HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutch Rec announced that the sign-up deadline for the first session of swim lessons is Wednesday.&nbsp;

The first of three sessions begins June 14. Two other sessions will be held starting July 5 and July 19. The cost is $34 and scholarships are available. Sign-up deadline for first session of swim lessons is Wednesday

Kan. — A free-market economist who worked for two Republican governors in Kansas is seeking the Republican nomination for State Treasurer. Michael Austin announced his candidacy Monday afternoon.

"We're looking at three main policy points," Austin said. "Expanding educational freedom to all Kansans, expanding financial freedoms to future generations and then empowering Kansans by limiting government."

Prior to running for office, Austin was an economist for the Sandlian Center for Entrepreneurial Government at the Kansas Policy Institute.

"One of the things the State Treasurer can most certainly do, is expand access to the tax-advantaged education savings accounts," Austin said. "Thanks to President Trump, Kansans can use these education savings accounts for K-12 education as well as higher education. By expanding the amount of families that can use that, we give families the resources and freedom to leave if they don't like what their schools are doing."

Austin wants to see Kansans remain self-sufficient, rather than counting on government to solve their problems.

"As State Treasurer, which is an office directly accountable to Kansans, I will do what I have always done and that's be a taxpayer advocate," Austin said. "Working with me, we can find ways to empower Kansans by limiting government and putting the focus on taxpayers first."

Austin graduated from Topeka High and Washburn University before getting his master's in economics at the University of Kansas.

Economist throws hat in State Treasurer race

Kan. — The State Board of Education on Tuesday will consider whether to allow computer science to count as a core math or science credit toward high school graduation.

"People certainly recognize the importance of computers in our lives," said Mark Tallman with the Kansas Association of School Boards. "Some sense of computers, I think people would argue, would be helpful. Maybe computer science, in some ways as taught, is a lot of application, but may not provide, kind of the foundational math or science skills that you might want, to be ready for general college classes."

Currently in Kansas, high school students must take three units of science and three units of math. The recommendation would allow local boards to substitute one unit of computer science for either one unit of science or math.

"What do students need to be successful?" Tallman asked. "I think everyone agrees, we want kids to be successful, sometimes the debate is what you need. You may think you're only interested in computers. You might get that as a background, but what if you change your mind? Will you have the other skills necessary?"

Kansas is one of only two states that counts computer science as an elective, but not as a core graduation credit. Under the proposal, districts could allow a computer science course to be counted for a math or science credit in situations where the student has covered the three topics of physical, biological and earth and space science, or the two topics of algebraic and geometry concepts.

"Students respond better in school if they see the relevance," Tallman said. "Sometimes, rather theoretical courses may not have that. There's also a movement to say, what can we do to make sure that what we're having kids take is something where they see value and application to their future and they're likely to learn better and learn more if they believe that."

Last month, the State Board received the recommendation for computer science from a group that examined policy in other states, met with math and science consultants and received public comment.

Computer science as core subject to be discussed by state board

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — TECH of Hutchinson will host its annual Uncorked for TECH event August 8th. The event is an annual fund raiser for the support service.

Participants will be able to stroll through the downtown area and sample upscale hors d’oeuvres and a variety of wines from all over the country. Local downtown businesses will be opening their doors to feature perfectly paired food and wine.

While the event is still a ways off, TECH is already looking for volunteers to help out. Nearly 100 volunteers are needed. Volunteers will work at a venue location from 5:45 p.m. – 9:15 p.m. the night of the event and all volunteers are required to attend a volunteer training meeting to familiarize yourselves with the wines prior to the event. You must be 21 to volunteer.

Tickets are $40 and go on sale Friday, July 9th at 9 a.m. Tickets may be purchased online or by calling 620-663-1596.&nbsp; All ticket holders for this event must be at least 21 years of age.&nbsp;

Proceeds benefit individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities served by TECH.&nbsp; Early ticket purchase is encouraged as they go quickly.

