HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 2024 Reno County Economic Outlook Conference examines the economy of the state as a whole but Debra Teufel, President and CEO of Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce covered much of the recent impact the economy had and could potentially have locally. Teufel closed out the conference as the last speaker on Feb. 6 at the Crystal Ballroom at the Burt.&nbsp;

Teufel highlighted Hutchinson Community College's impact to help students secure jobs in the workforce in Reno County. According to Teufel's presentation, the unemployment rate in Reno falls slightly above 3.0%. She also referenced a report from a few years ago that says 16,698 people live and work in Reno County.&nbsp;

"We are doing a better job than any other community I know in matching people to jobs and making sure that they are trained," Teufel said. "We have the best career technical education academy right here. We are recognizing those students through signing day that are signing up for technical careers and then we are making sure we are getting them into apprenticeships."

Teufel's presentation included statistics from surveys regarding the employee skill needed locally and the primary issues impacting employee attraction and retention to locally.&nbsp;

"This is the very reason that we embark on things like the Career Quest program, and a working partnership with the Boys and Girls Club on ethic skills because 48% of you and another 33% said soft skills and basic skills are what you need for those employees to come in the door and train on aptitude," Teufel said. "But you need them to have a good attitude when they walk in the door so we are going to continue to do that and do those programs and make sure that we are vetting those soft skills in these young people."&nbsp;

Teufel said that the lack of reliable child care and housing availability and affordability are the top two issues that are turning people away from jobs in the county.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"When we get into what is happening in our population and our population is declining, a big part of that is the result of a couple of factors on this screen," Teufel said at the conference. "Thirty one percent said access to reliable child care then another 20% when you combine housing availability and housing affordability,&nbsp; 20% said that those two issues are holding you back from attracting employees."&nbsp;

Hutch Chamber CEO reports on local economic impact 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The state championships for scholars bowl to be contested Saturday will generally go through the Hutch Post area.

Hutchinson High School is hosting 5A, McPherson Middle School hosts 4A, Moundridge is hosting 2A and Central Christian in Hutchinson is hosting 1A Division II.&nbsp;

Of those hosts, Central Christian and Moundridge's teams also qualified for their state meet.

Other area schools to qualify include Pratt (4A) Cunningham (1A-II) Goessel, (1A-1) Little River, (1A-1) Hesston (3A) , Trinity Catholic (2A) and Sterling (2A).

Hutch Post area schools hosting scholars bowl events

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. — Bluestem U, a lifelong learning program for individuals age 55 and better, is enrolling now for its spring 2024 semester that will begin in March. Bluestem U is a partnership between local higher education institutions Bethel College and Hesston College and Bluestem Communities, a nonprofit organization that serves seniors through various living options and care-centered services.

The spring 2024 semester will feature three course. Each course is $50. More information and registration can be found at bluestemu.org. All members of the public age 55 and better are welcome to be a part of Bluestem U, and do not need to have affiliation with any of the sponsoring organizations.

“Diversity in American theatre” will be taught by Lauren Friesen, a retired theatre professor. The course will focus on material from the Colonial era to the late 1800’s, and identify major playwrights, plays, important topics, notable actors and the controversies that frequently arose from theatrical ventures. “Diversity in American theatre” is a five-week course beginning March 18 that will be held on Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon in the Kaye Penner Education Center at Kidron Bethel Village, North Newton.

“When ‘Just Do It’ doesn’t work!” will be taught by Kevin Wilder, a former Hesston College psychology and Bible instructor and current Bluestem Communities Director of Fund Advancement for Schowalter Villa. The course will look at performance psychology and the study of techniques to improve our ability to accomplish tasks. Each session will blend theory, discussion and practice of a different method of performance psychology. “When ‘Just Do It’ doesn’t work!” is a five-week course beginning March 21 that will be held on Thursdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Schowalter Villa Chapel, Hesston.

“Climate Change: Hope, Effective Action and Climate Justice” will be taught by Dwight Krehbiel, a current psychology professor at Bethel College. The course will explore priorities in addressing climate change and examine individuals’ own roles in its impact. “Climate Change” is a six-week course beginning April 2 that will be held on Tuesdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Kaye Penner Education Center at Kidron Bethel Village.

