Melissa Ann &nbsp;(Stoss) Cowles, 49, died November 4, 2022, at Hospice House Hutchinson, after a valiant fight with cancer. She was born March 14, 1973, in Great Bend, to Edward and Darlene (Doonan) Stoss.

Melissa graduated from Hoisington High School in 1991. She then attended dental school through the American Red Cross at Carswell Air Force Base.&nbsp; Melissa worked as an account manager for the family business, AnswerLink of Kansas for over 20 years. In her spare time, Melissa enjoyed camping, riding four-wheelers, spending time at the river, and enjoyed reading.&nbsp; Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, friends, and dog, Lucy.&nbsp; Melissa was a devoted wife, daughter, mother, sister, aunt, and friend.&nbsp; She was a member of Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson.

On April 29, 1995, she married Patrick John Cowles, in Hutchinson.

Melissa is survived by: her husband of 27 years, Patrick; daughters, Morgan Cowles and Mallory Cowles; son, Caden Cowles, all of Hutchinson; mother; Darlene Stoss; brother Jerry (Dana) Stoss, all of Hoisington; sister, Michelle (Keith) Kultgen of Sulphur Springs, TX; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by: &nbsp;her father, Edward Stoss; sister, Melinda Stoss; and brother, John Stoss.

Following the military, Larry earned his degree from the University of Nebraska. He worked in banking for 49 years in Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Larry worked for First National Bank in Hutchinson for 31 years before his retirement on February 19, 2005. He was a recognized collector of toy farm equipment and was featured in publications. Larry was a member of Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson.

On January 3, 1974, he married Jeane Woodall in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They shared 48 years together.

Larry is survived by: wife, Jeane Jordan, Hutchinson; daughters, Julie, Union Star, Missouri, Sheri, Olympia, Washington; granddaughter, Abby, Olympia Washington; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; and brothers, Richard and Robert Jordan.

Memorial service will be 11 am Thursday, November 10, 2022, at Church of the Holy Cross, with Father Will Stuever officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in Nebraska. Friends may sign the book from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary.

 on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott 
City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on July 28, 1933, in Tribune, Kansas, the 
daughter of Charles Hugo and Mary Elizabeth Swilley Thon.&nbsp; A resident of
 Scott City, Kansas, since 1996 moving from Stillwell, Oklahoma, she was a
 retired Med Tech &amp; Nurse Aide at Park Lane Nursing Home and a Home 
Health Nurse.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; 
Letha enjoyed music, playing the piano, singing in the church choir, 
teaching Sunday school and cooking and cleaning at the church.

In 1948, she married Bobby Lloyd Wishon in Lamar, Colorado.&nbsp; He passed away August 1, 2015, in Dodge City, Kansas.

Diane Branning 60 died October 30, 2022, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. She was Born August 11, 1962, in Wellington, to Darrell and Shirley (Bradt) Branning. On September 19th&nbsp;she celebrated 41 years with her life partner Patty Kreier.

She graduated from Wellington High School, Fort Hay State University with a degree in Psychology and minor in Business, and The University of Kansas with a master’s degree in Social Work.

Following College she worked at Prairie View, Youthville and Eldorado Correctional Facility. She loved working varying jobs and the people she worked with.

Diane was co-owner of The Station House Restaurant in Walton, Kansas, and Kansas Photobooths. She enjoyed photography, spending time with her family and friends and making people laugh and reading a good novel.

Diane is survived by her partner Patty; five sons Donald Brown (Elizabeth Furness); Walter (Amanda) Stagner; Chad Kreier-Branning; Tyler Kreier-Branning; TJ (Meagan) Branning and daughters Hollie Kreier-Branning and Ashley Kreier-Branning. Miriam Hawthorne passed away in her San Antonion home, on Tuesday, 25 Oct 2022 just three days from her 97th birthday. &nbsp;Miriam Lee Smith Hawthorne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irving B. Smith was born 28 October 1925 in Hutchinson. 

