Dillons now hiring for summer and beyond

Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will consider three projects on Tuesday.

The first is pavement maintenance associated with the Wells Aircraft parking apron and taxi-lane at the Hutchinson Airport. The project has now been broken up into two phases. The first is the asphalt patching, concrete repair and installation of a valley gutter. The council is set to approve Ward Davis Builders to do the work for $181,429.75.

The second project is the development of a river access point at the former Fun Valley waterslide site. The project includes improvements to the existing gravel road, the development of a new parking lot and a path with steps leading to a sandbar along the river. This is a considerably reduced scope from the project as originally bid. Ward Davis Builders is also the recommended contractor here, at a cost of $76,775.

The third project for approval Tuesday is improvements to Bernard White Park. The Creekside neighborhood asked for improvements to the park. The council will consider removal of the outdated playground equipment and the undersized basketball court. There will be a new walking trail to provide better connectivity to the neighborhood and the newly rebuilt trail access point on Brookside Street, along with a new half court basketball court and new picnic shelter. Prairie Land Works is the recommended contractor, at a cost not to exceed $125,000.

The council will also discuss the  VanBuren Street and Heather Parkway stop sign request that was brought to them a few weeks ago.

City council considering projects Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With summer quickly approaching, Westlake Ace Hardware stores throughout the Hutchinson area are gearing up to host their annual fan drive benefiting The Salvation Army. The fan drive will be held June 3-20.

During the fan drive, Westlake Ace customers are asked to donate by rounding up their purchase at the register. All donations go toward buying new box fans for the Hutchinson Salvation Army. Last year, Hutchinson-area Westlake customers donated more than $1,700, equating to 137 fans given to the local Salvation Army for distribution to fellow citizens.

“Summer is a wonderful season, but it also brings life-threatening heat to individuals and families struggling to pay utilities and rent due to pandemic poverty,” Commissioner Kenneth G. Hodder, National Commander for The Salvation Army, said. “Westlake Ace Hardware’s annual fan drive will keep thousands of vulnerable people cool and safe despite the heat.”

Salvation Army fan drive begins June 3

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 will be hosting a special Board of Education Meeting on Monday, June 7, at 6 p.m. to allow <a href="https://rsp-associates.com/index.html">RSP</a> to give a presentation on its work with the district.

Over the last year, USD 308 formed the group HUSAC (Hutchinson Unified Superintendent Advisory Council) to work on issues surrounding COVID-19 protocol and safety. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the deadline to file one day away, the number of candidates running for the Hutchinson City Council has increased over the past month.

All three seats will have at least two candidates running. In the southwest district, Greg Fast and Brock Wells have filed. The northwest district also has two candidates with Jill Gumble and Jon Richardson on the list. The at-large seat is also up for grabs with incumbent Sara Bagwell and Marla Jean Booher both filing for the position.

There are several seats that will be contested for area school boards. In Nickerson USD 309, Tyson Weber and Luke Herren have filed for position four, and Brent Engelland and Dave Hawthorne have filed for position five.&nbsp;

In Haven USD 312, Darby Borntrager and Richard Walsten have filed for position four.

And in Buhler USD 313, Jesse Tanksley and Greg Lackey have filed for position four, and Monte Cross and Robin Swanson have filed for position six.

It's just about time for the YMCA summer swim season to start.

"Starting on June 1, we will be outside at the Salt City Splash," said head coach Sarah Johnson. "We swim in the mornings there. It's a 50-meter pool, so it's actually longer than the Y. We just get kids in the water and have fun and learn the sport."

Kids can start swimming on the team once they can make it across the pool.

"We actually have several swimmers that have started when they were five," Johnson said. "We have a couple that are six and seven, but we go all the way up to, we have some college kids that come back and swim with us in the summer."

HYSC summer swim season starts June 1

Due to the rain and anticipated wet conditions on Monday, the ceremonies that were scheduled for Memorial Day have been canceled.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Memorial Day services are scheduled for two locations in the area on Monday. The first will be held at the <a href="https://hutchpost.com/pages/reno-county-veterans-memorial">Veterans Memorial</a> in South Hutchinson starting at 9 a.m.