In this key leadership role, Mr. Sotelo will be responsible for driving strategic initiatives that contribute to the overall well-being of our community. The position involves collaboration with diverse stakeholders, including other city departments, community leaders, businesses, and external partners.

Sotelo now Director of Strategic Growth

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Oliver! is a stage musical, with book, music and lyrics by Lionel Bart. The musical is based upon the 1838 novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. 

Oliver! is taking the stage at the Family Community Theatre starting Thursday.

"The story is set in about 1838 in London," said Craig Williams with Family Community Theatre. "A young boy who has grown up in the workhouse begins an adventure, where he is taken away from the workhouse, sold to an undertaker. That doesn't work out. He runs away from there, ends up in London and there he meets a young man by the name of the Artful Dodger, who is a pickpocket. The Artful Dodger takes him to meet his boss, Fagin. He's a fencer and a criminal himself. What he does is introduce Oliver to the life of crime. Oliver gets caught, not of his doing. He is caught with a group of pickpockets by a man by the name of Brownlow. Brownlow then finds out that he really didn't pick his pocket. It was somebody else. He takes Oliver in. All of this is going on with the undercurrent of the criminal element in London at that time. One of the worst criminals that is portrayed in the show is Bill Sikes. He is just evil personified. Another part of the gang is,.who grew up with Fagin, or grew up in his tutelage, is Nancy. Nancy takes a liking to Oliver and tries to protect him and get him out of the clutches of Fagin, so that he will not grow up in that same kind of environment. Eventually, that's what happens."&nbsp; 

Performances are at Memorial Hall February 15-18. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the curtain is at 7:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon's matinee is at 3 p.m.

Oliver! is taking the stage at the Family Community Theatre starting Thursday."The story is set in about 1838 in London," said Craig Williams with Family Community Theatre. "A young boy who has grown up in the workhouse begins an adventure, where he is taken away from the workhouse, sold to an undertaker. That doesn't work out. He runs away from there, ends up in London and there he meets a young man by the name of the Artful Dodger, who is a pickpocket. The Artful Dodger takes him to meet his boss, Fagin. He's a fencer and a criminal himself. What he does is introduce Oliver to the life of crime. Oliver gets caught, not of his doing. He is caught with a group of pickpockets by a man by the name of Brownlow. Brownlow then finds out that he really didn't pick his pocket. It was somebody else. He takes Oliver in. All of this is going on with the undercurrent of the criminal element in London at that time. One of the worst criminals that is portrayed in the show is Bill Sikes. He is just evil personified. Another part of the gang is,.who grew up with Fagin, or grew up in his tutelage, is Nancy. Nancy takes a liking to Oliver and tries to protect him and get him out of the clutches of Fagin, so that he will not grow up in that same kind of environment. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council held an executive session on City Manager matters at their meeting on Tuesday with no action taken, but Mayor Greg Fast told Hutch Post on Monday that they are remaining focused on getting someone permanent in place.

"It's a process," Fast said. "We want to be sure we get it right. We're a town of over 40,000 people. I think we deserve the right person and we're going to take our time until we get the right person. Mary Grace is doing a terrific job. I think the culture is turning around."

Fast said the executive session would talk about specific applicants, but nothing from that is required to be made public, in an effort to protect those who don't get the job.

"I want to get this done, because it makes our jobs easier as a council, if we get somebody in place," Fast said. "You know, we're spending a lot of time interviewing people. It's moving forward. We will find the right person for Hutchinson."

In the meantime, Interim City Manager Mary Grace Clements is moving forward with actions like hiring the city's new Airport Director, so that the new person, whomever it is, has some momentum.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Meteorologists from the National Weather Service office in Wichita will be presenting information that will help prepare storm spotters and weather enthusiasts for the upcoming storm season in Hutchinson on Thursday.

"We'll talk about different types of storms, different parts of a storm, different features on the storm, how severe they can be," said Acting Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the Wichita NWS Office, Vanessa Pearce. "Looking for some of those different features to determine their severity. Also, weather safety, what to do and how to respond if you see these type of storms."

Thursday's event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the&nbsp;Fire Command and Training Center at 3201 E. 4th Ave.