She was a graduate of Vogue School of Design in Chicago and had been department manager for American Millinery Company in Chicago. Here she mastered her craft as millenarist. Miriam met her husband on a blind date and married Francis Earl Hawthorne of Akron, OH on 1 February 1948 at Pratt First Christian Church. &nbsp;They settled in Junction City where Earl was stationed at Fort Riley. The couple traveled twenty years for Air Force and retired in San Antonio, TX. Twenty years later, they retired for the final time from Air Force civil service. Miriam was a devoted wife, mother, and Christian. She was an active member, holding numerous officers’ positions, of various women’s clubs in San Antonio. Miriam was the happiest in preparing holiday dinners for her family, decorating her home, and completing sewing projects.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Earl Hawthorne, son Kirkwood Smith Hawthorne and son-in-law Ronald James Oliva.

Miriam is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Oliva of San Antonio, Texas; step-grandchildren, Roland Oliva and wife Lindy of Katy, Texas; Annie Oliva Rodriguez of Roseville, CA. The Hawthorne family thanks Ms. Gloria Saldana for her eighteen years of care to the family.

Gordon S. Fitz John, 98, of Wichita, Kansas passed away on Friday, October 28, 2022.&nbsp; He was born in Neosho, Missouri to James Franklin Fitz John and Gladys (Higganbotham) Fitz John. Having been raised in the Neosho area where she attended school and was a graduate of Neosho High School.&nbsp; Gordon served in the U.S. Army and was a WWII Veteran.&nbsp; He married the love of his life Imogene on September 15, 1946.&nbsp; He retired from Cessna Aircraft. After retirement with his mechancial gift he helped others by having a lawnmower business working and fixing lawnmowers.

Gordon S. Fitz John, 98, of Wichita, Kansas passed away on Friday, October 28, 2022.&nbsp; He was born in Neosho, Missouri to James Franklin Fitz John and Gladys (Higganbotham) Fitz John. Having been raised in the Neosho area where she attended school and was a graduate of Neosho High School.&nbsp; Gordon served in the U.S. Army and was a WWII Veteran.&nbsp; He married the love of his life Imogene on September 15, 1946.&nbsp; He retired from Cessna Aircraft. Judy (Judith) Rae Stancer, 76, of Valley Center, KS, went to be with the Lord with family by her side on November 2nd, 2022. Judy was preceded in death by her Brother Douglas Griffin, Father Don Griffin, and Mother Jeanne Griffin. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 58 years James H. Stancer, and sons Don Stancer, Michael Stancer (Anita), and Lee Stancer (Gracee). She was blessed with four grandchildren (Riley, Ashlynn, Bradyn, Eli). She was well loved by her sisters Gwen Stith, Ann McKay (Michael), sister in laws JoAnn Seyb (John Seyb), Judy Kasper, and Sue Griffin (Doug). She cherished 10 nieces and nephews Deborah Walters, Deanna Bartonek, Darren Seyb, Noah McKay, Kate McKay, Bobby Griffin, Christina Kratky, Ronda Patrick, Randy Lauppe, and Donna Morgan, great nieces/nephews, cousins, and friends. She loving gave her advice and was always there to lean on. Most importantly, Judy was a loving wife and mother to her family. Jack Hatchel, 84, of Haven, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at his home. He was born August 30, 1938 in Champaign County, Illinois, the son of Eddie Sylvin and Pearle (Bridges) Hatchel. He graduated from high school in Atwood, Illinois with the class of 1956. Jack worked for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline for 41 years as a controls technician. He retired in 1997. He was a lifelong member of the NRA (National Rifle Association). He was an avid KU fan, along with Chicago Bears and Cubs. He was united in marriage to Carol Jo Christian on February 6, 1959 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pesotum, Illinois. She survives after 63 years of marriage. Marlena Sue Powell was born March 15, 1948 in Hutchinson, KS to Paul and Vera Koontz. She graduated from Mt. Hope High School in 1966, just before Mt. Hope consolidated with Burrton. She was a member of Haven Baptist Church where she was active in choir, Sunday school teacher and Vacation Bible School. Her spiritual birthday was the summer of 1956 at age 8 when she accepted Christ as her Savior while attending Bible School in Edna, KS. Marlena worked a short time for USD 312 Haven School District serving as secretary at Yoder Grade School. Later in life she worked full time for Eby Construction Company as project manager assistant for 13 years. She did cash deposits for Dillards, which opened a door to transfer to Phoenix, AZ for four years. When she returned home to Kansas she became a property manager for 14 years with Weigand Omega Company. Throughout her life she enjoyed making crafts, gardening, tinkering around in the garage, and reading her Bible. Marlene’s happiest moments were spent sharing her testimony in song singing at various churches, senior facilities, and other community gatherings in and out of state. She had the privilege to attend the Stamps-Baxter School of Music in Nashville and appeared on television stations for the Nashville Revue Record Industry Showcase. She valued spending her time with her son, Cody teaching him to enjoy God’s creation and things she had learned from her years spent on the farm. Every year plans were made for a vacation filled with learning experiences and fun. Her most blessed adventure was an opportunity to see the Holy Land where she found it to be true that once a person experiences this trip they truly do not return the same spiritually, but rather you find your walk with God has deepened your desire to know Jesus Christ more. She delighted in giving more than receiving. She never recalled a time in her life where God ever let her down or failed to meet her needs in her darkest moments. Marlena is preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Vera Koontz. She is survived by her brother, Wesley and wife Vicki, Hutchinson, KS; son, Cody and wife Stacy, Santa Fe, TX; grandsons, Dalton and Ryan; many nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews. Margaret Louise (Ruby) Hein was born on June 16, 1926. She passed away on November 1st, 2022 at the age of 96. She was born the 5th child, to Walter and Wilhelmina (Remmers) Ruby, in Marion, Kansas. There were 8 children, all predeceased; Catherine Hein, Joe Ruby, Fred Ruby, Art Ruby, Annabelle Gaffney, Lucille Weyer, and Ralph Ruby. She went to a one room School (Pleasant Valley) for the first 8 years. The summer prior to high school, Margaret began working outside the home. She worked for several families, doing child care, cooking, cleaning, laundry and ironing. In those days, this was quite a chore because you had to fill the iron with kerosene and pump air into it, and it was very heavy.