Volunteers needed for TECH event

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 and the HNEA will hold their third negotiation session for a new collective bargaining agreement for faculty on Tuesday.

In their last session the HNEA listed compensation and hours and amount of work performed including after school activities, lunch periods and meetings as part of their concerns. The union also wants to discuss a parental leave program and a veterans day honorarium.&nbsp; In addition, the union wants to discuss the definition of a classroom, which of course took on a whole new meaning during the pandemic.

The union is asking the district for information regarding salary placement, sick leave information, the number of anticipated full-time employees for next year and the administration salary schedule.

The district also wants to discuss compensation and benefits for next year as well as how grievances are dealt with in the district. The district wants to add language that establishes clear procedures for handling member disciplinary issues and requirements to attend before and after school meetings.

The meeting&nbsp; will be at 4 p.m. at the Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy, 800 15th Circle. The negotiations session will be broadcast on Facebook Live from the district’s Facebook page. Except for caucus periods of the individual groups, the negotiations are open meetings.&nbsp;

HNEA and USD 308 in negotiations Tuesday

Kan. — The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) will host a free virtual Alzheimer’s educational conference for Kansas residents next week.

"Normally, we would be in the community," said Director of Communications Chris Schneider. "Because of the pandemic, we're going to do this virtually and it's going to be done on Tuesday, June 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m."

The conference, which is free and open to everyone, will allow participants to learn from, and ask questions of, health, caregiving and legal experts. To register, go to <a href="http://www.alzfdn.org/tour">www.alzfdn.org/tour</a>.

"We have Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of The Dr. Oz Show," Schneider said. "He's going to be a guest speaker and talk about his family’s personal experience with Alzheimer's disease. His mom, Suna was diagnosed in the fall of 2019. He, very courageously, shared that publicly, talked about the impact that it had on his family, some of the warning signs that they missed."

There will also be some Kansas-based speakers that attendees can follow up with.

"We're going to have Dr. Jeffrey Burns, who is the Co-Director of the University of Kansas Alzheimer's Disease Center," Schneider said.  "He's going to talk about the latest information on Alzheimer’s research, treatment and prevention. We're going to have an elder law attorney from KC Elder Law who is going to talk about different strategies that you can utilize to make sure you get the care you need and cover the mounting costs of long-term care without draining your own savings. Then, we're going to have a session on the connection between grief and Alzheimer's."

That session with Michelle Niedens, LSCSW, Director of the Cognitive Care Network at the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Center and Eric Sigler, LMSW, a Grief Support Specialist with Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care, will provide a brief analysis of grief and the common types of grief associated with Alzheimer's disease. They will explain how caregivers, while grieving, may interact with the individual to create healing bonds and wellness for the caretaker and for the individual with Alzheimer's.

Virtual conference next week for Alzheimer's caregivers, families

HAVEN, Kan. — The Haven City Council will go over several budget requests when it meets Monday.

The council will get budget requests from the library board, chief of police, and parks department. The council will also consider hiring Stephanie Pace as the new recreation director.&nbsp;

The council will hear a request from the Haven Chamber regarding a request to hold a biweekly farmers market. The market would be held at the Engweiler Park at the parking lot located at 5th and Salina streets.

Monday's meeting begins at 7 pm. at the Haven city offices.

Haven City Council meets Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— The future of the Reno County Rural Fire Districts could be better known when the Reno County Commission meets on Tuesday.

The board will be asked to look over several recommendations as to how the district will operate and under what leadership. The commission approved a fire study completed by 5 Bugle Training and Consulting. The study showed the strengths and weaknesses of the rural fire departments. It exposed several issues running from various administrative issues to inadequate facilities for new equipment. When some of the administrative issues weren’t being addressed, the county hired 5 Bugle for the study.

On Tuesday, the board will be aksed to approve one of three recommendations. The one alternative being brought to the commission would have the county hire a full-time fire service professional to work with the rural fire chiefs and make necessary improvements.

