A pair of freshmen had memorable debuts and the No. 18-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team earned its fourth-straight season-opening victory on Sunday morning against Northeastern Junior College.

The Blue Dragons scored six first-half goals and rolled to a 7-0 victory over the Plainswomen at the Salthawk Sports Complex. The game was moved up to 10 a.m. to avoid the intense summer heat.

The 1-0 Blue Dragons open Jayhawk Conference play on Wednesday at Garden City with a scheduled 6 p.m. kickoff at Broncbuster Stadium.

The victory was the 248th in the coaching career of Hutchinson head coach Sammy Lane. The Blue Dragons are now 15-4-0 all-time in season openers.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/marx_katharina_hedq">Katharina Marx</a>&nbsp;had a five-point game in her Blue Dragon debut with a goal and three assists. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/edwards_kaitlyn_56gt">Kaitlyn Edwards</a>&nbsp;scored two goals for a four-point game as the Blue Dragons out-shot NJC 24-1 and held the Plainswomen to no shots on goal.

Marx's five points are the most by a Blue Dragon making their debut since Sheena Nicol had a four-point game against North Lake College in the 2016 opener. She is also the 15th Blue Dragon to have three assists in one half.

Edwards became the first Blue Dragon to have a multi-goal game in their Blue Dragon debut since Sydney Blackwell had two goals against Northeast Nebraska in 2018.

Sophomores&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/delgado_adriana_03x3">Adriana Delgado</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/wyatt_jayda_vgup">Jayda Wyatt</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/mayumi_tatiana_l7lq">Tatiana Mayumi</a>, along with freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/azevedo_maria_c1zz">Maria Azevedo</a>&nbsp;all scored goals for Hutchinson on Sunday.

Freshman goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/slothower_karsyn_3puo">Karsyn Slothower</a>&nbsp;earned her first career shutout and didn't have to make a save.

Delgado started the scoring for the Dragons when working on the left side of the penalty box, she made several 1-on-1 moves to gain some space and ripped a shot from 16 yards out to score an unassisted goal at the 33:21 mark of the first half and a 1-0 lead.

Just 1 minute, 12 seconds later, Mayumi found herself with a nearly wide-open net after a Marx cross from the right side. Mayumi scored to make it 2-0 with 32:09 to play. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/hoy_destiny_838y">Destiny Hoy</a>&nbsp;was credited with a secondary assist.

The Dragons made it 3-0 when Marx was working on the right side of the goal. She made a quick drive to the net and flicked a pass to a driving Azevedo, who scored for a 3-0 lead with 27:19 to play in the first half.

Edwards scored the fourth and fifth goals of the half. First, she took a long pass from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/brungardt_kendra_vdzj">Kendra Brungardt</a>&nbsp;and lobbed a shot from about 35-yards out over the head of NJC keeper Jasmine Enright with 24:25 to play in the half. Edwards tallied her second goal on Marx's third assist of the half for a 5-0 lead with 11:42 left in the half.

Marx's first goal came with 10:45 remaining. Mailee Harnisch was credited with the assist.

The Dragons led 6-0 at halftime, outshooting NJC 17-1 in the opening 45 minutes.

The only goal of the second half came from a Wyatt penalty kick five minutes into the half for a 7-0 lead.

This&nbsp;year's Shrine Bowl will be played at Lewis Field Stadium, at Fort Hays State University, Saturday, July 15th at 7 p.m.&nbsp; 2023 will mark the 50th year of the Shrine Bowl.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Players from the area that were chosen&nbsp;this year include Hutchinson High standout Noah Khokhar.&nbsp; Also selected on the West squad, Eli Brunk from Inman, Sam Becker of McPherson and Jake Proctor of Hesston.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays High’s Tony Crough will head coach the West. His assistants will be Joe Schartz (6A – Manhattan), Mark Sandbo (5A – Salina Central), Jace Pavlovich (4A – McPherson), Marc Henry (3A – Clay Center), Tanner Hageman (2A – Kingman), and Matt Biehler (1A – Conway Springs).

All Shrine Bowl events are produced and presented to benefit Shriners Children’s. In 2022, the Kansas Shrine Bowl donated $125,000 to Shriners Children’s and has given more than $3.7M since 1974. Shriners Children’s offers care for a range of orthopedic issues, as well as care for burn injuries, craniofacial conditions, spine care and spinal cord injuries, colorectal and gastrointestinal care, and sports medicine. Children up to the age of 18 are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients' ability to pay.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes moved into the rarest of company Sunday, joining Tom Brady and Drew Brees as the only quarterbacks with multiple 5,000-yard passing seasons, and the Chiefs overcame another sloppy start to beat the Broncos for the 15th consecutive time and stay alive for the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

So everything must be good in Kansas City, right?

