Nyla Jean Hobbs (Smith, 85, went to be with the Lord, Feb. 13, 2020.&nbsp; She was born Oct. 16, 1934 in rural Walnut, KS to Carney and Ruby Smith.&nbsp; A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Nyla was blessed with an infectious personality that brought joy to those around her.&nbsp; At the age of three months, Nyla’s father Carney passed away and she grew up with her single mother Ruby.&nbsp;

She graduated from Chanute Junior College and went on to achieve a Bachelor of Science degree at Emporia State Teachers College.&nbsp; Her work experiences included being a fire lookout in the mountains of Glacier National Park and teaching in a one room schoolhouse.&nbsp; Beautiful flowers and delicious meals (the best pies ever) were products of Nyla’s active life.&nbsp; As a faithful lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, Nyla demonstrated a love for missions and ministry to children, especially those in need.&nbsp;

Nyla was preceded in death by her mother Ruby. 

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Jack of Hesston, KS, son, Kent (Shari) Hobbs, daughters, Lori (George) Glover, Kara (Mike) Hoover, Jena Hobbs; thirteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. 

Visitation will be 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Miller-Ott Funeral Home in Hesston. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, February 16, 2020 at Hesston United Methodist Church. Steven graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1979.&nbsp; He was an optician with Singleton-Joyce Optical for 34 years.&nbsp; After it closed, Steven joined Grene Vision Optical Service. He was a loyal and dependable husband, son, brother, uncle, friend, and employee. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Hutchinson, and faithfully read his Bible and devotional every evening. The most important person in Steven’s life was God, with his family a close second.

On November 24, 2013, he legally married his life partner, Christopher M.M. D. P. Britton in Des Moines, IA.&nbsp;

Steven is survived by:&nbsp; his companion, soul mate, and husband of 30 years, Christopher of the home; mother, Alice Marie Hawkins; siblings, Doug Hawkins and wife Valerie, and Diane Ehling, all of Hutchinson; two nephews; one niece; several great-nephews and great-nieces; his beloved pooch, ‘Willow Grace’; and close friends, who were more like extended family, Todd and Susie Ray and James and Jeannette Richardson.

Hazel Whomans, 96, of Hutchinson, died February 10, 2020, at Good Samaritan Society, Hutchinson Village. She was born June 15, 1923, in Kingman, to Glenn William and Mary Elizabeth (Nowlan) Richardson.

Hazel was a 1941 graduate of Kingman High School and 1967 graduate of Tech School of Nursing. John and Hazel lived in Kingman, KS, from 1943 - 1974, Alamogordo, NM, from 1974 -1995, and then moved to Hutchinson in 1995.

She was a homemaker and retired Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Hazel was a Sunday School teacher, volunteer for Betty Dare Sunshine Auxiliary, Alamogordo, NM, and various other charities. She enjoyed family quilting bees, crocheting baby hats, and knitting blankets for the Salvation Army and hospital. Hazel was a member of South Hutchinson Christian Church.

On April 16, 1943, she married John William Whomans in Kingman. They shared over 58 years of marriage prior to his death on October 18, 2001.

Hazel is survived by: son, Robert E. (Mary Ann) Whomans of Newton; daughters, Marjorie M. Keezer of Newton, Mary Ann Yahnke of Norwich, and Joyce (Nelson) Lancaster of Hutchinson; sister-in-law, Doris Richardson of Winfield; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Edward F. ‘Ed’ Doherty, 98, of Hutchinson, died February 8, 2020, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson. He was born October 31, 1921, in Ashland, Wisconsin, the son of The Reverend E. S. Doherty and Elizabeth Anne (Skuce) Doherty.

Ed attended Haviland High School for three years, graduating from Bucklin High School in 1939. He was granted a B. A. degree from Kansas Wesleyan University in 1947, and a M. Ed. Degree from the University of Colorado in 1951. Ed also completed additional graduate studies at the University of Kansas. Ed was a Social Studies teacher and head basketball coach at Stockton and Anthony High Schools for six years. A resident of Hutchinson since 1955, he retired from Cessna Fluid Division, where Ed held the position of Director of Personnel and Planning.

On December 20, 1946, he married Hazel Fae Hurlbut in Salina, Kansas. They shared 66 years of marriage before her death on March 11, 2013.

