Citizens Bank of Kansas holding essay contest for Cosmosphere Camps

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The unemployment rate in Reno County was lower for the month of March 2024.

According to the Kansas Department of Labor, the jobless rate for the county went down three tenths of a percent to 3.1%. The jobless rate for the same period in 2023 was 3.1%.

There were 882 county residents out of work.&nbsp;

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.7% in March. This is unchanged from 2.7% in February and unchanged from 2.7% in March 2023.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 6,400 from February. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs&nbsp;increased by 5,500 over the month, while government increased by 900.

Since March 2023&nbsp;Kansas' seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 21,800. This change is due to an increase of 16,400 private sector jobs and an increase of 5,400 government jobs.

Reno Co. unemployment down in March 2024

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — David Foster with the Hutchinson YMCA said their Strong Community campaign was big again this year.

"It is very important," Foster said. "That's our annual fundraiser that helps us raise money to make the Y accessible for all. It helps us meet our mission. This year, our goal was $115,100. Last year, we raised just a little over $105,000. We just wrapped up our campaign last week. Our total was $136,985."

That just helps close the gap on money that the Y would use from the operating budget to meet the need. The need that they have is greater than the money that is raised.

"That will again, help us serve more kids and families and also provide free community based programs like Willpower Hour, Saturday Night at the Y and Livestrong."

In addition to the money raised through the campaign, the Hutchinson YMCA received grant support from the Hutchinson Community Foundation to serve additional people coming to the community.

"I just wanted to thank them and their Strategic Impact Committee for awarding us a $4900 grant," Foster said. "We've got some refugee families that have relocated to Hutch. We've been helping a few of them with the income-based financial assistance. They are going to provide us that funding to allow twelve families and five individuals to have an annual membership to the YMCA. They are covering half the cost for that and the Y will cover the other half."&nbsp;

YMCA 2024 campaign a success 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It's National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and the Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications team is celebrating their telecommunicators all week long.&nbsp;

"This week we are trying to put some faces to the voices that are often you know heard but nobody's ever seen," Assistant Director of Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications Stacie Gagnebin said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Telecommunicators are part of the 911 emergency dispatch system for reporting emergencies and requesting assistance from police, fire and medical services. 

A telecommunicator is the first person on the line to answer a 9-1-1 call and from there, they help the caller through each step of the emergency and coordination of services.&nbsp;

"Our telecommunicators are responsible for handling over 100,000 phone calls every year," Gagnebin said. "As well as 2 million radio transmissions each year and they also help service over 40 agencies in our community. They're really that vital link to the community and our responders."

Gagnebin said folks can help show appreciation for their local telecommunicators in Reno County by telling them thank you on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/HutchReno911">Facebook</a>.&nbsp;

Emergency communications team celebrates national telecommunicators week

RENO COUNTY — The exit ramp from northbound K-14 to Fourth Avenue is expected to close Monday, April 22, and reopen around 10 a.m. Thursday, April 25.

The entrance ramp from Fourth Avenue to northbound K-14 is expected to close Tuesday, April 23, and reopen around 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27.

During the closures, motorists should seek other routes.

The ramp work is part of a nearly $3.6 million patching project on K-14. The Kansas Department of Transportation project is from the west K-14/U.S. 50 junction north to Yaggy Road.&nbsp;The length is almost 7 miles. The work is expected to be completed around mid-August.

During the work, ramp closures will occur at times. K-14 traffic will be restricted to one lane and controlled by flaggers or a pilot car. Motorists should be prepared to slow down and stop and face delays of up to 15 minutes.

Iowa Civil Contracting Inc., of Victor, Iowa, is the primary contractor for the $3,559,085 project.

Main Street Hops for TECH tickets still available

Kaden Weltmer’s first three words were mom, dad and tractor. That combined passion for agriculture and family has never wavered as he worked on the family operation, took on leadership roles in 4-H and competed in FFA. Now a high school senior, his continued commitment to studying agriculture at Kansas State University and his plans to return to the family operation following college make him an ideal recipient for the 2024 Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship, administered by the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers.

