HAVEN, Kan. — The Haven City Council will get an update on the legal matter involving the city pool when they meet in regular session this evening.&nbsp;

The pool has been closed for more than two years after renovations to the facility did not repair problems with the pool. Since then the city and the contractor have been tied up in a civil case.&nbsp;

Also this evening, the council will go over a request for $2,000 for the Haven Fall Festival and go over a housing incentive program and a resolution seeking a grant to help fund that incentive.

Tonight's Haven City Council meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Haven city offices at 120 S. Kansas Avenue.&nbsp;

The past couple of weeks I had the privilege of attending several Farm Bureau events in person — Big Tent Reunions, Summer Summit and Young Farmers and Ranchers Leaders Conference — without masks, and it was awesome. This isn’t a statement about restrictions, masks or vaccinations, it is a statement of how much we all need social interaction and how valuable relationships are. The whole time we were staying at home, I knew I was missing people. I just didn’t realize how much.

I don’t know how many times in the last two weeks I commented on the fact I couldn’t remember the last time I saw whomever I was talking to. In many cases it was prior to March 2020. That is a long time to not see friends, and I truly believe that took as much of a toll as the virus itself.

Except for a very few of us, we humans are social beings and to not be able to do so really hurts our mental wellbeing. I saw it in conversations I participated in and those I overheard. Often, they would start with the usual topics like “How much rain are you getting?” or “How do the crops look?” and then evolve from there. Many times, what started out as a fairly routine conversation would lead to much deeper topics.

It makes sense, for almost a year and a half we have really only talked to our spouses, kids and close family, and they didn’t need to be told because they were there living it like we were. Here we are with 16, 17 months of pent-up joys, disasters, concerns and observations and no one to share them with. Let’s face it, it is one thing to vent to your wife and kids, but it is far more therapeutic to find sympathy and empathy from a peer.

I guess that is why it was so good to attend the Big Tent Reunions I did. It was cathartic to see old friends, to share the life happenings and to find out what was going on in their lives, too. I guess I have come to realize that one of the best benefits to Farm Bureau is the friends you develop because of your involvement.

I hope everyone else got as much out of the meetings and events we have recently hosted. Don’t get me wrong, the education, advocacy and service are all things our organization is built on and represent the good and important work we do. However, at the end of the day it is the relationships and friendships we gain with fellow farmers and ranchers that make it all worthwhile. I tell young farmers and ranchers on their way to their first YF&amp;R Conference that the most important thing you learn is you are not alone, and there are people going through the same things you are. I believe that to be true and something that does not change with age.

The last 18 months may have limited our interactions, but I am grateful for these recent gatherings and looking forward to catching up with everyone again soon. Let’s all do our part to stay safe and ensure we can see each other in person at Kansas Farm Bureau’s annual meeting in December.

Five of the ten finalists to win a car from Mel Hambleton Ford and Hospice and Homecare of Reno County were drawn on Facebook Live Monday morning outside Scooter's Coffee.

"Our finalists were Katie Flora, Louise Hook, Sausha Friesen, Paul Mesh and Mary Mesh," said Andrea Siefkes with Hospice and Homecare of Reno County. "They will each get a key to try to see if they can win the car."

The other five finalists will get their keys at the Festival of Remembrance Friday night at Prairie Dunes.

Finalists drawn for Hospice and MH Ford car giveaway

Reno County Administrator Randy Partington said Monday that it is the intent of the Board of Reno County Commissioners to finish off the wind farm regulations discussion next month.

"In talking with a couple of the commissioners separate from the meeting, I believe that Commissioner Friesen might be making a motion coming up soon about putting it back on the agenda at a meeting in September," Partington said. 

The issue has been before the commission for a long time, but Friesen wanted to be sure all options had been explored with all the parties before implementing regulations.

"Hopefully, there's going to be a good discussion to get to a resolution very soon," Partington said. "I know that commissioner Friesen does want to get this taken care of this year."

Friesen said at a previous meeting that he wants the issue resolved before the public vote happens on whether or not to expand the commission from three to five members, as he doesn't want the wind farm issue to muddy the waters on whether or not the public wants commission expansion.

NICKERSON, Kan. — New USD 309 Superintendent Curtis Nightingale will meet with the school board Tuesday.&nbsp;

The only item on the agenda is an executive session with Nightingale to go over the goals he has set for the district. The district describes the meeting as a training session for the board.

No action will be taken. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the school district offices at 4501 W. 4th Ave., just west of Fun Valley.

The next regular meeting of the USD 309 school board will be Monday, August 23.

USD 309 board to hold training meeting with superintendent

RICE COUNTY — A severe thunderstorm rolled through Rice County Sunday evening and prompted some damage. 

