
Betty Jane Barchesky, 98, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 8:11 a.m., Monday, March 6, 2023 at her residence surrounded by her family in McPherson.
Betty was born in McPherson, Kansas on September 22, 1924, a daughter of Oscar Werner and Josephine Marie (Peterson) Nordstrom.
Betty attended the McPherson area grade schools and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson, Kansas in 1942.
Betty Jane Nordstrom was united in marriage to Walter John Barchesky on October 24, 1943 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hays, Kansas.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in McPherson.
Betty and her husband Walter were one of the founding families that started St. Joseph's Catholic School in the 1950's and she was a member of St. Joseph's Altar Society and served her church in other capacities through the years.
Through the years Betty was a homemaker, worked as a cashier for C.R. Anthony Company in Salina and McPherson, worked as a office secretary for the McPherson Ice Company, worked in the office of Consumers Cooperative Association of McPherson, and worked 28 years as a secretary for the Dean of Academic Affairs and Administrative office at McPherson College, McPherson, Kansas until she retired in 1990. She also was a member of the American Legion Post 24 Ladies Auxiliary for over 60 years; life member of the V.F.W. Post 2715 Ladies Auxiliary for over 50 years; 8-40 Chapeau of Hutchinson, Kansas; Progressive Club for over 50 years.
She is survived by her children, Cynthia Barchesky, of McPherson, Kansas and Barbara Hyman and her husband Sam, of Omaha, Nebraska; She is also survived by her 3 grandchildren, Leah J. Fowler, Timothy J. McDonald and Tiffany M. Dziurawiec(Gregory); 2 Step-Grandchildren, Tim Hyman(Janelle) and Sonja Gudgel(Mark); 9 Great-grandchildren, Emily, Caleb, Brianna, Kylie, Makenna, Brooke, Owen, Joseph and Chloe; 1 Step-great-granddaughter,Ashley; other family to mention - nieces and nephews, Sherri Clark, Barbara Hooper, Kay Zook, Annette Lewis, Donna Johnson, Jan Gerber, Jeanette Smith, Dana Nordstrom, Deana Rubel, Dawn Biscaro, Steve Nordstrom.; Special friends, Julie Roberts and family, Maridan and Larry Christensen and Lan Nelson; other relatives and a host of friends.
Betty was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed her involvement in many activities and enjoyed her club work over the years. Bingo was a great past time for her and she enjoyed traveling with her husband.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar Werner and Josephine Marie (Peterson) Nordstrom; her husband, Walter Barchesky; an infant daughter Marcia Ann Barchesky;her four sisters, Helen Young, Evelyn Hooper, Edna Dillon, and Virginia Seckman and her three brothers, Roger, Marlin, and Frank Nordstrom.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 12, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, McPherson, Kansas. Rosary at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 13, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, McPheson, Kansas with Father Ben Shockey officiating.
Burial will be at the McPherson Cemetery McPherson, Kansas.