“There's not a lot satisfying for me,” Mahomes said shortly after the 27-24 victory.

There was the pick he threw in the end zone and the mechanics that went awry in the second half. There was the fumbled punt return that led to a Denver touchdown, a sloppy snap on a point-after attempt and even a blocked field goal.

Yet the Chiefs (13-3) still managed to escape a 17-13 third-quarter deficit and rally for their fourth consecutive win.

“When I don't have my best stuff and guys step up and we still win football games,” said Mahomes, who nevertheless finished with 328 yards passing and three touchdowns, “that's a good thing.”

Jerick McKinnon had two touchdown catches while Blake Bell and Isiah Pacheco also scored for the Chiefs, who began the day tied with Buffalo for the best record in the AFC; the Bills play Cincinnati on Monday night.

“We'll watch it,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said with a smile.

For a while the Broncos (4-12) looked as if they might cap a chaotic week that began with the firing of first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett in a stunning victory. But a late letdown by one of the league's best defenses, an another interception from embattled quarterback Russell Wilson, resulted in the first loss for interim coach Jerry Rosburg.

“I saw players and coaches digging in to do all they could possibly do to win that game,” he said. “That all said, it wasn't good enough. It wasn't good enough and I'm heartbroken for those guys because they deserve a win.”

Wilson threw for 222 yards and a touchdown while also running for a pair of scores, the second of them — after two costly penalties on the Kansas City defense — pulling Denver within 27-24 with 6:14 left in the game.

The Broncos got the ball back with just under four minutes to go, too, and picked up a quick first down. But the Kansas City defense stiffened near midfield, and Chris Jones sacked Wilson on fourth-and-2 to effectively end the game.

The Chiefs' sluggish start against the downtrodden Broncos wasn't all that surprising. They've habitually played down to the opposition, whether it was in their overtime win at Houston or their 34-28 victory over the Broncos three weeks ago.

But the Chiefs also have proven over the years their ability to strike quickly, and they did that after falling behind for the first time Sunday. Mahomes answered with long passes to Toney and McKinnon, a penalty on third down gave them a fresh set of downs, and McKinnon turned a screen pass into a touchdown reception for the fifth straight game.

That streak is the longest for an NFL running back since Bill Dudley of the Lions in 1947.

“If I would have told you I saw it was coming, nah,” McKinnon said, “but that's what you put the work in the offseason for, when you're opportunity comes you're ready for the moment.”

The Chiefs struggled to maintain momentum after halftime, though, going three-and-out on their first three possessions. And the Broncos, with their third play-caller of the season in offensive coordinator Justin Outten, capitalized with a 63-yard touchdown drive that gave them a 17-13 lead late in the third quarter.

Then the Chiefs began looking like the Chiefs. And the Broncos like the Broncos.

Mahomes led the AFC West champs briskly downfield before hitting Bell from 17 yards for his first regular-season touchdown catch. And on the very next play, Wilson threw a wobbler under pressure that L'Jarius Sneed picked off, setting up McKinnon's second touchdown catch of the day and his eighth in the past five games.

The Broncos scored in the fourth quarter to give themselves a chance before Kansas City put the game away.

“When you win and you don't feel like you play you best ball, that's a really good thing,” Mahomes said. “We have to find a way to, for four quarters, play our best football when we get to the playoffs. And I feel like we haven't done that.”

Mahomes improved to 11-0 against Denver, joining Andrew Luck (11-0 vs Tennessee) as the only QBs in the Super Bowl era with more than 10 wins and no losses against an opponent. ... The Chiefs' 15 straight wins over Denver is tied for the third-longest streak of any team against an opponent in NFL history. The Broncos have not won against the Chiefs since Sept. 17, 2015. ... Wilson ran for 27 yards, giving him 4,948 for his career and passing Randall Cunningham for third among quarterbacks.

Broncos: RB Marlon Mack (hamstring) left in the first quarter and LG Dalton Risner (elbow) in the third. CB Damarri Mathis went into the concussion protocol in the second. LB Baron Browning (back) and DL D.J. Jones (knee) were inactive.

Chiefs: LG Joe Thuney (ankle) left late in the third quarter and WR Skyy Moore (hand) in the fourth. Sneed also hurt his hip on his interception return in the fourth.

