HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Landmarks Commission will meet Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m.

The new business before the commission is a request to replace seven windows on the second floor front elevation at 20 S Main Street, the former J.C. Penney's Co. Building, now Sanford's Computerworks.

Landmarks Commission to meet Thursday

The Hutchinson Fire Department raised $78,341.52 during their back-to-school supply drive.

Donations were more than $6,000 greater than 2019.

Each year, Hutch Fire asks teachers and principals what the kids in their schools need and then spends four days outside Walmart and Dillons in Hutchinson to receive supplies.

HFD would like to thank the great citizens of Hutchinson and the surrounding area for coming out and supporting them along with their corporate sponsors, Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and RCB Bank.

Supplies are being distributed to schools throughout the county Thursday and Friday.

HFD sets record in school supply drive


HUTCHINSON,
Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson Regional Medical Center employees are mostly vaccinated, according to Chuck Welch with the hospital.

"We were at 75% for awhile," Welch said. "We're north of that now. I haven't seen the latest, but I know that we're trending toward 80%."

Welch said the hospital does not, at this point, plan to mandate COVID-19 vaccination.

"We discuss this topic almost every day as an executive team," Welch said. "Right now, with the volunteer adoption of the vaccine, the trend that we're moving toward 100%, we really want to stay away from mandating anything as long as we can."

The hospital still does mandate masks for anyone inside, though.

"Masks are still required," Welch said. "We're allowing two visitors that can be rotated out. Masks are absolutely required throughout the facility. I really don't see that changing in the foreseeable future. We were first in on the masks. We'll probably be last out."

The hospital also requires a temperature check for visitors to the facility, as well.

Restrictions continue at HRMC, but no vaccine mandate thus far

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre is pleased to confirm the Colin Mochrie &amp; Brad Sherwood “Scared Scriptless” show for Sunday, August 22 at 7:30 p.m. To ensure the presentation of the show, the Fox is asking for patron assistance.

To ensure the comfort and health of audiences, staff, cast and crew, and to prioritize their safety, Mills Entertainment requires all guests to wear face coverings at all times when attending “Scared Scriptless," regardless of vaccination status.

Guests unwilling or unable to comply with the face covering policy need to reach out to the Fox Theatre box office at 877-FOX-SHOW, or come to the theatre in person to have their tickets refunded, no later than 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 18. No refunds will be issued after August 18.

The Fox is also strongly encouraging masks at the Eddie Palmieri Latin Jazz concert on Saturday, August 21 and any other future events. 

Fox staff will be disinfecting the theatre after all events.

Fox Theatre releases COVID update

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The HutchCC Board of Trustees will hold their monthly agenda session Thursday evening.&nbsp;

The board will go over a new position to oversee the new Kansas Promise Act program. The new program offers scholarships to those who want to enter a technical career, and the board will go over a voluntary vaccination incentive program for faculty and students.

A request has also been made by the chamber of commerce for 400 chairs to be used at the fairgrounds. That will be considered during the meeting, along with an executive session to go over the latest negotiations with the college's faculty. Thursday's meeting begins at 7 p.m at the Shears Technology Center on the HutchCC campus.

HutchCC BOT meets Thursday evening

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The last big bash of the summer is almost upon us. The Reno County Sheriff’s Department says they will be out in force for the next two weeks looking for impared drivers.

From Friday, August 20th through Labor Day, September 6th, the SO will join other law enforcement agencies across the State of Kansas to crack down and remove drunk and impaired drivers from Kansas roadways during You Drink, You Drive, You Lose.&nbsp;

The sheriff’s department wants to remind you that It is illegal to drive anywhere in the State of Kansas while impaired, and encourages everyone to designate a sober driver if you’re going to be out celebrating.&nbsp;

Local agencies join Labor Day DUI crackdown

The heat may have helped with the flea and tick issues in the short term, but it's still something you need to pay attention to for your pets.

"The ticks will be dying off here," said Randy Smith, DVM with Apple Lane Animal Hospital. "Fleas, if it gets too hot and dry, they'll go dormant again. They'll still pop back out. The cocoons will rehatch and the ones that stay on the animals will live, but the ones that happen to fall off if they are in the yard or whatever, if it gets too hot for them, they will go dormant."

