Mary Lee Detweiler Wiens, 80, of Hesston, passed away Saturday, October 29, 2022 at Schowalter Villa, Hesston, Kansas. Mary Lee was born on the farm of her parents near Thomas, Oklahoma on January 27th, 1942. Daughter of John Robert and Ethel Lorene (Miller) Detweiler. Mary Lee was the youngest of three girls. After graduating from Hesston College with an Associates Degree in Business, Mary Lee started working at Hesston Corporation, then at Excel Industries where she was an Office Manager and Administrative Assistant to the President. She retired after 22 years of service. While working at Hesston Corporation, she met the love of her life, Richard H. Wiens. Richard and Mary Lee married May 14, 1966 at Hesston Mennonite Church, Hesston. Richard and Mary Lee were married just short of 40 years. The marriage was blessed with two children, Kimberly Wiens Barber and Philip Wiens and four grandchildren, Katelyn (Chandler) Sanburn, Mason Barber, Kennedy Wiens, and Cooper Wiens. Richard passed away March 28, 2006. Mary Lee was remarried May 23, 2009 to Jim Smith. This marriage expanded her family to include Amy Smith Murphy, Michael Smith, and six grandchildren. Mary Lee enjoyed many years of traveling. Some of her favorite places to visit were Colorado, Florida, and Indiana. An occasional trip to Branson and a bus trip to New York City and Washington D.C. were also special times for her. She loved to host family and friends for coffee or a meal. She had a knack for decorating and making all events special. She enjoyed playing cards with her close friends and attending Bible studies. Mary Lee loved visits from her grandchildren, catching up with their lives and playing a game of Wahoo or dominoes. Christmas was her favorite time of year, she loved the Christmas lights and making the house feel warm and cozy. She was a member of Hesston Mennonite Church for 50+ years, where she volunteered by teaching Sunday school, being involved in youth group and hosting Hesston College MOD groups. Her and Jim also enjoyed giving back to the community through the Meals on Wheels program with weekly deliveries. Mary Lee was raised in a Christian home, surrounded by strong believers. She continued her faith journey throughout life as she placed God at the center of her day to day. Mary Lee is survived by her husband, Jim Smith of Hesston; her children, Kim Barber and her husband Brett, of Hesston, Phil and his wife Krista, of Nappanee, Indiana, Amy and her husband Mike Murphy of Norman, Oklahoma, and Michael and his wife Dana Smith of Norman, Oklahoma. Gerald "Jerry" Ray Blocher, 91, of Hutchinson, passed away on October 28, 2022, at Buhler Sunshine Home. He was born July 19, 1931, in Humboldt, Nebraska, to James and Leah (Fairley) Blocher.

Jerry was raised in the Humboldt area where he graduated from high school in 1949. He attended Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska for one year, and then served in the Air Force for four years. After his military service, Jerry settled in the Kansas City area where he earned an associate degree in electronics. During his studies, he worked at a toy store in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, and this is where he met his wife to be, Marie. The couple was married on July 17, 1965, and Jerry became stepfather to Dian Kenning Pryor, Jerry Kenning, and Mark Kenning.

The couple moved to Joplin, Missouri where Jerry worked as a pharmaceutical sales rep. In 1970, Jerry became involved with the McDonald’s hamburger business, first as a manager, and then as a part owner-operator in Joplin and Miami, Oklahoma. Jerry and Marie purchased the Hutchinson McDonalds stores in 1978. The Blocher's sold their McDonald’s stores in 2005.

Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was a loving caregiver to Marie during her battle with Alzheimer disease. Jerry was an avid golfer, and enjoyed watching sports on television. He participated in football and basketball during his high school and college years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, traveling, having lunch at Carl's Bar, and always had a joke ready to tell.

Through McDonald's and in his personal life Jerry was a noted philanthropist. Many local organizations were the recipients of his generosity. One donation was to fund the very first pulse oximeter to be used in the newborn nursery of Hutchinson Hospital. The Ronald McDonald Houses in Wichita, Trinity Catholic High School in Hutchinson, Catholic churches in the Hutchinson area, and Hutchinson's TECH were just a few of the organizations Jerry supported.

Survivors include: sons, Jerry Kenning (Margaret) and Mark Kenning (Connie); son-in-law, Robert Pryor; nine grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren.

Jerry was preceded in death by: his mother, Leah; father, Orval; stepmother, Charlotte; wife, Marie; stepdaughter, Dian Kenning Pryor; and siblings, George, Harold, Melvin, and Naida Woods Knudson.

