continues to be the driving factor in pump price increases.

"Crude oil prices have really been the major story over the past couple of months," Steward said. "Those have stayed pretty high. Crude oil was down below $80 a barrel as of Friday morning. That's down about $3 from where we were a week ago."

Steward noted that drops in prices seem to take longer to take effect than increases, especially when there are supply concerns, like in the case of hurricanes that temporarily shut down refining capacity.

AAA: Gas prices still lower in Kansas than much of the country

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The unemployment rate in Reno County rose for the month of July 2023.

According to the Kansas Department of Labor, the jobless rate for the county went up two tenths of one percent to 3.4%. The jobless rate for the same period in 2022 was 3.6%.

There were 999 county residents out of work.&nbsp;

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate statewide of 2.7% in July. This is a decrease from 2.8% in June and unchanged from 2.7% in July 2022.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 2,000 from June. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 1,500 over the month, while government increased by 500.

Since July 2022 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 23,100. This change is due to an increase of 18,700 private sector jobs and an increase of 4,400 government jobs.

Unemployment up in Reno County in July

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Police and Sheriff's officers in Hutchinson and Reno County are accepting donations Friday morning to help out Special Olympics.

"It's just us wanting to build relationships, period," said Andrew Soule with the Reno County Sheriff's Office. "We always look to those vulnerable populations. Those are the ones we always want to reach out to and build those relationships with. These are always great opportunities for us to get out and be seen and not only talk to athletes and those involved in the Special Olympics movement, but to talk to anyone in the city of Hutchinson, in Reno County and anyone else that may be traveling through."

The fundraiser is at Dunkin Donuts at 1533 East 17th from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

"This one isn't a give back event," Soule said. "This one is strictly donation based. If you have some leftover change after getting your morning coffee or morning breakfast, we would greatly appreciate it."

Dunkin has done this fundraiser for several years, but this is the first time for the Hutchinson location.

Water to be shut off in part of Nickerson Saturday

RENO COUNTY — The Reno County Sheriff's Office is seeking information on cattle that went missing earlier this month.

According to a social media post, on Monday, Aug. 7, 2023,&nbsp;Circle H Cattle Company reported 15 400 to 500 pound calves stolen from the area of US 50 and Sterling Road. 

The cattle went missing sometime between July 29th and August 6th.

KINGMAN, Kan. — IdeaTek is expanding its popular ultra-fast fiber internet to Kingman residents and businesses. This expansion will give more than 1,500 households access to gigabit speeds at affordable prices.

Construction began in the north half of the city earlier this summer. Residential installs are expected in early fall.

Unlike conventional cable providers, IdeaTek fiber internet maintains consistent performance, even during peak hours, without data caps or throttling. The company also does not require contracts.

IdeaTek will have an informational meeting about the project at 7 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Livingston Family Center, 1830 N. Main, Kingman. Refreshments will be served, and the IdeaTek team will be on hand to answer questions about service plans and the construction process.

RENO COUNTY — The Reno County Health Department will be offering an orientation class for those interested in becoming a childcare provider.

Childcare provider class Sept. 7

KINGMAN, Kan. — The 2nd Annual Kingman County Strong Color Run for Suicide Prevention is Saturday, Sept. 23 at Riverside Park in Kingman. Check in is at 7 a.m., the race starts at 8 a.m.

The race itself is free, but they are seeking sponsorships to help fund the Kingman County Mental Health HOPE Kit Project. Kits will be distributed to Kingman County schools, medical clinics, law enforcement agencies and the health department.

Last year, they had over 500 participants.

Kingman County Color Run next month

KINGMAN COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 6 p.m. Thursday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Harley Davidson driven by&nbsp; Brian Scott&nbsp;Kersting, 65, Cheney, was westbound on U.S. 54 just west of NE 150 Avenue.&nbsp;

The motorcycle sideswiped a 2015 Chevy Silverado driven by Daniel Alexander Clark, 38, Kingman, that was stopped&nbsp;on the right shoulder and pulled into the lane of traffic.

EMS transported Kersting and a passenger Melinda Kersting, 66, Cheney, to Wesley Medical Center. Clark was not injured and properly restrained, according to the KHP.

 </figure>KINGMAN COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 6 p.m. Thursday in Kingman County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Harley Davidson driven by&nbsp; Brian Scott&nbsp;Kersting, 65, Cheney, was westbound on U.S. 54 just west of NE 150 Avenue.&nbsp;The motorcycle sideswiped a 2015 Chevy Silverado driven by Daniel Alexander Clark, 38, Kingman, that was stopped&nbsp;on the right shoulder and pulled into the lane of traffic.EMS transported Kersting and a passenger Melinda Kersting, 66, Cheney, to Wesley Medical Center. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Beam recognized Hutchinson headquartered AgTrax, as one of the distinguished 2023 Kansas Ag Heroes Honorable Mentions at the 2023 Governor’s Summit on Agricultural Growth. The summit was held this week at the Manhattan Conference Center.

Kansas Ag Heroes was established as a way to recognize those in the agriculture industry who have gone above and beyond to serve others and better their community. Nominations are received in the summer prior to the Ag Growth Summit, and KDA leadership reviews each nomination and recognizes a select number of agriculture heroes during the Kansas Governor’s Summit on Agricultural Growth.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Open auditions will be taking place for Stage 9's fall tradition on Thursday, August 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, August 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This year, there are roles for five men and five women. No experience is necessary. There wil be flexible one-on-one rehearsals for those who are selected.

The office is currently at 924 North Main and will be at 111 North Walnut, Suite B starting Monday, August 21.

United Way has eight staff, four full-time and four part-time. The Reno Connections person will remain at the Hutchinson Public Library, to better serve those who need those services.

United Way office closed Friday to move

BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler Public Schools and the Buhler Frolic are working together to host a 5K and One Mile Walk at the Buhler Frolic this year on Saturday, October 7th. 

They are inviting all interested to be a part, whether you are a runner, jogger, walker, or walker and talker.

The&nbsp;5K, which will start at 8 a.m., will be a course designed in and around Buhler, starting and ending at Prairie Bank of Kansas, 200 N Main St.&nbsp;At the end of the ceremony, organizers will acknowledge the top three runners and recognize them with a gift.

The One-Mile will stretch down Main Street from Prairie Bank of Kansas to Buhler Grade School and back to PBK and start at 8:45 a.m.&nbsp;

Funds from the event will support the Buhler Schools wellness program. Registration is just $20.