According to reports provided to the National Weather Service office in Wichita on Sunday, at least 22 power poles were snapped, large tree limbs were downed, a barn was destroyed and a half-mile of railroad cars were laid over near Geneseo. 

Storm spotters also reported baseball size hail with that storm.

The same storm prompted a gust of 77 mph at the Lyons airport at 6:40 p.m. Sunday.

Storm damages portions of Rice County Sunday night

Kan. — School may not be completely back to normal everywhere, but its much closer than it was at points last year and that can mean additional hazards for motorists, according to Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas.

"Drivers may be a little out of practice in terms of back to school traffic safety," Steward said. "We'd just like to remind people this time of year to be aware of those kids walking to school or riding their bikes, especially the extra traffic around school zones and certainly paying attention to school buses and the stopping roles related to those."

Given that federal regulations require students to wear masks on school buses right now, they might not be able to see traffic as well, either.

"Follow the laws with regard to stopping for those school buses, so those kids can get out of the bus and to their school safely," Steward said. "All 50 states actually have a school bus stopping law."

Flashing yellow lights on a school bus indicate it is preparing to stop to load or unload children and motorists should slow down and prepare to stop. Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on and off. Motorists are required to stop their vehicles and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop sign is withdrawn and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again.

Kan. — The Volunteer Center and RSVP are holding a Building to Beat Hunger Food Drive and can construction contest to commemorate the 9-11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.

"This is the second year that we are holding this contest," said Jenna Martin, Assistant Director at The Volunteer Center/RSVP. "It's a chance to help others in tribute to those who were killed or injured, first responders, countless others who served to defend the nation's freedom at home and around the globe. Reno County RSVP is asking others to unite in service through our Building to Beat Hunger event. One of the issues communities face is food security. The donations collected through the event will be donated to the Reno County Food Bank to build up their supplies."

If you have a group of friends or colleagues with cash and creativity, you can help.

"We're just asking that business groups, church groups, clubs, organizations, friend groups, individuals even, can collect non-perishable food items and then build a creation to beat hunger in our community," Martin said.

Food drive, can creation contest coming up

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will go over two Public Works projects as part of a light agenda on Tuesday.

The first is for the asphalt overlay of the law enforcement center parking lot and repairs to the sidewalks around the facility. The bid from Circle C Paving totaled $67,411. The second project is the recoating of the water tower located near the intersection of Northwestern Avenue and Tulane Place. The council will take action on a bid from Insco Industries Inc. for $235,520.

Also Tuesday, the council will be asked to approve a special event designation for the area around the Sand Hills Brewery for an event put on by the Vieyra Foundation for the Arts on Aug. 28, and the council will give its usual reports and hear from the city manager.&nbsp;

City Council to go over 2 projects Tuesday

Kan. — As the Kansas State Department of Education prepares to go back out on the road to continue its Kansans Can Success Tour, Mark Tallman with the Kansas Association of School Boards says the hopes stakeholders have for students haven't changed much since Dr. Randy Watson became Education Commissioner.

"What was said five or six years ago about what we want from kids is still accurate," Tallman said. "The general ideas of what schools should do in response are still the same. We're finding, of course, that figuring out how to actually accomplish those changes is more difficult."

Part of the problem is that the pandemic is still throwing sand in the gears of the educational process.

"When this was planned, the feeling was, as we are hopefully moving away from that, we need to talk about what it's going to take to deal with problems that might have happened," Tallman said. "If we had student learning loss, how do we get kids back together? Schools and kids are going to be at very different places. I think the feeling was the worst was over. The last several weeks of this may change."

So far, the schedule remains, including a meeting in Hutchinson August 30. A full week of meetings starts Monday, with Monday through Wednesday in southeast Kansas and Thursday and Friday in south-central Kansas.

Tallman: Success Tour starts back up Monday, needs appear accurate

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Salt City Splash will end its daily operations starting Aug. 17.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The pool will be closed from Aug. 18 through Aug. 20 and open again one final weekend Aug. 21 and Aug. 22.&nbsp;

Salt City Splash ends daily swimming Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College is benefitting from a $132,000 federal grant as part of an effort to remedy the shortage of truckers in the central U.S.&nbsp;

Sens. Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran announced that the funds were being made available through the USDA to meet increased demands for licensed truck drivers across at least four counties in Kansas. The funding will be used for a training instructor at the college and to fund the purchase of the truck driving simulator.

“Our nation is facing a shortage of truck drivers and this pandemic has highlighted how important truckers are to our supply chains,” Sen. Moran said. “This grant will help provide Hutchinson Community College with the tools it needs to train the next generation of truckers.”