Parish rosary will be 10 am Thursday, November 3, 2022, at Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am, with Father Aaron Spexarth officiating. Burial will follow on at 11:30 am Friday, November 4, 2022, in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Raytown, Missouri. Friends may call from 9 am to 8 pm Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary with family present from 6 to 8 pm.

Larry D. Strawn, 87, of Hutchinson, passed away October 29, 2022, at Legend memory care facility in Hutchinson. Larry was born December 16, 1934, in Kinsley, to Lawrence O. and Eva T. (Cullen) Strawn.

He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1952, and upon graduation enlisted in the United States Navy. Larry served in the Navy for four years and was stationed in the Pacific aboard several destroyers, most notably the Theodore E. Chandler where he served as engine room chief.

While in the service Larry married Ruby L. Pedigo on May 27,1956, in Yuma, Arizona. After being honorably discharged, the couple returned to Hutchinson where they would make their home for the next 60 plus years. Larry was employed a number of jobs but most notably at Cessna/Eaton for 31 years.

Larry had always enjoyed participating in athletics. but upon retirement he found a new passion in the game of golf. For many years, Larry could be found teeing off at the same time each day at either Carey Park, Highlands, or Turkey Creek. Dedicated didn’t cover it as many years Larry would golf over 300 days a year and even made two holes in one! In addition to golf, Larry enjoyed showing horses in his younger days, square dancing, playing card games, playing ping pong and working jigsaw puzzles with his wife, Ruby.

Larry is survived by: his wife of 66 years, Ruby L. Strawn of Hutchinson; two daughters Cathy Emery (Ron) of Hutchinson and Karen Graber (John) of Branson, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Kyle Emery (Emily) of Wichita, Katie Yoder (Aaron) of Augusta, Molly Wilson (Mike) of Branson, Missouri, &nbsp;Joni Thomas (Shane) of Springfield, Missouri, Kristy Graber of Plato, Missouri, Valerie McKinley (Nathan) of Branson, Missouri, and Annie Graber and fiancé Tyler Crnolatas of Branson, Missouri; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers Don Strawn (Sharon) of Hutchinson and Jim Strawn (Linda) of Hutchinson; and sister-in-law, Diana Strawn of Hutchinson.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; a sister Joyce Herrell; and a brother Danny Strawn.

Rebekah Mae Mitchell, 23, of Park City, passed away on Friday, October 7th, 2022, in Tampa, Florida of medical complications.&nbsp;&nbsp; She was born April 2, 1999, in Independence, to Frank, Jr and Dana (Bryant) Mitchell.&nbsp; A beloved mother, daughter, sister, granddaughter, girlfriend, cousin and friend. Rebekah was a beautiful person inside and out, softspoken and gentle, she loved all in her life with a fire that could not be kindled. She enjoyed art, sewing, computers, music, fuzzy socks and most of all her daughter.

Rebekah was home schooled and active in the local home school group in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.&nbsp; One year, in grade school, she did UpWards Basketball with her sister Elizabeth.&nbsp; Every year she was in a bowling league with her other homeschool friends, a weekly Physical Education class where they did all kinds of sports/fitness activities together and was involved in other activities throughout each year.&nbsp; In high school she joined Bartlesville Southern Baptist church and was active with their youth group.

She took the Marketing class at Tri County Tech in Bartlesville, Oklahoma her junior year.&nbsp; She loved it.&nbsp; She loved dressing up professionally.&nbsp; She had perfect attendance there too and made the honor roll.&nbsp; That class was part of D.E.C.A and at their yearly competition her and her partner won 3rd&nbsp;place.&nbsp; She could have gone to Nationals but was starting to get very sick.&nbsp; That summer she was diagnosed with G.P.A. (aka – Wegener’s Granulomatosis) She was too sick to do the second year of the program. Rebekah graduated May 2017.

Her first job was as a housekeeper at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, KS.&nbsp; She only called in sick once or twice.&nbsp; She would come home so tired that all she could do was go to bed, yet she was determined to keep going.

She later worked as a housekeeper at Regent Park Assisted Living where her sister Kati worked.&nbsp; She loved getting to talk with the residents there.&nbsp; Then she got a job with Visiting Angles where she would go to a person’s house to help them with daily living, keep them company and take them grocery shopping.&nbsp; Rebekah really enjoyed helping people out and getting to know them.

Last year she started the Aviation Maintenance Technology Degree at WSU Tech. She completed one semester then decided to take a break and go stay in Apollo Beach, Florida.

