After a long battle with stomach cancer, country music superstar Toby Keith passed away at age 62 on Feb. 6th, 2024. Country 102.9's Pat James talked with one of Toby's longtime tour truck drivers, Robert Law of Wichita, about Keith's career, how they met, and his battle with cancer.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Erica Miller, DVM is still the only full time veterinarian at Apple Lane Animal Hospital. That means that for the time being, she still needs people to schedule out their pets regular checkups a little farther than they might otherwise.

"Clients do get reminders a month before their appointment," Miller said. "If you're calling when you get your reminder, you're going to get scheduled for the day your reminder says your pet is due for vaccines. Follow your reminders. You get them early enough to schedule with us. If you're waiting til the day, we're booked out quite a ways."

Miller said it is about a three week wait for those kinds of regular appointments. However, she is still both willing and able to deal with emergencies as they arise.

"Sometimes, it happens where an emergency comes in and the surgery needs to be done that day," Miller said. "We have to push some."

Spays or neuters, as important as they are, are not as emergent as a dog that has something stuck in their digestive tract that has to be removed.

"We try to remind people, if it was your pet that was in that situation, you would want this," Miller said. "The majority of our clients are very understanding, right, they don't want anything to happen to someone else's pet, either."

Miller: Continue to schedule routine appointments early

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As part of the Board of Reno County Commissioners meeting Wednesday, they will see an agreement for a consulting arrangement on the Yoder Water District 101 project.

According to agenda documents,&nbsp;Reno County has been working with Stuart Porter from Schwab Eaton for multiple years on the Reno County Water District No 101 (Yoder) water project. Mr. Porter has worked to come up with a grant for this project that will cover 60% of the cost and has verified the project is on the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Intended Use Plan. The placement on the intended use plan qualifies the project to apply for a KDHE loan this fall that has the potential of a forgivable portion to the benefit of the district.

The agreement that is on the agenda is required for the county to move forward on the project with full design documents.

The remaining pieces of the project are for the design documents to be developed, applying for a KDHE loan, and an agreement with the City of Hutchinson for water rates. Once all of this is in place, the county will be able to go to bid on the project, receive approval of the contract by the county commission, and then begin the construction of the water line.

The Board of County Commissioners meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Planning Commission will meet on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 4:30 p.m. at the Reno County Public Works Department located at 600 Scott Blvd., South Hutchinson, KS&nbsp; 67505.

The purpose of the meeting is to continue the discussion on development of limited scale solar regulations and residential solar regulations.&nbsp; 

This meeting is a continuation of the November 9, 2023, public hearing.&nbsp; However, no public comments will be accepted as that portion of the meeting is closed.

Planning Commission to continue solar regs discussion

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Dan Murray with NFIB-Kansas said progress is being made on making sure regulations in Kansas are consistent across the state.

"The plastic bag bill, as we call it, is a bill that would prohibit municipalities from adopting ordinances banning plastic containers," Murray said. "Think plastic bags, to go boxes from restaurants, etc. That bill passed out of Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee this week and is awaiting action by the full Senate sometime in the next week or two."

Especially in the Kansas City area, it can be hard to know when you are in one local jurisdiction or the other, especially if you're not from there.

"What this bill is intended to do is prevent the patchwork of laws that would be created by these kinds of bans," Murray said. "Lawrence has an ordinance set to come into effect this year. If you're a small business owner in Lawrence that has a location in Lawrence and maybe you have a restaurant in Topeka and a couple in the Kansas City area. Small business owners are impacted by buying in bulk and by leveraging what resources they do have to get items like straws and bags and different items that they use within their retail store or their restaurant."

This would disrupt their supply chain and increase their costs with mostly a symbolic environmental impact.

"The negative impact on small business owners, on other retailers as well, is far greater than any environmental impact this might bring positively," Murray said.

The Lawrence bag ban, if state law is not enacted first, will go into effect March 1.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman told Hutch Post that the progress is continuing on renovations to the buildings that will house the Ad Astra Academy students and the child care centers at 56th and Plum and at Buhler Grade.

"We're moving right along," Couchman said. "We had bids that we sent out for our contractors. They were due to be turned in on Jan. 31. We had sort of a pre-bid meeting. We've kind of gotten them organized. Our Construction Manager at Risk, Simpson Construction, they kind of organized our low to high bids for us. We will be accepting our bids on Monday night's board meeting. Contracts will be sent out next week. Just like that, demolition begins on all three buildings."

The goal is to turn this around as quickly as possible, especially with regard to the old Masonic building where Ad Astra Academy will be.&nbsp;

"We're pretty excited about that," Couchman said. "We've seen some renderings and floor plans now. It's really starting to come to life. The pictures of what it would look like always help me. We are committed to Ad Astra Academies being in their location by the start of the school year next year."

The day care buildings may take a little longer.