Ed is survived by: daughters, Linda Hopwood and husband Jim, Spring Hill, and Janet Ellis and husband Richard, Hutchinson; granddaughters, Jennifer Hopwood and husband Tim Dickson of Omaha, NE, and Erica Hopwood of Manhattan, KS; grandson, Corey Ellis of Chicago, IL; and great-grandson, Theodore Dickson.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife, Hazel F. Doherty; sister, Rosaleen Murray; and great-granddaughter, Rosalie Dickson.

Ed was a United States Army Veteran of World War II, serving with the 412th Medical Collecting Co. in British and Dutch New Guinea, the Philippine Islands, and Japan. Ed was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson/ Reno County Chamber of Commerce (where he was elected twice to the Board of Directors, American Legion Lysle Rishel Post 68, Service Corps of Retired Executives, charter member of Hutchinson Civitan Club, where he served as their first President.

Ed was deeply involved in community service at local and state levels. He served as Drive Chairman for the Community Chest Organization. Based on that experience, he helped to create the task force which brought the establishment of the United Way of Reno County. He served the City of Hutchinson as Chairman of the Human Relations Council, City Planning Commission, and Board of Zoning Appeals. In addition, Ed was appointed to represent the Reno County Commission on the Board of Horizons Mental Health Center, serving one term as Chairman. He was on the Board of Hospice of Reno County, when it became an affiliate of Health Care, Inc. Ed was a founding member and early president of the Hutchinson Personnel Relations Council, which evolved into Central Kansas Society for Human Resource Management. Although Ed left the field of education as a teacher after six years, it remained a major interest both personally and professionally. The growth of the Cessna Fluid Power Division created major training demands that emphasized the need for increased emphasis on vocational education at both local and state levels. Working with the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Apprenticeship, Ed helped develop a training program at Cessna known as ‘Earn While You Learn’ that became a national model. When the Area Vocational- Technical School concept was created, Ed served on a three-county task force designed to bring one of the six schools allocated to Kansas to this area. He served for nine years on the General Advisory Committee of the Central Kansas Area Vocational-Technical School, which now operates as a division of Hutchinson Community College. The U.S. Congressional legislation, which created the Area Schools, also provided that each state must form a State Advisory Council for Vocational Technical Education, charged with evaluating progress within the state. Ed was appointed to the Kansas Council as an industry representative and was subsequently elected as its first chairman. During the 1980’s, he served as Chairman of the Education Committee of the Kansas Council of Commerce and Industry, and as a Trustee of Kansas Wesleyan University, where he chaired the Academic Affairs Committee.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, February 15, 2020, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Main, with The Reverend Dr. Kim Biery officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Private family inurnment will take place in the Fairlawn Burial Park Mausoleum, Hutchinson. John Lee Zielke, 89, formerly of Hesston, Kansas, passed away peacefully at his home in Shell Knob, Missouri, on February 7, 2020.

John was born on February 1, 1931 in Hutchinson, Kansas to John W. and Dora Froese Zielke. He graduated from Buhler High School, Buhler, Kansas in 1948 and attended Hutchinson Community College. John played on the 1947 and 1948 state championship basketball teams. These teams were later inducted into the Kansas Athletic Hall of Fame.

After college, John pursued his interest in farming. In the mid 1950’s he began a long career at Hesston Corporation as Systems Engineer.

On September 30, 1951, John was united in marriage to June Josephine Froese. She preceded him in death on May 9, 2001. This union was blessed with four children; Kathie, Karen, John A. and James. John and June made their home in Hesston for many years.

On March 23, 2003 he married Myrna Wells at Shell Knob, Missouri, where they made their home until his death. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include: wife Myrna, of the home; daughters Kathie Keimig (Michael, Sterling, Kansas; Karen Zumwalt (David, Wichita, Kansas; sons John A. Zielke (Heidi, Hesston, Kansas; James K. Zielke (Patti, Weddington, North Carolina; stepdaughter Sharon Winsler (Pat, Shell Knob, Missouri; stepson; Ron Wells (Connie, Topeka, Kansas; sisters Betty Campbell, Lakeway, Texas; Connie Panushka, Lakewood, Colorado; brother R. Keith Zielke (Diane, Lakewood, Colorado; 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren , 7 step grandchildren, 11 step great grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp; Preceding him in death were parents John W. Zielke and Dora Froese Zielke.

