WICHITA — The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Wind Advisory from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

South winds will be sustained from 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected in portions of central and south central Kansas.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects.

  Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may  result.

Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

Wind Advisory Wednesday afternoon

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. —Today is City Clerk Denise McCue's last day. 

The city office in South Hutchinson will be closed for a couple of hours to celebrate her retirement from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. 

McCue has been with the city for 20+ years. 

"We are so grateful to have had her," said City Administrator Joseph Turner. "Though we are sad she is leaving, we are incredibly happy for her and wish her a happy and healthy retirement."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Students entering grades 3-12 in 2023 can now register for the upcoming summer’s Cosmosphere camps. Registration opened to the public on October 1. Scholarships are available.

Half-day camps offer 3rd-5th&nbsp;graders the chance to learn about our solar system and about exploration of the Moon through hands-on science and teamwork activities. 5th&nbsp;and 6th&nbsp;grade students can create their own life form and explore the possibilities of environments suitable for life beyond Earth or enjoy camps with field trips that show science in action.

Cosmosphere’s overnight camps begin at 7th&nbsp;grade and continue through 12th&nbsp;grade. Middle and high schoolers meet camp alumni who are now aerospace professionals and enjoy astronaut training activities such as piloting aircraft, scuba, and collaborative science and engineering challenges. A simulated space mission using Cosmosphere’s authentic Mission Control and Astralis capsule is a peak learning experience. Excitement over the opportunities in Cosmosphere camps appears to be growing, based on high numbers of early registrations.

“We’re seeing more interest than ever,” said JoAnna Strecker, Cosmosphere’s vice president for education. “We have campers come from all over the country, and we try to help any family that needs support through scholarships. We want as many students as possible to experience the inspiration for learning and the life-long friendships found at Cosmosphere camps.”

Early registration benefits include savings for registrations paid in full and the opportunity to purchase a holiday gift bundle for campers. Scholarship applicants can apply with no money down. 2023 Cosmosphere Camps registration is open

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — August sales tax revenue for Reno County bounced up by more than $76,000 from the previous month. 

According to information from County Treasurer Brenda Kowitz, total receipts for the county topped out at $487,630. That is up by over $84,000 from the same month last year.

To date, the county has taken in a total of $3.592 million.

Sales tax collections for the month of August reflect shopping trends for the month of June.

County sales tax revenue up in latest report

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — <a href="https://www.hutchfirstnaz.org/church-online/">Today is the service</a> for the Nickerson teacher and coach killed in an accident in Louisville, Kentucky in July.

According to his <a href="https://www.elliottmortuary.com/obituary/william-trey-jones-iii">obituary from Elliott Mortuary</a>, the service for Trey Jones will be at 11 a.m. at First Church of the Nazarene at 4290 North Monroe in Hutchinson.

Jones, his wife Amy, and daughter Ava, along with the family’s youngest child were all hit by a motorist who drove up onto the sidewalk in the downtown area of Louisville while the Jones family was in Louisville for an AAU basketball tournament.

Ava Jones had signed a letter of intent to play basketball at the University of Iowa that was announced a few days before the accident.

The suspect, 33-year-old Michael Hurley of Lexington, Indiana, has been indicted by a grand jury in the case. Hurley admitted to police that he had just taken Oxycodone before the accident and failed a field test for narcotics at the scene.

Trey Jones funeral is today

YODER, Kan. — One of the great late summer traditions in Reno County kicks off Saturday morning with the annual Yoder Heritage Day celebration. As always it starts off with the pancake feed at 6 a.m. before a full day of activities begins.&nbsp;

You can start the day with the horse drawn plowing demonstration starting at 8 a.m. The parade begins at 10:30. Other activities include pony and buggy races, a foosball court, tractor pull and a draft horse show. Of course the day ends with a concert by Highway 14 at 5 p.m. and Rusty Rierson at 7 p.m. The celebration ends with the fireworks celebration at dusk. All activities are free.