Rebekah was preceded in death by her beloved brother Zachary Mitchell.

Rebekah is survived by her boyfriend Jesse Hunt, their daughter Ruby, and his daughter Quinn of Apollo Beach, FL; parents Frank, Jr. and Dana Mitchell of Park City; siblings Nathan Bryant of Valley Center, Kati Mitchell of Park City, Elizabeth Mitchell of Bel Aire, Nehemiah Mitchell of Valley Center, Samuel Mitchell of Park City, and Ezra Mitchell of Park City; grandparents Fred and Diana Bryant of Valley Center, and Frank and Debbie Mitchell of Coffeyville; Uncle Travis and Aunt Kris Bryant of Valley Center, Aunt Cherie and Uncle Jim Larkin of Garden Plain, Aunt Lisa and Uncle Mike Shivers of Cherryvale; cousins and friends.

The family would like to express our thanks for the wonderful help and prayers given during this time. We don’t know how we would have made it through this without you all.

Rebekah graduated May 2017.Her first job was as a housekeeper at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, KS.&nbsp; She only called in sick once or twice.&nbsp; She would come home so tired that all she could do was go to bed, yet she was determined to keep going.She later worked as a housekeeper at Regent Park Assisted Living where her sister Kati worked.&nbsp; She loved getting to talk with the residents there.&nbsp; Then she got a job with Visiting Angles where she would go to a person’s house to help them with daily living, keep them company and take them grocery shopping.&nbsp; Rebekah really enjoyed helping people out and getting to know them.Last year she started the Aviation Maintenance Technology Degree at WSU Tech. She completed one semester then decided to take a break and go stay in Apollo Beach, Florida.Rebekah was preceded in death by her beloved brother Zachary Mitchell.Rebekah is survived by her boyfriend Jesse Hunt, their daughter Ruby, and his daughter Quinn of Apollo Beach, FL; parents Frank, Jr. and Dana Mitchell of Park City; siblings Nathan Bryant of Valley Center, Kati Mitchell of Park City, Elizabeth Mitchell of Bel Aire, Nehemiah Mitchell of Valley Center, Samuel Mitchell of Park City, and Ezra Mitchell of Park City; grandparents Fred and Diana Bryant of Valley Center, and Frank and Debbie Mitchell of Coffeyville; Uncle Travis and Aunt Kris Bryant of Valley Center, Aunt Cherie and Uncle Jim Larkin of Garden Plain, Aunt Lisa and Uncle Mike Shivers of Cherryvale; cousins and friends.The family would like to express our thanks for the wonderful help and prayers given during this time. Alta married Eugene Haile Ross on November 6, 1949 in Wellsford. He preceded her in death on January 7, 2017. Alta graduated from Friends Haviland Academy. She attended Friends Bible College in Haviland for 2 years. She was a member of Haviland Friends Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting. She made plastic bag sleep mats that she donated to the Salvation Army, Manna House in Dodge City and Ascension Lutheran Church in Pratt. Each one of the sleep mats had a Gideon pamphlet attached. Thank you to all of the friends and neighbors for donating plastic bags for Alta's project. Anfred Allen Smith, also known as "Shorty", 97, peacefully passed away Thursday, October 27, 2022, a resident of Parkword.

Anfred was born August 21, 1925, the youngest son of Jesse and Leah (Shepard) Smith, in Springvale Township in the southwest corner of Pratt Co. He was the last surviving cousin of the Smith and Shepard families.

A life-long resident of Pratt Co., as a young boy he attended school at Wellsford and Cullison. He graduated from Cullison High School in 1943 with a fellow classmate, Vivian Adams, who he would marry. Anfred enlisted in the US Navy on Nov 1944, and attended the US Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois. Wearing his Navy uniform he married Vivian Adams in Pratt, KS, on Feb 25, 1945. He was assigned to the USS McCaffrey DD860, a newly commissioned destroyer. He and Vivian attended the commissioning ceremony July 1945, at Terminal Island, Los Angeles, CA. Anfred served as an ammunition supply shipman aboard the McCaffery as it preformed military maneuvers in preparation for its deployment to China. After his discharge from the Navy in 1946, Anfred returned to the southwest area of Pratt Co. where he engaged in farming and raising livestock where the fourth generation of Smiths continue to farm. He and his wife, Vivian, had three children.