Two other alternatives are to hire a full-time fire chief to oversee all of the fire districts or simply maintain the current operations and continue to try to improve them.

Tuesday’s meeting of the Reno County Commission begins at 9 a.m. at the Reno County Annex.

Fire districts to be discussed by commission Tuesday

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Not even seven minutes had elapsed in the national championship game before No. 1 Hutchinson Community College found itself in a 14-0 hole.

The Dragons went three-and-out on their first two possessions while No. 2 Snow College scored two touchdowns in just nine plays.

Deuce Roberson's 8-yard grab capped an 8-play, 52-yard drive to open the scoring for the Badgers.

On Snow's second possession, Tejhuan Palmer caught a Garrison Beach deep ball for six. The 69-yard TD put Snow up 14-0 with 8:17 left in the first quarter of play.

Hutchinson would answer with an 11-play, 66-yard drive that produced only a 22-yard field goal from C.J. Moya. Hutchinson's drive stalled after a first-and-goal chance from the five.

After turning the ball over on downs, Hutchinson took its next drive to the house in only two plays. Tye Edwards broke loose for a 68-yard scamper.

Edwards finished the day with 139 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Edwards was named the game's MVP.

After trailing 14-0 early, Hutchinson went into halftime down only four.

"I know a lot of it was just fighting back and these guys just not giving up and having a little 'come to Jesus' meeting at halftime about just playing Hutch Football," head coach Drew Dallas said after the game.

Named the NJCAA Coach of the Year, Dallas said the coaches didn't have to say anything at halftime. He said the leaders on the team said what needed to be said.

"The only thing you can control is your attitude and your effort and your response to the situation. We were prepared (because of the) adversity we faced the last 16, 17 months," Dallas said.

Snow took the opening kickoff of the third quarter and looked poised to add another touchdown to its 14-10 advantage. Quarterback Garrison Beach burst into the red zone before being tackled from behind by Marquise Gilbert.

Snow added to its lead late in the third quarter after a Dylan Laible interception. Laible, who threw for 11 TDs and just one interception after replacing an injured C.J. Ogbonna this year, went 10 of 22 for 150 yards and an interception.

Laible overthrew Tyrone Howell and Kieonte Scott took advantage with a pick. Mekhi Kimble turned the interception into points on an 11-yard TD run. With 4:50 left in the third, Hutchinson was down 21-10.

That's when Drew Dallas made a move. At halftime, he told both of his quarterbacks that a change might be coming. "If we need a little bit of momentum, we're going to make this change and really not for anything other than our offense just (needs) a spark," Dallas told Laible and C.J. Ogbonna during the break.

Ogbonna came in and completed his first pass for 34 yards to Cortez Braham. Two plays later, Anwar Lewis ran 29 yards for a touchdown.

Lewis scored twice Saturday, his second touchdown was from three yards out. The run capped an 89-yard drive that took just six plays.

Two touchdowns from Lewis and one more from Edwards were part of a 19-0 run that put Hutchinson up 29-21 with 7:27 remaining. The Dragons failed to convert twice on two-point conversions during that run.

Ogbonna provided the spark the Blue Dragons needed by completing all five of his passes for 128 yards.

Between Laible and Ogbonna, the Dragons racked up 278 passing yards. Tyrone Howell caught six passes for 108 yards. Braham tallied 112 yards on four receptions.

Snow would not go away without a fight. The Badgers scored with 4:50 left in the game on a Sweeten 6-yard run. The Badgers drove 75 yards in six plays but failed to tie the game when Sweeten couldn't hit Palmer on the two-point try.

With a two-point lead, Hutchinson took 2:37 off the clock before seemingly sealing the victory on a fourth down punt fake. Dylan Kedzior took a direct snap in punt formation and ran for the first down. The play was called back for an illegal formation. Caleb Brickhouse pinned the Badgers inside their own 20 after the penalty.

