Kan. — 
A Buhler school bus was hit Monday afternoon east of Hutchinson. According to the Reno County Sheriff's Office, at&nbsp;approximately 4:00 p.m., deputies with the Reno County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident involving a school bus, belonging to the Buhler School District,&nbsp;at 7705 E 4th Ave, Hutchinson, KS. 

When deputies arrived on scene they made contact with the bus driver&nbsp;a&nbsp;69&nbsp;year old male&nbsp;of McPherson, KS and the driver of a second involved vehicle,&nbsp;a&nbsp;28&nbsp;year old female&nbsp;of Hutchinson, KS.

During a thorough accident investigation, deputies determined&nbsp;the car&nbsp;was following the school bus too closely and ran her vehicle into the rear of the bus while it was stopped&nbsp;to let a&nbsp;child off. A witness confirmed the flashing lights and stop sign were functioning&nbsp;on the bus at the time of the accident. 

Due to contradicting reports, it is unclear whether the final child was off the bus at the time of impact. All parties reported no injuries and were wearing their seatbelts.

The bus was driven from the scene and&nbsp;a tow service&nbsp;removed the second vehicle.&nbsp;The driver of the striking car&nbsp;was arrested for driving while revoked and cited for&nbsp;following too closely.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 School Board will have a fairly light agenda Monday evening. The board will get a presentation from Wiley Elementary School as part of its annual meeting and visit.

The board will also go into executive session several times for personnel matters and discuss the new tentative contract and negotiations with the local teachers union.

The board will approve copy paper purchases and hear the usual reports.

Monday's USD 308 board meeting begins at 6 p.m. at Wiley Elementary School.

Teachers contract, Wiley presentation on USD 308 board agenda

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School is opening its new spirit store, Sammy’s Shack, with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday at 1 p.m.

The idea for Sammy’s Shack originated with principal Ryan Ewy, who wanted to offer a one-stop-shop for students and the community to purchase gear to show their school spirit. The store will be managed by business students, similarly to the Sweet Treat coffee shop located inside the Hutchinson Career &amp; Technical Education Academy building. The store will carry Booster Club merchandise, as well as other products that the students will select and manage.

A unique aspect of Sammy’s Shack is that it will be open to the public during regular school hours. A door for the public was installed so parents and community members can visit during school hours and certain game nights.

Sammy's Shack opens at HHS Tuesday

NEWTON, Kan. — A Kansas man was killed following an accident while doing maintenance on a large recreational vehicle in Harvey County Saturday.

Authorities say 66-year-old Robert Brooks of Wichita was working on the RV with another individual in the 6600 block of South Anderson Road, south of Newton, when the RV rolled on top of him around 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;

The RV was partially lifted off the ground with a floor jack and wheel chocks. Brooks was working underneath the vehicle when it rolled forward off the safety equipment and onto him.

The other individual called 911. The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office and Newton Fire/EMS were called, but Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The next Dillon Lecture Series is Tuesday starting at 10:30 a.m. at the Sports Arena.

The speaker will be Amanda Knox who is an exoneree, journalist, public speaker and author of the New York Times best-selling memoir, “Waiting to Be Heard."

Between 2007 and 2015, she spent nearly four years in an Italian prison and eight years on trial for a murder she didn’t commit. Knox now works to shed light on the issues of wrongful conviction, truth seeking, and public shaming, and to inspire people towards empathy and perspective.

Knox will headline next Dillon Lecture Series program

KINGMAN, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Transportation said a crack repair project on a stretch of U.S. 54 in Kingman County will begin soon.

The project is expected to begin around Nov. 22 and be completed in early December.

The work will be on U.S. 54 from the east city limits of Kingman east to the Kansas 14 junction, a distance 0f about 9 miles.

During the work, traffic will be restricted to one lane and controlled by flaggers and a pilot car. Motorists should be prepared to stop and face delays of up to 15 minutes.

BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman said Monday's transition to remote learning for Buhler Grade School has gone well. Remote learning was instituted after the number of COVID-19 cases jumped dramatically last week.

“The staff has communicated with their parents and their classes and their students. And they have a schedule they’re following for Zoom meetings, and they have materials delivered,” Couchman said. “The transition this morning was pretty smooth. It’s not their first time doing it.”&nbsp;

Counchman said lunches are being distributed for BGS students in the same format they were during the summer meal program.