In 1979 Anfred participated in the American Agriculture Tractorcade driving his Case tractor to Washington, DC, in February of that year to protest farm prices. Accompanied by his wife and brother, Lawrence, he was one of hundreds of tractors participating in the tractorcade. Anfred attended the Wellsford Methodist Church and later joined the Pratt Free Methodist Church in Pratt. After his retirement in 1991 he and Vivian moved to Pratt where he was involved with church activities and the Gideons, an organization that places bibles in local hotels and distributed bibles to school children. He was involved with missionary work and made trips to Honduras and an Arizona Indian school to help with building and maintenance projects. He enjoyed his grandchildren and gave several of them their first driving lesson in his pickup truck, taking them driving through the pasture.

Survivors include: a daughter, Janice (Don) Urban, Wichita, and children, Jess (Megan) of Marysville,and Leslie (Adam) Rathert of Nortonville; a son, Morris (Kay) Smith, Haviland, and children, Teresa (Don) Richhart of Moline, IL, Tammie (Luke) Hoeme of Pratt, Kristi (Justin) Gatz of Preston, and Allen (Katie) Smith of Haviland; granddaughters, Lori (Roger) Rankin of Wichita and Becky Moore of Moore, OK, daughters of a deceased daughter, Gloria Jean (Richard) Petersen; 8 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lloyd, Marvin and Lawrence; a daughter, Gloria Jean Petersen; and son in-law, Richard Petersen..

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lois, 6 daughters, Kari Silvernale, Kristi Silvernale, Kandace Silvernale (Warren Willis), Kim Silvernale-Wagner (Tim Wagner), Karla Silvernale, and Kelli (Justin Schrag), 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. He also is survived by sisters Mary Ann Heieren, Kay Dahlke (Mike), Sally Green (Les) and sister-in-law Kathleen Silvernale. He was preceded in death by a son, Kurtis Allen Silvernale, parents, Walter and Mary Silvernale, Brother Kayo Silvernale and 2 baby brothers, as well as brother-in-law’s Craig Heieren, Don Johnson, Bud Mulder and sister-in-law Sally Johnson. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Walt “Smokey” was born on November 25, 1936 in Currie Township, Minnesota. He attended and graduated from Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School in Currie, Mn. Throughout his youth he worked at various jobs, delivering papers, shoveling snow, working at the family stockyards. After high school he drove truck for Silvernale Trucking until he entered the seminary. When he found out women were not a part of that life, he joined the United States Army as a medic! He married Lois on April 19, 1958, and they lived in San Francisco, California. In 1959, they moved back to Currie, Minnesota, and lived on the family farm. Babies and blizzards led to the family move to Nebraska. With changing jobs in sales, he then moved his family to Illinois, Kansas, Tennessee and back to Kansas where the family settled. Recently, Walt resided with his wife, Lois, at Schowalter Villa in Hesston, Kansas.

Throughout his life Walt loved the outdoors, fishing, daily trips to East Lake, and watching eagles in the winter months. He loved taking trips with Lois and his family, locally, in country and to Europe and Venezuela! It didn’t matter where he traveled, he always looked for the places with ‘character’ and felt like the journey was more important and interesting than the destination! Walt was an avid animal lover! Rocky was his favorite big collie dog! His Catholic faith was very important to Walt, and he was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Harvey County Parks Board, and was a member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society. Going out to eat and coffee with family and friends was a daily outing. It meant a lot visiting friends in the community. He helped many people in various ways and always felt it was most important to ‘take care and be there for the kids’!

Genevieve Elizabeth “Jenny” Landgren, age 101, of Lindsborg passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at Bethany Home of Lindsborg.  Jenny was born May 9, 1921 in Beverly. 



She married Marvin Landgren on January 13, 1944. They were members of Bethany Lutheran Church.  Jenny worked for a time as a housekeeper, and as a baker at Bethany College from 1963 to 1984.

Jenny enjoyed working beside her husband, Marvin, on the farm, playing sports, and watching her favorite sports teams (Dallas Cowboys and KC Royals).  Other joys of her life included dancing at parties and spending time with her family at holiday meals and birthday parties, as well as eating ice cream and serving food at the senior center to “the old people”.



Survivors include her sons: Larry Landgren (Karen) of Emporia, Richard Landgren (Pam) of Wichita, and Dean Landgren (Shannon) of McPherson; grandchildren: Brendon Landgren (Jamie Massey Cobb); Lisa Golubski (Rick); Lyndel Landgren (Aimee);  Brent Landgren;  Laren Landgren;  Lathan Landgren (Kayla);  Tiffany Clovis; and Tasha Postier;  as well as 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

On June 19, 1947, she married Walter Hall, Jr; he died in 2001.&nbsp; Survivors include sons Herschel Alan, Donald Bruce, and Douglas Erwin; 3 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.&nbsp; She was also preceded in death by son Dennis Walter; brothers Richard, Herschel and Edmond; and sister Doris Hughes.