Storm spotter meeting Thursday

HUTCHINSON — Jeremy Hill, Director of Center for Economic Development and Business Research for Wichita State University, used the layers of an onion to analyze the Kansas economy at the 2024 Reno County Economic Outlook Conference. Hill presented on Tuesday morning, Feb. 6 at Crystal Ballroom at the Burt.&nbsp;

He started off his presentation with the "outer layer" of the onion by assessing the current economic environment in Kansas which contained four parts. They were gross domestic product and corporate profits, employee cost, inflation and a survey of expenditure minimization (EMP) conditions.

Hill reported that 2023 has been a strong year for Kansas economically. Kansas added 39,500 jobs and the economy expanded 2.3%.

"We know if we've had failed surges, we aren't going to find a whole lot of people," Hill said. "So we've kind of gotten to this state of saying, that's still a positive economy even though most people aren't staying the same. This is more of we are an expanding economy, I just can't find the people."&nbsp;

Statistics regarding the Kansas labor force did not show as much growth. In 2023, the estimation for expansion was 3.0% with 1,518,584 labor force workers in 2023. It is forecasted at 3.0% in 2024 with 1,524,614 people in the labor force.

"We want a lot more than 3.0%," Hill said. "This is where we feel there are a lot of costs on the labor side, right? We are feeling that labor is costing a whole lot. However, add inflation into this and say what's going on with inflation? This is the middle ground. At the US level that means labor's actually cheaper. So all that we are complaining about on the sticker shock, is that it is getting more expensive. However, the reality based on inflation, is actually getting cheaper. And guess what? It's getting even more cheaper here in the midwest."

Jeremy Hill explains layers of Kansas economy

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson announced Tuesday the selection of Alek Stang as the new Airport Director for Hutchinson Regional Airport. 

With a diverse background in aviation and a proven record of leadership, Mr. Stang brings invaluable expertise to this pivotal role.

A native of Wichita, Mr. Stang's passion for aviation was fostered by his family's involvement in the industry. After graduating from Eastern Kentucky University with a BS in Aerospace Management and a minor in business, along with a private pilot license, Mr. Stang embarked on a varied career journey. His experience includes serving in the U.S. Army as a UH-60 Blackhawk mechanic and crew chief, working as a government contractor for Lockheed Martin, and serving as a ground operations supervisor for Southwest Airlines at Dallas Love Field. Most recently, Mr. Stang served as the Operations Manager at Newton City/County Airport in Kansas, where he thrived under the mentorship of Brian Palmer.

In his new capacity as Airport Director, Alek Stang will oversee Hutchinson Regional Airport, a crucial gateway to the Hutchinson community. Tasked with driving economic development, ensuring safety, and enhancing the passenger experience, Mr. Stang will lead the airport into a future marked by innovation and excellence. Reporting directly to City Manager Mary Grace Clements, Mr. Stang will be responsible for strategic planning, budget management, staff development, and community engagement.

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — Following an incident in January, an investigation was initiated by the McPherson County Sheriff’s Office in reference to the introduction of contraband into the McPherson County Jail and distributing the contraband to an inmate(s). 

During the investigation, Cheyenne Ratley, who was a McPherson County Corrections Deputy at the time of the incident, was identified as a suspect. 

Ratley has been arrested and charged with Introduction of Contraband into a Correctional Institution by a Correctional Officer and is currently awaiting extradition back to Kansas.

Former McPherson County corrections deputy arrested

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the 2023-24 school year, Heartland Credit Union has awarded $3,800 total for 10 projects through its Celebrate Academic Success with HCU (CASH) Grants.&nbsp;Stephanie Suppes, Third Grade Teacher at Wiley Elementary School, was awarded a $400 grant to benefit her classroom with OzoBots for Coding.

Suppes said, “The OzoBots follow basic instructions given to them with colored markers on paper. The OzoBots have cameras on the bottom of them that distinguish the different colors and tell them what to do. The students can use them in a variety of ways, in the classroom. We are excited to explore with these fun little robots.”

The Wiley Elementary School Library also has a set of OzoBots. “Last year we created huge paths for them that went around the classroom and into the hall. Students are able to have fun and learn coding at the same time”, she continued.

OzoBots support teachers in the classroom by providing pacing guides and lessons for all grade levels and all subject matter.

With this grant, Suppes will purchase a set of the bots for use in her classroom.

