The Kansas State Fair has released updated information on parking and shuttle services as the Fair heads into its final weekend.

Parking Lots
Fair officials confirmed Friday evening that Lots A and B on State Fair Road remain open and will stay available through Sunday under normal traffic patterns. Lot C on Plum Street will reopen to the public at 7:00 a.m. Saturday, September 13, but with limited availability. The lot will continue to provide space for Will Call, handicapped, and Media/VIP parking.

Shuttle Service
Visitors should note that no parking will be available at the Hutchinson Sports Arena this weekend. Shuttles will instead operate from two locations: •&nbsp;&nbsp;Bold 3PL, east parking lot at 1529 E. 17th Avenue •&nbsp;&nbsp;Hutchinson Uptown Mall, southwest corner south of Hutchinson Vintage Market

Shuttle buses will run from 7:30 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, with the last departures from the Fairgrounds at 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 8:00 p.m. Sunday. Drop-off will be at Gate 8, with pick-up at Gate 9.

Handicapped Parking
Accessible parking is available near Gate 5 (State Fair Road), Gate 8 (23rd &amp; Plum Street), and Gate 9 (Plum Street). Vehicles must display a valid placard.

State Fair releases parking plans for final weekend 

KINGMAN COUNTY&nbsp;– The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Kingman County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of a woman in Spivey, Kansas.

On Friday, Sept. 5, around 9:10 p.m., emergency medical services (EMS) were called to a residence in Spivey, according to a media release from the KBI.

The caller, identified as Linda Oeding, 70, requested EMS transport her mother, Betty Oeding, 94, to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for medical care. 

When EMS arrived, they observed Betty was experiencing malnourishment and improper living conditions, and recommended she be transported to a nearby hospital. Linda declined and insisted her mother be transported to Hutchinson.

Betty was admitted into the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, and on Monday she was moved to hospice care. On Wednesday, Sept. 10, around 11:15 a.m., Betty died in hospice care. The Kingman County Sheriff’s Office was called at 4:53 p.m. to investigate and observed signs of neglect.

On Sept. 11, at approximately 11:05 a.m., the Kingman County Sheriff’s Office requested KBI’s assistance with the investigation.

On Friday, Sept. 12, at 10:41 a.m., Linda Oeding was arrested and booked into the Kingman County Sheriff’s Office Jail on requested charges of first-degree murder, mistreatment of a dependent adult/elder person, abuse and neglect, and interfering with medical care. Formal charges are pending.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation is ongoing. Nothing further will be released at this time.

Gov. directs flags be flown at half-staff in remembrance of victims of political violence

The annual First Responder Holiday Helpers drive has begun, seeking financial donations as it strives to assist 400 Harvey County families in need in the upcoming holiday season.

The initiative, led by the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office and Newton Police Department, is a partnership between all the emergency response agencies of Harvey County.

“All of our local first responders work well together, and this is an opportunity for all of us to give back to our community in a different way,” said Harvey County Sheriff Chad Gay. “First Responder Holiday Helpers is a great project because we get to give folks a helping hand and see all of their smiles when we deliver food boxes.”

First Responder Holiday Helpers gathers financial contributions from the community in the months leading up to Christmas. Those funds are used to purchase food items through Dillons, which contributes a 10% match of its own.

In December, emergency responders will visit the Dillons Distribution Center to box food donations. The boxes of food are dispersed throughout the community to families that could use a boost over the holidays.

The program has provided food donations to nearly 2,000 families since its inception.

“The generosity of our local businesses and residents over many years has just been incredible. We could not do this every year without their support,” Gay said.

Financial donations can be delivered or mailed to the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office or Newton Police Department, co-located at 120 E. Seventh St. in Newton. Checks can be made payable to First Responder Holiday Helpers.

Holiday Helpers drive begins in Harvey County 

President Donald Trump&nbsp;has granted&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly’s&nbsp;request for a federal disaster declaration for the state due to damages caused by severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding during the period of June 3-7, 2025, according to a media release from governor's office.