William Jay Braden, 77 of McPherson, passed away at 12:30am Wednesday October 26th at his residence with his loving wife and family by his side. William was born in Sacramento California on December 6th 1944. A son of the late Lois Lorraine (Jordan) and Robert Amos Braden.

He worked for Pyle Construction before going into business for himself, owning B&amp;B Masonry. He spent many years loving his experiences working alongside his family before retiring in 2014. William Jay Braden was united in Marriage to Phyllis June Wilson in Salida Colorado.

He is survived by his loving wife June Braden (Margaret) of McPherson. Sons Terry Braden of Colorado, Steve Braden of Kansas City Missouri, and Jason Wilson of McPherson, Daughter Stephaine Oakes (Steve Oakes) of McPherson. He has 14 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, as well as all of his bonus children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. William was preceded in death by his parents, his sons Ty and Doug Braden, his 4 brothers and 3 sisters, his grandson Jon Paul Oakes, and daughter in law Judy Braden. His hobbies were fishing, hunting, traveling, and especially spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

William was preceded in death by his parents, his sons Ty and Doug Braden, his 4 brothers and 3 sisters, his grandson Jon Paul Oakes, and daughter in law Judy Braden. Richard Earl Clark, 94, passed away October 27, 2022, at home in Hutchinson. He was born November 27, 1928, to James Walker Clark and Roberla Jessie Hightower, in Cushing, Oklahoma, where he grew up, then moving to White Cloud, Michigan and eventually Hutchinson. 

He served in WWII in Japan, he loved to paint, write poetry, wood carving, wildlife, reading and he was a preacher for many years in Florence, Colorado and White Cloud, Michigan. Richard graduated from high school and also had some years of college education. 

He is survived by his loving wife, with a recent celebration of 72 years on October 2, 2022, Margaret (Phillips) Clark; children, Patricia (Dave) of Ohio, Mitchell (Rebecca) of Hutchinson, Roger of Nebraska and Teri (Scott) of Kinsley, Kansas; 25 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, James, Joanna, Richard II and Roy. 

A memorial service will be at the Salt City Cowboy Church November 12th, 2022, at 1 pm.

Eileen Ruth Yamauchi, 69, passed unexpectedly October 26, 2022, at her home.&nbsp; She was born February 25, 1953, in St. John, to Burton Wilbur and Virginia Ann (Taylor) Snyder.

Eileen graduated from St. John High School in 1971.&nbsp; She received her bachelor’s degree from McPherson College in biology, with a minor in chemistry.&nbsp; Eileen worked for over 15 years in research and development for Doskocil’s.&nbsp; She later retired after eight years of service at the Hutchinson Community Foundation, where she was responsible for donor services.&nbsp; Eileen enjoyed reading, playing the piano, singing, gardening, crafts, and decorating for all the seasons and holidays.&nbsp; She was a servant leader, serving on numerous community boards and organizations throughout the years and was a member of Soroptimist International.&nbsp; Eileen also appreciated the ministries of her church, Grace Bible Church in Hutchinson, and particularly enjoyed being involved with the toddler ministry.&nbsp; Above all, Eileen loved being a doting grandma and great-grandma; she would do anything for her family.&nbsp; Eileen left an imprint on everyone she met and will be greatly missed.

On August 5, 1978, she married Mark Yamauchi, in St. John. They shared 44 years of marriage.

Eileen is survived by:&nbsp; her husband, Mark Yamauchi; daughters, Sara Yamauchi and Crystal Gonzales (Paul), all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Quentin Clapp (Casey), Kaiya Yamauchi-Valles, Gregory Gonzales (Samantha) and family, all of Hutchinson and Samuel Gonzales and family of Kansas City, MO; great-grandson, Hardin Clapp; brother, Lance Snyder (Olivia) of Ouray, CO; nephew, Adam Snyder of Durango, CO; niece, Eloris Snyder of Houston, TX; and countless friends.

Teresa’s life began on August 8, 1928, near Fredonia, on the family farm. She is the daughter of Charles and Beulah (McNett) Love. The family moved around quite a bit during the depression and returned to Kansas when Teresa was 17. 

She worked briefly for Southwestern Bell before marrying Valerian H. Tajchman on June 8, 1963, in Wichita. Teresa was a faithful and strong Catholic. She was involved in Altar Society and Right to Life groups. 

