Kan. — Reno County gas prices are at $2.98 a gallon, which is still lower than average in Kansas.

"We've reached a milestone that drivers are probably not that happy about," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "We reached $3 a gallon on average in Kansas. That comes almost exactly seven years after the last time we were at that level."

October is not normally a high time for gas prices.

"We typically see prices start to decline this time of year, after summer vacations are over and people get back to school," Steward said. "We typically see less demand for gas, which lowers prices."

More than half of the price at the pump comes from crude oil.

"High crude oil prices are the primary factor driving the higher costs and prices at the pumps," Steward said. "Crude oil prices rose pretty quickly following OPEC and its allies choosing not to move forward with an agreement to produce an additional 800,000 barrels per day in November. Instead, they decided to maintain a previously agreed upon 400,000."

November West Texas Crude was above $80 a barrel as of Thursday morning.

Gas prices at levels not seen in several years

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Advance voting for the Nov. 2nd election begins Friday in Reno County. Advance voting can be done at the Reno County Annex during normal business hours.

Mail out advance ballot went out on Wednesday to county residents. County Elections Clerk Jenna Fager says 644 ballots went out Wednesday and applications are still being taken.

The number of registered voters has also increased in Reno County. Just before the 2020 election there were 39,274 registered voters in the county. In 2020 the number has increased to 40,710.

Fee Insurance moving Wichita offices to a new location

Kan. — Central Christian School in Hutchinson has an introductory event for prospective parents coming up this weekend.

"Saturday, October 16th from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., we are inviting families who are interested," said Superintendent Dr. John Walker. "It's really just kind of an informal time for people to come and hear about the school, what we're all about, what our curriculum is, what activities we offer."

The mission of Central Christian is to partner with Christian families to provide students with a distinctive Christ-centered education which integrates faith, life, and learning. 

"We're actually going to have a time where we're going to be engaging with the audience through some questions and doing some presentations," Walker said. "We're going to have some previous students who have graduated come back and speak and give their testimony of how Central shaped their life. One family is going to have the opportunity to receive a $500 scholarship."

CCS is a preschool through Grade 12 Christian school, and for the 2021–22 school year, there are 215 students enrolled. There are 33 preschool students, 77 elementary students, and 105 students enrolled in Grades 6–12.

Central Christian event coming up Saturday

Kan. — The Board of Reno County Commissioners wanted to clarify for the public what they would be voting for if they vote to expand the board from three to five members.

"The concern of some people is that the governor would appoint the two new commissioners," said commissioner Daniel Friesen. "That is incorrect."

What would happen is that the governor would consult with the county commission on when the election to fill the two newly created seats would take place.

"There's either a general election, which everybody's familiar with, it's what we're going through in November, or there is a special election," Friesen said. 

County Counselor Joe O'Sullivan agreed with Friesen's interpretation of the statute. The Board has made clear they have no desire to fill the seats in a special election. O'Sullivan reminded the board that, at least in the most recent case in Leavenworth County, the governor has respected the sitting commission's wishes.

"I know that the governor followed their preference," O'Sullivan said. "I can't necessarily predict, but if past indicators are true and I think the county clerk has communicated with that office that it's expected that the governor consults with the county commission."

If the intent of the sitting commission is followed, then the new seats, if they are approved by the voters, would be filled at the November general election in 2022.

Kan. — Michael Devine with the IRS clarified that the deadline for those who filed for an extension on their taxes is Friday.

"We expected to get about 1.3 million returns from Kansas," Devine said. "About one tenth of those or 131,000 returns, we expected to ask for an extension. That was an extension of time to file, not to pay. All taxes were due on May 17 this year, because of the extended deadline."

If you should have gotten a refund, you should still file.

"All the penalties and interest are related to a balance due, to not paying all the taxes you owe," Devine said. "If you're going to get a refund, then the only thing that's happening, is you're not getting your money. You can't get a refund without filing that tax return."

The worst thing you can do is nothing. Contact the IRS yourself by initiating the call, or go to their website, if you have questions.

"<a href="https://www.irs.gov/">IRS.gov</a> is the site where we keep all the information," Devine said. "It's user friendly. You can find just about anything about your taxes you want. You can even find a copy of your old tax records once you log in correctly. That's the best place to go."