Due to severe storms and flooding multiple counties sustained damage to utility infrastructure, roads, and bridges.

“These federal funds will go a long way in supporting the restoration work by those in counties impacted by the storms”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly&nbsp;said.

The declaration allows state and local levels of government, as well as certain private nonprofit organizations that provide vital and essential services, such as rural electric cooperatives, to apply for Public Assistance funds for emergency and permanent work for the repair or replacement of infrastructure damaged by the disaster.

Counties named in the declaration are Barber, Butler, Chase, Coffey, Cowley, Franklin, Greenwood, Harper, Hodgeman, Kingman, Lyon, Morris, Osage, Stanton, Sumner, and Wallace.

HUTCHINSON — Fire crews were dispatched Thursday to the 600 block of East Avenue A after a report of a structure fire.

According to the Hutchinson Fire Department, first-arriving units entered the two-story home and encountered light smoke on the second floor and moderate smoke in the attic. Firefighters quickly located and extinguished a small fire in the floor of the second story.

The residence was occupied by one adult and two children at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported.

Officials said the home sustained minimal damage and remains habitable. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

 In 1902, Hays, Kansas, was a vibrant yet rugged railroad and military outpost in the heart of the sprawling High Plains. The town offered opportunity and challenge, attracting a colorful mix of characters—from hardworking pioneers and recent immigrants seeking a fresh start to those with less honorable intentions. To thrive in such an environment required more than mere survival; it demanded an adventurous spirit, an ability to adapt, and heaps of determination. 

As Fort Hays State University (FHSU) opened its doors within the confines of a former military hospital on the grounds of the historic Fort Hays, it became a place where that very spirit flourished, shaping a community that continues to resonate with the same tenacity that built it.&nbsp;

Associate Professor of Teacher Education Matt Clay is at the forefront of this endeavor, a living testament to the adventurous spirit that defines FHSU. 

Raised in the rural town of Clearwater, situated southwest of Wichita, Matt spent his childhood outdoors, soaking up the beauty of nature while engrossed in tales of adventure. Books detailing the exploits of figures like Teddy Roosevelt and Sir Edmund Hillary inspired him. They instilled in him a lifelong passion for exploration—one he would carry into his career as he prepared the next generation of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) educators.&nbsp;

Matt began his academic journey at Pittsburg State University, earning a bachelor of science in education, focusing on biology. He continued his studies at Montana State University, earning a master’s in science education before completing his doctorate at the University of Northern Colorado. Alongside his academic pursuits, he gained invaluable experience as an educator in public and private schools throughout rural Kansas.&nbsp;

Since he arrived at FHSU, Matt has creatively infused his classroom with his love for the outdoors and adventure. He regularly led students on expeditions to the breathtaking Rocky Mountains and introduced them to the intricate art of using 360-degree landscape cameras to capture stunning vistas from heights exceeding 13,000 feet. The visuals they captured were transformed into teaching resources that now extend educational experiences to K-12 teachers and students around the globe.&nbsp;

With an undying curiosity driving him, Matt envisioned aligning his work with the established narratives of exploration he admired so much during his youth. 

Thus, he contacted the president of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the New York City-based Explorers Club—a premier organization devoted to supporting scientific expeditions across varied disciplines. Known for its illustrious members, including Arctic pioneers Robert Peary and Roald Amundsen, astronauts like Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, and zoologist Jane Goodall, the club has long been a beacon for individuals passionate about discovery.&nbsp;

“I wasn’t sure if my work would even qualify for membership,” Matt confessed. “However, I felt compelled to give it a shot, even just to deepen my understanding of what being a member meant.” To his astonishment, his application was accepted in June, allowing him to become part of a legacy that typically includes those in hard science fields. “I was amazed,” he admitted. “This was a world I’d only dreamed of entering.”&nbsp;

Since joining this esteemed organization, Matt has gained more than just a membership card; he has tapped into a treasure trove of resources and connections in exploration. 