A memorial service will be at 11:00am on Wednesday, February 12 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Shell Knob, Missouri with Pastor Peggy Wobbema officiating. A graveside service will be at 1:00pm on Friday, February 14 at the Buhler Municipal Cemetery, Buhler, Kansas. Cremation arrangements are under direction of Fohn Funeral Home in Shell Knob.

Gene Yoder, 93, passed away Feb. 6, 2020, at Schowalter Villa. He passed peacefully with Beth holding his hand. He was born Gene Yoder, in McPherson, Kansas June 29, 1926.

He married Dorothy Miller on April 9, 1949.

He is survived by: his children Ken Yoder, Brent (Carla) Yoder, and Beth (Keith) Hostetler; grandchildren, Tracy Yoder-Feit, James Reardon, Mike and Kyle Yoder, Kelsey Ronan, Colin Click, and Alex and Sara Hostetler; great-grandson, Aidan Yoder; and his brother, Dale Yoder.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Dorothy and his parents Lawrence and Orpha Yoder and sister Vesta Giltner.

Gene had a strong love for his family, friends and fishing. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Gene was a member of the Hesston Mennonite Church.

Luella Jane Regier, 88, passed away January 31, 2020 at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, Buhler. She was born July 4, 1931 at Rushville, Nebraska, the daughter of Lawrence and Ruby (Westervelt) Holmes. Jane graduated from Creighton Nebraska High School with the class of 1948.&nbsp; She attended Grace Bible Institute of Omaha, Nebraska, Bethel College at Newton, Kansas and received her registered nursing degree from Bethel Deaconess Hospital in 1958.&nbsp; Jane was a homemaker and had a passion for quilting, sewing and gardening.

On October 4, 1958 she married Leland J. Regier at Creighton, Nebraska. He preceded her in death on February 5, 2014.

Survivors include her children, Steven Regier of Fresno, CA.,Thomas Regier of Hutchinson, KS., and James (Tracy) Regier of Overland Park, KS., five grandchildren and one great-grandson.

She is also preceded in death by her son, Paul; and sister, Mildred Nelson.

Eric Michael Schmidt, 34, died February 7, 2020, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born January 5, 1986, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Paul and Colleen (Butler) Schmidt.

Eric was a graduate of Norwin High School, North Huntingdon, PA, and WyoTech, Blairsville, PA. He was employed at Safelite Auto Glass, Hutchinson, and a member of First Church of the Nazarene, Hutchinson.

On July 13, 2013, he married Victoria Swenson in Boswell, PA. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Julia and Nathan.

Eric is survived by: his wife, Victoria Schmidt of Pretty Prairie, KS; children, Julia and Nathan of the home; parents, Paul and Colleen Schmidt of North Huntingdon, PA; parents-in-law, Michael and Gayle Swenson of Yoder, KS; grandmother, Lois Schmidt; and aunts, Kathleen, Patti Jo, and Patricia.

He was preceded in death by: his grandfather, Paul W. Schmidt; grandmother, Ethel Butler; and uncle, Lt. Colonel Bernard Meisel.

Michael graduated from Austin Catholic Preparatory School, Detroit, MI.&nbsp; He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Detroit and his master’s degree from the University of Michigan.&nbsp; Michael served as a school principal, before becoming a computer programmer for Accenture Consulting.&nbsp; He enjoyed stamp collecting.&nbsp; Michael was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Cave Creek, AZ, where he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

On June 23, 1973, he married Emily Dyer in Flint, MI.&nbsp;

Virgil Leroy Tucker, 73, died February 4, 2020, at his home. He was born May 2, 1946, in Winfield, the son of Carl W. and Audrey L. (Brittingham) Tucker.&nbsp; Virgil graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1964.&nbsp; He served in the U.S. Navy from 1966-1992, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer.

After returning to Hutchinson, Virgil attended HCTEA and studied automotive technology. He then taught automotive technology at HCTEA and Barton County Community College, in addition to working at AutoZone.

Virgil was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, AMVETS, and V.F.W. Bob Campbell Post #1361.

On March 29, 1975, he married Susan J. DeGraff in Chula Vista, CA. They shared 42 years of marriage before her death on November 22, 2017.