“Farming is in my blood, and I’ve loved it from a very young age,” Weltmer said, adding that his first tractor ride planting corn was at three weeks old. “When other people around me are asked what they wanted to be in life, they would say they didn’t know yet. For me, I have always known what I wanted to do; I love to farm.”&nbsp;

“The only thing better to young me than Christmas was getting out of school and getting to go out and ride in the combine with my dad.”&nbsp;

The Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship was established in 2009 to honor Herb Clutter’s influential role in organizing leadership groups on behalf of Kansas wheat producers and is supported by the generosity of the Herb Clutter family.&nbsp;

Herbert W. Clutter was a farmer from Holcomb and the first president of the National Association of Wheat Growers, which was established in 1948. Clutter encouraged Kansas wheat farmers to organize as a strong, unified voice, which led to the formation of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers in 1952. He encouraged research in education and industrial uses of wheat, improved variety development and methods to produce the best product at the lowest cost. Clutter’s efforts led to the formation of the Kansas Wheat Commission by the Kansas legislature in 1957.

Like Clutter, Weltmer grew up working on his family farm. On the family operation in Smith Center, they raise wheat, corn, soybeans and sorghum in addition to a cow-calf herd, a registered Angus cow herd and a registered Boer goat herd. The family also runs a small feed yard. Weltmer is already putting his lifetime of experience to work by cash-renting 93 acres of his own ground from his grandfather.&nbsp;

Weltmer is active in Smith County 4-H Council and FFA. His FFA agriscience project — “Digging Deeper: A Study of Stratification of Nutrients in No-till Soils” earned him a trip to nationals, where he placed second — as a high school freshman. But you can’t get a major in running a combine or a tractor,” Weltmer said. “I first started down the path of agronomy because I really liked projects like ‘Digging Deeper.’ That’s where I thought I would fall in love with agronomy. But then I continually worked with our cattle, and I decided I really like that too. That’s what led me down the path of finding the way I could come out with both.”&nbsp;

Following graduation, he wants to put what he learns to work back in Smith County as the next generation on the family operation.&nbsp;

For me, I have always known what I wanted to do; I love to farm.”&nbsp;“The only thing better to young me than Christmas was getting out of school and getting to go out and ride in the combine with my dad.”&nbsp;The Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship was established in 2009 to honor Herb Clutter’s influential role in organizing leadership groups on behalf of Kansas wheat producers and is supported by the generosity of the Herb Clutter family.&nbsp;Herbert W. Clutter was a farmer from Holcomb and the first president of the National Association of Wheat Growers, which was established in 1948. Clutter encouraged Kansas wheat farmers to organize as a strong, unified voice, which led to the formation of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers in 1952. He encouraged research in education and industrial uses of wheat, improved variety development and methods to produce the best product at the lowest cost. Clutter’s efforts led to the formation of the Kansas Wheat Commission by the Kansas legislature in 1957.Like Clutter, Weltmer grew up working on his family farm. On the family operation in Smith Center, they raise wheat, corn, soybeans and sorghum in addition to a cow-calf herd, a registered Angus cow herd and a registered Boer goat herd. The family also runs a small feed yard. Weltmer is already putting his lifetime of experience to work by cash-renting 93 acres of his own ground from his grandfather.&nbsp;Weltmer is active in Smith County 4-H Council and FFA. His FFA agriscience project — “Digging Deeper: A Study of Stratification of Nutrients in No-till Soils” earned him a trip to nationals, where he placed second — as a high school freshman. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Freightliner truck driven by&nbsp; Cody R. Andrews, 60, Wichita,&nbsp;was exiting the Kwik Shop parking lot at 515 East Dean Street in Burrton.

The truck struck a legally parked 2019 Nissan Versa driven by Shawn M. Smith, 36, Moundridge. After the collision, the truck left the scene.

EMS transported Smith to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Andrews was not injured.&nbsp; The KHP did not have seat belt usage detail or additional information.

