HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sales tax revenue fell dramatically in the month of August when compared to the same month last year.
According to numbers released from the treasurer's office August revenue totaled $403,328 compared with $458,663 in 2020. A difference of more than $54,000. It's the first time in 14 months that the sales tax revenue did not surpass the previous year.
The drop can be attributed to a slow down in home projects that was brought on by the pandemic. Home improvement shopping hit an all time high last summer as home bound people wanted to make their homes more confortable.
The last time tax revenue did not keep pace with the previous year was May of 2020. Tax revenue for August reflects shopping trends for the month of June.