Yoder Heritage Days is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran and NASA Administrator Bill Nelson will be guests of the Cosmosphere today, Aug 19.

The Hutch Chamber will host a breakfast reception with Nelson and Sen. Moran. Hutchinson has long been a community that supports NASA, space exploration and STEM education. The Chamber says it looks forward to showcasing the community and the Cosmosphere to the NASA administrator.

Breakfast will be from 7:30-8:15 a.m., with Nelson and Moran taking a tour of the Cosmosphere after the breakfast.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, Sen. Moran at Cosmosphere today

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man has been arrested on charges of 24 different counts including rape, kidnapping and sexual battery.

A press conference is being held in regard to former Hutchinson police officer Todd Wade Allen, who was booked into the Reno County Correctional Facility on a bond of $250,000.

The charges filed with the Reno County District Attorney include five counts of rape, two counts of kidnapping, nine counts of aggravated sexual battery and five counts of breach of privacy. 

The arrest is connected to a string of sexual assaults and prowler calls including several sexual assaults in Carey Park. According to Chief Jeff Hooper, the attacks happened while Allen was with the force.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Work is scheduled to begin on the Scott Boulevard bridge in South Hutchinson in the coming weeks.

According to Don Brittain with Reno County Public Works, contractors will close Scott Boulevard some time around Friday, July 8, and begin removing the existing structure Monday, July 11, if all goes as planned.

Brittain says, weather permitting, the bridge could be finished in about one month, although the contract allows for 60 working days to be completed.

The small span became a point of controversy when the city of South Hutch claimed the bridge, which had recently had its weight limit reduced by the state, belonged to the county and it was their responsibility. Both sides wrestled with the responsibility of the bridge until the county and city came up with a solution to the problem. The solution was the county would offer engineering services and expertise in getting the project done at the lowest price, and the city of South Hutchinson would pay for the bridge.

The bridge is necessary because it is the only way for county Public Works vehicles to get in and out of their facility without using South Hutchinson city streets. The city has said that traffic is causing unwanted wear and tear on the streets.

Originally, the estimated cost of replacing the bridge was around $700,000 — but the actual low bid on the project was $392,295. That does not include engineering services, which adds another $26,760 to the overall price tag.

The invocation will be delivered by Adam Wooten. The guest speaker for the ceremony will be Attorney General Derek Schmidt. Taps will be played by Art Sundquist and both the Reno County Sheriff's Department and HPD will make up the honor guard.

Local law enforcement who will be remembered Friday are Reno County Undersheriff Edward Metz, who died in 1901 when he was pushed under a train; Deputy Thomas Simpson Fowler, who was shot and killed by a burglary suspect in 1911; Officer Reason Sherman Monroe, who was fatally shot nine times while investigating a family disturbance in 1924; Police Lt. Shelby Comstock, who was shot and killed after stopping a vehicle in 1956; and Officer Kenneth M. Kennedy, who was shot while investigating liquor crimes in 1972.

A barbecue will be available for law enforcement at SW Bricktown Park following the ceremony.

Peace Officers Memorial ceremony today at 11

Junior college basketball's winningest team is going high-octane.

Tommy DeSalme was named the 15th head coach in the 90-year history of Blue Dragon Men's Basketball. DeSalme was introduced to Blue Dragon Nation by Athletic Director Josh Gooch at a news conference on Thursday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Hutchinson will be DeSalme's fifth stop as a head coach, his third in the Jayhawk Conference. DeSalme has amassed an overall coaching record of 316-233 in 20 seasons coaching at Cowley College (12 seasons), Independence Community College (2 seasons), Kansas Wesleyan University (1 season) and Sterling College (5 seasons).

DeSalme moves into the position vacated by Steve Eck, who left the Blue Dragons in April after 12 seasons as the winningest head coach in Hutchinson history. Eck ranks No. 3 in all-time Jayhawk Conference coaching wins and No. 5 in Region VI coaching wins.

