PRATT, Kan. — Miss Kansas 2024 will be crowned on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at the 2024 Miss Kansas Competition.&nbsp; The Miss Kansas Organization (MKO) is proud to welcome 26 Miss Kansas delegates from the State of Kansas to the competition, which will take place on the campus of Pratt Community College in Pratt, Kansas.&nbsp;

The Miss Kansas Organization Executive Director, Stephanie Harris remarked, “We are very pleased with the number of intelligent, ambitious, and talented young women who have qualified for the competition,” Harris said.&nbsp; “It will be a challenging task for the judges to choose the next Miss Kansas.

Tickets for the 2024 Miss Kansas Competition, are available online at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.misskansas.org/" target="_blank">www.misskansas.org</a>&nbsp;or by visiting&nbsp;<a href="http://www.selectaseat.com/" target="_blank">www.selectaseat.com</a>&nbsp;on May 6, 2024.&nbsp; Tickets are available for purchase in the Miss Kansas Organization office during competition week, but tickets are limited.

Miss Kansas delegates will compete in five phases of competition, including talent, health and fitness, evening gown, private interview, and on-stage interview. During the competition, each delegate will also discuss her chosen platform, a social or community issue of concern to herself and our society at large.&nbsp; The winner of the 2024 Miss Kansas Competition will be awarded scholarship funds for her college or graduate school education.&nbsp; In addition, she will receive many gifts provided by MKO’s generous sponsors.&nbsp; Other special awards given during the competition include the Community Service Initiative Scholarship, acknowledging a 2024 delegate for their outstanding achievements in their platform work.&nbsp;

During her year of service, Miss Kansas 2024 will travel across the state of Kansas speaking to government officials, business leaders, community groups, and the citizens of Kansas, about her platform and encouraging them to become involved in her cause.&nbsp; She will represent Kansas when she competes for the Miss America title in January 2025.

“I have truly enjoyed my year of service as Miss Kansas and am proud to have traveled the state of Kansas raising awareness for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Kansas Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Office, Lead for America, Envision, Inc., and promoting my platform of “One Vision is Not the Only Vision,” said Miss Kansas 2023, Courtney Wages.&nbsp; “I know that the personal and professional skills I have gained from this experience will help me as I continue throughout my life.”

Wages continued, “Miss Kansas not only serves as a role model for young women and as an ambassador for the Miss America Opportunity, but she also encourages girls and young women to develop their leadership skills and to take an active role in their communities.”

Miss Kansas coming up in June in Pratt

I couldn’t help but think of the Folger’s coffee cans around my grandparent’s house when I saw “Planet vs. Plastics,” the slogan for Earth Day this year. There was always a can in the kitchen near the percolator ready to brew a fresh pot. Once emptied, the cans were repurposed in the basement, garage and barn for a whole host of other purposes, ranging from simple storage to cleaning paint brushes. On the Fourth of July, my cousins and I would scrounge up a can that hadn’t found a use yet and proceed to use firecrackers to launch it like a missile.

Most of those cans still serve a purpose, holding an assortment of washers in the garage or fence clips in the barn, but long ago Folger’s ditched the cans for plastic containers. The stated goal at the time was to provide fresher ground coffee, but I also imagine there was some cost savings as well. Either way, the utility of an empty container didn’t change much. But I doubt we’d have much success using fireworks with the modern version.

Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 to remind people about the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability to create a healthier planet and brighter future for mankind. In 2024 this apparently means taking aim at plastics, with a “commitment to end plastics for the sake of human and planetary health.” To be fair, it further elaborates the goal is to merely achieve a 60 percent reduction in the production of all plastics by 2040.

I’m all for conservation and sustainability, and I can support efforts to reduce plastic pollution, but doing away or significantly reducing plastics in all forms is likely to create worse outcomes for humans and the planet. A ban is like using a machete instead of a scalpel.

The prevalence of plastics in our lives is because they offer convenience, durability and affordability. Food waste would be significantly higher without the preserving power of plastic. Glass and steel containers often require more resources to produce, and both are heavier and require more energy to transport. Sterile plastic packaging saves lives in medical settings every day.