"We have to wait on Fire Marshal approval, KDHE approval," Couchman said. "That's a little bit trickier to say, we will be. I know that the buildings itself will be done in the fall. The actual approval for everything, it might be a month or two after it. I would assume, without making this even a stretch of a goal, that the childcare facilities would be open by January."

The sooner they can get them open, the better they can compete for employees, as child care availability is a large issue for potential teachers in the district.

Couchman: Remodeling of facilities will happen soon

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno Connections is a United Way of Reno County program, thanks to the Early Childhood Block Grant, and is in partnership with The Hutchinson Public Library.

 Through this program there is a comprehensive case management, systems navigation, and referrals platform. This is a low-barrier program that aims to empower families to achieve their goals and not only maintain stability but work towards thriving. 

This is achieved by increasing positive parenting practices, social supports, and services, as well as strengthening the overall family unit.

A Community Care Coordinator runs this program and offices out of the Hutchinson Public Library. The coordinator is a community connector and provides appropriate individual, and family connections designed to improve the holistic well-being of citizens that seek support. This includes conducting assessments and individual service plans, providing resources and referrals, aiding in systems navigation, and engaging in helping families advocate for themselves. 

Services are provided at the Hutchinson Public Library. 

The Community Care Coordinator engages in community collaboration activities, educates, and strengthens relationships across the nonprofit and medical sector.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Festivities for Sunday’s big game are fast approaching with scores of people making plans as to where to watch and what they will eat and drink.&nbsp;

"This region, especially, is going to be pretty excited about the Chiefs getting back to the championship game," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "A lot of people will be watching the Super Bowl, whether it's at home or at a friend's house or at a sports bar. We just want to remind people, I think it's pretty self-evident, that impaired driving is a big issue this weekend."

AAA&nbsp;Kansas advises party planners and football fans to&nbsp;prepare by designating a sober driver or arranging for alternate transportation options before the party starts.

"If you're a partygoer, if you plan to drive, don't drink," Steward said. "If you plan to drink, make sure that you have a 100% sober ride home. Whether that's a friend, a ride share, a cab, whatever it takes to get you home safely."

Every day, about 37 people in the United States die in drunk driving crashes – that’s one person every 39 minutes.

"If you're hosting a party, make sure that you're offering food and non-alcoholic beverages," Steward said. "Make sure that your guests are arranging safe rides home after the party, so you don't have that on your conscience."

The Kansas Department of Transportation tracks crash statistics for the 78-hour period (Fri.-Mon.) surrounding the football championship game each year. During this reporting period, from 2019 to 2022, alcohol-related crashes have risen each year, with alcohol playing a factor in one-third of the traffic fatalities.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Spring is storm season in Kansas. That's why Meteorologist Vanessa Pearce from the National Weather Service office in Wichita made a visit to Reno County Thursday night. 

Pearce presented about tornadoes and severe thunderstorms on Feb. 8 at the Fire Command and Training Center in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

"We are the number one state for damaging hail, winds, tornadoes per square mile out of anywhere in the country," Pearce said.&nbsp;

Pearce broke down her presentation into several different topics which included the history of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in Kansas, storm structure visual clues, how to spot storms, how to accurately and safely make a severe weather report and how to take safety measures in severe weather.&nbsp;

 In 2023, Reno County did not receive any tornado warnings but the county did receive 25 severe thunderstorm warnings.&nbsp;

"Be prepared because you can get severe storms in Kansas," Pearce said. "So it is best to be prepared not scared."&nbsp;

The National Weather Service recommends planning for weather emergencies a few days out if the forecast calls for severe weather ahead of time. Some tips for an emergency plan include a family communication plan, storing emergency supplies and keeping safe shelter options in mind.&nbsp;

A few visual clues that can give notice for potentially severe storm structures include knowing the difference between a weak updraft and a small updraft, the knowledge of the anatomy of a storm and knowing the difference between supercells and squall lines.&nbsp;

Pearce said sometimes folks don't have a clear understanding of how the National Weather Service's work may apply to them.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"Our job is protection of life and property," Pearce said. "We want to make sure people are safe. We had a good number of people who were first timers here and people that have been here many times and that's what we want to see. We want to see that wide base."&nbsp;

Pearce said the Wichita office plans to present in 26 different counties this year, including Kingman and Sedgwick County.&nbsp;

NWS brings storm season training to Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Erica Miller, DVM with Apple Lane Animal Hospital reminds us, if you're having a large gathering Sunday for the game, know how your pets will react beforehand.

"Most dogs that are crate trained actually view their crate as a safe space," Miller said. "My dog that does not like a lot of people and change, she actually would put herself back in the bedroom, back on her bed when she was just not sure about everything. The same with people, right? There's introverts and extroverts. Some of us just don't like big crowds and lots of people."