Without any timeouts, Snow had to throw. Enter: Tre Pinkney. The nation's leader in sacks knew the comeback route was coming from wide receiver Myller Royals. When Royals cut back to his quarterback, Pinkney jumped the passing lane and sealed the victory.

HARVEY COUNTY —A Kansas man avoided injury just after 10:30a.m. Saturday while flying in Harvey County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Fisher Classic piloted by David Brett Hansen, 55, Wichita, was flying in the&nbsp; 1500 block of North Woodlawn just east of Newton Airport.

The airplane ran out fuel and landed in a field just short of Newton Airport. There were no injuries.

Kan. pilot avoids injury after small plane runs out of fuel

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As positive numbers trend downward in Reno County, the number of hospitalizations has also declined. That’s according to a report from the Reno County Health Department, who reported that, as of June 4, only two COVID-19 patients remained at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. No previously vaccinated individuals have been hospitalized in Reno County.&nbsp;

Many questions are being asked about summer travel. If you are considering a summer vacation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends delaying travel until you are fully vaccinated. Fully-vaccinated travelers do not need to get tested before leaving the United States, unless required by their destination, nor do they need to self-quarantine following international travel. If you have not been vaccinated, it is recommended you get tested 1-3 days before your trip, and 3-5 days after you return home. If you have NOT been vaccinated, it is also advised to self-quarantine for 7 days, or 10 days after travel if no testing is done. As of June 1, there were 15 active cases of COVID in the county.

The Reno County Health Department is still offering vaccination and is open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 6 p.m., and Wednesday 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 6 p.m. They will also be open until 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 12. The COVID-19 vaccine is FREE for any Reno County resident, age 12 and over, regardless of citizen status or insurance. No appointment is needed.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Higher fuel prices also mean higher prices for road materials such as tar and asphalt.&nbsp;

But for now, the city of Hutchinson is looking good when it comes to the annual street maintenance projects.

According to City Manager Jeff Cantrell, the city has already bid out projects for 2021 and those prices are locked in. Cantrell says the problems could start showing up when the city works on next year's budget as high fuel prices and street materials could eat into the Public Works budget.

The city does chip seal and other various types of street maintenance on an eight-year cycle along with crack sealing and general upkeep.

The city has budgeted about $2.7 million for street maintenance and crack sealing for 2021.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the help of a grant from the Hutchinson Community Foundation, the Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson is getting the chance to look into expansion.

The grant is being used for a feasibility study to see if the organization can and should build a second facility. Plans would be to use the building for the elementary-age students leaving the current Shadduck Park building for the older students.

“We want to see if it’s feasible to build at another location,” Skip Wilson said. “Our hopes are that we can, hopefully real close to Shadduck Park.”

Wilson not only sees the expansion as a positive for the organization, but for the area as well. Wilson says it is a chance to make the park a go-to place again.

“If you go back to the 1920s and 30s when you look at Hutchinson, the area where Shadduck Park is was quite a mecca within the community,” Wilson said. “There was a huge lake that was called Shadduck Lake right next to where Cow Creek runs through. On that lake they had a pavilion and they had a gazebo where bands would play.”

Wilson says it won't be like that but still wants to bring the area back to life. “What we’re hoping to do . . . is bring that neighborhood back to prominence again,” Wilson said. “And we think a building would be a nice start.”

Wilson says the organization will work with its national partners and others to see if such an expansion is possible and how they will fund such a building. The club says, once the study starts, it will take about four months to complete.

Boys and Girls Club to study possible expansion

EDWARDS COUNTY — One person was injured in an accident just before noon Friday in Edwards County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Dodge Durango driven by&nbsp; Lovena M. Woellhof, 33, Lakin, was eastbound on U.S. 50. fifteen miles west of Kinsley milemarker 154.5.

The Dodge traveled left of center into the westbound lanes and struck axle 2 on a westbound 2012 Peterbilt semi driven by Martin C. Fleming, 65, Pratt.&nbsp; The Dodge continued eastbound, rotated and come to rest on the shoulder of the westbound lanes facing westbound. 