The college’s Board of Trustees approved a resolution supporting an application to the United States Department of Agriculture for a Rural Business Development Grant for the simulator back in November as part of the plans to kick off the new instructional course.

HutchCC gets grant funding for trucking instructional program

Gas prices appear to be stabilizing this week.

"The state average right now is $2.94 here in Kansas," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "The good news is Reno County is $2.90 on average, a little bit less than the state average. Kansas is 24 cents less than the national average of $3.18."

The fall hurricane season could still throw a monkey wrench in the works, but it looks like Kansas may be able to stay lower than $3 a gallon in the short term.

"We often look at the Gulf of Mexico refineries," Steward said. "Those typically supply our gasoline in this part of the country. So far, we haven't had anything throughout the season that would impact supply."

It also remains to be seen how OPEC and the countries that move along with it will adjust their production in the coming months, which will have an effect on crude oil prices going forward.

Rise Up Reno Prevention Network needs volunteers to be mentors in USD 308 elementary schools. Volunteers will meet with students once a week to help with schoolwork, listen and encourage them. 

Volunteers are also needed to be part of the Read With Me program. Volunteers will read with students once a week, help with comprehension, retention, and sounding out words. 

The minimum age of volunteers is 18.  Training and background checks must be completed and passed. Volunteers must also be willing to volunteer for the duration of the school year.

GODDARD, Kan. — Add another area lake to the growing list of those infested with blue green algae. Lake Afton near Goddard was added to the list this week by the KDHE.

Marion County Lake and Harvey County East Lake are lakes still under warnings while Buhler City Lake and Marion Reservoir are under a watch.

All contact with the water should be avoided where there are warnings. Fishing is safe if they are cleaned properly. In a watch, you should have limited contact with the water where algae is present. Swimming and skiing are discouraged.&nbsp;

The algae is toxic to pets and livestock and can cause illness in humans.&nbsp;

Lake Afton closed to boating and swimming

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees approved the budget for the next fiscal year during their monthly meeting. The next step in the process will be a public hearing on September 9 with likely final action to follow.

The budget totals $63.1 million&nbsp; on total taxes levied of $13.9 million. The total provides a slight reduction in the mill levy at 21.829, its lowest level in at least nine years. The number is just above the revenue neutral rate of 20.9 mills.&nbsp;

The Board also received an update on the College’s Higher Learning Commission annual assessment and approved a voluntary vaccination incentive being offered to faculty, staff and students.

In addition, the Board approved a new position to support the Kansas Promise Act scholarship program approved by the State in the 2021 legislative session. The Kansas Promise Scholarship Act provides scholarships for select two-year associate degree programs, making them available at no cost to eligible students when other forms of aid are not sufficient to cover the cost of books, tuition and fees.

The next meeting of the board will be on Thursday, September 9.&nbsp; The meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. in the Shears Technology Center Justice Theater.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HutchCC BOT approves budget Thursday

Kan. — Governor Laura Kelly's office announced on Thursday the recipients of more than $6 million in grants to improve services for survivors of sexual assault, violence, and child abuse. BrightHouse was one of those recipients.

"We got $138,533," said director Sue Wray. "That's 3.9% less than what we asked for. You're always disappointed not to be able to get the full amount, but I know that the overall amount was a little bit lower, so everybody got a slightly reduced amount. We're very happy with that number."

The 2022 State General Fund Grant Program for Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault provides funds for sexual and domestic violence programs in communities across Kansas. 

"The pandemic has not really effected our numbers, as far as them going down," Wray said. "People still need a lot of help and we are always happy to be available to help them out. Federal and State grants cover more than 50% of our operating expenses, so we really need them."

The programs are accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provide a wide range of services such as emergency safe shelter, crisis helpline calls, crisis, intervention, on-going counseling and support, and advocacy to help victim and survivors increase safety for themselves and their families.

"We were getting about 35 or 40 clients a week altogether in Reno, Rice, Harvey and Kingman counties," Wray said. "Now we're getting more around 50 clients a week, anywhere between 50 and 60."

Brighthouse gets state SGF grant

Kan. — Melissa Evans said that it's taking her husband Clayton and her some time to realize how much time his recovery from the July 7 accident that has left him with a spinal cord injury will take.

"Clayton and I are learning," Evans said. "We are both very proactive people and a lot of the process early on is hurry up and wait. That's been a little difficult for us, but what has been so neat is that in that time, while there's a lot of waiting for his swelling to go down and to learn more about what it will look like for him in the future, we've spent most of that time wishing we were back in Hutchinson to see all of the incredible things that everyone has been doing and putting together for us and wishing we could just squeeze everyone."

Clayton Evans is at Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado.