He met a botanist who has conducted groundbreaking fieldwork in the Himalayas—a dream location for Matt, who aspires to photograph its grandeur with his landscape camera. Additionally, access to valuable insights, like strategies for maintaining equipment in frigid conditions, has enriched his craft and field operations.&nbsp;

Emboldened by his connection to the Explorers Club, Matt envisions personal growth and avenues for his students to engage in exploration. “There are numerous private and corporate donors that could support the efforts of club members,” he explained. “While such funding rarely supports university work, opportunities arise if one isn't afraid to ask.”&nbsp;

His wife, Krysten, initially raised an eyebrow when he shared the news of his acceptance. “She wondered how I could benefit from a club I’d rarely visit,” he laughed, recounting his attempts to convince her. “I pointed out that the club’s location, just two miles from Broadway in Manhattan, might offer its own adventures!”&nbsp;

Matt Clay epitomizes the ethos of our Tiger Teacher Nation at FHSU. He doesn’t merely teach future educators; he embodies the passion for discovery that inspires them. 

Alongside his wife and three children, he dedicates his time to exploratory missions throughout Kansas and the Rocky Mountains, braving snowstorms, extreme cold, and wildfire threats alongside his intrepid students. Enrollment hits all-time high at Central Christian College of Kansas

The Reno County Commission on Wednesday approved the county’s 2026 budget along with budgets for the county’s special districts, following a lengthy public hearing that included input from residents and agencies that receive county funds.

Commissioners briefly debated whether to table final approval in order to review certain line items but ultimately voted to adopt the budget as presented.

The 2026 county budget totals just under $90 million, with ad valorem taxes making up just over $29 million. The mill levy is set at 37.767 mills, which equates to $434.32&nbsp;in property tax for every $100,000 of appraised property value.

In addition to the county budget, commissioners also approved the special districts’ 2026 budgets.

On the consent agenda, the board approved:

A construction contract with MBC Construction for the new EMS station just west of 5th and Adams.

An $880,280 bid from Wycoff Construction of St. John for a four-inch water line connection between the City of Hutchinson and Yoder Water District 101. Commissioner Randy Parks noted that a most of these funds will be reimbursed through grants from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.&nbsp;

They also adopted a new policy for the Reno County Parks and Recreation Fund.&nbsp;

The next Reno County Commission meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 24.

MCPHERSON — After two major summer floods left the Roundhouse gym floor damaged, USD 418 is moving forward with a plan to address both the immediate repairs and long-term flood protection for the facility.

The flooding in June and July was caused by what engineers have called rare and extraordinary storm events. The June 18 storm was classified as a 200-year flood, followed in July by back-to-back 100-year and 50-year events. Despite concerns from some in the community, engineers confirmed that the new athletic track and field, completed in 2022, did not contribute to the flooding. In fact, they found it may help slow water before it reaches the floodway.

To better prepare for the future, USD 418 partnered with inCite Design Studios (iDS) and Kaw Valley Civil Engineering to study the Bull Creek and McPherson Dry Turkey Creek watersheds. Their recommendations include expanding the detention pond to hold more stormwater, testing and upgrading the pond’s pump system, raising doorways, and adding temporary barriers until more permanent work can be done.

The Board of Education has taken a step-by-step approach since the flooding began. In July, it initially approved replacing the gym floor but later paused the project to hear from engineers. At a special meeting earlier this month, engineers presented their findings and outlined a series of mitigation steps.

The Board will revisit the issue at its next regular meeting on Monday, September 15, where members are expected to decide how to proceed with both the flood control measures and the replacement of the gym floor.

District officials emphasized that staff vigilance has kept the Roundhouse dry during subsequent rains and that they remain committed to ensuring the facility is protected against future flooding.

USD 418 weighs flood mitigation and Roundhouse gym floor replacement

Hutchinson, KS – August 2025&nbsp;– The Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson is proud to announce the launch of&nbsp;Transfr VR, an innovative virtual reality career exploration program, at Hutchinson Middle School 7 (HMS-7). Led by Tabetha Gray, FACS teacher and Director of Program Excellence at the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson, the program immerses middle school students in realistic simulations of careers—helping them discover their strengths, explore possibilities, and make informed decisions about high school courses and potential future career paths.