Wiley Elementary teacher wins grant

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — 2023 was a great year for HFD. We moved into new Fire Station #1 on North Main. We received our new Truck 1 - 100’ ladder truck. We brought back one of the most important positions on the department, the Fire Engineer. We ended the year with a promotional pinning ceremony where 27 members were recognized and promoted to a new rank. 

2023 was capped off with The Hutchinson Fire Department’s 6th annual awards banquet, held on January 27th, 2024. The department gathered with friends and family to show appreciation to our members for their dedication and hard work. 

Every year to show our appreciation, our department recognizes personnel in outside departments that have assisted us in reaching our goals. 

Receiving a letter of appreciation: Kelly Kreutzer and Julie Graves from the City of Hutchinson Human Resources department. Kevin Irwin and Stacie Eaves from Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications. Rodney Redinger from the Kansas Forest Service. Rick Spitler from the City of Hutchinson Central Garage.

Hutch Fire gives out awards

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A spark from welding at a Kansas car dealership caused a fire on Monday.

At 5:45p.m., crews responded to the fire at Lubbers, 944 North Main Street in Cheney,&nbsp;according to Fire Chief Jerry Peitz.&nbsp;&nbsp;Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles around. Crews worked quickly to keep the fire from reaching cars on the lot and had the fire contained at approximately 6:18p.m.

The welding on a forklift was being done in a back room where fluids, cleaners and other equipment are stored, according to Peitz.&nbsp;

Due to the amount of expensive diagnostic equipment and engines in the storage area, it is difficult for investigators to estimate a damage amount. There was also significant smoke damage in the bay area where techs work.

One dealership employee was treated for smoke inhalation, according to Peitz.&nbsp; There were no other injuries. A fire crew from Sedgwick County also responded to assist.

Thousands of dollars in damage after fire at Cheney car dealership

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Phil Nightingale presented to the Hutchinson City Council on what he sees his needs as right now to make the fairgrounds race track work for the 2024 racing season. He started by giving the council an economic impact study done for him by the state.

"If we put 2,061 people in the stands, they say in the impact study that $146,398 would impact our area community,"&nbsp;Nightingale said. "It seems like a big number to me, but that's their numbers. I always say, let's cut it in half and see what that's like, so if it's $70,000 per event, we're going to have between eight and nine events depending on weather."

Below is the tentative schedule, as the final contract is due for signatures next week.

"We're going to have an event July 19 and 20,"&nbsp;Nightingale said. "We're bringing in the Silver Crown Sprint Cars. That should bring a big, huge crowd. We're already getting a lot of response from people that say they are coming. I would like to see if we could make sure we have enough police support down there around that area, around those two days. The first couple of events, I hope, for what the community has reached out trying to save the track, I think there will be a huge crowd at some of those events. I think at our first event, maybe our first two, there might be some deal."

Nightingale also asked about using city equipment to help maintain the track. Interim City Manager Mary Grace Clements wants to talk to city staff about what they might be able to do or not do, and Nightingale is also going to ask the county, as well as some local businesses for help with equipment for maintenance as well.

"The response we're getting is huge right now," Nightingale said. "The proof's going to be in the pudding. How many people sit in the stands?"

That still remains to be seen, as the racing community has come solidly behind the track saving effort, but without the general public who doesn't have a rooting interest deciding it's worth spending a night out, it will be a challenge.

Marketing workshop ongoing at Cosmosphere

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College's amphitheater and "green space" is ready for its students, faculty and the Hutch community to use.&nbsp;The total budget for the project was $1.8 million according to Denny Stoecklein, director of marketing and public relations at HutchCC.

HutchCC President Dr. Carter File said Prairie Landworks Inc. took the construction fence down at the end of the 2023 fall semester in December. He said full use of the green space has been open for about a month.&nbsp;

"We finished the courtyard, between Lockman Hall and the Student Union," File said. "We finished what we call the green space and obviously we have the amphitheater here and we have some pickleball courts, and you know we have a great view of the stadium and it just blends in very nicely with the pond that was already here."

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/a392fd70-fcc7-450d-9e93-79aea02c3436">The constructed amphitheater</a> and green space, is located between Lockman Hall, Speare Hall and Gowans Stadium. Tables, benches and a fully renovated space for food truck hookups have also been added since Hutch Post visited the site in September.