Margaret attended Marion High School, graduating in 1944. During her high school years, she worked several jobs, including J. C. Penney Co., and then Seymore Packing Company, both in Marion. She worked here as a bookkeeper and was there 4 years. After this, she worked at the Tip Top Creamery in Hillsboro.

Margaret used to go to the Marion skating rink where she met Edward Ray Hein. Margaret grew up Catholic and Edward was Mennonite. This was an obstacle to deal with for both families, and after several years of dating and being very sure of their love for each other, they eventually married in the EUB Church in Marion, now Eastmoor United Methodist , on August 10, 1948. They became members and were very active in the church for nearly 73 years. She was a SS teacher and also taught Bible School for many years, and later served on the kitchen committee.

Margaret was active as a farm wife, working side by side with Ed. They did outside jobs to supplement the farm income in their early years. During this time, they started a family, and 3 children were born in just over 3 years; Karen, Janet, and Dean. She kept very busy on the farm, but was also active in EHU. As the girls entered college, Margaret took a job as a cook at Tabor, where she worked for about 10 years. She enjoyed this work and made many friends there. Everyone enjoyed Margaret’s cooking, from family and friends, to hired hands. She hosted many large family dinners, and even hosted these into her 90’s! They had lots of friends they got together with frequently, playing cards or games, or having picnics or outings together. The family took time out for a vacation every summer, and later Margaret and Ed took bus tours, which produced lasting friendships. They celebrated milestone anniversaries by taking the family on trips, creating many fond memories with children and grandchildren. Margaret adored her grandchildren and they all adored her too!

A highlight of their years together was building a new home on their farm in 1980. In March 2018, they moved off their beloved farm, into Parkside Assisted Living. Margaret made friends wherever she went, and she loved reaching out to others. She loved visiting with anyone who stopped by. On July 22, 2021, Ed passed away. Shortly after this, Margaret developed health issues, with frequent falls and her cancer returning. Margaret continued living in their apartment until her passing on November 1st. She had wonderful caregivers, with Traditions Health and Parkside Assisted Living staff. They took such good care of her and it was apparent they cared for her as much as she cared for them. The family would like to thank them all for their wonderful care, which was so appreciated!