She is survived by her children Vickie (Steve) Jirak of Ramona, Jacqueline (Greg) Jirak of Oakley, Clay (Candace) Tajchman of Ramona and Scott (Danielle) Tajchman of Hutchinson; grandchildren Raschelle ( Christopher) Bruck, Seth (Gina) Jirak, Jacob Jirak, Elias Jirak, Ethan (Maggie) Jirak, Heidi Jirak, Emma ( Isaac) Follett, Leo Jirak, Pius Jirak, Ivan Jirak, Chelsea (Thieen) Antoszyk, Samantha (Chris ) Wilson, Noah Tajchman, Adi Tajchman, Mila Tajchman, Dominic Tajchman, Zelie Tajchman, Bernadette Tajchman, and Pia Tajchman; great grandchildren Grace, Lydia, Lucy, Vincent, Liam, Xavier, Cecelia, Nancie, Sebastian, Casper, Miriam, Isabelle, Kash, Hayden and Arabella; sister Joan Barton, sister in law Evelyn Tajchman, brother in law Herman Strafuss and several nieces and nephews.

Her family will gather with friends on Wednesday, November 2nd from 5-7 p.m. with a Rosary service at 7 p.m. at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Pilsen. Her Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, November 3rd at 10 a.m. at the church. She will be laid to rest in Pilsen Cemetery. Yazel Megli Funeral Home is serving the family.&nbsp;

Roscoe Eugene “Gene” Ricketts, 90, of Little River, passed away October 26, 2022, at his home. He was born November 30, 1931, in Westphalia,&nbsp; the son of Roscoe Esmond and Lydia Ellen Smith Ricketts. 

Gene has resided in Little River for the past 66 years, formerly of Geneseo. He graduated from Geneseo High School with the class of 1949. Gene served in the United States Navy from April 2, 1951 until his honorable discharge on March 24, 1955. He worked for twenty years as a machinist at Cessna in Hutchinson, Kansas, and for twenty years as a United Parcel Service (UPS) driver. Gene was also a road grader operator for Rockville Township, a farm hand and foster parent. He was a member of the Congregational Church, Little River; member of Moose Lodge #982 of Hutchinson; and a member of the Dwight Lamson Post #258 American Legion of Little River, where he held various offices. Gene was a ‘jack of all trades’, enjoyed woodworking; and most of all watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports. On October 7, 1956, Gene was united in marriage with Karen Burke in Little River. They have shared 66 years of marriage. 

He is survived by his loving wife, Karen of the home; two sons, James Ricketts and wife Judy of PA, and Mitchell Ricketts of McPherson; two daughters, Jane Richards of Park City, and Shelby Stabile and husband Jonathan of NH; two sisters, Wynona Soler of TX, and Gaye Dyck of TX; five grandchildren, Abbi Downing and husband Darrin of Wichita, Courtney Ewertt and husband Shane of Little River, Lauren Young and husband Gage of Cheney, Elizabeth Stabile of NH, and Gabriella Stabile of NH; and seven great-grandchildren, Jhet, Eisley, Daxton, Eastyn, Everett, Whitten, and Will. Frieda Lindburg, 74, died October 24, 2022, in Hutchinson. She was born in Emporia, on September 12, 1948, to Cliff and Maxine (Parker) Lindburg. The Lindburgs moved to Hutchinson in 1952. Frieda graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1966, where she was active in choir and tennis. She studied music education at Southwestern College, was inducted into Mu Phi Epsilon, and was one of ten semi-finalists for the Wichita Symphony Orchestra’s Naftzger Young Artist Auditions and Awards.&nbsp; Frieda taught junior high music before moving to Munich Germany to attend the Munich Music Academy.

She was a prolific performer, known for her veracity and tenacity, singing some of the most difficult leading soprano roles, her favorites being Abigaille in Verdi’s “Nabucco” and Rosalinde in Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus”. During her opera career, Lindburg performed with the State Opera of Kiel, the Opera Houses of Trier, Augsburg and Saarbrucken, the Offenbach Theatre, the Winterthur (a premiere opera tour of France), and the Heidenheimer Festival, which was featured on German National Television’s “Aspects of Culture”.

Frieda returned to the United States in 2005, and enjoyed a post-retirement career as a dog trainer, active in the Hutchinson Kennel Club. She also joined the First Mennonite Church, where she participated in the choir and was featured as a soloist many times.

Frieda is survived by: sister, Ann Lindburg, Hudson, Colorado; aunt, Billie Lindburg, Tulsa, Oklahoma; cousins, Datha Lindburg, Lindsborg, Carol Jean Martin, Sharon; cousin, Kim Harper, Ellsworth; and others.