IRS: Deadline for extended filers is Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man charged with murder in the shooting of two men in April of this year&nbsp; was bound over for trial following a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Reno County District Court.

Sixty-four-year-old Sandral Wade is charged with one count of first- degree murder in the shooting death of Orlando Gipson and one count of attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of Landre Bowie. He's also charged with two alternating counts of aggravated robbery and criminal possession of a firearm. A count of conspiracy to commit first degree murder was dismissed.

Wade was arrested in connection with the early morning shooting in the 1500 block of West 12th Avenue. Officers arrived at the scene and found Bowie laying in the street with gunshot wounds to his abdomen. He was transferred to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment and survived. Officers then located Gipson in the front yard of a nearby residence with a single gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Bowie testified during the hearing Wednesday saying that Wade was the person who shot him before he crawled out into the street where police who were in the area assisted him. He also told detectives that he could hear Gibson shouting “don’t shoot me.”

Also on the stand was the co-defendant in the case, Robert Legrange who in exchange for his testimony pleaded guilty to obstruction in the apprehension of a felon, interference with law enforcement and several counts of endangerment of law enforcement last Friday. 

Lagrange testified that he saw Wade shoot the two men. He also said that Wade tried to give him a cell phone which he threw in the trash. The phone belonged to Bowie. Lagrange also said that he helped hide Wade at his house for two days before police found him hiding in a closet. There was also testimony from numerous Hutchinson Police officers and detectives about evidence and interviews they conducted.

Arraignment for Wade is set for Tuesday Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. before Judge Keith Schroeder.&nbsp;

Man bound over for trial in murder case

Welch promoted at HRHS

Hutchinson Regional Medical Center’s Heart and Vascular Unit for the first time used the Impella 5.5 heart pump, the world’s smallest, to successfully treat a patient.

"When you have a heart, normally it's a V-8 engine, it's really pumping blood well and doing amazing things, then you have a heart attack, or through the process of heart disease, that normally functioning heart is reduced down to a four-cylinder engine," said Chuck Welch with Hutchinson Regional. "The Impella device would be similar to the turbo, through efficiencies and improving blood flow, the Impella can actually improve the performance of that heart."

The tiny Impella 5.5 heart pump is placed inside a catheter with an electric motor that delivers 5.5 liters of blood flow per minute to the body. This process allows the heart to rest and recover.

"Because that heart is weakened and possibly sick, it takes off the workload," Welch said. "It's able to improve functionality while letting the heart rest in between."

Many patients can undergo major heart procedures without the support of a heart pump; however, patients with critical blockage or a weak heart muscle may require additional support provided by the Impella 5.5. 

Dr. Robert Fleming of Hutchinson performed the procedure earlier this month.

"The Impella device would be similar to the turbo, through efficiencies and improving blood flow, the Impella can actually improve the performance of that heart."The tiny Impella 5.5 heart pump is placed inside a catheter with an electric motor that delivers 5.5 liters of blood flow per minute to the body. This process allows the heart to rest and recover."Because that heart is weakened and possibly sick, it takes off the workload," Welch said. "It's able to improve functionality while letting the heart rest in between."Many patients can undergo major heart procedures without the support of a heart pump; however, patients with critical blockage or a weak heart muscle may require additional support provided by the Impella 5.5. "The sheriff's department will be planting trees out there to cut down on the noise. They're going to be scattered about the perimeter of the property. The facility will have lights for security purposes, but also for training purposes. They are looking at doing some nighttime training. The area will also be fenced in to provide for added security measures."

There will be three types of 26-foot berms built along with eyebrows above them to provide additional height to stop any errant shots.

"The majority of the shooting will occur to the west," Vonachen said. "The high-powered rifles, or sniper rifles, if you will, will be shooting to the east. Mohawk Road, for that portion, has been vacated, so there will not be any kind of traveling public going between the shooting range and, say, the landfill. This is really at the cul-de-sac at the dead end where we vacated Mohawk Road."

Commissioners asked about the concerns from the closest landowners about errant long-range shots and found that the planning commission didn't believe there was enough risk to endanger anything, so they went along with that recommendation and approved the application 2-0, with Chairman Ron Hirst abstaining because he owns land in the immediate area.

Sheriff's Office shooting range zoning case approved Tuesday

Kan. — Leaders from across the community are coming together to address the child care crisis in Reno County.