The service will include opening remarks from Kelly Danyluk, chairman of the Reno County Veterans Memorial, and music from the Hutchinson Municipal Band brass quintet.

&nbsp;A wreath will be placed at the memorial by the American Legion and American Legion Riders. The address will be given by John Harlow, Commander of the American Legion.&nbsp;

Following that service, the American Legion and VFW will hold a memorial service at the Memorial Park Cemetery west of Hutchinson.

The Municipal Band will play once again along with the presentation of the roses with AMVETS, American Legion and Auxiliary, VFW and Auxiliaries, the American Legion Riders and the Sons of the American Legion present.

A reading of VFW and American Legion members who have died in the last year will be read. Scott Miller will present the message and Dave Schoonover will lead the ceremony honoring POWs and MIAs.

Both ceremonies will be followed by a luncheon at the American Legion.&nbsp;

Memorial Day services canceled

LYONS, Kan. (AP) — The mother of the man who killed his father and shot two Rice County law officers in 2019 will go to jail for providing a gun to her son. 

Shirley Loder, who was 67 when she was charged in January, was ordered Friday to serve 60 days in jail before serving probation for the rest of a year after she pleaded no contest.  Prosecutors allege Loder gave her son, David Madden, a weapon he used in April 2019. 

He shot and killed his father and also shot two Rice County Sheriff's Department officers before killing himself. Madden was a convicted felon who was not legally allowed to have a gun.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After having the schedule reduced to three days per week in October of 2020, Amtrak will restore daily service on the Southwest Chief starting Monday.

Under the current schedule, the Chief departs Chicago on Monday, Thursday and Saturday and arrives in Hutchinson on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. The eastbound train comes through Hutchinson on Thursday, Saturday and Monday. One thing that is still being held back because of the pandemic is the dining car food service. Traditional dining service is still suspended until June 30. It was to be re-established June 1.

The daily service begins with the trains leaving Chicago and Los Angeles on Monday. The westbound train arrives in Hutchinson at 3:20 a.m. with the eastbound train pulling into Hutchinson at 1:17 a.m.&nbsp;

At last check, the train leaving Chicago for Hutchison on Monday was more than 85% full.

The “Don’t Weaponize the IRS Act,” introduced earlier this month in Congress by Republicans would prevent the IRS from mandating that 501(c)(4) nonprofits identify their top donors in filings to the agency. The President of the Kansas Policy Institute, James Franko, believes donors being able to give to organizations and not be outed is important.

"It's a fundamental belief in the First Amendment," Franko said. "We have the freedom to speak, we have the freedom to associate. Without that protection that extends to not just groups like ours, think tanks that are engaged in the policy process, but all sorts of other non-profits, from churches to the synagogue to women's shelters or whatever it is, we have that fundamental right to speak and associate on the things that we're passionate about, without fear of either accidental or, in some cases, deliberate exposure and possible retribution."

Mitch McConnell, Mike Braun and the 43 other Republican senators, including both from Kansas, who signed on as co-sponsors say the measure would protect outside groups from discrimination by the IRS. 

"There's a through line that's not just about the current legislation at the federal level," Franko said. "There's actually a case at the U.S. Supreme Court that started in California when Kamala Harris was the AG and is now continued. It deals with these same things. It goes back to the IRS scandal of the Obama years. Indeed, it goes back further, to when the state of Alabama was trying to compel the disclosure of the NAACP's donors in the 1950s."

As a contrast, Democrats’ campaign finance legislation, the ‘For the People Act,’ would make sweeping changes to election law and require all nonprofits that spend more than $10,000 on elections to disclose the names and addresses of donors who give more than $10,000. Franko doesn't see that as a good idea.

"It's about the speech that yes, you agree with, but it's also about the speech of groups that you don't agree with, necessarily," Franko said. "Just as our rights are protected, your rights are protected, the rights of a progressive who is donating to moveon.org or whatever, their rights are protected."

Republicans argue that disclosure requirements discourage potential donors from making contributions out of fear of recrimination from their political opponents.