She was preceded in death by: her father, Cliff Lindburg; mother, Maxine (Parker) Lindburg; brother, Kirk Lindburg; and uncle, Merl Lindburg.

On August 12, 1926 Margaret entered this world, the ninth of eleven children born to Abraham “A.T.” and Anna (Ediger) Neufeld. Her growing up years were spent working and playing on their farm west of Inman. Many fond stories were told of these years, as she and her siblings learned to live on little and laugh a lot. From a young age, Margaret dreamed of someday being a nurse. She attended Little Valley Grade School in Little Valley Township and graduated from Inman High School. After high school Margaret began nurses training at the Bethel Deaconess hospital. Those years were special to her and she formed a number of lifelong friendships with her nursing classmates, the March Winds, as they called themselves. During her nursing tenure, she was invited to W.F. &amp; Esther Wiebe’s for an evening of table games. It was there that she met Richard Wiebe from Whitewater. That acquaintance progressed from friendship to courtship and from courtship to love. They were married August 12, 1951 at the Bethel Mennonite Church near Inman, KS.

Mom enthusiastically joined Dad in his life and work. They farmed for a living, but they didn’t live to farm. Rather they lived to glorify the Lord and serve the people in their lives. Seven children were born to them and became their primary work. They poured themselves into training us to live life according to scriptural principles. We often heard Mom say, “Dad and I are one!” Mom taught us much with her words and even more with her example.

She faithfully sought to be the wife and mother described in Proverbs 31:

● She “looks to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.”

● She “opens her mouth with wisdom and teaches with kindness.”

● She “clothes herself with strength and dignity.”

We often heard her singing when we were growing up. Sometimes it was hymns for her own encouragement, and other times her singing was for our instruction. “Grumble on Monday, grumble on Tuesday, grumble the whole week through…”, or “Angry words, oh let them never...” were a couple of instructive songs we heard from her when our attitudes were not right. She was a “mentor” long before the term became popular as she mentored her children and other individuals God brought into her life. She enjoyed many things, like flowers, baking, a cup of coffee, and visiting with friends. There were also things she didn’t enjoy like snakes, butchering chickens (butchering in general), driving (she always had one foot on the accelerator and the other foot on the brake), beets, hominy, washing the milk buckets, and a few other things, but we rarely noticed because she wasn’t a complainer.

Mom generally loved life and had a ready smile and a cheerful disposition. It was a rare occasion for her to turn down the opportunity to attend church, watch her kids or grandkids compete in a ballgame, or go to one of her family’s homes for a visit. She loved her Neufeld family and the Christmas gathering that took place each year in Inman. Another highlight for her were the birthday celebrations with her five sisters. These day-long visits were filled with love and laughter, sharing and caring, and more laughter.

Mom wasn’t a perfectionist nor a perfect person. Her cooking was good, but not gourmet. Her house and yard were well kept, but they were never put on a magazine front. She had struggles; yet distasteful memories of her are few. She was a person very much in the background, rarely on stage or in the limelight, yet so strong in her own quiet way, faithfully encouraging, supporting, praying for, and being loyal to those the Lord had entrusted to her.

Mom became a Christian as a young girl, kneeling with her Dad in the farmhouse dining room, praying in German as she confessed her sin to the Lord and accepted Jesus’ forgiveness. At times, she struggled with knowing for sure that she was saved, but over time that changed. Romans 10:13, “Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved“ was shared with her by one of her granddaughters. She clung to that verse as well as John 6:37, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” Mom’s walk with the Lord was consistent, spending time reading and praying for each of her family and others every morning and night…and often throughout the day. She had a stack of verses she memorized and reviewed daily. At the end of her life, she asked us to pray that she would be faithful to the end and patient until the Lord came to get her. Her faith has “found a resting place”.

Mom never really retired, but her activities changed. Gardening went from a large vegetable garden to flower beds. Cooking for nine eventually changed to meals for two and then to getting supper just for herself (a bologna sandwich was her favorite). Responsibilities changed again when Dad had to move to Wheat State Manor. Mom faithfully attended him each day until the Lord called him Home on September 10, 2017. Several years later, declining health required her to move to Presbyterian Manor. She was saddened to leave the home she loved but accepted her plight graciously. She kept up her work by interacting with her visitors, spending time praying, reading scripture, being content, and being thankful. The staff could hear her praying from her bed when they passed by her room in the evening. We found in her journal a statement she had written for herself years ago, “My goal is to first of all be a happy, contented wife who is pleasing to my husband and a mother whom my children will always like to come home to. And, most of all, I want to be what Jesus wants me to be.” Mom never retired from any of that.