With 284 KJCCC/Region VI victories at Cowley and Independence, DeSalme ranks seventh in Jayhawk coaching wins and ninth in Region VI coaching victories.

"What an incredible honor it is for me to have this opportunity," DeSalme said. "This gymnasium is a cathedral. This is such a special place. The town of Hutchinson is a special place and it's an honor for me to be the next head coach here."

Previous to Hutchinson, DeSalme spent 12 seasons at Cowley, becoming that program's winningest coach with a record of 239-143.

But it's his last two seasons that DeSalme put Tiger Basketball on the map as a Region VI and national contender.

DeSalme transformed the Tigers into an entertaining, high-scoring, high-pressure defensive group that set numerous scoring and 3-point shooting records, not to mention a lot of victories and deep postseason runs.

"Those who follow Jayhawk Conference basketball and those who attended the NJCAA Tournament know the brand of basketball that Coach DeSalme is known for," Gooch said. "It's a fast-paced aggressive style that players love to play and fans love to watch. That's what we are in for."

DeSalme's 2021 Cowley team was the No. 2 scoring offense in the NJCAA at 119.0 points per game. The Tigers reached the century mark 21 times, including a Cowley school record 143 points against Dodge City. The 2021 Tigers averaged 14.1 3-point goals and 38 3-point attempts per game, both of those marks led the NJCAA. Cowley had 10 or more 3-pointers 20 times in 2021, breaking the 20 mark four times, including a team record 25 against Dodge City.

Under DeSalme, the 2021 Tigers posted a 24-5 overall record, tied for the Jayhawk East championship, won the Region VI Tournament for the first time since 1957 and advanced all the way to the NJCAA Tournament championship game where Cowley fell to Jayhawk East rival Coffeyville in the finals.

In 2020, the 26-6 Tigers led the NJCAA in scoring at 109.8 points per game. Cowley won the Jayhawk East championship and advanced to the Region VI Tournament semifinals. Cowley was named as an at-large selection for the NJCAA Tournament, but the championships were canceled because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

"Three years ago, we had a team at Cowley that way overachieved, but couldn't shoot the ball, DeSalme said when asked about why he changed his style of play. "I was the king of 61-60 games and I was done with those. I wanted to play faster pace. It's a fun style.

"It allows you to play a different style. You don't have to wait to get a 6-9, 6-10 guy down in the front of the rim. It makes other teams worry about you."

Over his 12 full seasons at Cowley, DeSalme was named the league's Coach of the Year twice (2010, 2021). Cowley won or tied for three Jayhawk East titles (2010, 2020, 2021), played in two Region VI Tournament championship games (2012, 2021) and reached the regional semifinals five times (2011, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2021).

"What I learned about him through the interview process is his passion for student-athletes and the importance for them to be prepared in the classroom," Gooch said. "Coach DeSalme understands the importance of Blue Dragon Basketball in this community."

DeSalme mentored two Jayhawk East MVPs – Tyrus McGee in 2011, Dalen Ridgnal in 2021, both whom were also first-team NJCAA All-Americans in those seasons. Ridgnal was also a third-team All-American in 2020. DeSalme also coached three Jayhawk East Freshmen of the Year, one Defensive Player of the Year, 29 all-conference players and eight first-team all-league selections.

DeSalme's first KJCCC stop was at Independence Community College in 2008 and 2009. DeSalme had a record of 45-19 with the Pirates. His first Independence team was ranked as high as No. 16 in the NJCAA Rankings and finished second in the Jayhawk East with a 16-2 record. Antonio Henson was the 2008 Jayhawk East MVP and second-team NJCAA All-American.

Previous to Independence, DeSalme spent one highly successful season at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina in 2007. The Coyotes went 28-4 record, won the KCAC regular-season and postseason titles, earned a No. 6 national ranking and put together a 19-game winning streak. KWU earned a berth in the NAIA National Tournament and advanced to the second round. The 28 victories also broke a school record for most victories in a season. DeSalme was named KCAC Coach of the Year. His Coyotes also led the nation in scoring defense in 2017.