There’s often a lack of nuance when people talk about plastic, and that includes so-called single-use varieties like bags from the grocery store, water bottles or margarine containers. Yet, like the Folger’s container, those items often serve multiple purposes after their initial use. From lining wastebaskets to holding leftovers, plastic can remain productive for a long time.

Plastic is valuable because it can be molded to any shape and be impact resistant and waterproof. The nontoxic material doesn’t decay or corrode. Plastic’s main attribute – durability – is also its biggest curse. It’s a miracle of modern chemistry that has no natural mechanism to break down in the environment.

The solution isn’t to end the use of plastic and all its invaluable contributions to humans and the planet on Earth Day, rather it’s to better understand the responsibility that comes with having a fresh cup of coffee, a bottle of water on the go or picking up groceries at the store.

We should embrace the virtues of plastic and work to better manage its side effects. The problem is pollution, not plastic. It will take a little creativity, but I’m positive we can reap the rewards of plastic and make Earth a better place to live for us and all the other living creatures who call our planet home.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The South Hutchinson City Council appointed&nbsp;Robert F. Wylie for a vacant position on the council at their regular meeting Monday night.&nbsp;

President of Council Dina Brislin motioned to appoint Wylie and council member Kyle Cokeley seconded the motion.&nbsp;

Another important item on the agenda in South Hutchinson was action item No. 3 which included the approval of a contract with Plot Marketing on phase 2 of the city's rebranding project.&nbsp;

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/df72825a-d6b2-411e-90e2-64b4434a12af">In February, City Administrator Jeff Schenk told Hutch Post that the city was working on an entire rebranding project that includes the South Hutchinson logo, website branding, messaging and color schemes.</a>

The council decided to table the contract for phase 2.&nbsp;Cokeley motioned to approve the contract and it failed for lack of a second.&nbsp;

The decision to table discussion for the approval of the new contract had to do with what approach was most effective. Council member Valerie Griffin expressed concerns for the cost of branding with the majority of it going towards a new logo. 

"I'm still kind of stuck on why that is the cost that it is," Griffin said.&nbsp;

Schenk explained that the cost would be about $25,000 if Plot Marketing were to create their own design samples for the rebranding. He said if the council were to present their own designs to Plot, the price would go down. He provided council members with an example from the city of Newton. It cost Newton $11,000 because the city already had pre-designed ideas created for the marketing company to work with.

Schenk said his preferred method for the project is to get feedback from the community and then present that information to Plot.&nbsp;

"Personally I think&nbsp; it's more organic going that route and then using that to build it out," Schenk said. "I think a couple of creative people might come up with ideas. But a random person like me who is not creative at all, without really being able to offer any ideas for logo design, so I wouldn't feel like I was included in it at all. The way that I think I'm proposing is because bringing somebody else in, they are also the ones that have to decipher all of that information and its coming in from Facebook. If we do it the other way, where we are going to make recommendations, then we are going to need to find some staff with time to decipher through everything, come up with a chart, and present it and go through a board of picking it and&nbsp; deciphering which information we want to keep in."&nbsp;

South Hutchinson appoints council member, discusses rebranding project

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters had multiple calls going on at once Monday afternoon. The first was just before 5 p.m. in the 5400 block of East 4th. 

Crews were able to see smoke shortly after leaving their stations. A home was fully engulfed in fire being driven by wind sustained at 28 miles per hour gusting to 43 miles per hour.