Kan. man hospitalized after 2-vehicle hit-and-run crash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson Public Works Traffic Division is implementing improvements to the traffic signals at the intersection of 30th Ave and Halstead St to include protected left turns for eastbound and westbound traffic. These changes will designate the inside lanes on both east and west directions of 30th Ave to accommodate both through traffic and left turns. This adjustment introduces a split-phase system, which allows eastbound and westbound traffic on 30th Ave dedicated times to proceed, while halting all conflicting traffic movements with red signals, thus enhancing safety.

Please note, northbound and southbound traffic on Halstead St will remain unaffected and continue to flow simultaneously.

To facilitate these upgrades, there will be a brief power outage at the intersection on April 19th to complete necessary connections. During this time, officers from the Hutchinson Police Department will be present to direct traffic, minimizing inconvenience to motorists.

After the power is restored, the intersection will temporarily operate in recall mode, cycling through green lights at each approach regardless of traffic volume. By the end of next week, a traffic detection system will be installed to optimize traffic flow.

30th and Halstead intersection light cycle to change

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College’s Board of Trustees chair Terry Bisbee announced today the Board has selected Dr. Tricia Paramore as the college’s next president, pending approval of a contract at a special meeting to be held on Wednesday, May 1.

Paramore, the vice president of academic affairs at HutchCC since February 2023 and a 28-year veteran of the institution, would become president of the college July 1.

Bisbee said the board of trustees discussed the presidential choice for over an hour in executive session at a meeting held Monday night.

From a beginning pool of 46 applicants, five semifinalists emerged and were interviewed by the search committee. The field narrowed to three finalists, each participating in a daylong interview on campus.

Hundreds of people heard the three finalists and were asked to fill out evaluation forms. The forms were then distributed to all board members for their review and to assist them in the decision-making process.

“I appreciate the work of the search committee and the Board of Trustees,” said Bisbee. “Based on the feedback we received, we’re very confident in our selection and look forward to getting an agreement finalized with Dr. Paramore.”

RENO COUNTY —&nbsp; The entrance ramp from Sixth Avenue to northbound K-14 is closed and expected to reopen around 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 23.

The Kansas Department of Transportation project is from the west K-14/U.S. 50 junction north to Yaggy Road.&nbsp;The length is almost 7 miles. The work is expected to be completed around mid-August.During the work, ramp closures will occur at times. K-14 traffic will be restricted to one lane and controlled by flaggers or a pilot car. K-14 and Sixth Avenue northbound ramp closed

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce hosted its first 2024 National Civics Bee at Stringer Fine Arts Center on Wednesday. Middle School students from Central Christian School, Hutchinson Middle School 7, Hutchinson Middle School 8 and Morgan Elementary competed.&nbsp;

Their were 15 students in the live quiz competition on April 17. Each student had to write a 500 word essay to be selected.

HMS-8 student Leah Foos placed first and was awarded $500. Her essay focused on substance abuse and youth prevention.&nbsp;

"It was a very close, honestly, top three," Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce Debra Teufel said. "They all were, you know, very passionate about their subjects that they chose. I think the thing that really stood out to us the most from Leah, who was the winner, is  just, she was very poised on the stage. She was concise in her answers, but also well thought out about solutions to the problem."&nbsp;

There were two quiz rounds that consisted of questions about the Constitution and questions about United States history. The top five finalists moved on to the final round which consisted of a short presentation about their essay. Three different judges asked each student questions about key concepts in their essay. There were six finalists in Hutchinson due to a three way tie after the second quiz round.&nbsp;

Essay topics included raising funds for a local animal shelter, solving homelessness and how to engage more parental involvement in their lives. 

Seventh grade student Koda McConnell from Central Christian School placed second and was awarded $250. His essay was about self defense against school violence.&nbsp;

HMS-7 student Aah'lice Jackson placed third and was awarded $125. Jackson's essay was about solving poverty in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

For the final round, the judges scored each finalist on clarity, civic principles and their overall presentation.&nbsp;

HMS-8 student wins civics bee

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Soroptimists Women's Show and the Family Health Fair are together in the Meadowlark Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds on Saturday.