“Lunch will be provided on a drive-through basis, very similar to how we did it during the summer,” Couchman said. “There will be a sack lunch and a breakfast provided.”

There is no need to sign up. Parents are asked to arrive at the north end of the school to pick up meals.

As of Monday, Buhler Grade School had 26 positive cases. Couchman said the district has had 65 positive cases overall.

Buhler Grade School remote learning begins smoothly

HAVEN, Kan. — Haven USD 312 has named its first Impact Award winner for the 2021-22 school year.

The winner for this quarter is Mindy Barter. Barter has served the district for the past seven years and currently teaches at Haven High School. Barter was nominated by the students who produced hand-written letters in her support.&nbsp;

Barter is one of the high school representatives for the District Leadership Team and the MTSS Reading Team. She has been a past volleyball coach and still is connected to the program by working home events.

Bater will be recognized at Monday’s school board meeting. The Impact Award is handed out each quarter in USD 312. One of the four winners is then named the Impact Award winner for the year at the end of the school year.

Barter named Impact Award winner at Haven USD 312

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With fall here, it is deer rutting season — and the number of car/deer accidents has increased over the past several weeks as the animals become more active.&nbsp;

“We see most of our accidents at dusk, just as the sun is starting to go down and the first hour or two afterward and right at sunrise,” said Levi Blumanhourst of the Reno County Sheriff’s Department.&nbsp;

Blumanhourst said that while people want to take evasive action to save their vehicle, it's best to just hold the line and try to stop before hitting the animal.

“What we ask people to do is make sure you have your headlights on and that you’re scanning the ditch, scanning the fields and tree rows as you approach them,” Blumanhourst said. “If a deer happens to come&nbsp; up onto the road in front of you, the best thing you can do is slow down and not swerve to avoid the deer. When people swerve, that's when we normally see more of an injury accident.”

Blumanhourst said if you see one deer stay alert, because chances are there is another one or two along with it.

Police: Motorists need to be more alert for deer

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Hutchinson's annual Youth of the Year event is coming up next month.

"Being named Youth of the Year, it's probably the highest honor a Boys and Girls Club member can make within our club or any club," said Skip Wilson with the Boys and Girls Club. "It's the premier recognition program for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. It promotes service to the club, community and family and then academic success, strong moral character, life goals, poise and public speaking ability."

There are three Hutchinson students that are part of the competition locally this year, Kimberly Villanueva, Bostyn Castor and Noah Khochar.

"Each state winner this year is going to receive $5000, each state winner is going to recieve $10,000 of college scholarships and that's renewable for four years," Wilson said. "Then, six of those winners across the country will compete nationally and the winner of that will get a $25,000 renewable for four years so, $100,000 for higher learning. We're excited. We have three great, great candidates."

The Youth of the Year banquet is December 2nd from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Crystal Ballroom in Hutchinson.

November is National Hospice Month.

"Hospice and Home Care Month is a special time that we, as an industry and an agency honor all of our staff," said Stacy Goss, Community Liason for Hospice &amp; HomeCare of Reno County. "That includes nurses, home care aides, social workers, chaplains, homemakers, volunteers and our administration. Every day our staff is able to make a remarkable difference in the lives of our patients and their families. We take health care and we make it personal and we bring it home to our patients."

Hospice is a tough subject for some families, but with the holidays coming up, it's one that may need to be addressed.

"There is a common myth that hospice means giving up or throwing in the towel," Goss said. "The reality is that hospice care is just one more form of care. It focuses on reducing pain and discomfort for the patient while improving their quality of life. These objectives are just as important as treating an illness itself. It's been statistically proven that caregiver support is also very important. We provide support to the family unit as a whole through volunteer services to sit with the patients, veteran volunteers, as well, for those veterans on services. We provide social work and home health aides, all sorts of different levels of care, besides just the standard nursing care."

There are some events coming up to commemorate Veterans Day this week.