Survivors include: sons, Richard, Roger, Lee, Jack, Eric; daughter, Roxanna Cox; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Amber, Charlene, Carlene; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, February 10, 2020, at Elliott Chapel. Virgil Leroy Tucker | 1946 - 2020 |

Virginia Lee Brawner, 99, passed away February 3, 2020 at her home. 

Virginia was born October 13, 1920 in rural Hutchinson, KS, the daughter of George E. and Mary Anna Sears Bacon.

She attended rural Maguire Elementary School, Hutchinson High School and Grace Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated in 1941 as a Registered Nurse and worked a short time at Special Nursing before working as a First Aid nurse at Cessna Aircraft in Hutchinson. There she met Leo Brawner of Woodward, OK, and was married January 9, 1943, to this union they were blessed with four children, Bonnie, Anita, Lowell and Craig.

Virginia joined the Clay Valley Methodist Church and attended until about 1976, when she and Leo joined the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. She has been active in the church; teaching, signing in the choir, planning retreats and greeting and as a Recording Secretary; also a Delegate to Annual Conference for several years. 4-H was an important part of her family as they raised horned Herefords. Virginia was the Haven 4-H Community Leader for 10 years. In 1947, the family moved to Haven due to Leo’s failing health. Virginia worked in the Colonial Manor Nursing Center (also Haven Training Center) for 18 years; teaching Nurse Aid classes and became the Director of Nursing. She retired as a RN after 71 years. She was also a hospice volunteer of Reno County Hospice, secretary of Haven Tree Board and assisted Prairieland Food Program taking orders to those shut-in. More recently she has been a secretary, bookkeeper, caregiver and friend to all. 

Remember her smile and love for everyone. Her motive was “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” and be “more like Jesus”. Her prayers were simply “God bless everyone and keep us safe from evil and harm, heal those who are ill and comfort those who are grieving”. Today is a celebration with the Angles who saved her life in a train accident in March 2000 and have taken her to her new home in Heaven with Jesus. Don’t miss me, just remember me.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leo; a son, Lowell, a sister, Georganna Froestschner and son in law, Larry Norton.

Virginia was loved and cared for by many relatives, friends and her Pleasant Grove Church family. Virginia was born October 13, 1920 in rural Hutchinson, KS, the daughter of George E. and Mary Anna Sears Bacon.She attended rural Maguire Elementary School, Hutchinson High School and Grace Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated in 1941 as a Registered Nurse and worked a short time at Special Nursing before working as a First Aid nurse at Cessna Aircraft in Hutchinson. There she met Leo Brawner of Woodward, OK, and was married January 9, 1943, to this union they were blessed with four children, Bonnie, Anita, Lowell and Craig.Virginia joined the Clay Valley Methodist Church and attended until about 1976, when she and Leo joined the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. She has been active in the church; teaching, signing in the choir, planning retreats and greeting and as a Recording Secretary; also a Delegate to Annual Conference for several years. 4-H was an important part of her family as they raised horned Herefords. Virginia was the Haven 4-H Community Leader for 10 years. In 1947, the family moved to Haven due to Leo’s failing health. Virginia worked in the Colonial Manor Nursing Center (also Haven Training Center) for 18 years; teaching Nurse Aid classes and became the Director of Nursing. She retired as a RN after 71 years. She was also a hospice volunteer of Reno County Hospice, secretary of Haven Tree Board and assisted Prairieland Food Program taking orders to those shut-in. More recently she has been a secretary, bookkeeper, caregiver and friend to all. Remember her smile and love for everyone. Her motive was “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” and be “more like Jesus”. Her prayers were simply “God bless everyone and keep us safe from evil and harm, heal those who are ill and comfort those who are grieving”. Today is a celebration with the Angles who saved her life in a train accident in March 2000 and have taken her to her new home in Heaven with Jesus. Don’t miss me, just remember me.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leo; a son, Lowell, a sister, Georganna Froestschner and son in law, Larry Norton. William H. “Bill” Sellers III, passed away at his home on February 4, 2020 at the age of 67 after battling his recent diagnosed heart condition, Amyloidsosis.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his children Julia of Nashville, TN, William IV of Wichita, KS, and Marcus of Wichita, KS; his brother Michael Sellers of Hutchinson, KS; his grandchildren, Jalynn, Johnea, Marcus Jr, Tre, Journey, Chayce; his great grandchildren, Legacie and Legend, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Arlene and William Sellers Jr. and his brother, Jesse Sellers.