Insects always pop back up as things cool for the fall, though and heartworm infections are always dangerous.

"We recommend year-round heartworm treatment at the clinic," said Erica Miller, DVM. "I like to tell people when they say, well, can I take the winters off? I like to ask them, which months are the winter months to you? Last year, we had warm days all the way into October and November. Better to be safe and just keep them on that chew monthly."

Smith did say though that it is much better in recent years now that they have the heartworm chew, as that used to be a daily medication and it is much more likely to not be forgotten if it is once a month rather than daily.

Work on a section of U.S. 54 in Pratt will begin soon.

The Kansas Department of Transportation project involves grading and pavement replacement on U.S. 54 from New Street to Mound Street in Pratt. The length is .15 of a mile.

During the work – expected to start around Aug. 23 and be completed around the end of the year – traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction, and the speed limit will be set at 20 mph through the construction zone. New, High and Mound streets will be closed periodically throughout the project.

Vogts-Parga Construction, of Newton, is the primary contractor for the $744,409 project.

Grading, surfacing on part of U.S. 54 in Pratt starts soon

The redistricting meeting Wednesday morning at Stringer Fine Arts Center in Hutchinson was one of the better meetings in terms of feedback of the 14-city tour happening this week.

"We've had better turnouts during the day than our evening tour," said Senate Redistricting Committee Chair Republican Rick Wilborn of McPherson. "You would never have guessed that. We were being criticized having these during working hours. The turnouts, what we've seen, has been better."

Nine people came to the meeting to speak along with three who submitted written testimony. The Kansas Legislative Research Department noted that they will get the building blocks of the data they need to do the actual remapping tomorrow and then an easier version to digest of the data will be available at the end of September.

Of those who spoke in Hutchinson, Calvin Wright of the Hutchinson NAACP and Anthony Frischenmeyer of the Prairie Independent Living Resource Center asked for a non-partisan group to make the decision. 

Also, former Sedgwick County Election Commissioner Tabitha Lehman, representing the League of Women Voters, called for the decision to be made farther ahead so that election officials can do the job of letting candidates and the public know of any changes.

"I'm pleased with the input we got from Hutch and also Dodge City," said Democratic Rep. Jason Probst of Hutchinson, a member of the House committee. "It seemed that those communities mobilized a lot quicker. As you can hear from the people talking, they don't really know what specifics to offer people, because they had very little advance notice and we don't have the census block data to make these decisions on."

Wilborn noted that it is premature to talk about mapping at this point until they get that data later this week, but they should have a lot more to work with once that comes out. Probst also noted that once that data becomes publicly available there will be lots of tools the public could use to give their representatives potential maps to choose from and then turn into legislative language.

Redistricting meeting in Hutch gets lots of feedback

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A man is in jail after leading law enforcement on a high speed chase Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Reno County Sheriff's Department, Reno County Dispatch informed deputies about a vehicle that the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Highway Patrol had pursued at different times. All of the agencies terminated their pursuit of a 2000 Ford Mustang driven by 18-year-old Logan Myers of Hutchinson as he came into Reno County.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dispatch continued&nbsp; receiving calls from motorists complaining about the driver speeding in excess of 100 miles per hour, while not being pursued. The car neared South Hutchinson when deputies were informed that the vehicle had just performed a hit and run accident along K-96 Highway.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Law enforcement located Myers at 4th and Airport Road. When deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, Myers fled towards Hutchinson on 4th. He then went South onto K-61 Highway and continued out of town, onto rural roads, and K-96 for the remainder of the pursuit. Myers then forced another vehicle off of the road on Yoder Road near Eales Road. Eventually he&nbsp; ran over a tire deflation device and stopped his vehicle about four miles into Sedgwick County.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Myers was arrested for Felony Flee and Elude, Reckless Driving, Illegal Display of Tag, No Drivers License, No Insurance, and four Counts of Aggravated Assault for the vehicle he ran off of the road. He’s being held on a bond of $52,000.

Hutchinson teen arrested after high speed chase

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson fire crews were called to the 9400 block of North Madison to help a woman who needed rescued Tuesday.