"November 10, we will be recognizing our staff and volunteers within the Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System with a short ceremony," Goss said. "This will include the dedication of a new flagpole and the new foyer, which has been redecorated at the Hospice House. On Veterans Day, on November 11, we have three events. We will be buying coffee for veterans and a guest. If you are in Hutch, this will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Scuttlebutts. In Lyons, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., we will be at Brew 56. If you're in McPherson, we will be serving root beer floats from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the McPherson Senior Center."

The project is part of Hospice's participation in "We Honor Veterans," a national program established to promote collaboration between the Department of Veterans Affairs and hospice organizations throughout the nation.

"This will include the dedication of a new flagpole and the new foyer, which has been redecorated at the Hospice House. On Veterans Day, on November 11, we have three events. We will be buying coffee for veterans and a guest. If you are in Hutch, this will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Scuttlebutts. In Lyons, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., we will be at Brew 56. If you're in McPherson, we will be serving root beer floats from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the McPherson Senior Center."The project is part of Hospice's participation in "We Honor Veterans," a national program established to promote collaboration between the Department of Veterans Affairs and hospice organizations throughout the nation.

There may be similar issues with TSA staffing, unfortunately, right as we go into the Thanksgiving holiday."

If you are really concerned about your plans going sideways, especially because of COVID, you might consider talking to an agent about travel insurance, but you'll need to get into the details of any individual policy to see what it covers.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Reno County is kicking off a matching fundraiser on Monday.

"Monday starts our matching gift campaign," said Denise Brodsky with Big Brothers Big Sisters. "It's being tagged as #givegratefully. It's a dollar for dollar match. It will begin Monday and go through November 30. For every dollar that is donated, it means double and it all stays here in Reno County."

Adult volunteers are matched with children from age 5 to young adulthood.

"Bigs are rigorously vetted," Brodsky said. "That means going through background checks. We spend a great deal of time in an interview situation. They have to also provide some references, which we carefully check. It's a safe environment. We want to make sure that our bigs are strong candidates and will be positive role models, too."

"We'll be over at Scuttlebutts with you guys," Brodsky said. "We'll have some really fun and exciting guests that are going to come and talk about their experiences. We've got bigs, we've got donors, we've got parents who are going to come and share their experiences and hopefully they will inspire you all to make that year-end contribution."

The BW Morning Show will be with BBBS starting at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Matching fundraiser for BBBS of Reno County starts Monday

As we celebrate the 150th birthday of Hutchinson and Reno County, we want to go through the years, decade by decade, to see how things have changed and — remarkably — how they have stayed the same. This would not be possible without the efforts of Steve Harmon, the Reno County Museum, and the Hutchinson Public Library, who have made a great effort to supply us with the information and photos that you’ll see in this 15-part series. We hope you enjoy it.

As we move closer to the end of your journey through The Decades, many exciting things are happening in Hutchinson. The city became home to one of the premier sporting complexes, which many would soon copy. It also saw the beginning of a major expansion of a humble museum that would make it one of the premier collections of space artifacts in the country. It was the end of the line for one of Hutchinson's first railroads. And it was the end of an era for the family-owned Dillons stores. It also included visits from many popular celebrities, including the “greatest of all time.”

1980: One of the longer-running small-town newspapers ceased publication as the Nickerson Argosy closes after 103 years.

Collins Bus fire destroys facility at old naval base.

The Buhler School district expands its footprint in the Hutchinson area as Prairie Hills Middle School opens.

Fun Valley opens with ball diamonds, water slide park and fishing lake along with offices.

The Hutchinson Mental Health Center opens its doors for service.

One of the more bizarre crimes in Reno County occurred when a 15-year-old robbed the bank in Arlington.

The Cosmosphere and Discovery Center opens and begins a long run of major improvements that make the museum what it is today.

Finally ridding the downtown of parking meters, the city of Hutchinson decides to sell off the 2,100 meters. The meters are gone in less than one day.

One of the first railroads that came through Reno County ended after a long and difficult history as Rock Island ceased operations in 1980. The portion of the railroad that traveled through Reno County was taken over by the Southern Pacific, which eventually merged with the Union Pacific.

One of the staples of the downtown shopping area closed as Wards ended business operations.

The Frisco Railroad is absorbed by the Burlington Northern. Shortly after, the BN abandoned the line running from Wichita to Great Bend, ending rail service to Buhler and Medora.