Margaret is survived by her daughters: Karen (Greg) Jaworsky of Newton, Jan (James) Britton of Denver; son, Dean (Beth) Hein of Hillsboro. Susan Nell Schrepel, 86, died peacefully on September 23, 2022, in Lawrence, surrounded by her children. Susan was born in 1936 in St. Louis, MO, to Charles and Nellie Lee Frederick. Susan married Dan F. Schrepel on July 19, 1958. Susan was preceded in death by her husband, Dan; parents, Charles and Nellie Lee Frederick; and brother, Bob Frederick. She is survived by her children: Ann Klockau (Chris), Jane Schrepel (Eric Boldt), and Robert Schrepel (Kelli Ziegler); grandchildren: Emily Keizer (Dustin Jones), Patrick Keizer, and Henry Boldt; step-grandchildren: Kate Klockau (Ryan Mazur) and Kit Klockau (Gabrielle); sister-in-law, Margey Frederick; and four nephews and their families. Susan graduated from the University of Kansas in 1958 with a degree in education. For 27 years she was an educator with the South Central Kansas Special Education Cooperative. Susan and Dan raised their family in Pratt. Susan loved being a part of the community and was active in many civic organizations, including the Pratt Public Library, the Vernon Filley Art Museum, Pratt Regional Medical Center, and P.E.O. She was also a dedicated member of the Pratt Presbyterian Church. All who knew Susan experienced her gift of hospitality. She welcomed friends and family into her home with open arms, hosting many dinner parties, pool parties, and holiday gatherings. Susan will be remembered for her smile that lit up a room, kind heart, and generous spirit. After a life well lived, Susan is now a lively addition to God’s kingdom. Susan Nell Schrepel, 86, died peacefully on September 23, 2022, in Lawrence, surrounded by her children. Susan was born in 1936 in St. Louis, MO, to Charles and Nellie Lee Frederick. Susan married Dan F. Schrepel on July 19, 1958. Susan was preceded in death by her husband, Dan; parents, Charles and Nellie Lee Frederick; and brother, Bob Frederick. She is survived by her children: Ann Klockau (Chris), Jane Schrepel (Eric Boldt), and Robert Schrepel (Kelli Ziegler); grandchildren: Emily Keizer (Dustin Jones), Patrick Keizer, and Henry Boldt; step-grandchildren: Kate Klockau (Ryan Mazur) and Kit Klockau (Gabrielle); sister-in-law, Margey Frederick; and four nephews and their families. Susan graduated from the University of Kansas in 1958 with a degree in education. He served 40 months in active duty in the South Pacific with the Navy and he also belonged to the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union #171 in Wichita. Ralph was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, #1361, Fraternal Order of the Eagle, #2550 and the Loyal Order of the Moose , #982.Ralph enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, sports and fishing and loved to travel. 

He was a good husband and father and loved having his 13 children and 46 grandchildren and 107 great grandchildren and 18 great great grandchildren with him. Ralph married Madeline Brandt in 1944, Freeda Belt Wiseley in 1972 and Ella Nadine Nicker in 2003, who survives him. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, sons Dennis Nester, Robert Dieker, daughter Debbie Price and son-in-law Kerry Marsh. 

A memorial service will be Thursday, November 3, 2022, 10 am, at Wildmead Cemetery in Nickerson.&nbsp;

Jerry graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1961.&nbsp; He then worked for Republic Paperboard/Sonoco for 38 years, retiring in 2000.&nbsp; Jerry was a passionate Reserve Officer for the Hutchinson Police Department and the Reno County Sheriff’s office from 1973 to 1985.

In addition, he was an avid racquetball player and KU basketball fan.&nbsp; Jerry was a cycling enthusiast that participated in “Bike Across Kansas” yearly for close to a decade.&nbsp; He was a known animal lover and considered his pets to be family.&nbsp; Jerry’s favorite place to be was around a campfire, surrounded by friends and family.&nbsp; Above all, Jerry was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Jerry is survived by:&nbsp; his wife of 52 years, Nancy Roberts; daughters, Donita Perry (James) and Stephanie Roberts; son, J. Donna Blevins was born on Kansas Day, January 29, 1927, to Fay M. and Nellie Catherine (Marshall) Hatcher, in Nickerson.

