HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Online registration for the Sand Plum Bicycle Classic is now closed. You still have time to register at the Hutch Rec offices at 17 E. 1st.

The two-day event kicks off Saturday evening at 5:30 with a family bike ride around Carey Park. The ride will be around the park with ice cream at the Salt City Splash parking lot. The fee is $15 per family.

On Sunday, June 6, the classic ride kicks off with the usual three distances for riders starting at the state fairgrounds Oz Breezeway. The rides again this year are 14, 28 and 50 miles with optional 28- and 50-mile gravel rides.&nbsp;

The 14-mile route will take riders to the Highlands and back. The 28-mile route goes to Nickerson, then over to the Highlands before returning to the fairgrounds. The 50-mile route continues from the Highlands and takes riders farther north of town on Plum, then over to Medora Road before returning to the fairgrounds.

The registration is $25 and includes a shirt, refreshments at SAG stops along the routes and lunch.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — One person was injured in a two-vehicle accident in South Hutchinson on Tuesday. Police say Angelic Gallegos of Garden City was at the 1800 block of Main when she hit a vehicle driven by Crystal Weatherspoon of Wichita.

Weatherspoon was taken by EMS to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment of her injuries. No other injuries were reported. The accident happened around 4:20 p.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Xavier Jameson, a recent graduate of Hutchinson High School, was selected for the National Honor Choir, a premier choir through the National Association for Music Education.

Applicants are selected from submissions nationwide. Jameson was one of 11 Kansans selected to be a part of this premier singing group for the 2020-2021 year.&nbsp;

Jameson was a member of the Hutchinson vocal department all four years of high school. He was a part of The Expressives for two of those years. Xavier also participated in KSHSAA solo for three years and was slated to participate for a fourth year until COVID caused the event to be canceled. He also participated in KMEA for four years. He made district three of those years and state for two, and has now added the National Honor Choir to his portfolio.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Some warmer, drier weather is a welcome sight for wheat farmers. The cool, wet weather has brought on some disease pressure on the crop this spring. Still, the latest numbers from the Kansas Ag Statistics Service are positive.

The latest condition report shows 61% of the wheat crop is in good to excellent condition, 25% fair and just 14% poor to very poor condition. 

In south-central Kansas, 97% of the wheat is headed and 39% has started to turn color. The crop is still a little behind in maturing statewide with 95% headed. That’s near the 93% mark last year and 94% for the five-year average. 

Coloring was 14%, near the 15% mark last year, and behind the 29% five-year average.

Wheat crop continues to run a little behind schedule

NEWTON, Kan. — Conklin Cars announced on Wednesday that it has acquired Robbins Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Newton. Conklin Newton is now offering Chevrolet, Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram at 1500 E. 3rd St.

In the purchase, Conklin Cars acquired the Robbins dealership building and land located at 1515 E. Broadway, not far from the current Conklin dealership.

Conklin says it will continue to use that location for Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram service as it renovates the current location to feature new brands. The new and preowned sales department and inventory will be immediately relocated to the 1500 E. 3rd St. location with the Chevrolet and Ford brands.&nbsp;

The dealership is located directly off I-135 and Spencer Road in Newton.

Conklin Cars expands in Newton

Kan. — Buhler USD 313 will have a new website before school starts again in the fall.

"Really, what brought it up at the beginning was, when we started looking at our communication structure," said USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman. "We have lots of ways to communicate, which is great, but sometimes that's also a disadvantage, because people are like, was that supposed to be on Facebook, was that coming through an alert? How did I know about that? Was that on their website? This will kind of combine it all into one area."

Parents from the district should see much more seamless communication once everything is up and running.

"The most exciting part is, we're going to get an app," Couchman said. "With that app, it will be much easier to access things like our lunch menus, calendars, you can subscribe to a building. It's going to be integrated with our social media platforms, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It will be a great way of sending alerts to our families."

Kyle McClure, the district's Director of Innovation, has already shown mockups to Couchman and they are working on the final touches of the design in hopes to launch the site in the coming weeks.

Kan. — The summer travel season is underway, but gas prices in Kansas are still lower than in some parts of the country.

"Kansas is at $2.81 a gallon," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "We're actually down one cent from where we were a week ago. Reno County is at $2.77, lower than the statewide average."

Demand is strong though, so prices have some support.

"Demand has steadily jumped week over week since the end of April, pushing supply down to a typical summer level," Steward said. "For example, for the week ending May 21, demand jumped to 9.4 million barrels per day. That's the highest level since early March of 2020."

The national average is at $3.04 a gallon, Kansas is the seventh least expensive state for gasoline in the country.

"It's always interesting to take a look at the extremes. Mississippi is the lowest price at $2.70 a gallon. California is at $4.20 for their average price for regular gasoline."