Bill was born in Hutchinson, KS, on June 30, 1952, and attended Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Jr College. After moving to Wichita, he began working at Cessna Aircraft Company. Bill recently retired after dedicating 44 years of service to his employment with Cessna. Wichita is where he also began his family with the mother of his children, Carla Joy.

Bill was a devoted father who was adored by his children and a proud “Papa” to his six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Bill was an avid sports enthusiast his entire life playing and coaching softball in a number of leagues, playing basketball in the Cessna League and running track until well after his 60’s. He also had a love of classic cars and often bought and restored them.

Anyone who knew Bill was familiar with his habit of making people laugh by teasing and joking with them. His visitation will be held at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave. Hutchinson, KS on Monday, February 10, 2020 from 1-7 p.m. His funeral service will be at the same location on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at 11 a.m. with Reverend Charles Crumble officiating. Carl Melvin Blackburn, 91, of Arlington, died February 3, 2020, at his home. He was born November 8, 1928, in Partridge, the son of Walter and Pearl (Parker) Blackburn. Carl served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a lifetime farmer and stockman in the Arlington area. Carl enjoyed collecting antique tractors and toy tractors.

On January 1, 1956, he married G. Pauline Killian in Newton. She died June 27, 2011.

Carl is survived by: children, Bill Blackburn (Janet, South Hutchinson, Lee Wayne Blackburn (Becky, Arlington, Susan Rogers, Kingman, Robert Blackburn (Laurie, Arlington; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Donna Isham, Blanket, TX; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife, Pauline; grandson, Troy Don Blackburn; brothers, Ralph, Charles, Alvin; sisters, Dorothy Piche and Maxine Boley.

On March 4, 1953, she married Rudolph ‘Rudy’ H. Brunholtz in Grand Island, NE. They shared over 56 years of marriage prior to his death on July 23, 2009.

Georgia is survived by: son, Tom (Cheryl) Brunholtz of McPherson; daughter, Saraleigh Monroe of Des Moines, IA; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Rudolph ‘Rudy’ H. Brunholtz; brother, Johnnie Rierson; and twin sister, Theta Rouse.

On October 29, 1950, she married George E. Childs in Colby, KS.&nbsp; They were united in marriage for over 69 years.

Bonnie is survived by: husband, George E. Childs of Hutchinson; daughter, Betty (Roy) Cox of Council Grove, KS; sons, Jim (Kris) Childs of Bruceton Mills, WV, David (Susie) Childs of Hutchinson, and Dan (Carla) Childs of Hutchinson; 15 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

Carolyn Bledsoe Hedge, 94, of Hutchinson, went home to be with the Lord at Hospice House, Hutchinson, on January 31, 2020, surrounded by family and friends. Carolyn left this world peacefully and was welcomed into the loving arms of her late husband, Howard. She was born January 22, 1926, in Winter Park, Florida, the daughter of O.Z. and Dollie (Fields) Bledsoe.

Carolyn met Howard L. Hedge while he was serving at Orlando Army Air Base in Orlando, FL, and they married on November 16, 1946, in New Almelo, KS, in Howard’s home county of Sheridan, KS. They moved to Hutchinson in 1961, where they raised their family together. She spent her life as a homemaker, who was beloved by her children and grandchildren.

A member of First Baptist Church, Carolyn worked tirelessly with the food, quilting, and military care package ministries. In recent years, she was an active volunteer at the Delos V. Smith Senior Center and Hutch Rec Senior Center at Elmdale Park. She lived to help others and worked selflessly for those in need. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, who considered the best part of her life to be the raising of herchildren. Her destiny and accomplishments were her dedication to God, family, and friends. Many family friends have fond memories of Hedge family water skiing trips to area lakes. She was a talented cook and seamstress, as well as a master quilter, with a work room created especially for her by her devoted husband. Carolyn will be remembered as a very loving, caring person, who’s generosity and faith in God were abundant.