It's also a way to make sure that the treats the people have don't end up making dogs or cats sick.

"There's generally lots of food, different types of food and drinks and people that may or may not have pets may not think, hey, I shouldn't put my plate down here on the floor," Miller said. "Sometimes crating is good to prevent your pet from getting into things they shouldn't that they don't normally have access to, as well."

In fact, even if something they eat isn't harmful in and of itself, their bodies may still not be able to handle it.

"Most of the time, pets are just used to their normal diet," Miller said. "Anything outside the ordinary can definitely cause GI upset, vomiting, diarrhea. Who wants to deal with that the day after the Super Bowl?"

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson Community Foundation welcomes Anna Brown, Oscar Garcia and Peggy Ruebke to its board of directors. They replace outgoing directors Lisa French, Dawn Johnson and David Neal, whose terms expired.

Brown is the Risk and Performance Improvement Manager at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She has previously worked at Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County and the Reno County Health Department.

In addition to her roles in health care, Brown is serving a fourth term as president of the Langdon City Council and is a past member of the HEAL Reno County Advisory Council and Food Policy Council.

She is a Certified Health Education Specialist, a graduate of the Kansas Public Health Leadership Series, and holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational development and master’s degrees in health education and promotion and business administration.

She and her husband have three children and live in Langdon.

Garcia is a Vice President of lending at RCB Bank in Hutchinson.

He has served various community organizations and committees, including Rise Up Reno, Reno County American Red Cross, the Hutchinson Land Bank and the Reno County ARPA Task Force.

Garcia is an alumnus of Leadership Reno County and Hutchinson Community College.

He and his wife live in Hutchinson and have two children.

Ruebke is the mayor of Nickerson and a volunteer firefighter for Reno County District 3.

She serves on the Nickerson Planning and Zoning Board; Nickerson Recreation Board; and the Nickerson Chamber of Commerce, where she is a past president. She was also a member of the Sunflower Neighborhood Association in Wichita, and for many years, she has served as an assistant scoutmaster and leader of Cub Scout Troop 333.

Ruebke graduated from Hutchinson Community College and has completed multiple Kansas Leadership Center programs.

She and her husband have five children and two grandchildren and live in Nickerson.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce will hold its first 2024 Legislative Forum Saturday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Stringer Fine Arts Center, Gallery Theatre at 600 E. 11th in Hutchinson.

Forums will also be held March 9 and April 20.

The Reno County legislators invited to participate are Senator Mark Steffen, Representative Joe Seiwert, Representative Paul Waggoner, Representative Jason Probst, and Representative Michael Murphy.

First Legislative Forum coming up Saturday

Six sets of seven chromosomes make the wheat genome five times larger than the human genome. This complexity makes wheat breeding even more difficult, but technology like double haploid breeding has helped public and private researchers unlock potential agronomic, quality and even nutritional traits.&nbsp;

Key to this work is a farmer-backed, for-profit plant services company housed at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center — Heartland Plant Innovations (HPI). Dusti Gallagher, HPI president/CEO, recently sat down with Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations, on the “Wheat’s on Your Mind” podcast to walk through the formation of HPI and how the company is accelerating and improving the wheat breeding pipeline.&nbsp;

Technology for crop improvement experienced a boom in the early 2000s, but applying those techniques was focused on corn and soybeans. The push to start HPI was the result of the industry’s recognition that wheat was being left behind when it came to applying innovative breeding tools.&nbsp;

“We were just trying to bring the message that we needed to make sure that wheat stayed relevant in the United States compared to other crops,” Gallagher said. “We wanted to let them know producers, specifically in Kansas and HRW (hard red winter wheat) producers, were really interested in bringing innovations and technology to the forefront with wheat because, at the time, we were losing a little ground to other crops.”&nbsp;

The industry faced another significant challenge at the time — a lack of synergy and collective focus. As a result, a core group brought together representatives from across the industry, including producers representing the Kansas Wheat Commission and the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas State University, the University of Kansas and private companies.&nbsp;

“It started with communication. At that time, there was very little communication between the public and private sectors on wheat breeding; everybody was doing their own thing,” Gallagher said. “So, it started with bringing everybody to the same table to talk about what our common interests were. And once we did that, it started falling into place.”