The wind spread the fire north from the single story home to two large brush piles and a vehicle and started two small brush fires. Hutchinson Fire started rural water operations and upgraded the alarm. Outside departments were requested for water supply.&nbsp;

The East 4th fire was put out by approximately 6:30 p.m. However, while they were working that fire, another call came in in the 200 block of West Avenue F for another structure fire. Crews were able to see smoke shortly after leaving their stations. A home was fully engulfed in fire being driven by wind sustained at 28 miles per hour gusting to 43 miles per hour.The wind spread the fire north from the single story home to two large brush piles and a vehicle and started two small brush fires. Hutchinson Fire started rural water operations and upgraded the alarm. Outside departments were requested for water supply.&nbsp;The East 4th fire was put out by approximately 6:30 p.m. However, while they were working that fire, another call came in in the 200 block of West Avenue F for another structure fire. With a background in Business Management and Entrepreneurship from Hutchinson Community College, and ongoing studies in Human Resources Management, Carissa is well-prepared to lead Hutchinson's housing initiatives.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The gates to Cow Creek were closed until April 21st for the Creekside clean-up day that took place on Saturday.

This closure reduced the water flow to facilitate the removal of trash and debris from the creek bed by the clean-up crews. 

12 volunteers gathered at Bernard White Park on Saturday, cleaning up the park and the stretch of Cow Creek adjacent to the park.

Creekside neighborhood cleans up Cow Creek Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Earth Matters, a group of concerned citizens from eight churches representing five faiths in Hutchinson, have been focused on reducing, reusing and recycling for years now, but specifically with the proliferation of electronic devices, they want Hutchinson residents to know that E-Waste can and should be recycled.

"E-Waste is actually the fastest growing stream of trash that we know of," said Garth Strand with Earth Matters. "We're not doing a great job at this point of getting it back in circulation, recycling it. There's a lot of precious metals involved in the electronic devices."

"On Main Street, we have Sanford Computer Works," said Lois Smith with Earth Matters. "That's 20 South Main. They take all E-Waste. I went in just to check when he said it, because I couldn't believe he really meant all E-Waste. When you walk in the store, there on the left is a huge cardboard box. He took me through and he sorted. They get battery chargers, they get disks from people, they get all the computer things that you might expect, but they also have tools. They take anything that is not a cathode TV. They'll take flat screen TVs."

There is a lot of E-Waste that does not get back into the system.

"The World Health Organization said currently, only 17% of E-Waste is recycled," Smith said. "The rest is landing in landfills and all of the toxins from that, and the lead, leach into our soil."

The UN defines E-waste as&nbsp;any discarded products with a battery or plug, and features toxic and hazardous substances such as mercury, that can pose severe risk to human and environmental health.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Earth Matters focuses on E-Waste this Earth Day

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Law enforcement officers at locations across the state will be collecting unused medications for safe disposal on Saturday.

The next National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, sponsored by the DEA, will be on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 10:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m.

&nbsp;The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.&nbsp;

Since the Drug Take-Back Day program began in 2010, more than 118 tons of unwanted medications have been collected and destroyed in Kansas alone.

Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates opioid overdoses kill nearly 130 Americans every day. According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, pharmaceutical opioids are a leading cause of drug poisoning deaths in Kansas.

Studies show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that traditional methods for disposing of unused medicines – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – pose potential safety and health hazards and should be avoided.

There are several Hutch Post area departments that will be a part of the day.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Police Department will hold their event at the Dillons Marketplace Pharmacy Side at 3200 Plaza East Drive.

The Sterling Police Department will hold their event at the department at 118 North Broadway in Sterling.

The Lindsborg Police Department will hold their event at the department at 102 South First Street in Lindsborg.

The McPherson Police Department and McPherson County Sheriff's Office will be hosting their event and accepting expired and unwanted Prescription Medications for disposal at the Law Enforcement Center parking lot located at 1177 West Woodside Street in McPherson.

The Harvey County Sheriff's Office will hold their event at 120 East 7th in Newton.

Needles, liquids or inhalers cannot be accepted at Drug Take Back Day events.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Housing Commission will receive proposals to spend a significant amount of its ARPA allocation at its meeting on Wednesday. 

According to agenda documents, the Housing Commission received $308,000 in ARPA funds to advance housing initiatives in Hutchinson. As of April 2024, the Housing Commission has approved a total of $82,000 in programming. 

Director of Strategic Growth, Dave Sotelo has asked for approval of three specific requests on Wednesday.