She is survived by: son, Larry (Liz, Wichita; daughters, Lynda McCue (Terry, Hutchinson, Karen Boger (Dale, La Jolla, CA, and Virginia Frank (Robert, Salina; seven grandchildren, Brandi McFarland Jones, Serenity Hedge Lies, Sheri McCue Pollard, Erin Harmony Bish, Jacob Harmony (Erin, Jon Humiston (Whitney, and Joe Humiston (Ashley); 20 great-grandchildren, including Jake and Erin Harmony’s sons, Jake, Ian, Grant, Max and Owen, and Erin Harmony Bish’s sons, Christopher and Samuel and daughter, Shelbie Harmony, Topeka, KS. Shelbie’s children, Aubree, Ryder, and Kashton are Carolyn’s great-great-grandchildren.

Carolyn was preceded in death by: her husband (December 7, 2002); granddaughter, Stephanie McCue; parents; and four brothers and a sister.

(Bernard) Paul ‘The Candy Man’ Hiebert, 73, of South Hutchinson, died Friday, January 31, 2020. He was born July 23, 1947, in Hutchinson, to Bernard and Arlie (Taylor) Hiebert.

Paul was a 1965 graduate of Partridge High School, a member of South Hutchinson Christian Church, and retired from the City of South Hutchinson as Public Works Director. He had 25 years of service.

Some of his favorite pastimes were going to auctions, hunting, fishing, helping people and family.

He married Patricia Dianne Garwood, December 10, 2011, in Missouri. She survives.

Also surviving are: aunt, Phyllis Merkel of Hutchinson; children, Elizabeth Garwood and husband Mike, Devin Garwood and wife Jessica, both of Hutchinson, Jason Garwood and wife Lauren of Olathe, Anne Thompson and husband Chad of McPherson, Brian and wife Jill of Mt. He was born July 23, 1947, in Hutchinson, to Bernard and Arlie (Taylor) Hiebert.Paul was a 1965 graduate of Partridge High School, a member of South Hutchinson Christian Church, and retired from the City of South Hutchinson as Public Works Director. He had 25 years of service.Some of his favorite pastimes were going to auctions, hunting, fishing, helping people and family.He married Patricia Dianne Garwood, December 10, 2011, in Missouri. Carol Esther (Stoelting) Nicholson was born August 30, 1931, on her grandparents’ farm near Bristol, South Dakota, the third child of Edwin August and Rose Marie (Anderson) Stoelting.

When Carol was four, the family moved to Schaller, Iowa, and a year later to Sac City, Iowa, where she attended school and graduated in 1949. She then went to business school in Omaha, Nebraska. To earn part of her tuition, she was a nanny for a family in Omaha. After graduating, her first job was at Merchants Biscuit Company, which later became Keebler. It was there that she met her husband, Robert “Bob” Nicholson. They were married on March 28, 1954, in Sac City. Daughters Tara Sue and Lori Ann were born in Omaha. The family then moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, and from there to Woodward, Oklahoma, where son Bris Robert was born. He lived only three days. In May 1957, they moved to Ashland, Kansas, where daughters Jeri Lyn and Kira Lee and son Reid Alden were born. Reid lived one month and three days.

Carol and Bob owned and operated the Ashland Nursing Home for many years. Later, Carol worked at Stockgrowers State Bank for 28 years, also working weekend nights at the nursing home. In retirement from the bank, she continued working weekends at the nursing home for a few years, housecleaning for local residents, and keeping busy with children and grandchildren. In 2016, she moved to Hutchinson, Kansas.

Carol had many talents, including cooking, sewing, crocheting, and knitting. She was a very good mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend to many.

Carol’s Christ-centered faith was very important to her. Her love of Jesus, her Lord and Savior, was exemplified by her devotion to family and friends and her service to others. Every Sunday, she and her daughters traveled 32 miles one-way to the Lutheran church in Buffalo, Oklahoma, because there was no Lutheran church in Ashland. She also made the same trip to see that her daughters completed confirmation classes.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, sons, Bris and Reid, brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Jean Stoelting, sister, Betsy Stoelting, brother-in-law, Lyle Skinner, and the father of her children, Robert Nicholson.