The "green space" also features a courtyard garden area that will be in bloom come spring and summer time. File said the garden will be taken care of by the K-State Reno County Extension Master Gardeners.&nbsp;

Pickleball courts which are a part of the new space, were constructed during the summer of 2023. File said the pickleball courts have been full of students lately.&nbsp;

"Well I think for the community and the college, I think it's nice that we were able to get this completed and replace the tennis courts that were here," File said. "You know the tennis courts were fine, they just weren't utilized very well, and there were significant maintenance costs on those so we decided that this would be a better use of this space. Not only for our college students, but also for the community at large."

File said the amphitheater hasn't been used for any community events yet and there aren't any planned at this time. However, he said he hopes that word will get out that the space is ready to use. He also mentioned the idea of having the space be a part of one of the Hutch Rec's Third Thursday events.&nbsp;

"You know as time proceeds, we hope that our faculty, especially our fine arts faculty, will find time to use this, to bring students out here," File said. Maybe even for practices. And then it's open to the public if somebody wants to have a public forum, they are welcome to use it."&nbsp;

HutchCC green space and amphitheater ready to go

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire Chief Steven Beer has been in Hutchinson almost seven years now, having joined the department in April of 2017, following the retirement of Kim Forbes. He is pleased with the progress the agency has made over those years.

"I think we've been able to have a positive impact on our organization, the community, our neighboring partners that we work with throughout the county," Beer said. "It's all about tearing down walls and building bridges. That's the mindset that we all have, is to do that. Being internationally accredited, being an ISO Class I Fire Department, I think those are some of the draws for some of these younger individuals."

Having a healthy department also includes staffing.

"I'm happy to say, we have zero openings," Beer said. "That's a good thing for the community and for us when we have that. That doesn't happen overnight. You've got to change that culture. You've got to change that culture. It takes years to do that. I think we're in a good spot right now as an organization."

Part of that is the use of data to make decisions on where to put resources so that response times can continue to get shorter as materials in homes become more and more flammable.

"We're a totally data-driven organization," Beer said. "That's what I like to do. I just submitted the final year end report for 2023 to the city council here this week. We had a problem with some software, actually extracting the data out of the system, but we finally got everything put together. My job is to make sure the council has the data to make informed decisions. I want to try to take the emotions out of the equation when they try to make a decision."

The call data from the department is what drove locating the new large fire station at 23rd and Main.

Beer: Agency progress is a positive

WICHITA, Kan. — The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center passed its most-recent inspection by the Office of Inspector General (OIG) with no findings requiring corrective action, a first in the history of the medical center. Officials from Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 15 - Dole VA’s regional headquarters that oversees VA hospitals and clinics spread across four states - report it is the first time in at least 10 years one of its medical centers has accomplished this.

The OIG’s Comprehensive Healthcare Inspection Program (CHIP) is one element of the OIG’s overall efforts to ensure the nation’s Veterans receive high-quality and timely VA health care services. The OIG inspects each facility approximately every three years and selects and evaluates specific areas of focus each year. At the time of this inspection, the OIG focused on core processes in the following five areas of clinical and administrative operations:

5. Mental health (focusing on suicide prevention initiatives)

The OIG initiated the unannounced inspection of the Dole VA Medical Center during the week of March 6, 2023, releasing&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vaoig.gov/sites/default/files/reports/2024-01/vaoig-23-00014-65.pdf" target="_blank">its final report</a>&nbsp;on Feb. 1, 2024. No recommendations for improvement related to the areas reviewed were issued.

“VHA’s mission is to honor America’s Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being,” said Ashley Lunkenheimer, chief of Dole VA’s quality management department. “Dole VA was privileged to be independently, thoroughly, and objectively surveyed by OIG, who works to ensure we not only meet the standard but rise above it and cultivate a place of health care that Veterans can trust.”

The OIG’s report concluded the “medical center’s FY 2022 inpatient satisfaction survey scores indicated patients were more satisfied with the care they received” at Dole VA when compared to VHA patients nationally and that “scores also indicated patients were satisfied with their primary and specialty care experiences.”

“This remarkable achievement highlights each staff member’s commitment to excellence,” said Michael Payne, Dole VA Medical Center Director. “It is our greatest honor to serve this Nation’s Veterans. They deserve the remarkable level of care we provide at Dole VA.”

Dole VA shines in IG inspection