Prior to Kansas Wesleyan, DeSalme spent his first five seasons as a head coach at Sterling College, where he turned the Warriors program around. DeSalme was 84-67 at Sterling, compiling a 60-30 record in KCAC regular-season play. Sterling finished second place in the KCAC for four consecutive seasons, and earned a berth to the NAIA Division II National Tournament two times over a three-year span (2004 and 2006). The 2004 Warriors won the KCAC postseason tournament which sent Sterling to its first-ever NAIA National Tournament appearance. Under DeSalme's leadership, Sterling twice tied the school record for most victories in a season with 18 in 2002 and 2005.

DeSalme started his coaching career as an assistant at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. DeSalme was responsible for recruiting as well as eligibility and academic progress. While at SOSU, the Savage Storm captured two Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference titles in 1996 and 1997. The team also made two trips to the NAIA Division I National Championships, finishing with a No. 5 ranking in the NAIA Division I final poll in 1997 with an overall record of 27-4.

"I hope to continue the run here and keep putting up banners," DeSalme said.

DeSalme earned his Master of Education from Southeastern Oklahoma State in 1999, after earning his Bachelor degree in Education from SOSU in 1995.

DeSalme played collegiate ball at SOSU, where he was a four-year letter winner and a two-year starter.

A native of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, DeSalme earned all-state, all-region and all-district honors as a senior at Bartlesville High. As a three-year letter winner, he helped guide Bartlesville to a pair of state titles in 1989 and 1991.

Hutch Post Salutes the Haven High School Class of 2020

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — February is American Heart Month and Hutchinson Regional Medical Center has joined healthcare organizations nationwide in observance of this annual event.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading global cause of death, accounting for more than 17.6 million deaths per year. In the United States, someone suffers a heart attack every 40 seconds. Approximately 650,000 Americans die each year from heart disease, which is equal to one in every four deaths, and more than 4,000 Americans are on a waiting list to receive a heart transplant.

Although some Americans blame family history and heredity as the main cause for heart disease, for many the blame can be traced to an unhealthy lifestyle including poor eating habits and a lack of exercise.

For many Americans, an exercise program of no more than a couple hours a week may produce results exceeding anyone’s expectations. Some opt to take medications to avoid an unhealthy heart, but studies show that medication without changing lifestyle achieves little.

Dr. Frank Booth, an exercise physiologist at the University of Missouri, coined the phrase “Sedentary Death Syndrome.” Dr. Booth’s clever use of words sums up the nation’s growing epidemic of a lack of physical activity and its relationship to chronic and preventable disease and, in particular, those dealing with the heart.

Inactivity may lead to obesity, an issue that has skyrocketed during the past 35 years. Nearly three-fourths of Americans are overweight. Today, America holds the unwanted distinction as the world’s most obese nation. On the other hand, exercise combined with weight reduction may significantly reduce premature mortality. In some cases, weight reduction can cure sleep apnea, reduce the onset of type II diabetes, and improve depressive disorders. Conditions associated with inactivity include an increased risk of mortality through strokes, diabetes, neurological disorders, depression, arthritis and heart disease. Some forms of cancer can be tied to obesity.

The late exercise guru Jack LaLanne summed up the problem that many older people experience. “Many people sit around all day long and don’t get exercise. Their muscles deteriorate, they lose their strength, their energy, vitality by inactivity,” LaLanne said.

The best exercise program is one that you will continue to do. Exercise may be as simple as playing a round of golf, bowling, gardening, basketball or biking. Other options are strength training and flexibility. Adults will benefit from 150 minutes of weekly exercise; 75 minutes should be a vigorous activity.