"This is our 21st year hosting the Women's Fair in Hutchinson," said Jane Holzrichter with the&nbsp;Soroptimists. "We are really excited to go in one building this year and share the wealth."

The event is free to attend for the first time, but fundraising from booth sales at the fair helps the Soroptimists with scholarships for women.

"We are looking at approximately 160 booths,"&nbsp;Holzrichter said. "We offer scholarships each year for women that are going into college and they need to just have a little assistance. We do not put a disclaimer on how they can spend the money, as long as they are going after higher education."

The Family Health Fair, sponored by PrairieStar Health Center for the 15th year, will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the women's show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

We're bringing back the carotids," Holzrichter said. "That was something that was missed over the last couple of years. The hospital is bringing back some of those screenings that have been so popular. Glucose screenings and carotid doppler and things like that."

"We offer scholarships each year for women that are going into college and they need to just have a little assistance. We do not put a disclaimer on how they can spend the money, as long as they are going after higher education."The Family Health Fair, sponored by PrairieStar Health Center for the 15th year, will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the women's show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.We're bringing back the carotids," Holzrichter said. "That was something that was missed over the last couple of years. The hospital is bringing back some of those screenings that have been so popular. Women's Show and Health Fair free Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 3rd Annual Cruise for the Cure Poker Run is in Hutchinson, KS on Saturday, April 20.

"I think everybody in the community knows somebody or has somebody in their family who has been affected by cancer," said Matt Bretz of Bretz Injury Law. "We've been involved in supporting the Cancer Council auction for probably 20 years. This idea was really to bring a couple of passions of mine together, one was motorcycles. The second is community support."

Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. with engines starting at 10:30 a.m.. The Poker Run will start at Salty Cycles, 129 E Sherman, Hutchinson, KS. Poker Run stops include Buhler Gas Co., Miller Cycle Shop in Inman, Nickerson Community Center, Great Plains Motorsports in South Hutchinson, and Bretz Injury Law in Hutchinson. The entry fee is $25/hand or $50 for three hands. Additional donations to the Cancer Council of Reno County will be accepted.

"We try to switch it up a little bit to get everybody involved," said Casey Ensz with Bretz Injury Law. "We like to get different businesses involved every time so we can get exposure to everybody around."

Prizes will be awarded to the winning hand, second best hand, and worst hand. Winning hand will receive 25% of the entry fees, second best hand will receive 15%, and worst hand will receive 10%. The remaining 50% will be donated to the Cancer Council of Reno County.

"It's gotten bigger every single year," Ensz said. "Our first year, we had a little over 50. Last year, we had around 70. With other poker runs that we run, it keeps going up, as well. We had 120 at our last run. We're hoping for quite a few here. It's probably going to depend on that weather."

Door prizes and a free meal will be provided following the run. Raffles will be held at the last stop, Bretz Injury Law, with proceeds benefitting the Cancer Council of Reno County. All vehicles are welcome.

3rd Annual Cruise for the Cure Poker Run is Saturday

LYONS, Kan. —U.S. Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01) will host town halls next Wednesday, April 24, as part of his annual 60-county Mann Listening Tour.

Topics that will likely be covered are the nation's debt, the upcoming Farm Bill, border security and funding for allies like Israel and Ukraine.

One of those town halls will be in Rice County.

The Rice County town hall will be in the&nbsp;Courthouse Commission Chambers at 101 West Commercial in Lyons at 8 a.m.

Mann will also hold town halls in Ellsworth, Barton, Pawnee and Ford counties that day.

Mann to hold Rice County town hall Wednesday

NEWTON, Kan. — This interchange improvement and bridge replacement project is in the preliminary design phase and includes replacement of the U.S. 50 bridge over Meridian Road and the BNSF Railway southwest of Newton in Harvey County. 