1981:&nbsp;One of the enduring programs that brings special speakers to Hutchinson, the Dillon Lecture Series began at Hutchinson Community College.

Air ambulance service comes to Hutchinson Hospital.

Not as big as the one most recently completed, the Hutchinson Sports Arena gets a $1.8 million facelift.

A rail car explodes, sending toxic fumes through the south part of the city. Schools are closed and parts of the city are evacuated. The trestle over the Arkansas River near Carey Park burns.

In an effort to keep drunk drivers off the road, the Reno County Sheriff's Department buys a breathalyzer.&nbsp;

One of the many accomplishments of the Hutch High band and Salt Shakers happened in 1981 when they marched at the inaugural parade for President Ronald Regan.

&nbsp;1982: Better technology comes to Hutchinson Hospital as a new CAT scan machine is installed.

Unemployment rate is higher that it was during the 2020 pandemic as the jobless rate hits 8.5%.

A rash of arson fires hits Hutchinson with 30 homes burned.

The population of Reno County hits 65,000. Today's population, according to the 2020 census, is 61,000.

The first woman patrol deputy is hired by the Reno County Sheriff’s Department

One of the great Christmas traditions started in Hutchinson in 1982 as the first Hyde Park Luminaries was held. Today about 40,000 luminaries are lit on the last Saturday before Christmas.

1983: Unemployment is still a problem as it hits a record 10.6%.

The end of an era in grocery shopping in Hutchinson and Kansas as Dillons is purchased by Kroger.&nbsp;

Newly-remodeled Liberty and Sherman junior high schools open. Today they are HMS 7 and 8.

The city buys most of the Fun Valley Sports Complex. The facility is run by both the city and Hutch Rec.&nbsp;

A record 11.5 million bushels of wheat is harvested in Reno County.

The Bob Johnson Youth Center is opened and is part of the county.

The county commission rids itself of the Broadacres County Home as it is sold off to a private company.

&nbsp;1984:&nbsp;Holiday Inn Holidome opens as new kind of motel and convention center.

One of the more horrific and high-profile crimes in Reno County occurred in 1984 when Arnold Ruebke Jr. was arrested and convicted in the shotgun slayings of 2-year-old twins Andrew and James Vogelsang and their babysitter Tammy Mooney in Arlington. Ruebke died in prison in March of 2021.

It was a part of Hutchison for 26 years, but in 1984, the Kansas Wheat Commission moved its headquarters from Hutchinson to Manhattan.

A major ice storm hits the area, more than 12,00 homes are without power.

The Nickerson mayor is ousted after a recall vote.

Salt Shakers dance in London and win international award for their performance.

The city takes over the Hutchinson Zoo after a long and controversial process between the city and the Hutchinson Zoological Society.

The Court Appointed Services Advocate (CASA) begins service in Reno County

1985:&nbsp;Members of the Peel family are taken hostage after TWA flight 847 is hijacked and flown to Algiers and Beirut. Eventually all of the passengers are released during a two-week period.

The Hutchinson Mall opens to much fanfare. The battle begins to keep shoppers downtown. Eventually the mall’s appeal begins to decline and now only a few spaces remain open. RockStep capital has been able to revive some of the open spaces in the past three years.

A major staple of the city for so many years, Wiley's closes for good.

A major hail storm rolls through the area causing more than $35 million in damage. With the large number of claims, insurance adjusters set up a mobile facility at the fairgrounds.

Muhammad Ali visits Hutchinson and stops to talk to students at Sherman Middle School.

One way to try to curb crime was established in 1985 as Reno County Crime Stoppers started.

More help for both fighting crime and calling for help began in 1985 with Reno County 911 starting operations.

One of the crown jewels of Hutchinson, the Hutchinson Fox Theatre, closes. Eventually the theatre reopens after a major renovation and is entertaining folks again today.

1986: After moving to Haven, the Reno County Museum moved back to Hutchinson.

Following the takeover the year before, the city of Hutchinson opened the Hutchinson Zoo.

The Nickerson USD 309 school district finds a new home office as it purchases the offices complex at Fun Valley.

A nurse is fined for refusing to treat an AIDS patient.

The Hutchinson Public Library gets a new piece of technology as it acquires a computer-driven card catalog system as part of an overall renovation of the library.