Traditionally, gas prices continue to increase as the weather warms and as more people drive on summer vacation.

Kan. — Hutchinson Police will provide an escort to start the HutchCC Blue Dragons trip to the NJCAA Football National Championship Game.

Hutchinson Airport Manager Pieter Miller talked to the Hutchinson City Council Tuesday about changing the scope of work at the airport on its pavement maintenance project associated with the Wells Aircraft parking apron and taxi-lane since bids for the project as a whole came in well above engineer's estimates.

"The total grant project, when it was scoped back in 2019 was just under $300,000 was the engineer's estimate, about $293,000. That's why the grant that we put in was only for 90% of that, about $263,000. Things are a little more expensive now than it was in 2019. We worked with Ward Davis and we've decided to basically phase this project."

The part that they are leaving out is an area where economies of scale could help on the price.

"We removed the crack seal and seal coat portion of this project," Miller said. "We plan to include that as part of the residential mill and overlay project that bids, usually late this year, so we would get a much better price per linear foot for the seal coat. Ward was amenable to this. We're just going to be doing the pavement repair portions, the concrete work, the drainage improvements."

The council approved the contract with Ward Davis for $181,429.75.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Mosquitoes aren’t the only thing thriving in the cool wet weather this spring. Ticks are also plentiful in Kansas.

Ticks spread a number of diseases that can cause hospitalization and even death. In Kansas the primary concerns are Lyme disease, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.&nbsp;

Adult ticks can also feed on a variety of hosts including cattle, horses, sheep, dogs, cats, and humans. Adult ticks are often encountered in Kansas from late February through early June.&nbsp;

The best way to prevent tick bites is to wear long sleeves and pants. You should tuck your pants into your socks if possible. Wearing light colored clothing will help you spot ticks as well. Also, insect repellent will work most of the time.

Removing a tick that’s latched on requires one simple thing, a tweezers that will let you get as close to the head of the tick as possible.&nbsp;

Pull slowly and straight out from the bite area. Do not twist or crush the tick. After removing the tick, if you feel ill or the bite area becomes red, seek medical attention.

Ticks are out in force this spring

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutch Rec and the Salt City Splash will host several events for youth and adults this summer..

Junior lifeguard training will be offered to those ages 11-14 from July 6 through the 22. The fee is $35 and scholarships are available. This will introduce youth to becoming a lifeguard.

The Hutch Rec swim team will also be offered this summer for those ages 7-14. The swimming will run June 15 through July 22 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

For adults, swim lessons will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting June 15th. Lesson times are 8 to 8:45 p.m. The fee is $45.

Water aerobics will be taught for adults in two sessions. June 15 through July 1 and then again July 6 through July 22. Cost is $30.

Salt City Splash activities scheduled for youth and adults

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There will be multiple candidates for three of the open seats for the Hutchinson City Council and several school boards will have competitive races when the municipal and school board elections happen in November.

Three seats are up for grabs for the Hutchinson City Council . Greg Fast, Brock Wells and Cheryl Thompson are running in the southwest district, Incumbent Sara Bagwell, Marla Jean Booher and Charles Johnston will be on for the at-large seat, and Jill Gumble and Jon Richardson will vie for the northwest district city council seat.

Three board seats are up for grabs in Hutchinson USD 308 with five candidates on the ticket. That includes Kail Dennison, Kian Williams, Tyson Thrall, Cheryl Thompson and Laura Corey.

All three seats in the Nickerson USD 309 school district will have races. Tyson Weber and Luke Herren will run for position four, Brent Engelland and Dave Hawthorn will run for position five and Jay Mitzner and Jeff Stroberg will run for position six. There will be two races in the Buhler USD 313 school district. Jesse Tanksley and Greg Lackey will run against each other for position four and Monte Cross and Robin Swanson will vie for position six.

A number of local races in the November election

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss sees the growth of government under President Biden's proposed budget as a negative.

"We're going to see an overheated economy," Goss said. "The federal government is expanding. The latest proposed budget for next year is $6 trillion. I'm sorry to be laughing, but that is out there. That's going to have inflationary pressures. The Federal Reserve says that they see this as transitory. We hope and pray it is transitory."

Goss noted that it isn't the same as the late 1970s under President Carter.

"We don't have the oil prices pushing," Goss said. "Oil prices are higher. We're now at $68 a barrel, but we're not seeing that supply-side push in terms of oil. We are seeing it in other areas. For example, lumber. We are seeing that growth there, out the roof. We're seeing housing prices 12% growth year over year."

Another drag on growth in the opinion of several of the managers Goss surveys is a lack of skilled workers.

"Twenty-three percent of the supply managers listed the shortage of workers and the supply of workers as being the number one challenge for 2021 to their company," Goss said. 