According to the fire department, a woman was mowing with a large field-type mower around 9:45 a.m. As she tried to exit out of a ditch, the mower tipped back to where the front of the mower was pointing straight up in the air. The woman was on her back. Fortunately, the mower stayed stable until fire crews were able to use a truck to pull it back onto its wheels.

HFD responds to rescue situation

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 has heard back from Facebook as to the justification for removing Monday’s school board meeting from the social media platform.

The meeting featured a lot of discussion and comment from patrons regarding the district's COVID policy and the mask mandate for all students and staff.&nbsp;

Director of Communications for USD 308 Marissa Meis says the district received notification from Facebook on why the meeting was removed. According to Facebook, it violated their Community Standards on “spam.” Meis says the district disputes that claim, and the video has gone back for review.&nbsp;

The school board was set to approve the new guidelines for the district COVID response when a number of patrons spoke out against the policy regarding masks. The district feels that it was that discussion that got the video censored. The district says it will take steps to make sure that there is backup to the district's video system and its Facebook site for future meetings.

USD 308 hears from Facebook on censorship of board meeting

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The South Hutchinson City Council unanimously agreed in principle last night to accept an offer by Reno County to assist in the replacement of the Scott Boulevard bridge. The action comes a week after the county extended a formal offer of assistance to Mayor Matt Nisly.

Reno County Public Works Director Don Brittain consulted with an engineer that the county works with regularly for their own projects and it is believed that a bridge can be built for about half the price of the original $700,000 estimate by using a different type of design and construction.

“With the help of Reno County, we’re hoping to save our taxpayers about $350,000,” Mayor Matt Nisly said after the meeting. “We are fortunate to have them as a partner and I appreciate the efforts of Commissioner Hirst in reaching this win-win resolution.”

Under the terms of the agreement, Reno County would not provide any direct financial assistance towards the project. However, Brittain would serve as the project manager and oversee the project. Additionally, the county would complete inspections and other necessary items as in-kind contributions to reduce the city’s expense. Brittain has 22-years of experience at K-DOT serving as their District 5 superintendent prior to coming to Reno County.

“We know we are in good hands with Don and can’t wait to get started,” City Administrator Joseph Turner said.

The City of South Hutchinson is still in the process of figuring out financing options and needs to discuss project timelines in more detail with Reno County.

South Hutchinson City Council reaches agreement on bridge

With disasters still possible across the United States, the American Red Cross needs people to help.

"We're anticipating a pretty active hurricane season," Red Cross spokesperson Jan Hale said. "Just with everything that has gone on in the last year and a half, the Red Cross just wants people to know that we are in need of volunteers."

The Red Cross needs new volunteers to support disaster shelters. Volunteers will help with reception, registration, food distribution, dormitory, information collection and other vital tasks inside disaster shelters.

"We try to make it as easy as possible for people to get the information they need," Hale said. "They can simply go to redcross.org/volunteer and a lot of information will be right there on the website. You can even apply online."

In addition to the volunteer need, the Red Cross still needs blood donations.

"These are the dog days of summer," Hale said. "It's hot. People are getting ready for the kiddos to go back to school. Things are ramping back up, but regardless of what the date is on the calendar, there is always a need for blood."

Hale said the Red Cross still especially needs type O positive and type O negative blood.

Red Cross looking for volunteers and donors as August continues

KDHE’s mobile lab will be back in Hutchinson to administer COVID-19 and Hepatitis A vaccines, along with rapid COVID testing for the next four Wednesdays. The lab will be located at the Salvation Army/Food Pantry, 700 N. Walnut Street, Hutchinson, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on August 11, 18, 25 and September 1. All services are free and confidential, and no appointment is needed.

COVID-19 cases have steadily increased in Reno County over the past month and are currently at 180 active cases and 5 hospitalizations. 42.75% of Reno County residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

A $15 meal coupon for Applebee’s in Hutchinson is also still available to the first 30 vaccine recipients each day. Limit one coupon a month.

Reno County saw a rise of Hepatitis A cases this spring. Hepatitis A is a vaccine-preventable liver infection caused by the hepatitis A Virus (HAV). The virus is usually spread through close personal contact with an infected person or through eating contaminated food or drink. The best way to prevent hepatitis A is to be vaccinated with the full, two-dose series. 

