BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler City Council has voted to terminate the employment of former Police Chief Darrin Banning, effective immediately, according to a statement released by the city.
The council also announced that Officer John Brislin has been appointed as the new chief of police and will lead the department moving forward. City officials said police services will continue without interruption.
In the statement, council members emphasized that the decision followed due process and careful consideration.
“This was not a decision the Council made lightly,” the statement said. “The governing body takes its responsibility to the residents of Buhler seriously, and when information came to light that warranted action, the Council acted swiftly, thoroughly, and in accordance with City policy — including providing the former Chief an opportunity to be heard.”
City officials acknowledged that the personnel change is likely to raise questions among residents but said they are currently unable to release additional information.
The council cited ongoing administrative and regulatory processes as the reason for limiting public comment at this time. Officials indicated they expect to be able to share more details in the near future.
The statement did not specify the circumstances that led to the termination.
The City Council thanked residents for their patience and continued trust, stating that it remains committed to operating with integrity, accountability, and in the best interests of the community.
Brislin assumes leadership of the department immediately as the city continues normal law enforcement operations.