She was a 1945 graduate of Hutchinson High School. She worked at the Fox Theater as an usherette and at Montgomery Wards.

Donna met Bob Seefeldt at the Naval Air Base and later married on January 6, 1946. On December 23, 1946, Robert Allen was born. On April 19, 1950, Cathy Ann was born, and on May 27, 1956, Julie Kay was born. After raising her children, she went to work for Dr. Robert Shears, then worked at KTVH.

&nbsp;Mother and dad loved to dance and often went to the American Legion for steak night with friends. Donna never missed a Lawrence Welk show and loved all the reruns later in life.

On December 7, 1974, she married Kenneth Blevins in Manhattan. They then moved to Olathe, where she worked at Equitable Life Insurance and for 10 years never missed a day of work. Mother and Ken were owners of Olathe Floral where she was the bookkeeper, inventory manager, and with some family help, floral delivery service. Many Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day and other holidays I drove and she delivered dozens of arrangements. She was quite the gardener and loved her flowers.

Survivors include: daughter, Cathy and husband Larry; son in law, Terry Johnson; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; daughter, Julie Kay Smith Johnson; and son, Robert Allen Seefeldt and his wife, Christine Mae Seefeldt; brothers, Gwyn Hatcher and wife Marylou, and Merlyn Hatcher and wife Carole.

Wayne Allan Unruh, 77, peacefully passed away at his home in Hutchinson, on October 28, 2022, surrounded by his wife, Helen and children, Brad and Emily. He was born on July 23, 1945, in Newton, one of four children to Stella (Reimer) and Raymond Unruh.

Wayne positively touched the lives of everyone he met. While his family mourns the passing of their husband and father, his friends, refereeing buddies, business associates, First Team employees and many others also mourn the loss of this one-of-a-kind man. Wayne was loved by all who knew him. His genuine interest in others often led Wayne to&nbsp; become a trusted friend and mentor to many people. His friends spanned all ages. Wayne had a gentle, unique ability to improve any situation he encountered.

Growing up on the Unruh family farm in the Moundridge, KS area, Wayne had an adventurous childhood. &nbsp;He learned an unwavering work ethic at an early age.&nbsp; He worked for a local farmer, assisting with harvest efforts as far-reaching as western Kansas.&nbsp; The Unruh household was loving and joyous.

He attended a local elementary school and then Moundridge High School. At MHS, Wayne was an athlete who competed in football, basketball, and track. After high school, Wayne went to Bethel College where he once again stood out in athletics as a running back and linebacker on the Thresher football team. It was at Bethel College where Wayne met his future wife, Helen Graber.

On December 23, 1966, Wayne married Helen Graber in Pretty Prairie, Kansas. They celebrated 55 years of marriage. Two of the biggest blessings of their lives were the births of son, Brad and daughter, Emily. &nbsp;Helen and Wayne's circle of wonderful friends, close family, and contributions to their community stand as a testament to their lifelong partnership and love for each other. This partnership undoubtedly propelled Wayne's professional career.

Over a span of about 50 years, Wayne had a successful officiating career, having reached the highest levels of Collegiate basketball officiating. From his very early days of refereeing in country grade schools, and with the support of Helen, he advanced to regional high schools and then small colleges.&nbsp; Wayne's evolution into major college officiating commenced in 1969 when he joined the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. He joined the Big 8 Conference in 1978 and the Missouri Valley Conference in 1981. Additionally, Wayne earned his international FIBA license, leading him to officiate many major basketball tournaments throughout the world. He refereed tournaments in thirteen countries from 1978 to 2013.

A few of his notable basketball officiating accomplishments include: five post-season Big 8 tournaments; four post-season Missouri Valley Conference tournaments; four World University Games; and multiple US Olympic Team exhibition games.

Wayne was inducted into the Kansas Collegiate Officials Hall of Fame in 2015. He continued to serve on the Board of Directors of this organization until his recent passing.

Outside of basketball officiating, Wayne got his career start in education teaching at Sedgwick High School, Wellington High School, and Hutchinson High School. He was an assistant football coach at all three schools. In 1974, Wayne left education to become an administrative assistant with the National Junior College Athletic Association.