A tire from the Dodge struck the drivers side door of a westbound 2009 Honda CRV driven by Sarah E. Jones, 21, Kansas City.

EMS transported Woellhof to the hospital in Kinsley. Fleming and Jones were not injured. All three were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Kansas woman hospitalized after 3-vehicle crash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If you're looking for a new cat or kitten, Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram may have the answer for you — while at the same time helping out an area shelter Saturday.

The event is called Cars and Cats to benefit the Joy Animal Rescue in Wichita.

“We’re going to have about 20 kittens and 10 adult cats under one year old,” Cris Schul, sales and marketing consultant for the dealership, said. “They’ll be there for adoption.”

Joy Animal Rescue is a no-kill shelter devoted entirely to cats. Schul says it was an easy decision to get involved in bringing the event to Hutchinson.

“We have done things before for animals,” Schul said. “But our business manager, Bret Bowman, and his wife, Jeri, spearheaded Joy Animal Rescue and they have a passion for felines. They asked us if we would do an adoption event and we said 'of course we would.'”

Schul says they want to be able to bring a new cat or kitten into a good home.

“We know that there’s a lot of people out there who are looking for a healthy pet,” Schul said. “They take very good care of these cats and kittens and do everything they need.”

Schul says they will also have ways to raise funds for the shelter and give you a chance to check out a new vehicle. If you take a test drive, Allen Samuels will donate $10 to the shelter. If you buy a new car or truck, the dealership will donate another $25.

Heartland Credit Union will have its popular ice cream wagon available along with pizza from Pizza Ranch. The event runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Sheriff's Department released its results from the latest Click It or Ticket campaign.

The department made a total of 174 stops and issued 164 seat belt citations. Deputies also issued citations for a registration violation, a citation for illegal transportation of liquor, and one drug case.

Click It or Ticket is conducted each spring to help bring awareness to seat belt usage and is funded through a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — First District Rep. Tracey Mann announced a new staff member on Friday. District Agriculture Rep. Sarah Henry will be working in the Big First District. Henry will be based out of the Manhattan District Office.

Henry will travel the district, meeting with agriculture stakeholders and producers. She has spent the last five and a half years advocating for agriculture in various roles both on and off Capitol Hill. Before joining Rep. Mann’s team, she worked for Rep. Adrian Smith, the House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, and most recently the National Corn Growers Association. She is a graduate of Iowa State University where she received a Bachelor of Science in agriculture education. Henry and her husband, Dalton, live on a farm north of Manhattan where they have a cow calf and hay operation.

Mann announces staff addition

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two area lakes are feeling the effects of blue-green algae very early this summer season. Both Marion County Lake and Marion Reservoir are under algae advisories.&nbsp;

Marion Lake is under a watch, which means you can do some water activities, but must use caution. Swimming and water skiing are discouraged. The reservoir is under a warning, which means all contact with the water should be avoided. All livestock and pets should be kept away from the water.

Visitors may fish at the lakes, but only the fillet portion should be consumed. The KDHE issues the algae advisories every Thursday during the summer months.

RSP has been doing a district and facilities study over the past several months to determine what direction the district could go in the future. Such studies have been conducted in the past. One led to an $85 million bond issue that made major improvements to the district's facilities. Another more recent one led to an overhaul of the district's elementary school boundaries.

The district is strongly urging patrons to either attend the meeting on Monday at the Hutch C-TEA at 800 15th Circle, or watch via the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/USD308">district's Facebook page</a>.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Amtrak announced Thursday the restoration of traditional dining service beginning Wednesday, June 23, on its western long-distance routes including the Southwest Chief. Amtrak had suspended the service because of COVID-19.

The passenger carrier also says riders will see a revamped menu and service. This includes selections for children, a new array of appetizers and a complimentary alcoholic drink with dinner and table service offered in the Dining Car. It includes new glassware, cutlery and white linen tablecloths. Ceramic dishware is set to debut later this year. The railroad had moved away from such dinnerware in favor of disposable items over the past several years. 