Exploring Careers at the Perfect AgeMiddle school is a critical time for career exploration. By 8th grade, Kansas students complete an Individual Plan of Study (IPS) to guide high school coursework and career planning—a process that can feel overwhelming.&nbsp;Transfr VR&nbsp;provides hands-on, interactive experiences in skilled trades, healthcare, agriculture, cosmetology, and more, giving students a glimpse into local job opportunities and the skills required to succeed.

“Students are excited to explore careers using virtual reality,”&nbsp;said Ms. Gray.&nbsp;“The technology allows them to see in-demand jobs and potential salaries. Careers like correctional officers come up a lot, and students are curious to see what that entails. The&nbsp;VR&nbsp;experience is tailored to meet the demands of our local workforce.”

Student VoicesMia H., a participating HMS-7 student, shared:&nbsp;“I tried the medical field and realized it wasn’t for me... I do NOT like blood. Agriculture wasn’t my thing either, but I really liked cosmetology and can’t wait to try it again. I just wish the simulators lasted a little longer!”

Community &amp; Workforce ImpactTransfr VR&nbsp;is part of the&nbsp;Youth Career Discovery Partnership, a first-of-its-kind statewide collaboration with FFA, 4-H, Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG), Hutchinson YMCA, and Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson. With legislative support, Kansas has allocated $320,000 in year one to pilot the program, supplemented by $160,000 in private matching funds from organizations including the Kansas Health Foundation, Kansas Farm Bureau, and Kansas Corn Growers Association.

“Transfr VR&nbsp;gives students a clear vision of what different careers actually look like,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;Nathan Henry, Principal of HMS-7.&nbsp;“It’s an incredible way for them to explore their interests and make informed decisions. Programs like this reinforce what they learn in life skills classes, helping students discover their strengths and pair them with potential future paths. The kids are highly engaged, and the hands-on experience makes abstract concepts come to life.”

“By exploring careers early, our students can better tailor high school courses to their interests and strengths,”&nbsp;added&nbsp;Nick Caton, Teen Site Director at BGC.&nbsp;“This program removes barriers like cost or seat availability and provides hands-on experience that prepares kids for real-life careers. It’s a huge asset to our youth and our community’s future workforce.”

Expanding OpportunitiesCurrently,&nbsp;Transfr VR&nbsp;serves 12 students at a time at HMS-7 and the Boys &amp; Girls Club. The program will expand throughout the year to accommodate more students and career pathways, ensuring multiple opportunities for hands-on learning.&nbsp;Joyce Glasscock, Executive Director of the Kansas Boys &amp; Girls Clubs Alliance, spearheaded the fundraising efforts for this innovative project.

By 8th grade, Kansas students complete an Individual Plan of Study (IPS) to guide high school coursework and career planning—a process that can feel overwhelming.&nbsp;Transfr VR&nbsp;provides hands-on, interactive experiences in skilled trades, healthcare, agriculture, cosmetology, and more, giving students a glimpse into local job opportunities and the skills required to succeed.<figure>

Careers like correctional officers come up a lot, and students are curious to see what that entails. I do NOT like blood. Agriculture wasn’t my thing either, but I really liked cosmetology and can’t wait to try it again. I just wish the simulators lasted a little longer!”Community &amp; Workforce ImpactTransfr VR&nbsp;is part of the&nbsp;Youth Career Discovery Partnership, a first-of-its-kind statewide collaboration with FFA, 4-H, Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG), Hutchinson YMCA, and Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson. With legislative support, Kansas has allocated $320,000 in year one to pilot the program, supplemented by $160,000 in private matching funds from organizations including the Kansas Health Foundation, Kansas Farm Bureau, and Kansas Corn Growers Association.“Transfr VR&nbsp;gives students a clear vision of what different careers actually look like,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;Nathan Henry, Principal of HMS-7.&nbsp;“It’s an incredible way for them to explore their interests and make informed decisions. Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of East 2nd Avenue and North Poplar.