Survivors include daughters: Tara Nicholson of Hutchinson, Kansas, Lori (Terry) Brunholtz of Owasso, Oklahoma, Jeri (Jonathan) Melin of Derby, Kansas, Kira (Brent) Gugler of rural Chapman, Kansas; sister, Marlene (John) Hemmer of Mission, Texas, sister, Phyllis Skinner of Lake City, Iowa. Her grandchildren are Ariel Paul Melin, Maria (Daniel) Shields, Gareth Melin, and Jaron (Elizabeth) Melin, all of Derby, Kansas, Andrew Warner of Abilene, Kansas, Ashley (David) Beier of Wichita, Kansas, Kaylen Gugler of Woodbine, Kansas, and Kristine Gugler of Hays, Kansas. Her great-grandchildren are Lily and Liam Shields of Derby, Kansas, Evan Beier of Wichita, Kansas, and the expected child of Jaron and Elizabeth Melin.

Delores J. Giles, 85, of South Hutchinson, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 26, 2020, at Diversicare of Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born May 27, 1934, in Inman, to Henry and Olga (Schmidt) Pauls.

Delores had the sweetest smile and worked very hard in a variety of positions throughout her lifetime before retiring, but her real passion was in taking care of her family.&nbsp; She loved to cook, bake, sew, cross stitch, as much as she loved the color pink, and watching sports.

On January 28, 1952, she married Earl W. Crank.&nbsp; They shared 15 years of marriage and five children before his death on April 5, 1967.&nbsp; All of their children survive and include:&nbsp; daughters, Debbie (Bruce) Hoskinson, and Rhonda Crank; sons, Mike Crank, Stan (Pam) Crank, and Rich (Kathy) Crank.&nbsp; In addition to her children, Delores is survived by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous other extended family members.

Delores later married Howard Giles on August 9, 1973, and he had three children.&nbsp; They enjoyed 37 years of marriage, prior to his death on December 9, 2010.

Cremation has taken place.&nbsp; Private family graveside service will be held at a later date.&nbsp; Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Carolyn D. Cashman, 70, passed away Friday, January 24, 2020 at Hospice House, Hutchinson, KS.

Carolyn was born November 22, 1949 in Hutchinson, KS, the daughter of Paul N. and Helen D. (Bennett) Barnes. She was a graduate of Hutchinson High School and Fort Hays State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She taught kindergarten in Hutchinson for several years, then moved to Concordia where she opened up her own day care, she also worked as a case worker for Pawnee Mental Health Services, Flower Gallery and Palmquist Pharmacy before retiring and moving back to Hutchinson where she loved to volunteer for anything needed in Reno County including taking tickets for the Kansas State Fair.

Carolyn loved sports, especially the Hutchinson Blue Dragons and the Kansas City Chiefs. She was very creative and loved to make crafts for her children and teach her grandchildren to make them also. She was a very caring and family-oriented mother; however, she did raise her children with a stern loving hand. Carolyn’s favorite hobby was going to the Goodwill and Salvation Army, anytime her children came home to visit, that was the first thing to do on her list. Her hobby of going the Goodwill and Salvation Army continued with her grandchildren and making sure she took them to go find treasures with her.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Carolyn is survived by a daughter, Melissa (Kara) Poe of Hutchinson; triplet sons, Matthew Nevins of Concordia, James (Sally) Nevins of Salina, Mark (Melinda) Nevins of Hoxie; a sister Linda (Gary) Hohf of Michigan, a brother Leland (Nancy) Barnes of Hutchinson and 12 grandchildren.

A celebration of Carolyn’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson, KS, with Pastor Tim Carey officiating. There will not be a public visitation as cremation was chosen. Memorials may be given to Carolyn D. Cashman Memorial Fund and sent in care of the funeral chapel.

George A. ‘Tommy’ Hembree, 70, died unexpectedly at his home January 25, 2020.&nbsp; He was born June 24, 1949, in Pratt, to George Alvin and Velma Elizabeth (Shirk) Hembree, Sr.

Tommy graduated from Pratt High School in 1968 and Central Vocational School in 1969.&nbsp; He was a resident of Hutchinson since 1970. Tommy retired as a forklift driver for Cargill Salt.&nbsp; Currently, he worked for Buhler Unified School District 313 as a bus driver, spending the past five years driving for Prairie Hills Middle School.&nbsp; Tommy was a handyman, who loved to garden, work in his yard, camp, fish, and build ‘stuff’. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Tommy served in the United States Navy, during the Vietnam War, from 1969 to 1973, where he received many honors.&nbsp;