The Health Department, at 209 W. Second, is also accepting walk-ins for COVID-19 vaccines during their normal operating hours. In addition, they will be holding a vaccination clinic on Saturday, August 14, from 8 a.m. to noon. The vaccine is free to any Reno County resident, regardless of citizen status or insurance. High temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Part of Monday’s meeting of the USD 308 School Board dealt with a large number of patrons who were against the district's COVID policy that requires students and staff to wear masks while indoors.&nbsp;

“We appreciate people that are passionate and care very deeply about the welfare of their children,” Superintendent Mike Folks said. “We had a lot of parents that attended the board meeting and several of them spoke in regards to the recommendation for a mask requirement.”

Folks says he certainly understands the frustration of patrons and feels some of that too.

“Six weeks ago we were watching this and we were in summer school and we were thinking that this would not be the path whatsoever,” Folks said. “Things have really changed, forcing us to pivot our plans.”

With legislation that all but eliminated the ability to have remote learning, the district could face students going to the virtual school during the year.&nbsp;

“The virtual school is a different platform and it's not like remote learning . . . it’s more of an online learning experience,” Folks said. “We just cannot allow the yo-yo back and forth that went on last year.”

Folks says his hope is to be able to remove the mask mandate some time during the school year.

“My goal, my hope here, is that some time in September, October . . . I’m hoping this fourth wave is behind us and we’re seeing a decline in numbers where we can remove the masks and get back to complete normalcy,” Folks said. “We’re trying to have an educational experience that is as normal as possible.”

The board approved the COVID policy last night.

The first closing will run through Saturday, Aug. 14, or until equipment is cleared. The second runs from Tuesday, Aug. 17, through Saturday, Aug. 21, or until equipment is cleared. K-42 closed in Kingman and Pratt counties

Kan. — Kansas families who are searching for work at local workforce centers will now have greater access to child care thanks to a new program announced this week.

"This is a partnership that was initiated by the Kansas Department of Commerce and our local workforce development board," said Laura Patzner with Kansas Workforce One. "It's really to help folks get childcare while they are looking for and initially starting a job."

The partnership uses Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act Title I federal funding and the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) child care subsidy for job seekers and matches seekers to the funding source most applicable to them.

"It's really to help our businesses as well," Patzner said. "As you know, there's a shortage of qualified employees. That shortage really is a detriment to our economy. This is a great step forward and it really is a testament to the partnerships that have been built."

The funds available through WIOA total $500,000 and are available to eligible persons job searching and accessing services through Kansas Workforce Centers.

"When customers come in to our workforce center here in Local Area One, we're having the conversation about, are you having issues with job search or getting that job because of childcare?", Patzner said. "Then we help identify whether or not they want to apply for services through the Department for Children and Families and their EES program."

A DCF child care assistance application may be submitted online, by mail, fax, dropped off, or submitted in-person at a DCF service center.

The USD 308 Board of Education voted to approve the new COVID-19 Protocol guidelines for the 2021-2022 school year during its regular meeting Monday (August 9, 2021).

The following safety protocols began Wednesday, August 4, 2021, and were officially approved by the Board at Monday’s meeting:

All students, staff and visitors will be required to wear a mask indoors in all USD 308 facilities, regardless of vaccination status.

Outdoor activities and events will not require masks, but are recommended.

No temperature checks will occur by the district before entering USD 308 buildings. 

It is recommended that staff and families practice home symptom screenings prior to coming to work or school. 

COVID-19 vaccination is not required by the district, but it is encouraged to all who are eligible to receive the vaccine.

The Board of Education also heard comments from the community during Public Participation. Melissa Evans, assistant principal at Hutchinson Middle School – 7, expressed gratitude to the Board of Education and the Hutchinson community for their support during her husband’s, Coach Clayton Evans, recovery. Coach Evans was in a serious accident last month resulting in a spinal injury. Many local organizations in the community have rallied together to fundraise for the family. Melissa Evans thanked the Board of Education for their support, and expressed her love for the Hutchinson community.