Amtrak restored daily service to the Southwest Chief June 1 after reducing the schedule to three days per week during the pandemic.

The Central Kansas Model Railroad Club of Hutchinson is hosting the Center of the Nation Model Railroad Expo this weekend. The event will be at the Pride of Kansas building on the fairgrounds. More than 100 vendor tables will be on-hand along with several working layouts that will let you see how model railroading works, or give you ideas on how to improve your own layout.

The show runs Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Admission is $7 and children under 12 are free with an adult.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community Foundation recently awarded $32,900 to two nonprofit organizations in the second round of its 2021 Fund for Hutchinson grant cycle.

Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson Inc. received $3,000. The organization is exploring building a second, permanent facility to house elementary-age programming. Requested funds will cover the cost of a feasibility study.

Prairie Independent Living Resource Center will get $29,900 to increase capacity through clear communications and higher visibility in the community. This grant will allow PILR to rebrand its organization and refresh its marketing approach and web presence.

Hutchinson Community Foundation’s mission is to inspire philanthropy, collaboration and innovative leadership to strengthen Reno County communities. Since 1989, the foundation has granted more than $86 million to organizations.

Established in 1990, the Fund for Hutchinson serves as a permanent resource for the changing needs of Reno County. Grants represent an innovative approach or collaboration, a new efficiency, a critical need that requires funding or an opportunity that needs a bit of local support to leverage resources for the community.

Proposals for the grants are accepted year-round, with awards decided in March, May, July, September and November.

HCF announces grant recipients 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce held its kickoff event for the Reno Rising campaign.

The event was held to look back at the last four years of growth in the county and kick off a new five-year plan to increase that growth.&nbsp;

“We reflected back on how our economic performance has been over the last four and a half years,” Chamber President Debra Teufel said. “Then forecasting ahead of what we expect to be in our strategic plan.”

Teufel says one of the more noticeable numbers they’ve seen over the past four years is the number of available workers in the county. But there is still work to be done on that front.

“In 2017, there were about 27,000 people employed in Reno County and today we have about 26,800,” Teufel said. “We recognize that right now we're back to pre-pandemic unemployment levels, which are around 3%, and there’s a lot of pressure on existing employers.”&nbsp;

Teufel says it's also about making sure there is enough talent to fill those jobs in the area. Looking ahead to the next five years can be reflected on some of the past successes the county has experienced during the last Reno Rising campaign.

“If you look at the jobs we’ve created over the past four years, 1,600 good new jobs in the community and, as a result, $20 million in new payroll and new projects,” Teufel said. “American Packaging and First Team that are undergoing expansion, and today Superior Boiler is bringing&nbsp; their Richmond facility here to Hutch.”

A report from the Chamber presented during the kickoff shows that, since the campaign started, the annual median wage in the county has increased from $29,449 in 2017 to $33,310 in 2020 and hourly wages have increased.

The campaign is a fund drive for the Chamber to help fund local efforts to bring more business and industry to the area.&nbsp;

Reno Rising campaign kicked off Thursday morning

RICE COUNTY—Authorities investigating a fatal home explosion and fire&nbsp; in Lyons have identified the victim as 65-year-old Terry Sawyers, according to Fire Chief Brad Reid.

Just after 11:30p.m. May 27, firefighters responded to the home in the 300 Block of Meadowlark Drive.&nbsp;&nbsp;Upon arrival crews were able to control the fire but not able to enter the home.  Firefighters later located Sawyers who died from injuries.

Insurance company officials were at the home on Thursday morning, according to Reid.&nbsp; Officials also have had a difficult time locating relatives.&nbsp;There was nothing criminal involved in the incident, according to Lyons Police Sgt. Cory Ryan.&nbsp; Results of an autopsy are expected in July.-------