1987:&nbsp;The Quest Center opens and becomes an incubator for small businesses in Hutchinson.

Bob Hope performs at the Kansas State Fair.

A Nickerson man is shot by a sniper on the steps of the Reno County Courthouse after he threatens to blow up the courthouse. Explosives are found on his body.

In the early years of Hutchinson, there were repeated efforts to open saloons and bars that were defeated. In 1987, liquor by the drink was established after a vote of the public the year before.

County officials dedicate a new bridge on West 4th Avenue over Cow Creek.

The post office in the small town of Medora closed.

The Kansas Lottery begins operations with 70 local retailers selling lottery tickets.

The Kansas State Fair celebrates its 75th year.

1988: Pan Am flight 103 is blown up by terrorists over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 259 on board including Hutchinson resident David Ludlow, who was serving overseas and on his way home for his sister's funeral.

One of the premier cancer care centers in Kansas opened in 1987 with the Cancer Treatment Center opening in Hutchinson.

Lois Schlickau of Haven is the first woman named President of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture.

There have always been mountain lion sightings in the area, most of which were proven false, but in 1987, a mountain lion was supposedly spotted playing through on the fifth hole at the Haven golf course.

County landfill employees party on confiscated liquor that is disposed of by the Hutchinson Police Department.

HutchCC wins the 1988 NJCAA National Basketball Tournament.

Standing since 1923, the Wolcott Building is razed in downtown Hutchinson.

A major drug operation that was bringing drugs into the reformatory and other places in Reno County from California was busted.

1989:&nbsp;Still supporting those in need today, Interfaith Housing began operations in Hutchinson.

An ammonia leak forces the evacuation of residents in Plevna.

During the savings and loan failure nationwide, two area S&amp;L’s are taken over by the government.&nbsp;

The three Graham brothers are all awarded their Eagle Scout badges at the same time.

Fire rips through the Radio Shack store at 108 N. Main, doing more than $135,000 in damage.&nbsp;

 </figure>One way to try to curb crime was established in 1985 as Reno County Crime Stoppers started.More help for both fighting crime and calling for help began in 1985 with Reno County 911 starting operations.One of the crown jewels of Hutchinson, the Hutchinson Fox Theatre, closes. Eventually the theatre reopens after a major renovation and is entertaining folks again today.<figure>

The Decades: 1980s


HUTCHINSON,
Kan. — The Reno County Board of Commissioners will canvass the November 2nd election at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 in the Reno County Annex Conference Room at 125 W. 1st Avenue.

Since county commissioner Daniel Friesen is not available in person, Reno County Sheriff Darrian Campbell will serve as the third member of the canvassing board along with Commissioners Ron Hirst and Ron Sellers.

During the days between the election and the county canvass, the county's election official prepares the tabulated results from the original canvass and groups all provisional ballots, challenged ballots and issues referred by the original canvass boards in preparation for the county canvass.

The tabulated results are presented to the county canvassers along with issues that need to be resolved. The county board of canvassers has the statutory duty to make the final decisions as to which ballots are valid and which are invalid. This includes making all final decisions about voter intent on mismarked ballots, write-in votes, and provisional and challenged ballots.

If a recount has been requested in one or more races, the county canvass is not completed until the recount is completed. The other election results may be certified, but the canvassers must meet again after the recounts to certify the results of the recounted races.

In local elections, the decision of the county canvassing board is official and final. There are 96 provisional ballots to be looked at by the canvassing board on Tuesday.

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler USD 313 School Board will have a full agenda Monday.

The board will go over several personnel matters as part of the consent agenda. The board will also get an update of the new AdAstra Virtual School that was started by the district this year.&nbsp;

The board will also spend time in executive session. Four of those will be for personnel, one for a student matter and the last for negotiations. The board will also take action on new landscaping around Crusader Stadium and hear the usual reports.&nbsp;

The board will also get an update on three building projects, including the expo building and the House of Capper project.

The fair will go over the lease agreement with the Hutchinson Fire Department for the new fire station that will be located on the fairgrounds when constructed and discuss the skyride contract, the cabin agreement with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and meet with representatives with the Hutchinson Community Foundation.

Tuesday's meeting begins at 1 p.m. at the KSF Administrative Office on the fairgrounds.