In 1901, brothers C.N. &amp; K.E. Sentney moved to Hutchinson from Indiana and started a grocery store at 109-115 S. Main.

Business went so well that, in 1904, they built a three-story, 40,000-square-foot building at 126 E. 2nd.

On Jan. 1, 1909, they incorporated as the Sentney Wholesale Grocery Co. The first photo shows their horse-drawn delivery wagon about 1908.

The second photo shows the company's transition to gas trucks in 1912.

The third photo shows the business corner in 1929.

About 1940, the Sentney branding was sold off to Pioneer Foods.

In 1944, the building became the Western Foods, Western Canning Co., an offshoot of the Vinegar Works just north of the railroad tracks. The fourth photo shows the building in that transition period.

The fifth photo shows the Western Foods building in 1963.

They were active there until the early 1970s.

The building has housed many businesses since. Many of you might remember when it was the "Purple Pickle" private club in 1993.

In 2008, it was remodeled into apartments. The sixth photo shows the 126 E. 2nd building today known as the "Sentney Lofts." The building is currently owned by the Sentney Re Holdings L.L.C. of Denver, Colorado.

WHAT TAX CHANGES ARE IN THE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL?

The One Big Beautiful Bill, signed into law on July 4, 2025, brings with it a sweeping package of tax changes and budget measures that will have a broad impact on individuals, families and businesses. The legislation makes permanent several provisions from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), while introducing new incentives for workers and business owners. 

As taxpayers try to make sense of what’s changed, many are asking practical questions:&nbsp;Will I pay less in taxes? What do the changes mean for my retirement or business planning? And how long will these provisions last?&nbsp;

One of the most notable elements of the bill is the extension and, in some cases, expansion of tax cuts for individuals and small businesses. The lower individual tax rates enacted under the TCJA, which were originally set to expire in 2025, have now been made permanent. This offers continued relief for middle-income earners and provides more predictability for long-term financial planning. The standard deduction remains high, reducing the number of people who itemize and simplifying tax filings for millions of Americans.&nbsp;

For business owners, this bill offers more than tax simplification. It creates actionable planning opportunities across multiple areas: entity structuring, equipment investment,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.adamsbrownwc.com/services/retirement-plans/">retirement planning</a>&nbsp;and even employee compensation strategies.

FOR BUSINESSES: KEY TAX BREAKS &amp; COMPLIANCE CHANGES

Bigger Tax Incentives for Investment and Expansion

The bill introduces or expands several provisions aimed at encouraging capital investment, manufacturing and innovation:&nbsp;

