HAVEN, Kan. — Kara Bunce, health educator at Reno County Health Department was thrilled to partner with Principal Shannon Atherton and Counselor Maddy Sotelo at Haven Middle School to host a Mental Health & Wellness Day for 7th and 8th graders!

What began as a simple idea for health presentations blossomed into a full-day event focused on mental health education and wellness. Together, the team created an engaging experience to help students understand mental health, reduce stigma, and develop practical strategies to care for their well-being.

Once the initial planning stages were complete, other health department staff and community partners from Rise Up Reno and from Haven were brought on board to lead sessions for the day.

From mindfulness and resilience to healthy relationships (and everything in between), students explored a variety of topics aimed at building healthier minds and stronger connections.

More than 130 students rotated through seven sessions at the middle school throughout the day.

Those sessions were:

Managing Stress & Anxiety, led by Alyssa Danler from Rise Up Reno

Health Relationships & Communication led by Megan Gottschalk Hammersmith from the Reno County Health Department

Building Resilience & Self-Esteem led by Kelly McClure from the Reno County Health Department

Understanding Emotions & Mental Health Stigma, led by Lisa Orrison from the Rise Up Reno/Reno County Suicide Prevention Coalition

Group Art/Creative Expression led by Kara Bunce from the Reno County Health Department

Mindful Movement/Physical Activity led by Zumba instructor Jamie Back

Character Strong led by Zaelynn Foth, Haven Grade School Counselor

Teaching students about mental health is vital—not only to help them navigate challenges but also to empower them to thrive. We’re so proud to have been a part of this meaningful day!