"We saw in 2020, a lot of providers close down," said Denice Gilliland-Burbank, community impact coordinator at United Way of Reno County. "We recently had a center close. We are very short on child care. We have come together as a group to try to solve this problem in our community with community resources that we already have."

This is clearly an economic development issue.

Our businesses have workforce that are experiencing problems finding child care," said Debra Teufel, president of the Hutch Chamber. "That creates an even greater workforce issue in the community than we already have. We talk to employers every day who have employees with absentee problems. You can't blame a family when they have a child that's in need of care and their child care center has either immediately closed, we had that happen in August, to one of our local centers, or just other, you know, other issues finding childcare, whether it's a home daycare that all of the sudden has one person that has COVID and then, they are in crisis, needing to find an alternative. There's a lot of angles of the reason this is an issue."

Because of the requirements from the state level for child care centers, getting one up and running is not an inexpensive proposition.

"It's our workforce today, but our kids are our workforce tomorrow," said Aubrey Abbott Patterson, president and CEO of Hutchinson Community Foundation. "That's our message when we're speaking to the community or to donors asking for their support, is that child care is critical to the success of our people and our community and our economy. We can rally people around a cause and help bring light to it and ask for support moving forward. This is not something that we're going to fix with small dollar amounts. It's something that is a system that's been broken for a while. We're now seeing the effects highlighted even more because of COVID."

There are plans going on behind the scenes to increase child care supply, but in order to do that, there needs to be a donation base. For the immediate need, the best place to donate is the United Way's K-Ready program. Call the United Way at 620-669-9359 for donation details.

Large dollar donations needed to address child care crisis

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After several rounds of negotiations, Hutchinson Community College and its faculty have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract.

According to HutchCC President Dr. Carter File, the faculty approved the new contract last week and it will now go before the Board of Trustees for action during a regular meeting on Thursday. If the board gives approval, it will end a long round of negotiations that included both sides declaring an impasse Aug. 2. A mediator was brought in at that time to try to get both sides closer to an agreement.

The contract calls for a 3.5%, or $1,250 pay increase, whichever is greater, along with $20 added to what the college pays for benefits. The board will also be asked to approve a similar 3.5% or $1,250 pay increase for classified and administrative staff for the year.

File says the total pay and benefits amount to about $660,000 to the budget.

Thursday's meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Shears Technology Center on the HutchCC Campus.

HutchCC to take action on new contract Thursday

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler USD 313 School Board approved a policy to administer Narcan when necessary. The agreement was approved during Monday's regular agenda session.

Under the guidelines, the district will have Narcan (naloxone HCL) nasal spray available for administration to students, employees, or individuals in emergency situations for the treatment of an opioid-related overdose on school property or at a school-sponsored event. The program is similar to the one adopted by Hutchinson USD 308, although it will limit those who can administer the drug to nurses and eventually athletic trainers.

Also Monday, the board approved starting up an esports program. The program will be limited to the high school and offer a fall and spring season for students interested in being a participant.

The startup cost of the program is around $3,100 with a budget of between $4,000 and $6,000, which would include a coach. The district hopes to get a new student population involved in an extracurricular activity.&nbsp;

USD 313 approves esports program

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It was HMS-8’s turn to host Hutchinson USD 308 School Board members as part of Monday's meeting.

The board approved what it hopes will be another tool in efforts to curb the pandemic in schools as members approved a grant application for a Test-To-Stay program.&nbsp;

“If we were awarded the grant, we would go back and visit the board about changing our policy,” Superintendent Mike Folks said. “That’s what I was trying to do is to put another tool in the tool bag to help keep kids and staff in school.”&nbsp;

Folks says, if they get the grant funding, it wont change current COVID policies in the school, just add to what is available to the district.

“Listening to some of the larger school districts that have been awarded the grant, there’s quite a few resources that are available that can be utilized to help our nurses,” Folks said.&nbsp;

Under the current policy, if a student is exposed at school, parents will have some say in whether their child goes to class or not. What that means is if a parent wants to send their child to school, making sure they are symptom free and wearing a mask, the student can attend class. If the exposure happens outside the school, such as at home, then parents must work with the health department and quarantine the student. That policy would remain. The new grant could be used to test students who fall outside of the current policy.