• Recommendation: Given the importance of data-driven decisionmaking in urban planning, allocating funds to Urban3 will enable the city to gather crucial insights into housing trends and community development strategies. This investment aligns with the goal of creating sustainable and equitable housing solutions.

2. Interfaith Demolition Program: $27,500

• Recommendation: Supporting the Interfaith Demolition Program is vital for addressing blight and revitalizing neighborhoods. By allocating funds to this program, the city can expedite the removal of derelict properties, paving the way for future redevelopment efforts and enhancing the overall livability of the city.

• Recommendation: SCKEDD’s innovative resurgence program is addressing a critical need in the holistic housing efforts. These funds will be used to make further enhancements to properties including sidewalk and paint improvements.

If the approval of these projects goes through Wednesday, a balance of $93,500 will remain.

Sotelo said city staff is diligently examining the existing gaps within the housing ecosystem to devise innovative recommendations for the allocation of these funds. 

"We are committed to maximizing the impact of every dollar to address pressing housing needs and foster a more inclusive and resilient community," Sotelo said.

The Hutchinson Housing Commission will meet Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 3:30 p.m. in the&nbsp;City Council Chambers Workroom at 125 E. Avenue B.

April Midway Movie Night at Fairgrounds Saturday

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners will see a proposal at their meeting on Wednesday to spend $260,000 in ARPA funds on the Reno County EMS station in Arlington. This was one of the projects originally approved by the Commission in 2022.

Reno County and the hospital are in discussions to get the Arlington EMS station completed in 2024.


The $260,000 in ARPA money comes from the U.S. Treasury's State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds that must be spent by December 31, 2026.

The Board of County Commissioners meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Local business and community leader Bob Fee announced Monday his Senate Campaign will be hosting events in multiple counties on Friday, May 3.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson and Earth Matters are teaching kids about how to use their resources more wisely.

"We work with primarily fourth and fifth graders that go to the after school program at Avenue A," said Nancy Bether with Earth Matters. "They are very curious about the Reno County Sanitary Landfill and how all of that works. We got to go out there and look at it and satisfy some of their questions. It was a pretty fascinating field trip. They had lots of questions about how people recycle paint and chemicals and lawn things. They were very curious about the big pits and all of the birds."

Along with a set curriculum, students learn about the Reno County Landfill and the science used in the local waste system and the TECH Recycling Center, Fair Price Clothing, and Builders Bargains to see how reusing takes place locally.

"In May, we're going to go to a dairy farm that's self supportive from the very beginning," Bether said. "They have a cycle where they wash their barns out with their pond water and they raise all their own dairy cows and they raise all their own feed for their dairy cows, so basically, we're just trying to educate our kiddos on how to be good stewards."

Earth Matters hopes to take students who have completed the program into classrooms and community organizations to share their commitment to environmentally conscious choices.

"We always want to give kids the opportunity to learn more about our community and the part they can take in it," said Lindsey Fields with the Boys and Girls Club. "I'm personally already seeing the impact that Earth Matters has. I run our little torch club program over at Avenue A, which is fourth and fifth graders. They are talking about trees and parks and rivers and turtles and large cats, which is probably the zoo. Those are the kinds of things that kids are interested in. They care about the world around them, but they don't necessarily know what they can do, because kids don't always feel empowered, so that is part of what we're here to do is give them the education and the voice to make a difference."

Boys and Girls Club and Earth Matters teaching reuse choices

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year, Zion Burgess won the Kansas Youth of the Year title in March.

Burgess is a senior at Hutchinson High School. In mid-June he will travel to Dallas to compete for the regional title. Mr. Burgess will deliver his speech to the Board of Education at their meeting Monday night.

The Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle.

Each state-level Youth of the Year, including military, earns a $2,500 college scholarship. Each regional Youth of the Year, including regional military finalists, receives a $20,000 college scholarship. The National Youth of the Year receives a $50,000 scholarship.

Since 1947, Youth of the Year has been Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Club members.

The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education meets Monday night at 6 p.m. at the Administration Center at 1520 North Plum.