Due to the bounce back growth of the economy, however, the overall Mid-America Business Conditions Index was at a strong 72.3 for May. Anything above 50 is considered growth.

Goss: Growth of government could 'overheat' economy

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas Court of Appeals has vacated the sentence for a Hutchinson man convicted of a home invasion in 2018.

The Court of Appeals sided with the state in the case of Titus Thompson. A jury convicted Thompson of robbery, burglary, and aggravated burglary. He was found not guilty of kidnapping. The district court granted Thompson a downward durational departure sentence from his nearly 13 year sentence and instead sentenced him to just under six years.

The state immediately appealed the sentence arguing that Judge Trish Rose failed to come up with any substantial reason to grant the departure. And the Court of Appeals agreed stating the court should not have been able to find substantial and compelling reason to lower Thompsons sentence while at the same time citing that the reasons to do so are not strong. It also stated that the court failed to articulate reasons why it imposed the reduced sentence.

In October 2018, Thompson and John Sullivan forced their way into Leon Levasseur's home in search of prescription pills.&nbsp;

Thompson then forced Levasseur into the vehicle with him. Levasseur had his dog with him but he feared for its life, so he threw his dog out the car window. Thompson took Levasseur to another location near Burrton where he was able to escape.

The driver of the vehicle, Amanda Gresham was sentenced to 10 years in prison Sullivan’s earliest possible release date is April of 2025.

Kansas State Fair reports scam going around

The Hutchinson Municipal Band's season starts Tuesday night at the Farmer's Market pavilion.

"We'll be there for several weeks," said Randy Johnston with the band. "We'll start with the concert band tonight. We'll use the Jazz Band unit next week and then switch back to the concert band and we're hopeful that we may be able to use our Hutchinson Community Foundation funded performance space down in Carey Park later in the year."

Some version of the band will play each Tuesday between now and July 20 at 8 p.m.

"We needed a big enough space that we could accomodate maybe up to 50 musicians," Johnston said. "It will be electrical powered on the edges, so we're hoping that not only the Municipal Band but other units can use it, as well."

If everything is on schedule, the band hopes to be in its new space for the Jazz Band's June 22 performance.

"We will be playing for the Patriots Parade this year," Johnston said. "We do maintain our quintet to do various events throughout the year. When Veterans Day comes, we'll have a unit for that, but we'll also do Christmas music and other things with our brass quintets."

The Hutchinson Municipal Band is a 501c3 non-profit corporation that is wholly funded by the City of Hutchinson and Reno County. As such, all concerts are free and open to the public.

The Hutchinson City Council will discuss the Atrium Hotel purchase process with the City Attorney as part of an executive session June 15. There appears to be an issue with the owner and the bank who still holds that owner's note and the city.

"Our big concern right now is how we set it up procedurally, the mechanism for protecting the city against the bank's interest and the owner's interest, so that once we draft this thing, we're protected and in a position that puts us in, maybe not first position, but one that's respective of the debt owed," said City Manager Jeff Cantrell.

Council member Jon Daveline wants to be clear that he doesn't want any entanglements if the city is going to buy the hotel.

"I'm sure you will consider making sure that there are provision for a lien release by the Dallas bank, to make sure that, at some point, immediately upon the acquisition we retain title, secure title," Daveline said. "We remove Mr. Joseph out of the equation completely, that we have complete control of the property itself."

Cantrell said that right now it would take a cash deal to cut the current owner and the bank out and because the City was planning to pay for it with future bed tax receipts, they hadn't worked the details out yet. City Attorney Paul Brown was optimistic, though.

"I'm thinking that it is executive session," Brown said. "I can tell you, from my end of things, that it will be ready for the next council meeting."

One of the items that can allow for an executive session of a governing body, according to K.S.A. 75-4319 is for the preliminary discussion of the acquisition of real property.

Atrium Hotel deal part of executive session later this month

The Hutchinson City Council has scheduled its next budget discussions for Thursday, June 17th at 6 p.m. 

Valuation information that the council needs to make some of its decisions will be available June 15th. 

A challenge for the council and all local governing bodies in Kansas will be whether or not it can stay flat or below the new Revenue Neutral Rate and not have to deal with the additional reporting requirements that an increase in taxes as a result of valuation increases would trigger.

The meeting on the 17th is likely the last budget meeting for the council in June, as Mayor Steve Garza is scheduled to be out of town later in the month.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Red Cross will hold three blood drives in Reno County in June.

Blood drives in Hutchinson will be held June 4th at Advance America at 921 E 4th Suite B from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. and June 8th from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Center Amish Mennonite Church at 7611 W. Morgan Avenue.

A third blood drive is scheduled for June 9th at the Nickerson Community Center at 11 N. Nickerson street in Nickerson from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