World No Tobacco Day is May 31

Hutchinson Monarchs owner Marc Blackim is excited for the upcoming season, as the team prepares to start play June 1, weather permitting.

"We like to get as many guys from the area as possible, whether they are actual Hutch residents or Hutchinson Community College players, so they have some tie to the Hutchinson area," Blackim said. "I think a lot of the teams throughout the area are trying to get as many local guys as they can."

There are some restrictions on the roster construction in summer collegiate baseball.

"On a normal year, all that the NCAA allows is four players from a Division I or Division II school," Blackim said. "Last year was a little different, due to COVID, because so many leagues canceled and didn't play last year, we were allowed to have eight."

Blackim is also excited for the additional opportunity of the NBC World Series playing more of its games at Hobart-Detter this year.

"Fans are going to be able to see some of the best talent they've ever seen," Blackim said. "It's going to bring money into the community like we've never seen before. It's just a huge opportunity for not only the Monarchs, but the city of Hutchinson."

The Monarchs players whose college seasons are done are already in town, with the first three games against the El Dorado Broncos scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Hobart-Detter.

"In Kansas, we're at $2.82 a gallon, which is actually down two cents over the past week," Steward said. "If we look to where we were a year ago, we were at $1.68, as usual, we're at 22 cents less than the national average. That puts Kansas at 7th cheapest in the nation."

Reno County is also in a relatively good position in the state.

Reno County is at $2.79, three cents less than the statewide average," Steward said.

Steward isn't ruling out the possibility of $3 gas sometime this summer, though he notes that it would take a lot more demand to get there than we've seen thus far.

Pools open for business

PRATT, Kan. — Even though summer is still a ways off, one area lake is already feeling the effects of blue-green algae.&nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued an algae watch for Marion Reservoir. A watch means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.

Boating and fishing are safe but direct contact with the water should be avoided in areas where the algae is present.

The green slime is usually a part of the hot summer months but is already showing up at area lakes.

Marion Reservoir under algae alert as holiday approaches

Reno Valley Middle School band teacher Dan Brinkley is the May Teacher of the Month presented by Allen Samuels CDJR. He also teaches beginning band at South Hutchinson Elementary and is an assistant director at Nickerson High School.

"You do have to choose to be in the band class," Brinkley said. "There's also some parents that kind of want to legacy their kids in and then they're a little reluctant. We're doing our best to kind of keep the kids excited about it."

One of the important things kids learn in band is how teamwork helps make the music happen.

"If you're on a basketball team, only five of you get to go out at a time, the rest of you are riding the bench and not really doing anything, but you do all the practice to prepare for it," Brinkley said. "In band, when we go to a concert or we're playing on the marching band field, it's all in and we need 100% out of everybody in order to put our finished product on the field or on the concert stage."

Nominator Lisa McDaniel said that Brinkley is her favorite teacher and that she is grateful to have someone who helped her fall in love with her trumpet and playing music in general.

"If you apply yourself and really learn your instrument, there are opportunities as you get older," Brinkley said. "There's community band. I work with a teacher, she actually works and does pit orchestras on the side. She played flute through college. There's always opportunities for you to keep playing and singing. You've just got to look for them."

Brinkley sees his biggest goal as a music educator is to instill a love of music in students that compels them to continue to make it a part of their life even when they are adults.

May Teacher of the Month: Dan Brinkley's love for band handed down to students

Kan. — The Alzheimer's Association held a sign up event in Hutchinson Thursday to kick off the fundraising for this October's Walk to End Alzheimer's.

"Our office serves 69 counties in Kansas," walk organizer Stephanie Hartung said. "We have seven walks here in Kansas, Hutchinson being one of them. The funds raised by that walk help us ensure that we can educate and train more individuals, volunteers, we have wonderful volunteers that help us lead those support groups."

Hartung was at Hollie's Sweet Treats to answer questions from the public about the association and its efforts.

"Typically, for Hutchinson in the past we've had a little over 100 participants," Hartung said. "We are back in person, so it will look a lot like it did in 2019."