The Broncos conclude their season next Sunday against the Chargers.

🏀 Blue Dragon Men and Women's Basketball gets sweep of Colby

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Christian Pulisic scored while crashing headfirst into the goalkeeper in the 38th minute and the United States advanced to the knockout round of the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Iran on Tuesday in a politically charged rematch of their famous meeting a quarter-century ago.

Pulisic sprawled on the field and was lying in the goal for about three minutes as he received treatment from the U.S. staff. He reentered the game but was replaced at the start of the second half.

Back in the World Cup after missing the 2018 tournament, the U.S. opened with draws against Wales and England and needed a victory to move on to the round of 16.

The Americans finished second in Group B with five points, two behind England, and will play the Netherlands on Saturday with the chance to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.

“I always say it’s us against the world,” forward Tim Weah said. “No one believed the U.S. could play good football.”

Iran finished third with three points. The team has failed to advance in all six of its World Cup appearances.

There was heightened tension surrounding the match because of the strained relations between the United States and Iran’s Islamic government. Iran had famously upset the U.S. 2-1 in the 1998 tournament in France, eliminating the Americans.

Pregame protocols were normal, unlike the 1998 game, when Iranians presented the Americans with white flowers and the teams posed for a joint photo.

Raucous Iranian fans with horns and drums in the crowd of 42,127 filled the lower bowl behind one goal at Al Thumama Stadium and were far louder than the red-white-and-blue U.S. supporters at the other end and behind the American bench.

The U.S. outshot Iran 9-0 in the first half but didn’t break through until Pulisic came up with the big moment that a growing and increasingly demanding fan base back home had been pining for.

Weston McKennie lofted a pass from just past the center circle to Sergiño Dest at the edge of the 6-yard box. Dest headed the ball in front of the net on a bounce as Pulisic charged up the center of the field past Ramin Rezaeian and Majid Hosseiniand.

Turning his body to let the ball hit his right foot, Pulisic knocked the ball for his 22nd international goal and first in World Cup play. His momemtum carried him into goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, and Pulisic needed to be helped to his feet before going back in.

“Obviously we’re very thankful that he threw his body there,” McKennie said. “At the end it was a heart-drop sinking moment, but we got it done and we’re excited to still be here.”

Weah, who scored the Americans’ goal in the opening 1-1 draw with Wales, nearly doubled the lead in the seventh minute of first-half stoppage time but was ruled offside.

Brenden Aaronson replaced Pulisic at the start of the second half.

With England ahead of Wales, Iran knew if needed only a draw to advance and finally got its first shot at goalkeeper Matt Turner when Saman Ghoddos put a header over the crossbar in the 52nd minute. Saeid Ezatolahi put an open shot high and wide in the 70th and Morteza Pouraliganji’s diving header in the third minute of nine minutes of stoppage time went just wide and Walker Zimmerman cleared a loose ball in front of the open net in the ninth minute after Cameron Carter-Vickers got a slight hand on Mehdi Taremi.

“I hope that our fans and our people in Iran forgive us. I am just sorry,” Taremi said.

Cameron Carter-Vickers, a son of former NBA player Howard Carter, made his World Cup debut in place of Zimmerman and gave the U.S. an entirely Europe-based lineup for the first time ever in World Cup play.

The U.S. lineup averaged 24 years, 321 days, the youngest of any team at the tournament thus far and the youngest in the World Cup for the Americans since 1990. Yunus Musah turned 20, the first American to appear in a World Cup match on his birthday.

The U.S. is 1-4 against the Netherlands, all friendlies, overcoming a two-goal deficit to win 4-3 at Amsterdam in 2015.

Pulisic goal advances US in World Cup with 1-0 win over Iran

Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer sophomore forward Hadlie Lowe was named NJCAA 2nd-Team All-American on Tuesday.

The back-to-back Jayhawk West Most Valuable Player becomes the 14th player in team history to earn All-America honors and the first since Esther Karhayu was named to the second team in 2020/21.

Lowe, a sophomore from Wichita (Kapaun-Mt. Carmel High School), was the top scoring option for the Blue Dragons and posted career highs 20 goals, seven assists and 47 points. She had six game-winning goals this season. Her goal, assist and point totals all exceeded her stellar freshman year numbers.

Lowe ranked fourth in the NJCAA in game-winning goals, eighth in goals scored and ninth in points scored.

Lowe had the first of her three hat tricks this season in the opener against Western Nebraska on August 26. She then scored a career single-game high four goals against Dodge City on Oct. 8 and followed that with three goals against Cowley in a 3-1 victory.

