HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire responded to the 600 block of East A. Ave. for a structure fire Saturday morning. When they got there, crews found a 2 ½ story, ballon frame, residential structure with heavy fire involvement on the back side of the home extending from the ground up to the attic. It was unknown if the home was occupied. Crews quickly made an offensive interior push for fire attack and search. Crews were faced with excessive storage conditions and had to back out of the structure. Fire involvement increased in the attic and crews switched to defensive operations. HFD used aerial fire streams to extinguish the fire that extended through the knee walls of the attic space.
After extensive work from the outside of the structure, crews were able to enter the home and finish extinguishment. Crews were able to complete a search of the home and found no occupants.
The home did not have smoke alarms or residential sprinklers. No firefighter injuries were reported and both adjacent homes were undamaged. The fire damaged approx. 70% of the home. The fire is currently under investigation by the Hutchinson Fire Department Fire Marshal.