In 1996, Wayne and his business partner, Jeff Roth, started First Team Inc., in Hutchinson, KS. As with many small businesses, they persevered through humble beginnings, building First Team into a leading residential and institutional basketball equipment manufacturer in the United States. First Team continues to grow as they expand into new market segments outside of traditional basketball.

Civically, one of Wayne's favorite interests was the Rotary Club of Hutchinson. He became a member in 1999.&nbsp; Wayne embraced the Rotary principles, and the bi-weekly meetings were highlights for him. He served as Rotary president in 2014 and 2015. Wayne and Helen were co-chairs of the High Impact Club of the United Way of Reno County in 2018 and 2019, active in the Hutchinson Meals-on-Wheels program, and the First Presbyterian Church youth LOGOS program.

Wayne is survived by: his wife, Helen of Hutchinson; son, Brad and wife Erica of Las Vegas, NV and grandson, Lucas who attends college in Boston; daughter, Emily and husband Karl Hudson and granddaughter, Stella, of Brooklyn, NY; brother, Calvin and wife Marlene of McPherson; sisters, Maggie and husband Gary Davenport of Overland Park, Debbie and husband Terry Schmidt of Lawrence; in-laws, Mary and Mark Collins of Greely, CO.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; parents-in-law; sister-in-law; and niece.

Cremation has taken place. Wayne Allan Unruh, 77, peacefully passed away at his home in Hutchinson, on October 28, 2022, surrounded by his wife, Helen and children, Brad and Emily. He was born on July 23, 1945, in Newton, one of four children to Stella (Reimer) and Raymond Unruh.Wayne positively touched the lives of everyone he met. While his family mourns the passing of their husband and father, his friends, refereeing buddies, business associates, First Team employees and many others also mourn the loss of this one-of-a-kind man. Wayne was loved by all who knew him. His genuine interest in others often led Wayne to&nbsp; become a trusted friend and mentor to many people. His friends spanned all ages. Wayne had a gentle, unique ability to improve any situation he encountered.Growing up on the Unruh family farm in the Moundridge, KS area, Wayne had an adventurous childhood. &nbsp;He learned an unwavering work ethic at an early age.&nbsp; He worked for a local farmer, assisting with harvest efforts as far-reaching as western Kansas.&nbsp; The Unruh household was loving and joyous.He attended a local elementary school and then Moundridge High School. At MHS, Wayne was an athlete who competed in football, basketball, and track. After high school, Wayne went to Bethel College where he once again stood out in athletics as a running back and linebacker on the Thresher football team. It was at Bethel College where Wayne met his future wife, Helen Graber.On December 23, 1966, Wayne married Helen Graber in Pretty Prairie, Kansas. They celebrated 55 years of marriage. Two of the biggest blessings of their lives were the births of son, Brad and daughter, Emily. &nbsp;Helen and Wayne's circle of wonderful friends, close family, and contributions to their community stand as a testament to their lifelong partnership and love for each other. This partnership undoubtedly propelled Wayne's professional career.Over a span of about 50 years, Wayne had a successful officiating career, having reached the highest levels of Collegiate basketball officiating. From his very early days of refereeing in country grade schools, and with the support of Helen, he advanced to regional high schools and then small colleges.&nbsp; Wayne's evolution into major college officiating commenced in 1969 when he joined the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. He joined the Big 8 Conference in 1978 and the Missouri Valley Conference in 1981. Additionally, Wayne earned his international FIBA license, leading him to officiate many major basketball tournaments throughout the world. He refereed tournaments in thirteen countries from 1978 to 2013.A few of his notable basketball officiating accomplishments include: five post-season Big 8 tournaments; four post-season Missouri Valley Conference tournaments; four World University Games; and multiple US Olympic Team exhibition games.Wayne was inducted into the Kansas Collegiate Officials Hall of Fame in 2015. He continued to serve on the Board of Directors of this organization until his recent passing.Outside of basketball officiating, Wayne got his career start in education teaching at Sedgwick High School, Wellington High School, and Hutchinson High School. He was an assistant football coach at all three schools. In 1974, Wayne left education to become an administrative assistant with the National Junior College Athletic Association.In 1996, Wayne and his business partner, Jeff Roth, started First Team Inc., in Hutchinson, KS. As with many small businesses, they persevered through humble beginnings, building First Team into a leading residential and institutional basketball equipment manufacturer in the United States. First Team continues to grow as they expand into new market segments outside of traditional basketball.Civically, one of Wayne's favorite interests was the Rotary Club of Hutchinson. He became a member in 1999.&nbsp; Wayne embraced the Rotary principles, and the bi-weekly meetings were highlights for him. He served as Rotary president in 2014 and 2015. Wayne and Helen were co-chairs of the High Impact Club of the United Way of Reno County in 2018 and 2019, active in the Hutchinson Meals-on-Wheels program, and the First Presbyterian Church youth LOGOS program.Wayne is survived by: his wife, Helen of Hutchinson; son, Brad and wife Erica of Las Vegas, NV and grandson, Lucas who attends college in Boston; daughter, Emily and husband Karl Hudson and granddaughter, Stella, of Brooklyn, NY; brother, Calvin and wife Marlene of McPherson; sisters, Maggie and husband Gary Davenport of Overland Park, Debbie and husband Terry Schmidt of Lawrence; in-laws, Mary and Mark Collins of Greely, CO.He was preceded in death by: his parents; parents-in-law; sister-in-law; and niece.Cremation has taken place. John Stuart Stephens died October 31, 2022, at the age of 87.&nbsp; He was born in Muskegon, MI, to John Logan Stephens and Viola Anderson Stephens.&nbsp; When John was 13, his father died.&nbsp; His mother moved John and his sister to Coffeyville.&nbsp; In junior high, he accidentally ran his arm through a glass door, severing tendons and nerves in his right arm.&nbsp; The arm was saved, but his hand never returned to normal usage.&nbsp; Despite this handicap, John achieved all-state status in football, basketball, and track.&nbsp; He attended the University of Missouri on a basketball scholarship and went on to receive a MBA from Missouri.