Mom’s strength of character was not an inborn trait. Rather, it came from the relationship she had with her Savior, Jesus Christ, and the work He did in and through her. She passed from this life into Heaven on October 22, 2022.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Wiebe; three brothers, Hank, Dan, and Abe; six sisters, Lena Thiessen, Marie Gilley, Ann Jantz, Sally Wiens, Kate Ensz and Linda Neufeld; two grandsons, Caleb Neal and Kameron Wiebe, and one grandson-in law, Chris Harder.

She is survived by her children, Marjorie and Don Price of Missouri, Cecil and Jacque Wiebe of Burns, Lyle and Lenora Wiebe of Whitewater, Lewis and Jenny Wiebe of Whitewater, Winnie and Ed Neal of Texas, Wanita and Russ Busenitz of Peabody, and Marlys and Steve Unruh of Newton; 30 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, sister-in-laws Gladys and Arlene Wiebe, and brother Cornie Neufeld.

Visitation for Margaret will be held Sunday, October 30, 2022, at Emmaus Mennonite Church from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m., Funeral service will be held Monday, October 31, 2022, also at Emmaus Mennonite Church beginning at 4:00 p.m. Services will be led by Pastor Tim Mace. Alma Louise Markley, 94, passed away October 27, 2022, in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; She was born August 16, 1928, in Dover, the daughter of Mancell and Pearl (Lister) Akers.&nbsp; Alma resided in Topeka, most of her life.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James ‘Jay’ Don Markley of 72 years, and a daughter, Loretta.

Alma was a homemaker most of her life which included taking care of other children.&nbsp; She was known as an excellent baker and famous chocolate cake maker.&nbsp; Alma was always up to playing cards and games at any time.&nbsp;

She is survived by: her son, Jay Markley and wife Judy of Denton, TX; daughter, Connie Lyle of Hutchinson; grandchildren: Kelli Miller, Matthew Markley, David Markley, and Kristen Troop; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandsons.&nbsp;

No public memorial service is planned.&nbsp; Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Topeka, at a later date.

Sharon was born on December 26, 1946, in

Janice L Demel 71, died October 25, 2022 at Kansas Christian Home in Newton. She was born December 26, 1950 in Sangor, California to Ervin R. and Mildred (Cornelius) Brown. On April 16, 1983 she married Vernon Demel at Newton.

Janice attended St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Parishes in Newton and McPherson. She was currently employed as a LPN at Schowalter Villa in Hesston. Janice has practiced nursing for over 20 years and was a member of the nurses association.

She greatly enjoyed shopping and garage sales, she also had a love for animals. Her greatest joy in life was being a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She especially enjoyed keeping up with her grandkids activities. She is survived by her husband Vernon; son Jeff Scott; daughter Katherine Hauck; grandchildren Brianna, Trisha, Kaylee, Lane, Andrew, McKayla; great grandchildren Alexander, Ayanna, Isabela, Christian, Addilline, Veyron, Mason, Emmitt, and Axel; brothers Ray and George Brown and sister Kathleen Schmidt. Janice is preceded in death by her parents.

Norbert Greiving, passed away Oct. 25, 2022 at the Hilltop Manor, Cunningham.

He was born May 12, 1922, at Nashville. The son of John and Frances Linnebur Greiving, Norbert enjoyed his life as a farmer and stockman in St. Leo. He was a member of the St. Leo Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

His favorite pastime was fishing with his friends and family. Norbert was able to experience one final fishing trip at his pond shortly after his 100th birthday.

Survivors include sisters Aquina Stonestreet, Adela Mae Becker and Louella Fairchild; his brother Adelphus Greiving; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Valerian, Orville Lee and Raineldas; sisters Alvina Mulnix, Geraldine Voth and Beatrice Greiving; half-brothers Wilfred and Victor; and half-sister Eunice Decker.

Parish rosary will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022, at the St. Leo Catholic Church with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 a.m. Burial of the cremains will be in the St. Leo Church Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Valerian, Orville Lee and Raineldas; sisters Alvina Mulnix, Geraldine Voth and Beatrice Greiving; half-brothers Wilfred and Victor; and half-sister Eunice Decker.Parish rosary will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022, at the St. Leo Catholic Church with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 a.m. Burial of the cremains will be in the St. Leo Church Cemetery.