“If we get this grant, we’re not changing our current policy,” Folks said. “If we have students that fall outside of that exposure that we could possibly test (Test-To-Stay) or test-to-know would probably be a better way to explain it.”

Folks says the current policy has been working in the district and they hope it continues to keep more students in the classroom.

“I would say that 95% (of parents) have been sending their kids to school after they have been exposed at school, and our numbers continue to decline,” Folks said. “It’s been a lot easier on our nursing staff and a lot better for kids and our staff. So we plan on staying the course with our masking for right now. I thought we should apply and just see if there was one more thing we could do to help kids and help staff.”

Before the meeting, the board toured the facilities.

Two eighth graders, Kieryn Bain and Bennett Gardner, greeted board members and district leadership before the tour began. The students were nominated by their teachers to be greeters on academic standing and involvement within their school.

Individuals who have not yet shared their ideas for how Hutchinson and Reno County should prioritize American Rescue Plan Act dollars will have two final chances to do so next week.

So that as many people as possible can voice their ideas on how to spend the $17 plus million earmarked for Reno County before elected leaders make their final spending decisions, the public is invited to the final ARPA Resident Engagement Meetings at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 20 and 10 a.m. Oct. 21 at the Cosmosphere, 1100 N. Plum St. These will be 90-minute discussions led by facilitators during which individuals may offer their input.

Forty-two public listening sessions have been scheduled throughout Reno County over the past month and a half, gaining input from a wide variety of individuals. 

Kansas State University will synthesize the data from the meetings into a report that will be presented to the public and elected leaders later this fall.

HARVEY COUNTY —A Kansas kidnapping suspect who ran from a court appearance last week is back in custody, according to the Harvey County Sheriff's Office.

On Thursday, 47-year-old Joshua Harris of Wichita&nbsp;appeared in court at the Harvey County Courthouse for a preliminary hearing on a felony drug charge. Separately, Harris was wanted on a Harvey County warrant for aggravated kidnapping. A Harvey County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted to detain Harris on the warrant. Harris evaded the deputy and ran from the courthouse.&nbsp;Harris was able to get into his vehicle and flee the area.&nbsp; Traffic near the courthouse prevented deputies from reaching Harris' vehicle before he drove away.

Just after 4:15 p.m. Monday, local law enforcement were notified Harris had been seen at a convenience store in the 3500 block of S. Duncan Street in Newton. As law enforcement arrived at the location, Harris fled in his vehicle.

Harris was pursued by law enforcement as he drove south into Sedgwick County. He later exited his vehicle and continued to run away from law enforcement.

Law enforcement utilized a drone and a K-9 unit to help locate him. Harris was found by drone footage attempting to hide in the yard of a residence in the 8100 block of N. Hillside Street in Valley Center. Just after 5 p.m. Monday, Harris turned himself over to law enforcement when the K-9 unit began to be deployed.

Harris is being held without bond in the Harvey County Detention Center on requested charges of aggravated kidnapping, failure to appear, possession of opiates, use and possession of drug paraphernalia, and fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement.

The Reno County Board of County Commissioners agreed to cut its pay&nbsp; from $18,000 to $10,800 per year if the membership expands from three to five members. This was suggested by Commissioner Ron Sellers, because he believes more commissioners will mean less work for them as individuals. 

"The time of the county commission to perform its role has been reduced," Sellers said. "I think our job has changed. The other commissioners might not share the view that our job has changed. It's the job of the county administrator now to administrate and manage the county. It's our job, as I see it, to be more like a board of directors, advising the county administrator on his role and the priorities."

Chairman Ron Hirst did not agree that the workload would become low enough to justify a pay decrease.

"We agree on lots of things," Hirst said. "I don't happen to agree with this particular item, because of the time involved. I still have lots of time involved and I think you do too, and I think Commissioner Friesen does. In order to advise and learn what the citizens are wanting, interested in and so forth, means we have to get out and visit and communicate with those folks."

Commissioner Daniel Friesen thought both of the other commissioners brought up good points, but he brought it back to who he believes all three of them ultimately answer to.