During the past year, approximately 2,000 persons, including patients from the far western regions of the state, entrusted their heart health to the Heart &amp; Vascular Center at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Our staff witnesses the devastating effects of heart disease; however, we spend every day helping patients detect, manage, and treat heart disease. We offer stress tests and heart catheterization to aid in identifying heart disease.

The American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation accredited Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation unit helps heart attack survivors thrive and reduce the risk of recurrent visits to the hospital. Our cardiovascular catheterization lab and surgery unit have state-of-the-art equipment and highly trained staff to ensure the best possible outcome for our patients. From minimally invasive drug-eluting stents and orbital atherectomy, to surgical interventions such as coronary bypass and valve replacements, our care encompasses all of your cardiac needs. We also utilize the Impella device, a small heart pump that helps support the patient during high risk coronary stenting, when the heart is too weak to do the work itself. We have extensive experience treating peripheral arterial disease and performing limb salvage procedures to avoid amputation. The Heart &amp; Vascular Center continually strives for excellence in cardiovascular care for our own and surrounding communities.

The greatest gift we can give ourselves is the gift of good health and it is never to soon or too late to start an exercise program. Try to stay active to reduce risk of heart trouble

<p><img src="https://media.eaglewebservices.com/public/2019/12/1575474300837.jpeg"></p><p><br></p><p>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Trinity United Methodist Church will once again host the Taste of Hutchinson, The Men Cook. This year’s event is set for Jan. 25 at the Hutchinson Art Center.</p><p><br></p><p>The event raises funds for Salthawk Community Support. Salthawk Community Support is a ministry of Hutchinson Trinity United Methodist Church and provides necessities for students in need of things like clothing, shoes, lunch funds and transportation.</p><p><br></p><p>Last year, 25 men provided their best recipes for guests to sample. More than $5,300 was raised for SCS. This year, the event will be divided into three categories: appetizer, main course dishes and dessert. Guests will be able to sample all of the dishes and then vote for their favorite dish. Taste of Hutchinson, The Men Cook set for January

<p><img src="https://media.eaglewebservices.com/public/2019/12/1575648108766.jpeg"></p><p>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Boys &amp; Girls Club of Hutchinson announced Friday that Jenna Lightsey has been named the 2020 Youth of the Year.</p><p><br></p><p>As the local Youth of the Year, Jenna will serve as an ambassador for all teens in the local club, receive a $1,000 college scholarship thanks to Heartland Credit Union, and will go on to compete in the state Youth of the Year competition.</p><p><br></p><p>Jenna is a senior at Hutchinson High School. She has been a club member for 11 years and works as a Vision Leader at the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs. She is currently studying for her CNA and CMA licenses and plans to become an elementary school teacher. Jenna believes everyone should have the chance to be successful and happy.</p><p><br></p><p>“Being named Youth of the Year is a lifelong honor,” Chief Professional Officer Skip Wilson said. “As the Hutchinson Youth of the Year, Jenna will serve as an ambassador and role model for our young people, sharing her inspiring story and leading the way to transform our club and community for the better.”</p><p><br></p><p>D’Naeya Gray, Sadye Patterson and Catelyn Washington were each named as runners-up. Jose Ledezma, a freshman at Hutchinson High School, was recognized as the Junior Youth of the Year.</p>

Lightsey named Youth of the Year

<p><img src="https://media.eaglewebservices.com/public/2019/12/1575497567273.jpeg"></p><p>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A special event is this Saturday to benefit BrightHouse.</p><p><br></p><p>Volunteers with the organization — with the help of several local businesses and <a href="http://www.khmyfm.com/default.asp?sec_id=1053">My 93-1</a> — will host a Stuff the Bus campaign at Dillons Marketplace. The event begins at 9 a.m. and runs until 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><p>Those wishing to donate can get a list of items needed most from one of the volunteers Saturday. Cash and Dillons gift cards can also be donated.</p><p><br></p><p>All proceeds and items donated go to BrightHouse, which provides shelter and programs to benefit victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.</p>