After the four-goal game against Dodge City, Lowe was named the NJCAA Division I National Player of the Week. Lowe also earned two KJCCC Player of the Week honors in 2022.

Lowe had the game-winner in a 4-3 victory over Johnson County in the Region VI opening-round win over Johnson County.

Lowe is the 13th Blue Dragon to register a 20-goal season, the first since Jordan Downing and Jazmin Hartshorn both did so in 2016.

Lowe’s 38 career goals tie Jenny Yukich (2006-07) and Danielle Sheehy (2012) for sixth-most in program history. Her 85 career points tie her with Pearl Slattery (2010-12) for 10th place. Lowe’s 14 career game-winning goals ties a school record with Melissa Hetherington.

As a freshman, Lowe led the nation with eight-game winning goals.

Lowe is just the second Blue Dragon ever to earn Offensive Player of the Year honors in back-to-back seasons, joining Alicia Robinson (2010, 2011). This is the eighth time a Blue Dragon player has been named Offensive player of the Year.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. —Today is City Clerk Denise McCue's last day. 

The city office in South Hutchinson will be closed for a couple of hours to celebrate her retirement from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. 

McCue has been with the city for 20+ years. 

"We are so grateful to have had her," said City Administrator Joseph Turner. "Though we are sad she is leaving, we are incredibly happy for her and wish her a happy and healthy retirement."

2023 Cosmosphere Camps registration is open

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — August sales tax revenue for Reno County bounced up by more than $76,000 from the previous month. 

According to information from County Treasurer Brenda Kowitz, total receipts for the county topped out at $487,630. That is up by over $84,000 from the same month last year.

To date, the county has taken in a total of $3.592 million.

Sales tax collections for the month of August reflect shopping trends for the month of June.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — <a href="https://www.hutchfirstnaz.org/church-online/">Today is the service</a> for the Nickerson teacher and coach killed in an accident in Louisville, Kentucky in July.

According to his <a href="https://www.elliottmortuary.com/obituary/william-trey-jones-iii">obituary from Elliott Mortuary</a>, the service for Trey Jones will be at 11 a.m. at First Church of the Nazarene at 4290 North Monroe in Hutchinson.

Jones, his wife Amy, and daughter Ava, along with the family’s youngest child were all hit by a motorist who drove up onto the sidewalk in the downtown area of Louisville while the Jones family was in Louisville for an AAU basketball tournament.

Ava Jones had signed a letter of intent to play basketball at the University of Iowa that was announced a few days before the accident.

The suspect, 33-year-old Michael Hurley of Lexington, Indiana, has been indicted by a grand jury in the case. Hurley admitted to police that he had just taken Oxycodone before the accident and failed a field test for narcotics at the scene.

Trey Jones funeral is today

YODER, Kan. — One of the great late summer traditions in Reno County kicks off Saturday morning with the annual Yoder Heritage Day celebration. As always it starts off with the pancake feed at 6 a.m. before a full day of activities begins.&nbsp;

You can start the day with the horse drawn plowing demonstration starting at 8 a.m. The parade begins at 10:30. Other activities include pony and buggy races, a foosball court, tractor pull and a draft horse show. Of course the day ends with a concert by Highway 14 at 5 p.m. and Rusty Rierson at 7 p.m. The celebration ends with the fireworks celebration at dusk. All activities are free.

 </figure>YODER, Kan. — One of the great late summer traditions in Reno County kicks off Saturday morning with the annual Yoder Heritage Day celebration. As always it starts off with the pancake feed at 6 a.m. before a full day of activities begins.&nbsp;You can start the day with the horse drawn plowing demonstration starting at 8 a.m. The parade begins at 10:30. Other activities include pony and buggy races, a foosball court, tractor pull and a draft horse show. Of course the day ends with a concert by Highway 14 at 5 p.m. and Rusty Rierson at 7 p.m. The celebration ends with the fireworks celebration at dusk. Yoder Heritage Days is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran and NASA Administrator Bill Nelson will be guests of the Cosmosphere today, Aug 19.

The Hutch Chamber will host a breakfast reception with Nelson and Sen. Moran. Hutchinson has long been a community that supports NASA, space exploration and STEM education. The Chamber says it looks forward to showcasing the community and the Cosmosphere to the NASA administrator.

Breakfast will be from 7:30-8:15 a.m., with Nelson and Moran taking a tour of the Cosmosphere after the breakfast.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, Sen. Moran at Cosmosphere today

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man has been arrested on charges of 24 different counts including rape, kidnapping and sexual battery.