Replacement of the existing bridge is necessary, as the structure is past its useful design life. Additional benefits include reducing future maintenance and enhancing safety. This project was identified as a top regional priority during Local Consult community meetings in fall of 2023 and as a result, has been selected for the IKE development pipeline. 

A construction timeline will not be established until there is community support for the proposed project design.&nbsp; 

KDOT is hosting a public meeting&nbsp;at&nbsp;<a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/YvFWeL4kiocAp51N9" target="_blank">Sand Creek Event Center</a>&nbsp;in Newton, KS (1601 S Anderson Avenue, Newton, KS 67114).&nbsp;The event is from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on&nbsp;Thursday, May 2.

There will be no formal presentation.&nbsp;

Meeting in Newton next month on US 50 and Meridian project

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 200 block of South Main Street on the west side.

In 1898, the Rock Island Lumber &amp; Coal Company started at 213 S. Main with A.J. Renner as manager. The first photo shows this facility in 1908 after loading a customer's wagon. 

The second photo shows the business on Sept. 29, 1917, as the Reno County Boys were parading in front of it, to go off to WW1 and load onto the troop trains at the Missouri-Pacific tracks at Avenue C and Main.

Between 1923 and 1928, the building housed the Houston-Zimmerman Lumber Co. with Charles Zimmerman as manager.

Between 1929 and 1931, The J.I. Case Co. Manufacturers of agricultural equipment in Racine, Wisconsin, used it as their sale and showroom floor.

Between 1931 and 1961, this location was the Reno Implement Co.

Between 1963 and 1984, it housed the Reno Hardware Co. owned by R.B. Langenwalter.

In 1985, Langenwalter sold the business's two locations to Frank Westlake out of Kansas City and it is still Westlake Ace Hardware today. The third photo shows that building today. 

Westlake now owns 160 stores in 12 states with its home base at 14000 Marshall Dr., Lenexa, Kansas.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Rock Island Lumber - Vol. 66

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Director of Parks and Facilities Justin Combs accepted the proclamation for Arbor Day at Tuesday's Hutchinson City Council meeting and spoke briefly about what his department will be doing to commemorate the occasion.

"This Friday, for the ninth year in a row, we'll be planting trees at Orchard Park with fourth graders," Combs said. "We'll plant 11 trees this year. The trees were provided by the tree board, they do have funds at the community foundation, the trees for forever fund. Trees were purchased through that. From 1 to 2 p.m. this Friday at Orchard Park. The event is sponsored by City Beverage. They provide refreshments for all the kids and adult volunteers after the event."

Combs told Hutch Post in an email the fourth graders will be from Plum Creek Elementary and they are doing the event on the 19th instead of the 26th because Buhler doesn't have school on the 26th. Traditionally, Arbor Day is the fourth Friday in April.

RENO COUNTY — The Reno County Sheriff's Office has been getting calls in their back office stating that people have been contacted by a "Detective Corey Graber with the Reno County Sheriff's Office." He is apparently stating that individuals, "are in a lot of trouble."&nbsp;&nbsp;

This is a scam. The Reno County Sheriff's Office does not call regarding warrants. Hang up. Don't give out any personal information. If you need to double-check, you initiate a call to (620) 694-2735 if you have any questions.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Wesley Towers recognized its occupational therapists this week in honor of Occupational Therapy Month.

Megan has been an occupational therapist for 26 years. She has worked in hospitals, long-term care, inpatient/outpatient rehab, and home health services. She truly enjoys helping people gain their independence and get back to their lives and homes after a surgery or health issue. She has been married to her husband Jim for 30 years and has 1 son and 3 daughters.

Alta has lived in Hutchinson for 23 years. She has been involved in healthcare since 2007. She graduated from Brown Mackie College in Salina and has worked as a certified occupational therapist assistant for 10 years, mostly in skilled nursing settings. She enjoys helping residents and patients return to their daily lives and activities.

Sammy has been a licensed occupational therapist for 11 years. Four of those were spent in his home country of India.