Forty-four participants were registered after the Thursday event, with 25 teams. <a href="https://act.alz.org/site/TR/Walk2021/KS-CentralandWesternKansas?fr_id=14478&amp;pg=entry">The event is at Gowans Stadium at 9 a.m. Saturday, October 9th</a>.

KINGMAN COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 6p.m. Thursday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Volkswagen Passat driven by Jared Benjamin&nbsp;McGinnis, 31, Wichita, was eastbound on U.S. 54 one mile east of SW 50th Avenue.

The vehicle rear-ended a 2017 Ford Expedition driven by Kendra Kae Handen, 44, Kingman, who was stopped waiting to turn northbound on Kansas 11.

EMS transported McGinnis to a Wichita hospital and Harnden to the Kingman hospital.&nbsp; Two children in the SUV were not injured. McGinnis was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

TOPEKA, Kan. — Chief Justice Marla Luckert appointed Chief Judge Patty Macke Dick to a four-year term on the Kansas Judicial Council.

Macke Dick serves in the 27th Judicial District, which is Reno County. She will serve on the council from July 1 through June 30, 2025.

She succeeds Chief Judge Kim Cudney on the council. Cudney serves in the 12th Judicial District, composed of Cloud, Jewell, Lincoln, Mitchell, Republic and Washington counties. Her term ends June 30.

The Legislature created the Kansas Judicial Council to study the judicial branch of government and recommend improvements in the administration of justice. The council undertakes studies in many areas of law and may accept assignments from the Legislature and the Kansas Supreme Court.

PLEASANTVIEW, Kan. — A local nursery is working to replenish its stock at one of its satellite stores after Wednesday's weather caused damage to its inventory.

Stutzman's Greenhouse stores in McPherson felt the brunt of the severe weather. According to Stutzman's, large hail shredded nearly all plants in McPherson.&nbsp; Ben Miller of Stutzman's says the hail was the size of baseballs and was still melting on the fabric roof Thursday afternoon.

Miller says that three trucks have been bringing in new inventory and all should be back in place for Friday.

Kansas State Treasurer candidate Republican Steven Johnson believes his service in both the private sector and in government has prepared him well for this position.

"It's defined as the CFO for the state's bank," Johnson said. "It handles the cash flow that goes through and the public monies that are paid into the treasury."

The mission of the state treasurer is to manage public funds to ensure sound financial practices. Johnson's background would seem to give him strong skills, particularly his work in the Kansas Legislature on the Pensions and Benefits Committee.

"KPERS, specifically, that's the state employee pension," Johnson said. "That's a big liability. We currently have about $23 billion in that fund and we need $6 billion more to have fully funded it. While we've made huge progress and we have changed that by a factor of billions, we still have a ways to go. The Treasurer is one of the members of the KPERS board."

Also, he sees the role of that department head as advising the legislature on areas where it can afford to use funds differently when conditions warrant and where things need to be left alone.

"I think the treasurer really needs to help look long-term, because that KPERS piece is a long-term portfolio," Johnson said. "The other funds that we handle like the Health Care Stabilization Fund, and there are several others that flow through the treasurer's office, I think that perspective is one that you can greatly add to in helping with the planning process."

Current State Treasurer Lynn Rogers was appointed to the post by Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly when Republican Jake LaTurner was elected to Congress.

State treasurer candidate Johnson cites background to serve

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Kansas City man who was part of a shooting that injured two people near the Hutchinson Walmart will be sentenced in Reno County District Court Friday.

Deante Watley-Jones was convicted for shooting Darin Rodriguez November 9th, 2019 during a confrontation between occupants of two vehicles.

According to Police, the argument started near the intersection of Ring Rd. and 17th Avenue. When Rodriguez got out of the vehicle he was allegedly shot by Jones who was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle. The bullet then went through the open door of the victim's car, ricocheted off the interior, and grazed the driver of the suspect's car, 74-year-old Paula Thomas.

Both victims were taken to the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where they were treated and released.

Sentencing for Watley-Jones is set for 2 p.m.