While in graduate school, John met his future wife, Peg Whitney Stephens.&nbsp; They were married August 26, 1962.&nbsp; John and Peg have two daughters, Ann W. Bush of Hutchinson and Catherine L. Stephens of Billings, MT.

After college, John went to work for Sinclair Oil Company, ending his career with them doing contractor sales.&nbsp; In 1974, he and Peg bought City Beverage Company, an Anheuser-Busch distributorship, from Jim and Vivian Peterie in Hutchinson.&nbsp; John had found his niche.&nbsp; He received pleasure in working with his customers, employees, and seeing the company grow from being housed in an air force base Quonset hut to a large climate-controlled warehouse complex.&nbsp; In 2002, John and Peg retired and the business was sold to Ann and Bob Bush.

John loved to travel with family and friends.&nbsp; There were numerous memorable trips to Crested Butte, CO, the Grand Canyon, and Chloride, NM&nbsp; All became the source of much laughter and family folklore.&nbsp; Although John wasn’t known for his patience, he enjoyed fishing, and organized several fishing trips to Canada and Alaska.&nbsp; Upon his return from those trips, John entertained his family, his Fraese Drug coffee group, and his bridge friends with many a humorous fishing tale.

John will be remembered as a man of integrity who loved his family and had little patience for electronics.&nbsp; He never learned to use a computer or a cell phone. John was a member of First Congregational Church, Hutchinson.

He was preceded in death by:&nbsp; his parents; sister, Ruth Stephens Stevens; and son-in-law, Robert C. Bush.

John is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, Peg; daughters, Ann Bush and Catherine Stephens (Jon Bushey); grandson, Jack C. Bush; niece, Elizabeth Ann Hansen (Mark) of Fairview, TX; and nephew, Paul Max Stevens (Cathy) of Mecosta, MI.

Marjorie G. Thompson, 92, entered Heaven's gates on Wednesday, October 26, 2022.&nbsp;

On September 9, 1951 she married the love of her life Dale Thompson. To this union were two sons, George and Jeff.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She is survived by her son George Thompson and his family - Rachel (Kyle) Nilsen and their children Aurora, Zoe and Ella; her son Jeff (Kelly) Thompson and their family Nic, Makayllie, Haydn(Ysa), and Grace and their children Auzae, Phenix, Haydn Jr and Genavieve.