A press conference is being held in regard to former Hutchinson police officer Todd Wade Allen, who was booked into the Reno County Correctional Facility on a bond of $250,000.

The charges filed with the Reno County District Attorney include five counts of rape, two counts of kidnapping, nine counts of aggravated sexual battery and five counts of breach of privacy. 

The arrest is connected to a string of sexual assaults and prowler calls including several sexual assaults in Carey Park. According to Chief Jeff Hooper, the attacks happened while Allen was with the force.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Work is scheduled to begin on the Scott Boulevard bridge in South Hutchinson in the coming weeks.

According to Don Brittain with Reno County Public Works, contractors will close Scott Boulevard some time around Friday, July 8, and begin removing the existing structure Monday, July 11, if all goes as planned.

Brittain says, weather permitting, the bridge could be finished in about one month, although the contract allows for 60 working days to be completed.

The small span became a point of controversy when the city of South Hutch claimed the bridge, which had recently had its weight limit reduced by the state, belonged to the county and it was their responsibility. Both sides wrestled with the responsibility of the bridge until the county and city came up with a solution to the problem. The solution was the county would offer engineering services and expertise in getting the project done at the lowest price, and the city of South Hutchinson would pay for the bridge.

The bridge is necessary because it is the only way for county Public Works vehicles to get in and out of their facility without using South Hutchinson city streets. The city has said that traffic is causing unwanted wear and tear on the streets.

Originally, the estimated cost of replacing the bridge was around $700,000 — but the actual low bid on the project was $392,295. That does not include engineering services, which adds another $26,760 to the overall price tag.

Scott Blvd. bridge work to start July 11

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department is working two structure fires. The first fire was called in around 6:20 a.m. and involves a residence at 550 E. Ave. D. The second is at 1900 N. Monroe and was called in around 6:25 a.m.

UPDATE: HFD working 2 structure fires

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Today is the day local law enforcement observes Peace Officers Memorial Day. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. in front of the Hutchinson Police Department.

The invocation will be delivered by Adam Wooten. The guest speaker for the ceremony will be Attorney General Derek Schmidt. Taps will be played by Art Sundquist and both the Reno County Sheriff's Department and HPD will make up the honor guard.

Local law enforcement who will be remembered Friday are Reno County Undersheriff Edward Metz, who died in 1901 when he was pushed under a train; Deputy Thomas Simpson Fowler, who was shot and killed by a burglary suspect in 1911; Officer Reason Sherman Monroe, who was fatally shot nine times while investigating a family disturbance in 1924; Police Lt. Shelby Comstock, who was shot and killed after stopping a vehicle in 1956; and Officer Kenneth M. Kennedy, who was shot while investigating liquor crimes in 1972.

A barbecue will be available for law enforcement at SW Bricktown Park following the ceremony.

Junior college basketball's winningest team is going high-octane.

Tommy DeSalme was named the 15th head coach in the 90-year history of Blue Dragon Men's Basketball. DeSalme was introduced to Blue Dragon Nation by Athletic Director Josh Gooch at a news conference on Thursday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Hutchinson will be DeSalme's fifth stop as a head coach, his third in the Jayhawk Conference. DeSalme has amassed an overall coaching record of 316-233 in 20 seasons coaching at Cowley College (12 seasons), Independence Community College (2 seasons), Kansas Wesleyan University (1 season) and Sterling College (5 seasons).

DeSalme moves into the position vacated by Steve Eck, who left the Blue Dragons in April after 12 seasons as the winningest head coach in Hutchinson history. Eck ranks No. 3 in all-time Jayhawk Conference coaching wins and No. 5 in Region VI coaching wins.

With 284 KJCCC/Region VI victories at Cowley and Independence, DeSalme ranks seventh in Jayhawk coaching wins and ninth in Region VI coaching victories.

"What an incredible honor it is for me to have this opportunity," DeSalme said. "This gymnasium is a cathedral. This is such a special place. The town of Hutchinson is a special place and it's an honor for me to be the next head coach here."

Previous to Hutchinson, DeSalme spent 12 seasons at Cowley, becoming that program's winningest coach with a record of 239-143.

But it's his last two seasons that DeSalme put Tiger Basketball on the map as a Region VI and national contender.

DeSalme transformed the Tigers into an entertaining, high-scoring, high-pressure defensive group that set numerous scoring and 3-point shooting records, not to mention a lot of victories and deep postseason runs.