HPI was officially formed in 2009. Kansas farmers, through state organizations, have majority ownership in HPI, and other members include private companies, universities and individual shareholders. The company started in Throckmorton Hall but quickly recognized that their work to amp up breeding technology required lab space, growth rooms, greenhouse space and other spaces to mix soil, plant pots, thresh heads and more. As a result, the early success of HPI helped provide the spark that led to the construction of the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center, where the company is now housed.&nbsp;

Today, HPI has seven full-time staff drawn from all over the world for their unique expertise, including agronomy, molecular biology, botany and biotechnology. In addition, two to three part-time students gain hands-on experience by assisting with harvesting, threshing, caring for plants and more.&nbsp;

Instead of competing with public and private wheat breeding programs, HPI was built around the idea of providing additional bandwidth and applying very specific technologies to assist those programs. The first — and still primary — of these tools is the production of double haploids, which essentially cuts half the time out of the wheat breeding process.&nbsp;

“We’re basically taking only the genetic material from one of the parents, the female parent, and we’re keeping those genetics and rebuilding that plant to where it can be a mature seed-producing plant,” Gallagher said. “And so, there’s a lot of steps along the way.”&nbsp;

The goal of the double haploid process is to create a population of plants that all have the same genetics across all their chromosomes, something that takes generations of traditional breeding to achieve but can be accomplished in a single year with the double haploid process.&nbsp;

“We’re basically rescuing a very tender, very delicate haploid embryo and culturing it and taking care of it until it becomes a viable seedling,” Gallagher said. “Then we double its chromosomes through a process that we’ve created and that we’ve refined here at HPI. And that doubling process then creates a double haploid plant.”

The seeds from these plants then go back to wheat breeding programs, where breeders know the exact genetic material and can more efficiently evaluate lines in their programs.&nbsp;

“When they take it to the field, and they grow it, and they start evaluating it, they know its genotype, then they can make better decisions, and they can either advance that line quickly through their program, or they can make a decision that they need to do more crossing with it,” Gallagher said. “So, the double haploid process is a tool that allows a better-quality line to go through the process, and breeders can advance it quickly, and they can make better decisions based on that very pure genetic line that we provide to them.”

HPI has capacity to produce 20,000 double haploids a year and works with customers from all over the United States, from wheat breeders to public and private crop improvement programs. The process is fee-for-service, so it is open to the entirety of the wheat breeding pipeline.&nbsp;

“Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen the first seeds that have gone through our program,” Gallagher said. “They’ve been released to producers, and so they’ve been very good, healthy varieties that have proven to be profitable for producers.”

In addition to double haploid production, HPI also provides technical expertise using other advanced plant breeding tools, including genotyping and marker-assisted selection as well as supporting traditional wheat breeding programs and proprietary projects. Every piece of the business, however, is built on partnerships.&nbsp;

“The producers are really the foundation for all of this,” Gallagher said. “Everything that we do is driven toward making a better opportunity for those producers to have better varieties to be able to improve their bottom lines.”&nbsp;

From uncovering the dense nutrients for improving wheat as a food crop to bringing in trails from wheat’s wild relatives or improving agronomic traits, Gallagher told Harries there is still more to unlock in the wheat genome.&nbsp;

“I really don’t believe that we have tapped the genetic potential of wheat,” Gallagher said. “We’re just now getting to the point where we’ve mapped the wheat genome, and there’s still so much in there that we need to help discover, and that takes time.”

Ultimately, Gallagher encouraged wheat producers to continue investing in the research process — both in private companies like HPI and public breeding programs like that at K-State.&nbsp;

“Investment in wheat research is critical to us continuing to uncover the vast benefits wheat has to offer,” Gallagher said. “It takes a long time. Investment in wheat research is the long game; it’s not the short game. Continue to support universities and checkoffs because it’s those wheat research dollars that are really going to make an impact. We just need to keep doing what we’re doing, but also looking at new opportunities and new technologies — and that’s what we’re here to do at HPI.”&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Even as the prices at the pump rise across the country, they aren't doing so yet in Kansas.

"We've been in a fairly stable period here with gas prices," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "We are up slightly over where we were a month ago. The average today in Kansas is $2.74 a gallon. That's six cents higher than we were a month ago, but we're down a cent from last week at this time."

A year ago, gas was $3.17 a gallon in Kansas.

"The Kansas average is 41 cents less than the national average," Steward said. "We're currently fourth lowest in the nation. Only Oklahoma, Wyoming and Colorado have a lower average gas price right now."

"Crude oil prices have been moving up slightly, just looking at some of the situation going on in the Middle East," Steward said. "Israel recently rejected a cease fire deal in Gaza. We've also seen U.S. gas inventory fall in the past week or so. Those things have been putting a little bit of pressure, upwardly, on crude oil prices."

More than half of the price of a given gallon of gasoline is based in the price of the barrel of oil from which it is refined when that barrel is on the market.

AAA: Gas prices fairly stable, for now

NICKERSON, Kan. — According to a social media post Thursday from Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309 Superintendent Curtis Nightingale, a student discovered a toy gun in a toilet at Nickerson High School. The student reported it to the office and it was retrieved by Police Chief Paul Allen. 

An investigation is currently underway in an attempt to determine who might have brought the object to school. This was a child's toy and presented no threat to students or staff. 

"We just wanted to make you aware of the facts of the situation so you are not alarmed should you hear about this through different channels," Nightingale said.