100% Bonus Depreciation Made Permanent. Now retroactive to qualifying property purchased or placed in service on or after Jan. 19, 2025. Section 179 Expensing Limit Increased. Businesses can now deduct up to $2.5 million in qualifying property (up from $1.16 million limit 2023 level). The deduction begins to phase out at $4 million in asset cost. New Deduction for Qualifying Production Property. Allows 100% expensing of structures used in manufacturing. Applies to construction that begins between Jan. 19, 2025, and Jan. 19, 2029, if placed in service before Jan. 1, 2031. R&amp;D Expensing Restored for Small Businesses.&nbsp; <a href="https://www.adamsbrowncpa.com/blog/expanding-rd-tax-credits-kansas/">Domestic R&amp;D </a>costs&nbsp;can now be expensed immediately for businesses with gross receipts under $31 million. These businesses may also retroactively deduct expenses from tax years beginning after Dec. 31, 2021. Businesses with average gross receipts under $31 million can begin expensing these costs in 2025. Also, large business taxpayers with R&amp;D expenses after 2021 and before 2025 may deduct remaining expenses over a one- or two- year period, beginning in 2025. Advanced Manufacturing Credit. Increases from 25% to 35%, incentivizing U.S.-based production facilities.&nbsp; Paid Family and Medical Leave Credit. Made permanent, providing continued support for employers offering leave benefits. Qualified Small Business Stock (Sec. 1202) Exclusion Expanded.&nbsp; For stock acquired after enactment, gain exclusions increase: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;50% if held for three years &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;75% if held for four years &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;100% if held for five years or more Opportunity Zones and New Markets Tax Credit. Both made permanent to support community investment.&nbsp; Farmland Sale Deferral (Sec. 1062). Tax from farmland sales to a qualified farmer can now be paid in four annual installments. Interest Exclusion for Ag Loans. Allows a 25% exclusion of interest received on loans secured by agricultural land. The borrower’s deduction is reduced proportionally. Percentage of Completion Exception. Certain residential construction contracts are now exempt from this revenue recognition method, helping small builders manage taxable income timing. EBITDA-Based Limitation on Business Interest Deduction Reinstated (IRC Sec. 163(j)). The bill permanently reinstates the EBITDA-based (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) formula for calculating the business interest expense limitation. This replaces the more restrictive EBIT-based standard that had been phased in. This change provides broader deductibility for leveraged businesses. Modifications to the Excess Business Loss Limitation. The legislation also includes technical and structural changes to the excess business loss calculation, offering additional clarity and predictability in tax planning for pass-through owners and investors. QBI Deduction Expanded. The 20% deduction is now permanent and adds a $400 minimum deduction for taxpayers with at least $1,000 in qualified business income from active participation.

WORKFORCE &amp; CHILDCARE INCENTIVES

Employer Childcare Credit Increased Rises from 25% to 40%, up to $600,000 annually—encouraging more employers to offer on-site or subsidized childcare solutions.&nbsp;

REPORTING &amp; COMPLIANCE CHANGES&nbsp;

1099-K Threshold Restored Returns to the previous $20,000 and 200 transaction threshold, reducing the burden on casual sellers and small e-commerce businesses.&nbsp; 1099-NEC/MISC Threshold Increased Starting in 2026, reporting is only required for non-employee payments of $2,000 or more (indexed for inflation). This change may reduce the number of 1099s businesses must issue. ERC Compliance Tightened The Employee Retention Credit program now includes stricter claim deadlines and new penalties for non-compliance.&nbsp; New 1% Remittance Transfer Tax Applies to certain outbound cash transfers, such as money orders or cashier’s checks. Withdrawals from bank accounts or credit cards are excluded.&nbsp; SSN Requirements for Education Credits Taxpayers must provide a valid SSN to claim the American Opportunity or Lifetime Learning Credits.

CLEAN ENERGY TAX CREDIT PHASE-OUT&nbsp;

Most Clean Energy Credits Sunset by 2026–2028 This includes credits for electric vehicles, solar panel installations and home energy upgrades.&nbsp; Clean Fuel Production Credit (45Z) Extended through 2029, maintaining incentives for low-carbon fuel producers.&nbsp;

FOR INDIVIDUALS: LOWER RATES AND NEW DEDUCTIONS

TAX RATES AND DEDUCTIONS Permanent Lower Tax Brackets The TCJA's individual tax brackets are now permanent. Annual adjustments for inflation will continue.&nbsp; Higher Standard Deductions for 2025 &nbsp; &nbsp; $15,750 – Single &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;$23,625 – Head of Household&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;$31,500 – Married Filing Jointly SALT Deduction Cap Temporarily Increased The state and local tax deduction cap is raised to $40,000 for 2025, increasing by 1% annually through 2029. A phaseout begins for incomes over $500,000. Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) Exemption Increased Now permanently set at $500,000 for single filers and $1 million for joint returns, indexed for inflation.&nbsp;

Child Tax Credit Increased to $2,200 per child in 2025. The refundable portion of $1,400 is now permanent.&nbsp; Child &amp; Dependent Care Credit Rises to 50% of eligible expenses. Adoption Credit Now up to $5,000 and fully refundable. Dependent Care Assistance Exclusion from income raised from $5,000 to $7,500.