"It's a fast-paced aggressive style that players love to play and fans love to watch. That's what we are in for."DeSalme's 2021 Cowley team was the No. 2 scoring offense in the NJCAA at 119.0 points per game. The Tigers reached the century mark 21 times, including a Cowley school record 143 points against Dodge City. The 2021 Tigers averaged 14.1 3-point goals and 38 3-point attempts per game, both of those marks led the NJCAA. Cowley had 10 or more 3-pointers 20 times in 2021, breaking the 20 mark four times, including a team record 25 against Dodge City.Under DeSalme, the 2021 Tigers posted a 24-5 overall record, tied for the Jayhawk East championship, won the Region VI Tournament for the first time since 1957 and advanced all the way to the NJCAA Tournament championship game where Cowley fell to Jayhawk East rival Coffeyville in the finals.In 2020, the 26-6 Tigers led the NJCAA in scoring at 109.8 points per game. Cowley won the Jayhawk East championship and advanced to the Region VI Tournament semifinals. Cowley was named as an at-large selection for the NJCAA Tournament, but the championships were canceled because of the Coronavirus pandemic."Three years ago, we had a team at Cowley that way overachieved, but couldn't shoot the ball, DeSalme said when asked about why he changed his style of play. "I was the king of 61-60 games and I was done with those. I wanted to play faster pace. It's a fun style."It allows you to play a different style. You don't have to wait to get a 6-9, 6-10 guy down in the front of the rim. It makes other teams worry about you."Over his 12 full seasons at Cowley, DeSalme was named the league's Coach of the Year twice (2010, 2021). Cowley won or tied for three Jayhawk East titles (2010, 2020, 2021), played in two Region VI Tournament championship games (2012, 2021) and reached the regional semifinals five times (2011, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2021)."What I learned about him through the interview process is his passion for student-athletes and the importance for them to be prepared in the classroom," Gooch said. "Coach DeSalme understands the importance of Blue Dragon Basketball in this community."DeSalme mentored two Jayhawk East MVPs – Tyrus McGee in 2011, Dalen Ridgnal in 2021, both whom were also first-team NJCAA All-Americans in those seasons. Ridgnal was also a third-team All-American in 2020. DeSalme also coached three Jayhawk East Freshmen of the Year, one Defensive Player of the Year, 29 all-conference players and eight first-team all-league selections.DeSalme's first KJCCC stop was at Independence Community College in 2008 and 2009. DeSalme had a record of 45-19 with the Pirates. His first Independence team was ranked as high as No. 16 in the NJCAA Rankings and finished second in the Jayhawk East with a 16-2 record. Antonio Henson was the 2008 Jayhawk East MVP and second-team NJCAA All-American.Previous to Independence, DeSalme spent one highly successful season at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina in 2007. The Coyotes went 28-4 record, won the KCAC regular-season and postseason titles, earned a No. 6 national ranking and put together a 19-game winning streak. KWU earned a berth in the NAIA National Tournament and advanced to the second round. The 28 victories also broke a school record for most victories in a season. DeSalme was named KCAC Coach of the Year. His Coyotes also led the nation in scoring defense in 2017.Prior to Kansas Wesleyan, DeSalme spent his first five seasons as a head coach at Sterling College, where he turned the Warriors program around. DeSalme was 84-67 at Sterling, compiling a 60-30 record in KCAC regular-season play. Sterling finished second place in the KCAC for four consecutive seasons, and earned a berth to the NAIA Division II National Tournament two times over a three-year span (2004 and 2006). The 2004 Warriors won the KCAC postseason tournament which sent Sterling to its first-ever NAIA National Tournament appearance. Under DeSalme's leadership, Sterling twice tied the school record for most victories in a season with 18 in 2002 and 2005.DeSalme started his coaching career as an assistant at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. DeSalme was responsible for recruiting as well as eligibility and academic progress. While at SOSU, the Savage Storm captured two Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference titles in 1996 and 1997. The team also made two trips to the NAIA Division I National Championships, finishing with a No. 5 ranking in the NAIA Division I final poll in 1997 with an overall record of 27-4."I hope to continue the run here and keep putting up banners," DeSalme said.DeSalme earned his Master of Education from Southeastern Oklahoma State in 1999, after earning his Bachelor degree in Education from SOSU in 1995.DeSalme played collegiate ball at SOSU, where he was a four-year letter winner and a two-year starter.A native of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, DeSalme earned all-state, all-region and all-district honors as a senior at Bartlesville High.