"Our boss, the public, generally doesn't like us getting paid much," Friesen said. "I don't know if its just that it's hard to conceptualize all of the work involved, or whether they just feel like the value isn't there. In that respect, I think that's the argument that's going to win the day for me, is that, if the public feels like we're being overly compensated already, and we're suggesting that we increase to five commissioners over three, I think it's reasonable, all things considered, to adopt this resolution."

The commissioners pay will stay the same if the number of commissioners stays the same. This resolution is contingent upon the board's expansion. The resolution was approved 2-1.

In order to advise and learn what the citizens are wanting, interested in and so forth, means we have to get out and visit and communicate with those folks."Commissioner Daniel Friesen thought both of the other commissioners brought up good points, but he brought it back to who he believes all three of them ultimately answer to."Our boss, the public, generally doesn't like us getting paid much," Friesen said. "I don't know if its just that it's hard to conceptualize all of the work involved, or whether they just feel like the value isn't there. In that respect, I think that's the argument that's going to win the day for me, is that, if the public feels like we're being overly compensated already, and we're suggesting that we increase to five commissioners over three, I think it's reasonable, all things considered, to adopt this resolution."The commissioners pay will stay the same if the number of commissioners stays the same. This resolution is contingent upon the board's expansion. The resolution was approved 2-1.

New traffic camera to be tested at Hutchinson intersection

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Preliminary hearings are set for Wednesday for two Hutchinson men arrested in connection with the April 11 shooting that left one man dead and another injured.

Sixty-four-year-old Sandral Wade is charged with one count of first- degree murder in the shooting death of Orlando Gipson. He’s also charged with attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of Landre Bowie, and charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. The co-defendant in the case, 71-year-old Robert Lagrange faces a single count of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.&nbsp;

The two were arrested in connection with the early morning shooting in the 1500 block of West 12th Avenue. Officers arrived at the scene and found Bowie laying in the street with gunshot wounds to his abdomen. He was transferred to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment and survived. Officers then located Gipson in the front yard of a nearby residence with a single gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Hearings set for two men in murder case

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has issued an Enhanced Risk of Severe Weather for about the western half of Kansas Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Severe storms will be possible this evening and overnight for areas generally along and especially west of Interstate 135. Golf ball size hail and damaging winds to 70 mph will be the main threats.

According to KSStorm.Info forecaster Scott Roberts, the strength of this low pressure system is once-in-a-decade for this time of year, and the last time we had a significant fall outbreak was in 2015. 

This morning, models have pushed the expected dry line formation about 50 miles west, now along a line from Colby to Liberal rather than from Hays to Dodge City.

What this means for Hutchinson is a later arrival and somewhat better chances for a strong line of storms with embedded bowing segments.&nbsp;

The main risk for the Hutch area will be damaging straight line wind.&nbsp;

Enhanced Risk of nighttime severe weather Tuesday into Wednesday

All seven actively running Hutchinson city council candidates were at the forum hosted by the Chamber and the Young Professionals group Monday in Hutchinson. The seven candidates are Greg Fast and Brock Wells in the SW District, Jill Gumble and Jon Richardson in the NW District and incumbent Sara Bagwell and challengers Marla Jean Booher and Charles Johnston for the at-large seat.

The candidates were asked about where they would make cuts if they had to either cut services or raise taxes. None of them would be specific about cuts, but none wanted to raise taxes, either.

They were also asked about where to spend the federal COVID relief funds allocated to the city, it appeared that broadband and infrastructure specifically aimed at reducing the need for the stormwater utility fees were common themes.

The city's childcare issues were also asked about and multiple candidates talked about the need to bring the city's influence to bear on the state legislature in an effort to reduce regulation and make it easier for childcare providers to get started and stay open.

Multiple candidates praised the city's critical response team as a great first step toward addressing mental health issues in the city, but some candidates also see having a strong economy as being part of the key to helping people have something to value so they can build a life once their addiction is addressed.

When asked to address housing, the candidates focused on the fact that code enforcement in previous years has not been applied equitably and that needs to be fixed first so that those who own rental property in the community can improve those properties and make them livable without having undue threat from city staff, especially when the problems are not safety-related, but rather cosmetic.

The prospective council members all supported the work of full-time Human Relations Officer Dave Sotelo, as a safe place for those who may believe that the city has treated them unfairly because of their membership in a protected class to come to and get their issues addressed.