"Conversations that we've had with doctors and specialists is that, for the next 12 to 18 months, there's possibility for progression in terms of what he can regain back," Melissa Evans said. "We know with his injury being a complete injury, the numbers are really, really small on that. The focus, what Craig Hospital has reiterated over and over again, is that we are planning for the now, as he works with his physical therapist and his occupational therapist. They are working to make sure that when he comes back, he's able to get back to teaching and coaching and being a husband and a dad with what he has now."

The doctors say Coach Evans being in great physical shape at the time of the accident should help in his functional recovery and they expect him to teach and coach again.

"They are really confident that with how much upper body strength he already had prior to the injury, that's going to make learning to do things a little bit differently much easier for him," Evans said.

The fundraiser for Evans is Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Don Michael Field in Hutchinson. Traveling Bowl, Salt City Chiller and the R-B-Too food truck will be available along with lots of outdoor activities for students and families.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to information released by the U.S. Census Bureau Thursday, Reno County has dropped 4.1% in population from 2010 to 2020.

The 2010 total population of the county was 64,511. The 2020 county population was 61,898. 

McPherson County gained population from 29,180 to 30,223 a gain of 3.6%. 

Rice County lost 6.5%, down to 9,427 from 10,083.

Harvey County lost 1.9% from 34,684 to 34,024.

Kingman County lost 4.9% from 7,858 to 7,470.

Pratt County lost 5.2% from 9,656 to 9,157.

Stafford County lost 8.2%, from 4,437 to 4,072.

The Hutchinson Police Department, NAACP Youth Chapter, Hutch in Harmony, and the Hutchinson Human Relations Officer are excited to invite local youth to the 2nd annual Bridge Builders BBQ this Friday, August 13, 2021, at 4:00 p.m. at the Rice Park building. 

This event is designed to bridge the gap between Hutchinson youth and Police Officers. Hutch in Harmony and the City of Hutchinson are proud to coordinate and to foster relationships between youth, the Hutchinson Police Department, and the neighborhoods it serves.

Bridge Builders BBQ Friday in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department says the 14-day positive test rate in Reno County is currently 14.4% and active cases have increased to 220.&nbsp;

The health department says testing remains an integral part of combating the spread of COVID-19. Testing is available through a local medical provider or at the free community site located at Simply Good Overstocks in South Hutchinson. Visit <a href="http://www.gogettested.com/">www.gogettested.com</a> for scheduling information. KDHE’s mobile vaccine and testing lab will also be in Hutchinson on August 18, 25 and September 1 at the Salvation Army-Food Pantry, 700 N. Walnut, from 8 am to 3 pm.

All individuals should be taking preventative measures such as vaccinating, maintaining a healthy weight, and keeping up with regular doctor appointments. Mitigation methods such as mask wearing, social distancing, and hand sanitizing are also strongly recommended.

Second, is accepting walk-ins for COVID-19 vaccines during their normal operating hours or visit <a href="https://vaccinefinder.org/">https://vaccinefinder.org</a> to find other availability. COVID case count up to 220

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson may have to take matters into its own hands when it comes to a long drawn out issue with a dilapidated building on the city’s south side.

The building at 2100 Bonebrake has been under disrepair for many years and the city has been trying to get the owner to either bring it up to code or raze it. The building's owner Susan Gress was first put on notice by the city in 2019 about its condition. The building has gas lines running to it but both meters have been removed. It also has electrical service with extension cords running into a motorhome.&nbsp;

An official demo notice was sent to the owner in August of 2019 unless construction plans were offered by October of that year. Since then the owner has been given several opportunities to make repairs to the building but nothing has been done.&nbsp;

In March of 2002 a fire caused damage to the structure making it uninhabitable. No permits were issued to make repairs.&nbsp;

On July 21 of this year, the city met with the Gress’ about finding a way to demolish some part of the commercial building and save the north part by renovating it. The city gave Don and Susan Gress until the next July city council meeting to come up with plans for both.&nbsp;

On August 12 a the building official met with the Gress’ and once again asked that the drawings and plans be made available at this Tuesday's meeting. Depending on what happens Tuesday, the city council will be asked to take action on the recommendation that the building be demolished.&nbsp;

Property on Bonebrake back before city council Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After a long negotiation session Wednesday the union representing USD 308 teachers and the school district are moving closer to an agreement.

According to District Human Resources Director Dr. Dawn Johnson, the two sides have agreed in principle on about 11 different issues with about six others left to discuss.&nbsp;

Johnson says that the district is offering a base salary increase to $41,331 including new funds from last year, along with a $750 bonus. Most of the other discussion centered around pay scale movement and verbiage on other issues.

Johnson says both sides talked for more than four hours on Wednesday and have agreed to meet again on August 24.