She sang with the Sweet Adalines for many years and later began singing with The Funtastics.&nbsp; Her love of music was a great part of her.&nbsp; Marge also loved being around friends, yet her greatest love and joy was her family. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren which were her highlights of life.&nbsp; Her love&nbsp; and witness will be greatly missed.

Service will be held 11:00 am. Thursday, November 3 at Faith Church, 325 N. Emporia, Valley Center.&nbsp; Graveside following at Hillside Cemetery, Sedgwick.

Michael “Mike” Martinez 69, died peacefully on October 27, 2022 at his home in Newton. 

A rosary will be at 6 pm on Friday November 4, 2022 at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. The family will receive friends following the rosary. Celebration of Life will be Saturday November 5, 2022 from 1-5 at the American Legion in Newton.

Mike is survived by his wife of 26 years, Lynnette, 2 sons, Nicholas Martinez, Jason Kapuscinski (Cara), 2 daughters, Jennifer Mantz (Scott), Margo Stinchcomb (Jon), 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He is also survived by sister Christina “Tina” Trujillo (Dave), brothers Roderick Martinez, Robert Martinez (Lynn), Richard Martinez and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Ramon and Valeria Martinez, sister Mona Martinez.

Mike was born in Montezuma. At age 5 his family moved to Newton where he resided for the rest of his life. He attended school in Newton, graduating in 1971 and attended Cowley County Community College on a football scholarship, graduating in 1973. He started working in the Newton Line Department with KG&amp;E in 1973 and retired from Westar Energy in 2015. Over the years Mike was involved with many activities including the Jaycee’s, Special Olympics and coaching little league football. He officiated high school wrestling for 32 years. His favorite past times were fishing, camping and watching the OU Sooners and Kansas City Chiefs play football. Mike and Lynnette resided in Newton for 26 years and so enjoyed many camping trips with friends and family.

He helped many people in various ways and felt it was most important to take care of and be there for his wife, children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Kathryn Miriam Hoover, 104, passed away in McPherson, Kansas, on September 16, 2022. Mrs. Hoover, called Miriam by family and friends, was born in Miami, New Mexico, on September 2, 1918, the daughter of Harley Melvin and Olive Elsie (Pearson) Coppock. At age 2, she moved with her family to Ohio, which was her residence until she married. Miriam attended and graduated from Tippecanoe City Exempted Village Schools, Tipp City, Ohio.&nbsp; Following high school, she graduated at age 18 with a 2-year Normal Degree from Manchester College, North Manchester, Indiana. &nbsp;Midway through her professional career, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Northern Colorado University, Greeley, Colorado. Miriam was united in marriage to Wilbur Replogle Hoover (1917-2003) on May 30, 1942, at Middle District Church of the Brethren, Tipp City, Ohio.&nbsp;&nbsp; Wilbur served as Pastor of Church of the Brethren congregations in Nebraska, Colorado and Missouri and then became Field Secretary for the district, the position which brought Miriam to McPherson in 1971. In addition to her obligations as a Pastor’s wife, Miriam taught 3rd and 4th grade in Tipp City, Ohio; multiple grades in a one room school at Cambridge, Nebraska; Kindergarten in Enders, Nebraska; 3rd grade and Special Education in Rocky Ford, Colorado; and Special Education in Haven, and Buhler High School, Buhler. Miriam was an active member of the McPherson Church of the Brethren, serving her church in many capacities. Following her retirement from teaching, she volunteered her time not only with the church but also with the Cedars Health Care Center where she was a resident. Miriam was a member and past president of the Exceptional Children’s Organization of Reno County, and a member of Cosmos Club and of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.&nbsp;Miriam was a supportive friend to many and an advocate for peace and justice. Surviving family members include her children and their spouses,&nbsp;Modena Elizabeth Wilson (Gary) of Chicago, Illinois; Marlin Coppock Hoover (Mary Nell) of Flossmoor, Illinois; Stewart Mark Hoover (Karen) of Boulder, Colorado; and Marsha Kathryn Hoover (Thomas Karaba) of Chicago, Illinois; and by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Miriam was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and all seven siblings and their spouses.