Business development ideas ran the gamut, but a common theme was reducing the hurdles to get businesses to come to town and encouraging home grown businesses to grow, while also providing the quality of life, specifically with regard to housing, that could draw both further hard industrial development and also potentially bring other types of jobs to the city.

There was not consensus on whether or not to continue to develop downtown specifically, more because some candidates believe that the gateway to the city also needs investment, but also because the industrial areas of the city need to be attractive to potential companies that could come and bring jobs, which ultimately would make investing throughout the city more attractive.

It appeared that there isn't a whole lot of support for the parks and rec master plan that was passed in 2019, mainly because the city has so many other needs that must be addressed with limited funds.

Multiple candidates want to know why businesses aren't coming to Hutchinson and they want to reshape the city's comprehensive plan, where necessary to bring more jobs to town and to be practical about what the city can execute, rather than writing down dreams that the city can't fund.

Candidate forum Monday focuses on economy, size of government

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department reported Monday that there were three methamphetamine overdoses reported in the past day.&nbsp;

There has also been an increase in heroin overdoses over the last two and a half weeks. This concerning trend likely involves illicitly manufactured fentanyl. Fentanyl is mixed in with other substances including methamphetamine, heroin, and fake pills made to look like Oxycontin. Two milligrams of fentanyl can be lethal depending on a person’s body size, tolerance and past usage.

The Reno County Health Department has been collecting data of suspected overdoses and issuing alerts for the past year. Since Oct. 1, 2021, there have been 14 overdoses and two Naloxone administrations.

The Reno Recovery Collaborative recommends the following steps and strategies for our community:

Reno Co. reports 3 overdose cases in past 24 hours

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Five Hutchinson Community College nursing students were each granted $1,500 scholarships from the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. This year’s scholarship recipients are Perla Chavez Carrillo, Karen Ibarra, Daniel Simental and Laci Sutton, all from Hutchinson, and Joel Hernandez from McPherson. Hernandez, Ibarra, Simental, and Sutton are pursuing degrees to become nurses (ADN) and Carrillo is enrolled in the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program.

The LPN curriculum is a nine-month program and those completing the course receive a certificate of completion upon graduation. The ADN program is a two-year program and the students completing the course will receive an Associate of Applied Science-Nursing upon completion.

The Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Auxiliary Scholarship was established in 2018 and, to date, 20 area students have benefited from the program. Eligible students must be full-time at Hutchinson Community College and pursuing degrees in nursing with a minimum GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 system). Preference is given to Reno County applicants and financial need is considered as part of the selection process. Scholarships may be renewed for a second year, provided criteria is met during the first year of coursework.

Cindy Broxterman, president of the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, said the scholarship program is one of the organization’s most important beneficiaries. “Our hope is that the scholarship recipients will remain in the city to work at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center after completing their coursework,” Broxterman said. “The auxiliary is honored to give five deserving nursing students a boost each year to take the next step for a career in healthcare.”

Ken Johnson, president and CEO of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, said the healthcare system could not function as well as it does without the assistance of the auxiliary. “Part of our mission is to prepare for the future and assist young people who are interested in careers in healthcare,” Johnson said. “The auxiliary’s scholarship program is having a major impact in accomplishing that objective.”

In a letter to the auxiliary, Cindy Keast with the Hutchinson College Endowment Association said, “The scholarship program truly impacts a student’s ability to transform their lives and become successful.”

HutchCC nursing students benefit from scholarship

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The effort to get federal matching funds to help with the problems on the Woodie Seat Freeway likely won't have a resolution until next month.

Hutchinson City Engineer Jeff Peterson told Hutch Post Monday that by statute, the federal grant program that the city has applied for to construct roundabouts in place of bridges at the end of the Woodie Seat Freeway and to get rid of the bridge at Avenue B and close the road will have its award by November 22, but that they typically tell the awardees about a week ahead of that deadline.

Brock Wells, city council candidate for the SW district in the November 2 election, spoke against the closure of B Street when the city chose to apply for the grant back in April. 

Retiring City Councilman Jon Daveline made clear at the time of application that the reason for going with roundabouts instead of bridges was in an effort to save local taxpayers money, because if the city had to go it alone, the bridge replacements would likely cost at least $7 million, but the city's portion of the federal matching funds on the proposed roundabout project would be about $160,000 a year for 20 years, or about $3.2 million.
